Viruses play a significant role in nutrient cycling within the world’s oceans and are important agents of horizontal gene transfer, but little is know about their entrainment into sea ice or their temporal dynamics once entrained. Nilas, grease ice, pancake ice, first-year sea ice floes up to 78 cm in thickness, and under-ice seawater were sampled widely across Amundsen Gulf (ca. 71° N, 125° W71^\circ \hbox{N}, 125^\circ \hbox{W}) for concentrations of viruses and bacteria. Here, we report exceptionally high virus-to-bacteria ratios in seawater (45–340) and sea ice (93–2,820) during the autumn freeze-up. Virus concentrations ranged from 4.8 to 27 × 106  ml−1 in seawater and, scaled to brine volume, 5.5 to 170 × 107 ml−1 in sea ice. Large enrichment indices indicated processes of active entrainment from source seawater, or viral production within the ice, which was observed in 2 of 3 bottle incubations of sea ice brine at a temperature (-7°C-7^\circ\hbox{C}) and salinity ( 110 \permille110 \permille) approximating that in situ. Median predicted virus-to-bacteria contact rates (relative to underlying seawater) were greatest in the top of thick sea ice (66–78 cm: 130×) and lowest in the bottom of medium-thickness ice (33–37 cm: 23×). The great abundance of viruses and more frequent interactions between bacteria and viruses predicted in sea ice relative to underlying seawater suggest that sea ice may be a hot spot for virally mediated horizontal gene transfer in the polar marine environment.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory and field studies have demonstrated that fluid motion occurs at two locations in growing sea ice: in a network of brine channels and within the skeletal layer at the ice-water interface. Brine channel fluxes estimated using brine channel areal density from natural sea ice and channel velocities from laboratory studies are compared with recent measurements reported in the literature. Fluxes into the porous skeletal layer of sea ice may be estimated using rates of nutrient uptake by ice algae and adjacent seawater nutrient concentrations. Both approaches indicate fluxes of the order of 10-6 cc cm-2 s-1 (l m-2 h-1), which are about equal to fluxes reported in bioirrigated sediments. Fluxes of this magnitude indicate a very short residence time for the liquid phase in the skeletal layer, suggesting that this fluid motion may be important in maintaining the ice algae community.  相似文献

The distributions of bacterial populations in sea ice and underlying seawater were investigated on the continental shelf of the “Terre Adélie” area. A reference station was sampled weekly from January 1991 to January 1992. In winter, the survey included a minimum of six sampling layers: surface and bottom ice, brine, seawater from the interface, and at 0.5 and 2 m depth. In seawater, the total bacterial abundance ranged from 0.5 × 105 cells ml−1 in July to 6.0 × 105 cells ml−1 after ice break. Values reaching 2.5 × 106 cells ml−1 were recorded in the overlying ice cover. Mean cell volumes were twice as high in brine as in seawater. The saprophytic bacterial abundance ranged from 5.0 × 104 CFU (colony-forming units) ml−1 in some winter interface samples to less than 1.0 × 103 CFU ml−1 in most of the summer seawater samples. In sea ice a clear decreasing gradient for most of the studied bacterial parameters from the surface layers towards the bottom layer was found. The ice cover had a discernible impact on underlying seawater, but its influence was restricted to a limited interface layer.  相似文献

We determined fatty acid (FA) profiles and carbon stable isotopic composition of individual FAs (δ13CFA values) from sea ice particulate organic matter (i-POM) and pelagic POM (p-POM) in the Bering Sea during maximum ice extent, ice melt, and ice-free conditions in 2010. Based on FA biomarkers, differences in relative composition of diatoms, dinoflagellates, and bacteria were inferred for i-POM versus p-POM and for seasonal succession stages in p-POM. Proportions of diatom markers were higher in i-POM (16:4n-1, 6.6–8.7 %; 20:5n-3, 19.6–25.9 %) than in p-POM (16:4n-1, 1.2–4.0 %; 20:5n-3, 5.5–14.0 %). The dinoflagellate marker 22:6n-3/20:5n-3 was highest in p-POM. Bacterial FA concentration was higher in the bottom 1 cm of sea ice (14–245 μg L?1) than in the water column (0.6–1.7 μg L?1). Many i-POM δ13CFA values were higher (up to ~10 ‰) than those of p-POM, and i-POM δ13CFA values increased with day length. The higher i-POM δ13CFA values are most likely related to the reduced dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) availability within the semi-closed sea ice brine channel system. Based on a modified Rayleigh equation, the fraction of sea ice DIC fixed in i-POM ranged from 12 to 73 %, implying that carbon was not limiting for primary productivity in the sympagic habitat. These differences in FA composition and δ13CFA values between i-POM and p-POM will aid efforts to track the proportional contribution of sea ice algal carbon to higher trophic levels in the Bering Sea and likely other Arctic seas.  相似文献

