Sexual receptivity in sugar-and-water-fed females of the anautogenous blowfly Lucilia cuprinawas low when they had been housed in groups but high when they had been housed singly. Females were completely unreceptive on the second and third days after emergence, irrespective of housing conditions. There after receptivity increased but more rapidly in the singly housed females. Experiments in which females were housed singly for some days and then in groups, or vice versa, showed that receptivity could be influenced by housing conditions experienced both over the first 5 days after emergence and later in life.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The deterrent effect of alkaloids on feeding by the black blowfly Phormia regina Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae) was tested by determining tarsal thresholds for mixtures of sucrose and alkaloids. The following alkaloids were used: atropine sulphate, berberine sulphate, quinine mono-hydrochloride, caffeine, yohimbine sulphonic ester, pilocarpine hydrochloride, coniine hydrochloride and codeine. The same alkaloids were tested electrophysiologically on tarsal chemoreceptors (D hairs). Both behaviourally and electrophysiologically alkaloids reduced response to sucrose. Deterrence and peripheral inhibition could be blocked by increasing the concentration of sucrose. Application of kinetic analyses to the electrophysiological data ruled out competitive, non-competitive, and uncompetitive inhibition at receptor sites. There is no correlation of thresholds with available data on lipid solubility or octanol/water partition coefficients. The diverse pharmacological properties of alkaloids suggest that there is no uniform limiting mechanism for this multiform array of compounds.  相似文献

The Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina , initiates more than 85% of fly strikes on sheep in Australia with an estimated average annual cost of A$280 million to the Australian sheep industry. LuciTrap® is a commercially available, selective trap for L. cuprina consisting of a plastic bucket with multiple fly entry cones and a synthetic attractant. The impact of LuciTrap on populations of L. cuprina on sheep properties in five Australian states was evaluated by comparing L. cuprina populations on paired properties with and without LuciTraps over seasons when significant fly populations could be expected. Twenty-four comparisons (trials) were conducted over 4 years. During times of 'higher fly density' (when the 48 h geometric mean of trap catches on the control property was greater than five L. cuprina ), the overall geometric mean trap catches for control and trapped properties differed significantly ( P  < 0.001) with mean trap catches of 19.4 and 7.74 L. cuprina , respectively. The selectivity of the LuciTrap was confirmed with 59% of all trapped flies being L. cuprina . Chrysomya spp. and Calliphora spp. constituted 9.3% and 1.1% of the catches with a variety of other flies (mainly Sarcophagidae and Muscidae ) providing the remainder (31%). Lucilia sericata was only trapped in Tasmania and made up 7.7% of the Lucilia spp. catch in that state. Seventy-two per cent of the trapped L. cuprina were female. The deployment of LuciTrap on sheep properties at one trap per 100 sheep from the beginning of the anticipated fly season suppressed the populations of L. cuprina by 60% compared with matched control properties. The LuciTrap is a selective and easy to use fly trap and constitutes an effective, non-insecticidal tool for use in integrated management programs for L. cuprina .  相似文献

We performed a computational analysis employing a cellular automata model to investigate the larval dispersal behavior of blowflies. The spatially discrete model developed here, incorporates simple behavioral rules in local interactions to produce the large-scale patterns observed in the larval dispersal process. We were able to find parameter ranges that could simulate the required experimental dispersal patterns in the study. In particular, oscillations, initially explained as a response to larval aggregation, could be explained by the combination of different mechanisms acting during the dispersal process. Peaks have characterized the interaction between dispersing larvae, but as a function of time. Then, the number of larvae decreased as a result of the pupation process, and neighborhood interaction became stingy.  相似文献

