A novel catalytic activity of palladium [Pd(0)]-coated cells of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 29577 ["bio-Pd(0)"] is demonstrated. Reduction of 700 microM Cr(VI) occurred within 24 h using formate (25 mM) or hydrogen (1 atm) as the electron donor, under conditions whereby cells lacking bound Pd(0), or palladium metal manufactured via chemical reduction of soluble Pd(II), did not reduce Cr(VI). The biomass-bound Pd(0) also functioned in the continuous removal of 400 microM Cr(VI) from a 1 mM solution under H(2) (flow residence time approximately 5 h), where chemically prepared Pd(0) was ineffective. This demonstrates a new type of active bioinorganic catalysis, whereby the presence of biomass bound to Pd(0) confers a novel catalytic capability not seen with Pd base metal or biomass alone.  相似文献

Motor vehicles are now equipped with exhaust gas catalytic converters containing rare metals, such as palladium (Pd), platinum and rhodium, as catalytic active materials, leading to significantly increased emission of these metals. Compared with platinum and rhodium, low concentrations of Pd have been shown to have more serious effects on cells and organisms. In the present study, uptake of Pd by barley and behaviour of Pd nanoparticles in nutrient solutions used to grow plants were observed in order to develop a model of Pd exposure of plant systems. Pd determination was performed using a selective separation and pre-concentration procedure, which was further developed for this study, and coupled to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The results show that uptake of Pd depends on Pd particle diameter. Compared to other toxic metals, like mercury, Pd causes stress effects in leaves at lower concentrations in nutrient solutions. Furthermore, Pd particles are dissolved at different rates, depending on size, in the nutrient solution during plant growth.  相似文献

Morphological and surface properties of electrospun chitosan nanofibers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Nonwoven fiber mats of chitosan with potential applications in air and water filtration were successfully made by electrospinning of chitosan and poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) blend solutions. Electrospinning of pure chitosan was hindered by its limited solubility in aqueous acids and high degree of inter- and intrachain hydrogen bonding. Nanometer-sized fibers with fiber diameter as low as 80 +/- 35 nm without bead defects were made by electrospinning high molecular weight chitosan/PEO (95:5) blends. Fiber formation was characterized by fiber shape and size and was found to be strongly governed by the polymer molecular weight, blend ratios, polymer concentration, choice of solvent, and degree of deacetylation of chitosan. Weight fractions of polymers in the electrospun nonwoven fibers mats were determined by thermal gravimetric analysis and were similar to ratio of polymers in the blend solution. Surface properties of fiber mats were determined by measuring the binding efficiency of toxic heavy metal ions like chromium, and they were found to be related with fiber composition and structure.  相似文献

Competitive sorption of platinum and palladium on chitosan derivatives   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Glutaraldehyde-cross-linked chitosan (GCC), thiourea derivative of chitosan (TGC) and rubeanic acid derivative of chitosan (RADC) have previously been shown to be very efficient at removing platinum and palladium from single component dilute acidic solutions. This study examines the competitive sorption of these metal anions in bi-component mixtures for GCC, TGC and RADC. Palladium sorption is less sensitive to the presence of platinum than the reverse: the maximum sorption capacity decreases less for palladium than for platinum in the presence of the competitor anion (the metals being in their chloro-metal forms). Moreover, the Langmuir-shape of the sorption isotherm for palladium is unaffected (with the usual plateau reached at low residual palladium), while in the case of platinum sorption, the isotherms exhibit a significant decrease of the sorption capacity at high residual platinum concentration which increases with increasing concentrations of palladium. RADC is more selective for palladium over platinum than the other chitosan derivatives. A preliminary study of the competitive sorption kinetics in both batch and fixed bed systems is presented for RADC and confirms the higher affinity of the sorbent for palladium than for platinum.  相似文献

