During 2006 to 2008, the water, sediment and fish in Albasini Dam, used as a reference site outside a DDT-sprayed area, had been found to be as affected as those in the nearby DDT-sprayed area were. Accordingly, the aim of the current study, conducted in 2014, was to determine the health status of fish from Albasini Dam by means of a histology-based fish health assessment protocol. High levels of nitrates, as well as the organochlorine pesticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane and methoxychlor, were found in the water. Fish muscle tissue contained pesticides, including methoxychlor. A semi-quantitative histological assessment on Clarias gariepinus, Coptodon rendalli and Oreochromis mossambicus showed diverse histopathology in selected target organs, with the gills being most affected. Notably, the testis tissue of one C. rendalli was filled with eosinophilic liquid, characteristic of necrosis. Microscopic intersex was found in two of the nine O. mossambicus sampled. This is the second time that intersex as microscopic testicular oocytes has been reported in O. mossambicus in South Africa. This finding perhaps indicates that reproduction may be compromised and this will be investigated further. The presence of intersex and other histopathology in organs could be early warning signs of the declining water quality in this dam.  相似文献

Three aquatic ecosystems in South Africa, the Hartbeespoort, Klipvoor and Bospoort Dams, are classified as hyper-eutrophic, because of high nutrient loads and chemical pollution. Water and two fish species, Clarias gariepinus and Cyprinus carpio, were collected from these dams to assess the impact of eutrophication and chemical pollutants on their health status. Water and muscle samples were analysed for organic and inorganic chemicals. Condition factor was determined and a necropsy performed to note any macroscopic abnormalities. A histology-based fish health assessment was done on the liver, kidney, gills and gonads. A number of fish from the three dams exhibited livers with fatty change and focal discoloration, skin lesions and parasites within the visceral cavity. The prevalence and severity of histopathology in the liver resulted in higher liver index values than the index values for kidneys and gills. Aluminium, silicon and chromium were detected in the water and muscle tissue. The DDT metabolite p,p’-DDE was present in both species, as well as in fish from the reference site, Marico-Bosveld Dam. Only C. gariepinus from Hartbeespoort Dam had p,p’-DDD levels higher than 5 µg g?1 per edible portion. Water from hyper-eutrophic dams adversely affects the health of freshwater fish.  相似文献

A pilot investigation was conducted in 2014 in the Sanyati Basin of Lake Kariba to ascertain whether long-term DDT spraying in the Kariba catchment had a negative effect on fish health. The aim was to assess the health of tigerfish, Hydrocynus vittatus, by means of histological analysis and to analyse water, sediment and tissue samples for bioaccumulated levels of chlorinated pesticides, including DDT. Eighteen tigerfish were collected by seine netting along the north-eastern shoreline of the Sanyati Basin in April 2014 and samples of their gill, liver, kidney, muscle and brain tissue were processed for histology and assessed using light microscopy. No detectable levels of DDT and/or its metabolites were found in the water or sediment samples and only a low concentration of p,p′-DDE in fish tissues. No major histological alterations were observed in the fish tissues. Consequently, there seems to be no risk of DDT exposure following the consumption of tigerfish from the Sanyati Basin of Lake Kariba. These results were unexpected, given the historical use of DDT within the current study area. It is recommended that these findings be compared with those from other regions of Lake Kariba.  相似文献

Muscle tissue from 63 Synodontis zambezensis collected bimonthly in 2013 at Flag Boshielo Dam were analysed for metals and metalloids in a desktop human health risk assessment. The Hazard Quotient, based on a weekly meal of 67 g of fish muscle, exceeded the maximum acceptable level of one for lead, cobalt, cadmium, mercury, arsenic and selenium. The concentrations of these elements were higher in 2013 than those recorded in 2009 and 2012 in other fish species from Flag Boshielo Dam and these may pose a long-term health risk if consumed regularly by impoverished rural communities reliant on fish as a source of protein.  相似文献

A histology-based fish health assessment protocol was used in 2009–2010 to assess the health status of Clarias gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam, South Africa. Nineteen fish were collected by angling. The histology of liver, kidney, gills and testes or ovaries was semi-quantitatively assessed and compared to that of fish from a reference site in the Okavango Panhandle, Botswana. Necropsy observations indicated that C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in poorer condition than those from the Okavango Panhandle. Microscopic analysis showed that the mean liver index (I L), gill index (I G), testis index (I T) and ovary index (I O) were higher, although not statistically significant, in fish from the Okavango Panhandle. The difference in the results between the necropsy-based observations and semi-quantitative histological results was due to the external abnormalities detected in the necropsy analysis, including parasites and skin lesions, not expressing as changes to cell and tissue structure. According to the parameters measured, C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in a healthy state.  相似文献

