The aim of this study was to identify the mechanisms that contribute to the decline in knee extensor (KE) muscles strength after a prolonged running exercise. During the 2 days preceding a 30-km running race [duration 188.7 +/- 27.0 (SD) min] and immediately after the race, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 12 trained runners. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine the level of voluntary activation (%VA). The vastus lateralis electromyogram was recorded. KE MVC decreased from pre- to postexercise (from 188.1 +/- 25.2 to 142.7 +/- 29.7 N x m; P < 0.001) as did %VA (from 98.8 +/- 1.8 to 91.3 +/- 10.7%; P < 0.05). The changes from pre- to postexercise in these two variables were highly correlated (R = 0.88; P < 0.001). The modifications in the mechanical response after the 80-Hz stimulation and M-wave peak-to-peak amplitude were also significant (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively). It can be concluded that 1) central fatigue, neuromuscular propagation, and muscular factors are involved in the 23.5 +/- 14.9% reduction in MVC after a prolonged running bout at racing pace and 2) runners with the greatest KE strength loss experience large activation deficit.  相似文献

Alterations of neuromuscular function after an ultramarathon.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Neuromuscular fatigue of the knee extensor (KE) and plantar flexor (PF) muscles was characterized after a 65-km ultramarathon race in nine well-trained runners by stimulating the femoral and tibial nerves, respectively. One week before and immediately after the ultramarathon, maximal twitches were elicited from the relaxed KE and PF. Electrically evoked superimposed twitches of the KE were also elicited during maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) to determine maximal voluntary activation. MVC and maximal voluntary activation decreased significantly after the ultramarathon (-30.2 +/- 18.0% and -27.7 +/- 13.0%, respectively; P < 0.001). Surprisingly, peak twitch increased after the ultramarathon from 15.8 +/- 6.3 to 19.7 +/- 3.3 N. m for PF (P < 0.01) and from 131.9 +/- 21.2 to 157.1 +/- 35.9 N for KE (P < 0.05). Also, shorter contraction and half-relaxation times were observed for both muscles. The compound muscle action potentials (M wave) were not significantly altered by the ultramarathon with the exception of the soleus, which showed a slightly higher M-wave amplitude after the running. From these results, it can be concluded that 65 km of running 1) severely depressed the maximal voluntary force capacity mainly because of a decrease in maximal voluntary activation, 2) potentiated the twitch mechanical response, and 3) did not change significantly the M-wave characteristics.  相似文献

This study investigated neuromuscular fatigue following low-intensity resistance exercise with vascular restriction (VR) and without vascular restriction (control, CON). Fourteen males participated in two experimental trials (VR and CON) each separated by 48 h. Each participant performed two isometric maximum voluntary contractions (MVCs) before and after five sets of 20 dynamic constant external resistance leg extension exercises (DCER-EX) at 20% of one-repetition maximum (1-RM). The participants were asked to lift (1.5 s) and lower (1.5 s) the load at a constant velocity. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the vastus lateralis during MVC and DCER-EX. Twitch interpolation was used to assess the percent of maximal voluntary activation (%VA) during the MVC. During performing five sets of 20 DCER-EX, the increases (p < 0.05) in EMG amplitude and decreases (p < 0.05) in EMG mean power frequency were similar for both VR and CON. However, there were significant differences between VR and CON for MVC force, %VA, and potentiated twitch force and significant interactions for EMG amplitude. VR decreased MVC force, %VA, potentiated twitch force, and EMG amplitude more than CON. Our findings suggest that the VR-induced fatigue may have been due to a combination of peripheral (decreases in potentiated twitch) and central (decreases in %VA and EMG amplitude) fatigue.  相似文献

