Distribution patterns and numerical variability of the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) and its predator Neoseiulus aff. paspalivorus DeLeon (Phytoseiidae) on the nuts of 3- to 7-month-old bunches of coconut palms were studied at two sites in Sri Lanka. At the two sites, coconut mites were present on 88 and 75% of the nuts but no more than three-quarters of those nuts showed damage symptoms. N. aff. paspalivorus was found more on mature nuts than on immature nuts. Spatial and temporal distribution of coconut mites and predatory mites differed significantly. The mean number of coconut mites per nut increased until 5-month-old bunches and declined thereafter. The densities of predatory mites followed a similar trend but peaked 1 month later. Variability in the numbers of mites among palms and bunches of the same age was great, but was relatively low on 6-month-old bunches. The results indicate that assessment of infestation levels by damage symptoms alone is not reliable. Sampling of coconut and/or predatory mite numbers could be improved by using several nuts of 6-month-old bunches. The effect of predatory mites on coconut mites over time suggests that N. aff. paspalivorus could be a prospective biological control agent of A. guerreronis. 相似文献

Neoseiulus neobaraki and N. paspalivorus are amongst the most common phytoseiid predators of coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis, found in the spatial niche beneath coconut fruit bracts. Both predators may occur on the same coconut palms in Benin and Tanzania and are therefore likely to interact with each other. Here, we assessed cannibalism and intraguild predation (IGP) of the two predators in the absence and presence of their primary prey A. guerreronis. In the absence of the shared extraguild prey, A. guerreronis, N. neobaraki killed 19 larvae of N. paspalivorus per day and produced 0.36?eggs/female/day, while the latter species killed only 7 larvae of the former and produced 0.35?eggs/female/day. Presence of A. guerreronis only slightly decreased IGP by N. neobaraki but strongly decreased IGP by N. paspalivorus, which consumed 4-7 times less IG prey than N. neobaraki. Resulting predator offspring to IG prey ratios were, however, 4-5 times higher in N. paspalivorus than N. neobaraki. Overall, provision of A. guerreronis increased oviposition in both species. In the cannibalism tests, in the absence of A. guerreronis, N. neobaraki and N. paspalivorus consumed 1.8 and 1.2 conspecific larvae and produced almost no eggs. In the presence of abundant herbivorous prey, cannibalism dramatically decreased but oviposition increased in both N. neobaraki and N. paspalivorus. In summary, we conclude that (1) N. neobaraki is a much stronger intraguild predator than N. paspalivorus, (2) cannibalism is very limited in both species, and (3) both IGP and cannibalism are reduced in the presence of the common herbivorous prey with the exception of IGP by N. neobaraki, which remained at high levels despite presence of herbivorous prey. We discuss the implications of cannibalism and IGP on the population dynamics of A. guerreronis and the predators in view of their geographic and within-palm distribution patterns. 相似文献

The eriophyid mite Aceria guerreronis occurs in most coconut growing regions of the world and causes enormous damage to coconut fruits. The concealed environment of the fruit perianth under which the mite resides renders its control extremely difficult. Recent studies suggest that biological control could mitigate the problems caused by this pest. Neoseiulus paspalivorus and Proctolaelaps bickleyi are two of the most frequently found predatory mites associated with A. guerreronis on coconut fruits. Regarding biological control, the former has an advantage in invading the tight areas under the coconut fruit perianth while the latter is more voracious on the pest mites and has a higher reproductive capacity. Based on the idea of the combined use/release of both predators on coconut fruits, we studied their compatibility in spatial niche use and intraguild predation (IGP). Spatial niche use on coconut fruits was examined on artificial arenas mimicking the area under the coconut fruit perianth and the open fruit surface. Both N. paspalivorus and P. bickleyi preferentially resided and oviposited inside the tight artificial chamber. Oviposition rate of P. bickleyi and residence time of N. paspalivorus inside the chamber were reduced in the presence of a conspecific female. Residence of N. paspalivorus inside the chamber was also influenced by the presence of P. bickleyi. Both N. paspalivorus and P. bickleyi preyed upon each other with relatively moderate IGP rates of adult females on larvae but neither species yielded nutritional benefits from IGP in terms of adult survival and oviposition. We discuss the relevance of our findings for a hypothetic combined use of both predators in biological control of A. guerreronis. 相似文献

