Pollen — ovule ratios and percentages of stigmatic pollen germination (SPG) were measured for over 160 taxa of thePolemoniaceae. When related to taxa with known breeding systems, it is found that low SPGs and high P:O ratios characterize xenogamous plants, high SPGs and low P:Os characterize autogamous plants. There is a significant negative correlation between P:O ratio and SPG in the whole family as well as in certain genera. Both measures can serve as reliable indicators of the breeding systems in taxa of thePolemoniaceae and can be measured in dried or living specimens. Accordingly, most polemons feature mixed breeding system, i.e. facultative xenogamy or facultative autogamy. Xenogamy is common among the tropical genera and in theLeptodactylon, Phlox andPolemonium. Autogamy is more frequent in the tribeGilieae (particularly inGilia) than in the other tribes. Annual taxa tend to be autogamous, showing on the average higher SPG and lower P:O ratio. The lepidopteran-pollinated group of species have a higher mean P:O ratio and lower mean SPG thus indicating that such plants are associated with crosspollination more than the others.  相似文献

The evolution of dry stigmas has been accompanied by the development — in the pollen — of mechanisms for accessing water from the stigmatic epidermis. Development of self- and cross-pollen on the stigmatic surface has been examined in Brassica oleracea, focusing on the hydration of the grains. Unlike self-compatible (SC) Arabidopsis thaliana, pollen hydration of self-incompatible (SI) Brassica oleracea is preceded by a latent period of between 30–90 min, which is significantly shortened by inhibition of protein synthesis in the stigma. Physiological experiments, some with isolated pollen coatings, indicate that during the latent period signals passing from the pollen to the sigma are responsible for readying the stigmatic surface for penetration and — after self-pollination — activation of the SI system. The changes at the stigma surface include the expansion of the outer layer of the cell wall beneath the grain. This expansion does not occur following self-pollination, when coating-derived signals stimulate a stigmatic response which interrupts hydration and arrests grain development. Cell manipulation studies suggest that self grains are not inhibited metabolically, but are physiologically isolated from the subjacent stigmatic papilla. This focusing of the SI response at the pollen-stigma interface ensures that a single papilla can simultaneously accept cross-pollen and reject self-grains. The evolution of this highly efficient SI system is disussed in the perspective of pathogen-defence mechanisms known also to be located in epidermal cells.  相似文献

Floral visitors vary in their pollination efficiency and their preferences for floral traits. If low-efficiency pollinators decrease the amount of pollen available to higher efficiency visitors, then low-efficiency visitors may actually have negative fitness consequences for the plants that they visit. We used experimental arrays in two populations to determine the floral preferences and the fitness effects of low-efficiency (or ugly) pollinators on Campanula americana. These ugly pollinators (halictid bees) preferentially visited flowers with pollen over flowers that had had their pollen removed. C. americana pollen color varies quantitatively from light tan to dark purple, and we found that natural variation in pollen color influenced the magnitude of halictid preferences for flowers with pollen. In general, preferences for flowers with pollen were stronger when the ugly pollinators foraged in arrays of flowers with tan-colored pollen than in arrays with purple-colored pollen. When plants received few visits by efficient Bombus pollinators, visits by ugly pollinators significantly decreased siring success relative to plants where visits by ugly pollinators were prevented. In contrast, ugly pollinators did not influence siring success when higher efficiency pollinators were more abundant. Thus, the relationship between low-efficiency pollinators and the plants that they visit varies from commensalistic to antagonistic depending on the presence of other pollinators in the community. Our findings suggest that the negative fitness effects and floral preferences of low-efficiency or ugly pollinators may contribute to the maintenance of a pollen color polymorphism in C. americana.  相似文献

Hepatica americana is one of the earliest flowering vernal herbs in the deciduous forests of piedmont North Carolina. Unlike most other members of the spring wildflower community, its flowers are nectarless and autogamous. The number of insect visits a flower receives varies markedly through the blooming season and is lowest when H. americana is in full bloom. Potential for outcrossing as measured by the seed set of emasculated flowers follows the same pattern. The mid-season decline in insect-pollination is most likely the result of competition with Erythronium umbilicatum, which flowers concurrently with H. americana and is much more attractive to the solitary bees that are the principal early season pollen vectors. Because of this competitive disadvantage, seed set of H. americana in piedmont North Carolina would be pollination-limited if the flowers were not autogamous. Autogamy may also be favored by flowering early in the spring before pollinators are available. Opportunities for outcrossing in H. americana are primarily the result of protogyny and blooming earlier than competitors.  相似文献

