The synthetic dye industry is traced from its inception in England in 1856 to the European Continent and finally to the United States. The primitive state of this industry in America prior to World War I is described as is the desperate effort to develop the neglected technology once imports were difficult to obtain. Topics include biological stains, formation of the Biological Stain Commission (BSC), pioneers in the industry, dye shortages after World War II, formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the decline of the domestic dye industry after the EPA was instituted, and the present state of the domestic dye industry.  相似文献

The article deals with the historical development of material use in the Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia/Czechoslovakia in 1855–2007. We calculate domestic material consumption (DMC), an indicator based on the concept of socio-economic metabolism and economy-wide material flow analysis, and relate it to various socio-economic factors such as changes in political regimes, industrialization and consequent growth in GDP and population. DMC is good at reflecting the gradual industrialization which took place up to the First World War, then the strong focus on the development of heavy industry under communist rule, and finally the swing to a more consumer industry and service-oriented economy after the fall of the communist regime and the subsequent transition from a centrally planned to a market economy. The comparable DMC figures per capita for Czechoslovakia and the United Kingdom prove that we arrived at feasible values of material consumption.  相似文献

Parasitic nematodes cause huge economic losses to the domestic livestock industry. Control requires skilled farm management and heavy use of anthelmintics, but breeding for resistant animals has long been held a possibility. For about 20 years after World War ll, the genetics of association between sheep breeds and Haemonchus contortus - the main parasite of importance in sheep - was studied in the USA and Europe. Since the early 1970s, however, such studies have received greater emphasis in Australia, where anthelmintic resistance has become widespread. In this article, Douglas Gray discusses the background to breeding programmes for resistance to hoemonchosis - paying homage to the 'Golden Ram', a Merino believed to have carried a single major gene for immunological resistance to Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus.  相似文献

The notion of a (socio‐) metabolic transition has been used to describe fundamental changes in socioeconomic energy and material use during industrialization. During the last century, Japan developed from a largely agrarian economy to one of the world's leading industrial nations. It is one of the few industrial countries that has experienced prolonged dematerialization and recently has adopted a rigorous resource policy. This article investigates changes in Japan's metabolism during industrialization on the basis of a material flow account for the period from 1878 to 2005. It presents annual data for material extraction, trade, and domestic consumption by major material group and explores the relations among population growth, economic development, and material (and energy) use. During the observed period, the size of Japan's metabolism grew by a factor of 40, and the share of mineral and fossil materials in domestic material consumption (DMC) grew to more than 90%. Much of the growth in the Japanese metabolism was based on imported materials and occurred in only 20 years after World War II (WWII), when Japan rapidly built up large stocks of built infrastructure, developed heavy industry, and adopted patterns of mass production and consumption. The surge in material use came to an abrupt halt with the first oil crisis, however. Material use stabilized, and the economy eventually began to dematerialize. Although gross domestic product (GDP) grew much faster than material use, improvements in material intensity are a relatively recent phenomenon. Japan emerges as a role model for the metabolic transition but is also exceptional in many ways.  相似文献

Abstract. To study whether an electrical potential difference exists across the nuclear envelope or inner nuclear membrane of plant cells, the authors have used an optical probe of membrane potential, the cationic fluorescent dye, DiOC6(3) (MW = 572.5). This dye was microinjected into the nucleoplasm of isolated Acetabularia nuclei (which are still surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm) and its subnuclear localization visualized by fluorescence microscopy. Striking differences, which seemed to be correlated with the developmental stage of the isolated nucleus, were observed. In nuclei isolated from cells at the stage of early cap stage formation, the dye was restricted to the nuclear envelope. In nuclei isolated from cells with intermediate or fully developed caps, there was increased nucleoplasmic staining, and the staining of the envelope was frequently diminished or abolished. In all nuclei, the dye remained within the nucleus after injection. Cytoplasmic staining was only observed when nuclei isolated from cells at the stage of early cap formation were incubated in a hyper- or hypo-tonic medium. Various ionophores, injected before the dye into the nucleoplasm, had no effect on the subsequent nuclear localization of DiOC6(3), although they did rapidly induce nucleolar condensation in nuclei isolated from cells at the stage of early cap formation. The results suggested that the electrical properties of Acetabularia nuclear envelopes or inner nuclear membranes change during cell maturation. Furthermore, the retention of the dye in the nucleoplasm under isotonic conditions indicated that the nuclear pores were not open channels for molecules of this size.  相似文献