Fascicle angle (FA) is suggested to increase as a result of fiber hypertrophy and furthermore to serve as the explanatory link in the discrepancy in the relative adaptations in the anatomical cross-sectional area (CSA) and fiber CSA after resistance training (RT). In contrast to RT, the effects of endurance training on FA are unclear. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate and compare the longitudinal effects of either progressive endurance training (END, n = 7) or RT (n = 7) in young untrained men on FA, anatomical CSA, and fiber CSA. Muscle morphological measures included the assessment of vastus lateralis FA obtained by ultrasonography and anatomical CSA by magnetic resonance imaging of the thigh and fiber CSA deduced from histochemical analyses of biopsy samples from m. vastus lateralis. Functional performance measures included VO2max and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The RT produced increases in FA by 23 ± 8% (p < 0.01), anatomical CSA of the knee extensor muscles by 9 ± 3% (p = 0.001), and fiber CSA by 19 ± 7% (p < 0.05). RT increased knee extensor MVC by 20 ± 5% (p < 0.001). END increased VO2max by 10 ± 2% but did not evoke changes in FA, anatomical CSA, or in fiber CSA. In conclusion, the morphological changes induced by 10 weeks of RT support that FA does indeed serve as the explanatory link in the observed discrepancy between the changes in anatomical and fiber CSA. Contrarily, 10 weeks of endurance training did not induce changes in FA, but the lack of morphological changes from END indirectly support the fact that fiber hypertrophy and FA are interrelated.  相似文献

Exercise training programs can increase strength and improve submaximal force control, but the effects of yoga as an alternative form of steadiness training are not well described. The purpose was to explore the effect of a popular type of yoga (Bikram) on strength, steadiness, and balance. Young adults performed yoga training (n = 10, 29 +/- 6 years, 24 yoga sessions in 8 weeks) or served as controls (n = 11, 26 +/- 7 years). Yoga sessions consisted of 1.5 hours of supervised, standardized postures. Measures before and after training included maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force of the elbow flexors (EF) and knee extensors (KE), steadiness of isometric EF and KE contractions, steadiness of concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) KE contractions, and timed balance. The standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV, SD/mean force) of isometric force and the SD of acceleration during CON and ECC contractions were measured. After yoga training, MVC force increased 14% for KE (479 +/- 175 to 544 +/- 187 N, p < 0.05) and was unchanged for the EF muscles (219 +/- 85 to 230 +/- 72 N, p > 0.05). The CV of force was unchanged for EF (1.68 to 1.73%, p > 0.05) but was reduced in the KE muscles similarly for yoga and control groups (2.04 to 1.55%, p < 0.05). The variability of CON and ECC contractions was unchanged. For the yoga group, improvement in KE steadiness was correlated with pretraining steadiness (r = -0.62 to -0.84, p < 0.05); subjects with the greatest KE force fluctuations before training experienced the greatest reductions with training. Percent change in balance time for individual yoga subjects averaged +228% (19.5 +/- 14 to 34.3 +/- 18 seconds, p < 0.05), with no change in controls. For young adults, a short-term yoga program of this type can improve balance substantially, produce modest improvements in leg strength, and improve leg muscle control for less-steady subjects.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to investigate the influence of age and/or obesity on postural control, ankle muscle activities during balance testing and force production capacities.Materials and methods4 groups; control group (CG; n = 25; age = 31.8 ± 7.5 years; BMI = 21.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2), obese group (OG; n = 25; age = 34.4 ± 9.5 years; BMI = 39.6 ± 5.4 kg/m2), elderly group (EG; n = 15; age = 77.1 ± 8.4 years; BMI = 24.4 ± 1.3 kg/m2) and obese elderly group (ObEG; n = 12; age = 78.6 ± 6.6 years; BMI = 34.5 ± 3.1 kg/m2) performed maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) before testing to calculate the maximal relative force of ankle plantar flexor (PF) and dorsal flexor (DF) muscles. Center of pressure (CoP) parameters and the electromyography (EMG) activity of PF and DF muscles were collected during MVC, quiet standing and limit of stability (LoS) testing along antero-posterior and medio-lateral axes.ResultsMaximal relative force was higher in EG and ObEG than CG and OG, respectively (p < 0.001). CoP parameters, distance traveled along the antero-posterior axis and EMG activity of PF were higher in OG, EG and ObEG compared to CG (p < 0.001) and in EG compared to ObEG (p < 0.05).The EMG activity of PF was positively correlated with CoP parameters in OG and ObEG (r > 0.6; p < 0.05). Maximal relative force of PF (r > −0.6; p < 0.05) was negatively correlated with CoP parameters in ObEG and EG.ConclusionObesity-related postural control alteration is associated with increased activity of PF. This neuromuscular adaptation may reflect deteriorations of the proprioceptive system and is likely additional to age-related muscular impairments. This may be a mechanism by which obesity increases postural control alterations in elderly.  相似文献

