Abstract.  1. The effects of human presence on the behavioural response and productivity of a native wasp species of North America ( Polistes fuscatus ) and an invasive wasp species ( Polistes dominulus ) were examined in a field experiment. Over a 3-month period, colonies of each species were exposed to human presence at either low (biweekly) or high (daily) levels. At 2-week intervals, wasp response to human presence was recorded for all colonies via an index, ranging from no response (0) to an attack (4).
2. The levels of human presence had no effect on wasp response or colony productivity but foundresses of both species increased their response level the closer a human was to the nest. In addition, foundresses of P. fuscatus became more aggressive over time, corresponding to after adult offspring emerged, whereas foundresses of P. dominulus did not change their response level after the emergence of offspring.
3. The adult offspring of P. dominulus responded to human presence at a level similar to that of the foundress, whereas adult offspring of P. fuscatus exhibited a lower response to human presence than that of the foundress. The more distinctive aposematic coloration of P. dominulus may play a role in the behavioural differences between species; it may be more effective in deterring predators, and with the result that leaving the nest to defend it is less often necessary. Accordingly, the less aggressive response to human presence by P. dominulus may contribute to its success as an introduced species in North America.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Colony productivity, prey utilisation, and foundress behaviour of a North American native wasp ( Polistes fuscatus ) versus an European invasive wasp ( Polistes dominulus ) were investigated in a controlled field experiment with optimal versus natural foraging conditions. Colonies with the optimal prey foraging conditions were provided with prey ad libitum within an enclosed area. The other colonies foraged in the adjacent field–woodland but had the same nest conditions as the other treatment.
2. When given prey ad libitum , both wasp species captured similar amounts of prey and the conversion to total offspring biomass was similar. But P. dominulus colonies produced 2.5 times the number of workers as P. fuscatus colonies, reflecting the smaller size of P. dominulus wasps.
3. Foundresses of P. dominulus were observed more often building or repairing the nest, thereby contributing to the production of colonies with twice as many cells as colonies of P. fuscatus . Foundresses of P. dominulus showed more acts of aggression toward workers than did P. fuscatus foundresses, which was not a function of adult density on the nest.
4. At the end of the experiment, P. dominulus colonies with optimal prey foraging conditions still had a high level of egg-laying and peaked in the number of pupae then, whereas egg-laying and the number of pupae per colony of the other treatments began to decline 2–3 weeks earlier. These results indicate that P. dominulus is more opportunistic than P. fuscatus , which may account in part for P. dominulus 's success as an introduced species in North America.  相似文献

Developmental studies of brain volumes can reveal which portions of neural circuits are sensitive to environmental inputs. In social insects, differences in relative investment across brain regions emerge as behavioural repertoires change during ontogeny or as a result of experience. Here, we test the effects of maturation and social experience on morphological brain development in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps, focusing on brain regions involved in visual and olfactory processing. We find that mature wasps regardless of social experience have relatively larger brains than newly emerged wasps and this difference is driven by changes to mushroom body calyx and visual regions but not olfactory processing neuropils. Notably, social wasps invest more in the anterior optic tubercle (AOT), a visual glomerulus involved in colour and object processing in other taxa, relative to other visual integration centres the mushroom body calyces compared with aged socially naive wasps. Differences in developmental plasticity between visual and olfactory neuropil volumes are discussed in light of behavioural maturation in paper wasps, especially as it relates to social recognition. Previous research has shown that P. fuscatus need social experience to develop specialized visual processing of faces, which is used to individually recognize conspecifics. The present study suggests that the AOT is a candidate brain region that could mediate facial processing in this species.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. To determine the effect of prey quantity and temperature on nest demography of social wasps ( Polistes fuscatus ), field experiments were conducted, in which wasps were provided with a low quantity of caterpillars (approximately nest subsistence level) or high quantity (three times as much). In addition, in the third year, the nest boxes were modified to be relatively cool (white and insulated) or warm (black).
2. In 1997 and 1998, high-food nests had a high proportion of cells containing developing offspring, produced more offspring, and had disproportionately more female offspring compared with low-food nests.
3. In 1999, the cool and warm nest boxes exhibited a daily average difference of 1.3 °C and a maximum difference of 6.9 °C. The warm high-food nests produced more offspring than any other treatment. The cool high-food nests produced similar numbers of offspring as the cool low-food and warm low-food treatments.
4. As indicated by a surplus of uncapped cells, foundresses of low-food nests, which would have had the egg-laying potential to produce many offspring, apparently sacrificed eggs to provide a food supplement for the developing offspring. This pattern plus more time observed foraging suggests considerable expenditure of energy by foundresses, in response to the low supply of food.
5. Importantly, these results indicate that an interactive effect of prey quantity and temperature on offspring production occurred, which may reflect the different effects on developmental rate and growth rate at cool versus warm nest temperatures.  相似文献

