In many animal species, males do not seek females directly butinstead locate and defend sites that contain spatially or temporallylimited resources essential to female survival and reproduction.Resident males that successfully repel conspecific rivals canmate with females attracted to these resources. In theory, increasingresource value increases harem size and thus increases the opportunity(Imates) for and strength of sexual selection on traits crucialto male resource-holding potential and mating success. I experimentallytested this hypothesis in the field using the Wellington treeweta, Hemideina crassidens (Orthoptera: Tettigonioidea: Anostostomatidae),a sexually dimorphic insect in which males use their enlargedmandibles as weapons in male–male contests over accessto females sheltering in tree cavities (galleries). By manipulatinggallery size, I showed that, compared with smaller galleries,larger galleries housed larger harems. Variation in gallerysize was an important determinant of Imates, but contrary toexpectation, greater opportunity existed in small galleriescompared with large galleries. As predicted, male weapon sizewas under stronger directional selection in large galleriesbecause the fitness benefits were greater under these conditionscompared with small galleries. My results help explain the positiveassociation between average weapon size and average gallerysize observed within and among tree weta populations in NewZealand.  相似文献

Both male and female Wellington tree weta, Hemideina crassidens,use cavities in trees as diurnal shelters. That these galleriesare often limiting in nature offers males the opportunity toincrease their reproductive success by monopolizing galleriesand the females residing in them. Male H. crassidens, can matureat either the 8th, 9th, or 10th instar, whereas females matureat the 10th instar only, and male head (and mandible) size positivelycovaries with ultimate instar number. It has been suggestedthat males fight for control of galleries by using their enlargedmandibles as weapons, and males with larger mandibles controlgalleries with more females. In the present study, I presenta statistical examination of sexual dimorphism, showing thattraits related to head size are on average significantly largerin males, whereas traits related to body size are on averagesignificantly larger in females. I tested three predictionsaddressing the hypothesis that sexual selection is driving megacephalyin male H. crassidens. First, as predicted, traits related tohead size show a positive allometric relationship with bodysize in males but not in females. Second, adapting a novel statisticaltechnique based on maximum likelihood and bootstrapping revealedthat males, but not females, exhibit a multimodal distributionin head and body size traits. This is likely a consequence ofmales maturing at one of three instars, which results in positivecovariance between the ultimate instar number and morphologicaltraits. Third, as predicted, single adult males with largerheads reside in galleries housing larger groups of adult females.  相似文献

Reproductive activities are generally costly to immune responsiveness because limited resources required by reproduction are diverted away from immunity (and vice versa). Reproduction, however, is not expected to affect the immune response in males and females similarly as mating is expected to negatively affect male immunity more so than female immunity. Here, I test the phenotypic plasticity hypothesis in the Wellington tree weta (Hemideina crassidens), a sexually dimorphic orthopteran insect that is endemic to New Zealand. My laboratory experiment showed that although males had higher rates of melanotic encapsulation than females, contrary to prediction, females were the only sex significantly affected by mating and the effect was positive. In addition to immunity differing between the sexes, immune function can differ intrasexually, particularly when males are polymorphic and different investment strategies are used to maximize fitness. Male H. crassidens exhibit alternative mating strategies that are represented by three different morphotypes. I therefore explored whether the morphs differed in their melanotic encapsulation response and whether mating affected the morphs differently. I found no difference among morphs or an effect of mating on male immune response.  相似文献

Abstract Adult males are often less immunocompetent than females. One explanation for this is that intense sexual selection causes males to trade‐off investment in immunity with traits that increase mating success. This hypothesis is tested in the Wellington tree weta (Hemideina crassidens), a large, sexually dimorphic orthopteran insect in which males possess enormous mandibular weaponry used during fights for access to female mates. Field‐collected males have a significantly greater immune response (greater melanotic encapsulation) than females, suggesting that body condition, longevity or an allied trait is important to male fitness, or that females require materials for egg production that would otherwise be used to boost immunity. Although immunity is expected to trade‐off against reproductive traits in both sexes, there is no significant relationship between immune response and weapon or testes size in males, nor fecundity in females.  相似文献