The 24 h recovery pattern of contractile properties of the triceps surae muscle, following a period of muscle fatigue, was compared in physically active young (25 years, n = 10) and elderly (66 years, n = 7) men. The fatigue test protocol consisted of 10 min of intermittent submaximal 20 Hz tetani. The maximal twitch (Pt) and tetanic force at 3 frequencies (10, 20 and 50 Hz) were determined at baseline and at 15 min, 1, 4 and 24 h after fatiguing the muscle. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and vertical jump (MVJ) were also assessed. The loss of force during the fatigue test was not significantly different between the young (18 +/- 13%) and elderly (22 +/- 15%). Both groups showed similar and significant reductions of Pt (15%), tetanic force (10 to 35%) and rate of force development (dp/dt) (20%) 15 min and 1 h into recovery. The loss of force was greater at the lower stimulation frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz. Time-to-peak tension was unchanged from baseline during recovery in either group. The average rate of relaxation of twitch force (-dPt/dt) was decreased (p less than 0.05) and half-relaxation time significantly increased at 15 min and 1 h in the elderly but not the young. The findings indicate that after fatiguing contractions, elderly muscle demonstrates a slower return to resting levels of the rate and time course of twitch relaxation compared to the young.  相似文献

The dynamic performance and electrically evoked mechanical properties of elderly triceps surae muscle have been investigated in 9 men, aged 69 yr. Dynamic performance consisted of cycling on a force bicycle and a vertical jump off two feet from a force platform. The results showed that the time to peak tension (TPT) and half relaxation time (1/2 RT) were significantly greater (p less than 0.001) by 30 ms and 22 ms and the supramaximal twitch (Pt) and tetanic (20 Hz-P020) tensions and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were less by 45 N (-33%), 708 N (-49%), and 899 N (-43%) in the elderly compared with young male control subjects. On the force platform, the height jumped (Ht), maximal force exerted (P), take-off velocity (VT), net impulse (NI) and peak power output (W) were less by 18.6 cm, 173 N, 0.9 ms-1, 52 Ns and 1120 w respectively. Similar differences of power, force and velocity were observed on the force bicycle. The reduction of W in the elderly was associated with the contractile characteristics of the leg muscle. The loss of contractile speed and capacity to to generate force in old people was reflected in their inability to develop power during the performance of a maximal vertical jump and cycling.  相似文献

Maximal strength training has been reported to emphasize neural adaptations. The main objective of this study was to detect differences in muscle activation between 5, 10, and 20 repetition maximum (RM) sets. Fourteen subjects performed elbow flexion with 5, 10, and 20RM. Subjects were tested for maximum isometric force (maximal voluntary contraction [MVC]), twitch amplitude (peak twitch [Pt]), time to peak twitch (TPT), half relaxation time ((1/2) RT), electromyography (EMG), and muscle activation (interpolated twitch). Subjects were tested preexercise and 30 seconds, 1, 2, and 3 minutes postexercise. There were no significant differences in MVC, muscle activation, or antagonist/agonist EMG after 5, 10, or 20RM. However, greater RM did have a greater detrimental effect on twitch properties than fewer RM. Peak twitch was significantly (p = 0.004) less (32.08%) for the 20 than for the 5RM, whereas TPT shortened (p < 0.05) by 7.3 and 11.1% with 10 and 20RM vs. 5RM, respectively. Half relaxation time at 20RM was shortened (p < 0.05) by 20.6 and 25.4% compared with that at 5 and 10RM, respectively. MVC, muscle activation, and temporal twitch properties did not recover within 3 minutes of recovery. In conclusion, whereas 5RM did not produce greater muscle inactivation, twitch contractile properties were affected to a greater degree by a higher number of RM.  相似文献