The impact of changing physico-chemical boundary conditions in sea ice on biological processes was investigated during a 20-day-long simulated freeze-melt cycle in an 180-m3 mesocosm filled with artificial seawater and addition of a mixed Arctic sea-ice community. Ice formation started at Tair of -15°C with a growth rate of 0.7-1.2 mm h-1 for 10 days. The last 10 days (Tair of=-5°C), ice thickness remained around 20 cm. Ice temperature gradients inside the ice were linear and determined brine salinities. Brine was collected by means of centrifugation and its volume ranged from 5 to 30% of total ice volume. Surface areas of interconnected brine channels were determined with two similar techniques and maximum values ranged between 1.5 and 4.8 m2 kg-1ice. Measurements determined with a modified method varied considerably and differed by a maximal factor of 2.0-6.5. Brine channel surfaces increased during the experiment as a result of the warming of the ice. The inoculated algal community was dominated by flagellates <10 µm. The low diatom biomass increased in the ice after the air temperature rise with rates comparable to field data (µ=0.2-0.3 day-1). Comparison with brine salinities points towards the hypothesis of vertical brine stability being a controlling factor for ice algal growth. We infer from brine channel surface measurements that persistence of brine channel surfaces during spring might be an important prerequisite for the commencement of net diatom biomass accumulation. Advantages and limitations of mesoscale mesocosms as alternatives in ice biological work are discussed.  相似文献

Knowledge on the relative effects of biological activity and precipitation/dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in influencing the air-ice CO2 exchange in sea-ice-covered season is currently lacking. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal occurrence of CaCO3 and other biogeochemical parameters in sea ice are still not well described. Here we investigated autotrophic and heterotrophic activity as well as the precipitation/dissolution of CaCO3 in subarctic sea ice in South West Greenland. Integrated over the entire ice season (71 days), the sea ice was net autotrophic with a net carbon fixation of 56 mg C m?2, derived from a sea-ice-related gross primary production of 153 mg C m?2 and a bacterial carbon demand of 97 mg C m?2. Primary production contributed only marginally to the TCO2 depletion of the sea ice (7–25 %), which was mainly controlled by physical export by brine drainage and CaCO3 precipitation. The net biological production could only explain 4 % of this sea-ice-driven CO2 uptake. Abiotic processes contributed to an air-sea CO2 uptake of 1.5 mmol m?2 sea ice day?1, and dissolution of CaCO3 increased the air-sea CO2 uptake by 36 % compared to a theoretical estimate of melting CaCO3-free sea ice. There was a considerable spatial and temporal variability of CaCO3 and the other biogeochemical parameters measured (dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients).  相似文献

The porous medium of sea ice, a surface-rich environment characterized by low temperature and high salinity, has been proposed as a favorable site for horizontal gene transfer, but few measurements are available to assess the possibility of this mode of evolution in ice. Here, we report the first measurements of dissolved DNA in sea ice, measured by fluorescent dye staining of centrifugal-filter-concentrated samples of melted ice. Newly formed landfast and pack ice on the Canadian Arctic Shelf (ca. 71°N, 125°W) contained higher concentrations (scaled to volume of brine) of the major components of dissolved DNA—extracellular DNA and viruses—than the underlying seawater. Dissolved DNA was dominated by extracellular DNA in surface seawater (up to 95%), with viruses making up relatively larger fractions at depths below 100 m (up to 27%) and in thick sea ice (66–78 cm; up to 100%). Extracellular DNA was heterogeneously distributed, with concentrations up to 135 μg DNA L−1 brine detected in landfast sea ice, higher than previously reported from any marine environment. Additionally, extracellular DNA was significantly highly enriched at the base of ice of medium thickness (33–37 cm), suggestive of in situ production. Relative to underlying seawater, higher concentrations of extracellular DNA, viruses, and bacteria, and the availability of numerous surfaces for attachment within the ice matrix suggest that sea ice may be a hotspot for HGT in the marine environment.  相似文献

Nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a, bacterial biomass and relative activity of denitrifying organisms were investigated from ice-core, brine and underlying water samples in February 1998 in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. Examined sea ice was typical for the Baltic Sea; ice bulk salinity varied from 0.1 to 1.6 psu, and in underlying water salinity was from 4.2 to 4.7 psu. In 2- to 3-months-old sea ice (thickness 0.4–0.6 m), sea-ice communities were at the winter stage; chl-a concentrations were generally below 1 mg m−3 and heterotrophic organisms composed 7–20% of organism assemblage. In 1-month-old ice (thickness 0.2–0.25 m), an ice spring bloom was already developing and chl-a concentrations were up to 5.6 mg m−3. In relation to low salinity, high concentrations of NH+ 4, NO 2, PO3+ 4 and SiOH4 were found in the ice column. The results suggest that the upper part of ice accumulates atmospheric nutrient load during the ice season, and nutrients in the upper 10–20 cm of ice are mainly of atmospheric origin. The most important biological processes controlling the sea-ice nutrient status are nutrient regeneration, nutrient uptake and nitrogen transformations. Nutrient regeneration is specially active in the middle parts of the 50- to 60-cm-thick ice and subsequent accumulation of nutrients probably enhances the ice spring bloom. Nitrite accumulation and denitrifying activity were located in the same ice layers with nutrient regeneration, which together with the observed significant correlation between the concentrations of nitrogenous nutrients points to active nitrogen transformations occurring in the interior layers of sea ice in the Baltic Sea. Summary This paper focusses on the links between growth, persistence and decay of sea ice and the structure of Antarctic marine ecosystems on different spatial and temporal scales. Sea-ice growth may divide an oceanic ecosystem into two dissimilar compartments: (1) the water column, with primary production controlled by the reduction of irradiative fluxes due to the snow-laden sea-ice cover and thermo-haline convection, and (2) the pore space within the ice with incorporated organisms switching from a planktonic to a kryohaline mode of life. In the ice, physical boundary conditions are set by (1) the irradiance which is controlled by the optical properties of snow and ice and (2) the ambient temperature which controls salinity and brine volume. Partly due to the high levels of biomass within the sea-ice system, interaction between different groups of organisms concentrates on the planar environment predefined by the ice cover. As a result of regional structuring of ecosystems, four sea-ice regimes may be recognized: seasonal pack ice, coastal zone, perennial pack ice, and marginal ice zone. These regimes are interwoven through the temporal structuring of ecosystems brought about by ice-cover seasonality and ice drift. In comparison with open-water pelagic ecosystems, sea ice appears of particular importance as it partly inverts the ecosystem structure and enhances the degree of ecological variability.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Physical, biogeochemical and photosynthetic parameters were measured in sea ice brine and ice core bottom samples in the north-western Weddell Sea during early spring 2006. Sea ice brines collected from sackholes were characterised by cold temperatures (range −7.4 to −3.8°C), high salinities (range 61.4–118.0), and partly elevated dissolved oxygen concentrations (range 159–413 μmol kg−1) when compared to surface seawater. Nitrate (range 0.5–76.3 μmol kg−1), dissolved inorganic phosphate (range 0.2–7.0 μmol kg−1) and silicic acid (range 74–285 μmol kg−1) concentrations in sea ice brines were depleted when compared to surface seawater. In contrast, NH4 + (range 0.3–23.0 μmol kg−1) and dissolved organic carbon (range 140–707 μmol kg−1) were enriched in the sea ice brines. Ice core bottom samples exhibited moderate temperatures and brine salinities, but high algal biomass (4.9–435.5 μg Chl a l−1 brine) and silicic acid depletion. Pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry was used for the determination of the photosynthetic parameters F v/F m, α, rETRmax and E k. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, F v/F m, ranged from 0.101 to 0.500 (average 0.284 ± 0.132) and 0.235 to 0.595 (average 0.368 ± 0.127) in the sea ice internal and bottom communities, respectively. The fluorometric measurements indicated medium ice algal photosynthetic activity both in the internal and bottom communities of the sea ice. An observed lack of correlation between biogeochemical and photosynthetic parameters was most likely due to temporally and spatially decoupled physical and biological processes in the sea ice brine channel system, and was also influenced by the temporal and spatial resolution of applied sampling techniques.  相似文献

