Two atractid nematodes are reported from the large intestine of freshwater turtles of the genus Podocnemis in Colombia. Paratractis hystrix (Diesing, 1851) is redescribed in detail using the scanning electron microscope and is reported from P. expansa, P. vogli and P. unifillis, the last being a new host. Buckleyatractis marinkelli n. g., n. sp. from P. unifillis is characterized by the nature and arrangement of the spines on the body, particularly the dorsal crest restricted to the cervical region and formed of three longitudinal rows of large spines.

Sixteen species of Copepoda were recorded in this first detailed study of Costa Rican zooplankton. Two of these species are halophile. Notes are given on some of the species and their distribution. One new species found will be described elsewhere. The Costa Rican fauna resembles in composition the fauna of other Central American and Caribbean regions. Relatively few species were recorded. This is partly due to a low intensity of sampling but also to the paucity of lentic habitats. The occurrence of two circumtropical species of Mesocyclops is interesting.

The African Spur tortoise, Geochelone sulcata, has been introduced to Costa Rica. A total of 31 tortoises were measured for 26 gross morphometry parameters. All individuals measured were inmature, aged from 5 to 34 months, and were born in captivity in La Garita de Alajuela, Costa Rica. Mean straight carapace length was 83.1 mm, mean straight plastron length was 68.3 mm and mean maximum height was 46.2 mm. All the measurements were correlated, except tail length and cloacal distance. Weight had the highest positive allometry coefficient. All the variables were joined in two Principal Components; tail length and cloacal distance in Factor 2 and the rest of them in Factor 1. Lack of correlation among tail measures and the other variables as well as their inclusion in a different Factor could be related with an incipient development of sexual dimorphism characters.

As a result of a review of the Costaceae for theManual de las Plantas de Costa Rica, two new species ofCostus (C. ricus andC. osae) are here described and illustrated. The assignment of the new species ofCostus subgen.Costus is discussed.

Lamproderma magniretisporum, a new species of myxomycete from Costa Rica, is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by its lignicolous habitat, long stalk, dark radial capillitium, large spores, and reticulate spore ornamentation. The stability of the taxonomic characters of L. magniretisporum is supported by two well-developed collections. The morphology of the sporocarp was subjected to detailed study with both the light microscope and the scanning electron microscope. Micrographs of all relevant features are presented. Seven thrush species (Turdidae) from Costa Rica were examined for intestinal parasites; 21 of the 84 (25%) birds sampled were positive for a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora zorzali n. sp. have thin, smooth, double, and colorless walls; they measure 19.7 ± 1.5 μm × 18.6 ± 1.4 μm (16-24 μm × 15-21 μm), with an average length-width ratio of 1.1 μm. Sporocysts are ovoid, measure 8.5 ± 1.1 μm × 14.5 ± 1.7 μm (7-11 μm × 11-18 μm) with an average length-width ratio of 1.7 μm. A nipple-like stieda body continuous with the sporocyst wall is present, but no substieda body was observed. A sporocyst residuum consisting of large equal sized granules was observed either clumped together or diffusely. The sporocysts fill the entire oocysts with little to no open space observed. This is the first report of Isospora species from any of the sampled host species and also the first report from any species of thrush in Costa Rica.

Dingularus n.g. is proposed to accommodate three new species, D. anfracticirrus, D. pearsoni and D. megapharynx, within the Plagiorchiida. Dingularus is closely related to the Plagiorchiidae, despite the unusual excretory systems of the three species. Adult worms were parasitic in the intestines of freshwater turtles, Chelodina expansa (D. pearsoni and D. megapharynx) and Emydura macquarii (D. anfracticirrus), and appeared to be host-specific. The three species had similar, three-host, aquatic life-cycles and each life-cycle was followed experimentally. The planorbid snail Glyptophysa gibbosa served as the first intermediate host for each species. Tadpoles of Limnodynastes peronii and snails G. gibbosa and Austropeplea lessoni served as second intermediate hosts. Dingularus spp. eggs were fully embryonated and infective when laid. They remained viable for 2-3 months in water but did not hatch until eaten by G. gibbosa. Miracidia were stimulated in the stomach of the snail host but did not hatch until eggs passed into the intestine. Hatching occurred in only the anterior fifth of the intestine. Hatched miracidia were not passed with the snail faeces. The pre-patent period in the snail differed in each species: D. anfracticirrus 42 days, D. pearsoni 23 days and D. megapharynx 32 days.

Jatropha costaricensis is described from Guanacaste, Costa Rica and assigned to sect.Platyphyllae. It is most similar toJ. alamanii of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, and represents part of a secondary Central American radiation of xeric-adapted Euphorbiaceae. Its geographic relationships indicate a formerly more widespread occurrence of a tropical deciduous flora in Mesoamerica, and it is suggested that xeric range disjunctions here and in adjacent South America may be largely due to climaticallyinduced extinction rather than to long-distance dispersal.
