For avoiding the unfavorable environmental conditions several aquatic microorganisms are capable of forming specialized resistance cells like akinets, hypnospores, statospores, etc. Recognition of the important role of cysts in the life cycles of dinoflagellates increased the need to study their role in the ecology of phytoplanktons, and this, combined with the knowledge of chemical and biological characteristics of the water, may lead to a better understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of dinoflagellates. This paper reports on the effects of temperature, nitrogen, and phosphorus on the percentage of encystment of the dinoflagellate Peridinum cinctum Stein. The phosphorus content of the medium affected encystment only at the highest temperature applied (22 °C). Nitrogen content and temperature were the most important factors controlling the encystment.  相似文献

The central nervous system (CNS) is a relatively immune-privileged organ, wherein a well-instated barrier system (the blood-brain barrier) prevents the entry of blood cells into the brain with the exception of regular immune surveillance cells. Despite this tight security immune cells are successful in entering the CNS tissue where they result in states of neuroinflammation, tissue damage and cell death. Various components of the blood-brain barrier and infiltrating cells have been examined to better understand how blood cells are able to breach this secure barrier. Proteases, specifically matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), have been found to be the common culprits in most diseases involving neuroinflammation. MMPs secreted by infiltrating cells act specifically upon targets on various components of the blood-brain barrier, compromising this barrier and allowing cell infiltration into the CNS. Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is an upstream inducer of several MMPs and is suggested to be the master regulator of MMP production in disease states such as cancer metastasis. EMMPRIN in the context of the CNS is still relatively understudied. In this review we will introduce EMMPRIN, discuss its ligands and roles in non-CNS conditions that can help implicate its involvement in CNS disorders, showcase its expression within the CNS in healthy and disease conditions, elucidate its ligands and receptors, and briefly discuss the emerging roles it plays in various diseases of the CNS involving inflammation.  相似文献

Filamins were discovered as the first family of non-muscle actin-binding protein. They are lage cytoplasmic proteins that cross-link cortical actin into a dynamic three-dimensional structure. Filamins have also been reported to interact with a large number of cellular proteins of great functional diversity, suggesting that they are unusually versatile signalling scaffolds. More recently, genetic mutations in filamin A and B have been reported to cause a wide range of human diseases, suggesting that different diseases highlight distinct filamin interactions.  相似文献

Both males and females of Baeopterogyna mihalyiiMatile, 1975 are recorded from northern Greece. Females are described for the first time providing photographs of the general facies and terminalia. In contrast to the single congener with stenopterous females - Baeopterogyna nudipes Vockeroth, 1972 - Baeopterogyna mihalyii is shown to have normally developed wings in both sexes. Association of sexes is based on both morphological characters and sequence data from cytochrome oxidase subunit one (COI). DNA sequences are used for the first time for the association of sexes in Mycetophilidae.  相似文献

Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum were isolated from whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) from McGregor Lake, Alberta. Adult D. dendriticum were obtained by infection of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Analysis of morphological variables indicated high variability and some overlap with D. latum. Correlations in morphology were due to the covariance of shape variables. Isozyme analysis also showed high variability, with two thirds of the enzymes studied being polymorphic. Correlations with morphology indicate a relationship between rare patterns for malate dehydrogenase and esterase and increased size of adults. Southern hybridisation with ribosomal gene probes produced two common patterns and a rare intermediate form, indicating that the species is variable even within a local population. Correlations between rDNA pattern type and morphological variables supported the hypothesis of a genetic base for the morphological variability.  相似文献

An array of 12 20 × 20 m quadrats in a mixed forest near Poteply, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic, was investigated for the abundance and spatial distribution of host-questing Ixodes ricinus nymphs and their infection with borreliae. Tick densities were estimated by flagging and their borrelia infection status was determined by direct immunofluorescence. While the tick population appeared to be continuous and homogeneous based on quadrat counts, their infection with borreliae evinced a mosaic pattern. The nymphal infection rates ranged between 1.6 and 10.5% (mean = 6.0%) with significant differences between adjacent quadrats. Home ranging of small rodents (Apodemus flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareolus) inhabiting the forest seems to be responsible for the spatial pattern of borrelial infection.  相似文献