1. The simultaneous effects of prey quantity and prey quality on fitness correlates of the predatory wasp Polistes fuscatus were examined in a glasshouse study. Prey quantity was manipulated by providing prey in excess (high quantity) or one‐third of that (low quantity). Prey quality was manipulated by providing either palatable (Manduca sexta) caterpillars or unpalatable (Junonia coenia) caterpillars. 2. The effect of prey quality on wasp production depended on prey quantity. Nests given unpalatable prey produced few wasps whereas nests given palatable prey increased wasp production with increased prey. 3. The low production of nests given unpalatable prey reflected the low acceptability of those prey. The wasps preferred the palatable prey and learned to reject the unpalatable prey. With no choice of prey, they took only enough unpalatable prey to develop a small nest or colony. 4. A diet of unpalatable prey also resulted in smaller wasps and reduced the proportion of males produced, from about 40% to just 8–14%, depending on the year.  相似文献

In recent years several studies regarding possible effects of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on cognitive brain function were reported. In many of these studies on awake humans the working tasks were presented visually to the test subjects, e.g., on a computer screen. Therefore, the question of where in the chain of visual perception, brain processing and response a possible effect could be induced seems to be of interest. In this study, possible effects of exposure to a generic 1.97 GHz UMTS-like signal on human visual perception were investigated in a double blinded, crossover study including 58 healthy volunteer subjects (29 male, 29 female), aged 29 +/- 5.1 years (mean +/- SD). Each test subject underwent a battery of four different clinical tests three times (two different exposure levels and sham exposure) to assess selected parameters of visual perception. The generic signals applied to the subjects' head represented the RF emissions of an UMTS mobile phone under constant receiving conditions and the under condition of strongly varying transmit power, i.e., the signal envelope contained low frequency components. In the high exposure condition the resulting average exposure of the test subjects in the cortex of the left temporal lobe of the brain was 0.63 W/kg (1 g averaged SAR) and 0.37 W/kg (10 g averaged SAR). Low exposure condition was one tenth of high exposure and sham was at least 50 dB (corresponding to a factor of 100,000) below low exposure. Statistical evaluation of the obtained test results revealed no statistically significant differences in the investigated parameters of visual perception between the exposure conditions and sham exposure.  相似文献

约马蜂PolistesjokanamaeRadoszkowski是一种习见的社会性天敌昆虫。研究表明约马蜂在闽东地区于4月中旬觅址筑巢,历经40d建成31~40个巢房的小巢。约马蜂1年发生2代,第1代蜂于5月下旬开始羽化,7月初蜂巢拥有职蜂可达30只,每只职蜂日均外勤达14次,群体进入快速增长期;第2代蜂8~9月间出现,雄蜂所占比例超过1/3,群体进入鼎盛期。第2代雌蜂与雄蜂交尾后于11月陆续离巢越冬。幼体发育历期28~37d,与外界气温密切相关,随温度升高而缩短。文中还提出计算幼体发育历期的方法。  相似文献

Concepts act as a cornerstone of human cognition. Humans and non-human primates learn conceptual relationships such as ‘same’, ‘different’, ‘larger than’, ‘better than’, among others. In all cases, the relationships have to be encoded by the brain independently of the physical nature of objects linked by the relation. Consequently, concepts are associated with high levels of cognitive sophistication and are not expected in an insect brain. Yet, various works have shown that the miniature brain of honeybees rapidly learns conceptual relationships involving visual stimuli. Concepts such as ‘same’, ‘different’, ‘above/below of’ or ‘left/right are well mastered by bees. We review here evidence about concept learning in honeybees and discuss both its potential adaptive advantage and its possible neural substrates. The results reviewed here challenge the traditional view attributing supremacy to larger brains when it comes to the elaboration of concepts and have wide implications for understanding how brains can form conceptual relations.  相似文献

