Herbivorous insects are commonly faced with host plants being distributed in scattered patches across a landscape. Immigration rates into habitat patches may strongly depend on the sensory cues used in the patch location process, and immigration rates of insects can be predicted based on the scaling of sensory cues. Here, we tested recent estimates of the scaling of olfactory information to patch size, which predicts a scaling coefficient ζ ≈ ?0.5 (A ζ , where A = patch size, ζ = scaling coefficient). We predicted that immigration rates of olfactory searching insects into patches of different sizes should scale according to the estimated slope. We investigated attraction of the weevils Cionus tuberculosus and Cionus scrophulariae to odors from figwort Scrophularia nodosa and quantified immigration rates of weevils into differently sized patches. We also investigated oviposition rates of the sawfly Tenthredo scrophulariae. The slope in the regression between density and patch size for herbivores was then compared with the predicted scaling coefficient. Using olfactometers, we found that weevils were attracted to figwort odors. Weevil densities were significantly affected by patch size, and the slope in the relationship between density and patch size was ζ = ?0.53. The slope in the relationship between larval densities of sawflies and patch size was less negative with a slope of ζ = ?0.15, indicating differences in search behavior compared with the weevils. The density–patch size relationship for the weevils closely matched the predicted slope and supported the previous estimations of the scaling of olfactory information to patch size.  相似文献

1. Olfactory predator search processes differ fundamentally to those based on vision, particularly when odour cues are deposited rather than airborne or emanating from a point source. When searching for visually cryptic prey that may have moved some distance from a deposited odour cue, cue context and spatial variability are the most likely sources of information about prey location available to an olfactory predator. 2. We tested whether the house mouse (Mus domesticus), a model olfactory predator, would use cue context and spatial variability when searching for buried food items; specifically, we tested the effect of varying cue patchiness, odour strength, and cue-prey association on mouse foraging success. 3. Within mouse- and predator-proof enclosures, we created grids of 100 sand-filled Petri dishes and buried peanut pieces in a set number of these patches to represent visually cryptic 'prey'. By adding peanut oil to selected dishes, we varied the spatial distribution of prey odour relative to the distribution of prey patches in each grid, to reflect different levels of cue patchiness (Experiment 1), odour strength (Experiment 2) and cue-prey association (Experiment 3). We measured the overnight foraging success of individual mice (percentage of searched patches containing prey), as well as their foraging activity (percentage of patches searched), and prey survival (percentage of unsearched prey patches). 4. Mouse foraging success was highest where odour cues were patchy rather than uniform (Experiment 1), and where cues were tightly associated with prey location, rather than randomly or uniformly distributed (Experiment 3). However, when cues at prey patches were ten times stronger than a uniformly distributed weak background odour, mice did not improve their foraging success over that experienced when cues were of uniform strength and distribution (Experiment 2). 5. These results suggest that spatial variability and cue context are important means by which olfactory predators can use deposited odour cues to locate visually cryptic prey. They also indicate that chemical crypsis can disrupt these search processes as effectively as background matching in visually based predator-prey systems.

Habitat area is an important predictor of spatial variation in animal densities. However, the area often correlates with the quantity of resources within habitats, complicating our understanding of the factors shaping animal distributions. We addressed this problem by investigating densities of insect herbivores in habitat patches with a constant area but varying numbers of plants. Using a mathematical model, predictions of scale-dependent immigration and emigration rates for insects into patches with different densities of host plants were derived. Moreover, a field experiment was conducted where the scaling properties of odour-mediated attraction in relation to the number of odour sources were estimated, in order to derive a prediction of immigration rates of olfactory searchers. The theoretical model predicted that we should expect immigration rates of contact and visual searchers to be determined by patch area, with a steep scaling coefficient, μ = ?1. The field experiment suggested that olfactory searchers should show a less steep scaling coefficient, with μ ≈ ?0.5. A parameter estimation and analysis of published data revealed a correspondence between observations and predictions, and density-variation among groups could largely be explained by search behaviour. Aphids showed scaling coefficients corresponding to the prediction for contact/visual searchers, whereas moths, flies and beetles corresponded to the prediction for olfactory searchers. As density responses varied considerably among groups, and variation could be explained by a certain trait, we conclude that a general theory of insect responses to habitat heterogeneity should be based on shared traits, rather than a general prediction for all species.  相似文献

