Mints are the most popular economic and traditional herbs. The aim of this article was chemical characterization of volatile compounds from wild populations of Mentha aquatica, M. arvensis, M. longifolia, M. microphylla, M. pulegium, M. spicata, Mdumetorum, Mgentillis and Mverticillata, as well as cultivated samples of M. spicata, Mpiperita ‘Alba’ and Mpiperita ‘Crispa’. Analyses were performed directly from dried aerial parts (herb) of collected samples by headspace gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry. In total 54 compounds were detected, representing from 89.99 % to 99.66 % of volatile fractions of all investigated samples. The recorded volatiles were primarily monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes, while oxygenated aromatic monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and aliphatic compounds were present in lower concentrations in analyzed samples. The major components were linalool, limonene, 1,8‐cineol, α‐terpinyl acetate, pulegone, β‐pinene and menthol. The cluster analysis revealed five main groups or chemotypes according to qualitative and quantitative content of volatiles, as well as similarities among samples. These results contribute to the knowledge on the mints chemistry in Pannonian Plain and Balkan Peninsula.  相似文献

This paper reports studies on the growth and biosynthesis of monoterpenes by transformed shoot cultures of Mentha citrata and Mentha piperita, originally developed 5 years ago and since maintained by regular subculturing. Throughout this time, the M. citrata culture has stably maintained production of an oil closely resembling that of the parent plant in which linalool and linalyl acetate are the predominant components. However, M. piperita, which initially showed a divergence from the parent plant in producing significant amounts of menthofuran in addition to the characteristic oil components menthol and menthone, has now been found to produce pulegone and menthofuran as the major components. The cultures were subjected to different environmental conditions of varying periods of light and temperature in an attempt to restore menthol and menthone production. Increased illumination reduced the yields of pulegone and menthofuran but did not stimulate the production of either menthol or menthone, which remained only at trace levels (below 0.2 g/g fresh weight). Cultures of M. citrata were, however, stimulated by increased illumination, and produced more linalool and linalyl acetate. Shoot cultures of M. citrata and M. piperita were grown in 14–1 fermenters for up to 60 dys during which the biomass increased from approximately 100 g to 2.5 kg and 3.5 kg respectively. Both cultures rapidly consumed sucrose with a concomitant release of glucose, and the uptake of inorganic ions was similar except that M. citrata consumed far less Na+ during the fermentation. The total yields of monoterpenes from the fermentations were 1.16 g (M. piperita) and 0.18 g (M. citrata). *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** AG903062 00005  相似文献

The shoot growth and fresh weight of Mentha piperita grown in soil were stimulated at concentrations of 1.26 × 10?5M to 7.77 × 10?4M phosfon (2,4-dichlorobenzyl tributyl phosphonium chloride) while higher concentrations resulted in retardation of growth. Concentrations of 6.30 × 10?7M to 3.78 × 10?5M caused retardation of growth in mineral nutrient solution, and even death at the highest concentrations. However, when the M. piperita plants were grown in mineral nutrient solutions at concentrations of phosfon which had been sequentially lowered from 2.52 × 10?8M to 2.52 × 10?12M, the shoot growth and fresh weight were stimulated as in the case of plants grown in phosfon treated soil.  相似文献

Six highly oxygenated flavones have been isolated from the leaves of Mentha piperita. Five known compounds, 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,4′-tetramethoxyflavone, 5,4′-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, 5,3′-dihydroxy-6,7,8,4′-tetramethoxyflavone, 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,3′,4′-pentamethoxyflavone and 5,3′,4′-trihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, are reported for the first time in the genus Mentha. The sixth compound has been identified as 5,6-dihydroxy-7,8,3′,4′-tetramethoxyflavone by UV, NMR and mass spectra.  相似文献

