The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the legitimacy of using a single measure or a small set of measures of strength to characterize an individual's overall strength. Briefly, the methods involved: (a) a search of electronic databases, article reference lists, and personal files to identify relevant literature; and (b) a summarizing of that literature. As a result of the searches, 25 relevant articles were identified. The articles reported correlation coefficients, Cronbach's alpha, and factor analysis. Together, these statistics suggest a tendency for different strength measures to be related. A close examination of the relationships, however, suggests that caution should be exercised in characterizing overall strength using a single measure such as grip strength. In conclusion, it may be legitimate to use one or several measures obtained from a single limb to characterize the strength of that limb but not the entire body. What this means practically is that the practitioner interested in characterizing strength of a limb can reduce test burden by testing a limited number of muscle actions of that limb.  相似文献

Correlations between primary production and patterns of nutrient use and nutrient availability were investigated in 18 plots in closed holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) stands in the Montseny mountains (NE Spain), searching for evidence of nutrient limitation on primary production. The plots spanned a range of altitudes and slope aspects within a catchment. Nutrients considered were nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) in plant samples, and the above plus calcium (Ca) and sodium (Na) in the soil. Primary production was found by summing the annual aboveground biomass increment to the annual litterfall. Across plots, primary production was correlated with the annual return of nutrients in litterfall, but this relationship probably arose from the common effects of the amount of litterfall on both primary production and nutrient return, and not from any nutrient limitation. Primary production was not significantly correlated with nutrient concentrations in mature leaves nor leaf litterfall, nor with absolute or relative foliar retranslocation of nutrients before leaf abscission, nor with the concentration and content (kg/ha) of total N, extractable P, and exchangeable K, Mg, Ca and Na in the upper mineral soil. We conclude that there is no correlational evidence that primary production is nutrient limited in this holm oak forest.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of variation in body size and growth rate on age of smolting in Atlantic salmon and brown trout in four different Norwegian rivers. In Atlantic salmon smolt ages varied between 2 and 6 years, and in brown trout between 2 and 7 years. Smolt age was negatively correlated with parr growth, and positively correlated with smolt size. Age at smolting was more variable in the two northern than the two southern rivers. Smolt sizes and ages were also more variable in brown trout than in Atlantic salmon. Based on the observed variation in smolt size and age, we reject the hypothesis that a threshold size alone regulates age at smolting. Within populations smolt age depends on growth rate so that fast-growing parr smolted younger and smaller than slow-growing parr. We hypothesize that smolt size and age is a trade-off between expected benefits and costs imposed by differences in individual growth rate.  相似文献

A soil–plant–atmosphere model was used to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) of a tropical savanna in Australia. This paper describes model modifications required to simulate the substantial C4 grass understory together with C3 trees. The model was further improved to include a seasonal distribution of leaf area and foliar nitrogen through 10 canopy layers. Model outputs were compared with a 5‐year eddy covariance dataset. Adding the C4 photosynthesis component improved the model efficiency and root‐mean‐squared error (RMSE) for total ecosystem GPP by better emulating annual peaks and troughs in GPP across wet and dry seasons. The C4 photosynthesis component had minimal impact on modelled values of ET. Outputs of GPP from the modified model agreed well with measured values, explaining between 79% and 90% of the variance and having a low RMSE (0.003–0.281 g C m?2 day?1). Approximately, 40% of total annual GPP was contributed by C4 grasses. Total (trees and grasses) wet season GPP was approximately 75–80% of total annual GPP. Light‐use efficiency (LUE) was largest for the wet season and smallest in the dry season and C4 LUE was larger than that of the trees. A sensitivity analysis of GPP revealed that daily GPP was most sensitive to changes in leaf area index (LAI) and foliar nitrogen (Nf) and relatively insensitive to changes in maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) and minimum leaf water potential (ψmin). The modified model was also able to represent daily and seasonal patterns in ET, (explaining 68–81% of variance) with a low RMSE (0.038–0.19 mm day?1). Current values of Nf, LAI and other parameters appear to be colimiting for maximizing GPP. By manipulating LAI and soil moisture content inputs, we show that modelled GPP is limited by light interception rather than water availability at this site.  相似文献

