The brown-shrimp beam trawl fishery carried out within the Tagus estuary produces discards due to the little commercial interest of most of the species caught. Between 1994 and 1996, monthly samples were collected in the two major fishing areas within the Tagus estuary, using a beam trawl, in order to estimate the amount of fish and crustaceans caught per unit of effort. The fishing effort of the commercial fleet was determined based on surveys of professional fishermen. Mortality estimates of discards were also evaluated experimentally. The main fish and crustacean species discarded after capture were Crangon crangon (Linnaeus, 1758), Liza ramada (Risso, 1826), Carcinus maenas (Linnaues, 1758) and Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770). The estimated total amount of fishery discards in the upper part of the Tagus estuary is approximately 1500 tonnes per year, which represents ca. 90% of the captures. The mortality rate of the fishes and crustaceans discarded varied according to species and season, with the highest rates during Summer months. Considering nitrogen and carbon content of the main discarded species, an input of particulate organic matter of more than 140 tonnes of carbon and 35 tonnes of nitrogen per year were estimated for these estuarine areas.  相似文献

The relationship between river flows, summarized by hydrological indices, and catches of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata from recreational fishing competitions were examined in the Hawkesbury‐Nepean River system. Between 55 and 198 fishermen took part in six monthly fishing competitions. The number of hours fished increased from 570 to 1800 h between 1998 and 2001. A total of 11 275 Australian bass were caught over the study period. The percentage of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Australian bass and the catch of fish per unit effort was influenced by either the flow regime occurring in the same year and flow in the previous year. The number of Australian bass caught per unit effort was positively associated with the median volume of water and the number and duration of high flow events occurring in the previous year. The percentage of YOY Australian bass caught in any one year was positively associated with the median flow in the same year of capture and the maximum, mean and variation of daily flows, the number and duration of high flow events and the greatest rise and fall of daily flows in the previous year.  相似文献

This study is an ecological analysis of the use of resources by two potentially competitive groups, the commercial and recreational fishermen of Rio Grande, located on the border of the States of SÃo Paulo and Minas Gerais. Tourism at Rio Grande was intensified after the construction of the hydroeletric plant of Marimbondo in 1974, and local fishermen have complained about its interference. Values of niche dimensions, such as fishing periods, grounds, and prey caught were obtained through data gathered at landing points. Local and recreational fishermen usually fish in different parts of the river and catch different fish, because they use different gear. However, in transition months between the wet and dry seasons, when fish are less abundant, there is conflict or competition related to fishing grounds, reinforced by the territorial fishing rights of local longline fishermen in this period. We show how ecological concepts, such as niche and competition, may help to understand strategies of exploitation by human groups, fundamental information for the management of tropical areas.  相似文献

The spotted-necked otter (Lutra maculicollis) is believed to be declining across its range and, in Benin, has recently been listed as endangered. In Benin, the spotted-necked otter is largely restricted to the south of the country, where it is threatened by a number of factors, including conflict with fishermen. Understanding the nature and extent of this conflict, and the impact that it has on local fishermen, as well as identifying feasible mitigation strategies, represents a critical challenge for conservation managers. This study documents otter damage experienced by 30 fishermen in the Hlan River, in the Southern Benin wetlands. We performed hierarchical classification analysis using Ward distances to categorize fish species according to the level of otter damage suffered, and used generalized linear models to identify predictors that best explained otter damage. Our results suggest that of the 16 fish species commonly caught by fishermen in the Hlan River, otters favored the most valuable species (but these were also the most abundant in the catch). However, although otter damage was extensive, monthly total income loss attributable to spotted-necked otter damage (including fish loss and damage to equipment) was estimated at only 9% per fishermen (considerably lower than the 30% reported by a preliminary survey of 163 fishermen in the same area). Our model showed that otter damage increased significantly with the number of adult fish captured by fisherman while the cost of otter damage increased with the length of time that the fishing equipment was left unattended. We suggest that otter damage could be reduced if fishing equipment were checked at least twice a day by fishermen, and recommend a maximum interval between checks of 700 min (12 h). Long-term sustainable management of these conflicts will require an integrated approach taking into account socio-economic, political and environmental dimensions.  相似文献