Saline stress is responsible for significant reductions in the growth of plants, and it globally leads to limitations in the performance of crops, especially in drought-affected areas. However, a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the resistance of plants to environmental stress can lead to a better plant breeding and selection of cultivars. Mint is one of the most important medicinal plants, and it has important properties for industry, and for the medicinal and pharmacy fields. The effects of salinity on the biochemical and enzymatic properties of 18 ecotypes of mint from six different species, that is, Mentha piperita, Mentha mozafariani, Mentha rotundifolia, Mentha spicata, Mentha pulegium and Mentha longifolia, have been examined in this study. The experimental results showed that salinity increased with increasing in stress integrity influenced the enzymatic properties, proline content, electrolyte leakage, and the hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and essential oil contents. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis were conducted, and they grouped the studied species on the basis of their biochemical characteristics. According to the obtained biplot results, M. piperita and M. rotundifolia showed better stress tolerance than the other varieties, and M. longifolia was identified as being salt sensitive. Generally, the results showed that H2O2 and malondialdehyde had a positive connection with each other and showed a reverse relationship with all the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. Finally, it was found that the M. spicata, M. rotundifolia and M. piperita ecotypes could be used for future breeding projects to improve the salinity tolerance of other ecotypes.  相似文献

Experiment was carried out to determine the effect of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on the disease development, growth, oil yield and biochemical changes in the plants of Mentha arvensis. With the increase in initial inoculum levels of S. sclerotiorum a corresponding decrease in plant fresh and dry weights were recorded. The maximum reduction in the shoot-roots/suckers fresh weight and shoot-roots/suckers dry weights (39.8%, 43.6%, 40.3% and 42.9%), respectively, was observed at the highest initial inoculum level of 12 g fungal mycelium/5 kg soil as compared to uninoculated control. The infection of roots and suckers due to S. sclerotiorum increased with increasing initial inoculum levels. At the lowest initial inoculum (1.0 g mycelium/5 kg soil), infection was observed 18.0% and at the highest (12 g mycelium/5 kg soil), it was 80.2%. Significant (P ⩽ 0.01) reduction in oil yield, total chlorophyll, total phenol and total sugar content of M. arvensis plants was observed at the lowest inoculum level as compared to uninoculated control.  相似文献

Salinity and waterlogging are two stresses which in nature often occur simultaneously. In this work, effects of combined waterlogging and salinity stresses are studied on the anatomical alteration, changes of enzymatic antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation in Mentha aquatica L. plants. Seedlings were cultured in half-strength Hoagland medium 50 days after sowing, and were treated under combination of three waterlogging levels (well drained, moderately drained and waterlogging) and NaCl (0, 50, 100, 150 mM) for 30 days. Moderately drained and waterlogging conditions induced differently aerenchyma formation in roots of M. aquatica salt-treated and untreated plants. Moreover, stele diameter and endodermis layer were also affected by salt stress and waterlogging. Salt stress significantly decreased growth, relative water content (RWC), protein level, catalase (CAT) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities, and increased proline content, MDA content, H2O2 level and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Waterlogging in salt-untreated plants increased significantly growth parameters, RWC, protein content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and decreased proline content, H2O2 and MDA levels. In salt-treated plant, waterlogging caused strong induction of antioxidant enzymes activities especially at severe stress condition. These results suggest M. aquatica is a waterlogging tolerant plant due to significant increase of antioxidant activity, membrane stability and growth under water stress. High antioxidant capacity under waterlogging can be a protective strategy against oxidative damage, and help to salt stress alleviation.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the essential oils from Mentha piperita L., Mentha crispa L., Origanum vulgare L., Dracocephalum moldavica L., and Hyssopus officinalis L. cultivated under the conditions of the Western Siberia Region was studied using the chromatography-mass spectrometry approach. The results on the composition of the cultivated O. vulgare, D. moldavica, and H. officinalis are comparable with the data for wild plants, and for M. piperita and M. crispa, with the plants grown in the Southern regions of Russia. The data on the chemical composition of the essence oil, or attar, from M. crispa (Inna breed) were obtained for the first time, and the data for H. officinalis were substantially extended.  相似文献