The effect of prey quality on foraging behavior and colony demographics of the social wasp Polistes fuscatus was examined by providing a choice between non‐toxic prey (Manduca sexta caterpillars) and sublethally toxic prey (Junonia coenia caterpillars), and then comparing the performance of these colonies to others given only the non‐toxic prey. In the choice, one of two types of Manduca were used: those fed an artificial diet or those fed plantain (Plantago lanceolata), which contains iridoid glycosides (IGs) that Junonia coenia store but which Manduca does not. Despite the negative correlation between the number of Junonia prey used and number of adult offspring produced, when a surplus of non‐toxic prey was available, the wasps did not completely avoid the toxic prey. However, they were more discriminating when the choice was between Manduca fed an artificial diet and Junonia fed plantain vs. when both prey species had eaten the plantain. Because the wasps had a choice of prey types and had a surplus of prey on about one‐third of the days, the wasps were able to take enough non‐toxic prey to avoid some of the negative consequences of IGs. For example, the total number of wasp offspring per nest was not affected, but mean weight of female offspring per colony was less for colonies given both prey types eating plantain, compared to that for colonies fed only non‐toxic prey, or those given a choice of non‐toxic prey vs. toxic prey. In addition, compared to the control (only non‐toxic prey), the proportion of males produced was less in the treatment that provided a clear contrast between non‐toxic and toxic prey. Why these wasps did not avoid the toxic prey is discussed.  相似文献

In the present study we firstly described the behavioural alarm pattern shown by the paper wasp Polistes dominulus once disturbed. Then we investigated through laboratory experiments how wasps defend the colony in response to visual and vibrational stimulations. Our results show that the wasps exhibit a stereotyped series of behaviours, known as warning behaviours, that follow a precise sequence. Afterwards the combination of visual and vibrational stimuli induces a higher number of wasps to attack the source of disturbance and diminishes the time needed by the wasps to react to an external intruder compared to the visual stimulation, alone.  相似文献

A two-alternative forced-choice discrimination task was used to assess whether baboons (N=7) spontaneously process qualitative (i.e., first-order) or quantitative (i.e., second-order) variations in the configural arrangement of facial features. Experiment 1 used as test stimuli second-order pictorial faces of humans or baboons in which the mouth and the eyes were rotated upside down relative to the normal face. Baboons readily discriminated two different normal faces but did not discriminate a normal face from its second-order modified version. Experiment 2 used human or baboon faces for which the first-order configural properties had been distorted by reversing the location of the eyes and mouth within the face. Discrimination was prompt with these stimuli. Experiment 3 replicated some of the conditions and the results of experiment 1, thus ruling out possible effects of learning. It is concluded that baboons are more adept at spontaneously processing first- than second-order configural facial properties, similar to what is known in the human developmental literature.  相似文献

The lateral protocerebrum of the fly's brain is composed of a system of optic glomeruli, the organization of which compares to that of antennal lobe glomeruli. Each optic glomerulus receives converging axon terminals from a unique ensemble of optic lobe output neurons. Glomeruli are interconnected by systems of spiking and nonspiking local interneurons that are morphologically similar to diffuse and polarized local interneurons in the antennal lobes. GABA-like immunoreactive processes richly supply optic glomeruli, which are also invaded by processes originating from the midbrain and subesophageal ganglia. These arrangements support the suggestion that circuits amongst optic glomeruli refine and elaborate visual information carried by optic lobe outputs, relaying data to long-axoned neurons that extend to other parts of the central nervous system including thoracic ganglia. The representation in optic glomeruli of other modalities suggests that gating of visual information by other sensory inputs, a phenomenon documented from the recordings of descending neurons, could occur before the descending neuron dendrites. The present results demonstrate that future studies must consider the roles of other senses in visual processing.  相似文献

Humans use shading as a cue to three-dimensional form by combining low-level information about light intensity with high-level knowledge about objects and the environment. Here, we examine how cuttlefish Sepia officinalis respond to light and shadow to shade the white square (WS) feature in their body pattern. Cuttlefish display the WS in the presence of pebble-like objects, and they can shade it to render the appearance of surface curvature to a human observer, which might benefit camouflage. Here we test how they colour the WS on visual backgrounds containing two-dimensional circular stimuli, some of which were shaded to suggest surface curvature, whereas others were uniformly coloured or divided into dark and light semicircles. WS shading, measured by lateral asymmetry, was greatest when the animal rested on a background of shaded circles and three-dimensional hemispheres, and less on plain white circles or black/white semicircles. In addition, shading was enhanced when light fell from the lighter side of the shaded stimulus, as expected for real convex surfaces. Thus, the cuttlefish acts as if it perceives surface curvature from shading, and takes account of the direction of illumination. However, the direction of WS shading is insensitive to the directions of background shading and illumination; instead the cuttlefish tend to turn to face the light source.  相似文献

