We report 21 new polymorphic microsatellite markers in the European barn owl (Tyto alba). The polymorphism of the reported markers was evaluated in a population situated in western Switzerland and in another from Tenerife, Canary Islands. The number of alleles per locus varies between two and 31, and expected heterozygosity per population ranges from 0.16 to 0.95. All loci are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and no linkage disequilibrium was detected. Two loci exhibit a null allele in the Tenerife population.  相似文献

Registramos la reproducción de tres especies de las lagartijas de México (Xenosaurus grandis, X. newmanorum, y X. platyceps; Xenosauridae) para investigar si ellas comparte las características reproductivas de otras especies de morfología aplanada. El tamaño de puesta difirio entre las tres especies, pero la diferencias no podrían ser explicadas por las diferencias en tamaño corporal. El tamaño de la puesta estuvo influenciado por el tamaño de la hembra únicamente en X. grandis. La reproducción en X. grandis y X. newmanorum es estacional, con la copula ocurriendo aparentemente en el oto¤o y la gestacón durando entre 9 y 10 meses. Las hembras de X. grandis aparentemente se reproducen cada do años, mientras que las hembras de X. newmanorum y X. platyceps se reproducen cada año. Nuestras evidencias sugieren que la morfología aplanada no ha resultado en una limitación sobre el tamaño de la puesta en Xenosaurus, como esta lo ha sido para otras especies de lagartijas que viven en comisuras de roca. Sin embargo, la variación en la reproduccón entre especies de Xenosaurus permanece sin ser explicada. We recorded reproductive parameters of three species of lizard from Mexico (Xenosaurus grandis, X. newmanorum, and X. platyceps; Xenosauridae) to investigate if they share the reproductive characteristics of other species with flattened morphology. Litter sizes differed among the three species, but the differences could not be explained by differences in body size. Litter size was influenced by female body size only in X. grandis. Reproduction in X. grandis and X. newmanorum is seasonal, with mating apparently occurring in the fall and gestation lasting 9-10 months. Xenosaurus grandis females apparently reproduce every other year, whereas X. newmanorum and X. platyceps females reproduce every year. Our evidence suggests that the flattened morphology has not led to constraints on litter size in Xenosaurus as it has in other species of crevice-dwelling lizards. However, variation in reproduction among species of Xenosaurus remains unexplained.  相似文献

The heat increment of feeding (HIF) was investigated in the tawny owl (Strix aluco) in central Norway (63°N, 10°E), close to the northern limit of its distribution. HIF was measured as the increase in heat production (measured as oxygen consumption) after force-feeding the owls with laboratory mice at thermoneutral conditions (20 °C) and during cold-exposure (5 °C and −5 °C). The basal metabolic rate of the owls (mean mass 419 g) was 4.39 kJ h−1 and the lower critical temperature was approximately 16 °C. During cold conditions, HIF substituted for thermogenesis, and at an ambient temperature of −5 °C the substitution was complete. Calculations indicate that the substitution by HIF may save the owls as much as 60% of their daily thermoregulatory costs. This corresponds to about 10% of their total daily energy budget.  相似文献

We have identified 15 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the barn owl (Tyto alba), five from testing published owl loci and 10 from testing non‐owl loci, including loci known to be of high utility in passerines and shorebirds. All 15 loci were sequenced in barn owl, and new primer sets were designed for eight loci. The 15 polymorphic loci displayed two to 26 alleles in 56–58 barn owls. When tested in 10 other owl species (n = 1–6 individuals), between four and nine loci were polymorphic per species. These loci are suitable for studies of population structure and parentage in owls.  相似文献

Abstract In unpolluted regions, where inorganic nitrogen (N) inputs from the atmosphere are minimal, such as remote locations in southern South America, litterfall dynamics and N use efficiency of tree species should be coupled to the internal N cycle of forest ecosystems. This hypothesis was examined in two evergreen temperate forests in southern Chile (42°30′S), a mixed broad‐leaved forest (MBF) and a conifer forest (CF). Although these forests grow under the same climate and on the same parental material, they differ greatly in floristic structure and canopy dynamics (slower in the CF). In both forests, biomass, N flux, and C/N ratios of fine litterfall were measured monthly from May 1995 to March 1999. There was a continuous litter flux over the annual cycle in both forests, with a peak during autumn in the CF. In the MBF, litterfall decreased during spring. In both forests, the C/N ratios of litterfall varied over the annual cycle with a maximum in autumn. Annual litterfall biomass flux (Mean ± SD = 3.3 ± 0.5 vs 2.0 ± 0.5 Mg ha?1) and N return (34.8 ± 16 vs 9.1 ± 2.8 kg N ha?1) were higher in the MBF than in the CF. At the ecosystem level, litterfall C/N was lower in the MBF (mean C/N ratio = 60.1 ± 15, n = 3 years) suggesting decreased N use efficiency compared with CF (mean C/N ratio = 103 ± 19.6, n = 3 years). At the species level, subordinated (subcanopy) tree species in the MBF had significantly lower C/N ratios (<50) of litterfall than the dominant trees in the CF and MBF (>85). The litterfall C/N ratio and percentage N retranslocated were significantly correlated and were lower in the MBF. The higher net N mineralization in soils of the MBF is related to a lower N use efficiency at the ecosystem and species level.  相似文献