Life history and prey consumption of the predatory stigmaeid mite Agistemus olivi Romeih, as affected by feeding on the motile stages of the olive bud mite Aceria oleae Nalepa and the olive rust mite Tegolophus hassani Keifer (Acari : Eriophyidae), has been studied for the first time at different temperatures and 70–75% r.h. A greater capability was shown for consuming the olive bud mite than the olive rust mite and the former prey relatively induced more fecundity. The rise of different temperatures from 20°C to 25°C and 30°C shortened development and increased reproduction and prey consumption. The maximum reproduction (6.92 and 6.08 eggs ♀ day) was recorded at the higher temperature, while the minimum reproduction (1.50 and 1.30 eggs ♀ day) was observed for A. oleae and T. hassani, respectively. 相似文献

A lectin, which agglutinated specifically the yeast cells of the Saccharomyces genus, was isolated from tulip bulbs (Tulipa gesneriana) using affinity chromatography on mannan-Sepharose 4B. Its relative molecular mass was determined by gel filtration to be approximately 67,000. On polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate, a relative molecular mass of 17,000 was obtained, suggesting that the lectin is a tetramer. Binding studies performed with iodinated lectin indicated that Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells contained approximately 5.7 X 10(6) binding sites per cell, whereas little binding was observed with yeasts other than the Saccharomyces genus, bacteria and animal erythrocytes. D-Mannose, D-mannose 6-phosphate, L-fucose and L-fucosylamine were potent inhibitors of the lectin binding to S. cerevisiae cells, while, D-glucose, D-galactose and D-mannosamine were inactive, indicating that hydroxyl group at C-2 of D-mannose was essential for the lectin binding. Furthermore, inhibition experiments, using various manno-oligosaccharides, suggested that the lectin recognized (1----6)-linked manno-oligosaccharide units larger than mannobiose. 相似文献

Neoseiulus baraki Athias-Henriot (Phytoseiidae) is one of the few predators associated with the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Eriophyidae), the most damaging pest of coconut fruits in the Americas, Africa and more recently in Oman, Sri Lanka and parts of India. As Brazil is presently considered the putative origin of A. guerreronis, a large effort is presently underway to develop a classical biological control strategy for this pest in Africa and Asia. In this study, we investigated the life history of a Brazilian (NbBr) and a Beninese (NbBe) population of N. baraki on prey and non-prey diets under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C 70–90% RH and 12:12 h L:D). Both populations were able to complete juvenile development and reproduce when feeding on A. guerreronis, Tetranychus urticae Koch eggs—a prey commonly used in the maintenance of phytoseiid mite colonies—and maize pollen. The two predators developed faster on A. guerreronis than on any other diet. The longest developmental time was recorded for NbBe on castor bean pollen (12.3 days), which also was not suitable at all for the development of NbBr. The longest developmental time of NbBr was 8.94 days on T. urticae eggs, whereas NbBe needed only 5.86 days to develop from eggs to adult stage on the same diet. For both populations, oviposition rate and longevity as well as demographic parameters were most favorable on A. guerreronis, the target prey. Intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) and net reproductive rate (Ro) were significantly higher for NbBr (0.19 and 24.9) than for NbBe (0.16 and 18.0). Taken together, the life history data from this study predict that NbBr is a more specialized and efficient predator of A. guerreronis compared with NbBe. The ability of the latter to utilize alternative food types, however, predicts that it would be able to persist longer in coconut habitat in the absence of its primary prey A. guerreronis. Implications for the implementation of a sustainable control strategy against A. guerreronis are discussed. 相似文献

