One egg parasite, 7 larval parasites, 2 pupal parasites and 3 larval hyperparasites were recorded parasitizing the spotted stalk borer,Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) on maize and grain sorghum in South Africa.Trichogrammatoidea lutea Girault [Trichogrammatidae] parasitized eggs ofC. partellus mainly in mid-summer. The larval parasites were active throughout the season with occasional peaks of up to 75% parasitism.Apanteles sesamiae Cameron [Braconidae], proved to be the most abundant larval parasite. It was recorded fromca. 93% of parasitized larvae but its efficiency was reduced by the hyperparasite,Aphanogmus fijiensis (Ferriére) [Ceraphronidae], which reached sometimes up to 100% parasitism on cocoons ofA. sesamiae. The efficiency ofIphiaulax sp. [Braconidae], the 2nd most abundant larval parasite, was also hindered by the hyperparasite,Eurytoma sp. [Eurytomidae] Pupal parasites were sometimes very abundant reaching up to 100% parasitism without any interference by hyperparasites. The most abundant pupal parasites wereDentichasmias busseolae Heinrich [Ichneumonidae] andPediobius furvus (Gahan) [Eulophidae].   相似文献

Among 6 laboratory hosts tested, the egg-larval parasitoidChelonus blackburni Cameron completed its development in only 3;Corcyra cephalonica Stainton,Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) andAchroia grisella (Fabricius). The parasitoid failed to develop inSpodoptera litura (Fabricius),Galleria mellonella L. andSitotroga cerealella (Olivier). The development period of the parasitoids obtained from permissive hosts correspond to the development period of their hosts. Development period ofP. operculella, A grisella andC. cephalonica were 24.7±2.0, 39.5±2.1 and 50.5±4.1 days respectively while the development period of the parasitoid reared from these hosts were 25.8±1.6, 36.4±3.5 and 42.5±3.5 days respectively. The fecundity of the parasitoids reared onA. grisella, P. operculella andC. cephalonica were 365.2±52.8, 287.9±101.9 and 248.7±50.8 respectively. The size of the parasitoids reared from the above 3 hosts also followed the similar trend. However, no significant difference was observed on the percent parasitism and the longevity of the parasitoids reared on different hosts. This study was conducted at a temperature of 24±2°C and 60±5% RH. Contribution No 46001 of Biological Control Centre (NCIPM), Bangalore.  相似文献

One primary parasite,Trioxys pallidus (Haliday) (Hym.: Braconidae), and a secondary parasite,Aphidencyrtus sp., were identified from the blackmargined aphid,Monellia caryella (Fitch) (Hom.: Aphididae), in Israeli pecan orchards. The average total parasitism for all locations sampled was 13.5%. Although a hyperparasite was discovered, it had no significantly detrimental effect on the parasite. The external, gregarious, braconid parasite,Allorhogas pyralophagus Marsh was mass released into field cages enclosing sugar cane infested with the pyralid,Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) to examine factors affecting parasitism rates and to assess the parasite's potential contribution to borer larval mortality. Three field experiments were conducted in July, September, and December, 1984. Total parasitism was 25.2% for the study and was the single most important source of borer mortality. Borers were equally susceptible to attack in leaf sheaths, whorls, and stalks in general, but larvae tunneling deep within stalks were parasitized less. An interaction between tunneling behavior of the borer and attack strategy of the parasite was important for parasite success.A. pyralophagus is probably unable to effect complete control ofE. loftini in sugar cane becauseA. pyralophagus is physically unable to parasitize borers deep in the stalks. However, the parasite may be useful as part of an intergrated pest management program, acting in concert with other parasite species, or attacking the borer in small-stemed grasses that serve as alternate host plants.   相似文献

Data are presented on survival, fecundity, and hosts ofBrachyserphus abruptus (Say), a solitary internal parasite of nitidulid (sap beetle) larvae. In the laboratory these wasps have been successfully reared fromCarpophilus hemipterus (L.),C. freemani Dobson,C. lugubris Murray,Stelidota geminata (Say),S. octomaculata (Say),S. ferruginea Reitter,Glischrochilus quadrisignatus (Say),Lobiopa insularis (Castelnau), andHaptoncus luteolus (Erichson). Field collections ofB. abruptus have been made fromS. geminata, S. octomaculata, C. hemipterus, C. lugubris, L. insularis andH. luteolus. Oviposition continues throughout most of the adult female's lifetime. Under laboratory conditions life expectancy of females wasca. 6 days. Mean number of progeny reaching adulthood per female was 57, with a 1∶1 sex ratio. First and 2nd instar nitidulids were suitable for successful development ofB. abruptus. Third instars were attacked byB. abruptus but were not successfully parasitized. Parasite development required 29 days in 1st instar hosts and 27 d. in 2nd instars. Percent parasitism in 1st instarC. hemipterus averaged 65% and for 2nd instar 45%. After parasitism, larvae ofC. hemipterus surviving to become adults averaged 0.6% for 1st instar, 9.3% for 2nd instar, and 90% for 3rd instar. This article reports the results of research only. In the present studies, life table data and intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) of the eulophid pupal parasitoid,P. furvus (Gahan) were obtained fromChilo partellus (Swinhoe) at a constant temperature of 26.7±0.6°C, 52.3±2.7% RH in the laboratory. Development of immature stages took 19.1±0.3 days; adult females lived for 7.9±3.3 (range, 2–13) days and produced a mean of 91.9±22.4 progeny per female, with a sex ratio of 1:2.9 (♂:♀). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was 0.2558/female/day; the net reproductive rate (R0), 237.25; the capacity for increase (rc) of 0.252; and the finite rate of increase (λ) of 1.29/female/day; thus, each female contributed 231.42 individuals to the population in a mean generation time of 21.38 days.   相似文献