Summary Visible light and UV epifluorescence microscopy were used to assess self-incompatibility (SI) in Zinnia angustifolia clones. Pistils were fixed 24 h after pollination and stained either with aniline blue in lactophenol (visible light microscopy) or decolorized aniline blue (fluorescence microscopy). Percentage of florets with embryos 21 days following pollination (% embryo set) was used as a control. Embryo set following self- or incompatible cross-pollinations ranged from 0% to 9.9%, whereas compatible crosses yielded 55.5%–87.1% embryo set. Observations using visible light microscopy indicated pollen load and number of germinated grains were significantly higher for compatible compared to incompatible crosses, and both variables were positively correlated (r = 0.89–0.96) to % embryo set. Examinations with UV epifluorescence microscopy revealed pollen load was higher and little or no callose accumulated in stigmatic papillae following compatible crosses, whereas for incompatible crosses, pollen load was low and callose lenticules were deposited in stigmatic papillae; the correlation between pollen load and % embryo set was 0.89. The intensity of callose fluorescence of the pollen tube-papillae attachment sites was quantitatively measured via micro spectrofluorometry. Callose fluorescence intensity ranged from 47.9% to 62.6% for incompatible and from 6.4% to 9.9% for compatible crosses, and was negatively correlated (r= — 0.95) with % embryo set. Microscopal techniques permit rapid assessment of SI and may be used routinely when each observed or measured parameter is highly correlated to the incompatibility response.Publication no. 2898 of the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

The primary pollinator of Polynesian heliconias,Heliconia laufao andH. paka, is the Wattled Honeyeater,Foulehaio carunculata. This report is the first documentation of pollination by honeyeaters in the genusHeliconia and the first record ofF. carunculata as a pollinator of a plant species. The Polynesian heliconias bear inflorescences that produce 2–4 hermaphroditic flowers per day for a period of 2–3 months. Each flower secretes abundant nectar (125–184 l) with low sugar concentration (15–18% sucrose-equivalents, weight per weight basis) which is available at anthesis just before dawn. Ninety percent of flower visits occur between anthesis and mid-morning. The honeyeaters perch on inflorescence bracts, and probing of the flower results in pollen deposition on the head and bill from where pollen is transferred between flowers. No statements on compatibility can be made forHeliconia paka; however,Heliconia laufao appears to be self-compatible. Calculations of energetic values of nectar of the Polynesian heliconias and Daily Energy Expenditures ofF. carunculata suggest that populations ofH. laufao andH. paka serve as rich energy resources for their pollinators.  相似文献

We compared breeding systems, inbreeding depression, and pollination limitation between two populations of Kalmia latifolia in Virginia and Rhode Island. Plants were autogamous in Virginia but not Rhode Island. Although autogamy with selling is hypothesized to reduce levels of inbreeding depression, both populations showed similarly high inbreeding depression manifested as reduced fruit set. Autogamy may be uncorrelated with selling rate because autogamy is not obligate and because geitonogamy is likely. Autogamy in the Virginia population seems most likely to have evolved for reproductive assurance under competition for pollinator service. Fruit set was pollination limited in the Virginia population apparently because bumblebee pollinators were more attracted to a coflowering species, Vaccinium erythrocarpum.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Delayed selfing is the predominant mode of autonomous self-pollination in flowering plants. However, few delayed selfing mechanisms have been documented. This research aims to explore a new delayed selfing mechanism induced by stigmatic fluid in Roscoea debilis, a small perennial ginger.

Methods

Floral biology and flower visitors were surveyed. The capacity of autonomous selfing was evaluated by pollinator exclusion. The timing of autonomous selfing was estimated by emasculation at different flowering stages. The number of seeds produced from insect-pollination was assessed by emasculation and exposure to pollinators in the natural population. The breeding system was also tested by pollination manipulations.

Key Results

Autonomous self-pollination occurred after flowers wilted. The stigmatic fluid formed a globule on the stigma on the third day of flowering. The enlarged globule seeped into the nearby pollen grains on the fourth flowering day, thus inducing pollen germination. Pollen tubes then elongated and penetrated the stigma. Hand-selfed flowers produced as many seeds as hand-crossed flowers. There was no significant difference in seed production between pollinator-excluded flowers and hand-selfed flowers. When emasculated flowers were exposed to pollinators, they produced significantly fewer seeds than intact flowers. Visits by effective pollinators were rare.