The improvement of the growth and quality of medicinal plants under stress is of significance, worldwide. The hypothesis was to alleviate salinity stress in Mentha piperita by enhancing nutrient uptake using magnetically treated water, which to our knowledge has not been previously investigated. The objective was to test the effects of magnetized water (using alternating magnetic fields) (main plots, M1-M4 representing control, 100, 200, and 300 mT, respectively), salinity (subplots, S1-S4 representing control, 40, 80, and 120 mM NaCl, respectively), and growth medium (sub-subplots, X1-X4 representing coco peat, palm, coco peat + perlite, and palm + perlite, respectively) on M. piperita nutrient uptake in the greenhouse. The M treatments, especially the 100 and 200 mT levels, significantly increased plant N (1.08%, S3M4X1), P (0.89%, S3M3X1), K (3.23%, S3M3X1), Ca (53.6 mg/kg, S4M4X4), and Mg (39.63 mg/kg, S3M3X2) concentrations (compared with control at 0.71, 0.49, 2.4, 26.63, 1.63) even at the highest level of salinity. Magnetically treated water also significantly enhanced plant Fe and Zn concentration to a maximum of 750 μg/kg (M4S3X1) and 94.67 μg/kg (S4M4X3), under salinity stress, respectively. The single and the combined use of organic and mineral media significantly affected plant nutrient uptake, especially when used with the proper rate of M treatment. If combined with the proper growth medium, the magnetized water may be more effective on the alleviation of salt stress in Mentha piperita by enhancing nutrient uptake.

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of inoculation on three salt-tolerant, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) STR2 (Bacillus pumilus), STR8 (Halomonas desiderata) and STR36 (Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans), for their growth-promoting potential and efficacy in augmenting salt tolerance in Mentha arvensis, an essential oil-bearing crop and natural source of l-menthol, under varying levels of NaCl stress (0, 100, 300 and 500 mM) imposed through irrigating water. Increase in the levels of salt concentration led to a decrease in the growth, fresh weight, leaf–stem ratio, oil content and yield. However, the negative effects of salinity were observed to be convalesced in the PGPR inoculated plants. At salinity levels of 100 and 300 mM NaCl, H. desiderata inoculated plants recorded the highest herb yield, whereas at 500 mM NaCl, the plants inoculated with E. oxidotolerans yielded maximum herb. The oil content in non-inoculated, salt-stressed plants was observed to be 0.46, 0.42 and 0.35 % at 100, 300 and 500 mM NaCl, respectively, whereas the plants inoculated with H. desiderata recorded the oil content of 0.71 and 0.60 and 0.48 % at similar levels of NaCl stress, respectively. The halotolerant PGPR minimized the deleterious effects of salt toxicity producing at par or higher yields at lower and medium salinity levels (100, 300 mM NaCl) than the un-inoculated non-salt-stressed plants through improved foliar nutrient uptake and enhanced antioxidant machinery. Based on the results of the experiments reported herein, the use of salt-tolerant, plant-growth-promoting bacteria may provide an effective means of facilitating M. arvensis growth in salt-stressed environments.  相似文献

The essential oils were obtained from Myosotis arvensis L. and M. palustris L. by hydrodistillation and subsequently analyzed by GC–MS. Fifteen components in M. arvensis and twenty-one in M. palustris representing, respectively, 89.63 and 93.19 % of the total oils were identified on the basis of their retention time, mass spectra characteristics and semi-quantitative data were obtained from relative peak area percentages. The 3-methyl-benzaldehyde was found to be the major constituent of both tested oils (42.76 % in M. arvensis and 45.80 % in M. palustris). Additionally, methyl salicylate was a characteristic compound for M. arvensis and α-bisabolol oxide B for M. palustris.  相似文献

Essential oils are one of the known plant materials for insect pest control. The studies about essential oils application for control of insect pest population has been started in recent years. This study aims to investigate repellency effect and fumigant toxicity of Mentha piperita and Cuminum cyminum essential oil on Tribolium castaneum and Sitophilus oryzae. The results showed that the mortality rate of adult insects was increased with increase in essential oil concentration. The highest pest mortality rate in the case of M. piperita and C. cyminum on T. castaneum and S. oryzae was 64, 68, 82 and 78%, respectively. The average insect mortality was significantly different in various concentrations in most of the treatments. Amounts of LC50 were 0.421, 0.271, 0.135 and 0.136 (ml/ml) for M. piperita and C. cyminum essential oil on T. castaneum and S. oryzae, respectively. Different concentrations of M. piperita and C. cyminum essential oil had different repellency effect on T. castaneum and S. oryzae. Repellency effect was increased with increase in essential oil concentration, and the highest repellency effect was belonged to the highest concentration. Essential oils of M. piperita and C. cyminum caused 61.2 and 66.4% repellency on T. castaneum. Meanwhile, their effect was found to be 55.2 and 60.4% repellency on S. oryzae at the highest concentration.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the antioxidant effect of aromatic volatiles of three common aromatic plants, Lavandula dentata, Mentha spicata, and M. piperita. In this study, kunming mice subjected to low oxygen condition were treated with the volatiles emitted from these aromatic plants through inhalation administration. Then the blood cell counts, and the activities and gene expressions of antioxidant enzymes in different tissues were tested. The results showed that low oxygen increased the counts of red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets of mice, and aromatic volatiles decreased their counts. Exposure to aromatic volatiles resulted in decreases in the malonaldehyde contents, and increases in the activities and gene expressions of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase in different tissues under low oxygen. In addition, as the main component of aromatic volatiles, eucalyptol was the potential source that imparted positive antioxidant effect.  相似文献