To study whether the biomass of soil microorganisms in a boreal Pinus sylvestris-Vaccinium vitis-idaea forest was limited by the availability of carbon or nitrogen, we applied sucrose from sugar cane, a C4 plant, to the organic mor-layer of the C3–C dominated soil. We can distinguish between microbial mineralization of the added sucrose and respiration of endogenous carbon (root and microbial) by using the C4-sucrose as a tracer, exploiting the difference in natural abundance of 13C between the added C4-sucrose (13C –10.8) and the endogenous C3–carbon (13C –26.6 ). In addition to sucrose, NH4Cl (340 kg N ha–1) was added factorially to the mor-layer. We followed the microbial activity for nine days after the treatments, by in situ sampling of CO2 evolved from the soil and mass spectrometric analyses of 13C in the CO2. We found that microbial biomass was limited by the availability of carbon, rather than nitrogen availability, since there was a 50% increase in soil respiration in situ between 1 h and 5 days after adding the sucrose. However, no further increase was observed unless nitrogen was also added. Analyses of the 13C ratios of the evolved CO2 showed that increases in respiration observed between 1 h and 9 days after the additions could be accounted for by an increase in mineralization of the added C4–C.  相似文献

Evidence is presented for the existence of a Venturia homologue of hemomucin, a surface mucin that was recently described in Drosophila. Venturia hemomucin is part of the mucinous layer on the egg and larval surface of the parasitoid. Venturia hemomucin forms a complex with lipophorin and other host hemolymph components, that is similar to a hemomucin-lipophorin complex which is part of the coagulation reaction. The possible formation of a specific layer against the host defence system is discussed for eggs and larvae that develop inside another insect.  相似文献

Background  

The development and propagation of malaria parasites in their vertebrate host is a complex process in which various host and parasite factors are involved. Sometimes the evolution of parasitaemia seems to be quelled by parasite load. In order to understand the typical dynamics of evolution of parasitaemia, various mathematical models have been developed. The basic premise ingrained in most models is that the availability of uninfected red blood cells (RBC) in which the parasite develops is a limiting factor in the propagation of the parasite population.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization may occur in situations of recent contact between a colonizer and a resident species, being more intense in the colonization front. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout S. trutta have been sympatric species since their origin and they share spatial and temporal spawning niches, exhibiting low levels of bidirectional interspecific hybridization and introgression throughout their distribution range. Different causes have been identified for increased hybridization, from escapes or deliberate releases of domesticated fish to sneaking male behavior. We have examined hybridization rates and direction in different situations of advance of one of these species into a territory formerly inhabited by the other (247 samples were analyzed in northern Spain and 487 in Kerguelen Islands). In all cases, hybrids found in the colonization front were offspring of colonizer females and resident males. We hypothesize that these findings are the result of adaptive relaxed mate choice of colonizing females, regardless of the relative abundance of each species.  相似文献

Kennedy and Guégan, based on Cornell and Lawton (J Anim Ecol 1992;61:1–12), found a curvilinear relationship (the fundamental form of the relationship for parasite communities) between infracommunity and component community richness, and interpreted this as meaning that only processes acting within the infracommunities can explain the limitation in the number of parasite species in a given host. The research described here shows that an asymptotic relationship is the consequence of the differential likelihoods of parasite species to appear in an infracommunity as determined by transmission rates and intrinsic lifespans. Processes operating at the infracommunity level are not necessary to explain the curvilinear relationship. Even communities much richer than those found in European freshwater fishes cannot be assumed to be saturated in the sense that further species cannot be added over evolutionary time.  相似文献