Abstract. Inhibition of peripheral chemoreceptors by micromolar concentrations of alkaloids may account for feeding deterrence. Earlier work showed a reduction in both the proboscis extension response and sensory activity recorded from sugar-sensitive cells in tarsal D and labellar 'largest' hairs when the stimulating solution was sucrose mixed with alkaloids. In the present work a similar behavioural effect was also seen when alkaloids were mixed with pyranose and furanose sugars as well as with water and deuterium oxide. Behavioural deterrence continued after the stimulus was removed. Complete recovery occurred after 120 s. To check against the possibility of a central inhibitory state (CIS) having been established two sets of experiments were run in which quinine was applied to a single tarsus followed by a sucrose post-test to the contralateral tarsus. In one half of the tests sugar was applied first (S1Q2), and in the other half quinine first (Q1S2). Comparable tests were run with contralateral labellar hairs. No CIS was set up by Q1; however, a central excitatory state (CES) was set up by S1. In order to test (a) whether quinine had different effects on other known or unknown receptors and (b) post-ingestive effects, volumes imbibed in single drinks of sucrose with and without quinine were compared. Volumes of the mixture imbibed were not significantly different from what was predicted based on the known reduction in sensory acitivty.  相似文献

Abstract. The pattern of feeding is described for males of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina , with ad libitum access to either 0.1 M or 1.0 M glucose solution. Flies given the 0.1 M solution ingested nearly 3 times the volume taken by flies given the 1.0 M solution by eating meals of, on average, twice the size about 1.5 times as frequently. Flies were usually relatively inactive following a meal, with the extent of this post-prandial quiescence being a function both of meal size and concentration of sugar. Quiescence lasted only about 20% of the average intermeal interval, however, and there was no correlation between meal size and time to the next meal. The crop emptied more slowly when it contained 1.0 M rather than 0.1 M glucose solution and the crop was, on average, fuller at the beginning of a meal on the higher concentration. The volume of solution imbibed during a meal was positively correlated with time since the end of the preceding meal. The average crop volume at the end of a meal was similar in flies feeding on 0.1 M and 1.0 M solutions. The results are considered in relation to published information on control of feeding and compensation in the blowfly Phormia regina.  相似文献

The development of the Oriental latrine fly, Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius), and hairy maggot blowfly, C. rufifacies (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was studied at four different temperatures (22°C, 25°C, 29°C and 31°C) in order to draw correlations between larval age, body length and body dry weight. The mean larval body length increased steadily from a minimum of 1.4 mm for C. megacephala and 1.8 mm for C. rufifacies to a maximum of 17.4 mm for C. megacephala and 15.9 mm for C. rufifacies at different temperatures. Similarly, the mean dry weight increased steadily from a minimum of 0.0007 g for C. megacephala (second instar) and 0.0008 g for C. rufifacies (second instar) to a maximum of 0.0290 g for C. megacephala and 0.0270 g for C. rufifacies at different temperatures. Entomological evidence is often used to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI) and both of these species are important from a forensic point of view. Graphs of age of larvae vs. body length and age of larvae vs. dry body weight at different temperatures can be used to estimate the larval age of these two species.  相似文献

Polyphenol oxidase (EC 1.14.18.1) was purified from the pupae of blowfly (Sarcophaga bullata) by a procedure involving ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-100. Kinetic characteristics of the enzyme were determined using L-DOPA as substrate. The specific activity of the enzyme was 770 U/mg, and the Michaelis constant (Km) was 1.5 +/- 0.1 mM (pH 6.8, 30 degrees C). Activity was maximal at 40 degrees C, pH 6.5. Chemical modification experiments demonstrated that cysteine and tryptophan residues are essential and arginine residues are not essential to the enzyme function. The enzyme is inhibited by quercetin with an IC50 of 0.20 +/- 0.06 mM. The inhibition is of competitive type, and the inhibition constant was determined to be 88 micro M.  相似文献

The first five matings by both large and small L. cuprinamales switched off receptivity in over 90% of females for 7 days after their initial mating. Small males were virtually unable to switch off females after five matings, whereas the fifth to tenth matings by large males rendered nearly two-thirds of females unreceptive. Mating duration of large and small males was about 11 min even after numerous matings. Given the rarity of field virgins and the temporal and spatial variability of female-required resources, larger males may enjoy greater mating success due to their ability to switch off many females in succession. Virgin males preferred to mate with nonvirgin females larger than themselves; males paired with females smaller than themselves adopted mate-rejection behavior typical of unreceptive females.  相似文献

The effect of exposing blowflies to split dose heat treatment is reported. Split doses are shown to have a simple additive effect unless they are separated by 6 h or more, when repair has clearly taken place.  相似文献

