The seed damaging fly, Ophiomyia lantanae is a widespread agent that infests the fruits and seeds of Lantana camara. Its effectiveness in reducing seed dispersal or seedling recruitment has not been comprehensively tested. We determined the effects of O. lantanae damage on fruit removal rates of L. camara in a field study. We also investigated recruitment responses (seed germination in growth cabinets and seedling emergence in pot trials) of two common L. camara biotypes, pink and pink-edged red (PER) to O. lantanae damage. We found that fewer damaged fruits were removed than undamaged fruits, suggesting that frugivores select against damaged fruit. In all recruitment experiments, the responses to damage were biotype dependent. In germination experiments, these differential responses were primarily due to significantly reduced germination of damaged PER seeds. Seedling emergence from pots of the PER biotype was also lower in damaged seeds (27.5%) than undamaged seeds (56.1%). In contrast, emergence increased with seed damage in the pink biotype, from 28.2 to 41.1%. O. lantanae damage significantly reduced seed mass only in the smaller seeded PER biotype. In the larger seeded pink biotype, it may have promoted seedling emergence by interfering with dormancy mechanisms. We also examined in situ seed banks at L. camara populations prior to peak seed production. Mean viable seed densities ranged from 78.6 to 402.8 seeds m−2. Of these, non-dormant seeds comprised 24.6 to 98.2 seeds m−2, suggesting that recruitment is unlikely to be seed limited. We conclude that while O. lantanae influences recruitment and dispersal processes, the magnitude of the responses measured are unlikely to greatly influence plant densities in south-east Queensland infestations.  相似文献

Abstract Prairie restoration at the northern edge of the Great Plains can be frustrated by previously established non‐native perennial grasses. We compared the emergence of a widely introduced grass, Agropyron cristatum, and a common native grass, Bouteloua gracilis, in a 4‐year‐old field experiment in which the Agropyron‐dominated vegetation had either been left intact or treated annually with herbicide. This was done at two levels of water supply, reflecting conditions expected in wet and dry years, to examine the effects of among‐year variability in precipitation. Water addition significantly increased the emergence of both surface‐sown and buried (1 cm deep) seeds. Herbicide treatment of neighbors did not increase the emergence of experimentally added seeds. Emergence was much greater for buried (80%) than surface‐sown seeds (20%). Significantly more Bouteloua than Agropyron germinated from experimentally buried seeds. Whereas only a single seedling of Bouteloua emerged from the existing seed bank, the mean density of Agropyron seedlings emerging from the seed bank was 930/m2 (range, 0 to 6,455/m2). Surprisingly, the emergence of Agropyron from the seed bank was not decreased by 4 years of herbicide treatment, possibly because herbicide may release Agropyron from intraspecific competition and allow increased seed production to compensate for decreased plant abundance. In summary, we found few differences between Agropyron and Bouteloua in spring and summer emergence at high or low water availability. The persistence of Agropyron stands despite repeated herbicide application may be partly due to increased seed production.

Merremia boisiana (Gagnep) van Ooststr. is a noxious fast growing woody vine and is able to grow overtop other plants, causing the death of plants underneath and forming monospecies stands. To formulate management responses, we assessed its seed and vegetative reproduction efficacy through indoor and field experiments. The number of flowers counted from bagged infructescences in Guangzhou ranged from 25 to 172, with an average of 80.80. Counting the seeds of bagged infructescences had shown that there were only 1.58 hard testa seeds in each infructescence. Seed vitality tests using red ink indicated that only 68.6% of hard testa and filled seeds were viable. The emergence rate of scarified hard testa seeds in the sand bed was 31.96%. Under imitated natural conditions, 8% of hard testa seeds could germinate, and 9% still retained their germination potential in one year. Thus, seedlings should be monitored and removed in a timely fashion after any attempt of clearing. Moving soil or transplanting plant from infested patches should be strictly prohibited at least for several years. All considered, an infructescence contributed 0.3 seedlings. The investigation in the field found no seedlings either inside or at the perimeter of the patch, suggesting scant expansion by means of seed dispersal. Therefore, the elimination effort could be focused on a relatively restricted scale of patches. Of 630 cuttings of young shoots, old shoots and old lying shoots with or without growth regulators, there were only four (or 0.63%) established individuals. Air-layering shoots all died in two months. Poor cuttings and air-layering reproduction indicated that regeneration from fragments of removed stems or accidentally dropped ones was quite unlikely, and thus mechanical removal was safe.  相似文献