Biological studies withChrysocharis parksi Crawford, a parasite of agromyzid leafminers, were conducted.C. parksi successfully parasitized the following species in the genusLiriomyza Mik.,L. huidobrensis (Blanchard),L. sativae Blanchard,L. trifolii (Burgess), andL. trifoliearum Spencer. Successful parasite development was recorded from 8 plant families and 16 genera. Host plants which were suitable for leafminer development to the adult stage were also suitable for parasite development. Mean immature developmental period (egg to adult, usingL. trifolii as the host) at 21.1°, 26.7°, and 32.2° C was (for both sexes) 23, 14, and 14 days, respectively. Longevity of females provided only water was inversely related to temperature; significantly longer survival occurred at 21.1° C (5.0 days) compared to 26.7° C and 32.2° C (3.2 and 2.1 days, respectively). The addition of honey to the diet significantly improved longevity of both sexes at all temperatures. Adult female parasites which were provided an average of 33.0L. trifolii larvae per day produced an average of 135 offspring at a constant 26.7° C.C. parksi host-fed on ca. 3.7 leafminer larvae per day over an 11-day adult lifespan.   相似文献

Competition between granulosis virus (GV) and the larval parasite,Sturmiopsis inferens Tns. (Tachinidae: Diptera), was studied in 3rd — and 4th — instar larvae of the sugarcane shoot borer,Chilo infuscatellus Snellen (Crambidae: Lepidoptera), under laboratory conditions. Mortality due to GV infection and parasitization was 76.8 and 47.6 per cent, respectively, when they were tested separately. But when hosts were infected simultaneously with microfeeding of GV and larval parasite, a significantly low parasitism (5.5%) was obtained compared to 74.8 per cent mortality by GV infection. When the larvae were microfed with the GV 6 days after inoculation with parasitic maggots, mortality due to the virus was reduced significantly to 20.5 per cent, but when the maggot inoculation was preceded by virus microfeeding 6 days before, parasitization was unsuccessful, while 75% of larvae died of virus. Results obtained from field — collected larvae also showed that significantly more parasite puparia were recovered from healthy larvae than from virus — infected larvae. Similar differences in parasitization were not obtained in the case of healthy or virus — infected pupae.   相似文献

During 1981 and 1982, bollworm,Heliothis zea (Boddie), and tobacco budworm,H. virescens (F.), larvae (n=3,666) were collected from 41 cotton fields near Portland, Arkansas (USA) to assess the occurrence of parasitism. Three strategies were employed to controlHeliothis spp. in these fields: (1) release ofTrichogramma pretiosum Riley; (2) insecticidal control; or (3) inaction (check). Insecticide use in nonchemical control fields was reduced, but not eliminated.Heliothis spp. larvae collected in cotton had higher parasitism rates in 1981 (30.9%) and 1982 (50.1%) than had been reported for cotton since the advent of organochlorine insecticide usage. Four species of larval parasites and 1 species of larval-pupal parasite were recorded. The larval parasiteMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson) comprised 90.6% and 94.5% of all parasitic insects reared from field collectedHeliothis spp. in 1981 and 1982, respectively. No difference (P>0.05) in level of parasitism existed betweenH. zea andH. virescens. Differences between treatments occurred only in 1982 whenH. zea larvae were parasitized at a greater (P<0.05) rate in check fields (68.3%) than in insecticidal control fields (44.3%). Higher levels of larval parasitism in cotton fields may be a consequence of reduced insecticide usage and changes in materials applied, particularly the pyrethroids. Microplitis mediator (Haliday) a gregarious endoparasite was recorded for the first time fromAgrotis segetum (Schiff) in Ankara, Turkey. The female parasites found their hosts by responding to the faeces of the caterpillars. An average, females laid 15.5±1.6 eggs in the bodies of their hosts. The newly laid eggs were elongated, oval in shape and 0.23±0.004 mm long and 0.07 mm wide. They hatched in 5, 4 and 3 days at 20±2°C, 25±2°C and 30±2°C respectively when maintained at 60–70% R.H. and 14∶10 light∶dark regime. At the same temperatures, the larval stage lasted for 24.9±0.6, 18.2±0.4 and 17.1±0.5 days respectively. The prepupal stage was completed in 2 days at 25±2°C, whereas the prepupal and pupal (cocoon) stage lasted 10.9±0.2, 7.0±0.1 and 6.2±0.1 days respectively at the temperatures mentioned above. The adults started mating and feeding shortly after emergence. Female parasites started laying after one day, 7–11 hours and 5–7 hours at the temperatures stated above. At these temperatures females lived for 10.8±0.2, 5.4±0.1, 4.6±0.1 days and laid on average 556, 484 and 363 eggs respectively, whereas the males survived 10.5±0.3, 4.7±0.1 and 4.4±0.1 days respectively.   相似文献

