A flat plate model was used to calculate heat loss from the pinnae of the animated elephant Dumbo. In conditions of high wind velocity and large gradients, Dumbo could potentially dissipate more heat than he produces. This suggests that he may need the large ears to help lose the excess heat produced while flying.  相似文献

The effects of electrical stimulation of the Area praceoptica medialis (APM) and intraventricular serotonine injection were investigated in thirty Wistar rats tested under normo-, hypo- and hyperthermic conditions. Temperature responses such as oxygen consumption and rectal temperature were measured and heat loss was calculated. The effects of the first stimulation before serotonine injection were compared with those of the second one after serotonine application in order to prove the influence of serotonine on temperature responses due to APM stimulation. On the other hand, the influence of stimulation on changes produced by serotonine injection should be shown by the recordings of the second serotonine responses with stimulation effects and by comparison of these with those of the first serotonine responses without stimulation effects. The first APM stimulation depending on the rectal temperature before stimulation resulted in decreasing oxygen consumption in hypothermic rats while increasing that of hyperthermic animals. There was a little decrease of rectal temperature under hyper- and normothermic conditions. while under hypothermic conditions animals showed marked depression. The increase in heat loss, however, was least in hyperthermic rats and most pronounced in hypothermic animals. The second APM stimulation did almost not affect the temperature responses after serotonine application in normothermic rats, while causing supercooling agin under hypothermic conditions and insignificant cooling at hyperthermic environment temperature. Comparison of the first and second stimulation effects revealed statistical significant differences at normo-, hypo- and hyperthermic temperatures. The results are discussed under consideration of the different starting conditions before the first and second stimulation. These findings do not indicate that serotonine would shift the sensibility of mediopraeoptic structures and thus unequivocally modifies stimulation effects.  相似文献

Accommodating weanling horses in loose housing (sleeping hall with deep-litter bed and paddock) environments in winter at northern latitudes exposes the nonhuman animals to low ambient temperatures. We determined the heat loss of nine weanling horses in a cold environment by infrared thermography to assess their thermoregulatory capacity. The rate of heat loss was 73.5 to 98.7 W/m2 from the neck and 69.9 to 94.3 W/m2 from the trunk. The heat loss was higher at -16 degrees C than at 0 degrees C and -9 degrees C (p相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the heat tolerance of animals of two Portuguese (Alentejana and Mertolenga) and two exotic (Frisian and Limousine) cattle breeds, through the monitoring of physiological acclimatization reactions in different thermal situations characterized by alternate periods of thermoneutrality and heat stress simulated in climatic chambers. In the experiment, six heifers of the Alentejana, Frisian and Mertolenga breeds and four heifers of the Limousine breed were used. The increase in chamber temperatures had different consequences on the animals of each breed. When submitted to heat stress, the Frisian animals developed high thermal polypnea (more than 105 breath movements per minute), which did not prevent an increase in the rectal temperature (from 38.7°C to 40.0°C). However, only a slight depression in food intake and in blood thyroid hormone concentrations was observed under thermal stressful conditions. Under the thermal stressful conditions, Limousine animals decreased food intake by 11.4% and blood triiodothyronine (T3) hormone concentration decreased to 76% of the level observed in thermoneutral conditions. Alentejana animals had similar reactions. The Mertolenga cattle exhibited the highest capacity for maintaining homeothermy: under heat stressful conditions, the mean thermal polypnea increased twofold, but mean rectal temperature did not increase. Mean food intake decreased by only 2% and mean T3 blood concentration was lowered to 85,6% of the concentration observed under thermoneutral conditions. These results lead to the conclusion that the Frisian animals had more difficulty in tolerating high temperatures, the Limousine and Alentejana ones had an intermediate difficulty, and the Mertolenga animals were by far the most heat tolerant.

