Climatic chamber experiments were carried out on young, healthy male students. The ambient temperature was 36 degrees C, while local warming of one extremity was compensated for by heatflow-equivalent cooling of the ipsilateral extremity by on-line calculation of the heat balance. When warming the arm and cooling the leg (type 1 experiments), a slight, but not statistically significant increase of local sweat rates at these extremities was recorded. However, when cooling the arm and warming the leg (type 2 experiments), both corresponding local sweat rates declined. The divergent results are interpreted in terms of previously reported different central weighting factors for skin temperatures as determined: (1) by the weighting for the area, or (2) by the weighting for the area and the sensitivity of the local sweat rate to warming and cooling. This means that the central processing of the mean skin temperature may be different for cooling and warming and that in both cases values can be different from recorded (area weighted) skin temperature. Calculating this modified mean skin temperature, we conclude that type 1 experiments may be interpreted by the hypothesis that the central regulator has a status very near an overall heat-balance, whereas type 2 experiments, although also carried out at heat-balance, may be centrally evaluated as predominant cooling. In these experiments again the central drives representing the whole body thermal state seem to override both the direct and centrally mediated local drives.  相似文献

The actual evidence observed in studies of LEK (local environmental knowledge) is nearly always talk about the environment, or what we refer to as LET (local environmental talk), with the claim of studying LEK usually being built upon the implicit assumption that talk about the environment is the expression of knowledge about the environment. We suggest that it is critically important for researchers to question this assumption, especially when the distinction between LET and LEK is also emphasized by local people themselves. In the case we present here, residents of small fishing villages on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland are routinely skeptical about what other local residents say about the environment; that is, they engage in LES (local environmental skepticism). We suggest that paying explicit attention to LES can help distinguish LEK from LET.  相似文献

Expressions for the local electron affinity, electronegativity and hardness are derived in analogy to the local ionization energy introduced by Sjoberg, Murray and Politzer. The local polarizability is also defined based on an additive atomic orbital polarizability model that uses Rivail's variational technique. The characteristics of these local properties at molecular surfaces and their relevance to electrophilic aromatic substitution, to SN2 reactivity and to the nucleophilicity of enolate ions are discussed.Figure The local ionization energy at the SES surfaces of methyl benzoate. The color scale ranges from 375 (blue) to 550 kcal mol–1 (red). The blue areas are those for which interaction with an acceptor is most favorable.  相似文献

Local cerebral glucose metabolism (LCMRglc) and local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) were studied following implantation of a microdialysis fiber in rat dorsal hippocampus. Recovery time after implantation varied from 0 to 24 h. All rats showed pronounced disturbances in LCMRglc and LCBF during the first 2 h of implantation. The changes consisted of (a) a general decrease in blood flow and glucose phosphorylation and (b) small areas (spots) around the fiber with increased glucose phosphorylation and decreased blood flow. Animals allowed to recover for 24 h demonstrated a near normalization of LCMRglu and LCBF, and the focal disturbances (spots) of glucose phosphorylation and blood flow disappeared. The slight reduction in blood flow and glucose metabolism at this time must be accepted, because extension of the recovery period beyond 24 h may give interpretation problems due to the developing gliosis.  相似文献

To theoretically investigate the single and compound effects of relative fecundity and relative stature of plants on size-dependent sex allocation (SDS) in wind-pollinated cosexual species, we developed a game model and analysed ESS sex allocation of large and small plants having totally or partially different reproductive resources and different pollen and seed dispersal areas in a population. We found that e.g. when both sized plants have large pollen dispersal areas relative to their seed dispersal areas, which plants are male-biased is largely determined by relative fecundity (t) and relative size of seed dispersal area (k) of the large plants to the small plants: If t >k, large plants tend to be more male-biased even if relative size of pollen dispersal area of large to small plants (l) is smaller than k. Local dynamic stability has been assessed by the short-term local divergence exponent (λS), which quantifies the average rate of logarithmic divergence of infinitesimally close trajectories in state space. Both increased and decreased local dynamic stability at faster walking speeds have been reported. This might pertain to methodological differences in calculating λS. Therefore, the aim was to test if different calculation methods would induce different effects of walking speed on local dynamic stability. Ten young healthy participants walked on a treadmill at five speeds (60%, 80%, 100%, 120% and 140% of preferred walking speed) for 3 min each, while upper body accelerations in three directions were sampled. From these time-series, λS was calculated by three different methods using: (a) a fixed time interval and expressed as logarithmic divergence per stride-time (λSa), (b) a fixed number of strides and expressed as logarithmic divergence per time (λSb) and (c) a fixed number of strides and expressed as logarithmic divergence per stride-time (λSc). Mean preferred walking speed was 1.16±0.09 m/s. There was only a minor effect of walking speed on λSa. λSb increased with increasing walking speed indicating decreased local dynamic stability at faster walking speeds, whereas λSc decreased with increasing walking speed indicating increased local dynamic stability at faster walking speeds. Thus, the effect of walking speed on calculated local dynamic stability was significantly different between methods used to calculate local dynamic stability. Therefore, inferences and comparisons of studies employing λS should be made with careful consideration of the calculation method.  相似文献

