We present a mathematical simplification for the evolutionary dynamics of a heritable trait within a two-sex population. This trait is assumed to control the timing of sex-specific life-history events, such as the age of sexual maturity and end of female fertility, and each sex has a distinct fitness trade-off associated with the trait. We provide a formula for the fitness landscape of the population and show a natural extension of the result to an arbitrary number of heritable traits. Our method can be viewed as a dynamical systems generalisation of the Price equation to include two sexes, age structure and multiple traits. We use this formula to examine the effect of grandmothering, whereby post-fertile females subsidise their daughter’s fertility by provisioning grandchildren. Grandmothering can drive a shift towards increasingly male-biased mating sex ratios due to a post-fertile life stage in females, while male fertility continues to older ages. Our fitness landscapes show a net increase in fitness for both males and females at longer lifespans, and as a result, we find that grandmothering alone provides an evolutionary trajectory to higher longevities.  相似文献

The effects of marriage, contraception, and post-partum lactational infecundability on fertility in Bangladesh are assessed by applying Bongaarts' formula to survey data for the period 1975-1985. Marriage is universal and age at marriage is low. Breastfeeding is prolonged and has a pronounced effect on fertility. The fertility-reducing effect of contraception increased over the period through increased use of modern methods. The total fertility rate (TFR) declined by 24% from 1975 to 1985. This study shows that the 3 major proximate determinants cannot account completely for variation in national fertility levels.  相似文献

Although there are generalized conceptual models that predict how above and belowground biomass increase during secondary succession after abandonment from agriculture, there are few data to test these models for fine roots (defined as ≤2 mm diameter) in tropical forests. We measured live and dead fine roots (0–10 cm depth) in 18 plots of regenerating tropical dry forest in Costa Rica that varied in age from 5 to 60 yrs, as well as in soil properties. We predicted that both stand age and soil fertility would affect fine roots, with greater values in older forests on low fertility soils. Across two sampling dates and locations, live fine roots varied from 0.35 to 3.53 Mg/ha and dead roots varied from 0.15 to 0.93 Mg/ha. Surprisingly, there was little evidence that surface fine roots varied between sampling dates or in relation to stand age. By contrast, total, live, and dead fine roots averaged across sampling dates within plots were negatively correlated with a multivariate index of soil fertility (Pearson correlations coefficients were ?0.64, ?0.58, and ?0.68, respectively; < 0.01) and other individual edaphic variables including pH, silt, calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, and phosphorus. These results suggest that soil fertility is a more important determinant of fine roots than forest age in tropical dry forests in Costa Rica, and that one‐way these plant communities respond to low soil fertility is by increasing fine roots. Thus, simple conceptual models of forest responses to abandonment from agriculture may not be appropriate for surface fine roots.  相似文献

Trajectories of maize nodal roots were studied to test the hypothesis that roots which appear on a common internode have similar geometrical characteristics, and to assess the effect of soil temperature on root trajectory. Treatments consisted of three sowing dates, a comparison between mulched and non-mulched soil, a replication of one sowing date for two years in two locations, and a comparison between two cultivars at one sowing date. All these sources of variation, except the cultivar, had an appreciable effect on the trajectories of roots which appeared on the first four internodes. The horizontal component of the trajectory differed significantly between treatments, ranging from 93 to 700 mm in roots which appeared on the second internode, and from 71 to 569 for those on the third internode. The original hypothesis had, therefore, to be rejected. Mean soil temperature during the 100°C.days after root appearance accounted for the differences in trajectory between location, year, sowing date and mulch treatments, and for the differences between internodes within each location. The critical period during which temperature affected root trajectory probably began at root appearance, and ended between 50 and 100°C days after root appearance, i.e. when the root was less than 100 mm long.  相似文献

不同肥力棕壤全氮和微生物量氮对外源玉米残体氮的响应   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
以棕壤玉米长期连作定位试验(27a)形成的高低两种肥力水平土壤为研究对象,采用~(15)N标记的玉米植株为试验试材,分别向两种土壤中加入玉米根、茎、叶(共8个处理),采用室内模拟培养与~(15)N同位素示踪技术,旨在弄清玉米根、茎、叶添加后不同肥力土壤全氮含量及微生物量氮的变化规律。结果表明:(1)添加玉米根、茎、叶后低肥力棕壤全氮含量提升幅度分别比高肥力棕壤高5.75%、4.77%和3.75%,外源新氮的贡献率分别比高肥力棕壤高3.54%、3.28%和2.49%,说明不同肥力土壤对玉米残体添加的响应程度不同,低肥力棕壤对外源新氮施入后的响应更敏感,固定能力更强。(2)在添加玉米残体的56d培养时间内,低肥力棕壤中微生物量氮平均增加0.83—0.98倍,高肥力棕壤中微生物量氮平均增加0.87—1.56倍,可以看出不同部位玉米植株添加后均能显著促进土壤微生物量氮的积累,说明外源有机物输入是刺激土壤微生物数量和活性的重要因素,并且在高肥力土壤中刺激作用更加显著。此外,高肥力土壤添加茎和叶处理微生物量氮显著高于根添加处理,但低肥力土壤中根、茎和叶添加处理土壤中微生物量氮之间无显著差异。外源有机氮输入对土壤氮库的贡献与土壤的肥力水平及不同残体部位自身的物质组成特性密切相关。  相似文献

