Is metamorphosis a critical interval in the early life of marine fishes?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Synopsis Small volumes of food in ‘stomach’, large proportions of empty ‘stomachs’ and small maximum sizes of prey during metamorphosis of cod,Gadus morhua, all point to an energy crisis during this developmental interval. The small size of the developing stomach of the 10–14 mm long cod may be partly responsible for the above mentioned difficulties during metamorphosis. A hypothesis based on Hjort's ‘critical stage theory’ is proposed, adding another critical interval at metamorphosis. Based on the presented data on cod and reports on other species in the literature, the new critical interval is discussed for larvae of marine fish species in general.  相似文献

Published spawning seasons of sparid fish were investigated to determine if there were consistent patterns that could be related to large-scale physical variability, and whether these relationships were species-specific or characteristic of higher taxonomic groupings. For individual species, genera and the family Sparidae as a whole, there was a consistent pattern; spawning at lower latitudes was concentrated close to the month of lowest sea surface temperature, while spawning at higher latitudes was more variable with greater deviations from the month of minimum sea surface temperature. The distribution of sparids may be limited by a lack of tolerance of one or more early life-history stage to high water temperatures, so targeting spawning to the coolest part of the year could be a tactic allowing maximum penetration into warmer waters. Such a link between the physiology of early life-history stages and timing of spawning could have direct consequences for patterns of distributions over a number of taxonomic scales. If there are similar constraints on the reproduction of other species, even minor increases in water temperature due to global warming that may be within the tolerance of adults, may impose constraints on the timing of spawning, with flow-on effects for both species and whole ecosystems.  相似文献

Many species of coral reef fishes form pairs. While it is assumed that pairs represent the breeding unit of these species, the reproductive status of paired versus solitary individuals, and changes in status associated with pair-formation have seldom been investigated. In order to assess whether pairing is related to reproduction we examined whether the ontogenetic timing of pair formation coincided with the onset of maturation in four species of fishes: Chaetodon lunulatus and Chaetodon melannotus (family Chaetodontidae), and Valenciennea muralis and Valenciennea strigata (family Gobiidae). 65–78% of all fishes occurred in pairs. In C. lunulatus and V. muralis, pair-formation coincided with maturation, suggesting that these species form pairs for breeding. Further, C. lunulatus and V. muralis exhibited significant positive size-assortative pairing, which is often associated with monogamous mating. In contrast, pair formation in C. melannotus and V. strigata did not coincide with maturation. In both these species many solitary individuals were reproductive, and same sex pairs were common. While reproduction may be the basis for pairing in some species, both solitary and paired individuals are capable of breeding in others. We propose that non-reproductive mechanisms, such as predator vigilance, may explain pair-formation in coral reef fishes with non-monogamous breeding systems.  相似文献

In some species, including humans, parents receive help with offspring care. A new comparative study suggests that birds breed cooperatively when environmental conditions vary. "Apical control" is the repression of branch growth by a higher dominating branch or shoot. There has been some confusion in the literature concerning the meaning and causal mechanisms of this correlative phenomenon with those of "apical dominance," which term is often used in a strict sense to connote the repression of the initiation of axillary bud outgrowth by an active shoot apex. Although the term "apical control" is most commonly employed with respect to woody species, this phenomenon also widely occurs in herbaceous plants. Because of the strong evidence for a role of auxin as a repressor signal in apical dominance and partly because of this lack of distinction in terminology, a similar role for auxin in apical control is often assumed in spite of the obvious acropetal auxin transport difficulty and the lack of direct evidence for the acropetal transport of any inhibitor influence. In the present study with the herbaceous Ipomoea nil, it has been clearly demonstrated that while exogenous auxin (1% NAA) strongly restores apical dominance in the Thimann-Skoog experiment, auxin treatments to decapitated dominant shoots do not, in any observable way, restore apical control in lower dominated branches. Hence, in this fast-growing species, the hypothesis for the role of auxin as a repressor signal for apical control is not supported.  相似文献