The heat loss was higher at -16 °C than at 0 °C and -9 °C (p ≤ .01), indicating that the lower critical temperature may have been between -9 °C and -16 °C. Surprisingly, the heat loss from the trunk was less at -23 °C than -16 °C (p < .05). The frost on the surface of the hair coat at -23 °C probably disturbed the thermographic examination. Thus, thermography is not necessarily suitable for determining heat loss at very cold temperatures. Our results emphasize the importance of taking the housing temperature into account in planning the feeding of cold-housed weanling horses in northern latitudes.  相似文献

Examination of the characteristics and locations of sleeping sites helps to document the social and ecological pressures acting on animals. We investigated sleeping tree choice for four groups of Colobus vellerosus, an arboreal folivore, on 298 nights at the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, Ghana using five non-mutually exclusive hypotheses: predation avoidance, access to food, range and resource defense, thermoregulation, and a null hypothesis of random selection. C. vellerosus utilized 31 tree species as sleeping sites and the species used differed per group depending on their availability. Groups used multiple sleeping sites and minimized their travel costs by selecting trees near feeding areas. The percentage that a food species was fed upon annually was correlated with the use of that species as a sleeping tree. Ninety percent of the sleeping trees were in a phenophase with colobus food items. Entire groups slept in non-food trees on only one night. These data strongly support the access to food hypothesis. Range and resource defense was also important to sleeping site choice. Groups slept in exclusively used areas of their home range more often than expected, but when other groups were spotted on the edge of the core area, focal groups approached the intruders, behaved aggressively, and slept close to them, seemingly to prevent an incursion into their core range. However, by sleeping high in the canopy, in large, emergent trees with dense foliage, positioning themselves away from the main trunk on medium-sized branches, and by showing low rates of site reuse, C. vellerosus also appeared to be avoiding predation in their sleeping site choices. Groups left their sleep sites later after cooler nights but did not show behavioral thermoregulation, such as huddling. This study suggests that access to food, range and resource defense, and predation avoidance were more important considerations in sleeping site selection than thermoregulation for ursine colobus.  相似文献

Background

During sleep animals are relatively unresponsive and unaware of their environment, and therefore, more exposed to predation risk than alert and awake animals. This vulnerability might influence when, where and how animals sleep depending on the risk of predation perceived before going to sleep. Less clear is whether animals remain sensitive to predation cues when already asleep.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We experimentally tested whether great tits are able to detect the chemical cues of a common nocturnal predator while sleeping. We predicted that birds exposed to the scent of a mammalian predator (mustelid) twice during the night would not go into torpor (which reduces their vigilance) and hence would not reduce their body temperature as much as control birds, exposed to the scent of another mammal that does not represent a danger for the birds (rabbit). As a consequence of the higher body temperature birds exposed to the scent of a predator are predicted to have a higher resting metabolic rate (RMR) and to lose more body mass. In the experiment, all birds decreased their body temperature during the night, but we did not find any influence of the treatment on body temperature, RMR, or body mass.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results suggest that birds are not able to detect predator chemical cues while sleeping. As a consequence, antipredatory strategies taken before sleep, such as roosting sites inspection, may be crucial to cope with the vulnerability to predation risk while sleeping.  相似文献

Although male bees and wasps aggregate in specific sites overnight, few studies have addressed the behaviors of female hymenopterans during the night. It is generally understood that they spend the night in a burrow or nest structure. We found female‐biased sleeping aggregations of Amegilla florea urens in populations on Iriomote Island. The sex ratio and number of sleeping individuals in the sex‐mixed aggregations changed daily. This species used dead branches as its main sleeping places, and the maximum number of individuals observed per place was 15. Females arrived at the aggregation place later and left it earlier in the morning than did males. Our result suggests that females used the sleeping place regularly but avoided a long stay with males. The use of the same sleeping place by the two sexes may be due to a limited number of sites suitable for sleeping in the forest.  相似文献

Surface temperatures were measured in euthermic woodchucks (Marmota monax) using infrared thermography across a range of ambient temperatures from -10 degrees C to 32 degrees C. The woodchuck keeps surface temperature of the peripalpebral region uniformly high, while head and body surfaces change proportionally with ambient temperature. When ambient temperature was below 0 degrees C, all surface temperatures increased which prevents freezing. At no point did the animals appear to be unable to regulate heat exchange. This species appears to be especially well adapted to the higher temperatures it encounters in its range. Vasomotion in the feet and to a lesser extent in the pinnae was used to regulate heat loss. At ambient temperature of 32 degrees C, mean temperatures of nose surfaces were 0.2 degrees C and 0.3 degrees C less than ambient temperature suggesting a type of counter current cooling mechanism may be present.  相似文献

