A Preliminary Study on Symplocos of China (Cont.)

This paper is a preliminary study on the morphology, taxonomy and geography of Symplocaceae, following the system of H. P. Nooteboom and H. Handel-Mazzetti et E. Peter-Stibal, who divided the genus into two subgenera according to the floral characteristics. But I disagree with Nooteboom's unduly broad specific concept, and adopt Handel-Mazzetti et Peter-Stibal's concept, which usually treated the species of this family according to their habitats in regions in a relatively narrow sense. The genus is divided in the present paper into two subgenera, six sections, among which two are new. Nine new species and three new varieties are described in this paper. Discussions on some taxa are also presented. The family Symplocaceae consists of 300 species in the whole world. They are distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical Asia, Oceania and America. In China there are about 77 species widely distributed in the south-western and south-eastern parts, with only one species, namely Symplocos paniculata (Thunb.) A Preliminary Study on the Genus Wendlandia in China (Cont.)

This paper presenta a brief introduction to the taxonomy and geographic distribution of the genus Wendlandia. The genus Wendlandia in tribe Rondeletieae of the family Rubiaceae was proposed by Bartling in 1830. There are now more than ninety species throughout the world. It is distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical Asia. Thirty species, ten subspecies and three varieties are recorded in the paper. Among these, nine species, two subspecies and one variety are new. They are distributed mainly in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Xizang and Taiwan Provinces. Only one species, namely W. longidens (Hance) Hutch. Extends northward to Hubei and Sichuan. The classification of the genus in this paper is based on Cowan's system. It is divided into four series mainly by their stigmatic and staminal characters, namely Euexsertae, Subinclusae, Montigenae and Clavigerae. The first two series are each subdivided according to the stipule feature into two subseries, designated as Cuspidatae, Orbiculares, Tinctoriae and Paniculatae. From the distribution patterns of the genus in the flora of China, we may understand: 1. The genus has the most species in China, where is its distribution centre, and Yurnan is the province richest in species of the genus. 2. There are twenty-one species, five subspecies and three varieties endemic to China. Most of these endemics have their distributional area confined to a single province, and some of them are confined to an even narrower district, with only a few of them extending beyond province boundaries. 3. The series Subinclusae Cowan has the most species not only in China but also in other regions of the world, whereas the series Montigenae Cowan has fewer species and they are all restricted to China. A Revision of the Genus Androsace L. in China (Cont.)

A revision of the Chinese species of Androsace updates our knowledge of the genus by providing a brief historical survey, character analysis, discussion on generic relationships and geographical distribution, and a key to species currently recognized. For the sake of completeness, the key is supplemented by an enumeration, and a record of the known distribution of each species. Furthermore, some specimen citations and additional notes on species previously very incompletly known are also included. Seven new species and two infraspecific taxa are described.