We present the findings of a participatory experiment on integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems (Fingerponds) at the Lake Victoria wetlands, Kenya. Fingerponds are flood-based lacustrine or floodplain wetland fishponds. The aim of the study was to explore, within a wetland/floodplain interface environment, the potential of semi-intensive fish production to enhance the wetland fishery and protect the natural ecosystem from wide-scale, destructive encroachment. The ponds were stocked naturally by flood water. After flood recession, livestock manure was added to the ponds and the effects of manuring on water and sediment quality and fish yields were studied. Manuring had positive effects on the nitrogen, phosphorous and chlorophyll a concentrations of the pond water. Regression analysis results indicated that site, manuring and environmental and climatic variables explained 58–70% of the variation in dissolved nitrogen and phosphorous, and 71% of the variation in chorophyll a. Manuring enhanced the total phosphorus concentration in the sediment but it only had marginal effects on total nitrogen. Although the net fish yields were highly variable between sites and seasons, ranging from 402 to 1069 kg ha−1, the data showed that manuring was advantageous. The duration of the culture period, site variability and manuring explained 82% of the variation in fish yields. We conclude that Fingerponds fertilized with livestock manure from abutting riparian subsistence agriculture can improve fish production, enhance food diversity and security and contribute to more efficient use of papyrus wetlands for food production. This in turn may reduce large-scale conversion of wetlands to agriculture.  相似文献

养殖池塘富营养化是目前制约我国淡水养殖业可持续发展的关键因素。稻作系统具有显著的净化水质能力,如何将稻作系统和淡水养殖系统进行生态耦合实现氮、磷养分的循环利用,是淡水养殖池塘富营养化生态修复的一个重要研究方向。通过文献调研和实地考察,综合分析了浮床种稻-原位修复、稻田湿地-异位修复、稻鱼生态种养3种耦合方式对养殖池塘富营养化的修复效应,以及氮、磷养分综合利用效率,归纳总结了不同模式的技术特点以及应用中存在的问题,并就修复技术研究和生态补偿提出了培育生态修复专用水稻品种,加强稻作系统生态修复理论研究和技术推广,建立养殖池塘富营养化修复的生态补偿机制等建议。  相似文献

Beavers (Castor canadensis) can cause dramatic changes in vegetative composition and diversity. Although alterations by beaver have been studied extensively, little attention has been paid to the effects beaver impoundments have on rare plants. Effective conservation of riparian and wetland rare plant species must consider the responses of vegetation to changes in hydrology that can occur when beaver populations are present. The goal of this research was to establish the occurrence of locally rare plant species, examine community composition, and analyze vegetative community structure of vegetation associated with beaver ponds in Canaan Valley, West Virginia, USA. Species richness and diversity were similar between plots located inside beaver ponds and adjacent to beaver ponds (P > 0.05). Although no significant difference in rare plant species was detected among pond ages, the oldest ponds (>56 years) had twice as many rare species as the youngest ponds (≤6 years). The youngest ponds had higher overall mean species richness (S) than ponds 7–56 years old (P < 0.05), but S returned to similar levels in the oldest ponds. Of the 15 rare species observed, most were classified as obligate (9) or facultative wetland (4) species. The youngest ponds contained the fewest number of rare species. Multiple response permutation procedure (MRPP) analyses of community structure detected no relation between community composition and either pond age or size. However, both MRPP and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling showed proximity to pond was important in herbaceous community structure. Wetlands in beaver ponds also were shown to be distinct from adjacent wetland areas. Conservation of existing beaver populations is necessary so that the entire spectrum of pond ages is available for the maintenance of rare plant species and communities.  相似文献

We used customized fish tanks as model fish ponds to observe grazing, swimming, and conspecific social behavior of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) under variable food-resource conditions to assess alterations in feeding niche. Different food and feeding situations were created by using only pond water or pond water plus pond bottom sediment or pond water plus pond bottom sediment and artificial feeding. All tanks were fertilized twice, prior to stocking and 2 weeks later after starting the experiment to stimulate natural food production. Common carp preferred artificial feed over benthic macroinvertebrates, followed by zooplankton. Common carp did not prefer any group of phytoplankton in any treatment. Common carp was mainly benthic in habitat choice, feeding on benthic macroinvertebrates when only plankton and benthic macroinvertebrates were available in the system. In the absence of benthic macroinvertebrates, their feeding niche shifted from near the bottom of the tanks to the water column where they spent 85% of the total time and fed principally on zooplankton. Common carp readily switched to artificial feed when available, which led to better growth. Common carp preferred to graze individually. Behavioral observations of common carp in tanks yielded new information that assists our understanding of their ecological niche. This knowledge could be potentially used to further the development of common carp aquaculture.  相似文献

