Biodiversity conservation strategies that overlook the interests of local people are prone to create conflicts. The ecosystem service approach holds potential for more comprehensively integrating the social dimension into decision-making in protected areas, but its implementation in conservation policies is still in its infancy. This research assesses the extent to which ecosystem services have been implemented in conservation strategies in protected areas. The study was conducted in two outstanding Spanish protected areas, covering a wetland (Doñana Natural and National Parks) and a Mediterranean mountain system (Sierra Nevada Natural and National Parks). Data were collected from deliberative workshops with managers and researchers, face-to-face surveys with users and a review of management plans. We found that, beyond intrinsic values of ecosystems and biodiversity, these areas provide multiple ecosystem services that deserve further attention to ensure their sustained delivery. Our research shows that environmental managers and researchers have different perceptions and priorities regarding ecosystem services management compared with ecosystem service users. Environmental managers and researchers in both protected areas perceived that human-nature relationships and ecosystem services are already widely included in management plans, if often not explicitly. We found that different ecosystem service categories receive uneven attention in management plans. These contained measures to manage provisioning and cultural services whereas measures for managing regulating services were perceived to be largely absent. We conclude by summarizing insights on how the ecosystem service approach may enhance the consideration of social interests in the management of management protected areas.  相似文献

The study of global environmental change and its effect on biodiversity and ecosystem function is at an exciting crossroads, at which ideas developed largely through theory and small-scale experiments are now being tested with ecosystem services as they are delivered to people in real-world landscapes. Pollinators and pollination are emerging as a model system for exploring these questions, which inherently required working large spatio-temporal scales. In this Invited View, I discuss current questions that are at the leading edge of this research. I first point out some surprising knowledge gaps in our understanding of pollinators’ response to global change. I then outline several ways in which current understanding of the biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationship might be transformed by studies conducted at large spatio-temporal scales. Specifically, I propose two hypotheses that relate to the number of species required to saturate ecosystem function, and to the mechanisms through which biodiversity stabilizes ecosystem function over space or time.  相似文献

In addition, the complete sequencing of several archaeal genomes has further confirmed the phenotypic coherence of these micro-organisms at the molecular level. Human domination of the biosphere has greatly altered ecosystems, often overwhelming their capacity to provide ecosystem services critical to our survival. Yet ecological understanding of ecosystem services is quite limited. Previous work maps the supply and demand for services, assesses threats to them, and estimates economic values, but does not measure the underlying role of biodiversity in providing services. In contrast, experimental studies of biodiversity-function examine communities whose structures often differ markedly from those providing services in real landscapes. A bridge is needed between these two approaches. To develop this research agenda, I discuss critical questions and key approaches in four areas: (1) identifying the important 'ecosystem service providers'; (2) determining the various aspects of community structure that influence function in real landscapes, especially compensatory community responses that stabilize function, or non-random extinction sequences that rapidly erode it; (3) assessing key environmental factors influencing provision of services, and (4) measuring the spatio-temporal scale over which providers and services operate. I show how this research agenda can assist in developing environmental policy and natural resource management plans.  相似文献

The plant plasma membrane contains redox proteins able to mediate a trans-membrane electron flow. This electron flow might be responsible for the generation of the active oxygen species observed as a reaction to pathogen attack or stress. Vitamin K1 could be identified as a possible lipid soluble electron carrier in plant plasma membrane preparations. Such a function would be analogous to coenzyme Q in animal plasma membranes. What we are going to outline in this contribution is a concept of how the electron transport system of the plant plasma membrane could interact with quinones, thus contributing to the metabolism of free radicals in plants.  相似文献

Biofilms are surface-associated microbial communities present in all environments. Although biofilms play important ecological roles, they also lead to negative or deleterious effects in industrial and medical settings. In the latter, high levels of antibiotic tolerance of bacterial biofilms developing on medical devices and during chronic infections determine the physiopathology of many healthcare-associated infections. Original approaches have been developed to avoid bacterial adhesion or biofilm development targetting specific mechanisms or pathways. We herein review recent data about biofilm lifestyle understanding and ways to fight against related infections.  相似文献

Cytochromes P450 form a very large superfamily of proteins which metabolize substrates from steroids to fatty acids to drugs and are found in organisms from protists to mammals. P450s all appear to take on a similar structural fold, yet frequently having less than 20% sequence identity and having vastly different substrates. Within the structural fold there appears to be a highly conserved core, as determined from the comparison of the structures of the six crystallized, soluble P450s. There are also variable regions which by and large appear to be associated with substrate recognition, substrate binding, and redox partner binding. Molecular dynamics simulations of motion in P450cam and P450BM-3 indicate that substrate binding and product release require substantial motion around the "substrate access channel." Additionally, at the 11th International Conference on Cytochrome P450 Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology and briefly here, the first structure of a microsomal eukaryotic P450 will be presented and compared to the already determined structures by Drs. Johnson and McRee. Finally, with a better understanding of the structure/function relationship of P450s, one will be better able to modify P450s to metabolize the substrates of choice or produce needed valuable chemicals.  相似文献