This paper deals with the taxonomy and geographic distribution of the genus Chrysosplenium L. in China. Based on the characters and evolution of the seed, capsule, disk, ovary and leaf, the species of this genus can be grouped into 2 subgenera, 5 sections and 16 series. Pan Disk obscure or absent; ovary nearly half-inferior, sometimes mostly inferior; capsule generally subtruncate and emarginate at top and bilobed with equal and horizontally divaricate or suberect lobes; seeds smooth and glabrous. Type: Chrysosplenium ramosum Maxim. This series is monospecific one, also occurring in China, namely C. ramosum Maxim. (2) Ser. Delavayi Hara Disk distinctly 8-lobed, Papillae sparse, brown around the disk; ovary mostly inferior; capsule nearly truncate and emarginate at top, and bilobed with equal and horizontally divaricate lobes; seeds distinctly longitudinally 10-16-costate and transversely striate on the ridge. Type: Chrysosplenium delavayi Franch. This series can be considered as the most advanced one in the Chrysaspleninm L. So far, the Chrysosplenium L. comprises 64 species in the world, among which 1 species is found in North Africa, 2 in South America, 4 in Europe, 5 in North America, 56 in Asia, of which 3 occur in Sikkim, 5 Bhutan, 5 Mongolia, 6 north Burma, 6 Korea, 7 north India, 8 Nepal, 12 Japan, 17 U.S.S.R. (of which 3 also in Europe), 34 China (including 22 endemic species and 3 new species). In China, Fujian and Guangdong Provinces and Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi each has only 1 species, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Shanxi and Hebei Provinces and Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang each has 2, Anhui, Jiangxi and Hunan Provinces each has 3, Qinghai Province 4, Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Guizhou Provinces each has 5, Jilin and Hubei Provinces each has 6, Gausu Province 8, Shaanxi Province and Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region each has 10, Yunnan Province has 11, Sichuan Province has 14. Thus the distribution centre of this genus should be in the north temperate zone of Asia, and the region covering Shaanxi Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan and Xizang may be regarded as an important part of this centre. The 7 species of Ser. Nudicaula Maxim. emend. J. T. Pan can be considered as the most primitive ones in this genus. They are mostly distributed in Shaanxi (Qin Ling), south Gansu, southeast Qinghai, southwest Sichuan and nothwest Yunnan of China. This region may be considered as the centre of the origin (or at least differentiation) of this genus. The new species and the new varieties described in this paper are as follows: C. hydrocotylifolium Levl. et Vant. var. emeiense J. T. Pan, C. taibaishanense J. T. Pan, C. lixianense Jien ex J. T. Pan, C. qinlingense Jien ex J. T. Pan.     

A New Understanding of the Bohaidinioid Dinoflagellates (Cont.)

After the first dinoflagellates monograph was published in China in 1978, the new information about the Bobaidinioid group has been accumulated, which results in reviewing our understanding of this group. The main emendations here emphasize the combination archeopyle of tAa+3Ia or tAa+3I type, the number and distribution of girdle projections, and the nature of girdle folds of this group, on which the systematic position of Bohaidinioideae belonging to Deflandreaceae of Peridiniineae has been allocated. Five forms of seven species of four genera have been emended, and two new species and three new forms have also been described in this paper. They are Bohaidina alveolae, B. spinosa form spinosa, B. spinosa form quadrata, and B. spinosa form fusiforma. In addition an attemp has been made of reconstructing the paleoecology of Bohaidinioideae and its possible role in the process of dinoflagellates migration from marine to freshwater, based on reviewing the geological history of nonmarine dinoflagellate records in the world, the occurrence of Bohaidinioideae and other associated genera and species in the same stratum, combined with available geological and palaeontological evidences.     

A Study of the Genus Hemiboea (Gesneriaceae) (Cont.)