Insect olfactory orientation along odour plumes has been studied intensively with respect to pheromonal communication, whereas little knowledge is available on how plant odour plumes (POPs) affect olfactory searching by an insect for its host plants. The primary objective of this review is to examine the role of POPs in the attraction of insects. First, we consider parameters of an odour source and the environment which determine the size, shape and structure of an odour plume, and we apply that knowledge to POPs. Second, we compare characteristics of insect pheromonal plumes and POPs. We propose a ‘POP concept’ for the olfactory orientation of insects to plants. We suggest that: (i) an insect recognises a POP by means of plant volatile components that are encountered in concentrations higher than a threshold detection limit and that occur in a qualitative and quantitative blend indicating a resource; (ii) perception of the fine structure of a POP enables an insect to distinguish a POP from an unspecific odorous background and other interfering plumes; and (iii) an insect can follow several POPs to their sources, and may leave the track of one POP and switch to another one if this conveys a signal with higher reliability or indicates a more suitable resource. The POP concept proposed here may be a useful tool for research in olfactory‐mediated plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

Floral to green: mating switches moth olfactory coding and preference   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mating induces profound physiological changes in a wide range of insects, leading to behavioural adjustments to match the internal state of the animal. Here, we show for the first time, to our knowledge, that a noctuid moth switches its olfactory response from food to egg-laying cues following mating. Unmated females of the cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) are strongly attracted to lilac flowers (Syringa vulgaris). After mating, attraction to floral odour is abolished and the females fly instead to green-leaf odour of the larval host plant cotton, Gossypium hirsutum. This behavioural switch is owing to a marked change in the olfactory representation of floral and green odours in the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL). Calcium imaging, using authentic and synthetic odours, shows that the ensemble of AL glomeruli dedicated to either lilac or cotton odour is selectively up- and downregulated in response to mating. A clear-cut behavioural modulation as a function of mating is a useful substrate for studies of the neural mechanisms underlying behavioural decisions. Modulation of odour-driven behaviour through concerted regulation of odour maps contributes to our understanding of state-dependent choice and host shifts in insect herbivores.  相似文献

Olfactory cues are important sensory modalities on individual discrimination, perception, and efficient orientation to food sources in most insects. In honey bees, which are well known as eusocial insects, olfactory cues are mainly used to maintain a colony. Although much research has been reported on olfactory systems in honey bee olfaction, little is known about the differences between two major honey bee species, the European honey bee Apis mellifera and the Asian honey bee Apis cerana. In order to understand the differences of olfactory characteristics in the two species, we compared the distribution of sensory hairs on the antennae and antennal olfactory responses, using electron microscopy, electrophysiological recording and molecular expression level of odorant receptors. Our present study demonstrated that the antennae of A. cerana have more olfactory sensilla than A. mellifera, responding more strongly to various floral volatile compounds. At the molecular level, olfactory co-receptor (Orco), which makes heterodimers with other conventional olfactory receptors, is more abundantly expressed in the antenna of A. cerana than of A. mellifera. These findings extend our understanding of the olfactory systems and behavioral responses to various ecological and biological signals in two closely related honey bee species.  相似文献

Olfaction is a common sensory mode of communication in much of the Vertebrata, although its use by adult frogs remains poorly studied. Being part of an open signalling system, odour cues can be exploited by 'eavesdropping' predators that hunt by smell, making association with odour a high-risk behaviour for prey. Here, we show that adult great barred frogs (Mixophes fasciolatus) are highly attracted to odour cues of conspecifics and those of sympatric striped marsh frogs (Limnodynastes peronii). This attraction decreased significantly with the addition of odours of a scent-hunting predator, the red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus), indicating that frogs perceived predation risks from associating with frog odours. Male frogs, however, maintained some attraction to unfamiliar conspecific scents even with predator odours present, suggesting that they perceived benefits of odour communication despite the risk. Our results indicate that adult frogs can identify species and individuals from their odours and assess the associated predation risk, revealing a complexity in olfactory communication previously unknown in adult anurans.  相似文献

