Lipid composition of Heterotis niloticus, Brycenus nurse, Gnathonemus cyprinoides and Sarotherodon galilaeus, which vary in scale thickness, were studied. Heterotis niloticus (very thick scales) had the lowest lipid content (13%), while G. cyprinoids (light scales) had the highest lipid content (26%). The common neutral lipids were cholesterol, free fatty acids and cholesterol esters, while diphosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl glycerol and phosphatidyl ethanolamine were the most predominant phospholipids.  相似文献

The presence of amylase and maltase in the stomach, intestine and pyloric caeca of Heterotis niloticus is demonstrated. Amylase activity was highest in the fore-gut, followed by the pyloric caeca, while the lowest activity was in the hind-gut. Optimum pH for intestinal amylase was 8.45. Sucrase, lactase and cellulase were not detected.  相似文献

The population dynamics of two small cichlid fishes (Pharyngochromis darlingi andPseudocrenilabrus philander) were studied in Lake Kariba, a very large African man-made lake. They are of no economic importance but make up about 14% and 7% respectively of the inshore fish population and are the major components of the diet of fish-eating birds on the lake.P. darlingi isthe larger species (L = 156.5 mm) and is found on both shelving and steep, eroding shores. Its mortality rate differs in each habitat (Z = 0.44 and 0.72 month–1 respectively), only 0.79% survive for 12 months and its % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamiuaiaac+% cadaqdaaqaaiaadkeaaaaaaa!384D!\[P/\overline B \] ratio is 5.45 (on shelving shores).Ps. philander is smaller (L = 83.9 mm) and is restricted to shelving areas with abundant vegetation. Its monthly mortality rate was high (Z = 7.69), only 0.05% survive to 12 months whilst its % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamiuaiaac+% cadaqdaaqaaiaadkeaaaaaaa!384D!\[P/\overline B \] ratio was very high (7.69). The estimates of growth obtained forP. darlingi differ considerably from those given in an earlier study in Lake Kariba and some possible reasons for this are discussed. In suitable habitats, the combined production of both species could be 40 kg ha–1 yr–1 which indicates their potential importance to the ecology of the lake.  相似文献

Five years after inundation, two varieties of Cyprinus carpio —the common carp and the mirror carp, have appeared in the commercial fishery in Lake Kamburu. Species of Tilapia continue to remain the most abundant fish in the lake and their numbers are on the increase. The second most numerous species is Barbus while Labeo sp. seems to be declining. The numbers of Mormyrus have declined drastically. Species of the genera Tilapia, Barbus and Cyprinus are widely distributed within the lake; Labeo prefers the confluence of the rivers entering into the lake and Mormyrus has moved upriver.  相似文献

Plant food bodies are rarely observed in the field, because of continual harvesting, and are often first documented on isolated glasshouse plants. Little is known about the genus Ryparosa (Achariaceae), and the appearance of outgrowths on leaves and stems of glasshouse-raised R. kurrangii seedlings suggested that the species may produce food bodies. Detailed macroimaging and histological techniques were used to characterize chemomorphological variation in food body material gathered from glasshouse plants. Two distinct types of food body were observed. Multicellular pearl bodies derived from epidermal and mesophyll tissue were produced on young leaves and stems, and contained lipids and glycogen-like carbohydrates. A unique form of lipid-rich multicellular food body that 'opens' during development was found exclusively on mature plant tissue. A filament network was associated with food body lipid droplets. This is the first detailed documentation of food body production in an understorey genus adapted to low light conditions. We suggest that the distinctive spatial deployment of Ryparosa food rewards, and the ants attracted to them, may be invaluable for keeping long-lived leaves free from epiphyllous communities.  相似文献

The reproductive and diapausing adult females of brachypterous morph and macropterous females with reproductive arrest of non-diapause type, originating from the laboratory cultures of Pyrrhocoris apterus, were studied for their feeding and drinking behaviour, digestive enzyme activities, and carbohydrate and lipid contents. The highest feeding and drinking activities were observed in reproductive brachypters, the lowest in macropters. Macropters also differed from brachypters by lower activities of gut lipase, peptidase and protease, lower concentration of haemolymph sugars, and lower weight of fat body, which probably reflects their low feeding activity. The total content of fat body lipids was also lower in macropters (0.6 mg) than in reproductive and diapausing brachypters (4.6 and 7.5 mg, respectively) on day 14. A very high amount of glycogen was found in the fat body of diapausing brachypters, 363 μg on day 14, as opposed to 15 and 80 μg in macropterous and reproductive brachypterous females, respectively. The obtained data indicate that the most important difference between macropterous and brachypterous females with different types of reproductive arrest consists of an enhanced mobilization of lipids for dispersal in macropters and accumulation of energetic reserves for hibernation in brachypters.  相似文献