1. Mutual mate choice may be rare, occurring when both sexes invest heavily in reproduction, mating opportunities are abundant, and individuals differ in quality. 2. Mountain pine beetles, Dendroctonus ponderosae (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) appear to meet the conditions for mutual mate choice. We introduced males to females in breeding sites and observed the occurrence and speed of a male entering a female's gallery. We tested for consequences of mutual mate choice, namely condition‐dependent choosiness and assortative mating. 3. Males were more likely to enter a female's gallery when the gallery was in a smaller tree with less resin production and when the gallery was larger. Female body size and condition did not influence the probability of entry. Larger males were less likely to enter a gallery than were smaller males, probably because of size‐dependent choosiness rather than physical limitations. 4. Small males took longer to enter galleries of large females than of small females, whereas large males entered as quickly into galleries of large females as small females. This suggests size‐dependent choosiness by females. 5. No assortative mating by body size was detected, probably because males appeared to choose on the basis of female‐associated resources rather than on female traits.  相似文献

The most distinguishing feature of the tree weta genus Hemideina (Orthoptera: Anostostomatidae) is their cephalic weaponry, which is thought to be the result of sexual selection on males to aggressively defend groups of reproductive females. Mountain stone weta H. maori is a tree weta that shelters in cavities under flat rocks on rocky outcrops in the alpine region of the South Island. The main objectives of this study were to determine whether males with larger heads have access to greater numbers of females, and whether head size has an effect on male survival and longevity. Males with larger heads associated with larger groups of females than males with smaller heads. Male head size only accounted for 11% of the variation in mating opportunity when all rocks with females were considered, but explained 36% of the variation when only a few specific rocks that had large numbers of females were taken into account. The lower recapture rates of males in general and of smallheaded males in particular, further suggested that small males intermittently retreat to small cracks or cavities within tor columns, where there are unlikely to be large female groups. Thus, larger males had access to more females than smaller males. Moreover, larger males had no detectable disadvantage in terms of daily survival and longevity. This study provides strong evidence that larger male tree weta do associate with larger harems in the wild, however, questions relating to male weaponry size and mating success will become clearer only through paternity testing of weta under natural conditions.  相似文献

Strong sex-specific selection on traits common to both sexes typically results in sexual dimorphism. Here we find that Wellington tree weta (Hemideina crassidens) are sexually dimorphic in both head shape and size due to differential selection pressures on the sexes: males use their heads in male-male combat and feeding whereas females use theirs for feeding only. Remarkably, the sexes share a common ontogenetic trajectory with respect to head growth. Male head shape allometry is an extension of the female’s trajectory despite maturing two instars earlier, a feat achieved through ontogenetic acceleration and hypermorphosis. Strong sexual selection also favours the evolution of alternative reproductive strategies in which some males produce morphologically different weapons. Wild-caught male H. crassidens are trimorphic with regard to weapon size, a rare phenomenon in nature, and weapon shape is related to each morph’s putative mating strategy.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphisms in weaponry and aggression are common in species in which one sex (usually males) competes for access to mates or resources necessary for reproduction – sexually dimorphic weaponry and aggression, in other words, are frequently the result of intrasexual selection. In snapping shrimp, the major chela (snapping claw) can be a deadly weapon, and males of many species have larger chelae than females, a pattern readily interpreted as resulting from intrasexual selection. Thus, males might be expected to show more sex‐specific aggression than females, and be more aggressive overall. We tested these predictions in two species of snapping shrimp in a territorial defense context. Neither of these predictions was supported: in both species, females, but not males, engaged in sex‐specific aggression and females were more aggressive than males overall. These contrasting sexual dimorphisms – larger weaponry in males but higher aggression in females – highlight the importance of considering the function of weaponry and aggression in contexts other than direct competitions over mates. In addition, species differences in the degree of sexual dimorphism in chela size were due to differences in female, not male, chela size, and the species with greater sexual dimorphism in weaponry was significantly less aggressive overall; also, while paired and solitary males did not differ in residual chela size, for the species with greater sexual dimorphism, females carrying embryos had smaller residual chela sizes. These results suggest that understanding the sexual dimorphisms in weaponry and aggression in snapping shrimp requires understanding the relative costs and benefits of both in females as well as males.  相似文献