Plant diversity is known to affect success of host location by pest insects, but its effect on olfactory orientation of non-pest insect species has hardly been addressed. First, we tested in laboratory experiments the hypothesis that non-host plants, which increase odour complexity in habitats, affect the host location ability of herbivores and parasitoids. Furthermore, we recorded field data of plant diversity in addition to herbivore and parasitoid abundance at 77 grassland sites in three different regions in Germany in order to elucidate whether our laboratory results reflect the field situation. As a model system we used the herb Plantago lanceolata, the herbivorous weevil Mecinus pascuorum, and its larval parasitoid Mesopolobus incultus. The laboratory bioassays revealed that both the herbivorous weevil and its larval parasitoid can locate their host plant and host via olfactory cues even in the presence of non-host odour. In a newly established two-circle olfactometer, the weeviĺs capability to detect host plant odour was not affected by odours from non-host plants. However, addition of non-host plant odours to host plant odour enhanced the weeviĺs foraging activity. The parasitoid was attracted by a combination of host plant and host volatiles in both the absence and presence of non-host plant volatiles in a Y-tube olfactometer. In dual choice tests the parasitoid preferred the blend of host plant and host volatiles over its combination with non-host plant volatiles. In the field, no indication was found that high plant diversity disturbs host (plant) location by the weevil and its parasitoid. In contrast, plant diversity was positively correlated with weevil abundance, whereas parasitoid abundance was independent of plant diversity. Therefore, we conclude that weevils and parasitoids showed the sensory capacity to successfully cope with complex vegetation odours when searching for hosts.  相似文献

Experimental data on the relationship between plant patch size and population density of herbivores within fields often deviates from predictions of the theory of island biogeography and the resource concentration hypothesis. Here we argue that basic features of foraging behaviour can explain different responses of specialist herbivores to habitat heterogeneity. In a combination of field and simulation studies, we applied basic knowledge on the foraging strategies of three specialist herbivores: the cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae), the cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae L.) and the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.), to explain differences in their responses to small scale fragmentation of their habitat. In our field study, populations of the three species responded to different sizes of host plant patches (9 plants and 100 plants) in different ways. Densities of winged cabbage aphids were independent of patch size. Egg‐densities of the cabbage butterfly were higher in small than in large patches. Densities of diamondback moth adults were higher in large patches than in small patches. When patches in a background of barley were compared with those in grass, densities of the cabbage aphid and the diamondback moth were reduced, but not cabbage butterfly densities. To explore the role of foraging behaviour of herbivores on their response to patch size, a spatially explicit individual‐based simulation framework was used. The sensory abilities of the insects to detect and respond to contact, olfactory or visual cues were varied. Species with a post‐alighting host recognition behaviour (cabbage aphid) could only use contact cues from host plants encountered after landing. In contrast, species capable with a pre‐alighting recognition behaviour, based on visual (cabbage butterfly) or olfactory (diamondback moth) cues, were able to recognise a preferred host plant whilst in flight. These three searching modalities were studied by varying the in flight detection abilities, the displacement speed and the arrestment response to host plants by individuals. Simulated patch size – density relationships were similar to those observed in the field. The importance of pre‐ and post‐ alighting detection in the responses of herbivores to spatial heterogeneity of the habitat is discussed.  相似文献

Guppies are highly sexually dimorphic and females have been shown to mate preferentially with males with various visible traits. Guppies, however, have been shown to respond behaviourally to odour cues from conspecifics. Using a specially designed olfactory choice tank, we tested whether females (1) could detect other guppies on the basis of their olfactory cues alone, (2) preferred to associate with males or with females and (3) could distinguish between different males. Female guppies were found to associate preferentially with other guppies when given a choice between water containing cues from another fish and water containing no cues. When females were presented with olfactory cues from a male or a female, they preferred the female initially but most then reversed their decision and swam to the male. Females associated preferentially with certain males based upon olfactory cues alone. Males, however, preferred on the basis of olfactory cues were the least preferred for visual cues.  相似文献