Fish catches from the coral reefs of the Tulear region (southwest Madagascar), are analyzed based on fish landings. This region of the island consists of two barrier reefs, two coral banks, three lagoon reefs and a fringing reef. The total reef area studied was 190 km2. Of the whole fishing area, the reef flat was the most frequently used by fishermen. Line catches per unit efort (CPUE) were stable throughout the eight month sampling period (6 to 8 kg/trip to sea), whereas gillnet and seine catches showed differences between the cold period and the warm period. These results appear to be representative of the artisanal fishery catches in the southwest Indian Ocean. Annual fish yield was estimated at 12 t km-2 yr-1. Comparable yields have been recorded in certain regions of the Indo-Pacific, that have similar ratios of coral reef area to adjacent shallows and similar fishing practices. Reef species (Lethrinidae, Siganidae) dominated the catches. At present, coastal waters of the Tulear region are heavily fished, and the fishermen report a progressive decrease in the average size of fish caught over the last 15 years. Management measures are suggested, based on preliminary findings.  相似文献

Pike‐perch (Sander lucioperca L. 1758) is one of the freshwater species caught by professional fishermen in the Netherlands. The species is also popular with sport fishermen. Little is known about its migration and rehabilitation in large river systems. The aim of the present study was to obtain data on the movements of pike‐perch in the Dutch large river systems and investigate when and how far individual fish swim up‐ or downstream. Seasonal migration was expected. The second objective was to gain information on how many fish pass the Haringvlietdam when migrating downstream during high discharge, and ending up in the North Sea. The third objective was to gain data on how many fish were caught by the fishermen. NEDAP TRAIL System® transponders were surgically implanted in 286 pike‐perch between June 2007 and October 2008. Marked fish could be detected via several detection stations in the river systems throughout the Netherlands and one in the River Rhine station in Germany. Sport fishermen were asked to inform the organization when a marked fish was caught. Data collected between June 2007 and April 2010 indicate a pike‐perch home range of 30–40 km, with some individuals migrating up to more than 200 km. A regional approach regarding fisheries management is necessary. No seasonal patterns were found. Swimming activity was highest during darkness. Results showed pike‐perch around the Haringvlietdam swimming in the saltwater area on the sea side of the dam, and returning to the freshwater Lake Haringvliet, indicating that the structure of the dam is used for feeding, but also that the fish will die if the dam is closed when fish are still outside.  相似文献

The biological characteristics of eels from the Asi River, Turkey, were assessed between December 2017 and November 2018. Eels were sampled monthly using fyke nets (operated by professional fishermen), yielding a total of 509 specimens. Total length and weight were measured, sex, age and maturity stages (silver or yellow eel) were determined. Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) was calculated for both biomass per unit effort and numbers caught on a monthly and annual basis. The length-weight relationships (LWRs) of silver and yellow eel was W = 0.009*TL3.22 (n = 262) and W = 0.0106*L3.09 (n = 247), respectively. The age of the sampled fish ranged from year class II to VI. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as L=69.25 cm, K = 0.43 1/year, t0= −0.41 and phi prime index ( ǿ )= 3.31 for all samples. The overall eel fishing mortality rate (F) was 0.31 year-1, and the exploitation and survival rates of silver stage eels were estimated with 30% and 39%, respectively.  相似文献

This study compared the catch composition, catch per unit effort, and incidental impacts of spearfishers and linefishers engaged in a structured fishing program whereby fishing effort was standardized across time, space and skill level. It was found that (1) the catch composition of both groups of fishers overlapped considerably, (2) the numbers of target fish caught by spearfishers (156) and linefishers (168) were not significantly different, (3) the mean size of target fish caught by spearfishers (1.95 ± 0.1 kg, ±SE) was significantly larger than the mean size of target fish caught by linefishers (1.27 ± 0.06 kg), and (4) spearfishers retained 43% more biomass of target species than did linefishers (304 versus 213 kg, respectively). However, linefishers used ∼1 kg of bait for every 3 kg of target fish that were captured. Linefishers also caught far more undersized, undesirable, or protected fishes (i.e., bycatch) and caused far more pollution (i.e., lost gear) than did spearfishers. It is concluded that the overall impacts of recreational spearfishing and linefishing on fishery resources of the Great Barrier Reef are broadly equivalent (per unit of fishing effort), and that management regulations should be applied equitably across both fishing sectors. A management strategy of this type will simplify enforcement of fisheries regulations and avoid discrimination of particular fishers in local communities where both fishing methods are socially or culturally important.  相似文献