After intracerebral inoculation, Theiler's virus induces in its natural host, the mouse, an acute encephalomyelitis followed, in susceptible animals, by chronic inflammation and primary demyelination. Susceptibility to demyelination among strains of laboratory mice is explained by the capacity of the immune system to control viral load during persistence. Also, differences of susceptibility to viral load between the susceptible SJL strain and the resistant B10.S strain are mainly due to two loci, Tmevp2 and Tmevp3, located close to the Ifng locus on chromosome 10. In this article, we show that the Tmevp3 locus controls both mortality during the acute encephalomyelitis and viral load during persistence. Most probably, two genes located in the Tmevp3 interval control these two different phenotypes with efficiencies that depend on the age of the mouse at inoculation. Il22, a member of the IL-10 cytokine family, is a candidate gene for the control of mortality during the acute encephalomyelitis. 相似文献

Seedling vigor is among the major determinants of stable stand establishment in direct-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) in temperate regions. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for seedling vigor were identified using 250 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between two japonica rice cultivars Kakehashi and Dunghan Shali. Seedling heights measured at 14 days after sowing were 20.3 and 29.4 cm for Kakehashi and Dunghan Shali, respectively. For the RILs, the height ranged from 14.1 to 31.7 cm. Four putative QTLs associated with seedling height were detected. qPHS3-2, the major QTL that was located on the long arm of chromosome 3, accounted for 26.2 % of the phenotypic variance. Using progeny of the near isogenic lines (NILs) produced by the backcross introduction of a chromosome segment carrying this major QTL into an elite cultivar Iwatekko, we fine-mapped qPHS3-2 to a 81-kb interval between two markers, ID_CAPS_01 and RM16227. Within this mapped region, we identified the gene OsGA20ox1, which is related to gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis. The relative expression levels of GA20ox1 in seedlings of Dunghan Shali and NILs were higher than that of Iwatekko. Concomitantly, the amount of endogenous active GA was higher in Dunghan Shali and the NILs compared to the level detected in Iwatekko. These results indicate that OsGA20ox1 is a strong candidate gene for major QTL controlling seedling vigor in rice. 相似文献

The poinsettia thrips Echinothrips americanus Morgan is a relatively new pest that has spread rapidly worldwide and causes serious damage in both vegetable and ornamental plants. In this study, we investigated if and how effective this pest can be controlled in gerbera by the omnivorous predator Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur). Because herbivores on plants can interact through a shared predator, we also investigated how poinsettia thrips control is affected by the presence of the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), a pest that commonly coexists with E. americanus in gerbera. In laboratory studies, we found that the predator M. pygmaeus fed on both pests when offered together. Olfactometer tests showed a clear preference of the predators for plants infested by whiteflies but not by thrips. In a greenhouse experiment, densities of both pests on single gerbera plants were reduced to very low levels by the predator, either with both pests present together or alone. Hence, predator‐mediated effects between whiteflies and thrips played only a minor role. The plant feeding of the shared predator probably reduced the dependence of predator survival and reproduction on the densities of the two pests, thereby weakening potential predator‐mediated effects. Thus, M. pygmaeus is a good candidate for biological control of both pests in gerbera. However, further research is needed to investigate pest control at larger scales, when the pests can occur on different plants. 相似文献

Background
Hypospadias is a common inborn error of the male urethral development, for which the aetiology is still elusive. Polymorphic variants in genes involved in the masculinisation of male genitalia, such as the androgen receptor, have been associated with some cases of hypospadias. Co-regulators of the androgen receptor start being acknowledged as possible candidates for hormone-resistance instances, which could account for hypospadias. One such molecule, the protein FKBP52, coded by the FKBP4 gene, has an important physiological role in up-regulating androgen receptor activity, an essential step in the development of the male external genitalia. The presence of hypospadias in mice lacking fkbp52 encouraged us to study the sequence and the expression of FKBP4 in boys with isolated hypospadias. 相似文献16.
The small GTPase Rit is a close relative of Ras, and constitutively active Rit can induce oncogenic transformation. Although the effector loops of Rit and Ras are highly related, Rit fails to interact with the majority of the known Ras candidate effector proteins, suggesting that novel cellular targets may be responsible for Rit transforming activity. To gain insight into the cellular function of Rit, we searched for Rit-binding proteins by yeast two-hybrid screening. We identified the C-terminal Rit/Ras interaction domain of a protein we have designated RGL3 (Ral GEF-like 3) that shares 35% sequence identity with the known Ral guanine nucleotide exchange factors (RalGEFs). RGL3, through a C-terminal 99-amino acid domain, interacted in a GTP- and effector loop-dependent manner with Rit and Ras. Importantly, RGL3 exhibited guanine nucleotide exchange activity toward the small GTPase Ral that was stimulated in vivo by the expression of either activated Rit or Ras. These data suggest that RGL3 functions as an exchange factor for Ral and may serve as a downstream effector for both Rit and Ras. 相似文献

