Exercise induced increases in muscle fiber number   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of weight-lifting, which induced muscular enlargement, on fiber number was tested in the flexor carpi radialis muscle by operantly conditioning 6 cats to flex their right wrist against increasing resistance for an average of 101 weeks. The left was used as a control. At the end of training, the cats were performing "one-arm" lifts with an average of 57% of their body weight. There was an 11% greater muscle weight (P less than 0.01) and 9% (P less than 0.02) more fibers in the exercised muscles from the right limb than in the left. This study using a different method, supports our earlier observations that prolonged weight-lifting exercise significantly increases the total number of muscle fibers.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a positive reinforcement protocol to motivate weight-lifting exercise in rats. Intracranial self-stimulation was used to induce weight-lifting exercise. Bipolar electrodes were implanted in the ventral tegmental area of rats, and the animals were trained to bar press on a continuous reinforcement schedule for electrical brain stimulation. Animals with response rates of 1,200-1,500 presses/h were then trained with a discriminative light stimulus to alternate between a normally positioned bar and an elevated bar that could be reached only by standing on the hindlimbs. The animals were fitted with a weighted jacket at a starting resistance of 5-10% of their body weight. Weight-training sessions were conducted 5 days/wk for 10 wk. Training consisted of 600 presses/session, alternating every 15 presses between the low and high bars. At the beginning of each subsequent week, the resistance was progressively increased, with some animals eventually training at resistances greater than 50% of their body weight. At the end of the training period, the rats were lifting over 550% of the starting weight. Gastrocnemius size and mean fiber diameter were increased in the weight-lifting animals. This model combines exercise with positive incentive and has the advantages of being relatively easy to implement and not producing any apparent physical or mental trauma in the animal.  相似文献

The cardiovascular adaptation at the onset of voluntary static exercise is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Two neural mechanisms are responsible for the cardiovascular adaptation: one is central command descending from higher brain centers, and the other is a muscle mechanosensitive reflex from activation of mechanoreceptors in the contracting muscles. To examine which mechanism played a major role in producing the initial cardiovascular adaptation during static exercise, we studied the effect of intravenous administration of gadolinium (55 micromol/kg), a blocker of stretch-activated ion channels, on the increases in heart rate (HR) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) at the onset of voluntary static exercise (pressing a bar with a forelimb) in conscious cats. HR increased by 31 +/- 5 beats/min and MAP increased by 15 +/- 1 mmHg at the onset of voluntary static exercise. Gadolinium affected neither the baseline values nor the initial increases of HR and MAP at the onset of exercise, although the peak force applied to the bar tended to decrease to 65% of the control value before gadolinium. Furthermore, we examined the effect of gadolinium on the reflex responses in HR and MAP (18 +/- 7 beats/min and 30 +/- 6 mmHg, respectively) during passive mechanical stretch of a forelimb or hindlimb in anesthetized cats. Gadolinium significantly blunted the passive stretch-induced increases in HR and MAP, suggesting that gadolinium blocks the stretch-activated ion channels and thereby attenuates the reflex cardiovascular responses to passive mechanical stretch of a limb. We conclude that the initial cardiovascular adaptation at the onset of voluntary static exercise is predominantly induced by feedforward control of central command descending from higher brain centers but not by a muscle mechanoreflex.  相似文献

Seven male cats were adapted to different schedules of restricted sleep. The cat was permitted to go to sleep either 2, 4 or 8 hours per day with the balance to 24-h periode spent in wakefulness enforced by means of a treadmill. Two experiments were run and the same cats served in both runs. The experiments and schedules were separated by at least two weeks during which time cats were maintained under ordinary laboratory conditions. Our experiment used treadmill speed of 2.6 m/min which was easily tolerated and effective in eliminating sleep. Another experiment used treadmill speed of 4.6 m/min which produced more physical exercise. As available sleep time become progressively shorter, REM sleep increased while SWS decreased. If restriction in sleep time was associated with more physical exercise then the composition of the subsequent sleep was different : SWS increased while REM sleep decreased. The functional significance of these opposite effects are presumably different. The immediate SWS response to the prior muscular exercise is suggestive of its recovery function.  相似文献