The genus Hemiboea is a curious genus of the tribe Didymocarpeae (Cyrtandroideae), characterized by its peculiar pistil with one fertile carpel and its follicle-like capsule. This genus has not yet been thoroughly studied since its establishment by C. B. Clarke in 1888. In the present paper, the taxonomic history is briefly reviewed; the external morphology, leaf histology, pollen morphology and geographical distribution are discussed; a key to the 21 species recognized by the author is provided; and the economic uses reported in various publications are summarized. I. Morphology (1) Sclereids The foliar sclereids, occurring in this genus and defined by their forms, fall into two types. (A) Vermiform selereids This type of sclereids is noted in 15 species and may be classified into two groups according to their positions in leaf tissues. Those of the first group are interspersed in the ground tissue around the vascular bundles of leaves and noted in 12 species, i.e.H. longisepala, H. cavaleriei, H. bicornuta, H. fangii, H. omeiensis, H. gracilis, H. glandulosa, H. mollifolia, H. pingbianensis, H. parviflora, H. strigosa and H. gamosepala, and those of the second group are dispersed in the mesophyll, occurring in H. subcapitata, H. henryi and H. latisepala. (B) Astrosclereids The sclereids of this type are discovered for the first time in Hemiboea, dispersed in the mesophyll of a single species, i.e.H. lungzhouensis. No foliar sclereids are found in the remaining 5 species, i.e.H. integra, H. flaccida, H. longgangensis, H. subacaulis and H. follicularis. The differences in forms and positions of the foliar sclereids and their absence or presence are of great help in understanding the relationship between the infrageneric taxa. (2) Pollen grains The pollen grains of 19 species were examined with LM and SEM. They are 3-colporate, subglobose or prolate, 20-38.8×22-28μm. The exine is 1.3-2μm thick and the sculpture is foveolate (e.g.H. cavaleriei) to reticulate (e.g.H. omeiensis). In Sect. Subcapitatae the pollen grains are subglobose or prolate, while those of Sect. Hemiboea are prolate. No pollen grains are observed in anthers of 13 speciemens of H. subacaulis var. subacaulis and var. jiangxiensis. (3) Seed-coat Under SEM the seed-coat exhibits considerable diversity in the genus, furnishing useful characters for explaining the relationship between the two sections. 2. Geographical distribution The genus Hemiboea ranges from the eastern border of the Xizang Plateau and Yunnan Plateau eastwards to Ryu Kyu Islands, and from the southern slope of the Qinling Range southwards to northern Vietnam. The karst region of S. E. Yunnan and W. Guangxi is the centre of maximum variation of the genus and is probably its origin centre, where the most primitive taxon exists, and where more species (13 species, i.e. 61.9 per cent of the sum total) and more endemic species (8 species) are found than elsewhere. 3. Classification The genus consists of 21 species and 6 varieties which are classified into 2 sections. The Clarke's classification is accepted, but emended here as follows: Sect. 1. Subcapitatae Clarke Sepals free or posterior ones connate. Muri of the seed-coat laevigate or rugose; bottom of meshes flat, smooth or with few verrucae. Pollen grains subglobose or prolate. Sect. 2. Hemiboea Sepals connate. Muri of the seed-coat tuberculate or aliform-tuberculate; bottom of meshes flat or concave, with dense verrucae. Pollen grains prolate. Based on the analysis of external and internal morphological characters, the main evolutionary trends in the genus are discussed and enumerated, and a hypothesis indicating the relationships between the two sections is given. A Study on the Chinese Ormosia Jacks. (Cont.)

The first classification for the genus Ormosia was proposed by Bentham. It was followed by Taubert (1892) in Engler and Prantl’s Nat. Pflanzenf., who divided the genus into 2 sections. On the basis of the pod structure and seed characters Prain (1900) arranged the genus in 2 sections with 4 subsections. In the monograph on the genus Merrill and L. Chen ( 1943 ) limited their taxonomic study to Chinese and Indo-Chinese species, and recognized 34 species and 15 series. Recently Yakovlev (1971-1976) has treated the genus in 6 separate genera. In the present paper the author recognizes 35 species, of which 7 species and 2 varieties are new. The Chinese species of the genus are grouped into 3 sections and 6 series inmy classification.

Notulae de Plantis Tribus Cynarearum Familiae Compositarum Sinicae (II)(Cont.)

Since the 19th century many botanists have studied the Chinese Cirsium and a great number of taxa or names has been reported, of which many still need to be reviewed critically This work is a preliminaxy result of study on Chinese species of Cirsium. As many as 65 taxan or names in the literature are reduced to synonym in this paper. The Cirsium in China so far known comprises 49 species, of which 9 are described as new, 1 is a new combination and 4 are new records in Chinese flora. These new species are: C. subulariforme Shih, S. muliense Shih, C. fanjingshanense Shih, C. periacanthaceum Shih, C. racemiforme Ling et Shih, C. vernonioides Shih, C. chrysolepis Shih, C. tenuifolium Shih and the new combination is C. viridifolium (Hand. -Mazz.) Shih. The new records in China are C. serratuloides (L.) Hill., C. incanum (S. G. Gmel.) Fisch. ex MB., C. lanatum (Roxb. ex Willd.) Spreng and C. alatum (S. G. Gmel) Bobr. The Chinese Cirsium is divided into 8 sections in the present paper, of which 3 are new, namely, Sect. Isolepis Shih, Sect. Tricholepis Shilh and Sect. Hymenolepis Shih, and I is a new combination, namely, Sect. Spanioptilon (Cass.) Shih. In addition, a new species of the genus Alfredia, A. aspera Slih, is described.     