The major radiolabelled product released from ring gland and brain-ring gland complexes of third instar larval and pre-pupal stages of the sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina upon incubation with L-[methyl-3H]methionine corresponded to one diastereomer of juvenile hormone III bisepoxide (JHB3). Endocrine glands incubated with the juvenile hormone precursor 2E,6E-farnesoic acid released increased quantities of JHB3, together with significant amounts of juvenile hormone III but not the isomeric methyl 2E-6,7-epoxyfarnesoate. Synthesis of JHB3 was developmentally and neurally regulated. Ring glands and brain-ring gland complexes from third instar larvae released more JHB3 than comparable preparations from pre-pupae, while isolated corpus allatum segments of the gland were more active than intact brain-gland complexes. These results reinforce the emerging status of JHB3 as the characteristic juvenile hormone of dipteran insects. Arch. Insect Biochem. Physiol. 34:239–253, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. This artificial selection study with the flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata Parker, tested the hypothesis that phenotypic variability in the length of the larval stage (under non-diapause conditions) is largely a consequence of genetic variability. Selection for late pupariation resulted in a line that pupariated significantly later and also developed more slowly during other stages of the life cycle. In a diapause-inducing environment, the selected line pupariated later, showed a higher incidence of pupal diapause, and remained in diapause longer than the unselected line. This is the first experimental evidence in S.bullata to show that diapause incidence and duration are related. The relationship between developmental rate and diapause traits may stem from the pleiotropic effects of genes associated with late pupariation, or from one or more genes associated with late pupariation being closely linked to genes that affect diapause.  相似文献

Abstract. The quantity of specific antibody ingested by larvae of Lucilia cuprina and its fate after ingestion were studied in larvae grown on sheep and on an artificial diet. Larvae grown to late first or early second instar on sheep vaccinated with horse myoglobin contained 66% less specific antibody detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay than larvae grown to a similar stage on an artificial diet containing 75% serum from the same sheep. A similar result was obtained when larvae were grown to mid-third instar. Larvae grown on sheep to first or second instar contained approximately the same quantity of specific antibody per unit weight of larvae as those grown to third instar. Larvae grown on diet to third instar contained 22% less specific antibody per unit weight than those grown to first or second instar. In larvae grown on diet to late third instar, ingested diet retained 91 ± 12% of its original specific antibody activity in the crop, 50 ± 11% in the anterior midgut, 8 ± 2% in the posterior midgut and 13 ± 6% in the hindgut. The mean concentration of total immunoglobulin detectable in the haemolymph of individual third instar larvae grown on diet was 1.7 ± 2.8 ug/ml. Assays of specific antibody in the haemolymph of similarly reared larvae indicated that all or most of this immunoglobulin remained functional. The implications of the quantities and distribution of ingested functional antibody found in feeding larvae of L.cuprina are discussed in relation to the possibility of vaccinating sheep against these larvae and the selection of likely internal targets as sources of potential protective antigens.  相似文献

A comprehensive simulation model for sheep blowfly strike due to Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which builds on previously published versions but also incorporates important new empirical data, is used to explain patterns of lamb and ewe strike recorded on 370 farms in south-west, south-east and central England and Wales. The model is able to explain a significant percentage of the variance in lamb strike incidence in all four regions, and ewe strike in three of the four regions. The model is able to predict the start of seasonal blowfly strike within one week in three of the four regions for both ewes and lambs, and within 3 weeks in the fourth region. It is concluded that the accuracy of the model will allow it to be used to assess the likely efficacy of new control techniques and the effects of changes in existing husbandry practices on strike incidence. The model could also be used to give sheep farmers advance warning of approaching strike problems. However, the ability to forecast future strike patterns is dependent on the accuracy of the weather projections; the more long-term the forecast, the more approximate the prediction is likely to be. When applied on a regional basis, model forecasts indicate expected average patterns of strike incidence and may not therefore be appropriate for individual farmers whose husbandry practices differ substantially from the average.  相似文献