A new design for an energy‐harvesting electrochromic window (EH‐ECW) based on the fusion of two technologies, organic electrochromic windows and dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), is presented. Unlike other power‐generating smart windows, such as photoelectrochromic devices that are passive and only contain two states (i.e., a closed‐circuit colored state and an open‐circuit bleaching state), EH‐ECW allows active tuning of the transmittance by varying the applied potential and it functions as a photovoltaic cell based on a DSSC. The resulting device demonstrates a fast switching rate of 1 s in both the bleaching and coloring processes through the use of an electrochromic polymer as a counter electrode layer. To increase the transmittance of the device, a cobalt redox couple and a light‐colored, yet efficient, organic dye are used. The organic dye contains a polymeric structure that contributes to the high cyclic stability. The device exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.5% (100 mW cm‐2) under AM 1.5 irradiation, a change in transmittance of 34% upon applied potential, and shows only 3% degradation in the PCE after 5000 cycles.  相似文献

The single Cys residue in the C-terminal domain of bovine eye lens alpha-crystallin was covalently labelled with 6-bromomethyl-2-(2-furanyl)-3-hydroxychromone. This novel SH-reactive two-band ratiometric fluorescent dye is characterized by excited state intramolecular proton transfer reaction yielding two highly emissive N* and T* bands separated by more than 100 nm. Their relative intensities are known to be highly sensitive to the H-bonding ability of the environment. Properties of the environment of the dye attached to the protein were studied under native-like conditions and at a range of elevated temperatures that are known to facilitate alpha-crystallin chaperone-like activity. We observe that on heating, the environment of the dye becomes more flexible and the H-bonding of the dye with the protein vicinity decreases. The spectroscopic properties observed on heating were partially restored after cooling, but the initial values were not reached on the time scale of our experiments (up to 3 h). This suggests that the changes of the dye microenvironment are connected with the rearrangements of alpha-crystallin quaternary structure. Since there is only one Cys residue in alphaA subunit of alpha-crystallin (whereas alphaB subunit contains no Cys), we attributed the observed temperature-induced changes of the dye's microenvironment to the particular site within alpha-crystallin molecule.  相似文献

Culling the Masses seeks to explain the shift in American immigration policy from one based on racial and ethnic selection to a more equitable and colorblind approach. The authors argue that international and foreign policy considerations led to a radical shift in policy after World War II. They succeed in debunking American exceptionalism, but in this critique I argue that more attention should be given to the interaction of international and domestic politics, using a ‘two-level game’ framework. The history of Malay nationalism traces a path from secular issues before World War II to religious issues in the post‐independence period. Before the War Malay nationalists were concerned with the encroachment upon their freedom by British colonialists and non‐Malay immigrants. The establishment of Malay political power after the War effected important economic changes, creating new class‐divisions in Malay society. These divisions provide a basis for the rise of Malay religious nationalism. The reactions of the non‐Malay population to these changes were expressed as non‐Muslim religious revivalisms. The role of the state in regulating religious movements through a process of ethnic rationalization cannot be understated.  相似文献

Among the many scientists who studied the cutaneous blood supply, Gino Pieri, an Italian Army surgeon operating during World War I, deserves attention. During those times, amputations were frequent, and flaps used to cover stumps were often inadequately designed and became necrotic, because of poor knowledge of the skin's blood supply. Pieri solved the problem after drawing a perforator map of human body skin, injecting the main arteries with methylene blue dye. His flaps were mainly designed along the course of what Ian Taylor would call "source" arteries, to capture the greatest perforators.  相似文献

This article compares the migration processes to, and the socio‐economic conditions of colonial Caribbean migrants in, the metropoles. Specifically, it discusses: 1) the formation of modern colonies in the Caribbean after World War II; 2) the differences between colonial Caribbean migrations and migrations from Caribbean nation‐states; 3) the different socio‐economic characteristics among Caribbean colonial migrants in the metropoles; and 4) the labour market incorporation and public policies affecting colonial Caribbean migrants in each metropolitan society. There are interesting differences among these Caribbean colonial migrants regarding the process of incorporation into the host society. This is related to the different development of the welfare state in each metropole and to the presence or absence of specific public policies addressing the peculiar socio‐economic conditions of these migrants.  相似文献