Conclusions

This study describes a new form of delayed autonomous self-pollination. As the predominant mechanism of sexual reproduction in R. debilis, delayed self-pollination ensures reproduction when pollinators are scarce.  相似文献

Individual flowers ofMoraea inclinata are nectariferous and last about six hours. They appear to be pollinated largely by bees in the familyHalictidae (Lasioglossum spp.,Nomia spp.,Zonalictus) and to a lesser extent by bees in the familyAnthophoridae (Amegilla). The mechanism of bee-pollination inM. inclinata is the Iris type; i.e., each flower consists of three pollination units (an outer tepal, a partly exserted anther, and the opposed style branch which terminates in a pair of petal-like crests). Bees rarely visit more than one pollination unit per flower. Transferral of pollen to the bee is passive and nototribic although all bees collected on the flowers were female and 55% of the bees carried pollen loads with 2–5 pollen taxa in their scopae.Moraea brevistyla flowers are nectariferous but lack scent and last two days. They are visited infrequently by bees and only one femaleLasioglossum spec. carried the pollen ofM. brevistyla. Unlike flowers ofM. inclinata those ofM. brevistyla deposit pollen only on the head and thorax. Bee-mediated autogamy in both species is avoided due to the erratic foraging patterns of the bees and the flexibility of each stigma lobe as the bee backs out of the flower. Approximately 2–4 flowers in the inflorescences of both species (6–8 flowers/infloresence) develop into capsules.  相似文献

In direct contrast to mostHibbertia spp., the flowers ofH. fasciculata R. Br. ex D. C. bear only a single whorl of stamens and these stamens are arranged separately (not in typical bundles). The short filaments are appressed to the three carpels so that the inflated, porose and introrsive anthers form a centralized cluster obscuring the three ovaries. The three slender styles emerge at right angles from between the filaments. These styles curve upward and the stigmas form the three points of a triangle; each stigma is approximately one millimeter outside the centralized cluster of anthers. The flowers are nectarless and bear a bright yellow corolla. A pungent and unpleasant fragrance appears to be concentrated within the pollenkitt. When native bees attempt to forage for the pollen, within the cluster of anthers, the ventrally deposited loads of pollen, on the bees' abdomens, contact the outer triangle of stigmas. The major pollinators ofH. fasciculata are female bees in the polylectic genera,Lasioglossum (subgenusChilalictus, Halictidae) andLeioproctus (Colletidae). These bees carry an average of more than two pollen taxa when they are caught foraging onH. fasciculata. 78% of the 47 bees, captured onH. fasciculata carried the pollen from at least one sympatric taxon bearing nectariferous flowers (e.g., genera in theMyrtaceae, Compositae, andEpacridaceae). The pollination biology ofH. fasciculata is assessed in relation to the known radiation of bee-pollinated flowers in the genusHibbertia, and within theDilleniaceae s. l.  相似文献

Summary The bacteriophage 3 origin of complementary strand DNA synthesis (—ori) contains two potential secondary loop structures (I and II), which have been implicated as direct recognition sites for host Escherichia coli DnaG protein. To elucidate to what extent such structures are essential, we introduced a nucleotide deletion within the —ori region, by nuclease digestion of 3 replicative form DNA. A mutant, delB, thus constructed had a 121 nucleotide deletion within the —ori region and was completely lacking in the two putative hairpin loops, I and II. The delB mutant formed smaller plaques on the host E. coli C and had a longer latent period, but the mean burst size at 37° C was almost the same (400 phages) as that of the wild type. In contrast to the parental phage, growth of the mutant depends on host dnaB and dnaC functions. These results indicate that the prototype secondary structures in the 3 origin of complementary strand synthesis are dispensable for delB and that the 3 mutant has an additional replication origin whose function is dependent on DnaB and DnaC proteins, rather than on DnaG protein alone.  相似文献

The airborne pollen concentration of the four mostfrequent and most allergenic taxa in Poland; Alnus, Betula, Poaceae, and Artemisia atPozna in the years 1995–1996 has been analyzed, using a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap. Theappearance of the earliest pollen producing taxa wasobserved as early as January and February, which isrelevant information for people subject to allergiesin the Pozna region, where Spring usually beginsin March. The periods of high and very high pollenconcentration of individual taxa have been comparedfor the two years.  相似文献

