High-frequency pacing of the left ventricle (LV) free wall causes a dyssynchronous pattern of contraction that leads to progressive heart failure (HF) with pronounced differences in regional contractility. Aim of this study was to evaluate possible changes in brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) mRNA expression in the anterior/anterior lateral region (pacing site, PS) as compared to the infero-septal region (opposite site, OS) and to explore possible association between the contractiling pattern and biomarker expression. Cardiac tissue was collected from minipigs with pacing-induced HF (n = 8) and without (control, n = 6). The samples were selectively harvested from the anterior left ventricular (LV) wall, PS, and from an area remote to the pacing-site, OS. BNP and CNP mRNA expression was evaluated by semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A significant difference in BNP expression was found in the PS between HF animals and controls (BNP/GAPDH: 0.65 ± 0.11 vs. 0.35 ± 0.04, p = 0.02), but not in the OS (BNP/GAPDH: 0.36 ± 0.05, ns vs. controls). CNP expression was not different compared to controls, although higher levels were observed in the PS and in the OS with respect to the controls (CNP/GAPDH: controls 0.089 ± 0.036, PS 0.289 ± 0.23, OS 0.54 ± 0.16). This finding was in tune with an increase of CNP tissue concentration (controls: 0.69 ± 0.13; PS = 1.56 ± 0.19; OS = 1.70 ± 0.42 pg/mg protein; p = 0.039 controls vs. OS). Higher BNP mRNA expression in the PS is consistent with a reduction in contractile function in this region, while higher CNP mRNA expression in the OS suggests the presence of concomitant endothelial dysfunction in the remote region.  相似文献

Summary Time spent in territorial defense was measured during territory establishment for non-breeding Black-chinned (Archilochus alexandri) and Anna's (Calypte anna) hummingbirds. Newly established territory holders spent more time chasing intruders than neighboring established owners, which served as controls. This higher investment in defense by the new owners was due to 1) a longer time spent per each chase and 2) in some cases, a higher frequency of chases at the onset of territory ownership.  相似文献

Context-dependent foraging decisions in rufous hummingbirds   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
A core assumption implicit in economic models of animal choice is that subjects assign absolute utilities to options that are independent of the type and number of alternatives available. Humans sometimes appear to violate this assumption and employ relative, as opposed to absolute, currencies when making choices. Recent evidence suggests that animals too might sometimes employ relative choice mechanisms. We tested this idea by measuring the foraging preferences of rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus) faced with choices analogous to those in which human use of relative currencies is evident. The birds experienced three treatments: a binary choice between two artificial flower types designated concentration (20 microl, 40% sucrose solution) and volume (40 microl, 20%), and two trinary treatments in which a third decoy option (either concentration decoy: 10 microl, 30% or volume decoy: 30 microl, 10%) was added to the set. The birds' preferences differed significantly across the three treatments. In the trinary treatments, the effect of the decoy options was to increase the preference for the option that dominated the decoy. These results are similar to those reported in the human choice literature, and are compatible with the hummingbirds using a relative evaluation mechanism in decision making.  相似文献

For five species of hummingbirds in the laboratory, time between meals was related to energy intake on the first meal and rate of energy expenditure between meals. Field observations gave similar results. Average meal sizes were similar at one intake rate independent of food caloric density; females averaged longer bouts than males. When rate of intake was approximately halved, meal duration approximately doubled and volume intake remained similar. We postulate that feeding is initiated when crop contents reach a lower threshold and that feeding is terminated after ingestion of an optimal volume determined by the added weight of the meal.  相似文献

Many examples highlight the power of gene expression profiles, or signatures, to inform an understanding of biological phenotypes. This is perhaps best seen in the context of cancer, where expression signatures have tremendous power to identify new subtypes and to predict clinical outcomes. Although the ability to interpret the meaning of the individual genes in these signatures remains a challenge, this does not diminish the power of the signature to characterize biological states. The use of these signatures as surrogate phenotypes has been particularly important, linking diverse experimental systems that dissect the complexity of biological systems with the in vivo setting in a way that was not previously feasible.  相似文献

Genetically identical cells exposed to the same environmental conditions can show significant variation in molecular content and marked differences in phenotypic characteristics. This variability is linked to stochasticity in gene expression, which is generally viewed as having detrimental effects on cellular function with potential implications for disease. However, stochasticity in gene expression can also be advantageous. It can provide the flexibility needed by cells to adapt to fluctuating environments or respond to sudden stresses, and a mechanism by which population heterogeneity can be established during cellular differentiation and development.  相似文献

The Andes are known to have influenced speciation patterns in many taxa, yet whether species diversification occurred simultaneously with their uplift or only after uplift was complete remains unknown. We examined both the phylogenetic pattern and dates of branching in Adelomyia hummingbirds in relation to Andean uplift to determine whether diversification coincides with the chronological phases of the uplift or with recent climatic fluctuations after Andean formation. Results suggest that the genus Adelomyia originated in the central Andes in the Miocene and was found to be comprised of six deeply divergent phylogroups dating between 3.5 and 6 Ma. The most basal splits in the tree, corresponding to the most southerly distributed of the six phylogroups, diverged in the late Miocene, whereas the northern phylogroups originated during the early-to-mid-Pliocene, when the northern Andes reached heights sufficient to support Adelomyia populations. Although we provide evidence for a southern origin for the group, the subsequent diversification of the northern phylogroups did not strictly follow the hypothesized south-to-north orogeny of the Andes. Further genetic structure within phylogroups may have resulted from Pleistocene climate fluctuations after the onset of the six lineages during the Mio-Pliocene. We explore the processes that promoted diversification in the Andes and suggest that in at least some groups, divergence was coupled to Andean orogeny.  相似文献