In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different molecular weight, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), are chosen as porogens for preparing chitosan base porous microsphere supported palladium catalyst for coupling reactions. The pore structure of the microspheres was controlled by the compatibility of chitosan and counterpart polymers. The prepared porous chitosan microspheres supported palladium heterogeneous catalysts have been evaluated using the well-established Ullmann reductive homocoupling and the Heck cross-coupling reactions. The activities, stabilities and recyclability of the porous chitosan microspheres supported palladium catalysts are not only highly dependent upon the surface areas of the solid supports, but also upon the chemical properties of the water-soluble polymers. The degradation of the prepared heterogeneous palladium catalysts is mainly caused by a combination of the palladium leaching and the morphological transformation of the palladium species from the amorphous into the crystals.  相似文献

Biosynthesis of nano-scale platinum and palladium was achieved via enzymatically-mediated deposition of metal ions from solution. The bio-accumulated Pt(0) and Pd(0) crystals were dried, applied onto carbon paper and tested as anodes in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell for power production. Up to 100% and 81% of the maximum power generation was achieved by the bio-Pt and bio-Pd catalysts, respectively, compared to commercial fuel cell grade Pt catalyst. Hence, biomineralisation could pave the way for economical production of fuel cell catalysts since previous studies have shown that precious metals can be biorecovered from wastes into catalytically active bionanomaterials.  相似文献

Preparation and properties of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan blend fibers   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan blend fibers, prepared by spinning their mixture solution through a viscose-type spinneret into a coagulating bath containing aqueous CaCl2, were studied for structure and properties with the aid of infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron micrography (SEM). The analyses indicated a good miscibility between alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan, because of the strong interaction from the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The best values of the dry tensile strength and breaking elongation were obtained when carboxymethyl chitosan content was 30 and 10 wt%, respectively. The wet tensile strength and breaking elongation decreased with the increase of carboxymethyl chitosan content. Introduction of CM-chitosan in the blend fiber improved water-retention properties of blend fiber compared to pure alginate fiber. Antibacterial fibers, obtained by treating the fibres with aqueous solution of N-(2-hydroxy)-propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride and silver nitrate, respectively, exhibited good antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus.  相似文献

We investigated the spinning of hydroalcoholic chitosan solutions. The dope composition was optimized in order to obtain a continuous alcogel fiber by water evaporation on heating the extruded hydroalcoholic solution. This alcogel fiber was then neutralized in aqueous alkali baths and washed in water to eliminate the residual alcohol and salts before final drying. Depending on the alcohol content in the filament at the neutralization step, on specific alcohol–chitosan interactions and on the nature and concentration of the coagulation base, the process yielded semicrystalline chitosan fibers with different proportions of anhydrous and hydrated allomorphs. Contrarily to the classical annealing method, the formation of mainly anhydrous crystals was obtained without significant molecular weight decrease by neutralizing the polymer in hydrophobic conditions. The control of allomorph content was shown to be related to the hydrophobicity of the solvent (alcohol fraction) at the neutralization step.  相似文献

The catalytic hydrogenation of 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (DMPhen) has been achieved using silica-supported palladium nanoparticles (Pd/SiO2) with metal contents of 1.98 or 9.95 wt%. With either catalyst, the hydrogenation regiochemistry has been effectively controlled by the reaction temperature. The catalyst with the higher metal content was selective for the hydrogenation of one heterocyclic ring of either substrate at 80 °C and for both external rings at 130 °C for Phen and at 160 °C for DMPhen. The catalyst with the lower metal content was more active and exhibited comparable selectivity.  相似文献