The feasibility of using immobilized fungi to decolorize textile industry wastewater containing dyes was examined in experiments with: two species of white‐rot fungi (a Marasmius species from Indonesia, which produces copious biomass, and Trametes hirsuta, which produces high levels of laccase); two types of lignite products as adsorbents and solid substrates (lignitic xylite and lignite granules); and four simulated wastewaters, each containing a different kinds of reactive textile azo dye. The growth, extracellular enzyme production, dye degradation and dye absorption parameters afforded by each permutation of fungus, substrate and dye were then measured. Both fungal species grew poorly on xylite, but much better on lignite granules. Marasmius sp. produced up to 67 U/L laccase on lignite granules, but just 10 U/L on xylite, and no other detectable extracellular enzymes. T. hirsuta produced 1343 U/L laccase and up to 12 U/L unspecific peroxidase when immobilized on lignite granules, and 898 U/L laccase with 14 U/L unspecific peroxidase when immobilized on xylite. The amount of color lost from the dye solutions depended on both the type of dye and the enzyme levels in the fermenter.  相似文献

Tau fibrillization is a potential therapeutic target for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Several small-molecule inhibitors of tau aggregation have been developed for this purpose. One of them, 3,3'-bis(beta-hydroxyethyl)-9-ethyl-5,5'-dimethoxythiacarbocyanine iodide (N744), is a cationic thiacarbocyanine dye that inhibits recombinant tau filament formation when present at submicromolar concentrations. To prepare dosing regimens for testing N744 activity in biological models, its full concentration-effect relationship in the range 0.01-60muM was examined in vitro by electron microscopy and laser light scattering methods. Results revealed that N744 concentration dependence was biphasic, with fibrillization inhibitory activity appearing at submicromolar concentration, but with relief of inhibition and increases in fibrillization apparent above 10muM. Therefore, fibrillization was inhibited 50% only over a narrow concentration range, which was further reduced by filament stabilizing modifications such as tau pseudophosphorylation. N744 inhibitory activity also was paralleled by changes in its aggregation state, with dimer predominating at inhibitory concentrations and large dye aggregates appearing at high concentrations. Ligand dimerization was promoted by the presence of tau protein, which lowered the equilibrium dissociation constant for dimerization more than an order of magnitude relative to controls. The results suggest that ligand aggregation may play an important role in both inhibitory and disinhibitory phases of the concentration-effect curve, and may lead to complex dose-response relationships in model systems.  相似文献

Abstract

Methyl orange, a sulfonated azo dye having various industrial applications was decolorized by three bacteria Bacillus sp. strain AK1, Lysinibacillus sp. strain AK2 and Kerstersia sp. strain VKY1. The effect of various factors such as dye concentration, pH, temperature and NaCl concentration on decolorization was investigated. At 200?mg/L methyl orange concentration, the strains AK1, AK2 and VKY1 exhibited maximum decolorizing potential of 93, 95 and 96%, respectively, at temperature 35?°C and pH 7.0 within 18?h of incubation. These strains decolorized the dye over a wide range of pH (5–10), temperature (15–55?°C), and NaCl concentration (5–20?g/L). Further, these strains decolorize up to 800?mg/L concentrations of methyl orange within 24?h. The dye decolorization efficiency was further increased by using different consortia of these three strains which could decolorize the dye completely within 12?h of incubation. The cell-free extracts of the strains AK1, AK2 and VKY1 grown on methyl orange exhibited the azoreductase activity of 0.4794, 1.56 and 1.01?µM/min/mg protein, respectively. HPLC and FTIR analysis of the dye decolorized sample indicated the formation of 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine as breakdown products of azo bond. The high decolorization potential of these bacterial strains individually and in consortia has potential application in remediation of dye effluent.  相似文献

We investigated the formation and pharmacology of prostaglandin E(3) (PGE(3)) derived from fish oil eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in human lung cancer A549 cells. Exposure of A549 cells to EPA resulted in the rapid formation and export of PGE(3.) The extracellular ratio of PGE(3) to PGE(2) increased from 0.08 in control cells to 0.8 in cells exposed to EPA within 48 h. Incubation of EPA with cloned ovine or human recombinant cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) resulted in 13- and 18-fold greater formation of PGE(3), respectively, than that produced by COX-1. Exposure of A549 cells to 1 microM PGE(3) inhibited cell proliferation by 37.1% (P < 0.05). Exposure of normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells to PGE(3), however, had no effect. When A549 cells were exposed to EPA (25 microM) or a combination of EPA and celecoxib (a selective COX-2 inhibitor), the inhibitory effect of EPA on the growth of A549 cells was reversed by the presence of celecoxib (at both 5 and 10 microM). This effect appears to be associated with a 50% reduction of PGE(3) formation in cells treated with a combination of EPA and celecoxib compared with cells exposed to EPA alone. These data indicate that exposure of lung cancer cells to EPA results in a decrease in the COX-2-mediated formation of PGE(2), an increase in the level of PGE(3), and PGE(3)-mediated inhibition of tumor cell proliferation.  相似文献