Morphological comparisons of long-clawed mice in southern South America reveal the existence of four genera, only three of which are named. The fourth genus is described and compared with Geoxus, Chelemys and Notiomys. External, cranial and dental characters indicate that the new mouse is most closely related to Geoxus , the raton topo or mole mouse. Geoxus and the new form may be distinguished using both qualitative and quantitative characters. The incipient specializations of the new mouse for fossorial life suggest that it represents an early offshoot along the line leading to the more highly specialized Geoxus. Discovery of a new mammalian genus in Chile, where naturalists have been active for more than two centuries, indicates the importance of continued biological surveys, even in ostensibly well-studied regions. The new mouse reinforces the strong differentiation of faunas inhabiting southern beech ( Nothofagus ) forests in South America, where generic endemism of rodents and marsupials reaches 67%.  相似文献

We have investigated genetic parentage in a Swiss population of tawny owls (Strix aluco). To this end, we performed genetic analysis for six polymorphic loci of 49 avian microsatellite loci tested for cross-species amplification. We found one extra-pair young out of 137 (0.7%) nestlings in 37 families (2.7%). There was no intra-specific brood parasitism. Our results are in accordance with previous findings for other raptors and owls that genetic monogamy is the rule. Female tawny owls cannot raise offspring without a substantial contribution by their mates. Hence one favoured hypothesis is that high paternal investment in reproduction selects for behaviour that prevents cuckoldry. Vocal individuality has been used as a monitoring tool, and two criteria are a prerequisite: high variation among individuals and low variation within individuals, and vocal consistency within and across seasons. We examined individual variation in the territorial hoot calls of the tawny owl (Strix aluco) to discriminate between males and to assess a possible conservation technique that would allow for monitoring individuals within a study area. The territorial calls were recorded from five males in the Naejang Mountain National Park in South Korea during the breeding season in 2015 and 2016 and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively to determine the amount of variation within and between individuals. Our results showed that the territorial calls were specific to individuals within a population and that the acoustic distances between males living in the same territory during the two years were the smallest for the four nesting sites. Our results suggest that territorial calls of the tawny owls are individually identifiable over two years and that this acoustic technique can be useful for monitoring individual site fidelity.  相似文献

The hypothesis that extravagant ornaments signal parasite resistancehas received support in several species for ornamented malesbut more rarely for ornamented females. However, recent theorieshave proposed that females should often be under sexual selection,and therefore females may signal the heritable capacity toresist parasites. We investigated this hypothesis in the sociallymonogamous barn owl, Tyto alba, in which females exhibit on average more and larger black spots on the plumage than males,and in which males were suggested to choose a mate with respectto female plumage spottiness. We hypothesized that the proportionof the plumage surface covered by black spots signals parasiteresistance. In line with this hypothesis, we found that theectoparasitic fly, Carnus hemapterus, was less abundant onyoung raised by more heavily spotted females and those flieswere less fecund. In an experiment, where entire clutches werecross-fostered between nests, we found that the fecundity ofthe flies collected on nestlings was negatively correlatedwith the genetic mother's plumage spottiness. These resultssuggest that the ability to resist parasites covaries with theextent of female plumage spottiness. Among females collecteddead along roads, those with a lot of black spots had a smallbursa of Fabricius. Given that parasites trigger the developmentof this immune organ, this observation further suggests thatmore spotted females are usually less parasitized. The same analyses performed on male plumage spottiness all provided non-significant results. To our knowledge, this study is the first one showingthat a heritable secondary sexual characteristics displayedby females reflects parasite resistance.  相似文献

采用ICP-AES电感耦合等离子光谱仪对来源于北京地区的长耳鸮(Asio otus)和雕鸮(Bubo bubo)体内的金属元素Cr,Pb,Co,Cd,Ni和Mn含量进行了检测.长耳鸮各组织中的重金属含量,仅Cd(p=0.000)在不同组织中有显著性差异,雕鸮各组织中Cr(p=0.002),Ni(p=0.000),Co(p=0.009),Cd(p=0.010), Mn(p=0.002)在不同组织中有显著性差异.Cr在长耳鸮的肾脏中含量最高,而在雕鸮各组织中则是在脑中的含量最高.Cd的含量在各种金属中是最少的,而Mn的含量最高.两种鸮类中,Ni在长耳鸮胸羽中的含量高于其他组织,而在雕鸮体内则是在脑中的含量高于其他组织.Co在长耳鸮的肾脏中含量最高,雕鸮的脑中含量最高,肾脏次之.并且实验还发现无论是长耳鸮还是雕鸮,背羽都是检测重金属的最佳选择.  相似文献