The majority of the freshwater fishes in the ornamental trade now originate from captive‐bred sources, as do a large proportion of the freshwater species exhibited in public aquariums. In contrast, commercial operators who also supply marine specimens to the ornamental trade remove directly from the wild approximately 98% of the marine fishes and invertebrates exhibited in public aquariums. The common perception prevails that captive propagation is inherently a better alternative to obtaining animals from the wild. Although captive propagation has been shown to have many benefits for terrestrial species, there are a number of features unique to marine species that challenge the idea that every species should be bred in captivity. Some of the key issues relating to the development of widespread conservation‐oriented captive propagation programs include: 1) the high taxonomic diversity in marine animals; 2) the resultant variety in their reproductive methods; 3) their ecological, behavioral, physiological, and nutritional needs; and 4) our general lack of knowledge on their husbandry and medical care. There are several characteristics of marine fish and invertebrate populations that make them suitable candidates for sustainable harvest. For instance, marine teleosts are “r‐selected,” meaning that they have an extremely high fecundity, and most marine teleosts have a wide distribution and the ability to disperse over long distances. In locations considered for fish collection, appropriate management techniques should be employed to ensure that fishes and invertebrates are collected with as little impact on the ecosystem as possible. The collection of marine fishes and invertebrates for public aquariums and the hobby trade should be managed like a fishery to ensure long‐term sustainability. The public aquarium community should support marine organism certification initiatives, such as the Marine Aquarium Council (MAC). Marine organism certification will create market incentives that encourage and support quality and sustainable practices by creating consumer demand and confidence for certified organisms, practices, and industry participants. The creation of refuges that supply propagules to harvested areas, the rotation of areas fished, species‐specific size limits and seasons, and standardization of collecting, handling, and transportation techniques should be used to manage these fisheries and harvest areas. Circulating plasma endothelin (ET)-1 concentrations are substantially elevated, and correlate with the hemodynamic severity and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class, in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). In early preclinical studies involving different models of experimental heart failure, ET antagonists reduced cardiac pressures, increased cardiac output, and prolonged survival. ET receptor antagonists also impressively improved systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics in patients with CHF, without causing neurohormonal activation. However, recent clinical trials, including the ENABLE (Endothelin Antagonist Bosentan for Lowering Cardiac Events in Heart Failure) and EARTH (Endothelin A Receptor Antagonist Trial in Heart Failure) studies, have shown neutral effects in terms of mortality and symptoms. This paper describes the possible reasons why benefit was not seen in these clinical studies, and suggests what lessons can be learnt from the way the studies were undertaken to apply to future studies.  相似文献

The effects of post‐feeding thermotaxis on ileum evacuation and absorption rates were examined in the laboratory using two elasmobranch species, the Atlantic stingray Dasyatis sabina, which inhabits thermally variable environments, and the whitespotted bamboo shark Chiloscyllium plagiosum, a stenothermic fish living on Indo‐Pacific reefs. Experiments at temperatures similar to those experienced in nature revealed temperature change had no significant effect on C. plagiosum absorption or evacuation rates, suggesting stenothermic sharks cannot exploit temperature differences as a means to improve digestion efficiency. On the other hand, D. sabina showed significantly lower evacuation and absorption rates at lower temperatures. The relative decrease was greater for evacuation (Q10 = 3·08) than absorption rates (Q10 = 2·20), resulting in a significant increase in total absorption, suggesting D. sabina can benefit from using shuttling behaviour to exploit thermal variability in their environment to maximize energetic uptake.  相似文献

