Question: Does experimental warming, designed to simulate future warming of the Arctic, change the biomass allocation and mycorrhizal infection of tundra plants? Location: High Arctic tundra near Barrow, Alaska, USA (71°18′N 156°40′W). Methods: Above and below ground plant biomass of all species was harvested following 3–4 yr of 1‐2°C of experimental warming. Biomass allocation and arbuscular mycorrhizal infection were also examined in the two dominant species, Salix rotundifolia and Carex aquatilis. Results: Above‐ground biomass of graminoids increased in response to warming but there was no difference in total plant biomass or the ratio of above‐ground to below‐ground biomass for the community as a whole. Carex aquatilis increased above‐ground biomass and proportionally allocated more biomass above ground in response to warming. Salix rotundifolia increased the amount of above‐ and below‐ground biomass allocated per leaf in response to warming. Mycorrhizal infection rates showed no direct response to warming, but total abundance was estimated to have likely increased in response to warming owing to increased root biomass of S. rotundifolia. Conclusions: The community as a whole was resistant to short‐term warming and showed no significant changes in above‐ or below‐ground biomass despite significant increases in above‐ground biomass of graminoids. However, the patterns of biomass allocation for C. aquatilis and S. rotundifolia did change with warming. This suggests that long‐term warming may result in changes in the above‐ground to below‐ground biomass ratio of the community.  相似文献

In this study, the stable consortium composed by Pseudomonas reinekei strain MT1 and Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain MT3 (cell numbers in proportion 9:1) was under investigation to reveal bacterial interactions that take place under severe nutrient‐limiting conditions. The analysis of steady states in continuous cultures was carried out at the proteome, metabolic profile, and population dynamic levels. Carbon‐limiting studies showed a higher metabolic versatility in the community through upregulation of parallel catabolic enzymes (salicylate 5‐hydroxylase and 17‐fold on 2‐keto‐4‐pentenoate hydratase) indicating a possible alternative carbon routing in the upper degradation pathway highlighting the effect of minor proportions of strain MT3 over the major consortia component strain MT1 with a significant change in the expression levels of the enzymes of the mainly induced biodegradation pathway such as salicylate 1‐hydroxylase and catechol 1,2‐dioxygenase together with important changes in the outer membrane composition of P. reinekei MT1 under different culture conditions. The study has demonstrated the importance of the outer membrane as a sensing/response protective barrier caused by interspecies interactions highlighting the role of the major outer membrane proteins OprF and porin D in P. reinekei sp. MT1 under the culture conditions tested.  相似文献

1. Plants take nutrients for their growth and reproduction from not only soil but also symbiotic microbes in the rhizosphere, and therefore below‐ground microbes may indirectly influence the above‐ground arthropod community through changes in the quality and quantity of plants. 2. Rhizobia are root‐nodulating bacteria that provide NH4+ to legume plants. We examined bottom‐up effects of rhizobia on the community properties of the arthropods on host plants, using a root‐nodulating soybean strain (R+) and a non‐nodulating strain (R?) in a common garden. 3. R+ plants grew larger and produced a greater number of leaves than R? plants. We observed 28 species of herbivores and three taxonomic groups of predators on R+ and R? plants. The herbivorous species were classified into sap feeders (12 species) and chewers (16 species). 4. The species richness of overall herbivores, sap feeders, and chewers on R+ plants was greater than that on R? plants. Rhizobia positively affected the abundance of chewers. 5. The community composition of herbivores was significantly different between R? and R+ plants, although species diversity and evenness did not differ. 6. Rhizobia‐induced bottom‐up effects were transmitted to the third trophic level. The abundance, taxonomic richness, and diversity of the predators on R+ plants were greater but evenness was lower than those on R? plants. The community composition of predators was not affected by rhizobia. 7. These results indicate that the below‐ground microbes initiated bottom‐up effects on above‐ground herbivores and predators through trophic levels.  相似文献

Mean annual precipitation accounts for a large proportion of the variation in mean above‐ground net primary production (ANPP) of grasslands worldwide. However, the inter‐annual variation in production in any grassland site is only loosely correlated with precipitation. The longest record of variation in production and precipitation for a site corresponds to a shortgrass steppe in Colorado, USA. A previous study of this record showed that current‐year precipitation accounted for 39% of the inter‐annual variation in ANPP. In this note, we show that ca. one third of the unexplained variation is related to previous‐year ANPP: ANPP per mm of precipitation was higher in years preceded by wet, more productive years than in years preceded by average years; similarly, ANPP per mm of precipitation was lower in years preceded by dry, less productive years than in years preceded by average years. Since previous‐year ANPP was, in turn, associated with precipitation of a year before, current‐year ANPP was also explained by precipitation of two previous years. Our finding not only increases our predictive ability, but it also changes our understanding of how ANPP responds to fluctuations in precipitation. If ANPP is thought to vary according to current‐year precipitation only, it will simply track annual precipitation in time. According to this new result, however, ANPP fluctuations are buffered if wet, more productive years alternate with dry, less productive years, and they are amplified if wet or dry sequences of several years take place.  相似文献