Mycoparasitic Pythium species with spiny oogonia were surveyed in 50 Palestinian agricultural fields subject to different cropping practices using the Sclerotia Bait Technique (SBT) and the Surface-Soil-Dilution-Plate method (SSDP) with the selective VP3 medium. The mycoparasitic Pythium species were obtained from 21 (42%) soils using the SSDP method and from 37 (74%) soils using SBT. Pythium acanthicum and P. oligandrum were isolated by both methods, whereas P. periplocum was isolated only by the SBT. Using a newly modified dual plate culture method (MDPCM), the three mycoparasites showed varying antagonistic performance against several Pythium host species under a range of in vitro conditions. However, P. periplocum and P. oligandrum were found to be active biocontrol agents against P. ultimum, the damping-off organism of cucumber. This pathogen was antagonized, on thin films of water agar, by the three mycoparasites, and was moderately susceptible to P. periplocum while slightly susceptible to P. acanthicum and P. oligandrum. In direct application method in which antagonistic mycoparasites were incorporated into peat/sand mixture artificially infested with P. ultimum under growthroom conditions, Pythium oligandrum and P. periplocum (at 500 CFUg−1) significantly improved seedling emergence and protected seedlings from damping-off. In the seed coating method, biocontrol by two types of seed dressing (homogenate- or oospore coated seeds), was comparable to that achieved by direct application. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Studies on one of the protein rich pulses, horsegram (Dolichos biflorus L.) were carried out to know how far these low risk pulses are free from aflatoxin contamination under severe insect infestation in storage. A total of 150 stored seed samples of horsegram were analyzed for the presence of aflatoxins by collecting 25 samples each of undamaged and insect damaged seeds of all the three varieties (PDM-1, PHG-1 and HG-96). More than 33% of insect damaged seed samples were contaminated with aflatoxin B1 and B2, whereas less than 8% of the undamaged seed samples contain only low levels of aflatoxin B2. Higher levels of aflatoxin B1 (up to 130 μg/kg) were reported in insect damaged seed samples of all the three varieties under study. The levels of aflatoxin B2 were always lower than aflatoxin B1 of the corresponding seed samples with insect damage. Aflatoxin B1 was reported in both the undamaged and insect damaged seed samples of all the three varieties of horsegram. It is evident from the varietal response studies that PDM-1 and HG-96 varieties of horsegram are highly vulnerable to aflatoxin contamination whereas, PHG-1 variety is relatively less susceptible to it. In general, insect infestation leads to increase in fungal invasion (including aflatoxigenic fungi) and this further enhances the levels of aflatoxin contamination in horsegram seeds.  相似文献

Effects of population with different origin, biotype, seed size, temperature and depth of burial on the emergence of germinated seeds were investigated to assess the possibilities for successful management of triazine resistant populations of Solanum nigrum. Emergence fraction increased with temperature and decreased with increasing depth of placement. Emergence fraction appeared to be highest at intermediate seed weights. Resistant seeds showed a higher emergence fraction than susceptible seeds while emergence rate of resistant seeds was slightly lower. Emergence rate increased with increasing temperatures and decreasing depths. The possibilities for management of resistant S. nigrum with a stale seedbed preparation are discussed.  相似文献