Plant cell culture provides an alternative means for producing secondary metabolites. In this study, experiments were carried out to study the impact of several parameters, independently and in combination, on the stimulation of menthol production in the cell suspension culture of Mentha piperita. Callus was obtained from leaf segments of in vitro grown plantlets on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.2 mg l−1of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid to initiate cell suspension culture. This culture was maintained in half-strength MS medium supplemented with 0.2 mg l−1of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid at 15 d interval and used for further studies. Precursor feeding alone, i.e., menthone, at 35 μM concentration showed slightly improved productivity. γ-Cyclodextrin alone at 60 μM concentration and in combination with menthone feeding at 35 μM increased menthol yield up to 92 and 110 mg l−1 in comparison to 77 mg l−1 of control culture. Synergistic potentiation effect of menthone feeding at 35 μM and γ-cyclodextrin at 60 μM treatment followed by in situ adsorption with RP-8 also showed potential stimulation of menthol production in M. piperita cell culture. Fungal elicitor treatment showed enhanced production level up to 140.8 mg l−1 in comparison to that of control. Further studies were carried out with the establishment of Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Ach5) gall-mediated calli, and consequently, cell suspension culture and results showed the significant enhancement of menthol yield up to 278 mg l−1. The use of herbs in pharmaceutical preparation is ever increasing, and the demand for pesticides free material by the concern industries is on the rise. Consequently the need to grow disease-free plants using non-chemical fertilizers and pesticides is the need of the hour. Mentha arvensis cv. kosi is highly infested with Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, and severe oil yield loss occurs due to this nematode pest. Employing ecofriendly ways of nematode management, the mutualistic endophytes (Trichoderma harzianum strain Thu, Glomus intraradices) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (Bacillus megaterium and Pseudomonas fluorescens) were assessed individually and in combination on plant biomass, oil yield of menthol mint (M. arvensis cv. kosi), reproduction potential and population development of root knot nematode, M. incognita under glasshouse conditions. These microbes enhanced the plant biomass and percent oil yield both with and without M. incognita inoculation. Dual application of mutualistic fungal endophytes and Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPRs) may be a wise option for enhancing the oil yield and tolerance of menthol mint against M. incognita infection.  相似文献

Sap-feeding homopterans, which reduce the fitness of their host plants, are often tended by ants that feed on their honeydew. The composition of the honeydew varies with both the aphid and the host plant. Extra-floral nectaries (EFNs) are believed to have evolved to attract attending ants, protecting the hosts, but it is unknown if EFNs on different plants have the same impact on the relations between an aphid species feeding on those plants and its tending ant. Experimental research was conducted to examine the attraction of Tapinoma erraticum scout ants to honeydew from the aphid Aphis gossypii feeding on two different plants, Prunus amygdalus and Mentha piperita, negligence of tending the aphids, and survival of the aphids in the presence of artificial EFNs. The scout ants were significantly more attracted to artificial nectar dispensed on P. amygdalus leaves than on M. piperita, or aphids on both plants and water. They neglected aphids in the presence of artificial EFNs on M. piperita but not on P. amygdalus. The aphid population on M. piperita did not statistically change in the presence of artificial EFNs during the 8 days of the third experiment. On P. amygdalus, the aphids succeeded in developing fully to winged form. In conclusion, the responses of the ants tending aphids to the presence of artificial EFNs were influenced by the host plant.  相似文献
