Energy-positive sewage treatment can be achieved by implementation of oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification/denitrification (OLAND) in the main water line, as the latter does not require organic carbon and therefore allows maximum energy recovery through anaerobic digestion of organics. To test the feasibility of mainstream OLAND, the effect of a gradual temperature decrease from 29 to 15 °C and a chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N increase from 0 to 2 was tested in an OLAND rotating biological contactor operating at 55–60 mg NH4 +–N?L?1 and a hydraulic retention time of 1 h. Moreover, the effect of the operational conditions and feeding strategies on the reactor cycle balances, including NO and N2O emissions were studied in detail. This study showed for the first time that total nitrogen removal rates of 0.5 g N?L?1?day?1 can be maintained when decreasing the temperature from 29 to 15 °C and when low nitrogen concentration and moderate COD levels are treated. Nitrite accumulation together with elevated NO and N2O emissions (5 % of N load) were needed to favor anammox compared with nitratation at low free ammonia (<0.25 mg N?L?1), low free nitrous acid (<0.9 μg N?L?1), and higher DO levels (3–4 mg O2?L?1). Although the total nitrogen removal rates showed potential, the accumulation of nitrite and nitrate resulted in lower nitrogen removal efficiencies (around 40 %), which should be improved in the future. Moreover, a balance should be found in the future between the increased NO and N2O emissions and a decreased energy consumption to justify OLAND mainstream treatment.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the pollutant uptake capability of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) in terms of bioaccumulation, enrichment, and translocation of heavy metals grown in sugar mill effluent. Results showed that the maximum fresh weight (328.48 ± 2.04 gm kg?1), total chlorophyll content (2.13 ± 2.03 mg g?1 fwt), and relative growth rate, RGR (11.89 gg?1 d?1) of P. stratiotes were observed at 75% concentration of the sugar mill effluent after 60 days of phytoremediation experiment. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) of different heavy metals was greater than 1 with 50% and 75% concentrations of sugar mill effluent and this indicated that P. stratiotes was hyperaccumulator or phytoremediator of these metals. The enrichment factor (EF < 2 for Cu, Fe, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Mn) and (EF > 2 for Cd) indicated that P. stratiotes mineral enrichment deficient and it moderately enriched the different heavy metals. Moreover, translocation factor (TF) was less than 1 which indicated the low mobility of metals in different parts (root and leaves) of P. stratiotes after phytoremediation. Therefore, P. stratiotes can be used for phytotreatment of sugar mill effluent up to 50% to 75% concentrations and considered as hyperaccumulator aquatic plant for different heavy metals and other pollutants from the contaminated effluents.  相似文献

Fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (Cr, Ni, As, Cd, Pb, and Hg) were quantified in 19 surface water sites of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. The total concentrations of 15 PAHs and six heavy metals in the 19 sample sites ranged from 130.8 ng L?1 to 227.5 ng L?1 and 3.2 μg L?1 to 6.0 μg L?1, respectively. The mean concentration of As was the highest among the six heavy metals (2.1 ± 0.3 μg L?1), followed by Cr (0.5 ± 0.3 μg L?1), Ni (1.3 ± 0.1 μg L?1), Cd (0.2 ± 0.01 μg L?1), Pb (0.07 ± 0.08 μ g L?1) and Hg (0.05 ± 0.08 μg L?1). The isomer ratio results suggest that PAHs at most sites were mainly from petroleum combustion, while coal and biomass combustion was the main source at sites 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 14, and 17. Based on principal component analysis, the main source of heavy metals was anthropogenic activities and weathering of bedrocks. Depending on characteristic of RQ(NCs) ≥ 1 and RQ(MPCs) < 1, BaA showed higher potential ecological risk than other PAHs, therefore, all sampling site needed to be paid much more attention, included some remedial actions. Meanwhile, after assessing human health risk of heavy metal, it was unlikely to experience adverse health effects, even exposing through more pathways and six kinds of heavy metals simultaneously.  相似文献

