As the receiver of photoperiodic responses of plants is the phytochrome, it may be concluded that these responses are controlled also by the spectral composition of natural radiation, especially by the red and far red bands. The red radiation is affected by ozone Chappuis-band absorption, the far red by water vapor in the atmosphere alpha-band absorption. Using a rapid-scanning spectroradiometer, the measurements of the natural radiation were performed. The evident annual cycle of far red to red radiation ratio was found. The ratio has its maximum in the spring and minimum in the late summer and autumn. It seems to be probable that this cycle assists plants in making a distinction between spring and autumn.Presented at the Eighth International Congress of Biometeorology, 9–14 September 1979, Shefayim, Israel.  相似文献

Antioxidant effect of red wine polyphenols on red blood cells   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The protective effect of red wine polyphenols against hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-induced oxidation was investigated in normal human erythrocytes (RBCs). RBCs, preincubated with micromolar amounts of wine extract and challenged with H(2)O(2), were analyzed for reactive oxygen species (ROS), hemolysis, methemoglobin production, and lipid peroxidation. All these oxidative modifications were prevented by incubating the RBCs with oak barrel aged red wine extract (SD95) containing 3.5 mM gallic acid equivalent (GAE) of phenolic compounds. The protective effect was less apparent when RBCs were incubated with wines containing lower levels of polyphenols. Furthermore, resveratrol and quercetin, well known red wine antioxidants, showed lower antioxidant properties compared with SD95, indicating that interaction between constituents may bring about effects that are not necessarily properties of the singular components. Our findings demonstrate that the nonalcoholic components of red wine, mainly polyphenols, have potent antioxidant properties, supporting the hypothesis of a beneficial effect of red wine in oxidative stress in human system.  相似文献

Red cells are replaced before they become senescent. It is probable that red cell destruction is controlled by a biologic clock, essentially independent of metabolism, rather than by metabolic failure. Sexual selection theory proposes correlated evolutionary changes in mating preferences and secondary sexual characters based on a positive genetic correlation between preference and the preferred trait. Empirical work has provided support for a genetic covariation between female preference and male attractiveness in several taxa. Here, we study parent and offspring visual traits in threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus. While focusing on the proximate basis of mating preferences, we compare the red breeding coloration of males, which strongly contributes to female choice, with their daughters' red sensitivity measured by optomotor response thresholds. We show that the red color expression of fathers correlates well with their daughters' red sensitivity. Given that a within-population genetic correlation between signal and preference was experimentally confirmed for the red coloration in sticklebacks, our results indicate a proximate mechanism in terms of perceptual sensitivity being involved in the co-evolution of female preferences and male mating signals.  相似文献

Corn ( Zea mays L. cv . OP Golden Bantum) was grown under various low irradiances of red light (Pfr/Ptot∼ 0.8) and under high irradiance far-red light containing low amounts of red light (Pfr/Ptot∼ 0.05–0.15). Parameters of chloroplast development such as pigments, membrane polypeptides and infrastructure were compared among the various light sources. Results indicate that the requirement for phytochrome is saturated at low ratios of Pfr/Ptot (<5% Pfr). When the phytochrome requirement is saturated, pigment synthesis assumes major importance and chloroplasi development is directly related to red light irradiance.  相似文献

The carotenoid composition of the following 8 species of red algae has been studied quantitatively and qualitatively: Bangia fuscopurpurea, Nemalion helminthoides, Bonnemaisonia hamifera (tetrasporophyte), Gigartina stellata, Rhodymenia palmata, Ceramium rubrum, Polysiphonia brodiaei, and Polysiphonia urceolata. Naturally occurring material of G. stellata, R. palmata, and P. brodiaei was investigated, while monoalgally cultured material was obtained from the remaining 5 species. α- and β-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and small amounts of α- or β-cryptoxanthin were commonly present, but the two species P. brodiaei and P. urceolata were devoid of carotenoids containing α-ionone rings. Fucoxanthin was detected in naturally occurring material of B. fuscopurpurea, N. helminthoides, C. rubrum, and P. brodiaei, but could not be found in cultured material of the 3 first-mentioned species. The possible origin of the fucoxanthin is discussed as well as the biochemical and phylogenetic implications of the results obtained. As judged from the electronic spectrum of the total extracts, chlorophyll d was not present in any of the algae investigated. The total amounts of carotenoids and the ratio carotenoids: chlorophyll a were similar to those reported in previous work.  相似文献

Acetyltransferase was isolated by histone-Sepharose affinity chromatography from human cord blood red cells. The enzyme was detected only in very young red cells. The semipurified enzyme and [14C]acetyl-CoA were used to acetylate isolated Hb F tetramer and alpha and gamma subunits. The in vitro acetylated products were characterized by globin chain separation by CM-cellulose chromatography and tryptic peptide analysis by reverse-phase HPLC. Acetylation of both the gamma-chains and the alpha-chains could occur within the Hb F tetramer. Acetylation also could take place on intact subunits. It appears that some Hb FIC could be formed in the cells by utilizing Hb F or free gamma-chains as acetylation substrate.  相似文献