New Plants of Gesneriaceae from Guangxi of China (Cont. I)

Five new species of Gesneriaceae from Guangxi of China are described and illustrated. They are Oreocharis heterandra , Didymostigma leiophyllum , Chirita macrodonta ,C. macrorhiza and C. liujiangensis.     

Silicification of bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla Mitf.) root and leaf

Bamboo is a silicon accumulating plant. In leaves, the major place of silicon (Si) deposition is the epidermis, with the highest concentration of Si in silica cells. In bamboo roots, the deposition of Si is found only in endodermal cell walls. The silicification of leaves and roots was examined in the economically important bamboo plant Phyllostachys heterocycla, using an environmental scanning electron microscope coupled with X-ray microanalysis, as well as gravimetric quantification. The content of Si on a dry weight basis measured by gravimetric quantification was 7.6% in leaves and 2.4% in roots, respectively. Moreover, quantification of EDX data showed high Si impregnation of the inner tangential endodermal walls. Si content in this part of the root endodermal cell walls was even higher than that in the outer leaf epidermal walls, where conspicuous deposition of Si often occurs in grass plants.     

A taxonomical revision ofThymus sect.Teucrioides (Lamiaceae)

TheThymus teucrioides Boiss. & Spruner aggregate is revised and the following new taxa, all from the alpine zone in the Greek mountains, are described:Th. leucospermus Hartvig from the calcareous mountains of Pindhos and Mt Parnassos in Sterea Ellas,Th. rechingeri Hartvig with the subsp.macrocalyx Hartvig from calcareous mountains in Sterea Ellas and N Peloponnissos, andTh. teucrioides subsp.alpinus Hartvig from the serpentine areas of N Pindhos. In the variableTh. teucrioides s. str. many characters have turned out to be markedly geographically correlated and many local populations can be distinguished by a particular combination of characters.Dedicated to Prof.K. H. Rechinger on the occasion of his 80th birthday.     

A taxonomical investigation of the genus Corvomeyenia weltner (Spongillidae)

Summary The taxonomically problematic spongillid genus Corvomeyenia Weltner is analyzed. A north-south evolutionary series composed of Corvomeyenia everetti (Mills), Corvomeyenia carolinensis sp. nov., and Corvomeyenia australis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago can be demonstrated. C. carolinensis sp. nov. possesses spicular characteristics that indicate genetic variation from its congeners; in addition, environmental conditions in the type locality of C. carolinensis sp. nov. differ greatly from the optimal conditions for growth of C. everetti (Mills). A new method for phase contrast study of living sponge tissues and a variety of histological and histochemical techniques are used to taxonomically define C. carolinensis sp. nov.

Zusammenfassung Die in taxonomischer Hinsicht problematische Spongilliden-gattung Corvomeyenia Weltner wird analysiert. Von Norden nach Süden lässt sich eine Entwicklungsreihe nachweisen, bestehend aus Corvomeyenia everetti (Mills), Corvomeyenia carolinensis sp. nov. sowie Corvomeyenia australis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago. Die Skelettnadeln von C. carolinensis sp. nov. weisen Merkmale auf, welche auf eine genetische Abweichung von seinen Gattungsverwandten hindeuten; überdies unterscheiden sich die Umweltsbedingungen an den Fundorten von C. carolinensis sp. nov. weitgehend von den optimalen Bedingungen für den Wuchs von C. everetti (Mills). Zur taxonomischen Bestimmung von C. carolinensis sp. nov. werden eine neue Methode der Phasenkontrastuntersuchung lebenden Schwam neue Methode der Phasenkontrastuntersuchung lebenden Schwammgewebes and verschiedene histologische und histochemische Methoden angewandt.