High salinity wastewaters have limited treatment options due to the occurrence of salt inhibition in conventional biological treatments. Using recirculating marine aquaculture effluents as a case study, this work explored the use of Constructed Wetlands as a treatment option for nutrient and salt loads reduction. Three different substrates were tested for nutrient adsorption, of which expanded clay performed better. This substrate adsorbed 0.31 mg kg?1 of NH4 +?N and 5.60 mg kg?1 of PO4 3??P and 6.9 mg kg?1 dissolved salts after 7 days of contact. Microcosms with Typha latifolia planted in expanded clay and irrigated with aquaculture wastewater (salinity 2.4%, 7 days hydraulic retention time, for 4 weeks), were able to remove 94% NH4 +?N (inlet 0.25 ± 0.13 mg L?1), 78% NO2 ??N (inlet 0.78 ± 0.62 mg L?1), 46% NO3 ??N (inlet 18.83 ± 8.93 mg L?1) whereas PO4 3??P was not detected (inlet 1.41 ± 0.21 mg L?1). Maximum salinity reductions of 52% were observed. Despite some growth inhibition, plants remained viable, with 94% survival rate. Daily treatment dynamics studies revealed rapid PO4 3??P adsorption, unbalancing the N:P ratio and possibly affecting plant development. An integrated treatment approach, coupled with biomass valorization, is suggested to provide optimal resource management possibilities.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale study was conducted in a 20.0-L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to explore the feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic carbon and nitrogen from abattoir wastewater. The reactor was operated under three different combinations of aerobic-anoxic sequence, viz., (4+4), (5+3), and (5+4) h of total react period, with influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) level of 2200 ± 50 and 125 ± 5 mg L?1, respectively. In (5+4) h cycle, a maximum 90.27% of ammonia reduction corresponding to initial NH4+-N value of 122.25 mg L?1 and 91.36% of organic carbon removal corresponding to initial SCOD value of 2215.25 mg L?1 have been achieved, respectively. The biokinetic parameters such as yield coefficient (Y), endogenous decay constant (kd), and half-velocity constant (Ks) were also determined to improve the design and operation of package effluent treatment plants comprising SBR units. The specific denitrification rate (qDN) during anoxic condition was estimated as 6.135 mg N/g mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS)·h on 4-h average contact period. The value of Y, kd and Ks for carbon oxidation and nitrification were found to be in the range of 0.6225–0.6952 mg VSS/mg SCOD, 0.0481–0.0588 day?1, and 306.56–320.51 mg L?1, and 0.2461–0.2541 mg VSS/mg NH4+-N, 0.0324–0.0565 day?1, and 38.28–50.08 mg L?1, respectively, for different combinations of react periods.  相似文献

The effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of NO) on cadmium (Cd) toxicity in lettuce seedlings were studied. SNP was added into hydroponic systems or sprayed directly on the leaves of plants grown with and without Cd. Excess supply of Cd (100 μM) caused growth inhibition, dramatically increased Cd accumulation in both leaves and roots, and inhibited the absorption of Ca, Mg, Fe and Cu. Excess Cd also decreased activities of superoxide dismutase peroxidase and catalase in leaves and roots, and increased the accumulation of superoxide anion (O 2 ·? ), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Root or foliar applications of exogenous NO alleviated Cd-induced growth suppression, especially root application of 250 μM SNP and foliar addition of 500 μM SNP. Addition of SNP promoted the chlorophyll synthesis suggesting that the photosynthesis was up-regulated. Exogenous NO increased Cd-decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes and markedly diminished Cd-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MDA accumulation. Moreover, the absorption of Ca, Mg, Fe and Cu was increased, indicating that exogenous NO stimulated H+-ATPase activity to promote sequestration or uptake of ions. In addition, exogenous NO also inhibited Cd transfer from roots to shoots, which may indicate that Cd retention in roots induced by NO plays a significant role in Cd tolerance in lettuce seedlings. These data suggest that under Cd stress, exogenous NO improves photosynthesis by increasing chlorophyll synthesis, protects lettuce seedlings against oxidative damage by scavenging ROS, helps to maintain the uptake of nutrient elements, and inhibits Cd transferred to shoots effectively.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition, the effect of different concentrations of nitrogen (16.5-344 mg ?L?1), phosphorus (9–45 mg? L?1), iron (9–45 mg? L?1) and salinity levels (0–20 psu) on lipid production in the green microalga Scenedesmus dimorphus KMITL, a new strain isolated from a tropical country, Thailand, were studied. The alga was isolated from a freshwater fish pond, and cultured in Chlorella medium by varying one parameter at a time. The main fatty acid composition of this strain was C16–C18 (97.52 %) fatty acids. A high lipid content was observed in conditions of 16.5 mg? L?1-N, or 22 mg ?L?1-P, or 45 mg ?L?1-Fe, or 5 psu salinity, which accumulated lipids to 20.3?±?0.4, 19.4?±?0.2, 24.7?±?0.5, and 14.3?±?0.2 % of algal biomass, respectively. Increasing lipid content and lipid productivity was noted when the alga was cultured under high iron concentration and high salinity, as well as under reduced phosphorus conditions, whereas nitrogen limitation only resulted in an increased lipid content.  相似文献