We have evaluated the expression of the reporter -glucuronidase (GUS) gene driven by the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S (CaMV 35S) promoter in flowers and pollen from 14 independent transgenic strawberry lines. Of the 14 lines evaluated, 13 (92.8%) showed GUS activity—as estimated by the histochemical GUS assay—in some floral organs, with expression being most common in the flower stem, sepals, petals, ovary and stigma. Ten of these thirteen transgenic lines (77%) showed GUS activity in pollen, although the percentages of positive pollen per flower varied greatly among the different lines. A study of the GUS expression during pollen maturation showed that the (CaMV 35S) promoter showed low expression in pollen from flower buds before anthesis but was activated in mature pollen following anther dehiscence. The percentages of pollen grains that showed GUS activity ranged from 2.1% to 46.3%. These percentages were similar or even higher when mature pollen was stored dry at room temperature for 2 weeks. After 5 weeks of storage, the percentages of GUS-positive pollen decreased in two of the six lines analysed but remained at similar values in the other four lines. GUS activity was also measured in protein extracts of mature pollen by means of the fluorometric GUS assay, with the values obtained ranging from 3.8 mol MU mg protein–1 h–1 to 0.26 mol MU mg protein–1 h–1. Contrary to the generally held view that the CaMV 35S promoter is virtually silent in pollen, we conclude that it is highly expressed in transgenic strawberry pollen.Abbreviations CaMV 35S Cauliflower mosaic virus promoter - GUS -Glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31) - MU 4-Methyl umbelliferone - nos Nopaline synthase promoter - nptII Neomycin phosphotransferase - X-Gluc 5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl--d-glucuronic acid  相似文献

In many species with animal-pollinated flowers, pollen arrives on the stigma in pulses and late-arriving pollen may be precluded from fertilizing ovules. When seed set per fruit is not pollen limited, the fate of pollen from later cohorts is affected by the time between pollinator visits, variation in pollen tube growth rates, and the amounts of pollen deposited relative to the availability of stigmatic area and unfertilized ovules. In a natural population of Hibiscus moscheutos, we found that consecutive pollinator visits to individual flowers occurred within 15 min of each other in more than half of our observations. We then conducted hand-pollination experiments using equal doses of early and late pollen bearing unique allozyme markers for paternity analysis (each dose was more than sufficient to result in full seed set). When pollen was applied 15 or 30 min after an earlier pollen load, the proportions of seeds sired by late-arriving pollen were reduced by 13–30% and 21–57%, respecitively. A few pollen-tubes from the late pollen load sired seeds even when a large dose of pollen was applied 1–2 h earlier, suggesting that the performance of pollen grains within each cohort was highly variable. The advantage of arriving early was greater when the first pollen load was applied at 0930 hours as compared with 1130 hours. We found no effect of previous pollination on the growth rates of late-arriving pollen-tubes. Taken together, these results demonstrate that pollen from later visits can compete with pollen from earlier visits, but the success of late-arriving pollen typically declines to very low levels after an interval of about 2 h. Given that surplus pollen often arrives on stigmas by mid-morning, we conclude that male reproductive success is more likely to be affected by the timing of pollen dispersal and pollen-tube competitive ability than by the total amount of pollen that is exported from flowers.  相似文献

Calotropis procera (Asclepiadaceae) grows in Israel under extremely hot climatic conditions. Flower morphology is adapted towards the concealment of nectar, in order to protect it against robbery by ants and from evaporation. Pollinia while being inserted within the stigmatic chamber, are soaked in the liquid nectar which, by its concentration controls pollen germination. Two Carpenter bees (Xylocopa) are the only pollinators and their behavior on flowers is discussed.  相似文献