Sea turtles were targeted by fisheries in the Mediterranean from 1920 to 1970 and have undergone severe exploitation. At least 30,000 to 40,000 turtles were caught along the Palestinian coastline during the 1920s to 1930s. Although intentional cap- ture of marine turtles is now illegal, sea turtles are still incidentally caught by the fishing industry, making it a major cause of sea turtle mortality. The present study as- sesses the impact of the Israeli fishery fleet on the turtle population in the Levantine basin based on on-board observations and a fishermen survey. The results show that gillnets and trawlers are the main threats to sea turtles in this area. 21 turtles were caught during 1385.5 hours of trawling observations – a catch rate of 0.015 turtles per hour. We estimate that a total of 1,315 turtles are caught annually by Israeli trawlers. According to the fishermen survey, ~21 turtles are caught each year by a single gillnet vessel, yielding an annual estimate of 1,672 turtles for the whole gillnet fleet. We have also found that only a small fraction of the turtles injured by trawlers is represented in the strandings. The mortality rate through trawling and the stranding density is the highest in the region, emphasizing the urgent need to regulate the Israe- li fishery. This fishery poses a major threat to the whole Levantine sea turtle popula- tion, especially during the vulnerable reproduction stage.  相似文献

INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICAN FUR SEALS and THE PURSE-SEINE FISHERY   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Operational interactions occur between South African (Cape) fur seals and the purse-seine fishery in South Africa. Seals eat fish from the nets but the main concern is the activity of seals causing fish to sound, resulting in loss, or partial loss of the catch. Detectable loss occurs on approximately 5% of hauls. In addition to this, smaller quantities may be lost on each haul as seals depress the net float line while moving into and out of the net. The cost of seal interference is difficult to quantify because the mass of fish lost is not known, and the loss is essentially one of additional fishing time required to fill the total allowable catch for the fishery. An estimate of the cost is calculated as between 1.6% and 4.1% of the landed value of the fishery. Some seals are killed by fishermen when they pose a potential threat to the safety of the crew aboard, and some may drown if caught in the net or pump. Overall this is probably fewer than a thousand seals per year. It is also known that if seals are thought to be disturbing the fish, these seals near the nets may be deliberately killed by purse-seine fishermen. Overall this mortality, whether deliberate or incidental, is probably negligible in terms of the population size of South African fur seals.  相似文献

Modern salmon hatcheries in Southeast Alaska were established in the 1970s when wild runs were at record low levels. Enhancement programs were designed to help rehabilitate depressed fisheries and to protect wild salmon stocks through detailed planning and permitting processes that included focused policies on genetics, pathology, and management. Hatcheries were located away from significant wild stocks, local sources were used to develop hatchery broodstocks, and juveniles are marked so management can target fisheries on hatchery fish. Initially conceived as a state-run system, the Southeast Alaska (SEAK) program has evolved into a private, non-profit concept centered around regional aquaculture associations run by fishermen and other stakeholders that pay for hatchery operations through landing fees and sale of fish. Today there are 15 production hatcheries and 2 research hatcheries in SEAK that between 2005 and 2009 released from 474 to 580 million (average 517 million) juvenile salmon per year. During this same period commercial harvest of salmon in the region ranged from 28 to 71 million salmon per year (average 49 million). Contributions of hatchery-origin fish to this harvest respectively averaged 2%, 9%, 19%, 20%, and 78% for pink, sockeye, Chinook, coho, and chum salmon. Both hatchery and wild salmon stocks throughout much of Alaska have experienced high marine survivals since the 1980s and 1990s resulting in record harvests over the past two decades. Although some interactions between hatchery salmon and wild salmon are unavoidable including increasing concerns over straying of hatchery fish into wild salmon streams, obvious adverse impacts from hatcheries on production of wild salmon populations in this region are not readily evident.  相似文献

Estuaries are well known for their role as nutrient and detrital sinks that stimulate high levels of both primary and secondary production which, in turn, support a large biomass of fishes per unit area. This study reviews available information on coastal fish biomasses (g m?2 wet mass) and productivity (g m?2 wet mass year?1) in order to place South African data on these topics into a global perspective. Using biogeographic fish productivity estimates, together with estuarine water area, the approximate annual teleost production in South African estuaries was calculated at 585, 1706 and 13 904 t in the cool temperate, warm temperate and subtropical regions, respectively. Total annual fish production in estuaries on the subcontinent is conservatively estimated at 16 195 t, but this figure is likely to fluctuate widely, depending on recruitment success and annual environmental conditions pertaining to these systems. Approximately 2000 t of fish are estimated to be harvested by fishing activities in South African estuaries each year, which represents c. 12% of annual fish production. Although this figure may appear sustainable, the reality is that there are a few heavily targeted estuary‐associated marine species at the top of the food chain that are being overexploited by both anglers and subsistence fishermen. Natural mortalities due to piscivorous fish and bird predation has been estimated at c. 3% of total fish biomass per month in the East Kleinemonde Estuary, but this figure will vary considerably depending on bird abundance and foraging patterns along the coast. In contrast to catches made by the fishermen, piscivorous fishes and birds are targeting mainly juvenile marine fish and small estuarine resident species that are very abundant and generally low down in the food web.  相似文献