Low soil temperatures and low water potentials reduce and delay the seed germination of canola (Brassica rapa L., B. napus L.) in western Canada. Germination is also very sensitive to the salinity effects of nitrogen fertiliser placed with the seed, especially when the seed bed is relatively dry. The effects of pre-hydration and re-drying treatment on canola (Brassica rapa L. cv. Tobin) seed germination and seedling emergence at 10°C subjected to either a water or salt stress were determined. Low water potentials, induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG 8000), low soil moisture, or high concentrations of salts, reduced both germination and seedling emergence, and increased the time to 50% germination and emergence of seeds at 10°C. At equal osmotic potentials, Na2SO4 was less inhibitory on low temperature germination than either NaCl or PEG, suggesting that the sulphate ion partially alleviated the inhibitory effects of low water potential. Solutions of NaCI produced more abnormal seedlings compared to Na2SO4, suggesting that NaCl was more toxic than Na2SO4 during seedling development. Pre-hydration and re-drying partially overcame the inhibitory effects of both low water potential and salts on seed germination and seedling emergence at 10°C. The seed treatment increased the germination rate in Petri dishes and seedling emergence from a sandy loam soil. Water potentials or soil water contents required to inhibit 50% germination or emergence at 10°C were lower for treated seeds compared to control seeds. Salt concentrations inhibiting 50% emergence were higher for treated seeds than control seeds. Neither treated nor control seeds produced seedlings which emerged if the soil water content was lower than 9% or when the soil was continuously irrigated with salt solutions of 100 mmol kg-1 of NaCl or 50 mmol kg-1 of Na2SO4. These results suggest that the pre-hydration and re-drying treatment did not lower the base water potentials at which seedling emergence could occur. Abnormal seedlings were observed in both treated and control seeds, particularly if the soil was watered with NaCl solutions; however, the seed treatment reduced the number of abnormal seedlings.  相似文献

Parsnip seeds from four years of seed production (1980–83) were used to examine the effects of position of the seed on the parent plant and several cultural factors on seed and embryo growth and seedling performance. Maximum seed dry weight was reached c. 50 days after flowering (DAF) but embryos continued to grow for a further 7–15 days. The coefficient of variation (C.V.) of seed weight fell from c. 35–40% at 40 DAF, to about 20–25% at maturity. The corresponding figures for C.V. of embryo length were 25–35% at the early harvest and 12–15% at maturity. The effects of seed position, plant density, harvest method, seed grading after harvest on seedling emergence and weight characters were small. Harvesting seeds c. 60 DAF gave, on average, 3.3 days earlier emergence, c. 3.6 days lower ‘spread’ of emergence time and c. 9% higher seedling emergence than harvesting 2 wk earlier. Late harvesting of the seed crop reduced the C.V. of seedling weight from 53 to 46%, on average, but there were variations in response from year to year. Seedling emergence and seedling weight characters were more closely related to embryo length than to seed weight characters.  相似文献

Myrmecochory or seed dispersal by ants is often described as a diffuse mutualism, because many of the ant species that function as partners are considered to be similar in terms of the frequency and consequences of their interactions. In this work, we test this assumption by conducting ant community surveys and seed removal experiments in six study sites located within a semi‐arid region of northwest Argentina. At each site, we characterized the ant assemblage that interacted with the seeds of Jatropha excisa Griseb. (Euphorbiaceae), an ant‐dispersed native shrub. Our results demonstrate that seed removal was dominated by one species, Pogonomyrmex cunicularius Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae), which was responsible of 84% of the observed seed removal events. Although several ant species were attracted to the elaiosome‐bearing seeds of J. excisa, seed removal did not depend on ant community composition (species richness and ant activity) but was significantly influenced by the abundance of P. cunicularius. Its physical, behavioral, and ecological attributes are common with other ant species that have been characterized as keystone seed dispersers in other regions of the world. Nest feeding with marked seeds revealed that once P. cunicularius ants consume the elaiosomes, seeds are left inside the nests undamaged and at an appropriate depth for emergence. Our results support the hypothesis that myrmecochory is often an unevenly diffuse mutualism (i.e., one partner species is particularly important) and that at a local scale P. cunicularius is the keystone seed disperser of J. excisa.  相似文献

