Evaluation of Vickers hardness of different types of acrylic denture base resins with and without glass fibre reinforcement Objective: To evaluate the Vickers hardness of different acrylic resins for denture bases with and without the addition of glass fibres. Background: It has been suggested that different polymerisation methods, as well as the addition of glass fibre (FV) might improve the hardness of acrylic. Materials and methods: Five types of acrylic resin were tested: Vipi Wave (VW), microwave polymerisation; Vipi Flash (VF), auto‐polymerisation; Lucitone (LT), QC20 (QC) and Vipi Cril (VC), conventional heat‐polymerisation, all with or without glass fibre reinforcement (GFR) and distributed into 10 groups (n = 12). Specimens were then submitted to Vickers hardness testing with a 25‐g load for 30 s. All data were submitted to anova and Tukey’s HSD test. Results: A significant statistical difference was observed with regard to the polymerisation method and the GFR (p < 0.05). Without the GFR, the acrylic resin VC presented the highest hardness values, and VF and LT presented the lowest. In the presence of GFR, VC resin still presented the highest Vickers hardness values, and VF and QC presented the lowest. Conclusions: The acrylic resin VC and VW presented higher hardness values than VF and QC resins. Moreover, GFR increased the Vickers hardness of resins VW, VC and LT.  相似文献

Effect of the physical properties of acrylic resin of overnight immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution Objectives: This study evaluated colour stability, surface roughness and flexural strength of microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin after overnight immersion in sodium hypochlorite, simulating 180 days use. Materials and methods: Forty disc‐shaped (15 mm × 4 mm) and 40 rectangular specimens (65 mm × 10 mm × 3 mm) were prepared from microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin. The specimens were immersed in 0.5, 1% sodium hypochlorite, Clorox/Calgon and distilled water. Colour measurements (ΔE) were determined by a portable colorimeter. A surface analyser was used to measure roughness (μm). The flexural strength (MPa) was measured using a three‐point bending test in a universal testing machine. Data were evaluated by one‐way anova , followed by Student–Newman–Keuls test (α = 0.05). Results: Statistical analysis found significantly higher colour changes (SNK, p < 0.001) for the 1% sodium hypochlorite, but mean ΔE value quantified by National Bureau of Standards was classified as slight. When comparing the surface roughness, no statistical significance was found among the solutions (anova , p = 0.637). The 1% sodium hypochlorite presented significantly lower flexural strength compared with the control group (SNK, p = 0.034). Conclusion: It was concluded that immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite solutions for 8 h does influence the colour stability and flexural strength of microwave‐polymerised acrylic resin, during the simulated period of 180 days.  相似文献

Background: Ocular prosthesis materials should have specific properties for their indication and durability; therefore, it is important to investigate their physical behaviour when affected by several disinfectants. Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of different disinfecting solutions on the microhardness and surface roughness of acrylic resins for ocular prosthesis. Materials and Methods: Fifty samples simulating ocular prostheses were fabricated with N1 resin and colourless resin and divided (n = 10) according to the disinfectant used: neutral soap, Opti‐free, Efferdent, 1% hypochlorite (HYC) and 4% chlorhexidine (CHX). Samples were stored in saline solution at 37°C and disinfected during 120 days. Both microhardness and roughness were investigated before, after 60 days and 120 days of disinfection and storage. Microhardness was measured using a microhardner and the roughness with a roughness device. Results: N1 resin showed lower microhardness when compared with colourless resin (p < 0.05). HYC and CHX groups exhibited the highest change of microhardness and roughness values (p < 0.05). An increase in roughness and reduction in microhardness of ocular acrylic resins were observed after both periods of disinfection and storage (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both disinfection/storage periods affected the microhardness and roughness values of the samples.  相似文献

Evaluation of the efficacy of chemical disinfectants for disinfection of heat‐polymerised acrylic resin Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of disinfectants on the internal aspect of heat‐polymerised acrylic resin contaminated with microbial strains. Background: Dentures absorb oral fluids and become contaminated by different microorganisms. Methods: Two hundred and fifty rectangular specimens were made of heat‐polymerised acrylic resin, and then divided into five groups corresponding to the microbial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, S. mutans and Enterococcus faecalis). After contamination, the specimens were immersed in 1 and 2% sodium hypochlorite and 2% glutaraldehyde for periods of 5, 10 and 15 min. The specimens were placed into tubes containing different broths and incubated at 35°C and then visually analysed. Turbidity in the medium indicated microbial growth. The Fisher’s exact test was used in the analysis of the results. Results: The strain E. faecalis was the most resistant to the disinfectant solutions, and among them, glutaraldehyde was more effective than 2 and 1% hypochlorite for disinfection for 5 min; in the 10‐min period there were no differences between the disinfectants. In 15 min of immersion, 1% hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde were more effective than 2% hypochlorite. Conclusions: Disinfection for 10 min with 1% hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde is effective in disinfecting the internal aspect of heat‐polymerised acrylic resin.  相似文献