In this study, we sought to investigate the biology (diet and reproduction) and ethnobiology (fishers knowledge and fishing spots used to catch snappers) of five species of snappers (Lutjanidae), including Lutjanus analis, Lutjanus synagris, Lutjanus vivanus, Ocyurus chrysurus, and Romboplites saliens at five sites along the northeast (Riacho Doce, Maceió in Alagoas State, and Porto do Sauípe, Entre Rios at Bahia State) and the southeast (SE) Brazilian coast (Paraty and Rio de Janeiro cities at Rio de Janeiro State, and Bertioga, at São Paulo State.). We collected 288 snappers and interviewed 86 fishermen. The stomach contents of each fish were examined and macroscopic gonad analysis was performed. Snappers are very important for the fisheries of NE Brazil, and our results indicated that some populations, such as mutton snapper (L. analis) and lane snapper (L. synagris), are being caught when they are too young, at early juvenile stages. Local knowledge has been shown to be a powerful tool for determining appropriate policies regarding management of target species, and artisanal fishermen can be included in management processes. Other suggestions for managing the fisheries are discussed, including proposals that could provide motivation for artisanal fishermen to participate in programs to conserve resources, such as co-management approaches that utilize local knowledge, the establishment of fishing seasons, and compensation of fishermen, through 'payment for environmental services'. These suggestions may enhance the participation of local artisanal fishermen in moving to a more realistic and less top-down management approach of the fish population.  相似文献

During this study, anglers caught over 580 kg of fish, comprising over 29 500 individuals of 14 species. Nine times as many gudgeon, Gobio gobio , as roach, Rutilus rutilus , were caught. Gudgeon represented 35.94% of the total catch weight compared with 44.64% for roach. The mean total catch per man-hour was 8.9 fish and the mean catch rate was 176 g per man-hour. Population estimates for fish longer than 12 cm for all species other than gudgeon and bleak, Alburnus alburnus , gave fish densities of 0.21 fish m−2, the roach population was 0.15 m−2, and that for dace Leuciscus leuciscus , 0.02 m−2. The population density for all sizes of all species caught was estimated to be 2.25 fish m−2.
The fish biomass available to the angler was 447 kg ha−2. The rate of exploitation of the fishery over the period of sampling was high at 17%, representing an annual exploitation rate of 94%.  相似文献

The Great White Pelican Pelecanus anocrotalus is the largest migrating bird in Israel and is an endangered species. The Palearctic populations of the Great White Pelican breed in eastern Europe and Asia and most of them pass through the ‘bottleneck’ of Israel to wintering grounds in Africa. Natural feeding sites for pelicans have diminished during recent decades due to human activities, and sites of extensive aquaculture have become the favourite feeding places for wintering and migrating Great White Pelicans. The fish industry has reported a significant impact on fish yield and the conflict between pelicans and fishermen has escalated so that hundreds of pelicans have died in recent years from shooting or accidental electrocution. We approached this management problem by studying the energy requirements of the Great White Pelican during migration and while wintering in Israel, under different feeding regimes (fish or chicks) and in different seasons, in captivity. The results show that a captive bird consumes 1.1 kg of fish per day. The basal metabolic rate and apparent metabolized energy of the Great White Pelican are both higher than predicted from allometric equations. Energetic demands were quite stable on both diets (fish and chicks) and during both seasons (winter and summer). The fat deposits of migrating pelicans averaged 313.5 g compared with 480 g in wintering birds (3.4% and 5.4% of body mass, respectively). Based on these fat contents and on the measured daily energy consumption, we calculated that birds that do not feed in Israel can fly only up to 1620 km from Israel southward and could not cover the distance to their likely wintering grounds in the Sudd area in southern Sudan. However, birds that replenish their fuel reserves could fly up to 2460 km and hence could reach this area. Therefore, we conclude that Great White Pelicans must feed in Israel during the autumn migration in order to complete their journey to Africa. One solution to the conflict between pelicans and fishermen could be to combine deterrents preventing pelicans from feeding in fish‐ponds with the provision of attractive alternative reservoirs, to ensure regular food supplies during autumn.  相似文献

