In this study, we determine bone strontium, barium, and calcium, as well as zinc, copper, and iron, in prehispanic samples
belonging to adult individuals from the two main funerary caves from La Palma (Espigón and Barranco Porto), comparing them
with our own modern controls. We have found that the Ba/Sr molar ratio of the individuals from Barranco Porto are significantly

The pollen content of 31 honey samples from 19 different apiaries of El Hierro (Canary Islands) were subject to qualitative and quantitative melissopalynological analysis. The quantitative analysis demonstrated that 13% of the honey belonged to Maurizio Class I (<2?000?grains), 68% to Class II (2?000–10?000?grains) and 19% to Class III (10?000–50?000?grains). The pollen density ranges from 1?042?grains/g of honey to 24?478?grains/g with an average of 7?471?grains/g. According to the qualitative analysis, six honeys were typified as unifloral and 25 as multifloral. The unifloral honey samples were broken down as follows: two of heather (Erica arborea L.), two of Chamaecytisus proliferus (L. f.) Link‐type (“tagasaste”), one of Fabaceae (Genisteae sp.) and one of Lamiaceae Origanum vulgare L. ssp. virens (Hoffmanns. &; Link) Ietsw.‐type (thyme: Micromeria hyssopifolia Webb &; Berthel.). Honeydew elements were practically absent. Sixty‐nine pollen types were identified belonging to 42 families. The number of pollen types range between 18 and 39 (mean of 27.42). Foeniculum vulgare Mill.‐type pollen is present in all the samples. Galactites tomentosa Moench‐type, Echium plantagineum L., Echium L. sp., Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C. H. Stirt., Chamaecytisus proliferus ‐type and Origanum vulgare ssp. virens ‐type pollen were found in 96.8% of the samples. The sensorial analysis indicated that honey types are generally of good quality, because 62% were evaluated as very high (16%), high (23%), and good (23%). 相似文献

The review considers the roles of root and shoot tissues in transport and accumulation of heavy metals in plants of two contrast groups, i.e., excluders and hyperaccumulators. The regularities in distribution of cadmium, lead, nickel, and strontium are summarized. Effects of other cations, calcium in particular, on accumulation and distribution of heavy metals are analyzed. Specific patterns of metal distribution in hyperaccumulator plants are discussed together with morphological and functional features underlying the ability of plants to accumulate heavy metals in the aboveground organs. Based on the data available, the root and shoot tissues are classified according to their roles in transport and distribution of the metals examined. 相似文献

The secretive breeding behaviour of petrels makes monitoring their breeding populations challenging. To assess population trends of Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea, Bulwer’s Petrel Bulweria bulwerii and Macaronesian Shearwater Puffinus baroli in Tenerife from 1990 to 2010, we used data from rescue campaigns that aim to reduce the mortality of fledgling petrels attracted to artificial lights as proxies for trends in breeding population size. Despite increases in human population size and light pollution, the number of rescued fledglings of Cory’s Shearwater and Bulwer’s Petrel increased and remained stable, respectively, whereas numbers of rescued Macaronesian Shearwaters sharply declined. In the absence of more accurate population estimates, these results suggest a worrying decline in the Macaronesian Shearwater’s breeding population. 相似文献

The influence of exposure to lead and cadmium on serum concentrations of calcium, zinc, and copper was examined in 299 healthy Croatian men 20-55 years of age, including 143 workers in a lead battery factory and 156 control subjects. The interrelationship of blood lead, activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, erythrocyte protoporphyrin, blood cadmium, age, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption with respect to serum calcium, zinc, and copper levels was calculated by forward stepwise multiple regression. The results showed that chronic moderate exposure to lead decreased serum zinc, calcium and, to a lesser extent, copper levels. Exposure to cadmium occurred mostly through smoking and seemed to contribute to a decrease of serum zinc. All changes in serum concentrations of these essential elements were significant but remained within the normal range. The results suggest possible mechanisms of lead- and/or cadmium-induced adverse health effects in humans. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of heated power plant water on the uptake and retention of manganese, cadmium and lead in selected aquatic invertebrates, channel catfish, green sunfish, and aquatic macrophytes and to study the distribution of manganese, cadmium and lead in sediments and water of experimental power plant ponds.The study was accomplished by placing fingerling channel catfish and green sunfish in holding pens in two ponds, one an experimental pond and one a control pond. Whole fish and selected organs of channel catfish and green sunfish were analyzed during the study. The experimental pond received heated power plant water and was maintained 4–6° C above ambient temperature during the study. Sediments, water, Odonata nymphs, tubificid annelids, snails, leeches, fingernail clams and duckweed were also analyzed for the metals.A typical distribution profile for manganese, cadmium and lead in power plant cooling ponds was developed. 相似文献