Following the successful introduction ofEpidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) for biological control of the cassava mealybug (CM)Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr. in southwestern Nigeria in 1981 and 1982, 11 groups of cassava fields were sampled every 2 weeks up to 1988 for impact assessment. After 1984, CM populations remained mostly below 10 per tip despite the presence of native hyperparasitoids, demonstrating the long-term success of biological control byE. lopezi in the region. Indigenous polyphagous coccinellids were found only during peak host densities, whereas the specificE. lopezi was common throughout the year. During some periods, percentage parasitism indicated delayed density dependence. Since 89% of all sampled cassava tips had no CM at all and the parasitisme is very mobile, parasitization rates were also calculated for individual infested tips (N=4,878). Parasitism increased slightly with host density on tips having between 1 and 10 CM of the 3rd and 4th instars, indicating positive density dependence. Such tips comprised 64% of all infested tips. At higher host densities, parasitism rates fell rapidly. The results are discussed in view of different theories on population regulation by biological control agents.   相似文献

High numbers of tarnished plant bugs [Lygus lineolaris (Palisot)], were once common in alfalfa, as was a low level of parasitism (9%) by the native Peristenus pallipes (Curtis). After the bivoltine European parasite Peristenus digoneutis Loan became well established, average parasitism of the first and second generations increased to 64%, and tarnished plant bug numbers dropped by 65%. This reduced host density eventually caused a decline in total parasitism by both parasite species to 22%. A few P. digoneutis also attacked the alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), but did not reduce this pest or increase its parasitism rate. At another location, where P. digoneutis is not established, parasitism of first generation alfalfa plant bugs, an adventive (accidently introduced) pest, was increased to 21% by the introduced univoltine parasite, Peristenus conradi Marsh, and a slight reduction in the pest may have resulted. P. digoneutis did not parasitize the meadow plant bug, Leptopterna dolabrata (L.), an adventive pest of forage grasses, so did not affect this mirid or its parasite. Neither introduced parasite eliminated the native parasites of the tarnished or alfalfa plant bugs. The narrow host ranges of the braconid parasites of mirid nymphs are contrasted with the broad host range of the native tachinid parasite [Phasia robertsoni (Towns.)] of adult mirids. The major changes in mirid abundance and their mortality by parasites that slowly occurred during this 19-year study demonstrate the need for long-term field research, to adequately document and understand these complex interactions.  相似文献

Townesilitus bicolor (Wesmael), a parasite of some crucifer-infesting species ofPhyllotreta in Europe, was released in Manitoba Canada in 1978–83, in an attempt to reduce populations ofPhyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) andP. striolata (Fab.). Releases totalled 1936 adults ofT. bicolor and approximately 2639Phyllotreta collected in Manitoba and parasitized in the laboratory. No evidence of establishment was found up to 1985 at either of the 2 release sites. The small numbers of parasite released, and dispersal of the host population twice each year, have reduced the probability of the parasite becoming established and of establishment being detected. At 21 °C,Spalangia nigra Latreille (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) averaged 29.3 days between exposure and emergence of 1st progeny from host house flies,Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). At 27 °C, the average developmental time to 1st emergence was reduced to 26.6 days, and a majority of adult wasps emerged from host house fly puparia between 29 and 40 days postoviposition. The sex ratio of progeny ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 female-to-male, but all progeny of virgin females were male. Male wasps lived from 6.8–15 and females 11–17.8 days at 27 °C; honey as a food source increased longevity. No significant differences in parasitism byS. nigra were associated with host house fly pupal densities ranging from 1 to 200 pupae per female-male pair of wasps, but average percent parasitism decreased at host densities greater than 50. House fly pupae exposed to parasitism at ages ranging from 4 to 96 h did not differ in subsequent production of adult flies.S. nigra did not demonstrate preference for house flies or stable flies,Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) as hosts. The results of these studies indicate thatS. nigra may contribute significantly to previously unexplained mortality of house flies and stable flies.   相似文献

