This study compares the effects of convective and radiant heat on the discharge rates of the warm cell of a thin hair-like sensillum of the tick and of the cold cells of small peg-shaped sensilla of the locust and the cockroach. The temperature rates imposed by the convective heat contained in the air stream used for stimulation are reflected by the discharge rate of the thermoreceptors. We determined the increment in radiant heat that results in the same change in discharge rate as a given increment in temperature due to convection. The amount of infrared radiation required to produce the same effect as a 1 degrees C change in temperature differs for the sensory cells of the tick, locust and cockroach, respectively, suggesting differences in the ability of the sensilla to take up and transfer radiant heat. The power of radiation required to modulate the discharge rates is very high and outside the biologically meaningful range in all cases. Obviously the adequate stimulus for the examined sensilla is convective heat and not radiant heat.  相似文献

Summary The activity of neurons from the trigeminal ganglion of pigeons have been recorded while cooling or warming the beak. Thermosensitive neurons were seldom compared with mechanosensitive units. From a total of 16 thermosensitive neurons, 13 were excited by cooling and 3 by warming. The impulse frequency strongly depended on temperature. At constant temperatures, constant firing rates were established. The static curves of cold-sensitive units showed, that with decreasing temperature a nearly linear rise in firing rate occurred between about 36 °C and 20 °C. One quantified, warm-sensitive neuron showed, with increasing temperature, a nearly linear rise between about 35 °C and 44 °C. Sudden cooling or warming caused no pronounced overshoot as in mammals. Six cold-sensitive neurons were totally inhibited by rewarming as were 2 warm-sensitive units by cooling. No comparable influence of temperature on the discharge rate of some slowly-adapting mechanoreceptors (pressure stimulus) was exhibited.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB Bionach).  相似文献

Sensory receptors in the rostral portion of the beak skin of a single specimen of the rare long-beaked echidna, Zaglossus bruijnii, are described. Mucous glands which have been modified to accommodate sensory innervation, similar to those seen in Ornithorhynchus, are found in the rostral 2 cm of the beak skin, anterior to the maxillofacial foramen, at a density of approximately 12/mm2. The papillary epidermal portion of the gland ducts are walled by concentric layers of keratinocytes, and each duct is innervated by 10–15 myelinated nerve terminals. The mucous gland receptors in Zaglossus are intermediate in structure between those of Ornithorhynchus and Tachyglossus, but are similar enough to the former to suggest that electroreception may play a major role in the sensory experience of Zaglossus. Push-rod mechanoreceptors also occur throughout the same region of beak skin, and appear similar to those described for Tachyglossus.  相似文献

1. Each segmental ganglion of the leech Hirudo medicinalis contains 6 touch (T) cells, 4 pressure (P) cells and 4 nociceptive (N) cells. The receptive terminals of these cells innervate the skin in discrete areas. These cells are known to have extrasynaptic receptors. 2. We tested the effect of transmitter substances present in leech CNS on the sensitivity of T and P cells to mechanical stimuli. Substances tested included octopamine, FMRFamide, proctolin, substance P, glutamate, GABA, acetylcholine and serotonin. 3. Only acetylcholine and serotonin had consistent effects. Serotonin (1 x 10(-3) M) increased the number of action potentials of T cells elicited by a standard stimulus. Serotonin (1 x 10(-4) M) and acetylcholine (1 x 10(-3) M) increased the number and frequency of action potentials in P cells.  相似文献

We previously showed that slow-ramp rectal distensions induce graded inhibitions of the somatic nociceptive RIII reflex recorded from the lower limb, which correlated with both distension volume and visceral sensation. In contrast, rapid phasic rectal distensions induced facilitatory or biphasic effects (i.e., facilitations followed by inhibitions) depending on the level of distension. To examine the role of mucosal and serosal rectal mechanoreceptors in these viscerosomatic interactions, we analyzed, in six healthy volunteers, the effects of both types of rectal distension on the RIII reflex after topical application of lidocaine or placebo administered in a double-blind and crossover fashion. Inhibitions of the RIII reflex induced by both slow-ramp and rapid distensions were strongly reduced after administration of lidocaine but not after placebo. In contrast, facilitations of the RIII reflex observed during the initial phase of rapid distensions were not modified after lidocaine or placebo applications. These results suggest that inhibitions, but not facilitations, of the nociceptive RIII reflex triggered by rectal distensions depend preferentially on the activation of superficial mucosal receptors. This reflexologic technique might thus represent an interesting tool for studying the role of the different rectal mechanoreceptors involved in visceral sensations.  相似文献

In anaesthetized cats, vagal unitary discharges originating from the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (L.O.S.) were recorded in nodose ganglia by means of glass microelectrodes. Numerous mechanoreceptors located both in mucosa and muscular layers were found in L.O.S. The mucus mechanoreceptors (high threshold receptors) were activated by strong compressions and distensions, by rapid passage of liquid through the oesophagus and by striking the mucosa. The muscular mechanoreceptors (low threshold receptors) responded to contraction and distension of L.O.S. Both receptors were connected to nonmyelinated fibres (conduction velocity: 0.9-1.4 m/sec).  相似文献

We used oxygen isotope measurements from Holocene surface sediments to infer optimum temperature and temperature sensitivity of the planktic foraminiferal species Globigerinoides ruber (pink) and Globigerinoides sacculifer. The (isotopic) optimum temperature of G. ruber (pink) is close to 27°C. G. sacculifer seems to have optimum vital conditions around 22°C and is less temperature sensitive than G. ruber (pink). Our estimations of optimum temperature and temperature sensitivity are in good accordance with laboratory and field investigations. Two simple experiments show that the temperature sensitivity of planktic foraminifera, determined from oxygen isotopes, can influence phase and amplitude of oxygen isotope records, if the temperature distribution at the sea surface changes through time. To use this distortion for paleoceanography, we suggest to derive an ‘isotopic transfer function’ which allows the calculation of average temperature, temperature variability and the isotopic composition of seawater if the oxygen-isotope differences between at least three species are known.  相似文献

Summary Using a two-compartment metabolism chamber, we measured oxygen consumption simultaneously with evaporative water loss (EWL) separately from the skin and respiratory tract of pigeons exposed to various air temperatures and humidities. Both respiratory (REWL) and cutaneous (CEWL) water loss increased markedly with increasing air temperature, and latent heat loss through both routes dissipated large fractions of internal heat production during mild heat stress. CEWL as a percentage of total EWL significantly exceeded REWL (60±1.5%) at thermoneutral air temperatures, and was also a substantial fraction of total EWL at lower and higher temperatures. Both REWL and CEWL were inverse functions (apparently linear) of ambient humidity at 20 and 30 °C. In 12 tested subjects, we studied changes in the frequency-amplitude EEG characteristics evoked by thermostimulation of the left palm (its immersion in a pool of water with a changing temperature); temperatures of 24 and 42°C provided cooling and heating stimulations. Cooling of the palm resulted in an increase of the power of fast EEG oscillations, especially in the parietal and occipital regions and in the right temporal zone. Heating of the palm skin evoked an increase in the power of α- and θ-waves, and the latter component was most noticeably intensified in the frontal and right temporal regions. Possible mechanisms responsible for EEG modifications under conditions of thermostimulation of the skin are discussed.  相似文献