Now it is better understood that some areas managed by small farmers contain almost as much biodiversity as the wild. Background: Analyzing MR scans of low-grade glioma, with highly accurate segmentation will have an enormous potential in neurosurgery for diagnosis and therapy planning. Low-grade gliomas are mainly distinguished by their infiltrating character and irregular contours, which make the analysis, and therefore the segmentation task, more difficult. Moreover, MRI images show some constraints such as intensity variation and the presence of noise.Methods: To tackle these issues, a novel segmentation method built from the local properties of image is presented in this paper. Phase-based edge detection is estimated locally by the monogenic signal using quadrature filters. This way of detecting edges is, from a theoretical point of view, intensity invariant and responds well to the MR images. To strengthen the tumor detection process, a region-based term is designated locally in order to achieve a local maximum likelihood segmentation of the region of interest. A Gaussian probability distribution is considered to model local images intensities.Results: The proposed model is evaluated using a set of real subjects and synthetic images derived from the Brain Tumor Segmentation challenge –BraTS 2015. In addition, the obtained results are compared to the manual segmentation performed by two experts. Quantitative evaluations are performed using the proposed approach with regard to four related existing methods.Conclusion: The comparison of the proposed method, shows more accurate results than the four existing methods.  相似文献

Helminth parasites of teleost fish have evolved strategies to evade and manipulate the immune responses of their hosts. Responsiveness of fish host immunity to helminth antigens may therefore vary depending on the degree of host-parasite counter-adaptation. Generalist parasites, infective for a number of host species, might be unable to adapt optimally to the immune system of a certain host species, while specialist parasites might display high levels of adaptation to a particular host species. The degree of adaptations may further differ between sympatric and allopatric host-parasite combinations. Here, we test these hypotheses by in vitro exposure of head kidney leukocytes from three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to antigens from parasites with a broad fish host range (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, Triaenophorus nodulosus), a specific fish parasite of cyprinids (Ligula intestinalis) and parasites highly specific only to a single fish species as second intermediate host (Schistocephalus pungitii, which does not infect G. aculeatus, and Schistocephalus solidus, infecting G. aculeatus). In vitro responses of stickleback leukocytes to S. solidus antigens from six European populations, with S. solidus prevalence from <1% to 66% were tested in a fully crossed experimental design. Leukocyte cultures were analysed by means of flow cytometry and a chemiluminescence assay to quantify respiratory burst activity. We detected decreasing magnitudes of in vitro responses to antigens from generalist to specialist parasites and among specialists, from parasites that do not infect G. aculeatus to a G. aculeatus-infecting species. Generalist parasites seem to maintain their ability to infect different host species at the costs of relatively higher immunogenicity compared to specialist parasites. In a comparison of sympatric and allopatric combinations of stickleback leukocytes and antigens from S. solidus, magnitudes of in vitro responses were dependent on the prevalence of the parasite in the population of origin, rather than on sympatry. Antigens from Norwegian (prevalence 30–50%) and Spanish (40–66%) S. solidus induced generally higher in vitro responses compared to S. solidus from two German (<1%) populations. Likewise, leukocytes from stickleback populations with a high S. solidus prevalence showed higher in vitro responses to S. solidus antigens compared to populations with low S. solidus prevalence. This suggests a rather low degree of local adaptation in S. solidus populations, which might be due to high gene flow among populations because of their extremely mobile final hosts, fish-eating birds.  相似文献

Quercus has been reported as the genus with the largest number of attacking powdery mildews. In Europe, oak powdery mildew was rarely reported before 1907, when severe outbreaks were observed. These epidemics were attributed to the newly described species Erysiphe alphitoides, presumed to be of exotic origin. After the burst of interest following the emergence of the disease, research on this topic remained very limited. Interest in research was recently reactivated in response to the availability of molecular tools. This review summarizes current knowledge on the diversity of oak powdery mildews in Europe and their possible evolutionary relationships with European oaks. The most striking results are the evidence of cryptic diversity (detection in France of a lineage closely related to Erysiphe quercicola, previously thought to only have an Asian distribution), large host range (similarity of E. alphitoides and E. quercicola with powdery mildews of tropical plants) but also local adaptation to Quercus robur. These recent findings highlight the complexity of the history of oak powdery mildew in Europe and point to the question of host specialization and host jumps in the evolution of powdery mildew fungi.  相似文献

To demonstrate whether or not the skin temperature of one lower limb can have an influence on the sweat rate of the contralateral leg, the two legs of five subjects were exposed inside leg-chambers to specific local thermal conditions while sweat rates were measured on both limbs. Three experiments (C I,II,III) of 3 h were carried out: each included two phases A and B. During A, the right leg was not ventilated, while the left leg was (C I) or was not (C II–III) ventilated. During B, the legs were either removed from the leg-chambers (C I) or ventilated inside the chambers at differently controlled levels of leg skin temperature (C II–III). At all times, sweat capsules on both legs measured the sweat rates of local areas of the thigh which were also temperature-controlled. Results showed that, at constant or slightly increased mean skin and core temperatures, the sweat output of one leg could be decreased at constant (C II) or higher local skin temperature (C III) probably due to a decrease in the temperature of the opposite leg. This finding is interpreted as a consequence of a central negative effect, originating from contralateral thermal inputs.  相似文献