The Olifants River, a tributary of the Limpopo River system, is one of the most polluted rivers in South Africa. In May 2011 the concentrations of metals in fish muscle tissue from two impoundments, Loskop and Flag Boshielo dams, on the Olifants River were measured and a human health risk assessment conducted to investigate whether it was safe to consume Labeo rosae from these impoundments. Labeo rosae is one of the most common pan fish in these impoundments and is readily available to rural communities. Metals are accumulating in the muscle tissue of L. rosae even although the fish populations appear to be healthy. At Loskop Dam all L. rosae analysed exceeded the recommended hazard quotient (HQ) of 1 for antimony, and less than 50% exceeded that for lead. At Flag Boshielo Dam, the recommended HQ was exceeded for lead in less than 50% of L. rosae analysed, and more than 50% exceeded that for antimony. The weekly consumption of 150?g of L. rosae muscle tissue from these impoundments may pose an unacceptable health risk to rural communities.  相似文献

The impact of wastewater effluent from a sewage treatment works (STW) on the health of brown trout held in cages and wild brown trout in a river was investigated. Biochemical, histological, and organismal responses as well as parasite abundances were monitored and then analyzed using multivariate analyses. Stress responses in trout induced by the water quality of the river upstream of the STW were enhanced by the discharge of the STW. For caged fish, the serum chemistry values alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine, as well as histological indices of gills and liver, were most effective at distinguishing among fish held in river water, a mixture of river water and wastewater, and tap water. For wild fish, total protein, histological liver alterations and abundance of two parasites (sessile peritrichia, Sphaerospora sp.) were the most indicative parameters for discriminating the health of fish between sites upstream and downstream of the STW. Considering the relationships between the measured parameters concurrently, the multivariate discriminant analysis is an effective method to evaluate which combination of parameters provide the best discrimination between the treatment groups. In contrast to the calculation of group differences based on individual responses, the integrated responses of parameters representing different biological levels lead to a more comprehensive assessment of organismal health and a more accurate distinction in differences between treatment groups.  相似文献

The present study investigated the presence of Chinese sturgeon Acipenser sinensis on its only remaining spawning ground (below the Gezhauba Dam), and monitored the behaviour under different environmental conditions from 24 December 2015 to 23 January 2016. A fixed ARIS (Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar) system was used and a total of 72 Chinese sturgeon were detected during nine observations. Detections initially recorded a few A. sinensis in the early days of late‐December 2015, with an increase in recordings, leading to a peak in early‐January 2016 and declining thereafter. Water temperature slowly decreased during the study period from 18.1 to 15.7°C. During the middle of this temperature decline the sturgeon observations peaked, suggesting that Chinese sturgeon could have an optimal temperature range. The sturgeon Detections Per Unit Effort (DPUE) was higher in the night hours, peaking before dawn, suggesting a circadian behaviour rhythm. Sturgeon spawning was not observed during the investigation period. A delay in the decrease in water temperature caused by the Three Gorges Reservoir and the few numbers of reproductively mature individuals are suspected to have contributed to the failure in natural breeding.  相似文献

This study evaluated the seasonal accumulation of boron and fluoride in different tissues of a common edible fish, Tilapia nilotica, from an Egyptian fish farm as well as their hazard to human health. Among all the determined fish tissues, brain, liver, and bone were the ones that accumulated the highest boron and fluoride contents. Interestingly, flesh tissue showed the lowest boron and fluoride concentrations (0.30 ± 0.06 and 2.50 ± 1.57 μg/g, respectively). Statistical analyses using Pearson correlation matrix and multiple regression procedures indicated that boron accumulation was highest amongst flesh, liver, brain, and bone tissues. Additionally, fluoride content in water affects its abundance in the different fish tissues: flesh, gills, bone, and skin. Human hazard assessment of fluoride and boron from water, sediment, and fish flesh tissue was studied using calculations that considered chronic daily intake from water, sediment, and fish; chronic exposure from dermal contact and ingestion of water; and fish as well as a single acute human dose. These calculations indicated that the consumption of Tilapia nilotica is still safe as regards boron intake, but for fluoride, it may pose a hazard to human health in the long term.  相似文献