We determined whether short-term weight-lifting exercise increases the synthesis rate of the major contractile proteins, myosin heavy chain (MHC), actin, and mixed muscle proteins in nonfrail elders and younger women and men. Fractional synthesis rates of mixed, MHC, and actin proteins were determined in seven healthy sedentary 23- to 32-yr-old and seven healthy 78- to 84-yr-old participants in paired studies done before and at the end of a 2-wk weight-lifting program. The in vivo rate of incorporation of 1-[(13)C]leucine into vastus lateralis MHC, actin, and mixed proteins was determined using a 14-h constant intravenous infusion of 1-[(13)C]leucine. Before exercise, the mixed and MHC fractional synthetic rates were lower in the older than in the younger participants (P < or = 0.04). Baseline actin protein synthesis rates were similar in the two groups (P = not significant). Over a 2-wk period, participants completed ten 1- to 1. 5-h weight-lifting exercise sessions: 2-3 sets per day of 9 exercises, 8-12 repetitions per set, at 60-90% of maximum voluntary muscle strength. At the end of exercise, MHC and mixed protein synthetic rates increased in the younger (88 and 121%) and older participants (105 and 182%; P < 0.001 vs. baseline). These findings indicate that MHC and mixed protein synthesis rates are reduced more than actin in advanced age. Similar to that of 23-32 yr olds, the vastus lateralis muscle in 78-84 yr olds retains the capacity to increase MHC and mixed protein synthesis rates in response to short-term resistance exercise.  相似文献

Exercise-induced respiratory muscle fatigue: implications for performance.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is commonly held that the respiratory system has ample capacity relative to the demand for maximal O(2) and CO(2) transport in healthy humans exercising near sea level. However, this situation may not apply during heavy-intensity, sustained exercise where exercise may encroach on the capacity of the respiratory system. Nerve stimulation techniques have provided objective evidence that the diaphragm and abdominal muscles are susceptible to fatigue with heavy, sustained exercise. The fatigue appears to be due to elevated levels of respiratory muscle work combined with an increased competition for blood flow with limb locomotor muscles. When respiratory muscles are prefatigued using voluntary respiratory maneuvers, time to exhaustion during subsequent exercise is decreased. Partially unloading the respiratory muscles during heavy exercise using low-density gas mixtures or mechanical ventilation can prevent exercise-induced diaphragm fatigue and increase exercise time to exhaustion. Collectively, these findings suggest that respiratory muscle fatigue may be involved in limiting exercise tolerance or that other factors, including alterations in the sensation of dyspnea or mechanical load, may be important. The major consequence of respiratory muscle fatigue is an increased sympathetic vasoconstrictor outflow to working skeletal muscle through a respiratory muscle metaboreflex, thereby reducing limb blood flow and increasing the severity of exercise-induced locomotor muscle fatigue. An increase in limb locomotor muscle fatigue may play a pivotal role in determining exercise tolerance through a direct effect on muscle force output and a feedback effect on effort perception, causing reduced motor output to the working limb muscles.  相似文献

It is unknown if females and males use jaw muscles similarly during exercise. This pilot study assessed jaw elevator muscle duty factors (DFs = time of muscle activity/total recording time) at repeated sessions to test if DFs are reliable and different between sexes during exercises in two environments. Ten female and seven male subjects recruited from university soccer teams provided informed consent. Surface electromyography was recorded from masseter and temporalis muscles during biting and leg-extension laboratory exercises. Average activities to produce 20 N bite-forces for each muscle and subject determined thresholds (5–80%·T20 N) for subject-specific DF calculations during exercises performed in laboratory and natural environments. Subjects self-recorded via portable electromyography equipment during in-field leg-extension and weight-lifting exercises. Effects of variables on DFs were assessed via ANOVA (α = 0.05) and simple effects testing (Bonferroni-adjusted p  0.012). All subjects used jaw muscles during exercises in both environments. DFs between laboratory sessions were reliable (R = 0.84). During laboratory exercises, male temporalis DFs were significantly higher than female DFs from both muscles (p  0.001). During in-field exercises females had higher DFs during weight-lifting while males had higher DFs during leg-extensions. In-field sex differences were significant at most thresholds and showed larger effect sizes for leg-extension compared to weight-lifting exercises.  相似文献