Microscale photographs were taken of the ice bottom to examine linkages of algal chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass distribution with bottom ice features in thick Arctic first-year sea ice during a spring field program which took place from May 5 to 21, 2003. The photographic technique developed in this paper has resulted in the first in situ observations of microscale variability in bottom ice algae distribution in Arctic first-year sea ice in relation to ice morphology. Observations of brine channel diameter (1.65–2.68 mm) and number density (5.33–10.35 per 100 cm2) showed that the number of these channels at the bottom of thick first-year sea ice may be greater than previously measured on extracted ice samples. A variogram analysis showed that over areas of low chl a biomass (≤20.7 mg chl a m−2), patchiness in bottom ice chl a biomass was at the scale of brine layer spacing and small brine channels (∼1–3 mm). Over areas of high chl a biomass (≥34.6 mg chl a m−2), patchiness in biomass was related to the spacing of larger brine channels on the ice bottom (∼10–26 mm). Brine layers and channels are thought to provide microscale maxima of light, nutrient replenishment and space availability which would explain the small scale patchiness over areas of low algal biomass. However, ice melt and erosion near brine channels may play a more important role in areas with high algal biomass and low snow cover.  相似文献

Denitrification activity and oxygen dynamics in Arctic sea ice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Denitrification and oxygen dynamics were investigated in the sea ice of Franklin Bay (70°N), Canada. These investigations were complemented with measurements of denitrification rates in sea ice from different parts of the Arctic (69°N–85°N). Potential for bacterial denitrification activity (5–194 μmol N m−2 day−1) and anammox activity (3–5 μmol N m−2 day−1) in melt water from both first-year and multi-year sea ice was found. These values correspond to 27 and 7%, respectively, of the benthic denitrification and anammox activities in Arctic sediments. Although we report only potential denitrification and anammox rates, we present several indications that active denitrification in sea ice may occur in Franklin Bay (and elsewhere): (1) despite sea ice-algal primary production in the lower sea ice layers, heterotrophic activity resulted in net oxygen consumption in the sea ice of 1–3 μmol l−1 sea ice per day at in situ light conditions, suggesting that O2 depletion may occur prior to the spring bloom. (2) The ample organic carbon (DOC) and NO3 present in sea ice may support an active denitrification population. (3) Measurements of O2 conditions in melted sea ice cores showed very low bulk concentrations, and in some cases anoxic conditions prevailed. (4) Laboratory studies using planar optodes for measuring the high-resolution two-dimensional O2 distributions in sea ice confirmed the very dynamic and heterogeneous O2 distribution in sea ice, displaying a mosaic of microsites of high and low O2 concentrations. Brine enclosures and channels were strongly O2 depleted in actively melting sea ice, and anoxic conditions in parts of the brine system would favour anaerobic processes.  相似文献

Viral abundance, burst sizes, lytic production and temperate phage were investigated in land-fast ice at two sites in Prydz Bay Antarctica (68°S, 77°E) between April and November 2008. Both ice cores and brine were collected. There was no seasonal pattern in viral or bacterial numbers. Across the two sites virus abundances ranged between 0.5 × 105 and 5.1 × 105 viruses ml−1 in melted ice cores and 0.6 × 105–3.5 × 105 viruses ml−1 in brine, and bacterial abundances between 2.7 × 104 and 17.3 × 104 cells ml−1 in melted ice cores and 3.9 × 104–32.5 × 104 cells ml−1 in brine. Virus to bacterium ratios (VBR) showed a clear seasonal pattern in ice cores with lowest values in winter (range 1.2–20.8), while VBRs in brine were lower (0.2–4.9). Lytic viral production range from undetectable to 2.0 × 104 viruses ml−1 h−1 in ice cores with maximum rates in September and November. In brine maximum, lytic viral production occurred in November (1.18 × 104 viruses ml−1 h−1). Low burst sizes were typical (3.94–4.03 viruses per bacterium in ice cores and 3.16–4.0 viruses per bacterium in brine) with unusually high levels of visibly infected cells—range 40–50%. This long-term investigation revealed that viral activity was apparent within the sea ice throughout its annual cycle. The findings are discussed within the context of limited data available on viruses in sea ice.  相似文献