Recognition of conspecifics is an essential precursor of successful mating. Where related species coexist, species discrimination might be important, but because related species are similar, species signal recognition may actually be low. Chemical cues such as cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are frequently used by insects to identify suitable sexual partners. We predicted that New Zealand tree weta (Hemideina spp.), a genus of nocturnal ensiferan Orthoptera that live both allopatrically and sympatrically, use chemical signals from either frass or CHCs to find mates. In a series of six laboratory trials using both H. thoracica and H. crassidens, we found that male tree weta, but not female tree weta, occupied cavities primed with female cuticular cues more often than cavities without. However, males did not discriminate between chemical cues of male and female conspecifics, or between conspecifics and heterospecifics. In field trials, tree weta did not occupy artificial cavities primed with either female frass or female cuticular cues more often than unscented cavities. However, in both trials weta preferentially returned to cavities that had already been occupied earlier in the trials. A final field trial confirmed the presence of mixed species harems during the mating season in one region of sympatry. Our results suggest that selection on sex and species specific chemical cues that could be used to find conspecific mates is weak. Mixed species aggregations suggest that identification of conspecific mating cues has not evolved to be species specific. We infer that for male tree weta, the cost of mating with heterospecifics is likely less than not mating at all.  相似文献

Male age and sexual experience are important condition parameters that can influence mate choice and female fitness, yet they are seldom studied simultaneously. Here, we investigated the effect of male age and previous sexual experience on mating success and female fitness in the Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae). Males were either young or old, sexually experienced or naïve. Older and sexually experienced males obtained more copulations. However, females did not receive benefits in terms of lifetime fecundity, fertility, or longevity from mating with these males. Results suggest that males become more competitive as they age and gain sexual experience and may be able to maintain a high quality ejaculate compared to young males. Older experienced males may be manipulating females into preferentially mating with them at no benefit to females. Alternatively, females may prefer mating with older more experienced males and possibly receive other indirect benefits, but this remains to be tested.  相似文献

Synopsis The Red Sea razorfish, Xyrichtys pentadactylus, a territorial haremic labrid with dominance hierarchies within the harems. Theory predicts that primary males (fish developing initially as males) should be rare or nonexistent in haremic territorial species because the larger secondary males (males which have undergone sex and/or color change) limit access to females. Histological examination of gonads of 95 specimens showed that all males are derived from females by sex change (i.e. they are secondary males). During five months of field studies 100% of more than 200 observed matings were pair spawnings — the usual mating practice for monandric (having one type of male) species. Sex change in females was induced by male removal in nature. Isolation of four groups of females in aquaria showed that the largest female in the social group changes sex in the absence of a male, demonstrating that sex change is socially-controlled in this species.  相似文献

Sexually selected male weaponry is widespread in nature. Despite being model systems for the study of male aggression in Western science and for cricket fights in Chinese culture, field crickets (Orthoptera, Gryllidae, Gryllinae) are not known to possess sexually dimorphic weaponry. In a wild population of the fall field cricket, Gryllus pennsylvanicus, we report sexual dimorphism in head size as well as the size of mouthparts, both of which are used when aggressive contests between males escalate to physical combat. Male G. pennsylvanicus have larger heads, maxillae and mandibles than females when controlling for pronotum length. We conducted two experiments to test the hypothesis that relatively larger weaponry conveys an advantage to males in aggressive contests. Pairs of males were selected for differences in head size and consequently were different in the size of maxillae and mandibles. In the first experiment, males were closely matched for body size (pronotum length), and in the second, they were matched for body mass. Males with proportionately larger weaponry won more fights and increasing differences in weaponry size between males increased the fighting success of the male with the larger weaponry. This was particularly true when contests escalated to grappling, the most intense level of aggression. However, neither contest duration nor intensity was related to weaponry size as predicted by models of contest settlement. These results are the first evidence that the size of the head capsule and mouthparts are under positive selection via male-male competition in field crickets, and validate 800-year-old Chinese traditional knowledge.  相似文献