Unwanted cats surrendered to nonhuman animal shelters are generally categorized as either “owned” or “stray.” This classification is misleading because “stray” cats may include many “semiowned” cats, for which people provide care but who are not perceived as being owned. This differentiation is important because effective strategies designed to reduce cat admissions to, and euthanasia rates in, shelters rely on accurate information about cat populations contributing to shelter intake; cat semiowners will likely respond to different strategies than people with no relationship with the cats they surrender. People surrendering cats to four Australian animal shelters were surveyed to identify factors associated with perception of ownership. Many self-classified nonowners had fed the cats they surrendered, often for a considerable period of time. The factor most strongly associated with ownership perception was an increasing association time with the cat. These findings confirm that enduring relationships between surrenderers and cats, consistent with cat semiownership, are common for cats surrendered to Australian animal shelters. This finding should be taken into account when planning education messages and cat population management strategies aimed at reducing cat admissions.  相似文献

The complex connective tissue structure of muscle and tendon suggests that forces from two parts of a muscle may not summate linearly, particularly in muscles with intrafasciculary terminating fibers, such as cat tibialis anterior (TA). In four anesthetized cats, the TA was attached to a servomechanism to control muscle length and record force. The ventral roots were divided into two bundles, each innervating about half the TA, so the two parts could be stimulated alone or together. Nonlinear summation of force (F(nl)) was measured during isometric contractions. F(nl) was small and negative, indicating less than linear summation of the parts, which is consistent with the predicted F(nl) of muscle fibers connected in series. F(nl) was more significant when smaller parts of the muscle were tested (21.8 vs. 8% for whole muscle). These data were fit to a model where both parts of the muscle were assumed to stretch a common elasticity. Compensatory movements of the servomechanism showed the common elasticity is very stiff, and the model cannot account for F(nl) in cat TA.  相似文献

The complex connective tissue structure of muscle and tendon suggests that forces from two parts of a muscle may not summate linearly. This study measured the nonlinear summation of force (F(nl)) in whole cat soleus during isometric and ramp movements. In six anesthetized cats, the soleus was attached to a servomechanism to control muscle length and record force. The ventral roots were divided into two bundles, each innervating about half the soleus; thus the two parts could be stimulated alone or together. In all experiments, F(nl) was small (<6% of maximum tetanic tension). Peak F(nl) occurred during changes in muscle force, either as a result of imposed muscle movement or the onset or offset of a stimulus train. The data were fit to a model in which both parts of the muscle were assumed to stretch to a common elasticity. The servomechanism was programmed to compensate for reduced stretch of the common elasticity during partial compared with whole muscle activation. These compensatory movements showed how the model could account for most, but not all, of F(nl).  相似文献

Arterial blood pressure response to heavy resistance exercise   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The purpose of this study was to record the blood pressure response to heavy weight-lifting exercise in five experienced body builders. Blood pressure was directly recorded by means of a capacitance transducer connected to a catheter in the brachial artery. Intrathoracic pressure with the Valsalva maneuver was recorded as mouth pressure by having the subject maintain an open glottis while expiring against a column of Hg during the lifts. Exercises included single-arm curls, overhead presses, and both double- and single-leg presses performed to failure at 80, 90, 95, and 100% of maximum. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures rose rapidly to extremely high values during the concentric contraction phase for each lift and declined with the eccentric contraction. The greatest peak pressures occurred during the double-leg press where the mean value for the group was 320/250 mmHg, with pressures in one subject exceeding 480/350 mmHg. Peak pressures with the single-arm curl exercise reached a mean group value of 255/190 mmHg when repetitions were continued to failure. Mouth pressures of 30-50 Torr during a single maximum lift, or as subjects approached failure with a submaximal weight, indicate that a portion of the observed increase in blood pressure was caused by a Valsalva maneuver. It was concluded that when healthy young subjects perform weight-lifting exercises the mechanical compression of blood vessels combines with a potent pressor response and a Valsalva response to produce extreme elevations in blood pressure. Pressures are extreme even when exercise is performed with a relatively small muscle mass.  相似文献