The pollen fertility and seed formation of six species of theOrnithogalum umbellatum/angustifolium complex and of seven related species were studied. Four types of pollen grains could be recognized. The pollen fertility varied greatly in this complex and is not related to the ploidy level. The seed formation ofO. umbellatum showed an adaptation to a subcontinental-Mediterranean climate, that ofO. angustifolium to an Atlantic climate. In both cases raindrops seem to be important for pollination, in view of the absence of insect pollinators. After open pollination 113 seedlings were obtained in four species. Their chromosome numbers were determined. Nearly all the cultivated seedlings were aneuploid, which points to a positive selection of euploids in nature, because aneuploid individuals are rare in the wild.Biosystematic Studies on theOrnithogalum umbellatum/angustifolium Complex III.—Previous parts of this series are Part I: Taxonomy. From field observations onDrimys brasiliensis, principally in the Botucatu region of São Paulo State, Brazil, new data on the reproductive biology, the rhythm of growth, and the development of lateral cymose inflorescences, flowers and fruits are presented. Pollination accelerates the rate of flower-development for about 4–6 days. Pollination experiments show thatD. brasiliensis is not self-sterile; because of mechanical devices the sticky pollen grains do not normally come into contact with the stigmata unless an animal pollen vector is involved. The pollinators are diurnalColeoptera, Diptera andThysanoptera which eat from the pollen, lick from the stigmatic exudates and (in case of the flies) probably also from the staminal glands. Fruit- and seedeaters are birds which seem to be the main dispersal agents. Establishment of new individuals normally is through seedlings, but also by vegetative propagation through plagiotropous branches which may root and separate from the mother plant. The morphological, developmental and reproductive aspects inD. brasiliensis are discussed in a wider context, compared with data from otherMagnoliidae, and related to aspects of early Angiosperm evolution.  相似文献

Pollinator and/or mate scarcity affects pollen transfer, with important ecological and evolutionary consequences for plant reproduction. However, the way in which the pollen loads transported by pollinators and deposited on stigmas are affected by pollination context has been little studied. We investigated the impacts of plant mate and visiting insect availabilities on pollen transport and receipt in a mass‐flowering and facultative autogamous shrub (Rhododendron ferrugineum). First, we recorded insect visits to R. ferrugineum in plant patches of diverse densities and sizes. Second, we analyzed the pollen loads transported by R. ferrugineum pollinators and deposited on stigmas of emasculated and intact flowers, in the same patches. Overall, pollinators (bumblebees) transported much larger pollen loads than the ones found on stigmas, and the pollen deposited on stigmas included a high proportion of conspecific pollen. However, comparing pollen loads of emasculated and intact flowers indicated that pollinators contributed only half the conspecific pollen present on the stigma. At low plant density, we found the highest visitation rate and the lowest proportion of conspecific pollen transported and deposited by pollinators. By contrast, at higher plant density and lower visitation rate, pollinators deposited larger proportion of conspecific pollen, although still far from sufficient to ensure that all the ovules were fertilized. Finally, self‐pollen completely buffered the detrimental effects on pollination of patch fragmentation and pollinator failure. Our results indicate that pollen loads from pollinators and emasculated flowers should be quantified for an accurate understanding of the relative impacts of pollinator and mate limitation on pollen transfer in facultative autogamous species.  相似文献

The pollination ofVigna vexillata (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) by a carpenter bee,Xylocopa gualanensis (Hymenoptera-Anthophoridae) was studied in a secondary vegetation in Costa Rica. The bees were observed foraging onV. vexillata only in early mornings. Visits on individual flowers lasted about 7–8 seconds. Flower—pollen vector interactions are described and illustrated. By its pressure on the left-hand wing- and keel-petal in the asymmetrical flower, the weight of the bee causes the upper bearded part of the style along with the upper free parts of the stamens to slip out of the rigid keel-beak, hugging the bee over the dorsal part of its head and thorax. The occurrence of nototribic pollination inVigna and related genera is discussed.  相似文献

The family Malpighiaceae, particularly in the Neotropic, shows a similar floral morphology. Although floral attraction and rewards to pollinators are alike, stigmas and styles show more diversity. The stigmas were described covered with a thin and impermeable cuticle that needs to be ruptured by the mechanical action of the pollinators. However, this characteristic was only mentioned for a few species and the anatomy and ultrastructure of the stigmas were not explored. In this work, we analyze the morphology, anatomy, and ultrastructure of the stigma and style of Callaeum psilophyllum. Moreover, we identify the potential pollinators in order to evaluate how the disposition of the stigmas is related with their size and its role in the exposure of the receptive stigmatic surface. Our observations indicate that Centris flavifrons, C. fuscata, C. tarsata, and C. trigonoides are probably efficient pollinators of C. psilophyllum. The three stigmas are covered by a cuticle that remained intact in bagged flowers. The flowers exposed to visitors show the cuticle broken, more secretion in the intercellular spaces between sub-stigmatic cells and abundant electron-dense components inside vacuoles in stigmatic papillae. This indicates that the stigmas prepares in similar ways to receive pollen grains, but the pollinator action is required to break the cuticle, and once pollen tubes start growing, stigmatic and sub-stigmatic cells release more secretion by a granulocrine process.  相似文献
