Scions of a southern (59° 40'N Lat.) and a northern (69° 39'N Lat.) ecotype of Salix pentandra L. were grafted on clonal rootstocks of the same ecotypes. Effects of photoperiod on elongation growth of the 4 combinations (south/south, south/north, north/south and north/north) were studied in a phytotron at 18° and 15°C. The photoperiodic response was primarily dependent on the ecotype of the scion, but this response was significantly modified by the rootstock. Cessation of apical growth was advanced by a northern clone and delayed by a southern clone as a rootstock. The results indicate that the critical photoperiod for cessation of apical growth could be slightly decreased by a northern and increased by a southern rootstock.  相似文献

The classification of the sharks is unclear. This is particularly true for the superorder Squalomorphii. The relationships between the squalomorphs and other superorders of sharks and the relationships between the different orders within the squalomorphs are a matter of debate. Here, we report a molecular phylogeny for a little known member of this superorder, the genus Echinorhinus. Echinorhinus is most commonly classified in either the family Echinorhinidae (Squaliformes) or the family Squalidae (Squaliformes). However, some authors have suggested a closer relationship to the order Hexanchiformes. In an attempt to shed light on this controversy, we have cloned, sequenced, and compared two genes widely used in molecular phylogeny studies, the cytochrome b and the 18S rRNA from the rare prickly shark, Echinorhinus cookei, and two potential relatives, the spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias (Squaliformes), and the sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus (Hexanchiformes). The sequences of these genes for the prickly shark, the dogfish, and the sevengill shark were found to be equally divergent, suggesting that the prickly shark is no closer to the order Squaliformes than to the order Hexanchiformes.  相似文献

Taxonomic relationships between Rhabdorrhynchus and Pachycerus are discussed, and two new species of Rhabdorrhynchus are described: Rhabdorrhynchus sauditus (type locality: Saudi Arabia, As Shāqqah al Yamānīyah, 19°42'N, 40°48'E) and Rhabdorrhynchus emir (type locality: United Arab Emirates, Jebel Ali, 24°59'N, 55°43'E). Some hypotheses on the distribution of the new species in the Arabian Peninsula, based on a biogeographical analysis, are proposed.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 25–37.  相似文献

The development of lateral plate number in completely plated three-spined stickleback populations during the period of growth of the body after hatching was studied in two streams in Central Poland. The streams belong to the Oder River drainage basin (51°38'N; 19°26'E) and the Vistula River drainage basin (51°35'N; 19°37'E), respectively. After reaching a total length of 27 mm the development of lateral plate number is completed in both populations. This value is lower than thc corresponding values rcported in the literature.  相似文献

Recent studies on shark assemblages on the northeast Florida and southeast Georgia coast (hereafter referred to collectively as the “First Coast”) have demonstrated differences in species and age-class composition of catch from previously characterized estuaries and newly surveyed area beaches, demonstrating that these regions may provide a critical habitat to different segments (i.e., life stages) of local shark populations. In this study, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) from muscle tissue and blood plasma were used to examine trophic dynamics (and temporal variability thereof) of the three dominant co-occurring species found along First Coast beaches (the Atlantic Sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, Blacknose shark Carcharhinus acronotus and Blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus) to determine if they exhibit overlap in resource use along with spatial and temporal habitat use. Although considered spatially segregated from the beach species, a dominant, age-class species found in First Coast estuaries (juvenile Sandbar sharks Carcharhinus plumbeus) was also included in this analysis for comparison. Temporal variability of resource-use characteristics was detected at the species level. Resource-use overlap among species varied by tissue type and was generally higher for blood plasma, suggesting greater resource sharing over more recent time periods. Over longer time periods Atlantic Sharpnose and Blacktip sharks exhibited resource-use expansion, whereas Blacknose sharks exhibited a narrowing in resource use, suggesting a more specialized foraging strategy compared to the other species. The resource-use breadth of Sandbar sharks also expanded between blood plasma and muscle tissue. Significant size relationships were detected in Blacktip and Sandbar sharks, indicating ontogenetic resource shifts for both species. A diversity of highly productive resource pools likely support shark populations along the First Coast such that resource-use differentiation is not required to facilitate species co-occurrence. This work may shed light on understanding patterns of species co-occurrence as well as aid in future conservation efforts.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. For many species of insect, cold hardiness is an important trait that enables a population to develop in the next season and to extend its range. To elucidate the role of cold hardiness of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria L. in its outbreak and distribution areas, egg cold hardiness was examined in locusts derived from four locations from latitude 18°23'N to latitude 41°10'N in eastern China.
2. The supercooling points of eggs from different geographic populations did not differ significantly for the first development stage, with an average ± SE of −24.5 ± 0.51 °C, or for the second stage, −22.06 ± 0.68 °C, however there was a significant difference for the embryonic development phase among the four geographical populations. The egg supercooling point increased gradually from neonatal egg to old egg; eggs prior to hatching always had a much higher supercooling point.
3. Comparisons of the cold hardiness of four populations were carried out by validating the close correlation between latitude and the effects of cold on hatching, low lethal temperature (Ltemp50), and low lethal time (Ltime50). There were significant differences among the four populations; the northern population was more cold hardy than the southern population, and the two mid-latitude populations were intermediately cold hardy.
4. The cold hardiness of all populations was enhanced to various degrees by short-term cold acclimation at 0 °C and 5 °C. For most populations, a 2-day acclimation period seemed to be optimal.  相似文献