Two types of bacteriophage specific to Pseudomonas plecoglossicida, the causative agent of bacterial hemorrhagic ascites disease in cultured ayu fish (Plecoglossus altivelis), were isolated from diseased ayu and the rearing pond water. One type of phage, which formed small plaques, was tentatively classified as a member of the family Myoviridae, and the other type, which formed large plaques, was classified as a member of the family Podoviridae. All 27 strains of P. plecoglossicida examined, which were isolated from diseased ayu from geographically different areas in 1991 to 1999, exhibited quite similar sensitivities to either type of phage. One strain of P. plecoglossicida was highly virulent for ayu, and the 50% lethal dose (LD(50)) when intramuscular injection was used was 10(1.2) CFU fish(-1); in contrast, phage-resistant variants of this organism were less virulent (LD(50), >10(4) CFU fish(-1)). Oral administration of phage-impregnated feed to ayu resulted in protection against experimental infection with P. plecoglossicida. After oral administration of P. plecoglossicida cells of this bacterium were always detected in the kidneys of control fish that did not receive the phage treatment, while the cells quickly disappeared from the phage-treated fish. Bacterial growth in freshwater was lower in the presence of phage, and the number of phage PFU increased rapidly. These results suggest that it may be possible to use phage to control the disease caused by P. plecoglossicida. 相似文献

- Citrus canker is a worldwide‐distributed disease caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri. One of the most used strategies to control the disease is centred on copper‐based compounds that cause environmental problems. Therefore, it is of interest to develop new strategies to manage the disease. Previously, we reported the ability of the siderophore pyochelin, produced by the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, to inhibit in vitro several bacterial species, including X. citri subsp. citri. The action mechanism, addressed with the model bacterium Escherichia coli, was connected to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work aimed to find a non‐pathogenic strain from the lemon phyllosphere that would produce pyochelin and therefore serve in canker biocontrol.
- An isolate that retained its capacity to colonise the lemon phyllosphere and inhibit X. citri subsp. citri was selected and characterised as Pseudomonas protegens CS1. From a liquid culture of this strain, the active compound was purified and identified as the pyochelin enantiomer, enantio‐pyochelin.
- Using the producing strain and the pure compound, both in vitro and in vivo, we determined that the action mechanism of X. citri subsp. citri inhibition also involved the generation of ROS. Finally, the potential application of P. protegens CS1 was evaluated by spraying the bacterium in a model that mimics the natural X. citri subsp. citri infection.
- The ability of P. protegens CS1 to reduce canker formation makes this strain an interesting candidate as a biocontrol agent.

In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the pathways contributing to ATP release from mouse astrocytes during hypoosmotic stress. We first examined the expression of mRNAs for proteins constituting possible ATP- releasing pathways that have been suggested over the past several years. In RT-PCR analysis using both control and osmotically swollen astrocytes, amplification of cDNA fragments of expected size was seen for connexins (Cx32, Cx37, Cx43), pannexin 1 (Pxl), the P2X7 receptor, MRP1 and MDR1, but not CFTR. Inhibitors of exocytotic vesicular release, gap junction hemi-channels, CFTR, MRP1, MDR1, the P2X7 receptor, and volume-sensitive outwardly rectifying chloride channels had no significant effects on the massive ATP release from astrocytes. In contrast, the hypotonicity-induced ATP release from astrocytes was most effectively inhibited by gadolinium (50 μM), an inhibitor of the maxi-anion channel, which has recently been shown to serve as a pathway for ATP release from several other cell types. Thus, we propose that the maxi-anion channel constitutes a major pathway for swelling-induced ATP release from cultured mouse astrocytes as well. 相似文献