The levels of egg parasitism byTrichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on populations ofHelicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were recorded on sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and on two flushes of flowers on short-duration pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.).H. armigera oviposition was concentrated on the early flowering stage of sorghum and the flowering and early podding stages of both flushes of pigeonpea. Parasitism on sorghum increased rapidly as egg density increased and reached a peak of 74.6%. Parasitism on pigeonpea was concentrated onH. armigera eggs laid on the first flush of pigeonpea flowers with a maximum of 69.2%. These high levels of parasitism on pigeonpea coincided with the period of parasite activity on sorghum. The levels of parasitism then declined rapidly and only very low levels were detected on a second flush of flowers. This rapid decline resulted in the overall egg mortality caused byTrichogramma on pigeonpea to be low, with a maximum of 7.8% caused by parasitism, compared to 34.4% on sorghum. The pattern of parasitism suggests that a transfer of parasites occurred from sorghum to pigeonpea. The rapid decline of parasitism on the pigeonpea indicates that parasite populations cannot be sustained on pigeonpea once the influx from sorghum stops. The results are discussed in terms of a possible method of encouraging the transfer of parasites from sorghum to short-duration pigeonpea by producing a more continuous cropping environment.  相似文献

The tachinid flyClausicella suturata Rondani is a solitary parasite ofEctomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller). It was grown under laboratory conditions (26±0.5°C, 55±5% R.H.) and the host-parasite relationships were studied. The different stages of the parasite were briefly described. The eggs are deposited on the carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.,Caesalpiniaceae) pods, near the openings of the host's tunnels and hatch immediately. The Ist instar maggot is directed by the web fibers of the host towards the caterpillar which is hidden in the carob pod. The parasites develop normally only in 4th and 5th instar caterpillars. The parasitized caterpillar spins its cocoon inside the carob pod before being killed by the parasite. The fully grown maggot leaves the host and pupates inside its cocoon. Adult longevity is dependent upon the presence of carbohydrate in the diet. Maximal male and female longevity (50% survival of 21 and 17.5 days respectively) was reached on a carbohydrate diet and water, at 26°C and 55% R.H. Newly emerged females readily mate with one or two-day old males. The average fecundity of a female is 202 eggs, deposited during 13.6 days, after an incubation period of 6.9 days. Superparasitism is common in nature but only one maggot is successful in completing its development.  相似文献

Field and laboratory choice tests in which searching adultEncarsia opulenta Silvestri were exposed to variable densities of citrus blackfly,Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, indicated the following: (1) a direct functional relationship between adult parasite aggregation and host density, resulting in (2) a direct density-dependent mortality ofA. woglumi within a single generation timespan. The implications of such nonrandom searching patterns byE. opulenta on stability of the host-parasite interaction on Texas citrus are discussed.  相似文献

We examined trade-offs between fitness components and the parasitoid avoidance behavior of the arrowhead scale, Unaspis yanonensis Kuwana (Homoptera: Diaspididae). We examined the performance of two settling modes: singleton and double settling with the burrower under the burrowee. Each of these modes differs in vulnerability to parasitism by Aphytis yanonensis DeBach et Rosen and Coccobius fulvus Compere et Annecke (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), and performance. Field and laboratory observations revealed smaller body size and lower parasitism of burrower scales, while both singletons and burrowees showed the opposite tendency (larger body size and a greater parasitism rate). Laboratory observations under parasitoid-free conditions revealed greater mortality and reduced growth rate for simulated burrowers than for singletons during the 40-day nymphal period. This suggests that competition for food resources reduces performance. The results also suggest trade-offs between parasitoid avoidance and resource acquisition ability in U. yanonensis. The trade-offs also explain our previous findings, that introduction of the parasitoids increased the proportion of burrowers, but that within seven years equilibrium was reached at fairly low levels (ca. 5%) in the field, even under intense parasitism.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions (22±2°C, 60%±5% H.R.; and 16L.: 8D. photoperiod), the rearing of the 2 main parasitoids ofPhloeotribus scarabaeoides (Bernard, 1788) in Southern Spain:Cheiropachus quadrum (Fabricius, 1787) andRaphitelus maculatus Walker, 1834 (Hym.: Pteromalidae) has been carried out. Several densities of population of the parasitoids have been tested in order to determine their reproductive behaviour, and this is significant if the output of a rearing is to be increased. A great competition among the individuals of the same sex has been observed; in the case of the ΦΦ, a potential negative correlation with the increase of density of population, has been noted. The biotic potential belonging to the 2 principal parasitoids species with and without competition, are calculated, and the aspects concerning the parasitoid colonization of the olive tree beetle infestation spots, are discussed.   相似文献