Volatile plant secondary metabolites are detected by the highly sensitive olfactory system employed by insects to locate suitable plants as hosts and to avoid unsuitable hosts. Perception of these compounds depends on olfactory receptor neurones (ORNs) in sensillae, mostly on the insect antennae, which can recognise individual molecular structures. Perception of blends of plant volatiles plays a pivotal role in host recognition, non-host avoidance and ensuing behavioural responses as different responses can occur to a whole blend compared to individual components. There are emergent properties of blend perception because components of the host blend may not be recognised as host when perceived outside the context of that blend. Often there is redundancy in the composition of blends recognised as host because certain compounds can be substituted by others. Fine spatio-temporal resolution of the synchronous firing of ORNs tuned to specific compounds enables insects to pick out relevant host odour cues against high background noise and with ephemeral exposure to the volatiles at varying concentrations. This task is challenging as they usually rely on ubiquitous plant volatiles and not those taxonomically characteristic of host plants. However, such an odour coding system has the advantage of providing flexibility; it allows for adaptation to changing environments by alterations in signal processing while maintaining the same peripheral olfactory receptors.  相似文献

Food quality is an important consideration in the foraging strategy of all animals, including herbivores. Those that can detect and assess the nutritional value of plants from afar, using senses such as smell and sight, can forage more efficiently than those that must assess food quality by taste alone. Selective foraging not only affects herbivore fitness but can influence the structure and composition of plant communities, yet little is known about how olfactory and visual cues help herbivores to find preferred plants. We tested the ability of a free‐ranging, generalist mammalian browser, the swamp wallaby Wallabia bicolor, to use olfactory and visual plant cues to find and/or browse differentially on Eucalyptus pilularis seedlings grown under different nutrient conditions. Low‐nutrient seedlings differed from high‐nutrient seedlings, having lighter coloured leaves, red stems and lower biomass and nitrogen content. In the absence of visual cues, wallabies used odour to differentiate vials containing cut seedlings. They visited and investigated patches with high‐nutrient seedling odour most, followed by patches with low‐nutrient seedling odour, and patches with no added odour least. However, when visual and olfactory cues of seedlings were present, wallabies reversed their foraging response and were more likely to browse low‐ than high‐nutrient seedlings. This browsing difference, in turn, disappeared when long‐range visual cues were reduced by pinning seedlings horizontal to the ground. We suggest that visual cues overrode the effects of olfactory cues on browsing patterns of intact seedlings. Our study shows that herbivores can respond to odours of higher nutrient plants but in ecologically realistic scenarios they use a variety of visual and olfactory cues, with a context‐dependent outcome that is not always selection of high nutrient food. Our results demonstrate the importance of testing the sensory abilities of herbivores in realistic multi‐sensory settings to understand their function in selective foraging.  相似文献

The olfactory system of insects is essential for the search of food and mates, and weak signals can be detected, amplified and discriminated in a fluctuating environment. The olfactory system also allows for learning and recall of odour memories. Based on anatomical, physiological, and behavioural data from the olfactory system of insects, we have developed a cross-scale dynamical neural network model to simulate the presentation, amplification and discrimination of host plant odours and sex pheromones. In particular, we model how the spatial and temporal patterns of the odour information emerging in the glomeruli of the antennal lobe (AL) rely on the glomerular morphology, the connectivity and the complex dynamics of the AL circuits. We study how weak signals can be amplified, how different odours can be discriminated, based on stochastic (resonance) dynamics and the connectivity of the network. We further investigate the spatial and temporal coding of sex pheromone components and plant volatile compounds, in relation to the glomerular structure, arborizing patterns of the projection neurons (PNs) and timing patterns of the neuronal spiking activity.  相似文献

Navigating toward (or away from) a remote odor source is a challenging problem that requires integrating olfactory information with visual and mechanosensory cues. Drosophila melanogaster is a useful organism for studying the neural mechanisms of these navigation behaviors. There are a wealth of genetic tools in this organism, as well as a history of inventive behavioral experiments. There is also a large and growing literature in Drosophila on the neural coding of olfactory, visual, and mechanosensory stimuli. Here we review recent progress in understanding how these stimulus modalities are encoded in the Drosophila nervous system. We also discuss what strategies a fly might use to navigate in a natural olfactory landscape while making use of all these sources of sensory information. We emphasize that Drosophila are likely to switch between multiple strategies for olfactory navigation, depending on the availability of various sensory cues. Finally, we highlight future research directions that will be important in understanding the neural circuits that underlie these behaviors.  相似文献