We present a time discrete spatial host–parasitoid model. The environment is a chain of patches connected by dispersal events. Dispersal of parasitoids is host-density dependent. When the host density is small (resp. high), the proportion of migrant parasitoids is close to unity (resp. to zero). We assume fast patch to patch dispersal with respect to local interactions. Local host–parasitoid interactions are described by the classical Nicholson–Bailey model. By using time scales separation methods (or aggregation methods), we obtain a reduced model that governs the total host and parasitoid densities (obtained by addition over all patches). The aggregated model describes the time evolution of the total number of hosts and parasitoids of the system of patches. This global model is useful to make predictions of emerging behaviour regarding the dynamics of the complete system. We study the effects of number of patches and host density-dependent parasitoid dispersal on the overall stability of the host–parasitoid system. We finally compare our stability results with the CV2 > 1 rule.  相似文献

Common generalized vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disorder characterized by a chronic and progressive loss of melanocytes from the epidermis and follicular reservoir. However, the mechanism of melanocyte disappearance has never been clearly understood, and the intervention of cellular and humoral autoimmune phenomena as primary events remains unproven. In this review, is discussed the data supporting the major theories of vitiligo, namely melanocyte destruction (autoimmune, neural and impaired redox status) and melanocyte inhibition or defective adhesion. Based on recent morphologic findings in vivo supporting a chronic detachment and transepidermal loss of melanocytes in common generalized vitiligo, a new theory is suggested proposing melanocytorrhagy as the primary defect underlying melanocyte loss, integrating most of the possible triggering/precipitating/enhancing effects of other known factors.  相似文献

Attempts to uncover the adaptive significance of density-dependent colour polyphenism in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera: Acrididae), have been unsuccessful. Desert locust juveniles can change colour as part of a phenotypically plastic response to changes in local population density known as phase polyphenism. They are typically cryptic in colour at low rearing density (solitarious phase), but become conspicuous at high density (gregarious phase). Recent evidence indicates that this colour change functions interspecifically as an aposematic signal. Other recent evidence, however, suggests that previous attempts to demonstrate an intraspecific function of gregarious coloration in mediating group interactions among locusts may have been confounded by the effects of multiple sensory cues. We reinvestigated the intraspecific function of density-dependent colour polyphenism and specifically controlled for potentially confounding olfactory and tactile cues. We found no effect of gregarious phase (yellow and black) coloration as either a gregarizing stimulus to behaviourally solitarious locusts or as a visual aggregation stimulus behaviourally to gregarious locusts. We did, however, find that nonmoving solitarious phase (green) coloration significantly increased the activity levels of behaviourally gregarious locusts. We cannot explain this result and its biological relevance remains unknown. In the absence of support for the intraspecific visual cue hypothesis, we favour an aposematic perspective on the function of density-dependent colour polyphenism in the desert locust. Bioconvection is an intriguing pattern-forming phenomenon driven by the swimming activity of various aquatic microorganisms. It is generally assumed that bioconvection has a positive effect on the entire microbial population by carrying oxygen into deep layers of non-aerated suspensions. In order to examine the presence of such a biological benefit, we analysed the correlation between bioconvective pattern formation and population growth of several Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis strains under non-aerated conditions. Bioconvection is a robust phenomenon, we observed its development in numerous cultures of various strains and growth phases. Nevertheless, evaluation of the data has not revealed detectable positive effects on population growth, questioning the potential biological relevance of bioconvection in natural habitats.  相似文献

If we lack data on the biology of rare species, then understanding of the biology of rarity will be incomplete at best, biased at worst. However, the extent of potential under-study is mostly unknown. We therefore ask for primates, one of the better known orders of mammals, whether data are lacking on rare species. The measure used is published data on a crucial aspect of biology, namely density. Rare species are here defined as those with both geographic range sizes and habitat breadths less than the median for primates; common species are at or above the median for those two measures. Globally, nearly half, 47%, of the 32 rare species lack data on their density, compared to only 10% of the 83 common species (2corr. = 17.1, p < 0.001). Within realms, Asia and Madagascar show a particularly strong bias, missing density data for over 50% of their rare species. Thus, rare species are indeed severely under-studied compared to common species, even in this well-studied mammalian taxon.  相似文献