The increasing demand and limited natural resources for industrially important platinum‐group metal (PGM) catalysts render the recovery from secondary sources such as industrial waste economically interesting. In the process of palladium (Pd) recovery, microorganisms have revealed a strong potential. Hitherto, bacteria with the property of dissimilatory metal reduction have been in focus, although the biochemical reactions linking enzymatic Pd(II) reduction and Pd(0) deposition have not yet been identified. In this study we investigated Pd(II) reduction with formate as the electron donor in the presence of Gram‐negative bacteria with no documented capacity for reducing metals for energy production: Cupriavidus necator, Pseudomonas putida, and Paracoccus denitrificans. Only large and close‐packed Pd(0) aggregates were formed in cell‐free buffer solutions. Pd(II) reduction in the presence of bacteria resulted in smaller, well‐suspended Pd(0) particles that were associated with the cells (called “bioPd(0)” in the following). Nanosize Pd(0) particles (3–30 nm) were only observed in the presence of bacteria, and particles in this size range were located in the periplasmic space. Pd(0) nanoparticles were still deposited on autoclaved cells of C. necator that had no hydrogenase activity, suggesting a hydrogenase‐independent formation mechanism. The catalytic properties of Pd(0) and bioPd(0) were determined by the amount of hydrogen released in a reaction with hypophosphite. Generally, bioPd(0) demonstrated a lower level of activity than the Pd(0) control, possibly due to the inaccessibility of the Pd(0) fraction embedded in the cell envelope. Our results demonstrate the suitability of bacterial cells for the recovery of Pd(0), and formation and immobilization of Pd(0) nanoparticles inside the cell envelope. However, procedures to make periplasmic Pd(0) catalytically accessible need to be developed for future nanobiotechnological applications. Biotechnol. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that palladium chloride was adsorbed on a plastic surface coated with a chitosan-containing paint (C-Paint), and was completely reduced to Pd(0) after reduction with dimethylamine-borane. To improve the stability and hardening properties of C-Paint, UV-curable chitosan derivatives, such as N-[3-methoxy-4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxy)phenyl]methylated chitosan and N-(3-methoxy-4-methacryloyloxyphenyl)methylated chitosan, were synthesized. The derivatives showed better affinity for organic solvents. After UV irradiation for 20s, an acidic solution of these derivatives was transformed to a gel, and the dried films exhibited good palladium(II) adsorption at pH 1.1.  相似文献

The interaction between Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and the soluble metal Pd(II) during the reductive precipitation of Pd(0) determined the size and properties of the precipitated Pd(0) nanoparticles. Assessment of cell viability indicated that the bioreduction of Pd(II) was a detoxification mechanism depending on the Pd(II) concentration and on the presence and properties of the electron donor. The addition of H2 in the headspace allowed S. oneidensis to resist the toxic effects of Pd(II). Interestingly, 25 mM formate was a less effective electron donor for bioreductive detoxification of Pd(II), since there was a 2 log reduction of culturable cells and a 20% decrease of viable cells within 60 min, followed by a slow recovery. When the ratio of Pd:cell dry weight (CDW) was below 5:2 at a concentration of 50 mg l−1 Pd(II), most of the cells remained viable. These viable cells precipitated Pd(0) crystals over a relatively larger bacterial surface area and had a particle area that was up to 100 times smaller when compared to Pd(0) crystals formed on non-viable biomass (Pd:CDW ratio of 5:2). The relatively large and densely covering Pd(0) crystals on non-viable biomass exhibited high catalytic reactivity towards hydrophobic molecules such as polychlorinated biphenyls, while the smaller and more dispersed nanocrystals on a viable bacterial carrier exhibited high catalytic reactivity towards the reductive degradation of the anionic pollutant perchlorate.  相似文献

We have developed miniaturized heterogeneous Pd(0)-catalysts (Pd(0)-microspheres) with the ability to enter cells, stay harmlessly within the cytosol and mediate efficient bioorthogonal organometallic chemistries (e.g., allylcarbamate cleavage and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling). This approach is a major addition to the toolbox available for performing chemical reactions within cells. Here we describe a full protocol for the synthesis of the Pd(0)-microspheres from readily available starting materials (by the synthesis of size-controlled amino-functionalized polystyrene microspheres), as well as for their characterization (electron microscopy and palladium quantitation) and functional validation ('in solution' and 'in cytoplasm' conversions). From the beginning of the synthesis to functional evaluation of the catalytic device requires 5 d of work.  相似文献