Material and methods: Samples were prepared according to conventional, microwaved and boiled resins and submitted to microroughness measurements before and after procedures using a profilometer (Ra). Data were subjected to anova and Tukey’s test (5%). Results: Before thermocycling, a difference was found among treatments for microwaved and boiled resins, with greater values for toothbrushing and lower values for Efferdent and hypochlorite; control was intermediate. Differences among resins were observed for treatments, with higher values for boiled resin and lower values for conventional and microwaved resins. After thermocycling, differences were found for microwaved resin, with a higher value for toothbrushing and a lower value for Efferdent and hypochlorite; control was intermediate. Tooth‐brushed boiled resin presented higher values and hypochlorite lower values; control and Efferdent were intermediates. Differences among resins were seen for treatments, with higher values for boiled resin and lower values for conventional and microwaved resins. Boiled resin presented differences for toothbrushing and hypochlorite, before and after thermocycling procedures were compared. Conclusions: For microwaved and boiled resins, toothbrushing and chemical disinfection promoted different levels of surface microroughness when associated or not with thermocycling.  相似文献

Aims:  To evaluate the efficacy of sanitizing green coconuts ( Cocos nucifera L.) through the treatment applied by juice industries using sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid.
Methods and Results:  The surface of the fruits was inoculated with a mixture of five Listeria monocytogenes strains. The treatments consisted in immersing the fruits for 2 min at room temperature in sodium hypochlorite solution containing 200 mg l−1 residual chlorine at pH 6·5, and 80 mg l−1 solution of peracetic acid or sterile water. Bacterial populations were quantified by culturing on trypticase soy agar supplemented with yeast extract and Oxford selective culture medium; however, recovery was higher on the nonselective medium. Immersion in water produced a reduction in the L. monocytogenes population of 1·7 log10 CFU per fruit, while immersion in sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid solutions resulted in population reductions of 2·7 and 4·7  log10 CFU per fruit respectively.
Conclusions:  The treatments studied are efficient to green coconuts.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Sanitation of green coconut is one of the most important control measures to prevent the contamination of coconut water. This article provides information that shows the adequacy of sanitizing treatments applied by the juice industries.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00520.x The effect of long‐term disinfection procedures on hardness property of resin denture teeth Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of long‐term disinfection procedures on the Vickers hardness (VHN) of acrylic resin denture teeth. Material and methods: Five acrylic resin denture teeth (Vipi Dent Plus‐V, Trilux–T, Biolux‐B, Postaris‐P and Artiplus‐A) and one composite resin denture teeth (SR‐Orthosit‐O) were embedded in heat‐polymerised acrylic resin within polyvinylchloride tubes. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48 h. Measurements of hardness were taken after the following disinfection procedures: immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or in 1% sodium hypochlorite (CIm and HIm group, respectively) and seven daily cycles of microwave sterilisation at 650 W for 6 min (MwS group). In the WIm group, specimens were maintained in water during the time used to perform the disinfection procedures (7 days). Data were analysed with anova followed by the Bonferroni procedure (α = 0.01). Results: Microwave disinfection decreased the hardness of all acrylic resin denture teeth (p < 0.001). Immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or distilled water had significant effect on the hardness of the acrylic resin denture teeth A (p < 0.01), and 1% sodium hypochlorite on teeth T (p < 0.01). All disinfection procedures decrease the hardness of the composite resin denture teeth (p < 0.01). Teeth O exhibited the highest and teeth V the lowest hardness values in the control group (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Disinfection procedures changed the hardness of resin denture teeth.  相似文献