The discharge rate of muscle spindle afferents normally provides a precise signal of muscle length. Vibration of a muscle or its tendon induces an increase in afferent discharge which then no longer represents true muscle length; however, this increased proprioceptive input is interpreted in the central nervous system as a lengthening of the muscle. The incremented signal gives rise to illusions of displacement, or movement, of a fixed, vibrated limb. A visual target attached to such a vibrated limb also appears to move. We now report that vibration of the neck muscles influences visual localisation by inducing illusory movement of targets in visual space. Subjects were seated in a totally dark room and viewed a light-emitting diode (LED). The LED was placed at eye level approximately in the body midline at a distance of 70 cm. They held a physiotherapy vibrator in the left hand with its tip against the left side of the neck. When vibration was initiated the LED appeared to move rightward. The position of the tip of the vibrator was adjusted to produce the maximum apparent displacement to the right. In some subjects the illusion had a vertical component. Subjects maintained the vibrator in position and described the illusion when vibration began, during vibration and at its end. They reported that, initially, the target moved to the right but this displacement ceased after a second or two. The target then appeared to continue in motion without changing its position. When vibration ended the target returned to its initial position.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In humans, the pressor and muscle sympathetic nerve responses to static exercise are less in women than in men. The difference has been attributed to the effect of estrogen on the exercise pressor reflex. Estrogen receptors are abundant in areas of the dorsal horn receiving input from group III and IV muscle afferents, which comprise the sensory limb of the exercise pressor reflex arc. These findings prompted us to investigate the effect of estrogen on the spinal pathway of the exercise pressor reflex arc. Previously, we found that the threshold concentration of 17beta-estradiol needed to attenuate the exercise pressor reflex in male decerebrate cats was 10 microg/ml (Schmitt PM and Kaufman MP. J Appl Physiol 94: 1431-1436, 2003). The threshold concentration for female cats, however, is not known. Consequently, we applied 17beta-estradiol to a well covering the L6-S1 spinal cord in decerebrate female cats. The exercise pressor reflex was evoked by electrical stimulation of the L7 or S1 ventral root, a maneuver that caused the hindlimb muscles to contract statically. We found that the pressor response to contraction averaged 38 +/- 7 mmHg before the application of 17beta-estradiol (0.01 microg/ml) to the spinal cord, whereas it averaged only 23 +/- 4 mmHg 30 min after application (P < 0.05). Recovery of the pressor response to contraction was not obtained for 2 h after application of 17beta-estradiol. Application of 17beta-estradiol in a dose of 0.001 microg/ml had no effect on the exercise pressor reflex (n = 5). We conclude that the concentration of 17beta-estradiol required to attenuate the exercise pressor reflex is 1,000 times more dilute in female cats than that needed to attenuate this reflex in male cats.  相似文献

We examined whether a sympathetic cholinergic mechanism contributed to increased blood flow of the exercising muscle at the onset of voluntary static exercise in conscious cats. After six cats were operantly conditioned to perform static bar press exercise with a forelimb while maintaining a sitting posture, a Transonic or pulsed Doppler flow probe was implanted on the brachial artery of the exercising forelimb, and catheters were inserted into the left carotid artery and jugular vein. After the baseline brachial blood flow and vascular conductance decreased and became stable in progress of postoperative recovery, the static exercise experiments were started. Brachial blood flow and vascular conductance began to increase simultaneously with the onset of exercise. Their initial increases reached 52 +/- 8% and 40 +/- 6% at 3 s from the exercise onset, respectively. Both a sympathetic ganglionic blocker (hexamethonium bromide) and atropine sulfate or methyl nitrate blunted the increase in brachial vascular conductance at the onset of static exercise, whereas an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis (N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester) did not alter the increase in brachial vascular resistance. Brachial blood flow and vascular conductance increased during natural grooming behavior with the forelimb in which the flow probe was implanted, whereas they decreased during grooming with the opposite forelimb and during eating behavior. Thus it is likely that the sympathetic cholinergic mechanism is capable of evoking muscle vasodilatation at the onset of voluntary static exercise in conscious cats.  相似文献

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends lifting a weight of at least 70% 1RM to achieve muscular hypertrophy as it is believed that anything below this intensity rarely produces substantial muscle growth. At least part of this recommendation is related to elevated systemic hormones following heavy resistance training being associated with skeletal muscle hypertrophy. Despite benefits of high intensity resistance training, many individuals are unable to withstand the high mechanical stresses placed upon the joints during heavy resistance training. Blood flow restricted exercise offers a novel mode of exercise allowing skeletal muscle hypertrophy at low intensities, however the testosterone response to this exercise has yet to be discussed. The acute and chronic testosterone response to blood flow restricted exercise appears to be minimal when examining the current literature. Despite this lack of response, notable increases in both size and strength are observed with this type of exercise, which seems to support that systemic increases of endogenous testosterone are not necessary for muscular hypertrophy to occur. However, definitive conclusions cannot be made without a more thorough analysis of responses of androgen receptor density following blood flow restricted exercise. It may also be that there are differing mechanisms underlying hypertrophy induced by high intensity resistance training and via blood flow restricted exercise.  相似文献