The active compound(s) in smoke responsible for promoting seed germination of a number of plant species has so far remained unknown. A germination-promoting fraction containing approximately ten compounds has been obtained from cellulose-derived smoke. Furthermore, activity has been associated with one of the compounds in this fraction. The UV absorbance maximum and molecular weight of the active compound has been established and the molecular formula has been tentatively assigned as C8H6O3.  相似文献

The present experiment was conducted to study the growth profile of the ovulatory follicle in relation to the expression of estrus following administration of PGF(2alpha) to subestrus buffaloes. After detection of a mature corpus luteum by examination per rectum, confirmed by ultrasound scanning, subestrus buffaloes (n=20) were treated (Day 0) with single dose of Dinoprost tromethamin (25 mg, i.m.). Blood samples were collected at 0, 24 and 48 h after treatment for estimation of plasma progesterone concentration. Growth profile of the ovulatory follicle was monitored daily through ultrasound scanning starting from Day 0 until ovulation and the regression profile of CL was monitored at 0, 24 and 48 h of treatment. Estrus was detected by exposure to a fertile buffalo bull three times a day until expression of overt estrus or ovulation. Behavioral estrus was recorded in 14 animals and 6 animals ovulated silently. Sixteen animals including six animals with silent estrus ovulated from the dominant follicle present at treatment (Group A) and remaining four animals ovulated from the dominant follicle of succeeding follicular wave (Group B). The intervals from treatment to estrus (6.5+/-0.25 versus 3.2+/-0.27 days, P<0.001) and treatment to ovulation (7.5+/-0.25 versus 5.4+/-0.46 days, P<0.005) were significantly longer in animals of Group B compared with animals of Group A. Significant differences were observed in growth profile of the ovulatory follicle between animals of Groups A and B with respect to size of the follicle on Day 0 (9.8+/-0.7 versus 5.3+/-0.45 mm, P<0.001), daily growth rate (0.97+/-0.07 versus 1.6+/-0.2 mm/day, P<0.01) and increase in diameter (4.1+/-0.6 versus 7.8+/-0.7 mm, P<0.01). The animals with silent estrus (subgroup A-2) had significantly smaller diameter of the ovulatory follicle on Day 0 (7.7+/-0.4 versus 11.0+/-0.7 mm, P<0.005), its daily growth rate was significantly slower (0.7+/-0.02 versus 1.1+/-0.1 mm/day, P<0.01) and they recorded significantly longer interval from treatment to ovulation (7.3+/-0.56 versus 4.2+/-0.27 days, P<0.001) compared with the animals that showed overt estrus (subgroup A-1). The corpus luteum area (CL area) and plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentration declined continuously from 0 to 48 h after PGF(2alpha) treatment in the animals of both the Groups A and B. Non-significant differences were observed in mean CL area and plasma P(4) concentration at 0, 24 and 48 h post-treatment between animals of Groups A and B and also between animals of subgroups A-1 and A-2. The small size and the slow growth rate of the ovulatory follicle were identified as the possible cause of silent estrus in subestrus buffaloes after PGF(2alpha) treatment.  相似文献

The concept of pilot pseudopodia is reconsidered 30 years after its inauguration (Gerisch, G., Hülser, D., Malchow, D., Wick, U., 1975. Cell communication by periodic cyclic-AMP pulses. Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. B 272, 181-192). The original hypothesis stated that protruding pseudopodia serve as dynamic sensory organelles that aid a cell in perceiving variations of chemoattractant concentration and, consequently, in navigation during chemotaxis. This influential idea is reevaluated in the light of recent findings about the mechanisms governing chemotactic cell motility, morphology and dynamics of pseudopodia, and about molecular constituents and regulators of pseudopod extension and retraction. It is proposed that stimulation by a chemoattractant modulates speed of pseudopod protrusion and thereby increases cell elongation. Elongation further enhances chemotactic sensitivity of the cell to shallow chemoattractant gradients, reinforces cell polarization, and finally leads to suppression of lateral pseudopodia and continuation of cell migration in the gradient direction.  相似文献