The detection of a possible genotoxic effect of surface water treated with disinfectants for potabilization is the aim of the present work. The Comet assay and the micronucleus test were applied in circulating erythrocytes of Cyprinus carpio. Young specimens (20-30 g) were exposed in experimental basins, built within the potabilization plant of Castiglione del Lago (Perugia, Italy). In this plant the water of the Trasimeno Lake is treated and disinfected for potabilization before it is distributed to the people in the net of drinkable water. A continuous flow of water at a constant rate was supplied to basins; the water was continuously treated at a constant concentration with one of the three tested disinfectants (sodium hypochlorite, peracetic acid and chloride dioxide), one control basin being supplied with untreated water. Three sampling campaigns were performed: October 2000, February 2001 and June 2001. Repeated blood samplings through intracardiac punctures allowed to follow the same fish populations after different exposure times: before introduction of the disinfectant, and 10 or 20 days afterwards. An additional blood sampling was performed 3 h after addition of the disinfectant in other, simultaneously exposed, fish populations. Genotoxic damage was shown in fish exposed to water disinfected with sodium hypochlorite and chloride dioxide. The Comet assay showed an immediate response, i.e. DNA damage that was induced directly in circulating erythrocytes, whereas micronuclei reached their highest frequencies at later sampling times, when a genotoxic damage in stem cells of the cephalic kidney is expressed in circulating erythrocytes. The quality of the untreated surface water seems to be the most important parameter for the long-term DNA damage in circulating erythrocytes.  相似文献

Effect of repeated cycles of chemical disinfection on the roughness and hardness of hard reline acrylic resins Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of repeated cycles of five chemical disinfectant solutions on the roughness and hardness of three hard chairside reliners. Methods: A total of 180 circular specimens (30 mm × 6 mm) were fabricated using three hard chairside reliners (Jet; n = 60, Kooliner; n = 60, Tokuyama Rebase II Fast; n = 60), which were immersed in deionised water (control), and five disinfectant solutions (1%, 2%, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite; 2% glutaraldehyde; 4% chlorhexidine gluconate). They were tested for Knoop hardness (KHN) and surface roughness (μm), before and after 30 simulated disinfecting cycles. Data was analysed by the factorial scheme (6 × 2), two‐way analysis of variance (anova ), followed by Tukey’s test. Results: For Jet (from 18.74 to 13.86 KHN), Kooliner (from 14.09 to 8.72 KHN), Tokuyama (from 12.57 to 8.28 KHN) a significant decrease in hardness was observed irrespective of the solution used on all materials. For Jet (from 0.09 to 0.11 μm) there was a statistically significant increase in roughness. Kooliner (from 0.36 to 0.26 μm) presented a statistically significant decrease in roughness and Tokuyama (from 0.15 to 0.11 μm) presented no statistically significant difference after 30 days. Conclusions: This study showed that all disinfectant solutions promoted a statistically significant decrease in hardness, whereas with roughness, the materials tested showed a statistically significant increase, except for Tokuyama. Although statistically significant values were registered, these results could not be considered clinically significant.  相似文献

Methods: A total of 260 samples were manufactured with N1 resin and colourless resin. Both resins were thermopolymerised using a microwave oven. Samples were stored and periodically disinfected and were divided into groups: control (no disinfection) (I), neutral soap (II), Opti‐free (III), Efferdent (IV), 1% hypochlorite (V) or 4% chlorhexidine (VI). The flexural strength was measured before and after 60 and 120 days of storage. Data were analysed by anova and Tukey test (0.05). Results: The flexural strength of the N1 resin was higher than that for the colourless resin. There was a significant difference in the flexural strength before and after 60 and 120 days of storage with disinfection, regardless of the resin and disinfectant. Group I in the initial period exhibited greater flexural strength, with significant difference only in group VI after 120 days. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the flexural strength only changed after 120 days of storage for samples disinfected with chlorhexidine. However, all flexural strength values obtained herein were acceptable clinical limits for the acrylic resins.  相似文献

Materials and methods: Pink acetal and thermoplastic acrylic resins were evaluated. Thirty‐five specimens 39 × 39 × 1.8 mm of each resin were prepared. Each group of specimens (n = 7) was then immersed into cleansers for 100 days. Group I immersed in tap water, Group II in Corega Extradent for 5 min, Group III in Corega Extradent for 8 h, Group IV in NitrAdine? Seniors for 15 min and Group V in NaOCl 5.25%. Gloss, colour and weight measurements were taken initially and after 100 days. Data subjected to two‐way anova and Tukey’s test at α = 0.05. Results: Acrylic resin showed reductions of glossiness from ?5 to ?15 and acetal from ?0.2 to ?6. Colour changes (ΔΕ*) ranged from 2.64 to 7.64 for acrylic and 2.77 to 26.54 for acetal resin. Sorption for acrylic ranged from 11.64 to 17.06 μg/mm3 and 9.18 to 24.79 μg/mm3 for acetal resin. The results of (ΔΕ*) and sorption showed an interaction between denture resins and cleansers. Conclusions: The gloss of acetal resin was less affected by water, peroxides and NaOCl 5.25% compared with acrylic resin. Acetal resin showed clinically acceptable (ΔΕ*) whereas acrylic resin unacceptable ones for water and peroxide solutions. The immersion of acetal resin in NaOCl 5.25% showed clinically unacceptable (ΔΕ*) and higher sorption and should be avoided or should be managed with care.  相似文献