High incidence of diseases associated with the use of seeds saved from previous harvests as desire of maintaining local varieties with special attributes is of increased concern in wheat industry worldwide. Prevalent of seed-borne fungi in farmer-saved seeds and seed dressing fungicides to prevent infection from seeds to seedlings was studied in Northern Tanzania. One hundred and thirty five untreated farmer-saved seed lots were collected randomly from farmers. Alternaria alternata, Bipolaris sorokiniana, Drechslera tritici, Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, Epicoccum purpurascens, Pyricularia oryzae and Penicillium corylophilum were fungi isolated in farmer-saved seeds. Mean seed infection was 29% causing average grain yield loss of 1.2 mt/ha?1. Seed dressing with Metalaxy plus (Methyl carboxaitide), Mancozeb (Manganase-zinc salt) and Baytan (Chlorophenoxy ethanol) increased seed germination by 14, 13 and 17%, respectively, and grain yield by 28, 20 and 18%, respectively. Farmer-saved seeds were heavily infected by fungi with low grain yield performance.  相似文献

Seeds of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) can exhibit seedcoat imposed dormancy, which produces hard seeds within a seed lot. These seeds do not germinate because they do not imbibe water due to a barrier to water entry in the seed coat. The aim of this work was to analyze the anatomical and chemical characteristics of the testa of alfalfa seeds with respect to water permeability levels. The anatomy of seeds of the cv. Baralfa 85 was studied and structural substances, polyphenols, tannins and cutin present in the testa of seeds of different water permeability levels were determined. The anatomical characteristics of the seed coat and the proportions of components were found to determine the permeability level of the seed coat, an aspect that is associated with the physical seed dormancy level. Anatomically, increased thickness of the testa was associated with a lower permeability level. The difference may be attributed to the variation in cuticle thickness, length of macrosclereids and thickness of the cell wall, and presence and development of osteosclereids. From the physiological and chemical points of view, the mechanism of physical dormancy of the testa is explained by a greater amount of components that repel water and cement the cell wall, such as polyphenols, lignins, condensed tannins, pectic substances, and a lower proportion of cellulose and hemicellulose.  相似文献

Abstract Recolonization patterns of a tall‐tussock grassland differ between low‐frequency and high‐intensity fires. A series of laboratory and field experiments were performed on the seed bank and on seeds of the main colonizing species (Carduus acanthoides, Cirsium vulgare, Lotus glaber) to determine and compare the effects of fire frequency and fire intensity on their recolonization potential. Seed‐bank size of colonizing species did not show a significant variation with contrasting fire frequencies, so overall interval‐dependent effects do not seem to affect their propagule pool at the time of fire. However, frequency of fire modified the proportion of viable seeds and their dormancy state according to species. Accumulated emergence from experimentally buried soft‐seeds of Lotus was lower after high‐intensity fires (following wind direction) than after back‐fires (against wind direction), but no significant effects of fire‐front direction on seedling emergence were observed for hard‐seeds of Lotus nor Carduus and Cirsium. Seedling emergence from buried seeds of Cirsium was increased with doubling fuel loads, particularly from deepen soil layers, where Cirsium had most of their viable seeds after a low frequency of fire. Emergence from hard‐seeds of Lotus was less promoted than Cirsium by doubling fuel loads, and according to analysis of excavated seedlings, it was completely inhibited from upper soil layers of the seed bank. Integration of species‐specific and burial depth‐specific responses of Cirsium and Lotus seeds according to fuel load, vertical distribution of the seed banks, seed dormant states and mean emergence depths, resulted in expected emergence values which agree with their previously observed patterns of recolonization. Thus, event‐dependent mechanisms had a better predictive value on recolonization success of the studied species than the observed cumulative effects of fire history on their seed‐bank size.  相似文献

In three experiments, using laboratory, glasshouse and field tests, seed dressings of benomyl-1½ (42.4 g) to 2 oz (56.6 g) Benlate 50% w.p. per 28 lb (12.7 kg) of seed-gave complete control of Ascochyta infection of pea seeds. Mixtures of benomyl and captan and benomyl and thiram were also effective. Carboxin, captan, and thiram used as seed dressings, either singly or in mixtures, did not eliminate the pathogen from peas. Germination, emergence and seedling vigour were not impaired by any dressing.  相似文献