To extend our recent paper dealing with the cable properties and the conduction velocity of nonmyelinated nerve fibers (Bull. Math. Biol. 64, 1069; 2002), the behavior of the local current associated with the rising phase of a propagating action potential is discussed. It is shown that the process of charging the membrane capacity by means of the local current plays a crucial role in determining the velocity of nerve conduction. The symmetry of the local current with respect to the boundary between the resting and active regions of the nerve fiber is emphasized. It is noted that there are several simple quantitative rules governing the intensities of the capacitive, resistive and total membrane currents observed during the rising phase of an action potential.  相似文献

Local villagers have important effect on the biodiversity in the nature reserve as they take advantage of the source for hundreds of years. Baka, a Jinuo village was studies with market investigation and questionnaire, especially focused on the bene-fits and costs that risen from nature reserve. It is found that the local people get a large number of income from nature reserve, at the same time, local people lost opportunity costs for lost land where is turned to nature reserve. Species’ presence/absence at two time points is a very common form of ecological data. It is the simplest type of longitudinal study and has fundamental applications in ecological succession, environmental monitoring, and climate change scenarios. Despite its widespread commonality the use of statistical regression to analyse such data has been wanting. We propose the use of the bivariate odds-ratio model to analyse these data. Seldomly used in ecology, it is argued as being suitable, especially within a constrained ordination framework. In particular, this paper presents the constrained ordination-odds ratio framework as a potentially important key in understanding the underlying processes of niche theory dynamics, e.g., local extinction and colonization probabilities can be described in terms of it. Some of the mathematical and statistical challenges associated with more ambitious extensions are highlighted. As examples, with an underlying Poisson abundance model, a complementary log-log link for the marginal probabilities is shown to be more appropriate. We then develop this model based on the zero-inflated Poisson distribution since excess absences relative to a Poisson distribution is frequent in practice. Two vegetation data sets are used for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Chicken tibiae were chosen as a model for human second metatarsals. Local surface bone deformation in a 4-point bending configuration was measured in vitro by both strain gauge instrumented staples and strain gauges bonded to the bone's cortical surface. A series of staple bridge dimensions (0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm) was compared to test for staple influence on bone characteristics and greatest measurement validity and reliability. Thicker staple inhibition of bone deformation was the greatest but differences to thinner staples were not statistically significant (p>0.05). All staples except 0.5 mm had maximum deviations from linearity less than 1%. The 1.0 mm staple had an R2 value of 0.992±0.006 plotted against the 4-point bending input force and 0.994±0.002 plotted against the surface strain gauge signal. The mean intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) calculated with four input forces (30, 60, 90 and 120 N) and for loading and unloading conditions for the 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm staples were 0.75, 0.83, 0.87 and 0.92, respectively. Finally, the differences in slope of the staple strain gauge signal plotted against surface strain gauge signal between input force loading and unloading conditions (0.32), and between input compression and tension conditions (0.79) was least for the 1.0 mm staple which also resulted in the lowest standard deviations. These results suggested the appropriateness of the 1.0 mm staple for in vivo application.  相似文献

Abstract The one-to-one correspondence of whiskers to barrels in layer IV of rodent somatosensory cortex can be demonstrated by a precise match between columns of heavy 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) label in layer IV barrels and other layers which correspond to stimulated whiskers. While there is specificity of peripheral-to-central mapping, the extent to which integration and/or modulation are generated by circuitry within or interactions between the barrel-defined whisker columns is not clear. Following stimulation of selected whiskers, large cells at the layer IV-V boundary throughout the barrel field are heavily labeled by 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) at high resolution. Many of these cells are outside the barrel columns of the stimulated whiskers. Further, the number of cells labeled is not directly related to the number of activated barrel columns. These neurons are not labeled in animals anesthetized before 2DG injection and are not as heavily labeled in barrel fields of somnolent animals. Most of the heavily labeled neurons immunolabel for glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and are presumed to be inhibitory, while a smaller number of labeled neurons, presumed to be excitatory, immunolabel for glutamate (Glu). Similar populations of large, heavily 2DG-labeled neurons are found in other cortical areas. These relatively few neurons are exceptionally active and may modulate integrative functions of cerebral cortex.  相似文献

Summary The study of dependence between random variables is a mainstay in statistics. In many cases, the strength of dependence between two or more random variables varies according to the values of a measured covariate. We propose inference for this type of variation using a conditional copula model where the copula function belongs to a parametric copula family and the copula parameter varies with the covariate. In order to estimate the functional relationship between the copula parameter and the covariate, we propose a nonparametric approach based on local likelihood. Of importance is also the choice of the copula family that best represents a given set of data. The proposed framework naturally leads to a novel copula selection method based on cross‐validated prediction errors. We derive the asymptotic bias and variance of the resulting local polynomial estimator, and outline how to construct pointwise confidence intervals. The finite‐sample performance of our method is investigated using simulation studies and is illustrated using a subset of the Matched Multiple Birth data.  相似文献