Summary In the eastern Weddell Sea on several transects from ice-covered, through ice melt, to open-ocean stations, total and heterotrophic bacteria were estimated to document an enhanced bacteriological biomass expected near the ice edge. The highest numbers of bacteria were found in melted ice cores, with 4.2·103 CFUml–1 and 1.1·107 Cells ml–1. Although brine from pore water samples average more than one order of magnitude less cells per ml, the highest bacterial production, 2.2·107 cells l–1 day–1, was recorded in brine samples. All quantitatively studied bacterial parameters were lower under the ice than in the ice samples but there were no clear vertical gradients in the water column. In the studied spring situation, sea ice occurrence seems to play only a minor role in the general distribution of the seawater bacterioplankton. The bacterial community structure was investigated by carrying out 29 morphological and biochemical tests on 118 isolated strains. The bacterial communities inhabiting Antarctic pack ice differ from those found in underlying seawater. Although non fermentative Gram-negative rods were always dominant in seawater, Vibrio sp. represented more than 25% of the strains isolated from some ice samples. The results clearly indicated that a large majority of the bacteria isolated from seawater must be considered psychrotrophic but that truly psychrophilic strains occurred in melted ice and brine samples.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Summary Cores and brine samples from sea ice of the Weddell Sea were analyzed for nutrients (phosphate, nitrate and silicate), salinity and chlorophyll a during winter. Stratigraphic analyses of the cores were also carried out. Bulk nutrient concentrations in the sea ice fluctuated widely and did not correlate with salinity. Nutrient concentrations in cores were normalized to sea-water salinity to facilitate comparison. They varied between zero and two or three times those measured in the water column. Differentiation into young and old sea ice, however, revealed that nutrient concentrations in the young ice in many cases corresponded to those in surface seawater. In older ice, nutrients showed signs of increase as well as depletion or exhaustion relative to the water column. Differentiation of core sections according to ice textural classes and analyses of brine samples clarified some relationships between nutrients, salinity and algal biomass. Most of the changes in the nutrient concentrations are attributed to an increase in biological activity as the seasons progress. Silicate is expected to become the first nutrient likely to limit growth of diatoms in the ice which is ascribed to slower regeneration or dissolution of this nutrient relative to phosphate and nitrate. A consequence of silicate exhaustion may be the succession of different algal assemblages, from a diatom dominated community to one in which autotrophic flagellates form the largest component.  相似文献