Insects can learn, allowing them great flexibility for locating seasonal food sources and avoiding wily predators. Because insects are relatively simple and accessible to manipulation, they provide good experimental preparations for exploring mechanisms underlying sensory coding and memory. Here we review how the intertwining of memory with computation enables the coding, decoding, and storage of sensory experience at various stages of the insect olfactory system. Individual parts of this system are capable of multiplexing memories at different timescales, and conversely, memory on a given timescale can be distributed across different parts of the circuit. Our sampling of the olfactory system emphasizes the diversity of memories, and the importance of understanding these memories in the context of computations performed by different parts of a sensory system.  相似文献

Our goal was to test two potential sensory roles for the oral veil in the nudibranch Tritonia diomedea (now synonymous with T. tetraquetra). First, we hypothesized this cephalic sensory organ could detect substrate-associated odours left behind by an odour plume flowing across sediment. In two experiments in a laboratory flow tank, however, T. diomedea did not show consistent crawling headings in response to either prey or predator odours associated with sediment substrate. In one of the experiments, the slugs did significantly decrease crawling speed in response to prey odours. Although slugs could thus detect at least some substrate-associated odours, these results suggest such cues are not used for navigation. We next considered the oral veil’s potential role in behaviours requiring responses to nearby cues. Our observations of animals before and after denervation of the oral veil suggest that, unsurprisingly, predatory bite-strikes do rely on sensory input from the oral veil. Overall, these data, combined with the results of earlier studies, are consistent with the oral veil detecting cues primarily from nearby stimuli (including both chemical and mechanical modalities), while having little or no role in detecting and responding to odour cues originating from distant sources used for navigation behaviour.  相似文献

Sensory signals between individuals are important in short‐range mate finding. The purpose of our experiments was to verify the roles of different sensory cues in mate orientation and discrimination in Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) adults. Sex discrimination and sensory deprivation tests (i.e., depriving the olfactory and/or visual senses of either or both sexes by coating with paint) were conducted in the laboratory. Male O. communa were able to locate and recognize conspecifics using olfactory cues prior to physical contact, but could not discriminate the opposite sex prior to physical contact. When the olfaction of male O. communa was deprived by painting antennae, males spent significantly longer times seeking mates in the arena. Copulation duration did not differ significantly among treatments. Thus, the mating process of O. communa adults was mediated by contact cues, but not by olfactory cues. The percentages of successful mating, searching duration, and copulation duration were all unaffected by visual deprivation, i.e., when the eyes of either or both sexes were covered by black paint. The function of visual cues was thus negligible in the mate‐finding process of O. communa adults. Overall, these results suggested that orientation and discrimination of the opposite sex by O. communa is dependent on the synergy between olfactory and tactile cues.  相似文献

Distinguishing kin from non-kin profoundly impacts the evolution of social behaviour. Individuals able to assess the genetic relatedness of conspecifics can preferentially allocate resources towards related individuals and avoid inbreeding. We have addressed the question of how animals acquire the ability to recognize kin by studying the development of olfactory kin preference in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Previously, we showed that zebrafish use an olfactory template to recognize even unfamiliar kin through phenotype matching. Here, we show for the first time that this phenotype matching is based on a learned olfactory imprinting process in which exposure to kin individuals on day 6 post fertilization (pf) is necessary and sufficient for imprinting. Larvae that were exposed to kin before or after but not on day 6 pf did not recognize kin. Larvae isolated from all contact with conspecifics did not imprint on their own chemical cues; therefore, we see no evidence for kin recognition through self-matching in this species. Surprisingly, exposure to non-kin odour during the sensitive phase of development did not result in imprinting on the odour cues of unrelated individuals, suggesting a genetic predisposition to kin odour. Urine-born peptides expressed by genes of the immune system (MHC) are important messengers carrying information about 'self' and 'other'. We suggest that phenotype matching is acquired through a time-sensitive learning process that, in zebrafish, includes a genetic predisposition potentially involving MHC genes expressed in the olfactory receptor neurons.  相似文献
