In contrast to historical assumptions about the affective nature of animal vocalizations, it is now clear that many vertebrates are capable of producing specific alarm calls in response to different predators, calls that provide information that goes beyond the motivational state of a caller. However, although these calls function referentially, it does not mean that they are devoid of motivational content. Studies on meerkats (Suricata suricatta) directly support this conclusion. The acoustic structure of their alarm calls simultaneously encodes information that is both motivational (level of urgency) and referential (predator specific). In this study, we investigated whether alarm calls of young meerkats undergo developmental modification and whether the motivational or the referential aspect of calls changes more over time. We found that, based on their acoustic structure, calls of young showed a high correct assignment to low- and high-urgency contexts but, in contrast to adults, low assignment to specific predator types. However, the discrimination among predator types was better in high-urgency than in low-urgency contexts. Our results suggest that acoustic features related to level of urgency are expressed earlier than those related to predator-specific information and may support the idea that referential calls evolve from motivational signals. 相似文献

A total of 378 adult and juvenile rhesus macaques of both sexes were transferred from single- to isosexual pair-housing arrangements. The incidence of serious injury resulting from partner incompatibility was 0.8% during the first year after pair formation. In this study, we present a methodology that identifies acoustic units in Gunnison's prairie dog alarm calls and then uses those units to classify the alarm calls and bouts according to the species of predator that was present when the calls were vocalized. While traditional methods measure specific acoustic parameters in order to describe a vocalization, our method uses the variation in the internal structure of a vocalization to define possible information structures. Using a simple representation similar to that used in human speech to identify vowel sounds, a software system was developed that uses this representation to recognize acoustic units in prairie dog alarm calls. These acoustic units are then used to classify alarm calls and their associated bouts according to the species of predator that was present when the alarm calls were vocalized. Identification of bouts with up to 100% accuracy was obtained. This work represents a first step toward revealing the details of how information is encoded in a complex nonhuman communication system. Furthermore, the techniques discussed in this paper are not restricted to a database of prairie dog alarm calls. They could be applied to any animal whose vocalizations include multiple simultaneous frequencies. 相似文献

In this study we describe the design and application of an automated classification system that utilizes artificial intelligence to corroborate the finding that Gunnison's prairie dogs have different alarm calls for different species of predators. This corroboration is strong because it utilizes an entirely different analysis technique than that used in the original research by Slobodchikoff et al. [Slobodchikoff, C.N., Fischer, C., Shapiro, J., 1986. Predator-specific alarm calls of prairie dogs. Am. Zool. 26, 557] or in subsequent study done by Slobodchikoff et al. [Slobodchikoff, C.N., Kiriazis, J., Fischer, C., Creef, E., 1991. Semantic information distinguishing individual predators in the alarm calls of Gunnison's prairie dogs. Anim. Behav. 42, 713-719]. The study described here also is more completely automated than earlier study in this area. This automation allowed a large volume of field data to be processed where all measurements of relevant parameters were performed through software control. Previous study processed a smaller data set and utilized manual measurement techniques. The new classification system, which combines fuzzy logic and an artificial neural network, classified alarm calls correctly according to the eliciting predator species, achieving accuracy levels ranging from 78.6 to 96.3% on raw field data digitized with low quality audio equipment. 相似文献

Acoustic variation can convey identity information, facilitate social interactions among individuals and may be useful in identifying sex and group affiliation of senders. Giant otters live in highly cohesive groups with exclusive territories along water bodies defended by the entire group by means of acoustic and chemical signals. Snorts are harsh alarm calls, emitted in threat contexts, which commonly elicit the cohesion and the alert behaviour of the members of the group. The aim of this study was to determine whether giant otter snorts have potential to be used for individual discrimination. We tested this hypothesis by verifying if the acoustic characteristics of snorts vary between two study areas, among social groups and individuals, and between males and females. Snort acoustic variables did not differ significantly among study areas, but varied significantly among groups, individuals and between sexes, with higher discrimination between sexes. The frequency of formants (F1–F5) and formant dispersion (DF) potentially allow identity coding among groups, individuals and sexes. The stronger sex discrimination of snorts may be related to information on body size carried by formant frequencies and dispersion, indicating acoustic sexual dimorphism in giant otters. Acoustic differences among groups and individuals are more likely learned, since we did not find evidence for a genetic signal encoded in the snort variables measured. We conclude that the snorts carry information that could be used for individual or group recognition. 相似文献

This article is focused on the role of anisotropic elasticity in the simulation of the load distribution in a human mandible, due to a lateral bite on the leftmost premolar. Based on experimental evidence, orthotropy of the elastic properties of the bone tissue has been adopted. The trajectories of anisotropic elasticity are reconstructed from (i) the organ's geometry and (ii) from coherent structures which can be recognized from the spatial distribution of the grey values coming from computer tomography (CT). A sensitivity analysis comprising various three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) simulations reveals the relevance of elastic anisotropy for the load carrying behavior of a human mandible: comparison of the load distributions in isotropic and anisotropic simulations indicates that anisotropy seems to "spare" the mandible from loading. Moreover, a maximum degree of anisotropy leads to kind of load minimization of the mandible, expressed by a minimum of different norms of local volumetric strain, evaluated throughout the organ. The observed optimization with respect to volumetric rather than shear strain seems to confirm the frequently emphazised role of volumetric-strain-induced fluid flow for the stimulation of cellular activity. 相似文献