Mammals have adapted to a variety of natural environments from underwater to aerial and these different adaptations have affected their specific perceptive and cognitive abilities. This study used a computer-controlled touchscreen system to examine the visual discrimination abilities of horses, particularly regarding size and shape, and compared the results with those from chimpanzee, human and dolphin studies. Horses were able to discriminate a difference of 14% in circle size but showed worse discrimination thresholds than chimpanzees and humans; these differences cannot be explained by visual acuity. Furthermore, the present findings indicate that all species use length cues rather than area cues to discriminate size. In terms of shape discrimination, horses exhibited perceptual similarities among shapes with curvatures, vertical/horizontal lines and diagonal lines, and the relative contributions of each feature to perceptual similarity in horses differed from those for chimpanzees, humans and dolphins. Horses pay more attention to local components than to global shapes.  相似文献

When small flying insects go off their intended course, they use the resulting pattern of motion on their eye, or optic flow, to guide corrective steering. A change in heading generates a unique, rotational motion pattern and a change in position generates a translational motion pattern, and each produces corrective responses in the wingbeats. Any image in the flow field can signal rotation, but owing to parallax, only the images of nearby objects can signal translation. Insects that fly near the ground might therefore respond more strongly to translational optic flow that occurs beneath them, as the nearby ground will produce strong optic flow. In these experiments, rigidly tethered fruitflies steered in response to computer-generated flow fields. When correcting for unintended rotations, flies weight the motion in their upper and lower visual fields equally. However, when correcting for unintended translations, flies weight the motion in the lower visual fields more strongly. These results are consistent with the interpretation that fruitflies stabilize by attending to visual areas likely to contain the strongest signals during natural flight conditions.  相似文献

The ability of two species of Polistes wasps to distinguish their own from nearby nests was tested, following the procedure used by Espelie et al. Our experiments demonstrated that, in the laboratory, females of Polistes dominulus and Polistes nimphus preferentially selected their own nests rather than nearby nests. We also evaluated the role of odor cues in nest recognition by washing nests in hexane to remove the apolar solvent-soluble components of nest odor. Although P. nimphus females continued to discriminate nests even after washing, P. dominulus individuals failed to discriminate between their own and a foreign neighboring nest. In both species, wasps were able to recognize their own nests when nest extracts were subsequently reapplied to the nest surface. These results indicate that P. dominulus wasps recognize their nests through perception of nest odor. Worker reproduction and worker mating were compared between two temperate paper wasp species Polistes chinensis and P. snelleni in central Japan, by dissecting females. As a whole, potential egg-layers (worker reproductives) constituted 14.7% of 273 workers from queen-right colonies and 26.0% of 254 from orphaned colonies in P. chinensis. In P. snelleni, potential egg-layers constituted 8.1% of 307 workers from queen-right colonies and 11.6% of 337 from orphaned colonies. The numbers and proportions of potential egg-layers per colony were also larger in P. chinensis than in P. snelleni. Despite the presence of more potential egg-layers, there were no inseminated workers in P. chinensis colonies. By contrast, in P. snelleni 8.5 and 18.1% of all workers were inseminated in queenright and orphaned colonies, respectively. The differences between the worker characteristics of the two species were investigated and were concluded to be mainly due to differences in the production schedules of new reproductive females (new queens) and males by the foundress queens.  相似文献

In vertebrates, and in humans in particular, so-called omitted stimulus potentials can be electrically recorded from the brain or scalp upon repeated stimulation with simple stimuli such as light flashes.While standard evoked potentials follow each stimulus in a series, omitted stimulus potentials occur when an additional stimulus is expected after the end of a stimulus series. These potentials represent neuronal plasticity and are assumed to be involved in basic cognitive processes.We recorded electroretinograms from the eyes and visually evoked potentials from central brain areas of honey bees and ants, social insects to which cognitive abilities have been ascribed and whose rich-behavioral repertoires include navigation, learning and memory.We demonstrate that omitted stimulus potentials occur in these insects. Omitted stimulus potentials in bees and ants show similar temporal characteristics to those found in crayfish and vertebrates, suggesting that common mechanisms may underlie this form of short-term neuronal plasticity.  相似文献

We developed 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the Japanese paper wasp Polistes rothneyi using the magnetic particle method. Eight of the 10 loci tested were highly polymorphic, having four to eight alleles in P. rothneyi with an expected heterozygosity of 0.60–0.75. They also appeared to be applicable to other related species such as Polistes jokahamae. These loci can be used to study parameters concerning genetic relatedness such as worker reproduction and kin structure.  相似文献