Extensive ephemeral wetlands at Poyang Lake, created by dramatic seasonal changes in water level, constitute the main wintering site for migratory Anatidae in China. Reductions in wetland area during the last 15 years have led to proposals to build a Poyang Dam to retain high winter water levels within the lake. Changing the natural hydrological system will affect waterbirds dependent on water level changes for food availability and accessibility. We tracked two goose species with different feeding behaviors (greater white‐fronted geese Anser albifrons [grazing species] and swan geese Anser cygnoides [tuber‐feeding species]) during two winters with contrasting water levels (continuous recession in 2015; sustained high water in 2016, similar to those predicted post‐Poyang Dam), investigating the effects of water level change on their habitat selection based on vegetation and elevation. In 2015, white‐fronted geese extensively exploited sequentially created mudflats, feeding on short nutritious graminoid swards, while swan geese excavated substrates along the water edge for tubers. This critical dynamic ecotone successively exposes subaquatic food and supports early‐stage graminoid growth during water level recession. During sustained high water levels in 2016, both species selected mudflats, but also to a greater degree of habitats with longer established seasonal graminoid swards because access to tubers and new graminoid growth was restricted under high‐water conditions. Longer established graminoid swards offer less energetically profitable forage for both species. Substantial reduction in suitable habitat and confinement to less profitable forage by higher water levels is likely to reduce the ability of geese to accumulate sufficient fat stores for migration, with potential carryover effects on subsequent survival and reproduction. Our results suggest that high water levels in Poyang Lake should be retained during summer, but permitted to gradually recede, exposing new areas throughout winter to provide access for waterbirds from all feeding guilds.  相似文献

A study to assess and monitor the concentrations of sulphate, sodium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, iron and nitrate in Bunda Dam was carried out from May to November 1998. The same parameters, except nitrate and chloride, were also determined in the liver, gills, intestines and muscle of the fish Oreochromis shiranus from the same dam. Results showed that whilst the concentrations of all parameters in general were higher in September and October in the water, there were variations from month to month in the fish. Comparison of the overall concentrations in the water and fish showed that, for each parameter, there were higher concentrations (P<0.05) in the water than in the fish. Iron and magnesium were more concentrated in the liver while sulphate, calcium and sodium were more concentrated in the intestine. The concentrations of the parameters in both the water and the fish were below the hazard limits. The results suggest that the intensive farming activities taking place around the dam and the presence of the sewage pond nearby have no significant effect on the levels of chemicals in the dam water or its fish.  相似文献

The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and V in water, sediment and the gill, liver and muscle tissues of Synodontis resupinatus, Heterotis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus, all commercially important fish species of the lower Niger River, were investigated in 2015. Water, sediment and fish samples were collected for six months and heavy metals were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Fe ranked highest in water and sediment, with concentrations of 2.74 mg l?1 and 61.60 mg kg?1, respectively. Metals followed the magnitude of Fe > Mn > Ni > V > Pb in the water and Fe > Mn > V > Ni > Pb in the sediments. Metal concentrations were higher in the tissues of S. resupinatus compared with H. niloticus and C. gariepinus. Fe was also highest in the gills, liver and muscle of the three fish species. Its highest concentration of 132.97 mg kg?1 dry weight was recorded in the gills of S. resupinatus. Bioconcentration factors of metals ranged from 8.79 for Mn in H. niloticus muscle to 67.99 for Ni in S. resupinatus gills. The fish species studied pose no health risk for all metals studied, because the target hazard quotient was less than 1 and the estimated daily intakes of the metals were below the reference doses.  相似文献

Fish ponds in central and eastern Europe are artificial lakes of less than 1 ha to several 100 ha in size. Some of them were created around 900 years ago. These fish ponds form an important part of the hydrological system in the landscape; they also serve as water purification systems and sediment traps, provide habitat for many plant and animal species, as well as being used for recreation purposes—but above all, they are dedicated to fish production. The original oligo- or mesotrophic character of these fish ponds has been altered to one of eutrophic or even hypertrophic conditions due to the nature of the intensive management for high fish production, as well as agriculture practices within the catchment area. It can also be due to other uses of fish ponds, such as wastewater recipients. A thick layer of black anaerobic sediment invariably develops and serves as an uncontrolled internal source of nutrients. In order to stop the development of water blooms and restore the lake to reasonable healthy conditions, both the external and internal loading has to be reduced. An example of such a fish pond restoration within the Czech Republic is described. The phosphorus budget of the Vajgar fish pond (40 ha, S Bohemia) was evaluated and the dry matter, organic matter, nutrients, heavy metals and other metals content were estimated in the vertical profile of the fish pond's sediment. A precision suction dredger was designed, constructed, and used for the selective removal of 330 000 m3 black sediment from the Vajgar fish pond. The sediment was pumped to settling ponds at a distance of 2.5 km. Later, the suction dredger was used for sediment removal from other fish ponds. In one case, 40 000 m3 of eutrophic sediment was directly applied on an agriculture field. In another case, sediment containing oil products was decontaminated by using a biocatalyst and bacterial culture. Sediment removal from Vajgar fish pond resulted in a temporary negative phosphorus budget (lower concentrations in the outflow than the inflow). The temporary absence of cyanobacteria (Microcystis sp.) blooms was the result of the removal of the black sediment layer. The improvement of water quality after sediment removal was, however, temporary. A more holistic approach, aimed at the reduction of matter losses from the fish pond's catchment area, is therefore being adopted. The principles of such an holistic approach are described.  相似文献