Textile industry uses azo dyes in its processes, which are complex organic molecules that are not easy to be degraded. Reactive dyes are especially difficult to remove from wastewater because of the characteristics of the molecule: one or more azo bonds, naphthalene‐disulfonate, triazine or chloro‐triazine, and phenyl‐amine groups. The degradation of the azo dye reactive red 272 was studied under anaerobic conditions in a hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed reactor (UASB) with an activated carbon bed. An adapted consortium of microorganisms was used in the kinetic study (batch) and to inoculate the UASB reactor. The experimental design identified the main factors determining the dye reduction efficiency are the initial concentration of dye and dextrose (as electron donor) and the residence time in the reactor. Dye reduction rate was decreased as the concentration increases in the wastewater; as a result, a kinetic model with a change from first to second order is proposed. The kinetic study showed that the process is first abiotic (adsorption) and then biotic (biodegradation).  相似文献

The rare incidence of cardiovascular disease in Eskimos has been ascribed to their diet rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) and hence a possible formation of trienoic prostanoids. In this study we compare endogenous formation of prostacyclin (PGI), which is formed by the endothelial cell, and thromboxane (TXA), which is formed by platelets in 20 Eskimos and 20 age and sex matched Danish controls by measurement of the main urinary metabolites. Considerable formation of bioactive PGI3 from dietary EPA was shown in Eskimos, which was barely detectable in the controls. Furthermore synthesis of PGI2 was significantly higher in Eskimos in spite of a markedly lower arachidonate content in membrane lipids. In contrast formation of TXA2,3 was lower in Eskimos as compared to the Danish controls. We conclude, that the balance between pGI and TXA, which may regulate the interaction of platelet and vessel wall, is favourably shifted in Greenland Eskimos to an antithrombotic state.  相似文献

Bacterial production of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) is a promising biotechnological approach for the mass production of these valuable compounds, but extensive screening is currently needed to select a strain that meets industrial requirements.A method was developed for the rapid screening and isolation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-producing marine bacteria from mixed cultures using the dye 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC). The method was first validated using two bacteria from the Shewanella genus, S. gelidimarina (known to contain EPA) and S. fidelis (known not to contain EPA), and subsequently applied to a range of bacterial samples collected from seven randomly selected New Zealand fish species.By incorporating TTC in both solid and liquid state fermentation treatments, a clear association between the reduction of TTC to the red-coloured triphenyl formazan (TF) and the presence of EPA within Gram-negative bacteria was confirmed. Incubation in 0.1% w/v TTC was optimal for colour response and cell growth in agar plates and liquid cultures. Bacteria that produce EPA reduced TTC to TF, but a number of non-EPA-producing bacteria also showed this capacity. By conducting a subsequent Gram staining, all EPA-producing strains were revealed to be G (−) rod bacteria while the non-producing ones were all G (+) cocci. The fatty acid methyl esters of the isolated bacteria that reduced TTC to TF were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the content of EPA was confirmed by gas chromatography.From a pool of 2.0 × 108 CFU/ml, this method allowed the rapid isolation of 16 bacteria capable of producing EPA. This new approach significantly reduces the number of samples submitted for GC analysis and therefore the time, effort and cost of screening and isolating strains of EPA-producing marine bacteria.  相似文献

The fields of behavioral physiology and sociobiology enjoyed spectacular success in post World War II Germany. One of the major contributors to this blossoming in behavioral science was Martin Lindauer, who furthered the research approach of his mentor (Karl von Frisch), made numerous seminal discoveries, and nurtured a strong next generation in the area of neurobiology and behavior. We review the scientific development of Martin Lindauer within the German academic system in the years surrounding World War II, examine his research approach and achievements, and discuss his unusually successful methods of scientific pedagogy.  相似文献