Seed quality is a key critical component to produce well established and vigorous seedlings under cool soil (<10°C) conditions experienced in Western Canada. A simple, relatively quick germination assay is required to separate small differences in seed germination which can have a significant impact on seedling growth. It has long been established that phytohormones regulate seed germination: abscisic acid inhibits germination whereas gibberellins enhance germination. We investigated the effects of ABA, GA, ethylene and inhibitors of these phytohormones alone and in combination on the germination rate of a black and a yellow seed canola (Brassica napus) imbibed at 8°C. The effects of either saline solutions, osmotic solutions, fusicoccin or testa on the germination of canola seeds imbibed at 8°C were also investigated. This temperature is representative of the soil temperatures experienced in the early spring of Western Canada. The two canola seed lines, especially the yellow seed line, were very sensitive to increasing concentration of saline solutions at 8°C, but not at 23°C; however, iso-osmotic solutions that reduced water potential were more inhibitory. The seed coat (testa) including the endosperm was a major factor affecting the germination rate of the yellow seed line at 8°C, however, GA4+7 overcame the inhibitory effect of the testa, whereas ABA exacerbated it. Fusicoccin was more stimulatory to germination than GA4+7, however, unlike GA4+7, it was unable to overcome the inhibitory effect of paclobutrazol, a GA biosynthesis inhibitor. Fluridone, an ABA biosynthesis inhibitor, was unable to overcome the inhibitory effects of a saline solution suggesting that the inhibitory effect was not due to elevated ABA levels. Ethylene, a stimulator of germination did not appear to be involved in the germination of these two lines. Controlled deterioration at 35°C, 85% RH could be either partially or completely overcome by exogenous GA4+7. This study demonstrated the effect of hormones, salinity and testa on the germination of canola seeds under less than ideal environmental conditions.  相似文献

Dispersal syndromes are often defined by reference to fruit traits that are associated with distinct frugivore guilds. Studies rarely examine the relationship between seed traits and frugivores or test the alternative hypothesis that traits are shaped by climatic variables. We assess whether the evolution of seed size and physical defense are correlated with dispersal-related traits and climatic variables in Artabotrys, a fleshy-fruited tropical lineage. Diaspore traits and WorldClim bioclimatic variables were compiled for 43 species. Correlated evolution was evaluated using phylogenetic regression and model-fitting approaches. The best-fitting multioptima Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model suggests that lineages with smooth testa and thin pericarp (SP) have evolved toward smaller seeds with a thinner testa, whereas lineages with rough testa and/or thick pericarp have evolved toward larger seeds with a thicker testa. A smooth testa facilitates spitting and/or swallowing of intact seeds while fruits with thin pericarp may be preferentially consumed by frugivores with less destructive oral processing, enabling lower investment in seed physical defense in SP lineages. Moreover, small seeds are more likely to be swallowed intact with a food bolus. The effect of climate on seed size and physical defense is equivocal and warrants further investigation.  相似文献

Seasonal and small-scale spatial variation of the seed bank in an oligotrophic wet meadow (Molinion) was assessed by two methods: (1) direct determination of seeds extracted from soil samples (6 cm in diameter, 10 cm depth) and (2) germination of seeds according to Ter Heerdt et al. [1996. An improved method for seed bank analysis: seedling emergence after removing the soil by sieving. Funct. Ecol. 10, 144–151]. Samples were taken three times during the year (July and November 2001, March 2002) from three distinct microhabitats (moss layer, gaps, Molinia caerulea tussocks). Using the extraction method, more seeds were found in the upper 0–3 cm soil layer than in the deeper 3–7 cm layer, significant differences in the number of seeds were found among microhabitats (with the lowest seed bank densities in Molinia tussocks). The highest number of seeds was found in the spring census, but the test was not significant (P<0.10). However, seasonal variation was found when damaged seeds were included in the analysis. Changes in damaged/undamaged and light/heavy seed ratios, and in numbers of grass/herbs/sedges seeds are also discussed. The spatial distribution of seeds is probably influenced to a great degree by abiotic factors, such as microtopography (round and heavy seeds of sedges prevail in gaps and in deeper soil layers). The species composition of the seed bank varied among microhabitats, depth, and throughout the year. No differences were found by the seed germination method.  相似文献