Abstract. Duration of some pre-adult stages of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, C.alpina Zett., C.vomitoria Linn., Phormia terraenovae R.-D. and Lucilia sericata Meig. were determined at 3.5–26oC, in the context of use of these insects in forensic estimates of post-mortem intervals. Egg development in C. vicina occurs down to at least 3.5oC, larval growth to 4oC and puparial formation, development and perfect adult emergence to 5oC. Growth curves by successive weighing of individual larvae showed specific differences in rates of development of the above species at constant temperatures. Alternating temperatures for 12 h periods (such as 10oC and 20oC) to simulate diurnal changes, usually, but not at all temperature pairs tested, caused acceleration of growth relative to the corresponding constant temperature (15oC in the above case), in C.vomitoria, P.terraenovae and L.sericata , but usually caused retardation of larval growth in C.vicina. In this species, larvae as single individuals on beef liver in small tubes grew on average at the same rates as those (50–100 larvae) growing communally. All species showed variation in larval growth between individuals, more marked in C.vicina , and slower-growing larvae showed increased unexplained mortality. Because of this and to avoid complication by fast-growing larvae from later laid egg batches on a carcass, growth curves given are those of mean weights of the heaviest 25% (upper quartile) of groups of 40–90 feeding larvae. Variation in growth rates, and acceleration or retardation of growth in different species under alternating temperatures, thus affect suggested procedures in obtaining estimates of post-mortem intervals using these insects.  相似文献

The effects of exposure of adults of the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) for 24 h to cloth targets impregnated with the chitin synthesis inhibitor triflumuron plus sucrose or sucrose only, were considered. When both male and female L. sericata were exposed to targets treated with sucrose only, the percentage egg hatch varied between 60–75%. When both sexes were exposed to targets treated with 10% triflumuron plus sucrose the percentage egg hatch varied between 3–7%. When females alone were exposed to triflumuron, prior to the introduction of unexposed males, egg hatch varied between 4–14%. The exposure of males alone to 10% triflumuron treated targets, prior to the introduction of unexposed virgin females, did not give any consistent significant decrease in the mean percentage egg hatch. However, repetition of this trial with males exposed to targets treated with 15 or 20% triflumuron, resulted in a percentage egg hatch of 3.1% and 10.3%, respectively. These results suggest that at relatively high target concentrations, males can transfer effective doses of triflumuron to unexposed virgin females. The exposure of adults to triflumuron treated targets did not significantly increase the mortality of either male or female L. sericata. Furthermore, bioassays showed that there was no significant decline in the ovicidal effectiveness of targets treated with 10% triflumuron and sucrose solution following exposure to sun and rain for up to 8 weeks in 1995 and 1996.The results suggest that targets treated with triflumuron suspension concentrate and sucrose may form the basis of an effective system for the control of L. sericata in the field. However, the relatively high concentrations of triflumuron required and the low efficiency with which males are able to transfer effective doses to unexposed females may diminish one of the main theoretical advantages of using a chitin synthesis inhibitor, such as triflumuron, over a conventional insecticide.  相似文献

, , and 1992. Hypersensitivity responses and repeated infections with Lucilia cuprina, the sheep blowfly. International Journal for Parasitology 22: 1175–1177. Sheep repeatedly infected with L. cuprina at 2- but not 4-week intervals developed partial resistance to infection after five infections, as measured by larval recovery. However, resistance did not persist for more than three infections. Skin weal responses were measured after injection of larval products simultaneously with each infection. The only correlation between weal size and larval recoveries occurred at infection 1 and indicated a relationship between skin sensitivity and innate rather than acquired resistance. The results suggest that resistance to L. cuprina can develop after repeated infections but that it is short lived and requires frequent larval exposure. A role for hypersensitivity responses was not confirmed by the weal responses but was suggested by the size of wound developed per larva recovered.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Under laboratory light: dark cycles, the flight activity of adult Lucilia cuprina (Wied.) was low during darkness and uniformity high during light. This pattern persisted as a rhythm both in constant darkness and in constant light of intensity up to 1lx, with a period of approximately 22 h in each. Light pulses of 15 min at l00lx applied to the free-running rhythm in constant darkness generated phase shifts of up to 60°, 12-h light pulses of the same intensity generated maximal (180°) phase shifts. The phase response curves had shapes similar to those of a number of other insect rhythms. When exposed to light periods (70 lx) of greater than 12 h followed by constant darkness, the rhythm reinitiated at the light-dark transition from a constant phase equivalent to that at the time of the light-dark transition in the LD 12:12 cycle.  相似文献