The manganese/iron-carboxylate proteins make up a recently discovered group of proteins that contain a heterodinuclear Mn/Fe redox cofactor. The chemical potential of the heterodinuclear metal site is just starting to be characterized, but available data suggest that it may have capabilities for similarly versatile chemistry as the extensively studied diiron-carboxylate cofactor. The presently identified members of the manganese/iron-carboxylate proteins are all sequence homologues of the radical-generating R2 subunit of class I ribonucleotide reductase, canonically a diiron protein. They are also commonly misannotated as such in databases. In spite of the sequence similarity, the manganese/iron-carboxylate proteins form at least two functionally distinct groups, radical-generating ribonucleotide reductase subunits and ligand-binding Mn/Fe proteins. Here, the presently available sequences for the manganese/iron-carboxylate proteins are gathered, grouped, and analyzed. The analysis provides sequence determinants that allow group identification of new sequences on the single-protein level. Key differences between the groups are mapped on the known representative structures, providing clues to the structural prerequisites for metal specificity, cofactor formation, and difference in function. The organisms that encode manganese/iron-carboxylate proteins are briefly discussed; their environmental preference suggests that the Mn/Fe heterodinuclear cofactor is preferred by extremophiles and pathogens with a particularly high relative presence in Archaea.  相似文献

Developmental plasticity describes situations where a specific input during an individual''s development produces a lasting alteration in phenotype. Some instances of developmental plasticity may be adaptive, meaning that the tendency to produce the phenotype conditional on having experienced the developmental input has been under positive selection. We discuss the necessary assumptions and predictions of hypotheses concerning adaptive developmental plasticity (ADP) and develop guidelines for how to test empirically whether a particular example is adaptive. Central to our analysis is the distinction between two kinds of ADP: informational, where the developmental input provides information about the future environment, and somatic state-based, where the developmental input enduringly alters some aspect of the individual''s somatic state. Both types are likely to exist in nature, but evolve under different conditions. In all cases of ADP, the expected fitness of individuals who experience the input and develop the phenotype should be higher than that of those who experience the input and do not develop the phenotype, while the expected fitness of those who do not experience the input and do not develop the phenotype should be higher than those who do not experience the input and do develop the phenotype. We describe ancillary predictions that are specific to just one of the two types of ADP and thus distinguish between them.  相似文献

Formation of the vertebrate skeleton and the proper functions of bony and cartilaginous elements are determined by extracellular, cell surface and intracellular molecules. Genetic and biochemical analyses of human heritable skeletal disorders as well as the generation of knockout mice provide useful tools to identify the key players of mammalian skeletogenesis. This review summarises our recent work with transgenic animals carrying ablated genes for cartilage extracellular matrix proteins. Some of these mice exhibit a lethal phenotype associated with severe skeletal defects (type II collagen-null, perlecan-null), whereas others show mild (type IX collagen-null) or no skeletal abnormalities (matrilin-1-null, fibromodulin-null, tenascin-C-null). The appropriate human genetic disorders are discussed and contrasted with the knockout mice phenotypes.  相似文献

Polyploidy and the sexual system: what can we learn from Mercurialis annua?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The evolutionary success of polyploidy most directly requires the ability of polyploid individuals to reproduce and transmit their genes to subsequent generations. As a result, the sexual system (i.e. the mating system and the sex allocation of a species) will necessarily play a key role in determining the fate of a new polyploid lineage. The effects of the sexual system on the evolution of polyploidy are complex and interactive. They include both aspects of the genetic system, the genetic load maintained in a population and the ecological context in which selection takes place. Here, we explore these complexities and review the empirical evidence for several potentially important genetic and ecological interactions between ploidy and the sexual system in plants. We place particular emphasis on work in our laboratory on the European annual plant Mercurialis annua , which offers promising scope for detailed investigations on this topic. M. annua forms a polyploid complex that varies in its sexual system from dioecy (separate sexes) through androdioecy (males and hermaphrodites) to functional hermaphroditism.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 547–560.  相似文献

The effectiveness of management strategies for invasive species is often hampered by a lack of clear understanding of the factors that limit species distributions. The distribution of exotic species, especially those that are invasive, are often so dynamic that limiting factors are difficult to identify. Comparisons of exotic species between their native ranges, where they are presumably close to equilibrium with controlling factors, and their ranges in areas of introduction can circumvent this difficulty. Such studies would help identify (1) limiting factors for distributions in native ranges, (2) factors associated with a high degree of invasiveness, (3) changes in genetics and morphology since introduction, which also might contribute to invasiveness, and (4) future directions and rates of invasion as a basis for developing detection/warning systems. Findings from such comparative studies would be highly valuable for understanding the dynamics of biological invasions and for improving the effectiveness of management to prevent or control invasives.  相似文献

How our brain is wired and subsequently generates functional output, ranging from sensing and locomotion to emotion, decision-making and learning and memory, remains poorly understood. Dys-regulation of these processes can lead to neurodegenerative, as well as neuro-psychiatric, disorders. Molecular genetic together with behavioral analyses in model organisms identify genes involved in the formation of neuronal circuits, the execution of behavior and mechanisms involved in neuro-pathogenesis. In this review I will discuss the current progress and future potential for study in a newly established vertebrate model organism for genetics, the zebrafish Danio rerio . Where available, schemes and results of genetic screens will be reviewed concerning the sensory, motor and neuromodulatory monoamine systems. Genetic analyses in zebrafish have the potential to provide important insights into the relationship between genes, neuronal circuits and behavior in normal as well as diseased states.  相似文献