Young, small, sexually-inexperienced males suffer lower mating success than older, larger, more experienced males in many species of animals. I compared the mating success of male Desmognathus ochrophaeus (Amphibia: Caudata: Plethodontidae) reared to maturity in the laboratory with that of males collected as adults in the field. Courtship trials were staged in the laboratory between single males and females. Laboratory-reared males were significantly smaller in body size than adult males collected in the field, were certainly inexperienced sexually and were probably younger. No difference was found between laboratory-reared males and field-collected males in any measure of mating success, although the former apparently produced smaller sperm masses. I conclude that newly-mature male D. ochrophaeus are not discriminated against by females in the context of mate choice, and do not need to “rehearse” courtship in order to obtain successful inseminations. However, newly-mature males are probably at a disadvantage in terms of aggressive and sperm competition with larger males.  相似文献

In fallow deer (Dama dama), as well as in other lek-breedingungulates, receptive females arriving at leks commonly joinmales that are defending large harems. This tendency enhancesdifferences in harem size and mating success between males.It could occur because females independendy move to the samemales, because females are attracted to males with females,or because females are attracted to each other. Using controlledexperiments with estrous female fallow deer, we show that, althoughfemales are more attracted to males with harems than to thosewithout, they are as frequently attracted to groups of femaleswithout a male as to female groups with males. We conclude thatfemale fallow deer joining leks are attracted to each otherand copy each other's movements. As yet, there is no firm evidencein fallow deer or in other lek-breeding ungulates that femalescopy each other's choice of mating partners. Although females in numerous species generally prefer males with larger, brighter and more elaborate sexual traits, there is nonetheless considerable intra‐ and interpopulation variation in mating preferences amongst females that requires explanation. Such variation exists in the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, an important model organism for the study of sexual selection and mate choice. While female guppies tend to prefer more ornamented males as mates, particularly those with greater amounts of orange coloration, there remains variation both in male traits and female mating preferences within and between populations. Male body size is another trait that is sexually selected through female mate choice in some species, but has not been examined as extensively as body coloration in the guppy despite known intra‐ and interpopulation variation in this trait among adult males and its importance for survivorship in this species. In this study, we used a dichotomous‐choice test to quantify the mating preferences of female guppies, originating from a low‐predation population in Trinidad, for two male traits, body length and area of the body covered with orange and black pigmentation, independently of each other. We expected strong female mating preferences for both male body length and coloration in this population, given relaxation from predation and presumably relatively low cost of choice. Females indeed exhibited a strong preference for larger males as expected, but surprisingly a weaker (but nonetheless significant) preference for orange and black coloration. Interestingly, larger females demonstrated stronger preferences for larger males than did smaller females, which could potentially lead to size‐assortative mating in nature.  相似文献

Some males of the cerambycid beetle Trachyderes (Dendrobias) mandibularisgained access to mates by defending a patchily distributed food resource, the fruits of saguaro cactus (Cereus giganteus).Male beetles differed greatly in fighting ability because of extreme variation in body size and a striking dimorphism in mandibular weaponry. As is typical in resource defense mating systems, larger males had an advantage in combat. Major males with their large pincer jaws invariably defeated minor males with small cutting jaws, and larger majors usually defeated smaller majors. However, although minor males were at a competitive disadvantage on saguaro fruits, they did not suffer a great penalty in terms of mating probability. In contrast, minor males have a considerably lower probability of mating at desert broom (Baccharis sarothroides)where sap ooze sites are few in number and effectively monopolized by major males (Goldsmith, S. K., Behav. Ecol. Sociobiol.20,111–115, 1987). On saguaros, minor males successfully obtained mates through scramble competition while avoiding direct physical competition with larger, territorial major males. Smaller males of either morph may have succeeded in acquiring mates in part because there were many more ripe saguaro fruits than beetles, which made it impossible for larger major males to monopolize females effectively under these conditions.  相似文献