Bacterial carbon demand, an important component of ecosystem dynamics in polar waters and sea ice, is a function of both bacterial production (BP) and respiration (BR). BP has been found to be generally higher in sea ice than underlying waters, but rates of BR and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) are poorly characterized in sea ice. Using melted ice core incubations, community respiration (CR), BP, and bacterial abundance (BA) were studied in sea ice and at the ice–water interface (IWI) in the Western Canadian Arctic during the spring and summer 2008. CR was converted to BR empirically. BP increased over the season and was on average 22 times higher in sea ice as compared with the IWI. Rates in ice samples were highly variable ranging from 0.2 to 18.3 μg C l−1 d−1. BR was also higher in ice and on average ~10 times higher than BP but was less variable ranging from 2.39 to 22.5 μg C l−1 d−1. Given the high variability in BP and the relatively more stable rates of BR, BP was the main driver of estimated BGE (r = 0.97, < 0.0001). We conclude that microbial respiration can consume a significant proportion of primary production in sea ice and may play an important role in biogenic CO2 fluxes between the sea ice and atmosphere.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of bacterial abundance and biomass was investigated in relation to algal biomass in ice cores taken from drifting ice floes in two Arctic shelf areas: the Barents Sea and the Laptev Sea. Bacteria were not homogeneously distributed throughout the cores but occurred in dense layers. Different types of distribution patterns were found: either a single maximum occurred inside or at the bottom of the ice floe or maxima were found in different parts of the floes. Bacterial concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 36.7 · 105 cells ml−1. The size spectra of sea-ice bacteria were determined by image analysis. Cell sizes showed considerable variation between the ice floes. In multi-year sea ice, the largest bacteria were observed in the area of an internal chlorophyll a maximum. No specific vertical distribution patterns were found in first-year ice floes. Bacterial biomass for the ice cores ranged from 19.2 to 79.2 mg C m−2, and the ratio of bacterial:ice algal biomass ranged from 0.43 to 10.42. Organic matter produced by the sea ice microbial community (SIMCo) is an important link between sea ice dynamics and secondary production in near‐shore food webs of Antarctica. Sea ice conditions in McMurdo Sound were quantified from time series of MODIS satellite images for Sept. 1 through Feb. 28 of 2007–2015. A predictable sea ice persistence gradient along the length of the Sound and evidence for a distinct change in sea ice dynamics in 2011 were observed. We used stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) of SIMCo, suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) and shallow water (10–20 m) macroinvertebrates to reveal patterns in trophic structure of, and incorporation of organic matter from SIMCo into, benthic communities at eight sites distributed along the sea ice persistence gradient. Mass‐balance analysis revealed distinct trophic architecture among communities and large fluxes of SIMCo into the near‐shore food web, with the estimates ranging from 2 to 84% of organic matter derived from SIMCo for individual species. Analysis of patterns in density, and biomass of macroinvertebrate communities among sites allowed us to model net incorporation of organic matter from SIMCo, in terms of biomass per unit area (g/m2), into benthic communities. Here, organic matter derived from SIMCo supported 39 to 71 per cent of total biomass. Furthermore, for six species, we observed declines in contribution of SIMCo between years with persistent sea ice (2008–2009) and years with extensive sea ice breakout (2012–2015). Our data demonstrate the vital role of SIMCo in ecosystem function in Antarctica and strong linkages between sea ice dynamics and near‐shore secondary productivity. These results have important implications for our understanding of how benthic communities will respond to changes in sea ice dynamics associated with climate change and highlight the important role of shallow water macroinvertebrate communities as sentinels of change for the Antarctic marine ecosystem.  相似文献

This study documents, for the first time, the abundance and species composition of protist assemblages in Arctic sea ice during the dark winter period. Lack of knowledge of sea-ice assemblages during the dark period has left questions about the retention and survival of protist species that initiate the ice algal bloom. Sea-ice and surface water samples were collected between December 27, 2007 and January 31, 2008 within the Cape Bathurst flaw lead, Canadian Beaufort Sea. Samples were analyzed for protist identification and counts, chlorophyll (chl) a, and total particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations. Sea-ice chl a concentrations (max. 0.27 μg l−1) and total protist abundances (max. 4 × 103 cells l−1) were very low, indicating minimal retention of protists in the ice during winter. The diversity of winter ice protists (134 taxa) was comparable to spring ice assemblages. Pennate diatoms dominated the winter protist assemblage numerically (averaging 77% of total protist abundances), with Nitzschia frigida being the most abundant species. Only 56 taxa were identified in surface waters, where dinoflagellates were the dominant group. We describe a model based on diffusion theory and the temperature-dependent mechanism of brine concentration in sea ice to argue that, if viruses partition with bacteria into sea-ice brine inclusions, contact rates between the two can be higher in winter sea ice than in seawater, increasing the probability of infection and possible virus production. To examine this hypothesis, we determined viral and bacterial concentrations in select winter sea-ice horizons using epifluorescence microscopy. Viral concentrations ranged from 1.6 to 82 x 10(6) ml(-1) of brine volume of the ice, with highest values in brines from coldest (-24 to -31 degrees C) ice horizons. Calculated virus-bacteria contact rates in underlying -1 degrees C seawater were similar to those in brines of -11 degrees C ice but up to 600 times lower than those in ice brines at or below -24 degrees C. We then incubated native bacterial and viral assemblages from winter sea ice for 8 days in brine at a temperature (-12 degrees C) and salinity ( approximately 160 psu) near expected in situ values, monitoring their concentrations microscopically. While different cores yielded different results, consistent with known spatial heterogeneity in sea ice, these experiments provided unambiguous evidence for viral persistence and production, as well as for bacterial growth, in -12 degrees C brine.  相似文献