To assess the potential of Pb+2 accumulation in different parts of Acacia victoria, one year old A. victoria seedlings were exposed to Pb2+(NO3)2 in 5 different concentrations: 0, 50, 250, 500 and 1000 (mg Pb2+ L?1) for 45 days. Subsequently, Pb2+ uptake was quantified in roots, shoots and leaves of the seedlings by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). In addition, some physiological parameters such as biomass production, shoots and roots length, plant appearance, tissue concentrations and chlorophyll content were examined. Tissue concentrations increased as Pb2+ concentration increased for A. victoria. The visible toxicity symptoms (chlorosis and necrosis) appeared only to the highest concentration (1000 mg Pb2+ L?1), resulting in photosynthesis decrease, plant height, root length and dry biomass reduction. Almost 70% (up to 3580 mg Kg?1 of dry tissue) from the Pb2+ was accumulated in the entire plant tissues was retained in the roots in the seedlings exposed to 1000 mg Pb2+ L?1. The seedlings accumulated between 403 to 913 mg Kg?1 of Pb2+ in shoots and 286 to 650 mg Kg?1 of Pb2+ in leaves at different treatments. Bioconcentration and translocation factors were determined 5.14 and 0.255, respectively. The results show that A. victoria is suitable for lead-phytostabilization in Pb2+-contaminated soil.  相似文献

Initial biomass density (IBD) is an important factor that affects the viability and productivity of microalgae particularly when sunlight is used for photosynthesis. In this paper, the effect of IBD on photosynthesis, growth, and astaxanthin production of the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis during the astaxanthin induction stage was studied in a glass column photobioreactor during different seasons. Of seven IBDs, i.e., 0.1, 0.5, 0.8, 1.5, 2.7, 3.5, and 5.0 g L?1 tested, 0.8 g L?1 IBD was optimal and resulted in the highest astaxanthin productivity of 17.1 mg L?1 day?1. Severe photoinhibition of photosynthesis occurred at low IBD (e.g., 0.1 g L?1) cultures, especially in the winter, and severe light limitation to individual cells in high IBD cultures (>2.7 g L?1) were responsible for reduced astaxanthin production. This was the first report quantitatively assessing IBD as the key limiting factor for astaxanthin production in H. pluvialis outdoor cultivation.  相似文献

Suspension culture of Ajuga lobata D. Don cells provides a method of synthesis of the phytoecdysteroid 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) which can regulate the molting process of larvae. We characterized the culture conditions to optimize 20E production. Growth of A. lobata D. Don cells fits the logistic equation curve with a growth cycle of 19 days. Medium conductivity was negatively correlated with dry cell weight and 20E accumulation, thus could be used to determine the optimal time for cell harvest. Continuous subculture reduced 20E synthesis, but supplementing medium with 20E precursors mevalonic (MVA), α-Pinene, and nitric oxide (NO) can significantly promote cell growth and influence 20E accumulation. Combination of α-Pinene, MVA, and SNP significantly elevated 20E accumulation, thus may synergistically enhance 20E synthesis in A. lobata D. Don. The optimal concentrations of α-Pinene, MVA, and NO donor SNP in suspension culture were 50 μL L?1, 10 mg L?1, and 80 μmol L?1.  相似文献