In patrilocal groups, females preferentially move to join their mate’s paternal relatives. The gender‐biased gene flow generated by this cultural practice is expected to affect genetic diversity across human populations. Greater female than male migration is predicted to result in a larger decrease in between‐group differentiation for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) than for the non‐recombining part of the Y chromosome (NRY). We address the question of how patrilocality affects the distribution of genetic variation in human populations controlling for confounding factors such as ethno‐linguistic heterogeneity and geographic distance which possibly explain the contradictory results observed in previous studies. By combining genetic and bio‐demographic data from Lesotho and Spain, we show that preferential female migration over short distances appears to minimize the impact of a generally higher female migration rate in patrilocal communities, suggesting patrilocality might influence genetic variation only at short ranges. 相似文献

Cytotoxic lymphocytes have the capacity to kill microbes directly; however, the mechanisms involved are poorly understood. Using Cryptococcus neoformans, which causes a potentially fatal fungal infection in HIV-infected patients, our previous studies showed that granulysin is necessary, while perforin is dispensable, for CD8 T lymphocyte fungal killing. By contrast, the mechanisms by which NK cells exert their antimicrobial activity are not clear, and in particular, the contribution of granulysin and perforin to NK-mediated antifungal activity is unknown. Primary human NK cells and a human NK cell line YT were found to constitutively express granulysin and perforin, and possessed anticryptococcal activity, in contrast to CD8 T lymphocytes, which required stimulation. When granulysin protein and mRNA were blocked by granulysin small interfering RNA, the NK cell-mediated antifungal effect was not affected in contrast to the abrogated activity observed in CD8 T lymphocytes. However, when perforin was inhibited by concanamycin A, and silenced using hairpin small interfering RNA, the anticryptococcal activities of NK cells were abrogated. Furthermore, when granulysin and perforin were both inhibited, the anticryptococcal activities of the NK cells were not reduced further than by silencing perforin alone. These results indicate that the antifungal activity is constitutively expressed in NK cells in contrast to CD8 T lymphocytes, in which it requires prior activation, and perforin, but not granulysin, plays the dominant role in NK cell anticryptococcal activity, in contrast to CD8 T lymphocytes, in which granulysin, but not perforin, plays the dominant role in anticryptococcal activity. 相似文献

Scrub typhus is a common and underdiagnosed cause of febrile illness in Southeast Asia, caused by infection with Orientia tsutsugamushi. Inoculation of the organism at a cutaneous mite bite site commonly results in formation of a localized pathological skin reaction termed an eschar. The site of development of the obligate intracellular bacteria within the eschar and the mechanisms of dissemination to cause systemic infection are unclear. Previous postmortem and in vitro reports demonstrated infection of endothelial cells, but recent pathophysiological investigations of typhus patients using surrogate markers of endothelial cell and leucocyte activation indicated a more prevalent host leucocyte than endothelial cell response in vivo. We therefore examined eschar skin biopsies from patients with scrub typhus to determine and characterize the phenotypes of host cells in vivo with intracellular infection by O. tsutsugamushi, using histology, immunohistochemistry, double immunofluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscopy. Immunophenotyping of host leucocytes infected with O. tsutsugamushi showed a tropism for host monocytes and dendritic cells, which were spatially related to different histological zones of the eschar. Infected leucocyte subsets were characterized by expression of HLADR+, with an "inflammatory" monocyte phenotype of CD14/LSP-1/CD68 positive or dendritic cell phenotype of CD1a/DCSIGN/S100/FXIIIa and CD163 positive staining, or occasional CD3 positive T-cells. Endothelial cell infection was rare, and histology did not indicate a widespread inflammatory vasculitis as the cause of the eschar. Infection of dendritic cells and activated inflammatory monocytes offers a potential route for dissemination of O. tsutsugamushi from the initial eschar site. This newly described cellular tropism for O. tsutsugamushi may influence its interaction with local host immune responses. 相似文献

Elevated expression of gp78 has been observed in many types of cancers including lung, stomach, colon, liver and skin cancer. But there is no report about its expression in prostate cancers. In this study, using immunohistochemical staining we found gp78 is highly expressed in prostate cancers especially early stage tumors, but not in normal prostate tissues. gp78 protein expression is heterogeneous. In some tumors it was expressed in basal cells, while others in stromal cells. For gp78 is a ubiquitin E3 ligase, we then investigated the expression pattern of its cognate E2 (ubiquitin conjugating enzyme)-Ube2g2 in prostate cancers. We found it was expressed in both cancerous and normal tissues of prostate without significant differences in expression level. And unlike gp78, it exhibited a homogeneous expression pattern in different cell types in prostate tissues. In conclusion, our results indicate that gp78 is expressed specifically in human prostate cancer rather than normal prostate tissues, it could be a putative biomarker for prostate cancer diagnosis. 相似文献