Question: What characteristics of local biotic neighbourhood is the best proxy of competitive effects experienced by plants in a herbaceous community: (1) total above‐ground biomass, (2) root mass or (3) relative above‐ground abundance of selected species? Location: Grassland at ca. 1100 m a.s.l. in the Krkono?e Mts., northern Czech Republic. Methods: We implanted two phytometer species, Antho‐xanthum alpinum and Festuca rubra, into a mountain grassland, and examined their response to local variation in (1) total above‐ground biomass, (2) root mass at three soil depths, and (3) relative abundance of individual species above‐ground. Results : Performance of both phytometer species was determined much more consistently by the mass of neighbouring roots and by species composition of neighbours than by the total above‐ground biomass. The two phytometer species showed different responses to these parameters. The most important relationships were (1) negative relationship between performance of Anthoxanthum and mass of neighbouring roots at 0–3 cm, (2) positive relationship between performance of Festuca and mass of neighbouring roots at 3–6 cm, and (3) negative relationship between performance of Festuca and relative abundance of Festuca in the neighbourhood. Conclusions: Neighbouring root mass and above‐ground species composition are better determinants of biotic interactions than total above‐ground biomass of neighbours in the studied mountain grassland. However, the relationships found are not necessarily due to variation in competitive intensity but can be due to other hidden factors as well, e.g. local availability of resources.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising components for electrical biosensors due to their high surface‐to‐volume ratio and improved electron transfer properties. This review surveys CNT‐based label‐free indicator‐free biosensing strategies that have been demonstrated for the sensitive detection of nucleic acids. After an introduction to CNTs, the fabrication of biosensors and techniques for the immobilization of probe nucleic acids are outlined. Subsequently, two major label‐free strategies namely electrochemical transduction and field‐effect detection are presented. The focus is on direct detection methods that avoid labels, indicators, intercalating agents, mediators, and even secondary receptors. The review concludes with a comparison between the various biosensors and presents ways of engineering them so that they can be deployed in realistic diagnostic applications.  相似文献

Abstract The forage diggings of medium‐sized ground‐dwelling mammals (bandicoots and potoroos) were recorded over two seasons across 136 forested study sites, representing a stratified sample of the climatic, geological and topographic features of far south‐eastern mainland Australia. Diggings, presumably left by bandicoots, were recorded at a total of 42 sites, and those of potoroos at 27 sites. Statistical models were developed for the occurrence of these diggings, based on environmental attributes measured for each site. At a landscape scale, mean minimum temperature of the coldest month was an important explanatory variable for both groups of animals, with likelihood of their occurrence increasing with increasing temperature during that period. More locally, soil fertility and time since last fire also influenced the occurrence of bandicoot and potoroo diggings, while density of ground cover was additionally important in explaining the occurrence of bandicoot diggings. Bandicoot and potoroo diggings were more likely to occur with decreasing soil fertility and increasing time since fire, while occurrence of bandicoot diggings also increased with increasing density of ground cover. The possible management implications of our findings for conservation of medium‐sized ground‐dwelling mammals in multiple‐use forests are discussed.  相似文献

This is the first report of population variability of the contents of n‐alkanes and nonacosan‐10‐ol in the needle epicuticular waxes of Serbian spruce (Picea omorika). The hexane extracts of needle samples originated from three natural populations in Serbia (Vranjak, Zmajeva?ki potok, and Mile?evka Canyon) were investigated by GC and GC/MS analyses. The amount of nonacosan‐10‐ol varied individually from 50.05 to 74.42% (65.74% in average), but the differences between the three investigated populations were not statistically confirmed. The results exhibited variability of the composition of n‐alkanes in the epicuticular waxes with their size ranging from C18 to C35. The most abundant n‐alkanes were C29, C31, and C27 (35.22, 13.77, and 12.28% in average, resp.). The carbon preference index of all the n‐alkanes (CPItotal) of the P. omorika populations (average of populations IIII) ranged from 3.3 to 11.5 (mean of 5.9), while the average chain length (ACL) ranged from 26.6 to 29.2. The principal component and cluster analyses of the contents of nine n‐alkanes showed the greatest difference for the population growing in the Mile?evka Canyon. The obtained results were compared with previous literature data given for other Picea species, and this comparison was briefly discussed.  相似文献