The genetic structure of Apis mellifera populations from the Canary Islands has been assessed by mitochondrial (restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the intergenic transfer RNAleu-COII region) and nuclear (microsatellites) studies. These populations show a low level of genetic variation in terms of average number of alleles and degree of heterozygosity. Significant differences in the distribution of alleles were found in both data sets, confirming the genetic differentiation among some of the islands but not within them. Two mitochondrial haplotypes characteristic of the Canary Islands are found at high frequencies, although populations are introgressed by imported honeybees of eastern European C lineage. This introgression is rather high on Tenerife and El Hierro and low on Gran Canaria and La Gomera, whereas on La Palma it has not been recorded. The finding of microsatellite alleles characteristic of the eastern European lineage corroborates the genetic introgression. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the Canarian honeybees are differentiated from other lineages and provide genetic evidence of their African origin. 相似文献

A major difficulty in the study of the relationship between human population size and the environment has been placing the problem in a testable framework. Using data from the Marshall Islands, this article tests the proposition that population size and density are highly correlated with environmental variables, including rainfall and land area, through a complex series of socially mediated regulatory mechanisms. The parasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hym., Ichneumonidae) was fed either with Cd, Pb, and Cd+Pb —contaminated food or water. Body concentrations of heavy metal and effects on lifetime and respiration were studied. Cadmium at a concentration of 33 g per gram food or per ml water reduced life expectancy; whereas lead did such at 82 g per ml water only. Differences were found between sexes and modes of contamination concerning body concentrations of Cd and Pb. Lead affected respiration only via water contamination; whereas cadmium did such also via food contamination. Ecological consequences of the observations are discussed.
Zusammenfassung Pimpla turionellae L. (Hym., Ichneumonidae) wurde mit Blei (82 g/g) und Cadmium (33 g/g) bzw. deren Kombination über Futter oder Wasser belastet. Schwermetallgehalte sowie Auswirkungen auf Lebensdauer und Sauerstoffverbrauch wurden untersucht. Der Einfluß der Schwermetalle war nach Geschlecht bzw. nach Art der Kontamination verschieden. Cadmium wirkt schon bei geringen Konzentrationen verkürzend auf die Lebensdauer, Blei erst bei relativ hohen Konzentrationen. Bei Blei ergab sich eine Abnahme des Sauerstoffverbrauches nur bei Belastung über das Wasser, bei Cadmium hingegen bei beiden Kontaminationsarten. Überlegungen ökologischer Konsequenzen werden angestellt.相似文献

Samples of the meadow brown butterfly, Maniola jurtina , were collected from all five of the Canary Islands where it occurs. The butterflies were scored for several spotting characters on both fore- and hindwings and assessed for damage from predators.
The analysis reveals considerable interisland heterogeneity for spotting characters and suggests that the populations fall into two relatively distinct, homogeneous groups, which inhabit the islands of Gran Canaria and La Gomera, on the one hand, and Tenerife, El Hierro and La Palma, on the other.
The main predators are lizards and insectivorous birds. Predator damage is non-random in the following respects: males are more damaged than females; high spot male phenotypes are more damaged than low ones early in the flight period (April-May); symmetrical damage, probably acquired while resting, is commoner in females, while asymmetrical damage is more characteristic of males. Damage generally increases in both sexes through the flight period.
Comparison of the bulked Canary Island samples with museum material from North Africa and Iberia suggests that the former area is the more likely source of the island populations. The Eastern Canary Islands are the emerged tips of a continuous volcanic ridge running parallel to the northeastern African coast, originated by episodic volcanic eruptions that can be traced back to the Miocene and that, following a major period of quiescence and erosion, continued from the Pliocene to the present day. The islands have been periodically connected by eustatic sea-level changes resulting from Pleistocene glacial cycles. The ground-dwelling spider Dysdera lancerotensis Simon, 1907 occurs along the entire ridge, except on recent barren lavas and sand dunes, and is therefore an ideal model for studying the effect of episodic geological processes on terrestrial organisms. Nested clade and population genetic analyses using 39 haplotypes from 605 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase I sequence data, along with phylogenetic analyses including two additional mitochondrial genes, uncover complex phylogeographical and demographic patterns. Our results indicate that D. lancerotensis colonized the ridge from north to south, in contrast to what had been expected given the SSW-NNE trend of volcanism and to what had been reported for other terrestrial arthropods. The occurrence of several episodes of extinction, recolonization and expansion are hypothesized for this species, and areas that act as refugia during volcanic cycles are identified. Relaxed molecular clock methods reveal divergence times between main haplotype lineages that suggest an older origin of the northern islets than anticipated based on geological evidence. This study supports the key role of volcanism in shaping the distribution of terrestrial organisms on oceanic islands and generates phylogeographical predictions that warrant further research into other terrestrial endemisms of this fascinating region. 相似文献

Mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) are the major toxic metals released by coal mining activities in the surrounding environment. These metals get accumulated in the soils. The plants grown on the contaminated soil uptake these toxic metals in their roots and aerial parts. This study monitored the bioaccumulation of Hg and other three toxic metals in coal mine soil. The pot study of Hg accumulation in Brassica juncea showed that the extent of Hg uptake by roots and shoots of the plants grown on was high in the mature plant and Hg content in root was higher than the shoot. In the soil of unreclaimed overburden (OB) dump, the toxic metal content was higher than that of reclaimed OB dump which posed high ecological risk in the soil of unreclaimed OB dump. Bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) value showed that Hg was not accumulated in the leaves of Dalbergia sissoo L., Gmelina arborea, Peltaphorum inerme L., Cassia seamea L, and Acacia mangium L grown on coal mine soil. 相似文献

The distribution of metals within the hepatopancreas of Oniscus asellus (Crustacea, Isopoda) from two uncontaminated sites, and two sites contaminated with zinc, cadmium and lead, has been studied by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. The hepatopancreas contains two types of intracellular granule. The first type, in the S cells, are spherical granules which contain copper, sulphur and calcium. In woodlice from contaminated sites, these ‘copper’ granules, also contain zinc, cadmium and lead. The second type, in the B cells, are flocculent deposits which contain iron. In woodlice from contaminated sites, these ‘iron’ granules also contain zinc and lead. Moribund woodlice from contaminated sites have large numbers of ‘copper’ and ‘iron’ granules in the hepatopancreas and a fine deposit of zinc and lead on the membranes of the cells. There are numerous microorganisms in close association with the microvillous border of the hepatopancreas of woodlice from all four sites. Within the microorganisms of Oniscus asellus from contaminated sites, there are deposits of material which contain zinc, lead, calcium and phosphorus ‘Copper’ and ‘iron’ granules could have evolved as storage sites for essential metals to be utilized when demand from the body exceeds uptake from the food. Woodlice in contaminated sites may be able to ‘detoxify’ potentially harmful amounts of essential and non-essential metals by storing them in a relatively insoluble form within these granules. 相似文献

Interactions of cadmium (Cd) ions with bovine serum albumin (BSA), bovine hepatic metallothionein (MT), calf thymus histone
and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and bovine hepatic chromatins were studied in the presence and absence of divalent zinc (Zn),
copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), or lead (Pb) ions, using equilibrium dialysis at pH 7 and at 37°C. The BSA had 3.5 Cd-binding sites
with an apparent affinity constant of 1×105. The other metal ions inhibited the binding by reducing the affinity constant and the number of Cd-binding sites in BSA.
There were 6 high affinity and 13 low affinity Cd-binding sites in the MT. Zinc ions had poor efficacy in reducing the binding
of Cd to the MT. However, the Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions inhibited the Cd binding to a considerable extent, the former ions being more potent in this respect. Histone did not
bind Cd. There were two kinds of Cd-binding sites in DNA: One mole of Cd per four moles DNA-phosphorus at low affinity sites,
and one mole of Cd per 6.7 moles DNA-phosphorus at high affinity sites. Their apparent association constants were 8.3×105 and 4.4×106
M, respectively. The other metal ions had inhibitory effects on the binding of Cd to DNA. Histone reduced the Cd-DNA interactions
to only a minor extent. The other metal ions reduced the binding of Cd to DNA-histone complex to a small extent. Cadmium binds
to the euchromatin (Euch), heterochromatin (Het), and Euch-Het mixture almost equally. The other metal ions reduced the binding
maximally in Euch-Het followed next in order by Het and Euch. Cupric ions were the most potent inhibitors of the interactions