Males ofTrichogramma sp., a gregarious parasitoid which attacks eggs of the yellow-legged tussock mothIvela auripes (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), are polymorphic for wings. In mating within host eggs, no difference in mating success was observed between winged (large) males and wingless (small) males, whereas in mating outside eggs, the former were superior to the latter. Some wingless males were observed to perform sneaking copulation on egg masses. In the 1-male brood, which is thought to be founded by 1 mother wasp, the male size tended to decrease as the number of females per brood increased. But in the 2-male brood, which is assumed to be added with 1 more smaller male produced by the second mother wasp in double parasitism, the larger male did not reduce his size, compared with the male of the 1-male brood with an equal number of females. This phenomenon can be explained reasonably by a version of the kin-selection theory: When there is only 1 male in a host egg, he transfers resources in the egg to his sister females, but, when another male appears, he decides to act to the females less altruistically.  相似文献

The mating systems of seven previously unstudied members of the colletid bee genus Hylaeus Fabricius and one of Hyleoides Smith are described. Male mating tactics can be categorized as territorial (perched males defend flowers or other sites that attract receptive females) or non-territorial (patrolling males search for receptive females at flowering plants). The four species in which some territorial males occur are characterized by: 1. grappling fights among males for preferred perches; 2. territorial control by larger males; 3. the possession of prominent spines or other projections on the venter of the abdomen in larger males; and 4. the occurrence of some males that are as large as, or larger than, the largest females of their species (the ‘large-male phenomenon’). In contrast, the four species that lack territorial males are distinctive in that males: 1. do not engage in grappling contests; 2. lack abdominal weaponry; and 3. are smaller than the largest females of their species. In addition, we searched for the large-male phenomenon in museum collections of four species of Hylaeus that exhibit male abdominal spines (presumed to be the weapons used by territorial individuals) and two other species that lack these attributes (presumed non-territorial patrolling species). The results tend to support the sexual-selection-for-fighting-ability hypothesis, which argues that the evolution of unusually large males is a selective consequence of aggressive male—male competition for access to mates. The limitations of the present data set as a comparative test of this hypothesis are discussed.  相似文献

Reconstruction of Parentage in a Band of Captive Hamadryas Baboons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The male leaders of free-ranging harem groups of hamadryas baboons are believed to mate exclusively with the female members of their harems, which typically contain no more than 2–3 females. Using no-parent parentage exclusion analysis (PEA) we identified the paternity of 25 offspring born in a captive band of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) containing five adult males, each with a stable harem of about five females. Nine of 13 microsatellite (SSR) loci known to be highly polymorphic in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were successful in identifying the sires of all but two offspring without knowledge of the dams' genotypes, and we were able to determine the sires of all offspring when the dams' genotypes were considered. Mating success of the males ranged between 2 and 7 offspring and bore no clear relationship to the males' ages, ranks or the number of females in their harems. The males sired 7 of the 25 offspring with females outside their own harems, with higher-ranking males exhibiting greater success monopolizing access to females in their harem than lower-ranking males did. More surprisingly, the females assigned as the dams of 14 of the 25 offspring could be unequivocally excluded from parentage. The identity of the true dam could be determined for each of these 14 offspring using single-parent PEA and was uncorrelated with the ranks of these offsprings' sires and whether the offspring were born to dams outside the sires' harem groups. The combined effect of this extraharem mating and kidnapping was that only 12 of the 25 offspring were raised within their sires' harem groups. A second group of hamadryas baboons of identical structure exhibited the same high incidences of infant kidnapping and mating outside the harem group. It is unclear whether these behaviors provide an adaptive advantage or represent aberrant behavior resulting from captivity or other circumstances.  相似文献

Dominance is an important determinant of reproductive success in many species, and size is usually an indicator of dominance status, with larger, dominant individuals physically and physiologically preventing smaller subordinates from mating. However, small size may be advantageous in some mating contexts because enhanced manoeuvrability enables males to get closer to females during mating. Here, we determined the paternity success and testes size of dominant and subordinate male zebrafish (Danio rerio), in pairs that controlled for social status. There was no statistical difference in both body size and testes size between dominant and subordinate males. Dominant males sired significantly more offspring than subordinates, but when subordinates were small, they had a greater share of the paternity than larger subordinates. Small male advantage may be one mechanism by which variation in body size is maintained in this species.  相似文献