Abstract. A method for describing root systems based on geomorphological techniques developed for river systems is described. Root systems, in common with other natural branching structures (rivers, bronchioles, trees), appear to obey Morton's Law of Branching: there is a constant ratio, the bifurcation or branching ratio, Rb, between the number of branches of a given order, Nu , and that of the next order. Nu+1 , In experiments where Poa annua , and Rumex cripus , were grown at two levels of fertility, the first-order roots (the youngest members in this system) were generally unresponsive to fertility, and differences in the root systems were largely the result of changes in the second-order roots, those formed at the junction of two first-order roots. These differences were reflected in the branching ratio, Rb Although it is possible to explain these results by a stochastic model of branch development, the Rb values for roots are higher than for other natural branching structures, and higher than the random model predicts. It is possible that a model based on optimum exploration of space may be more appropriate and provide a key to the factors governing root branching patterns.  相似文献

Two experiments examined the relation between mindfulness practice and cognitive rigidity by using a variation of the Einstellung water jar task. Participants were required to use three hypothetical jars to obtain a specific amount of water. Initial problems were solvable by the same complex formula, but in later problems ("critical" or "trap" problems) solving was possible by an additional much simpler formula. A rigidity score was compiled through perseverance of the complex formula. In Experiment 1, experienced mindfulness meditators received significantly lower rigidity scores than non-meditators who had registered for their first meditation retreat. Similar results were obtained in randomized controlled Experiment 2 comparing non-meditators who underwent an eight meeting mindfulness program with a waiting list group. The authors conclude that mindfulness meditation reduces cognitive rigidity via the tendency to be "blinded" by experience. Results are discussed in light of the benefits of mindfulness practice regarding a reduced tendency to overlook novel and adaptive ways of responding due to past experience, both in and out of the clinical setting.  相似文献

The yield data available from the author's series of investigations on vegetable nutrition in sand have been plotted against the concentrations of the elements concerned (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), and the curves so obtained have been discussed. Within the ranges of concentrations employed, it is observed that too much available nitrogen or, especially, available phosphorus, causes depressions in yields with the tops and/or roots of certain vegetables, turnip roots being particularly susceptible to too much available phosphorus; no case of over-employment of available potassium, however, is noted. The turnip is recommended as a type plant for indicating the state of soil fertility as regards available (nitric) nitrogen.  相似文献

This paper seeks to supply a hitherto missing link in the reconciliation of the discrete and continuous formulations of stable population theory—see, for example, Keyfitz (“Introduction to the Mathematics of Population,” Chap. 8, Addison-Wesley, Reading, Mass., 1968). We show that the real exponential component of the birth trajectory has a non-zero (in fact positive) coefficient. Consequently, there is no possibility that oscillatory terms in the series expression for the birth trajectory can be dominant. Sustainable enhancement in food production from less available arable land must encompass a balanced use of inorganic, organic, and biofertilizer sources of plant nutrients to augment and maintain soil fertility and productivity. The varied responses of microbial inoculants across fields and crops, however, have formed a major bottleneck that hinders its widespread adoption. This necessitates an intricate analysis of the inter-relationships between soil microbial communities and their impact on host plant productivity. The concept of “biased rhizosphere,” which evolved from the interactions among different components of the rhizosphere including plant roots and soil microflora, strives to garner a better understanding of the complex rhizospheric intercommunications. Moreover, knowledge on rhizosphere microbiome is essential for developing strategies for shaping the rhizosphere to benefit the plants. With the advent of molecular and “omics” tools, a better understanding of the plant-microbe association could be acquired which could play a crucial role in drafting the future “biofertilizers.” The present review, therefore aims to (a) to introduce the concepts of rhizosphere hotspots and microbiomes and (b) to detail out the methodologies for creating biased rhizospheres for plant-mediated selection of beneficial microorganisms and their roles in improving plant performance.

The relative significance of the accessory glands of the male reproductive tract in fertility is unclear. To clarify the role of the seminal vesicles, fertility and uterine sperm motility were determined before and after removal of seminal vesicles in the house mouse. After removal of seminal vesicles, the pregnancy rate (number of females pregnant/number of females X 100) was reduced and the time to birth was increased, while the average litter size was not changed. Fertilization, determined by examining the oocytes 30 h after mating, was highly variable after matings with males whose seminal vesicles were removed; in some cases none of the oocytes were fertilized. The motility of sperm recovered from the uterus 1 h after matings with males before and after seminal vesicle removal and sham operations was analyzed using a videomicrographic system. The motility of uterine sperm was less progressive with more lateral displacement of the head about the trajectory and a less linear trajectory after removal of the seminal vesicles. Sham-operated animals showed no consistent changes in motility of uterine sperm. The changes in sperm motility could contribute to the reduction in fertilization since sperm motility is necessary for transport in the female reproductive tract and interaction with the oocytes.  相似文献