We examined the effects of fish on lower trophic levels in a small pond in eastern Finland. The pond was divided into four sections with plastic curtains and stocked with crucian carp (Carassius carassius); two sections had low (4.4–5.5 g m–3) and two high (10.4–13.7 g m–3) densities of fish. In the summer of 1987, the pond was sampled weekly for phyto- and zooplankton until the fish were removed by rotenone in September after a three month experiment. Fish density as well as the extent of macrophyte cover had a considerable impact on planktonic communities and water quality. Mean zooplankton biomass was significantly lower and phytoplankton biomass higher, at high fish density. Water transparency was correlated negatively with chlorophyll-a at low fish density but turbidity appeared to reduce transparency at high fish density. The composition and dynamics of the plankton also differed at different fish densities. The mechanisms behind these effects, and the influences of habitat and fish behaviour on the results, are discussed.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were estimated for six teleost fish species occurring in Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea‐Bissau. Samples were collected seasonally during three dry seasons (2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016) and two rainy seasons (2015 and 2016). Fishes were captured by three methods: angled from the beach or a boat; using beach seine with a mesh size ranging 0.5–1 cm; drift netting from a boat (mesh size 2 cm). This work provides the length‐weight relationship for three fish species that are not reported in FishBase (Citharichthys stampflii, Gerres nigri and Psettodes belcheri) as well as for three species from which we present a wider size range (Eucinostomus melanopterus, Scomberomorus tritor and Sphyraena afra).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a designed integrated aquaculture–wetland ecosystem (AWE) for experimental food production and inorganic nitrogen removal from tertiary-treated wastewater. The AWE connected polyculture aquaculture ponds with in-pond aquatic plant systems (water hyacinths, Eichhornia crassipes, and Chinese water spinach, Ipomea aquatica), a solar energy aeration system, and an artificial wetland. Ponds were stocked with hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus×O. urolepis hornorum), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), and red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), and were flushed weekly with new wastewater at 20%. Fish were fed a 32% protein floating ration at 1% fish body weight per day, and wheat bran was added at 1 mg l−1 when water conductivities exceeded 900 μmhos cm−1. Plants were allowed to grow until they reached approximately 50% of the pond surface area, then maintained at this area by manual harvesting. Pond water quality (temperature, conductivity, pH, oxygen) was monitored twice daily, and weekly water samples were taken for analyses of inorganic nitrogen (ammonia and nitrate-N) in the ponds, wetland, and wetland discharge waters (n=30). Tilapia harvest from three ponds was 1134.5 kg. Fish standing crop biomass increased from 0.16 to 0.21 at stocking to 1.50–2.00 kg m−3 at harvest. Tilapia grew from an average stocking weight of 21 to 362–404 g at harvest but had poor survival (48–64%) due to heavy bird predation. Total food conversion ratios ranged 0.9–1.2. Approximately 70% of the tilapia were marketed live at $2.20 kg−1. An estimated standing crop of 1.4 tons wet weight of Ipomea aquatica grew luxuriantly in one 200-m2 polyculture pond which could be harvested sustainably at 20 kg week−1. Water hyacinths removed approximately 90% of the ammonia and nitrate-N in wastewater, and the wetland removed an additional 7% (total removal was 97% of wastewater input concentrations). Overflow water exiting the wetland had less than 0.4 mg ammonia–nitrogen l−1 and no detectable nitrate–nitrogen. The experimental AWE accomplished aquatic food production and almost complete removal of inorganic nitrogen from wastewater, functioning as a `quartenary' wastewater treatment/food production ecosystem. However, more rigorous experimentation is required to optimize fish- and plant-carrying capacities, nutrient cycles, and testing for bioaccumulation of metals in order for the AWE to be socially and economically relevant. The concept of using tertiary-treated wastewater for aquatic food production may be attractive in the peri-urban areas of many meagcities like Los Angeles, both for fish markets and to stem the growing discharges of wastewaters that are causing coastal pollution.  相似文献