This is the first report of individual variability and population diversity of the contents of nonacosan‐10‐ol and n‐alkanes in the needle cuticular waxes of Bosnian pines originated from Montenegro, regarded as Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis, and from Serbia, regarded as P. heldreichii var. pan?i?i. The amount of nonacosan‐10‐ol varied individually from 27.4 to 73.2% (55.5% in average), but differences between the four investigated populations were not statistically confirmed. The size of the n‐alkanes ranged from C18 to C33. The most abundant n‐alkanes were C23, C27, and C25 (12.2, 11.2, and 10.8% in average, resp.). The carbon preference index (CPI) of the n‐alkanes ranged from 0.8 to 3.1 (1.6 in average), while the average chain length (ACL) ranged from 20.9 to 26.5 (24.4 in average). Long‐chain and mid‐chain n‐alkanes prevailed (49.6 and 37.9% in average, resp.). It was also found that the populations of P. heldreichii var. leucodermis had predominantly a narrower range of n‐alkanes (C18? C31) than the trees of the variety pan?i?i (C18? C33). Differences between the varieties were also significant for most of the other characteristics of the n‐alkane pattern (e.g., most abundant n‐alkanes, CPI, ACL, and relative proportion of short‐, mid‐, and long‐chain n‐alkanes). The principle component and cluster analyses of eleven n‐alkanes confirmed the significant diversity of these two varieties.  相似文献

We investigated the role of carbon dioxide and host temperature in host attraction in frog‐biting midges (Corethrella spp). In these midges, females are known to use frog calls to localize their host, but the role of other host‐emitted cues has yet not been investigated. We hypothesized that carbon dioxide acts as a supplemental cue to frog calls. To test this hypothesis, we determined the responses of the midges to carbon dioxide, frog calls, and both cues. A significantly lower number of midges are attracted to carbon dioxide and silent traps than to traps broadcasting frog calls. Adding carbon dioxide to the calls does not increase the attractiveness to the midges. Instead, carbon dioxide can have deterrent effects on frog‐biting midges. Temperature of calling frogs is not a cue potentially available to the midges. Contrary to our hypothesis, there was no supplemental effect of carbon dioxide when presented in conjunction to calls. Midge host‐seeking behavior strongly depends on the mating calls emitted by their anuran host. Overall, non‐acoustic cues such as host body temperature and carbon dioxide are not important in long‐distance host location by frog‐biting midges.  相似文献

β‐poly(l ‐malic acid) (PMLA) is a biopolyester, which has attracted growing attention due to its potential applications in medicine and other industries. In this study, the biosynthetic pathway of PMLA and the fermentation strategies with mixed sugars were both investigated to enhance PMLA production by Aureobasidium pullulans ipe‐1. Metabolic intermediates and inhibitors were used to study the biosynthetic pathway of PMLA. It showed that exogenous addition of l ‐malic acid, succinic acid, TFA, and avidin had negligible effect on PMLA production, while pyruvic acid and biotin were the inhibitors, indicating that PMLA biosynthesis was probably related to phosphoenolpyruvate via oxaloacetate catalyzed by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase. Sucrose was suitable for achieving the highest PMLA concentration, while fructose generated a higher yield of PMLA (PMLA produced per biomass). Furthermore, the fed‐batch culture using fed solution with different sugar mixture for PMLA production was implemented. During the fed‐batch culture with mixed solution, fructose could increase PMLA production. Compared with the batch culture, the feeding with mixed sugar (sucrose and glucose) increased PMLA concentration by 23.9%, up to 63.2 g/L, and the final volume of the broth was increased by 25%. These results provide a good reference for process development and optimization of PMLA production.  相似文献

Abstract. Livestock overgrazing and stream incision in the western USA often result in encroachment and dominance of Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata (Big sagebrush) in riparian areas that formerly supported meadows. To define the alternative states and thresholds for these ecosystems, we conducted a restoration experiment that included sites with high, intermediate or low water tables. We used a paired‐plot approach in which one plot on each site was burned and seeded with native grasses and forbs typical of naturally occurring dry meadow and Artemisia/Leymus cinereus ecological types, while adjacent unburned plots served as controls. Sites with high and intermediate water tables had greater initial abundances of perennial grasses typical of dry meadows, such as Leymus triticoides and Poa secunda ssp. juncifolia, and these species increased after the burn. In contrast, sites with low water tables were dominated by annual forbs such as Chenopo‐dium album and Descurainia pinnata after the burn. Biomass increased progressively from 1997 to 1999 on burned plots, while controls showed little change. Burning effects were microsite specific, with former Artemisia microsites exhibiting lower biomass than interspaces initially, but similar or higher biomass by the third year. Establishment of seeded species was low and species composition was determined largely by pre‐burn vegetation. Artemisia dominated sites with high water tables appear to represent an alternative state of the dry meadow ecological type, while sites with low water table sites have crossed an abiotic threshold governed by water tables and represent a new ecological type. Burning is an effective tool for restoring relatively high water table sites, but low water table sites will require burning and seeding with species adapted to more xeric conditions.  相似文献