Summary The activity of eleven disinfectants againstStaphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andSaccharomyces cerevisiae was determined using a method based on the A.O.A.C. germicidal and detergent sanitizer assay. Based on the activity against the test organisms after 30-and 60-s exposures to each disinfectant, the disinfectant containing chlorine dioxide had the highest biocidal activity in this assay, on a mg/l basis. In addition, a disinfectant containing sodium hypochlorite and a disinfectant containing sodium chlorite performed well, at concentrations below label specifications. The results illustrate the importance of testing disinfectants in the context of their intended use.  相似文献

The relative stability of spores of Bacillus cereus grown at three different temperatures was examined by using quasi-elastic light scattering (q.l.s.) in conjunction with turbidity and scanning electron microscopy (s.e.m.). Cultures grown at 20, 30 and 40 degrees C (BC20, BC30 and BC40 respectively) were compared in terms of (i) their effective hydrodynamic radius, rH, as determined from q.l.s. and (ii) their gross morphology, as determined from s.e.m. The effects of autoclaving at 121.1 degrees C on both these properties was also examined. We observed (1) that cultures BC20 and BC30 appeared to have similar values for rH, whereas that of BC40 appeared some 50% higher, and (2) BC40 had a correspondingly much lower heat resistance (its structural integrity was lost after about 20 min autoclaving, whereas that of BC20 and BC30 was retained even after 80 min autoclaving). These data were in good agreement with independent measurements of heat-resistance coefficients. Changes in the hydrodynamic radius, polydispersity (both using q.l.s.) and turbidity were monitored with time on addition of the disinfectants sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid; again BC40 appeared to have a lower resistance.  相似文献

The inactivation of Tyzzer's organism (Bacillus piliformis) spore isolated from rats by heat and various chemical disinfectants was studied. The spores were from B. piliformis-infected rat liver tissues. The spore suspension (10(4) 50% of rat liver lesion producing dose with prednisolone treatment/ml) was treated with heart or disinfectants. Inactivation of the spores was examined in experimentally infected rats. Rats were inoculated perorally with a treated spore suspension and injected subcutaneously with prednisolone. On the sixth day after inoculation, rats were examined grossly for liver lesions. Spores were inactivated at 80 degrees C for 15 min but not at 60 degrees C for 30 min. Spores were inactivated by 0.4% peracetic acid, 0.015% sodium hypochrolite, 1% iodophol, 5% phenol. Alcide and 0.37% formaldehyde solution, but not by 0.037% formaldehyde solution, 70% ethanol, 0.3% benzethonium chloride solution, 3% cresol and soap solution, or 4% chlorhexidine digluconate. These findings suggest that B. piliformis spores are relatively sensitive to heat and certain chemical disinfectants.  相似文献

Weight loss and changes in surface roughness of denture base and reline materials after simulated toothbrushing in vitro Objective: To evaluate the weight loss and the surface roughness of acrylic resins after simulated brushing tests. Material and methods: Ten specimens of each material (Tokuyama Rebase II‐TR, New Truliner‐NT, Ufi Gel Hard‐UH and Lucitone 550‐L) were made. The wear loss (mg) by weight and the surface roughness (Ra μm) of each specimen was determined before and after brushing. The specimens were placed on the brushing machine and a total of 20 000 brushing cycles was performed. The results of weight loss and roughness values were submitted to the anova followed by the Tukey’s test (p = 0.05). Results: The mean weight loss of material L was statistically higher (p < 0.001) than that of the relines TR, UH and NT. No significant differences were found among the roughness values of resins TR, UH and L (p > 0.05). Only for L, toothbrushing increased the surface roughness. After toothbrushing, there was no significant difference between the roughness values of materials L and NT. The highest mean weight loss during the simulated toothbrushing tests was observed for L. Before the toothbrushing tests, the NT exhibited the highest mean roughness. Conclusion: Brushing resulted in increase in roughness only for resin L.  相似文献