The present work was aimed at analysing the role of inoculated microalgae in nutrient dynamics, bioremediation and biomass production of sewage water. Preliminary microscopic analyses of sewage water revealed the presence of different algal groups, with predominance of Cyanophyta. Among the inoculated strains, Calothrix showed highest dry cell weight (916.67 mg L?1), chlorophyll and carotenoid content in tap water + sewage water (1:1) treatment. Significant removal of NO3-N ranging from 57–78% and PO4-P (44–91%) was recorded in microalgae inoculated tap water + sewage water. The total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity of tap water + sewage water after incubation with Calothrix sp. decreased by 28.5 and 28.0%, accompanied by an increase in dissolved oxygen from 4.4 to 6.4 mg L?1 on the 20th day. Our investigation revealed the robustness of Calothrix sp. in sequestering nutrients (N and P), improving water quality and proliferating in sewage water.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to use a counter-current leaching process (CCLP) with leachate treatment to develop a remediation process for contaminated soils at a small-arms shooting range (SASR). The soil contaminant concentrations were 245 mg Cu kg?1, 3,368 mg Pb kg?1, 73 mg Sb kg?1, and 177 mg Zn kg?1. The CCLP includes three acid leaching steps (1M H2SO4 + 4M NaCl, t = 1 h, T = 20°C, soil suspension = 100 g L?1), followed by one water rinsing step (1 h). Seven counter-current remediation cycles were completed, and the average resulting metal removals were 93.2 ± 3.5% of Cu, 91.5 ± 5.7% of Pb, 82.2 ± 10.9% of Sb, and 30.0 ± 11.4% of Zn. The metal leaching performances decreased with the number of completed cycles. Soil treated with the CCLP with leachate treatment process met the USEPA threshold criteria of 5 mg Pb L?1 in the TCLP leachate. The CCLP allows a decrease of the water use by 32.9 m3 t?1 and the chemicals’ consumption by approximately 2,650 kg H2SO4, 6,014 kg NaCl, and 1,150 kg NaOH per ton of treated soil, in comparison to standard leaching processes. This corresponds to 78%, 69%, 83%, and 67% of reduction, respectively.  相似文献

Light source can affect the stomata opening, photosynthesis process, and pigment content in microalgae cells. In this study, growth rate, chlorophyll a (chl a) content, and electrogenic capability of Desmodesmus sp. A8 were investigated under incandescent and fluorescent lamps. Growth rate, productivity, and chl a content of strain A8 exposed to incandescent light were recorded as 0.092 ± 0.010 day?1, 0.019 ± 0.008 g L?1 day?1, and 15.10 ± 1.40 mg L?1, which decreased to 0.086 ± 0.006 day?1, 0.012 ± 0.004 g L?1 day?1, and 10.06 ± 1.59 mg L?1, respectively, under fluorescent light. The stable current density of bioelectrochemical systems inculcated with strain A8 under incandescent and fluorescent lamps were 249.76 and 158.41 mA m?2 at ?0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, coupling with dissolved oxygen within biofilm decreasing from 15.91 to 10.80 mg L?1. This work demonstrated that illuminating microalgae under an incandescent lamp can improve biomass production and electrogenic capabilities.  相似文献

In this study, a novel halophilic cyanobacterium was isolated and identified as Euhalothece sp. KZN. This fast-growing strain had the ability to synthesise high yields (12 mg g?1) of C-phycocyanin (C-PC), a highly fluorescent blue light-harvesting pigment with numerous potential uses in the biotechnology and commercial sectors. This study elucidated the individual and interactive role of different nutrients in BG11 growth medium for enhancing C-PC production in Euhalothece sp. KZN. Nine components of BG11 medium were screened for their effects via fractional factorial design (FFD). The results revealed a significant influence of nutrients, viz. MgSO4, NaNO3 and minor nutrients (citric acid, EDTA-iron citrate, CaCl2 and Na2CO3) on C-PC yield. These three components were further explored for their optimum concentration for enhancing C-PC production using a central composite design. The optimum values for these essential nutrients were found to be as follows: 0.10 g L?1 of MgSO4, 1.67 g L?1 of NaNO3 and 10 mL L?1 of minor nutrients which resulted in a 280% increase in C-PC yield with predicted and actual values of 43.97 and 45 mg g?1, respectively. Euhalothece sp. KZN is a strong potential candidate for C-PC production and can be further exploited to produce this industrially valuable compound.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the pH, phosphate, and nitrate in the process of arsenic absorption by Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), using the surface response methodology, in order to optimize the process. The plants were exposed to a concentration of arsenic of 0.5 mg L?1 (NaAsO2) over a period of 10 days. The results indicated optimal levels for the absorption of arsenic by E. crassipes at pH equal to 7.5, absence of phosphate, and minimum nitrate level of 0.0887 mmol L?1. For the tested concentration, E. crassipes was able to accumulate 498.4 mg kg?1 of As (dry base) in its plant tissue and to reduce 83% of the initial concentration present in the aqueous medium where it was cultivated. The concentration of phosphorus in solution linearly increased the phosphorus content in the plants and negatively influenced the absorption of arsenic. The concentration of 0.5 mg L?1 of As did not significantly affect the relative growth rate (RGR) and the tolerance index (TI). 94% of As (III) initially solubilized in water was converted by the end of the experiment period into As (V). The water hyacinth was important in the phytoremediation of arsenic when cultivated under optimal conditions for its removal.  相似文献