The Atlantic sturgeon ( Acipenser oxyrinchus ) has been exploited commercially in the upper estuary of the SL Lawrence River right up until the present day. Statistics on annual landings from 20 to 401 between 1940 and 1966, and an almost total absence between 1967 and 1975, were followed by a significant capture increase, which reached 120 t in 1993.
Analysis of captures has shown that the median age of sturgeon caught has gone down from 11 to 6 years-old in recent years, that the length of the fish (LF) varied between 50 cm and 170 cm, and that the last significant cohorts supporting the fishery come from 1982, 1986 and 1988. In 1994, 2% to 4% of captures were larger than 150 cm. No fish in reproductive state, even among the largest individuals, was observed among the captures.
Since 1995, we have adopted various regulations in order to protect the largest sturgeons, and to reduce the annual landings to 60 t in 1998. Monitoring of captures, conducted in collaboration with commercial fishermen, has enabled us to measure the effects of these new fishing regulations, which include fishing effort control, reduction of the season, size limits for captures, and imposition of a quota. These measures have allowed us to partially reach our objective, since landings in 1997 were reduced to 661.
The absence of sexually mature adults in captures has always raised the question as to their abundance and the areas which they use. Current studies are demonstrating that the sexually mature adults use the deepest parts of the estuary, sectors which are not exploited in a sustained way by fishermen. Studies are in progress to locate spawning grounds and early juvenile habitat. Exploitation of this population will continue to be closely monitored.  相似文献

This study reports on the yield of commercially important species captured intentionally around and under fish-cage farms using specific types of gear from both sea-cage farmers and artisanal fishermen, and to identify the species composition of these catches. The 2004–2008 research was carried out in 21 fish farms, randomly chosen along the coast of Izmir Province on the Aegean Sea. A total of 91 persons were interviewed, including directors, fishers from the fish farms and artisanal fishermen. The technical characteristics of a special trap used by some fish farmers were diagramed. Total wild fish catch quantities as well the species raised in the sea-cages were recorded. A total of 34 finfish and four invertebrate species were identified from the sea-cage farm fishery. Eight fish species according to the descending quantities raised were bogue ( Boops boops ), grey mullet ( Mugil spp.), blackspot seabream ( Pagellus bogaraveo ), salema ( Sarpa salpa ), common two-banded seabream ( Diplodus vulgaris ), annular seabream ( Diplodus annularis ), striped seabream ( Lithognathus mormyrus ) and gilthead seabream ( Sparus aurata ). Mean quantities of wild fish caught from 2004 to 2008 in a sampled farm were 13 998 ± 210, 34 434 ± 482, 30 116 ± 529, 27 893 ± 429, and 32 366 ± 808 kg, respectively. There were significant differences between fish amounts and years (P   < 0.05).  相似文献

Studies of Río Negro subsistence farming and fishing activities are used to estimate the human carrying capacity for the region and the likely pattern of human land-use during prehistory. Ceramic evidence suggests human presence in the region more than 3000 years ago. Traditional farming is labor intensive and relatively unproductive. Nevertheless, farmers achieve an energy return of 15.21, and produce 2600 kcal per work hour. Fish are the major protein source, but fish catch per unit of effort and fish yield per hectare of floodplain are very low; fishermen are probably exploiting local fish resources very close to their limit. The low human population density would suggest that the Río Negro forest has been relatively undisturbed. Nevertheless, charcoal is widespread and abundant in forest soils. This charcoal is probably from anthropogenic or natural wildfires. These results suggest a much more complex history for Amazonia than previously thought.K. A total of 4450 tagged two and three years old salmon smolt were released into the River Drawa. Tagged salmon was caught mainly in central Baltic. Downstream migrating smolt were caught in lower Oder River till mid-May, and in the Szczecin Firth till the first decade of June. After reaching the sea, the tagged salmon migrated northeastward. They remained most of all in the central Baltic and were mainly caught near Gotland. In autumn of the third year after the release salmon were present on the spawning grounds. The fish attained an average of 58.2 cm and 1892g after the first year of sea life, 78.0 cm and 5329g after the second year, and 98.5cm and 9100g after the third year. Most of the tagged Drawa salmon were caught by Danish (44.7%) and Swedish (25.9%) fishermen.  相似文献

Tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier 1818), is one of the largest and most commercially important freshwater fishes in South America, attaining a body size of up to 1 m length and a mass of ≥ 30 kg. We hypothesize that the mean length of the captured tambaqui was impacted by the fishery. The present study used GIS information to map the Manacapuru Lake system and record tambaqui caught by fishermen from February 2007 to January 2008. Fork lengths of fish were measured and compared to the legal size limit of 55 cm, corresponding to the reproductive age as set by IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Renewable Resources). Only 1% of 1271 fish measured were at or above this limit. Spatial distribution of the catch within this floodplain lake system varied, depending on the stage of the hydrologic cycle, but the greatest number of fish was caught within the Piranha Sustainable Development Reserve where fishing is prohibited by law. The results of this study indicate an acute need for enforcement of the law to avoid collapse of the fishery.  相似文献