Pinnipeds have to cope with the thermoregulatory demands of their amphibious lifestyle. As they are effectively insulated against heat loss in water by their blubber, they have to bypass the blubber for heat dissipation while staying ashore. In previous studies thermal windows on the body of captive phocid seals have been described as areas of heat dissipation in air. In this study we used infrared thermography (IRT) to examine thermal windows in seals hauling out as well as in training situations, where the first refers to a voluntary and the latter to an induced stay on shore. Furthermore we provide an IRT-based estimate of heat loss through thermal windows in pinnipeds. Hauling out seals developed thermal windows within a few minutes irrespective of environmental conditions. By contrast, seals staying on shore on a trainer's command did not develop thermal windows at all. The calculation of heat loss through thermal windows resulted in considerable values in air, but above all in water, which is energetically disadvantageous as it takes up to four minutes to close thermal windows in water.  相似文献

The effect of moonlight and temperature on activity of slow lorises was previously little known and this knowledge might be useful for understanding many aspects of their behavioural ecology, and developing strategies to monitor and protect populations. In this study we aimed to determine if the activity of the pygmy loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) is affected by ambient temperature and/or moonlight in a mixed deciduous forest. We radio-collared five females and five males in the Seima Protection Forest, Cambodia, in February to May, 2008 and January to March, 2009 and recorded their behaviour at 5 minutes intervals, totalling 2736 observations. We classified each observation as either inactive (sleeping or alert) or active behaviour (travel, feeding, grooming, or others). Moon luminosity (bright/dark) and ambient temperature were recorded for each observation. The response variable, activity, was binary (active or inactive), and a logit link function was used. Ambient temperature alone did not significantly affect mean activity. Although mean activity was significantly affected by moonlight, the interaction between moonlight and temperature was also significant: on bright nights, studied animals were increasingly more active with higher temperature; and on dark nights they were consistently active regardless of temperature. The most plausible explanation is that on bright cold nights the combined risk of being seen and attacked by predators and heat loss outweigh the benefit of active behaviours.  相似文献

INCORPORATION OF PHOSPHATE INTO RAT BRAIN DURING SLEEP AND WAKEFULNESS   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Abstract— Labelled inorganic phosphate (32P1) was administered intraventricularly to unrestrained sleeping and waking adult rats. After about 20 min of sleep or a comparable period of wakefulness, as monitored by EEG and EMG, the animals were frozen in liquid nitrogen and the brains were analysed. One group of animals (A) was not previously acclimatized to the apparatus. A second group (B) was acclimatized. The specific radioactivity of a phosphoprotein fraction was elevated during sleep in group A but not in group B. The specific radioactivity of the phosphatides of group B was depressed in sleeping as compared with waking animals. This effect was not observed in group A. No significant difference was detected between the EEG patterns of sleeping animals in groups A and B, as evaluated by standard criteria. These observations suggest that the physiological conditions attributable to environmental, emotional or other determinants can influence shifts in brain metabolism during the sleep-wakefulness cycle.  相似文献

FOK is an inbred rat strain with a genotypic adaptation to hot environments. The present study investigated the mechanism of the high heat tolerance of the FOK rat. Male FOK and WKAH rats were used. They were loosely restrained and placed individually in a direct calorimeter with an ambient temperature of 24°C. Their hypothalamic temperature, evaporative and nonevaporative heat loss and heat production were measured. After thermal equilibrium had been attained, the rats were warmed for 30 min with a chronically implanted intraperitoneal electric heater(internal heating). At least 90 min after the heating, the jacket water temperature surrounding the calorimeter chamber was gradually raised from 24°C to 36°C in 80 min (external warming). During the internal heating, changes in the thermoregulatory parameters did not differ between the groups. During the external warming, the evaporative heat loss of the FOK rat was significantly greater than that of the WKAH rat, while changes in nonevaporative heat loss and heat production did not differ between the groups. The results suggest that in the FOK rat, the improved heat tolerance is attributable to an enhanced evaporative heat loss response, but not to a facilitation of nonevaporative heat loss or of metabolic depression. Summary Central place foraging models assume that animals return to a single central place such as a nest, burrow, or sleeping site. Many animals, however choose between one of a limited number of central places. Such animals can be considered Multiple Central Place Foragers (MCPF), and such a strategy could reduce overall travel costs, if the forager selected a sleeping site close to current feeding areas. We examined the selection of sleeping sites (central places) by a community of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica in relation to the location of their feeding areas. Spider monkeys repeatedly used 11 sleeping trees, and they tended to choose the sleeping site closest to their current feeding area. A comparison of the observed travel distances with distances predicted for a MCPF strategy, a single central place strategy, and a strategy of randomly selecting sleeping sites demonstrated (1) that the MCPF strategy entailed the lowest travel costs, and (2) that the observed travel distance was best predicted by the MCPF strategy. Deviations between the observed distance travelled and the values predicted by the MCPF model increased after a feeding site had been used for several days. This appears to result from animals sampling their home range to locate new feeding sites.  相似文献