1. Abundance and bacterial production (BP) of heterotrophic bacteria (HBact) were measured in the north and south basins of Lake Tanganyika, East Africa, during seasonal sampling series between 2002 and 2007. The major objective of the study was to assess whether BP can supplement phytoplankton particulate primary production (particulate PP) in the pelagic waters, and whether BP and particulate PP are related in this large lake. HBact were enumerated in the 0–100 m surface layer by epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry; BP was quantified using 3H‐thymidine incorporation, usually in three mixolimnion layers (0–40, 40–60 and 60–100 m). 2. Flow cytometry allowed three subpopulations to be distinguished: low nucleic acid content bacteria (LNA), high nucleic acid content bacteria (HNA) and Synechococcus‐like picocyanobacteria (PCya). The proportion of HNA was on average 67% of total bacterial abundance, and tended to increase with depth. HBact abundance was between 1.2 × 105 and 4.8 × 106 cells mL−1, and was maximal in the 0–40 m layer (i.e. roughly, the euphotic layer). Using a single conversion factor of 15 fg C cell−1, estimated from biovolume measurements, average HBact biomass (integrated over a 100‐m water column depth) was 1.89 ± 1.05 g C m−2. 3. Significant differences in BP appeared between seasons, especially in the south basin. The range of BP integrated over the 0–100 m layer was 93–735 mg C m−2 day−1, and overlapped with the range of particulate PP (150–1687 mg C m−2 day−1) measured in the same period of time at the same sites. 4. Depth‐integrated BP was significantly correlated to particulate PP and chlorophyll‐a, and BP in the euphotic layer was on average 25% of PP. 5. These results suggest that HBact contribute substantially to the particulate organic carbon available to consumers in Lake Tanganyika, and that BP may be sustained by phytoplankton‐derived organic carbon in the pelagic waters.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Radio transmitters were implanted in large perch (27–37 cm) in a shallow lake in Denmark. Between 6 and 13 perch were tracked every 3 h for 24‐h periods twice (summer) or once a month (winter) from August 1997 to July 1998. Activity levels were recorded as minimum distance moved per hour. 2. No significant differences in activity levels of individual fish were observed. 3. Highest activities were observed at daytime with peaks at dawn and dusk or midday. This diel pattern was most pronounced from October to April, whereas diel variations were less in the summer months, with no peaks occurring in midsummer. The general lack of activity at night supports the idea that perch is a visually oriented forager. 4. There was no significant relationship between daytime activity during the year and temperature or day length, but nighttime activity was correlated with temperature. In contrast with previous findings, activity levels varied little seasonally, except for high activity levels that occurred concomitantly with high temperatures in August. Instead, we found a significant relationship between the total distances moved per day and temperature, indicating that perch moved at the same average speed in the wintertime, but did so for shorter periods than in summer because of shorter day lengths. 5. Diet of the tagged perch shifted from fish dominance between August and January to invertebrates from February to June. There was no correlation between the diet shift and activity levels, indicating that feeding on invertebrate requires similar activity levels as predation on fish. 6. The results of this telemetry study throughout a year suggest that perch are more active during the winter than previously inferred from gill‐net catches. This observation underscores the importance of perch as a predator of 0+ planktivorous fish in lakes and has potential implications for pelagic food web structure and lake management by biomanipulation.  相似文献

Studies on the food and feeding habits of Eutropius niloticus in Lake Kainji, Nigeria revealed that the fish is omnivorous but fed more on insects than on any other food. The most important insects were Povilla adusta Navas nymphs and imagos and adults of the common grasshoppers. Fish, particularly the clupeids Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van den Audernaerde and Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels, also formed an important part of the diet. There was seasonal variation of organisms selected for food and there were variations in the dietary items selected by different age groups. Accumulation of fat was found to correlate with seasonal feeding intensity. E. niloticus serves as food for other fishes.  相似文献