A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on arsenic (As) uptake and antioxidative enzymes in fronds of Pteris cretica var. nervosa (As hyperaccumulator) and Pteris ensiformis (non-hyperaccumulator). Plants were exposed to 2 mg L?1 As(III), As(V) or dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and IAA concentrations for 14 d. The biomass and total As in the plants significantly increased at 30 mg L?1 IAA. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities significantly increased with IAA addition. Catalase (CAT) activities showed a significant increase in P. ensiformis exposed to three As species at 30 or 50 mg L?1 IAA but varied in P. cretica var. nervosa. Peroxidase (POD) activities were unchanged in P. ensiformis except for a significant decrease at 50 mg L?1 IAA under As(III) treatment. However, a significant increase was observed in P. cretica var. nervosa at 10 mg L?1 IAA under As(III) or DMA treatment and at 50 mg L?1 IAA under As(V) treatment. Under DMA stress, malondialdehyde contents in fronds of P. cretica var. nervosa showed a significant decrease at 10 mg L?1 IAA but remained unchanged in P. ensiformis. Therefore, IAA enhanced As uptake and frond POD activity in P. cretica var. nervosa under As stress.  相似文献

A column transport experiment was conducted to examine the release and methylation of Hg using Hg contaminated sediment from the floodplain of the South River near Waynesboro, Virginia. Three input solutions were sequentially introduced into the column. Input 1 was unamended South River water, Input 2 was river water amended with 100 mg L?1 SO4 and 3600 mg L?1 lactate, and Input 3 was river water amended with 500 mg L?1 SO4 and 340 mg L?1 lactate. During the first stage of the experiment (Input 1) the effluent Hg concentration was initially 4 µg L?1 and peaked at 21 µg L?1 and after 21 pore volumes stabilized at 13 µg L?1. During the second stage, at high lactate to SO4 ratios, elevated concentrations of acetic and propionic acids were detected, indicating that fermentative bacteria were dominant. During the third stage, at high SO4 to lactate ratios, a decrease in SO4 and an increase in H2S concentrations were detected in the column effluent indicating that SO4 reduction was occurring. Concentrations of methyl Hg (MeHg) in the effluent were variable over the duration of the experiment. During the first phase, concentrations of MeHg remained <3.3 ng L?1. During the fermentative stage, concentrations of MeHg increased to a maximum value of 32 ng L?1, and during the sulfate-reducing stage to a maximum value of 266 ng L?1. When the column was deconstructed both molecular and cultural techniques indicated that sulfate reducing bacteria were most dominant near the influent port. These results indicate that the formation of MeHg in the sediment is not limited by the availability of Hg and that the bacterial community that contributes to mercury methylation can respond quickly to changes in the abundances of electron donors and acceptors.  相似文献