The root cap is the gravity-perceiving organ of plant roots. The central statenchyma consists of polarly organized statocytes which are characterized by sedimentable amyloplasts and by a striking distal endoplasmic reticulum (e.r. complex). During the normal downwards orientated growth of the root, the amyloplasts are sedimented onto the e.r. complex. Some observations indicate that the amyloplasts stress the e.r. complex by their sedimentation. The stress possibly influences the structural and functional state of the e.r. membranes. Therefore, graviperception is probably a function of differential stress on the e.r. complexes. The amyloplasts are partly or totally separated from the e.r. complex under experimental conditions such as deviations of the roots from the perpendicular between 30 and 180 degrees, rotation of the roots on the horizontal klinostat at 2 rev/min and at 55-120 rev/min, and placing the roots into an electric field at 2000-3000 V/cm. These are important facts for an understanding of the nature of graviperception. Spacelab experiments may help to verify the interpretation of results obtained in the experiments in simulated weightlessness.  相似文献

Sperm head morphometry is a parameter in the evaluation of semen that has been associated with fertility in two ways: comparing morphometric measures between predefined groups of fertility; or analyzing morphometric data by multivariate techniques to identify cell populations. We analyzed the morphometry of ram sperm head by three procedures and checked its relationship with male fertility. A Computer-Aided Sperm Morphometric Assessment procedure (CASMA), an image analysis software (NIS-Elements) in combination with an optical microscope (MO-NIS) and this image analysis software in combination with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-NIS) were used. Eight morphometric parameters were assessed: length, width, area, perimeter, ellipticity, form factor, elongation and regularity. We observed significant differences between the morphometric data of sperm head obtained with three study procedures. The CASMA procedure shows the highest values for all parameters and the SEM-NIS procedure the lowest. The analysis of a semen sample, when only the mean of morphometric parameters is used to describe the cell population, is too limited to interpret their fertilizing capacity. It is essential to analyze the complex structure of the samples by defining subpopulations by multivariate methods. With few exceptions, the means of each morphometric parameter differ between the three subpopulations analyzed in each procedure. Only the subpopulations obtained with the MO-NIS procedure showed a significant correlation with male fertility. In short, it is necessary to establish an instrumental standard for the analysis of sperm morphometry to obtain reliable results and we believe that the MO-NIS system presents these basic requirements.  相似文献

Aggregation of variables of a complex mathematical model with realistic structure gives a simplified model which is more suitable than the original one when the amount of data for parameter estimation is limited. Here we explore use of a formula derived for a single unstructured population (canonical model) in predicting the extinction time for a population living in multiple habitats. In particular we focus multiple populations each following logistic growth with demographic and environmental stochasticities, and examine how the mean extinction time depends on the migration and environmental correlation. When migration rate and/or environmental correlation are very large or very small, we may express the mean extinction time exactly using the formula with properly modified parameters. When parameters are of intermediate magnitude, we generate a Monte Carlo time series of the population size for the realistic structured model, estimate the "effective parameters" by fitting the time series to the canonical model, and then calculate the mean extinction time using the formula for a single population. The mean extinction time predicted by the formula was close to those obtained from direct computer simulation of structured models. We conclude that the formula for an unstructured single-population model has good approximation capability and can be applicable in estimating the extinction risk of the structured meta-population model for a limited data set.  相似文献

This article reviews recent developments in in situ bioremediation of trace metal contaminated soils, with particular reference to the microbial dynamics in the rhizospheres of plants growing on such soils and their significance in phytoremediation. In non-agricultural conditions, the natural role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), P-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal-helping bacteria (MHB) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in maintaining soil fertility is more important than in conventional agriculture, horticulture, and forestry where higher use of agrochemicals minimize their significance. These microbes initiate a concerted action when a particular population density is achieved, i.e. quorum sensing. AMF also recognize their host by signals released by host roots, allowing a functional symbiosis. AM fungi produce an insoluble glycoprotein, glomalin, which sequester trace elements and it should be considered for biostabilization leading to remediation of contaminated soils. Conclusions drawn from studies of metal uptake kinetics in solution cultures may not be valid for more complex field conditions and use of some combination of glasshouse and field experiments with organisms that occur within the same plant community is suggested. Phytoextraction strategies, such as inoculation of plants to be used for phytoremediation with appropriate heavy metal adapted rhizobial microflora, co-cropping system involving a non-mycorrhizal hyperaccumulator plant and a non-accumulator but mycorrhizal with appropriate AMF, or pre-cropping with mycotrophic crop systems to optimize phytoremediation processes, merit further field level investigations. There is also a need to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in transfer and mobilization of trace elements by rhizosphere microbiota and to conduct research on selection of microbial isolates from rhizosphere of plants growing on heavy metal contaminated soils for specific restoration programmes. This is necessary if we are to improve the chances of successful phytoremediation.  相似文献