The effects of aging on motoneuron firing rates and muscle contractile properties were studied in tibialis anterior muscle by comparing results from six young (20.8 +/- 0.8 yr) and six old men (82.0 +/- 1.7 yr). For each subject, data were collected from repeated tests over a 2-wk period. Contractile tests included maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with twitch interpolation and stimulated twitch contractions. The old men had 26% lower MVC torque (P < 0.01) than did the young men, but percent activation was not different (99.1 and 99.3%, respectively). Twitch contraction durations were 23% longer (P < 0.01) in the old compared with the young men. During a series of repeated brief steady-state contractions at 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100% MVC, motor unit firing rates were recorded. Results from approximately 950 motor unit trains in each subject group indicated that at all relative torque levels mean firing rates were 30-35% lower (P < 0.01) in the old subjects. Comparisons between young and old subjects' mean firing rates at each of 10%, 50%, and MVC torques and their corresponding mean twitch contraction duration yielded a range of moderate-to-high correlations (r = -0.67 to -0.84). That lower firing rates were matched to longer twitch contraction durations in the muscle of old men, and relatively higher firing rates were matched with shorter contraction times from the young men, indirectly supports the neuromuscular age-related remodeling principle.  相似文献

Variations in force and electromyographic (EMG) activities of skeletal muscles with the time-of-day have been previously described, but not for a postural muscle, submitted to daily postural and locomotor tasks. In this article, mechanical performances, EMGs, and the ratio between these parameters, i.e., the neuromuscular efficiency (NME), were measured on the triceps surae (TS) of eight subjects, two times each day, at 6:00 and 18:00 h. NME was evaluated under different experimental conditions (electrically induced contractions, reflex contractions, maximal and submaximal voluntary isometric contractions, and during a natural movement, a drop jump) to determine whether mechanisms, peripheral or central in origin, were responsible for the eventual changes in NME with time-of-day. To calculate NME in induced conditions (NMEind), a supramaximal electrical stimulus was applied to the tibial nerve, and the maximal M wave of TS (TS Mmax) and the amplitude of the twitch tension (PtMmax) in response to this electrical stimulation were quantified. TS Mmax was significantly lower in the evening (mean gain value -10.7 +/- 5.5%, p < 0.05), whereas PtMmax was not significantly modified. NMEind (PtMmax/TS Mmax) was significantly higher in the evening (mean gain of 17.6 +/- 5.8%, p < 0.05), and this increase was necessarily peripheral in origin. Secondly, maximal tendon taps were applied to the Achilles tendon in order to quantify at the two times-of-day the reflexes in response to a mechanical stimulus. The maximal reflex, TS Tmax/Mmax (%), the peak amplitude of the twitch tension associated to this tendon jerk (PtTmax), and the corresponding NME (NMEreflex = PtTmax/TS Tmax/Mmax) were not affected by time-of-day, indicating that reflex excitability did not present daytime variations when tested under these conditions. Voluntary isometric contractions were required under maximal (MVC) and submaximal (25% MVC) conditions, and the corresponding torques and TS EMG were measured. MVC was higher in the evening (mean gain: 8.6 +/- 2.7%, p < 0.05) and TS EMGmax (normalized with regard to TS Mmax) also increased in the evening but not significantly; thus, NMEMvc was not modified. At 25% of MVC, TS EMG was significantly higher in the evening (mean gain of 23 +/- 13.9%, p <0.05) and a trend for a lower NME25%MVC in the evening was observed, a result probably representative of a higher muscle fatigue state in the evening. Finally, to test the muscle capacities during a natural task, a NME index was calculated during a drop jump (DJ). The NMEDJ was defined as the ratio between jump height and mean amplitude of TS EMG (% of TS Mmax) between the drop and the jump. Both jump height and NMEDJ were significantly higher in the evening (mean gains of 10.9 +/- 4.5% and 15.7 +/- 7.4%, respectively, p <0.05). In conclusion, daytime changes in the efficiency of postural muscles seem to depend on both peripheral and central mechanisms. According to the experimental conditions, NME of the postural muscle could increase, remain constant, or even decrease in the evening, and this result may reflect reverse effects of better contractile capacities and higher fatigue state.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the potential strength, power, and anthropometric contributors to vertical jump performances that are considered specific to volleyball success: the spike jump (SPJ) and counter-movement vertical jump (CMVJ). To assess the relationship among strength, power, and anthropometric variables with CMVJ and SPJ, a correlation and regression analysis was performed. In addition, a comparison of strength, power, and anthropometric differences between the seven best subjects and the seven worst athletes on the CMVJ test and SPJ test was performed. When expressed as body mass relative measures, moderate correlations (0.53-0.65; p < or = 0.01) were observed between the 1RM measures and both relative CMVJ and relative SPJ. ABSTRACT: Kamandulis, S, Snieckus, A, Venckunas, T, Aagaard, P, Masiulis, N, and Skurvydas, A. Rapid increase in training load affects markers of skeletal muscle damage and mechanical performance. J Strength Cond Res 26(11): 2953-2961, 2012-The aim of this study was to monitor the changes in indirect markers of muscle damage during 3 weeks (9 training sessions) of stretch-shortening (drop jump) exercise with constant load alternated with steep increases in load. Physically active men (n = 9, mean age 19.1 years) performed a program involving a rapid stepwise increase in the number of jumps, drop height, and squat depth, and the addition of weight. Concentric, isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and stimulated knee extension torque were measured before and 10 minutes after each session. Muscle soreness and plasma creatine kinase activity were assessed after each session. Steep increments in stretch-shortening exercise load in sessions 4 and 7 amplified the postexercise decrease in stimulated muscle torque and slightly increased muscle soreness but had a minimal effect on the recovery of MVC and stimulated torque. Maximal jump height increased by 7.8 ± 6.3% (p < 0.05), 11.4 ± 3.3% (p < 0.05), and 12.8 ± 3.6% (p < 0.05) at 3, 10, and 17 days after the final training session, respectively. Gains in isometric knee extension MVC (7.9 ± 8.2%) and 100-Hz-evoked torque (9.9 ± 9.6%) (both p < 0.05) were observed within 17 days after the end of the training. The magnitude of improvement was greater after this protocol than that induced by a continuous constant progression loading pattern with small gradual load increments in each training session. These findings suggest that plyometric training using infrequent but steep increases in loading intensity and volume may be beneficial to athletic performance.  相似文献