This study describes a micro-assay, based on acid dichromate oxidation, with a resolution of at least 0.5 μg organic carbon and an upper limit of ≤20 μg C. We also document several important properties of acid dichromate assays and establish their effectiveness for quantifying organic carbon and energy content of marine and freshwater organisms. Both the micro-assay and the previously described standard assay are highly sensitive to chloride: absorbance readings were significantly depressed by the presence of only 0.5–1.0 μl of seawater, and the effect of seawater was shown to be due to its chloride content. The amount of chloride contained within the bodies of very small marine organisms may therefore be sufficient to interfere with the assay. Contrary to previous claims, we found that incubating samples with phosphoric acid did not prevent chloride from interfering with the assays. The micro- and standard assays were not sensitive to inorganic carbon and were therefore specific to organic carbon. The assays were effective in estimating total energy content of carbohydrate and lipid material, but underestimated the energy content of protein material by 47–69%. This limitation can be overcome by using a protein micro-assay to correct for underestimation by the acid dichromate assays. Based on our findings, the reliability of acid dichromate oxidation assays for analysing samples of marine organisms is questionable. The assays are effective, however, for analysing chloride-free tissues or extracts. In addition, the assays have considerable potential for determining energy content of small freshwater organisms. In particular, the micro-assay is at least an order of magnitude more sensitive than the standard assay, and constitutes a relatively simple way of measuring energy content of very small samples, such as individual embryos or early juveniles of aquatic animals and plants. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Haemolymph volume does not change significantly during 96 hr of starvation. Haemolymph and fat body metabolites are depleted significantly in insects denied food for 96 hr. The percentage of oöcyte resorption is increased considerably by starvation. Differences in the utilization of lipid and protein under conditions of starvation between adult Oxya and adult locusts may be attributed to the migratory habit of the latter.  相似文献

The reproductive biology ofBarbus holubi, B. kimberleyensis, Labeo capensis andL. umbratus was examined in a large reservoir on the Orange River, South Africa. The findings are integrated into the existing knowledge on largeBarbus andLabeo species, which coexist in most river systems in Africa and Asia.LargeBarbus spawn on gravel beds within the river channel during floods in spring or summer. In continuously flowing regulated rivers, time of spawning is governed by water temperatures. They have moderate fecundity; large eggs, incubation time of several days and the larvae are initially immobile with large yolk sacs. In the impoundment, they spawn in the inflowing regulated river withB. kimberleyensis spawning four to six weeks later than the more cold-tolerantB. holubi, the dominant largeBarbus. Survival is generally good and the juveniles disperse throughout the lake, but unseasonal release of cold water from an upstream impoundment may cause poor reproductive success. In contrast,Labeo species generally spawn on newly flooded ground, usually leaving the main river channel. Spawning may or may not be preceded by a longitudinal migration. Labeos are relatively fecund with small (30%Barbus size) eggs which hatch quickly and the larvae swim in bursts up into the water column before sinking down again.L. capensis does not require a longitudinal spawning migration and breeds throughout the lake, depending on local conditions. Large temporal variation in gonadal development within the population can result in more than one spawning. Dispersal within the lake is poor.L. umbratus uses larger inflowing tributaries for spawning thanL. capensis and its juveniles have a much greater power of dispersal. Early dependence on external feeding and undependable occurrence of conditions for spawning and juvenile feeding makes for variable reproductive success.  相似文献