It has often been suggested that the genome sizes of birds are constrained relative to other tetrapods owing to the high metabolic demands of powered flight and the link between nuclear DNA content and red blood cell size. This hypothesis predicts that hummingbirds, which engage in energy-intensive hovering flight, will display especially constrained genomes even relative to other birds. We report genome size measurements for 37 species of hummingbirds that confirm this prediction. Our results suggest that genome size was reduced before the divergence of extant hummingbird lineages, and that only minimal additional reduction occurred during hummingbird diversification. Unlike in some other avian taxa, the small amount of variation observed within hummingbirds is not explained by variation in respiratory and flight-related parameters. Unexpectedly, genome size appears to have increased in four unrelated hummingbird species whose distributions are centred on humid forests of the upper-tropical elevational zone on the eastern slope of the Andes. This suggests that the secondary expansion of the genome may have been mediated by biogeographical and demographic effects.  相似文献

The hummingbird beak, specialized for feeding on floral nectars, is also uniquely adapted to eating flying insects. During insect capture the beak often appears to close at a rate that cannot be explained by direct muscular action alone. Here we show that the lower jaw of hummingbirds has a shape and compliance that allows for a controlled elastic snap. Furthermore, hummingbirds have the musculature needed to independently bend and twist the sides of the lower jaw. According to both our simple physical model and our elastic instability calculation, the jaw can be smoothly opened and then snapped closed through an appropriate sequence of bending and twisting actions by the muscles of the lower jaw.  相似文献

Hormonal reassignment has two aims: (1) to reduce the hormonally induced secondary sex characteristics of the original sex and (2) to induce the secondary sex characteristics of the new sex. In Europe, cyproterone acetate is generally used to inhibit androgens in male-to-female transsexuals. Medroxyprogesterone acetate is an acceptable, though less effective, alternative. To induce feminization there is a wide range of oestrogens. Oral ethinyloestradiol is a potent and inexpensive oestrogen, but it may cause venous thrombosis. Oral 17beta-oestradiol valerate or transdermal 17beta-oestradiol is the treatment of choice. The goal of treatment in female-to-male transsexuals is to induce virilization, including a male pattern of sexual hair, a male voice and male physical contours, and to stop menses. The principal hormonal treatment is a testosterone preparation. Hormone-dependent tumours have been encountered and surveillance is necessary.  相似文献

Animals organize their lives around circannual and circadian rhythms, but little is known of their use of much shorter intervals. In the laboratory, some animals can learn the specific duration (seconds or minutes) between periods of food access. It has been supposed that wild nectarivores, such as hummingbirds, might also learn short time intervals so as to avoid revisiting emptied flowers until the nectar has been replenished. We provided free-living, territorial rufous hummingbirds each with eight artificial flowers containing sucrose solution. Four flowers were refilled 10 min after the bird emptied them, and the other four were refilled 20 min after being emptied. Throughout the day, birds revisited the 10 min flowers significantly sooner than they revisited the 20 min flowers, and return visits to the flowers matched their refill schedules. Hummingbirds remembered the locations and timing of eight rewards, updating this information throughout the day. Not only is this the first time that this degree of timing ability has been shown in wild animals, but these hummingbirds also exhibit two of the fundamental aspects of episodic-like memory (where and when), the kind of memory for specific events often thought to be exclusive to humans.  相似文献

Despite the recent improvement in the design of male-to-female sex reassignment operations to enlarge the vaginal vault and depth, the size of the neovagina remains somewhat limited and the exterior of the neovagina may be compressed by the bony structure of pubic rami. The purpose of this study was to determine by anatomic study the possible cause of this limitation. Eighteen male and 10 female cadavers were dissected to measure the distance between the bilateral bony pubic rami (interramic distance) at a level that corresponds to the same level in the vaginal canal of females. At the same level of the vaginal canal in the female, which corresponds to the lower border of the prostate in the male, empirically 3 cm below the bony symphysis pubis, the mean value of the interramic distance was 3.95 +/- 0.25 cm in the male and 5.20 +/- 0.36 cm in the female (p = 0.000). The interramic distance in the male and female is significantly different. In those who have undergone the male-to-female transsexual operation, the newly structured vagina may be ventrolaterally limited. Several factors cause narrowing of the vaginal orifice in male-to-female transsexuals. On the basis of this study, it seems that the bony structure of the pubic rami compresses the vagina ventrolaterally. This finding may suggest refinements of the structural design of the neovagina and prompt procedural changes in male-to-female sex reassignment operations. Future investigation should be directed toward modifying vaginoplasty so that neovaginal width can be increased to the patient's satisfaction.  相似文献

In cell division of high-frequency-selfers in the ciliate Blepharisma japonicum, daughter cells are different in mating-type expression. The anterior daughter cell is mating type I. The posterior daughter cell is mating type II at first and then changes to mating type I after about 24 h. The anteroposterior polarity of predivision cells appears to correlate with the asymmetrical cell division. This work introduces a unicellular organism about the size of microscopic metazoa as a model system for the study of asymmetrical cell division, which is particularly important in developmental processes.  相似文献