Shortages of N95 respirators for use by medical personnel have driven consideration of novel conservation strategies, including decontamination for reuse and extended use. Decontamination methods listed as promising by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (vaporous hydrogen peroxide (VHP), wet heat, ultraviolet irradiation (UVI)) and several methods considered for low resource environments (bleach, isopropyl alcohol and detergent/soap) were studied for two commonly used surgical N95 respirators (3M™ 1860 and 1870+ Aura™). Although N95 filtration performance depends on the electrostatically charged electret filtration layer, the impact of decontamination on this layer is largely unexplored. As such, respirator performance following decontamination was assessed based on the fit, filtration efficiency, and pressure drop, along with the relationship between (1) surface charge of the electret layer, and (2) elastic properties of the straps. Decontamination with VHP, wet heat, UVI, and bleach did not degrade fit and filtration performance or electret charge. Isopropyl alcohol and soap significantly degraded fit, filtration performance, and electret charge. Pressure drop across the respirators was unchanged. Modest degradation of N95 strap elasticity was observed in mechanical fatigue testing, a model for repeated donnings and doffings. CDC recommended decontamination methods including VHP, wet heat, and UV light did not degrade N95 respirator fit or filtration performance in these tests. Extended use of N95 respirators may degrade strap elasticity, but a loss of face seal integrity should be apparent during user seal checks. NIOSH recommends performing user seal checks after every donning to detect loss of appropriate fit. Decontamination methods which degrade electret charge such as alcohols or detergents should not be used on N95 respirators. The loss of N95 performance due to electret degradation would not be apparent to a respirator user or evident during a negative pressure user seal check.  相似文献

Action of etomidate was studied in 219 albino rats 7, 12, 18, 25 days old and adult. Etomidate at the dose of 20 mg/kg i.p. led to a loss of the righting reflex in all age groups. Sleeping time increased with decreasing age up to the 12th day. Seven-day-old rat pups exhibited short sleeping time, approximately at the level of adult animals. Etomidate can be used for general anaesthesia even in young animals but the quantitative differences in its efficacy have to be taken into account.  相似文献

The ECG was recorded in rabbits during EEG-controlled slow wave sleep and during food conditioning sessions. A 2-day food deprivation caused a significant slowing of mean heart rate during sleep. The heart rate increased in hungry animals waiting for food (food expectancy), but did not reach the values of saturated sleeping animals.  相似文献

A steady-state model of the heat and water transfer occurring in the upper respiratory tract of the kangaroo rat, Dipodomys spectabilis, is developed and tested. The model is described by a steady-state energy balance equation in which the rate of energy transfer from a liquid stream (representing the flow of heat and blood from the body core to the nasal region) is equated with the rate of energy transfer by thermal conduction from the nose tip to the environment. All of the variables in the equation except the flow rate of the liquid stream can be either measured directly or estimated from physiological measurements, permitting the solution of the equation for the liquid stream flow rate. After solving for the liquid stream flow rate by using data from three animals, the energy balance equation is used to compute values of energy transfer, expired air temperature, rates of water loss, and efficiency of vapor recovery for a variety of ambient conditions. These computed values are compared with values measured or estimated from physiological measurements on the same three animals, and the equation is thus shown to be internally consistent. To evaluate the model's predictive value, calculated expired air temperatures are compared with measured expired air temperatures of eight additional animals. Finally, the model is used to examine the general dependence of expired air temperature, of rates of water loss, and of efficiency of vapor recovery on ambient conditions.  相似文献