There has been considerable interest in cultivation of green microalgae (Chlorophyta) as a source of lipid that can alternatively be converted to biodiesel. However, almost all mass cultures of algae are carbon-limited. Therefore, to reach a high biomass and oil productivities, the ideal selected microalgae will most likely need a source of inorganic carbon. Here, growth and lipid productivities of Tetraselmis suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp were tested under various ranges of pH and different sources of inorganic carbon (untreated flue gas from coal-fired power plant, pure industrial CO2, pH-adjusted using HCl and sodium bicarbonate). Biomass and lipid productivities were highest at pH 7.5 (320?±?29.9 mg biomass L?1 day?1and 92?±?13.1 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and pH 7 (407?±?5.5 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 99?±?17.2 mg lipid L?1 day?1) for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. In general, biomass and lipid productivities were pH 7.5?>?pH 7?>?pH 8?>?pH 6.5 and pH 7?>?pH 7.5?=?pH 8?>?pH 6.5?>?pH 6?>?pH 5.5 for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. The effect of various inorganic carbon on growth and productivities of T. suecica (regulated at pH?=?7.5) and Chlorella sp (regulated at pH?=?7) grown in bag photobioreactors was also examined outdoor at the International Power Hazelwood, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The highest biomass and lipid productivities of T. suecica (51.45?±?2.67 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 14.8?±?2.46 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and Chlorella sp (60.00?±?2.4 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 13.70?±?1.35 mg lipid L?1 day?1) were achieved when grown using CO2 as inorganic carbon source. No significant differences were found between CO2 and flue gas biomass and lipid productivities. While grown using CO2 and flue gas, biomass productivities were 10, 13 and 18 %, and 7, 14 and 19 % higher than NaHCO3, HCl and unregulated pH for T. suecica and Chlorella sp, respectively. Addition of inorganic carbon increased specific growth rate and lipid content but reduced biomass yield and cell weight of T. suecica. Addition of inorganic carbon increased yield but did not change specific growth rate, cell weight or content of the cell weight of Chlorella sp. Both strains showed significantly higher maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) when grown under optimum pH.  相似文献

A real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) was used to evaluate biokinetic coefficients of Nitrosomonas nitrosa and N. cryotolerans clusters growing simultaneously in a batch mode of ammonia oxidation. The mathematical models based on Monod equation were employed to describe the competitive relationship between these clusters and were fitted to experimental data to obtain biokinetic values. The maximum growth rates (μ m), half-saturation coefficients (K S), microbial yields (Y) and decay coefficients (k d) of N. nitrosa and N. cryotolerans were 1.77 and 1.21 day?1, 23.25 and 23.06 mg N·L?1, 16 × 108 and 1 × 108 copies·mg N?1, 0.26 and 0.20 day?1, respectively. The estimated coefficients were applied for modeling continuous operations at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs) with an influent ammonia concentration of 300 mg N·L?1. Modeling results revealed that ammonia oxidation efficiencies were achieved 55–98 % at 0.8–10 days HRTs and that the system was predicted to be washed out at HRT of 0.7 days. Overall, use of QPCR for estimating biokinetic coefficients of the two AOB cluster growing simultaneously by use of ammonia were successful. This idea may open a new direction towards biokinetics of ammonia oxidation in which respirometry tests are usually employed.  相似文献

The present study is aimed at assessing the extent of arsenic (As) toxicity under three different light intensities—optimum (400 μmole photon m?2 s?1), sub-optimum (225 μmole photon m?2 s?1), and low (75 μmole photon m?2 s?1)—exposed to Helianthus annuus L. var. DRSF-113 seedlings by examining various physiological and biochemical parameters. Irrespective of the light intensities under which H. annuus L. seedlings were grown, there was an As dose (low, i.e., 6 mg kg?1 soil, As1; and high, i.e., 12 mg kg?1 soil, As2)-dependent decrease in all the growth parameters, viz., fresh mass, shoot length, and root length. Optimum light-grown seedlings exhibited better growth performance than the sub-optimum and low light-grown seedlings; however, low light-grown plants had maximum root and shoot lengths. Accumulation of As in the plant tissues depended upon its concentration used, proximity of the plant tissue, and intensity of the light. Greater intensity of light allowed greater assimilation of photosynthates accompanied by more uptake of nutrients along with As from the medium. The levels of chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids declined with increasing concentrations of As. Seedlings acquired maximum Chl a and b under optimum light which were more compatible to face As1 and As2 doses of As, also evident from the overall status of enzymatic (SOD, POD, CAT, and GST) and non-enzymatic antioxidant (Pro).  相似文献