Low genetic variation is thought to increase the risk of extinction in island species; however, these species can differ both in terms of endemism and gene flow. In a previous study, the endemic species of Puerto Rico (V. latimeri) and Jamaica (V. modestus and V. osburni) were shown to have less genetic variability than a continental relative, V. griseus. In this study, a migratory island species, V. altiloquus, is analyzed together with the endemics in order to (1) compare levels of genetic variation in migratory and endemic island species, and (2) assess this variation using both molecular markers and morphological traits. Each island species is also compared to a continental relative (V. griseus for the endemic species, and V. olivaceus for the migratory species). Variability in random amplified polymorphic DNA markers was significantly lower in the endemic species than in either migratory population. All island populations had significantly lower levels of variation than their respective continental relatives, but with significantly greater reduction in the endemic species. In contrast, the morphological measures revealed only two cases with a significantly lower CV in an endemic species compared to V. altiloquus or V. griseus. All others exhibited either no differences in CV or greater levels in the island populations. While the molecular results generally correspond to predictions of lower variability in endemic vs. migratory island species and island vs. continental species, the morphological comparisons do not, and therefore may not be useful for quick, field-based assessments of underlying genetic variability. Microsatellite markers were developed to assess population structure and patterns of translocation in the introduced European common genet (Genetta genetta). Primer pairs were designed for 60 microsatellite sequences enriched for CA, GA, CATC and TAGA repeat motifs. Eleven loci that proved to be polymorphic were genotyped in 33 individuals from southwestern France. The number of alleles per locus and observed heterozygosities varied from three to seven and from 0.2121 to 0.7576, respectively. One locus (B103) showed significant departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, probably due to the presence of null alleles. Tests of linkage disequilibrium did not detect significant associations among loci.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among 14 species of the subgenus Stegana are reconstructed with the combined sequences of the mitochondrial genes, ND2 (NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2) and COI (cytochrome c oxidase, subunit I). Moreover, the intra- and interspecific pairwise K-2P (Kimura's two-parameter) distances among these species are summarized, and the availability of mitochondrial markers in the species identification of the subgenus Stegana are further discussed.

During the last decades of the twentieth century, the alien gammarid species Gammarus tigrinus, Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, Pontogammarus robustoides and Obesogammarus crassus invaded the lower Vistula River and its deltaic, partly brackish regions. In brackish waters of the Vistula Lagoon the native Atlantic-boreal species Gammarus zaddachi and Gammarus duebeni have been replaced or at least outnumbered by the aliens. As compared to our earlier studies, through the years 1998–2004 we could observe nearly total decline of the native gammarid populations along the coasts of the Lagoon, and overdomination of the North-American G. tigrinus in most places. Possible reasons for the observed phenomena are e.g. increasing pollution and eutrophication of the Lagoon accompanied by competition between the native and the alien species.  相似文献

Conflict among data sources can be frequent in evolutionary biology, especially in cases where one character set poses limitations to resolution. Earthworm taxonomy, for example, remains a challenge because of the limited number of morphological characters taxonomically valuable. An explanation to this may be morphological convergence due to adaptation to a homogeneous habitat, resulting in high degrees of homoplasy. This sometimes impedes clear morphological diagnosis of species. Combination of morphology with molecular techniques has recently aided taxonomy in many groups difficult to delimit morphologically. Here we apply an integrative approach by combining morphological and molecular data, including also some ecological features, to describe a new earthworm species in the family Hormogastridae, Hormogaster abbatissae sp. n., collected in Sant Joan de les Abadesses (Girona, Spain). Its anatomical and morphological characters are discussed in relation to the most similar Hormogastridae species, which are not the closest species in a phylogenetic analysis of molecular data. Species delimitation using the GMYC method and genetic divergences with the closest species are also considered. The information supplied by the morphological and molecular sources is contradictory, and thus we discuss issues with species delimitation in other similar situations. Decisions should be based on a profound knowledge of the morphology of the studied group but results from molecular analyses should also be considered.  相似文献

Early blight (Alternaria solani) is an important disease causing severe damage in tomato. The eleven isolates of A. solani designated as So, Dh, Sh, Va-5, Ka, Ma, Hy, Ba-1, My, Va-3 and Mi were collected from different agroclimatic conditions and these isolates were characterized for cultural, morphological, pathogenic and molecular variations. The pigmentation varied from yellow, brown, black, brownish to greenish black in isolates of A. solani on potato dextrose agar medium. In general, radial growth of all isolates ranged between 14.9 mm and 32.2 mm on PDA and 24.3 mm to 53.7 mm on three selective media i.e., ASM, V-8 juice agar and V-8 juice agar (synthetic) on the fourth day. The fastest radial growth was recorded in the So isolate and slowest in the Ka isolate on PDA, while isolates Dh, Ba-1 and Va-3 were recorded to be faster in growth on ASM, V-8 juice agar and V-8 juice agar (synthetic) medium. The thickness of conidiogenous hyphae varied between 1.17 μ and 9.56 μ, with maximum in the Va-5 and Ma isolates. Most of the isolates showed smooth mycelial growth with circular and irregular margin and without concentric zonation. Sporulation was not found in any of the isolates on four different nutrient media, whereas conidiogenous hyphal length was observed in V-8 juice agar medium only. Based on the pathogenicity, isolates of A. solani were rated as virulent or less virulent based on percentage disease incidence data. Molecular variability studies were also done to find out the best annealing temperature and eighty-six primers were screened to select for maximum polymorphism of DNA. The best annealing temperature was recorded between 32.5 °C and 34.0 °C for the pathogen, and most efficient amplification and polymorphism of DNA was found with random primer 5′-CGCGTTCCTG-3′.  相似文献