Satellite cell regulation following myotrauma caused by resistance exercise   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
It is generally accepted that the primary mechanisms governing skeletal muscle hypertrophy are satellite cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation. Specific growth factors and hormones modulate satellite cell activity during normal muscle growth, but as a consequence of resistance exercise additional regulators may stimulate satellite cells to contribute to gains in myofiber size and number. Present knowledge of the regulation of the cellular, biochemical and molecular events accompanying skeletal muscle hypertrophy after resistance exercise is incomplete. We propose that resistance exercise may induce satellite cells to become responsive to cytokines from the immune system and to circulating hormones and growth factors. The purpose of this paper is to review the role of satellite cells and growth factors in skeletal muscle hypertrophy that follows resistance exercise.  相似文献

Embryo technology in conservation efforts for endangered felids   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7

Most of the 36 species of wild cats are classified as threatened, vulnerable or endangered due to poaching and habitat loss. The important role of assisted reproduction techniques (ART) as part of a multifaceted captive breeding program for selected wild cat species is gradually gaining acceptance. This recognition is a result of the progress made during the last decade in which the feasibility of oocyte recovery from gonadotropin-treated females, in vitro fertilization, embryo cryopreservation and embryo transfer (ET) was demonstrated in the domestic cat (Felis catus). Additionally, embryos have been produced in vitro from oocytes matured in vitro after recovery from ex situ ovaries of both domestic and non-domestic cat species and domestic kittens have been born following transfer of these embryos. In vitro fertilization has been successful in at least one-third of wild cat species and kittens were born after transfer of Indian desert cat (Felis sylvestris ornata) embryos into a domestic cat and con-specific transfer of tiger (Panthera tigris) embryos. The domestic cat is not only a valuable model for development of in vitro techniques but may serve as a recipient of embryos from several species of small wild cats.  相似文献

Newer techniques of exercise which rely on a static or isometric muscle contraction of six seconds'' duration once daily offer great possibilities in the treatment of patients incapacitated by low cardiac reserve, joints that are painful on movement or debility too severe to permit a conventional exercise program for general conditioning. Increments of strength of up to two per cent per day can be thus achieved in normal muscles. Muscles deconditioned by immobilization respond at a faster rate. However, no significant muscle hypertrophy can be achieved by this technique. This form of exercise can also be used by persons who are “too busy to exercise” but who may be willing to give two minutes a day to an exercise program designed to increase and maintain muscle tone and strength.A considerable number of medical conditions could be treated more effectively and with less resultant disability if therapeutic exercises—passive, active and progressive—were accurately prescribed and supervised by a physician as part of the treatment program. Among the many conditions to be considered are poliomyelitis, peripheral nerve injuries, the neuritides, postural defects and cardiac diseases.  相似文献

The relationship between taurine concentrations of plasma, whole blood, serum and skeletal muscle during taurine depletion and repletion was investigated in cats, to identify the most useful indicators of taurine status. Sixteen cats were fed a purified diet containing either 0 or 0.15 g/kg taurine for 5 months. Treatments were then reversed and the taurine concentration was measured during repletion and depletion phases. Plasma taurine exhibited the fastest rate (slow component) of depletion (t 1/2 = 4.8 wk), followed by serum (5.3 wk), whole blood (6.2 wk), and skeletal muscle (11.2 wk). Whole blood taurine was the first to replete at a rate of 0.74 wk to 1/2 maximal repletion, followed by serum (2.1 wk), skeletal muscle (3.5 wk), and plasma (3.5 wk). Whole blood more closely reflected skeletal muscle taurine concentrations than plasma during depletion, while plasma taurine concentrations appear to be the most valuable predictor of skeletal muscle taurine concentrations during repletion. This study suggests that the best clinical method to evaluate the taurine status of the cat is the determination and interpretation of both plasma and whole blood taurine concentrations.  相似文献