The outputs of prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha, PGE-2 and 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha from Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig endometrium in culture were reduced by the inclusion of actinomycin D, cycloheximide and puromycin in the culture medium, with the output of PGF-2 alpha from Day-15 endometrium being particularly affected during the first 6 h of culture. The intrauterine administration of actinomycin D on Day 10 decreased the outputs of PGF-2 alpha and PGE-2, but not of 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha, from Day-15 endometrium in culture without affecting PG output from Day-15 myometrium in culture. Actinomycin D, cycloheximide and puromycin did not reduce PG output when superfused over the Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig uterus in vitro for 20 min, indicating that these compounds do not have a rapid inhibitory effect on endometrial PG synthesis. In fact, they tended to stimulate PG output during this 20-min period, with cycloheximide having a pronounced effect on PGE-2 output. The synthesis of secreted proteins, but not of cellular proteins, was greater by Day-15 than by Day-7 endometrium in culture. Actinomycin D, cycloheximide and puromycin inhibited the synthesis of secreted and cellular proteins by Day-7 and Day-15 endometrium in culture. Protein synthesis and PG synthesis in the endometrium were both inhibited to a greater extent by cycloheximide and puromycin than by actinomycin D. The intrauterine administration of actinomycin D on Day 10 reduced the syntheses of secreted and cellular proteins by Day-15 endometrium in culture. These findings indicate that the endometrial synthesis of PGs, particularly of PGF-2 alpha towards the end of the oestrous cycle, is dependent upon endometrial protein synthesis.  相似文献

We conducted meta-analyses of 290 published field and glasshouse trials to determine the effects of various agricultural practices on mycorrhizal colonization in nonsterile soils, and the consequence of those effects on yield, biomass, and phosphorus (P) concentration. Mycorrhizal colonization was increased most by inoculation (29% increase), followed by shortened fallow (20%) and reduced soil disturbance (7%). The effect of crop rotation depended on whether the crop was mycorrhizal. Increased colonization resulted in a yield increase in the field of 23% across all management practices. Biomass at harvest and shoot P concentration in early season were increased by inoculation (57 and 33%, respectively) and shortened fallow (55 and 24%). Reduced disturbance increased shoot P concentration by 27%, but biomass was not significantly affected. Biomass was significantly reduced in 2% of all trials in which there was a significant increase in colonization. Irrespective of management practice, an increased mycorrhizal colonization was less likely to increase biomass if either soil P or indigenous inoculum potential was high.  相似文献

If competitive ability depends on body size, then the optimal natal movement from areas of high local population density can also be predicted to be size-dependent. Specifically, small, competitively-inferior individuals would be expected to benefit most from moving to areas of lower local density. Here we evaluate whether individual variation in natal movement following emergence from nests is consistent with such a size-dependent strategy in Atlantic salmon, and whether such a strategy is evident across a range of environmental conditions (principally predator presence and conspecific density). In stream channel experiments, those juveniles that stayed close to nests were larger than those that emigrated. This result was not sensitive to predator presence or conspecific density. These observations were mirrored in natural streams in which salmon eggs were planted in nests and the resulting offspring were sampled at high spatial resolution. A negative relationship was found between juvenile body size and distance from nests early in development whereas in those streams sampled later in ontogeny, individuals that had moved furthest were largest. Thus, movement away from nests appeared to result in a reduced competitive intensity and increased growth rate. The fact that there is ultimately a growth advantage associated with moving suggests that there is also a cost that selects against movement by the larger individuals. Thus, natal movement in juvenile Atlantic salmon appears to represent a body size-dependent strategy.  相似文献

I manipulated egg size and followed individual mass trajectories from the egg stage in Atlantic salmon to test for effects of size, and for interactions between size and paternal body mass, on offspring performance in strongly food-limited environments. Egg size had a strong effect on body mass at yolk absorption, causing juveniles originating from large eggs to outgrow their siblings from small eggs. This corroborates previous findings of egg size effects under more benign environments, and demonstrates that positive effects of egg size on offspring success are manifested even under strong food-limitation. Previously reported negative effects of being large during the critical period for survival in dense populations are thus likely related to social interactions, rather than to effects of density on total food abundance in the environment. The effect of egg size on offspring performance, and hence the optimal egg size, was independent of paternal body mass.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon are typically anadromous, spending the majority of their lifetime in oceans and returning to fresh water to breed. This diversity of environments likely results in strong selective forces shaping their genome. In this paper, we present the first genomics approach to detect positive selection operating on the Salmo salar (salmon) lineage, an important aquaculture species. We identify a panel of candidate genes that may have been subject to adaptive evolution in this species. In particular, we identify a robust signature of positive selection operating on the salmon CD3γδ gene, which encodes one of the protein chains essential for formation of the T-cell receptor complex and for T-cell activation. Furthermore, we identified the particular codon sites that have been subject to positive selection in fish and highlight two sites flanking an important N-glycosylation site in this molecule.