Background: The fracture between acrylic denture base material and artificial teeth is a common clinical occurrence in dental prosthodontic practice. Objective: To evaluate the bond strength between acrylic resins and resin denture teeth when submitted by two protocols of monomer liquid application on the tooth surface and using different polymerisation methods. Material and methods: Microwave‐polymerised (Onda‐Cryl), heat‐polymerised (Clássico) and autopolymerising (Jet) acrylic resins and a brand of resin denture teeth (Biotone) were used. The acrylic resins were polymerised according to the cycles: (A) microwave – fast cycle, Onda‐Cryl; (B) microwave – long cycle, Onda‐Cryl; (C) microwave – manufacturer’s cycle, Onda‐Cryl; (T) water bath – long cycle, Clássico and (Q) bench polymerisation cycle, Jet. Thirty specimens were prepared for each polymerisation method; 10 were packed with acrylic resin after 60 s of monomer liquid application on the tooth surface, 10 after 180 s and 10 without any monomer liquid application. For the purpose of the study, a shear test was used. anova and Tukey tests were performed to identify significant differences (α = 0.05). Results: The highest bond strength values were found for monomer surface treatments, regardless of the polymerisation cycles. The highest significant values were found for cycles B (15.4 ± 1.8 MPa), C (11.9 ± 4.9 MPa) and T (15.4 ± 2.6 MPa) for non‐treated and 60 s methylmethacrylate treated groups. Comparing the monomer liquid treatment, they did not differ significantly (p > 0.05), except for cycle A (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Chemical treatment using monomer on the tooth surface prior to the acrylic resin packing improved the bond strength between resin denture tooth and acrylic resin, regardless of monomer liquid treatment protocols. The microwavable resin, polymerised by fast cycle and autopolymerising resin should be avoided for processing denture and denture repairs, respectively.  相似文献

Human noroviruses (NoVs) are a major cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Public and personal hygiene is one of the most important countermeasures for preventing spread of NoV infection. However, no a practicable cell culture system for NoV had been developed, initial tests of the virucidal effectiveness of anti‐NoV disinfectants and sanitizers have been performed using surrogate viruses. In this study, NoV virus‐like particles (VLPs) were used as a new surrogate for NoVs and a method for evaluating NoV inactivation using them developed. This method is based on morphological changes in VLPs after treatment with sodium hypochlorite. VLP specimens were found to become deformed and degraded in a concentration‐dependent manner. Based on these results, the effects of sodium hypochlorite on VLPs were classified into four phases according to morphological changes and number of particles. Using the criteria thus established, the efficacy of ethanol, carbonates and alkali solutions against VLPs was evaluated. Deformation and aggregation of VLPs were observed after treatment with these disinfectants under specific conditions. To determine the degradation mechanism(s), VLPs were examined by SDS‐PAGE and immunoblotting after treatment with sodium hypochlorite and ethanol. The band corresponding to the major capsid protein, VP1, was not detected after treatment with sodium hypochlorite at concentrations greater than 500 ppm, but remained after treatment with ethanol. These results suggest that VLPs have excellent potential as a surrogate marker for NoVs and can be used in initial virucidal effectiveness tests to determine the mechanism(s) of chemical agents on NoVs.  相似文献

The effect of immersion solutions containing enterocin AS-48 alone or in combination with chemical preservatives on survival and proliferation of Listeria monocytogenes CECT 4032 inoculated on fresh alfalfa sprouts, soybean sprouts, and green asparagus was tested. Immersion treatments (5 min at room temperature) with AS-48 solutions (25 microg/ml) reduced listeria counts of artificially contaminated alfalfa and soybean sprouts by approximately 2.0 to 2.4 log CFU/g compared to a control immersion treatment in distilled water. The same bacteriocin immersion treatment applied on green asparagus had a very limited effect. During storage of vegetable samples treated with immersion solutions of 12.5 and 25 microg of AS-48/ml, viable listeria counts were reduced below detection limits at days 1 to 7 for alfalfa and soybean sprouts at 6 and 15 degrees C, as well as green asparagus at 15 degrees C. Only a limited inhibition of listeria proliferation was detected during storage of bacteriocin-treated alfalfa sprouts and green asparagus at 22 degrees C. Treatment with solutions containing AS-48 plus lactic acid, sodium lactate, sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, trisodium phosphate, trisodium trimetaphosphate, sodium thiosulphate, n-propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, p-hydoxybenzoic acid methyl ester, hexadecylpyridinium chloride, peracetic acid, or sodium hypochlorite reduced viable counts of listeria below detection limits (by approximately 2.6 to 2.7 log CFU/g) upon application of the immersion treatment and/or further storage for 24 h, depending of the chemical preservative concentration. Significant increases of antimicrobial activity were also detected for AS-48 plus potassium permanganate and in some combinations with acetic acid, citric acid, sodium propionate, and potassium sorbate.  相似文献