Trace amounts of adventitious transition metals in buffer solutions can serve as catalysts for many oxidative processes. To fully understand what role these metals may play it is necessary that buffer solutions be 'catalytic metal free'. We demonstrate here that ascorbate can be used in a quick and easy test to determine if near-neutral buffer solutions are indeed 'catalytic metal free'. In buffers which have been rendered free of catalytic metals we have found that ascorbate is quite stable, even at pH 7. The first-order rate constant for the loss of ascorbate in an air-saturated catalytic metal free solution is less than 6 X 10(-7) s-1 at pH 7.0. This upper limit appears to be set by the inability to completely eliminate catalytic metal contamination of solutions and glassware. We conclude that in the absence of catalytic metals, ascorbate is stable at pH 7.  相似文献

The physicochemical characterization of metal complexed with chitosan (CS) and its glutaraldehyde cross-linked derivative (CSGA) was investigated. Seven metal ions from chromium through zinc of the first row of the transition metals were selected for complexation. Structural features pertinent to where and how metals bind into both polymers are our main interest. Studies using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and XRPD (X-ray powder diffraction) supported by ESR spectroscopy, ICP-OES (inductively couple plasma-optical emission spectroscopy) and far-FTIR spectroscopy for metal interaction with nitrogen sites at C-2 of the metal-polymer complexes were performed. Theoretical calculations of the metal-polymer ratio, the approximate charges on nitrogen for both amine and imino-linker, and the proton affinity between an alcohol group from the polymer and an amino/imino group are reported. A helical coiled chitosan model and a 2C1L (two-chitosans with one linker) model are proposed here. The metal uptake mechanism for both polymers is concluded to be absorption within the polymers, rather than adsorption on the polymer surface.  相似文献

Biosorption of precious metals   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Biosorption has emerged as a low-cost and often low-tech option for removal or recovery of base metals from aqueous wastes. The conditions under which precious metals such as gold, platinum and palladium are sorbed by biomass are often very different to those under which base metals are sorbed. This, coupled with the increasingly high demand for precious metals, drives the increase in research into efficient recovery of precious metal ions from all waste material, especially refining wastewaters. Common biosorbents for precious metal ions include various derivatives of chitosan, as well as other compounds with relatively high surface amine functional group content. This is generally due to the ability of the positively charged amine groups to attract anionic precious metal ions at low pH. Recent research regarding the biosorption of some precious metals is reviewed here, with emphasis on the effects of the biosorption environment and the biosorption mechanisms identified.  相似文献

Implosion of metallized fiber arrays was studied experimentally at the Angara-5-1 facility. The use of such arrays makes it possible to investigate the production and implosion dynamics of plasmas of various metals (such as tin, indium, and bismuth) that were previously unavailable for such studies. The plasma production rates ? (in μg/(cm2 ns)) for different metals were determined and quantitatively compared. Varying the thickness of the metal layer deposited on kapron fibers (the total linear mass of the metal coating being maintained at the level of 220 μg/cm), the current and velocity of the plasma precursor were studied as functions of the thickness of the metal coating. The strong difference in the rates of plasma production from the metal coating and kapron fibers results in the redistribution of the discharge current between the Z-pinch and the trailing fiber plasma. The outer boundary of the plasma produced from the metal coating is found to be stable against instabilities typical of the final stage of implosion of conventional wire arrays.  相似文献

The adsorption of Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) onto glycine modified crosslinked chitosan resin (GMCCR) has been investigated. The parameters studied include the effects of pH, contact time, ionic strength and the initial metal ion concentrations by batch method. The optimal pH for the adsorption of Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was found to range from 1.0 to 4.0 and the maximum uptake was obtained at pH 2.0 for Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II). The results obtained from equilibrium adsorption studies are fitted in various adsorption models such as Langmuir and Freundlich and the model parameters have been evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacity of GMCCR for Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was found to be 169.98, 122.47 and 120.39mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data was tested using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and an intraparticle diffusion model. The correlation results suggested that the pseudo-second-order model was the best choice among all the kinetic models to describe the adsorption behavior of Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) onto GMCCR. Various concentrations of HCl, thiourea and thiourea-HCl solutions were used to desorb the adsorbed precious metal ions from GMCCR. It was found that 0.7M thiourea-2M HCl solution provided effectiveness of the desorption of Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from GMCCR. The modification of glycine on crosslinked chitosan resin (CCR) was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).  相似文献