Our purpose was to determine the effect of eight different combinations of contraction intensity, duration, and rest on the rate of fatigue in vastus lateralis muscle. A single combination consisted of contractions at 30 or 70% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), held for 3 or 7 s with 3- or 7-s rest intervals. Contractions were repeated until the subject could not hold the force for the requisite duration. At regular intervals during each experiment, a brief MVC, a single twitch, and the response to eight stimulation pulses at 50 Hz were elicited. The rate of fatigue was the rate of decline of MVC calculated from regression analysis. Mean rate of fatigue (n = 8) ranged from 0.3 to 25% MVC/min and was closely related (r = 0.98) to the product of the relative force and the duty cycle. Force from 50 Hz stimulation fell linearly and in parallel with MVC. Twitch force was first potentiated and then fell twice as fast as 50 Hz stimulation and MVC (p less than 0.05). Differentiated twitch contraction and relaxation rates were higher at potentiation and lower at the limit of endurance, compared with control values (p less than 0.05). The maximal electromyogram decreased 25% and the submaximal EMG increased to maximal by the end of the protocol, indicating that the entire motor unit pool had been recruited. The close relation between rate of fatigue and the force x time product probably reflects the off-setting interaction of contraction amplitude, duration, and rest interval. This occurs despite the changes in twitch characteristics and the apparent recruitment of fast fatiguing motor units.  相似文献