Especially in birds, it is widely found that the size of individual prey items follows the size of the instruments of prey capture, handling and processing, i.e. bill size. In fact, this is the natural history basis of major discoveries on adaptive evolution in the face of changing food resources. In some birds, e.g. the molluscivore shorebirds ingesting hard‐shelled prey, most of the prey processing takes place within the digestive tract. This study of a salvaged sample of actively feeding great knots Calidris tenuirostris accidentally drowned in fishing nets in northern China, is the first documentation of diet selection at the level of the individual in previously well‐studied molluscivore shorebirds. Diet composition was not associated with the length of the bill, but with the mass of the muscular gizzard. Gizzard mass, which unlike bill length is a phenotypically flexible trait, enables great knots to adjust to changing food resources as an individual, i.e. instantly responding to the food on offer. For migratory species like great knots which rely on seasonal sequences of interdistant feeding areas offering prey with a variety of characteristics, the capacity to individually adjust appears a key adaptation. 相似文献

Stem cells in adult organism are responsible for cell turnover and tissue regeneration. The study of stem cell stress response contributes to our knowledge on the mechanisms of damaged tissue repair. Previously, we demonstrated that sublethal heat shock (HS) induced apoptosis in human embryonic stem cells. This study aimed to investigate HS response of human adult stem cells. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultivated in vitro were challenged with sublethal HS. It was found that sublethal HS did not affect the cell viability assessed by annexin V/propidium staining. However, MSCs subjected to severe HS exhibited features of stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS): irreversible cell cycle arrest, altered morphology, increased expression of senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity, and induction of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 protein. High level of Hsp70 accumulation induced by sublethal HS did not return to the basal level, at least, after 72 h of the cell recovery when most cells exhibited SIPS hallmarks. MSCs survived sublethal HS, and resumed proliferation sustained the properties of parental MSCs: diploid karyotype, replicative senescence, expression of the cell surface markers, and capacity for multilineage differentiation. Our results showed for the first time that in human MSCs, sublethal HS induced premature senescence rather than apoptosis or necrosis. MSC progeny that survived sublethal HS manifested stem cell properties of the parental cells: limited replicative life span and multilineage capacity. 相似文献

Cord blood leukocytes (CBL) stimulated with PHA, Con A, or with the monoclonal antibody OKT3 proliferate normally but produce very low titers of IFN-gamma. This defect was not observed with maternal leukocytes collected at the time of delivery, indicating that the defective production of IFN-gamma in CBL is not a mere consequence of a hormonal change associated with labor. CBL produced large amounts of IFN-gamma (comparable to those observed in adult control and in mothers) after stimulation with staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA). Furthermore, gamma-irradiation with as little as 500 or 1000 rad, or incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 hr, reversed the defect in PHA-induced IFN-gamma secretion. This finding indicates that the defective secretion of IFN-gamma of CBL is not intrinsic, but rather is the consequence of a subtle dysregulation. We could not find evidence for a defective accessory function with cord blood monocytes, because the addition of adherent cells from adult donors did not reverse the defect. In co-cultures of adult leukocytes and CBL, PHA-induced IFN-gamma secretion was comparable to that of adult cultures tested alone. Nonirradiated CBL were not able to suppress IFN-gamma secretion by irradiated autologous leukocytes. Together, our results suggest that the defective PHA-induced IFN-gamma secretion of CBL is the result of an original type of dysregulation and is associated with an excessive sensitivity to suppressive signals rather than excessive suppressor function. 相似文献

Styrax caporum is a native shrub from the Brazilian savanna. Most of its leaves are diaheliotropic, whereas some are paraheliotropic, mainly at noon. A previous study of this species revealed higher stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rates (E) in para- compared to diaheliotropic leaves, and a rise in CO2 assimilation rates (A) with an increase of irradiance for paraheliotropic leaves. We hypothesized that this species exploits the paraheliotropism to enhance the light use efficiency, and that it is detected only if gas exchange is measured with light interception by both leaf surfaces. Gas exchange was measured with devices that enabled light interception on only one of the leaf surfaces and with devices that enabled light interception by both leaf surfaces. Water relations, relative reflected light intensity, leaf temperature (Tl), and leaf anatomical analyses were also performed. When both leaf surfaces were illuminated, a higher A, E, and gs were observed in para- compared to diaheliotropic leaves; however, A did not depend on gs, which did not influence CO2 accumulation in the stomatal cavity (Ci). When only the adaxial leaf surface was illuminated, a greater A was detected for para- than for diaheliotropic leaves only at 11:00 h; no differences in Tl were observed between leaf types. Light curves revealed that under non-saturating light the adaxial side of paraheliotropic leaves had higher A than the abaxial side, but they showed similar values under saturating light. Although the abaxial leaf side was highly reflective, both surfaces presented the same response pattern for green light reflection, which can be explained by the compact spongy parenchyma observed in the leaves, increasing light use efficiency in terms of CO2 consumption for paraheliotropic leaves.