Seed size and shape, seed coat surface pattern, seed coat thickness, and endosperm structure were investigated in Androsace septentrionalis, Cortusa matthioli, Hottonia palustris, Primula elatior, Soldanella carpatica (Primulaceae), Anagallis arvensis, A. minima, Cyclamen purpurascens, Glaux maritima, Lysimachia nemorum, L. vulgaris, Trientalis europaea (Myrsinaceae), and Samolus valerandi (Theophrastaceae). Three seed size categories were distinguished on the basis of biometric measurements. Almost all seeds examined were found to be small with an angular shape classified as sectoroid or polyhedral. A new type of seed shape, suboval, was identified for H. palustris. Cyclamen purpurascens seeds differed from seeds of all other species examined because of their large size, subglobose shape, and concave hilar area. Despite the different shape types, the length/width ratio of the seeds examined was constant, while their hilum length/width ratio was a highly variable feature. Three types of seed surface patterns were observed: (1) reticulate, (2) tuberculate with secondary striations, and (3) poroid-alveolate with the presence of a spongy outer layer. For seeds of Anagallis arvensis, A. minima, Cortusa matthioli, Lysimachia nemorum, and Soldanella carpatica, secondary seed sculpture was described. The seed coats of all species examined were two-layered, and great differences in testa thickness were found (9.9?C128.6???m). In general, seeds of the Myrsinaceae species were more often characterized by thick testa. Different proportions in thickness of the inner and outer testa layers were observed. In seeds with reticulate seed patterns, the inner testa layer was twice to several times thicker than the outer layer, while the opposite proportions were observed in seeds with the tuberculate or poroid-alveolate seed sculpture pattern. In seeds of all species examined, oxalate crystals were present on the surface of the inner testa layer. Thus, the presence or absence of oxalate crystals in testa is not a feature distinguishing species with angular or subglobose seeds. Four types of endosperm structure were identified according to the thickness of the endosperm cell walls and the relief of their inner surface: (1) with evenly thickened and smooth cell walls, (2) with evenly thickened cell walls and circular or helical thickenings on their inside surfaces, (3) with very thick, but not evenly thickened cell walls with constrictions (??pitted??), and (4) with very thin papery and undulate cell walls. There is no rule concerning the seed shape, type of the seed sculpture, testa thickness, or endosperm structure that corresponds to the family affiliation of the species examined.  相似文献

Yellow cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) seeds exhibit prolonged dormancy following their dispersal from the parent plant. Embryos excised fully from their enclosing seed tissues exhibit 100% germination, indicating that the seed tissues enclosing the embryo (the testa, remnants of the nucellus and the megagametophyte) play an inhibitory role and prevent radicle emergence. As part of an assessment of the role of seed tissues in the dormancy mechanism of yellow cedar seeds, light microscopy was used to examine changes within the major structures of the seed following a 90 d war (26C)/cold (4C) moist treatment ('stratification') and during germination. In the micropylar tip of the seed, the nucellus forms a hard nucellar cap covering the radicle. The nucellar cap is composed primarily of degenerated cells; histological staining with ruthenium red revealed a predominance of pectins. There were no obvious cellular or morphological differences (detected by light microscopy) between mature seeds subjected to a 3 d soak and seeds subjected to a 3 d soak and the 90 d dormancy-breaking treatment. However, just prior to germination there was an outward projection of the nucellar cap through the micropyle, which appeared to be caused by the extension of highly folded proteinaceous strands lying immediately in front of the radicle. When the testa was removed, the embryo enclosed within the intact megagametophyte was incapable of germination. If, however, the megagametophyte surrounding the embryo was slit or the embryo surrounded by an intact megagametophyte was subjected to a 3d rinse in water, some germination occurred, perhaps as a result of an enhanced release of inhibitors from the megagametophyte. After stratification, dormancy of yellow cedar seeds is broken; concurrent with dormancy breakage, there was a mechanical weakening of the megagametophyte. The embryo also underwent changes that included an increase in turgor and a reduced sensitivity to highly negative osmotic potential. It is concluded that coat-imposed dormancy of yellow cedar seeds is enforced by mechanical restraint of the megagametophyte as well as a leachable chemical inhibitor (most probably ABA).  相似文献