Postactivation potentiation (PAP), a mechanism by which the torque of a muscle twitch is increased following a conditioning contraction, is well documented in muscular physiology, but little is known about its effect on the maximal rate of torque development and functional significance during voluntary movements. The objective of this study was to investigate the PAP effect on the rate of isometric torque development of electrically induced and voluntary contractions. To that purpose, the electromechanical responses of the thumb adductor muscles to a single electrical stimulus (twitch), a train of 15 pulses at 250 Hz (HFT(250)), and during ballistic (i.e., rapid torque development) voluntary contractions at torque levels ranging from 10 to 75% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were recorded before and after a conditioning 6-s MVC. The results showed that the rate of torque development was significantly (P < 0.001) increased after the conditioning MVC, but the effect was greater for the twitch ( approximately 200%) compared with the HFT(250) ( approximately 17%) or ballistic contractions (range: 9-24%). Although twitch potentiation was maximal immediately after the conditioning MVC, maximal potentiation for HFT(250) and ballistic contractions was delayed to 1 min after the 6-s MVC. Furthermore, the similar degree of potentiation for the rate of isometric torque development between tetanic and voluntary ballistic contractions indicates that PAP is not related to the modality of muscle activation. These observations suggest that PAP may be considered as a mechanism that can influence our contractions during daily tasks and can be utilized to improve muscle performance in explosive sports.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the voluntary neural drive and the excitability of the reflex arc could be modulated by training, even in old age. To this aim, the effects of a 16-wk strengthening program on plantar flexor voluntary activation (VA) and on the maximum Hoffman reflex (H(max))-to-maximum M wave (M(max)) ratio were investigated in 14 elderly men (65-80 yr). After training, isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) increased by 18% (P < 0.05) and weight-lifting ability by 24% (P < 0.001). Twitch contraction time decreased by 8% (P < 0.01), but no changes in half relaxation time and in peak twitch torque were observed. The VA, assessed by twitch interpolation, increased from 95 to 98% (P < 0.05). Pretraining VA, also evaluated from the expected MVC for total twitch occlusion, was 7% higher (P < 0.01) than MVC. This discrepancy persisted after training. The interpolated twitch torque-voluntary torque relationship was fitted by a nonlinear model and was found to deviate from linearity for torque levels >65% MVC. Compared with younger men (24-35 yr), the H(max)- to M(max) ratio and nerve conduction velocity (H index) of the older group were significantly lower (42%, P < 0.05; and 29%, P < 0.001, respectively) and were not modulated by training. In conclusion, older men seem to preserve a high VA of plantar flexors. However, the impaired functionality of the reflex pathway with aging and the lack of modulation with exercise suggest that the decrease in the H(max)- to M(max) ratio and H index may be related to degenerative phenomena.  相似文献

Recently it was demonstrated that postactivation potentiation (PAP), which refers to the enhancement of the muscle twitch torque as a result of a prior conditioning contraction, increased the maximal rate of torque development of tetanic and voluntary isometric contractions (3). In this study, we investigated the effects of PAP and its decay over time on the load-velocity relation. To that purpose, angular velocity of thumb adduction in response to a single electrical stimulus (twitch), a high-frequency train of 15 pulses at 250 Hz (HFT(250)), and during ballistic voluntary shortening contractions, performed against loads ranging from 10 to 50% of the maximum torque, were recorded before and after a conditioning 6-s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The results showed an increase of the peak angular velocity for the different loads tested after the conditioning MVC (P < 0.001), but the effect was greatest for the twitch ( approximately 182%) compared with the HFT(250) or voluntary contractions ( approximately 14% for both contraction types). The maximal potentiation occurred immediately following the conditioning MVC for the twitch, whereas it was reached 1 min later for the tetanic and ballistic voluntary contractions. At that time, the load-velocity relation was significantly shifted upward, and the maximal power of the muscle was increased ( approximately 13%; P < 0.001). Furthermore, the results also indicated that the effect of PAP on shortening contractions was not related to the modality of muscle activation. The purposes of this study were to determine 1) the relationships of self-reported function scores in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) to both maximal isometric torque and to isotonic power at a variety of loads, and 2) the degree to which muscle volume (MV) or voluntary activation (VA) are associated with torque and power measures in this population. Isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque and isotonic power [performed at loads corresponding to 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% MVC, and a minimal load ("Zero Load")] were measured in 40 participants with knee OA. Functional ability was measured with the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) function subscale. MV was determined with magnetic resonance imaging, and VA was measured with the interpolated twitch technique. In general, power measured at lower loads (Zero Load and 10-30% MVC, r(2) = 0.21-0.28, P < 0.05) predicted a greater proportion of the variance in function than MVC torque (r(2) = 0.18, P < 0.05), with power measured at Zero Load showing the strongest association (r(2) = 0. 28, P < 0.05). MV was the strongest predictor of MVC torque and power measures in multiple regression models (r(2) = 0.42-0.72). VA explained only 6% of the variance in MVC torque and was not significantly associated with power at any load (P > 0.05). Quadriceps MVC torque and power are associated with self-reported function in knee OA, but muscle power at lower loads is more predictive of function than MVC torque. The variance in MVC torque and power between participants is due predominantly to differences in MV and has little to do with deficits in VA.  相似文献