Old Fort Lake, a small (1.6 ha), shallow, and recreational water body in Delhi (India) was studied through monthly surveys in two consecutive years (January, 2000–December, 2001). Precipitation is the major source of water for this closed basin lake. In addition, ground water is used for replenishing the lake regularly. This alkaline, hyposaline hard water lake contains very high ionic concentration, especially of nitrates. Based on overall ionic composition, this lake can be categorized as chloride–sulfate alkaline waters with the anion sequence dominated by SO4 2− > Cl > HCO3 , and the cations by Mg++ > Ca++. The overall seasonal variability in physicochemical profile was largely regulated by the annual cycle of evaporation and precipitation, whereas the ground water largely influences its water quality. The lake exhibited phytoplankton-dominated turbid state due to dominance of the blue green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa. The persistent cyanobacterial blooms and the elevated nutrient levels are indicative of the cultural eutrophication of the lake. This study focuses on the relative importance of eutrophic vis-à-vis hyposaline conditions in determining the structure and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton species assemblages. A total of 52 zooplankton species were recorded and rotifers dominated the community structure qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The genus Brachionus comprised a significant component of zooplankton community with B. plicatilis as the most dominant species. The other common taxa were B. quadridentatus, B. angularis, Lecane grandis, L. thalera, L. punctata, Mesocyclops sp., and Alona rectangula. Multivariate data analysis techniques, Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) along with Monte Carlo Permutation Tests were used to determine the minimum number of environmental factors that could explain statistically significant (P < 0.05) proportions of variation in the species data. The significant variables selected by CCA were NH3–N followed by percent saturation of DO, COD, SS, BOD, NO2–N, rainfall, silicates, and PO4–P. The results indicate that the seasonal succession patterns of the zooplankton species were largely controlled by physicochemical factors related directly or indirectly to the process of eutrophication, whereas hyposaline conditions in the lake determined the characteristic species composition. Fatty acids (FAs) profiles and stable isotope signatures of the ghost shrimp, Trypaea australiensis and the soldier crab, Mictyris longicarpus were determined at an unvegetated sandbank of Southport (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia), in November 2005 and February 2006. Additionally, the FAs composition of the faeces and feeding pellets of M. longicarpus and the surface sediment at the study site were also analysed. Trypaea australiensis was found to selectively feed principally on benthic diatoms, as revealed by the high contribution of the marker lipid (20:5 (n‐3)) to tissue total FAs and the δ13C and δ15N isotopic signatures of shrimp tissues. Although the diet of T. australiensis did not change between the two sampling periods, the shrimps appeared to reduce their feeding activity in summer, presumably in relation to a restricted metabolism, as revealed by a decrease in the contribution of the microalgal markers in their tissues. The FAs composition of the tissues of the soldier crab indicated that bacteria and diatoms constituted the base of its diet (contributions of branched 15:0 and 17:0, 18:1 (n‐7) and 20:5 (n‐3)). However, the isotopic signatures of the crabs suggested that meiofauna may represent an intermediate link between the crab and these micro‐organisms.  相似文献

This study carried out within the framework of a multi-disciplinary project, aimed at highlighting the fundamental processes governing the functioning of the hypertrophic Yaoundé Municipal Lake. It was based on the hypothesis that, even within a small range of lake trophic status, important variations can occur in the species composition, biomass and photosynthetic activity of the phytoplankton size-fractions. For this purpose, samples were taken at weekly intervals from November 1996 to December 1997 at a fixed set of depths in the water column. Spatial-temporal fluctuations of some physical–chemical variables, associated with biological variables such as phytoplankton size-class species composition, phytoplankton size-class biomass, phytoplankton primary production and chlorophyll-a were analysed. The water transparency was low and rarely exceeded 100 cm. Conductivity values relatively higher increased generally from the top to the lake bottom. The oxygen deficiency, and sometimes anoxia, recorded from 2.5 m depth resulted in high quantities of ammonium nitrogen. Total phosphorus and total Kjeldahl nitrogen concentrations were characteristics of hypertrophic lakes. The fertility of this biotope favoured the development of a high phytoplanktonic community with remarkable physiological adaptations to the variations of the nutritive potentials of the lake, characterized by the size-structure of these organisms. Cells of small size (<12 μm) contributed up to 11.42% of the total phytoplanktonic biomass. Species with average size (12–45 μm), dominated by Chlamydomonas spp., represented a more significant contribution reaching up to 69.85%, whereas the cells of big size (>45 μm), mainly Euglenophyta, maintained the relatively most important biomass, accounting for up to 89.85% of the total phytoplanktonic biomass. Chlorophyll-a concentrations are among the highest reported for both fresh water and sea water, being a consequence of high proportions of Chlorophyta and Euglenophyta. This led to intense phytoplanktonic photosynthetic activity which continued throughout the year, even though it was confined to the upmost first meter of the water column. Analyses pointed out the allogenic nature of the functioning of this urban lake ecosystem, due to a poor waste management on the surrounding landscape. Handling editor: J. Padisak  相似文献