We implemented a detailed morphometry and multivariate statistics to establish a general, large-scale racial differentiation in Asellus aquaticus (L.) sensu Racovitza. We ascertained that in surface populations a set of 11 morphometric characters might equivalently be represented by the pleopod respiratory area size alone. The analyses resulted in a distinct distribution pattern, with the large respiratory area populations disposed mainly along the Dinaric karst between southern Slovenia and western Macedonia and surrounded by the medium respiratory area morph, spatially irregularly substituted by the small area morph. This pattern is in contradiction with the distribution pattern of molecularly defined clades (as shown by Verovnik et al. 2005 ). We could find no ecological, hydrographical or paleogeographical explanations for such distribution pattern either. The only hypothetical explanation would be a preservation of the large respiratory area as a plesiomorphic character in the comparatively sheltered karst habitats, while throughout the easier accessible parts of the species range it was replaced by the 'modern' smaller area size. While a diminution of the respiratory area functionally means an increased sclerotization – hardening of pleopod IV–V exopodites, endopodites of pleopods III–V remain less sclerotized, probably respiratory and osmoregulatory functional.  相似文献

Raddia brasiliensis forms a species complex with the recently segregated R. megaphylla, R. lancifolia, R. soderstromii and R. stolonifera, occurring in the Atlantic rainforest, Brazil. Allozymic markers were used in 272 individuals of 14 populations of this group to investigate its genetic variability, correlating this with morphological variability, and testing the proposed taxonomy based on multivariate morphometrics. Genetic variability was low in almost all populations (P = 22.2–66.7, = 1.3–2.0, H e=0.04–0.17). R. brasiliensis showed a very high endogamy (F IS = 0.329). Values for genetic and morphological structuring were very high to high (F ST = 0.43, A MRPP = 0.22; F ST = 0.19, A MRPP = 0.10 and F ST = 0.18, A MRPP = 0.39), respectively, for R. brasiliensis, R. soderstromii and R. megaphylla. The lowest genetic identity between populations was also found in R. brasiliensis, and the highest morphological differentiation was found between populations of R. megaphylla. Allozymic and morphological data were congruent and complementary, and confirm that we are dealing with five distinct species as previously circumscribed.  相似文献

The neotropical genusExostema comprises 25 species of trees and shrubs, ranging in distribution from Bolivia to Mexico and throughout the West Indies, with most species endemic to the Greater Antilles. Infrageneric relationships and species-level patterns of evolution were investigated in phylogenetic analyses using morphological, molecular, and combined data sets. All data sets resolved three main species groups which correspond to the three sections recognized byMcDowell (1996). However, the analyses of ITS sequence data placed the two South American species basal to the three main clades. Otherwise, the morphological and molecular data are highly compatible, and produce a more robust yet consistent phylogeny in the combined data analysis. Morphological evolution inExostema involves many specializations for xeric habitats, reflecting repeated ecological shifts from moist forest to exposed, seasonally dry environments during the diversification of the genus. Both moth and bee pollination syndromes are found inExostema, and shifts in pollination ecology appear pivotal to the differentiation of the three sections. Biogeographically,Exostema likely originated in South America and migrated via Central America to the Greater Antilles, where the morphological diversification and speciation are most extensive.  相似文献

The rodent genus Oecomys (Sigmodontinae) comprises ~16 species that inhabit tropical and subtropical forests in Central America and South America. In this study specimens of Oecomys paricola Thomas, 1904 from Belém and Marajó island, northern Brazil, were investigated using cytogenetic, molecular and morphological analyses. Three karyotypes were found, two from Belém (2n = 68, fundamental number (FN) = 72 and 2n = 70, FN = 76) and a third from Marajó island (2n = 70, FN = 72). No molecular or morphological differences were found between the individuals with differing cytotypes from Belém, but differences were evident between the individuals from Belém and Marajó island. Specimens from Belém city region may represent two cryptic species because two different karyotypes are present in the absence of significant differences in morphology and molecular characteristics. The Marajó island and Belém populations may represent distinct species that have been separated for some time, and are in the process of morphological and molecular differentiation as a consequence of reproductive isolation at the geographic and chromosomal levels. Thus, the results suggest that O. paricola may be a complex of species.  相似文献