The superimposed twitch technique is frequently used to study the degree of motor unit activation during voluntary effort. This technique is one of the preferred methods to determine the activation deficit (AD) in normal, athletic, and patient populations. One of the limitations of the superimposed twitch technique is its variability under given contractile conditions. The objective of this research was to determine the source(s) of variability in the superimposed twitch force (STF) for repeat measurements. We hypothesized that the variability in the AD measurements may be caused by the timing of the twitch force relative to the onset of muscle activation, by force transients during the twitch application, by small variations in the actual force from the nominal target force, and by variations in the resting twitch force. Twenty-eight healthy subjects participated in this study. Sixteen of these subjects participated in a protocol involving contractions at 50% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) effort, whereas the remaining 12 participated in a protocol involving contractions at 100% of their MVC. Doublet-twitch stimuli were superimposed onto the 50 and 100% effort knee extensor muscle contractions, and the resting twitch forces, voluntary knee extensor forces, and STFs were then measured. The mean resting twitch forces obtained before and after 8 s of 50% of MVC were the same. Similarly, the mean STFs determined at 1, 3, 5, and 7 s into the 50% MVC were the same. The variations in twitch force were significantly smaller after accounting for the actual force at twitch application than those calculated from the prescribed forces during the 50% MVC protocol (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the AD and the actual force showed statistically significant negative correlations for the 50% MVC tests. The interpolated twitch torque determined for the maximal effort contractions ranged from 1 to 70%. In contrast to the protocol at 50% of MVC, negative correlations were only observed in 5 of the 12 subjects during the 100% effort contractions. These results suggest that small variations in the actual force from the target force can account for the majority of the variations in the STFs for submaximal but not maximal effort contractions. For the maximal effort contractions, large variations in the STF exist due to undetermined causes.  相似文献

In small mammals, muscles with shorter twitch contraction times and a predominance of fast-twitch, type II fibers exhibit greater posttetanic twitch force potentiation than muscles with longer twitch contraction times and a predominance of slow-twitch, type I fibers. In humans, the correlation between potentiation and fiber-type distribution has not been found consistently. In the present study, postactivation potentiation (PAP) was induced in the knee extensors of 20 young men by a 10-s maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVC). Maximal twitch contractions of the knee extensors were evoked before and after the MVC. A negative correlation (r = -0. 73, P < 0.001) was found between PAP and pre-MVC twitch time to peak torque (TPT). The four men with the highest (HPAP, 104 +/- 11%) and lowest (LPAP, 43 +/- 7%) PAP values (P < 0.0001) underwent needle biopsies of vastus lateralis. HPAP had a greater percentage of type II fibers (72 +/- 9 vs. 39 +/- 7%, P < 0.001) and shorter pre-MVC twitch TPT (61 +/- 12 vs. 86 +/- 7 ms, P < 0.05) than LPAP. These data indicate that, similar to the muscles of small mammals, human muscles with shorter twitch contraction times and a higher percentage of type II fibers exhibit greater PAP.  相似文献