A new species of Tytonidae, Tyto mourerchauvireae, is described from the Sicilian cave deposits of Spinagallo, Luparello and Marasà, which have yielded a common vertebrate fossil assemblages referred to the early Middle Pleistocene. T. mourerchauvireae nov. sp. shows a pronounced increase in body size compared to other congeneric taxa. It is larger than the extant Tyto alba and the extinct Tyto balearica and Tyto sanctialbani and comparable in size among the Mediterranean taxa only with the extinct Tyto robusta, which differs in some morphological characteristics of the long bones. The insular adaptations of T. mourerchauvireae nov. sp. and the differences from the other forms of the genus Tyto which spread through the Mediterranean area during Neogene and Pleistocene are discussed. The fossil assemblages of the early Middle Pleistocene of Sicily are dominated by extinct giant Gliridae of the genus Leithia and Maltamys; these taxa are regarded as the primary prey items of T. mourerchauvireae nov. sp. The Gliridae remains were analysed microscopically to detect possible modifications of bones and teeth caused by ingestion and digestion processes. This type of analysis, together with the qualitative study of the fossil assemblages, allows to show the taphonomical importance of T. mourerchauvireae nov. sp. as agent of accumulation in such Sicilian fossil assemblages. Incidentally the taxonomic validity of T. robusta is discussed and confirmed.  相似文献

We investigated the local environmental controls on daily fluctuations of cumulative radial increment and cambial hydration of three dominant, evergreen tree species from montane, Coastal rainforests of Chiloé Island, Chile (42° 22′ S). During 2 years (1997–1998 and 1998–1999) we recorded hourly cumulative radial increments using electronic band dendrometers in the long‐lived conifer Fitzroya cupressoides (Cupressaceae), the evergreen broad‐leaved Nothofagus nitida (Nothofagaceae), and the narrow‐leaved conifer Podocarpus nubigena (Podocarpaceae). We also measured soil and cambial tissue hydration using capacitance sensors, together with air and soil temperature and rainfall during the period of the study. In addition, we collected cores of these tree species to evaluate how dendrometer measurements reflect annual tree ring width. One‐year long daily time series of cumulative radial increments suggests that radial growth of Fitzroya cupressoides was initiated slowly in early spring, with a maximum in early summer. Multiple regressions showed positive relations between daily precipitation and radial index (i.e. the difference in cumulative radial increment of two consecutive days) in the three species. According to path analysis there was a significant direct effect of changes in tree hydration on radial index of the three focal species. In emergent, pioneer species such as Nothofagus and Fitzroya, radial index was negatively affected by changes in maximum air temperature and photosynthetically active radiation, probably because of high evapotranspiration demand on warm sunny days. The shade‐tolerant species Podocarpus nubigena was positively affected by photosynthetically active radiation. Our diel scale findings support the use of tree ring widths for reconstructing past climate in these southern temperate forests and provide evidence that rainforest trees may be highly sensitive to future declines in rainfall and temperature increases during summer.  相似文献

Inadequate availability of hematological reference data seriously restricts optimal utilization of the owl monkey (Aotus lemurinus griseimembra) as an experimental model. The current study investigated erythrocytic morphology in peripheral blood of healthy, colony-born owl monkeys. The blood of the subjects contained discoid erythrocytes, poikilocytes, and showed considerable anisocytosis. Also observed were nucleated erythrocytes, erythrocytes with Howell-Jolly bodies, and reticulocyte types I, II, and III. Heinz bodies were not detected.  相似文献

Canopy gap and chilling requirements for seed germination were assessed in 61 and 44 species, respectively, in the temperate rain forest of southern Chile. Germination assays within canopy gap and understorey were carried out under natural conditions. Germination tests in cold stratified and non-stratified seeds were performed under laboratory conditions. Seeds were collected of common trees, shrubs, vines and perennial herbs of forests in southern Chile. Final percent germination was significantly enhanced under canopy gap conditions in 19 species, and significantly reduced in 11 species. Germination proved indifferent under gap vs. understorey conditions in half the species tested. Cold stratification affected germination in 11 species: significantly increasing final germination of four species, and significantly decreasing final percent germination of seven species. A Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was applied with the purpose of identifying groups of species with similar germination strategies. Four attributes were included in the PCA: final germination percentage in canopy gap, germination rate in the laboratory, and gap-and chilling-dependency indices (EGAP and STRAT, respectively). The first axis separated species mainly on EGAP variation while the second axis separated them mainly according to STRAT variation; the two axes together explaining 73% of the among-species variation. A small group of trees and vines germinating best in the understorey and neutral to chilling could clearly be distinguished from the remaining species analyzed. Multifactorial ANOVAs were used for evaluating the combined effect of successional status, seed mass, dispersal period, life form, phylogenetic categories, and dispersal syndrome on EGAP and STRAT variation. The EGAP value of secondary successional species proved significantly greater than that of primary successional species and species with endozoochorous seed dispersal were significantly less dependent on chilling (according to STRAT values) compared to species with mainly wind-dispersed seeds.