Phytoplankton production and physico-chemical parameters were measured during the summers of 1976 and 1977 in Lake 95 at 60°52'N, 46°01'W (area 8 ha, z 6.9 m). The duration of lake stratification during summer was weather dependent. Concentrations of total-CO2 ranged from 2.04 mg l−1 (surface) to 4.02 mg l−1 (bottom during stratification). Nutrient concentrations were generally low, and systematic seasonal variation could not be detected with certainty. Vertical distribution of primary production typically showed a distinct maximum followed by a decline with depth. The low production, both per unit area (max. 60 mg C m−2 d−1) and per unit volume (max, 14.3 mg C m−3 d−1), and the annual production of 4.7 g C m−2 classified the lake as extremely oligotrophic.  相似文献

Abstract: Leaf phenology of 17 poplar ( Populus spp.) clones, encompassing spring phenology, length of growth period and end-of-year phenology, was examined over several years of different rotations. The 17 poplar clones differed in their latitude of origin (45°30'N to 51°N) and were studied on a short rotation experimental field plantation, situated in Boom (province of Antwerpen, Belgium; 51°05'N, 04°22'E). A similar, clear pattern of bud burst was observed during the different years of study for all clones. Clones Columbia River, Fritzi Pauley, Trichobel (Populus trichocarpa) and Balsam Spire (Populus trichocarpa × Populus balsamifera) from 45°30'N to 49°N reached bud burst (expressed as day of the year or degree day sums) almost every year earlier than clones Wolterson (Populus nigra), Gaver, Gibecq and Primo (Populus deltoides × Populus nigra) (50°N to 51°N). This observation could not be generalised to end-of-season phenology, for which a yearly returning pattern for all clones was lacking. Late bud burst and early leaf fall of some clones (Beaupré, Boelare, IBW1, IBW2, IBW3) was brought about by increasing rust incidence during the years of observation. For these clones, the variability in leaf phenology was reflected in high coefficients of variation among years. The patterns of genetic variation in leaf phenology have implications for short rotation intensive culture forestry and management of natural populations. Moreover, the variation in phenology reported here is relevant with regard to the genetic mapping of poplar.  相似文献

Effects of photoperiod and temperature on vegetative growth of seedling populations and clones of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) originating from various latitudes (58°48'–69°54'N) and altitudes (up to 1100 m above sea level) were studied in a phytotron. Dry matter production, stolon elongation, petiole elongation and leaf lamina size were enhanced by long photoperiod. The requirement for long photoperiod increased with decreasing temperature. At 6°C the maximum growth was recorded under 24-h daylength. At 18°C already an increase in photoperiod from 12 to 15 h significantly enhanced growth, and maximum growth was obtained at 21-h photoperiod. The studied populations responded similarly to daylength, and the results did not indicate photoperiodic ecotypes in the material. The southernmost clones and populations generally had the highest dry matter production at all temperature treatments (6–18°C). Variation between clones within one location was, however, significant, and rapidly growing clones were found also in high-latitude locations. Dry matter production was poorly correlated with the morphological characters observed, but in some cases significant correlation with leaf lamina size was found.  相似文献

Zoige wetland of Tibetan plateau is characterized by being located at a low latitude (33°56'N, 102°52'E) region and under the annual temperature around 1°C. Previous studies indicated that Zoige wetland was one of the CH4 emission centres in Qinghai-Tibetan plateau; in this study, the methanogen community in this low-latitude wetland was analysed based on the homology of 16S rRNA and mcrA genes retrieved from the soil. The results indicated that members of Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales constituted the majority of methanogens, and a novel uncultured methanogen cluster, Zoige cluster I (ZC-I) affiliated to Methanosarcinales , could be dominant. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay, ZC-I methanogens were estimated to be 107 cells per gram of soil, accounting for about 30% of the total Archeae . By combining culturable enrichment with qPCR assay, the quantity of ZC-I methanogens in the methanogenic enrichment with acetate, H2/CO2, methanol or trimethylamine was determined to increase to 108 cells ml−1, but not with formate, which indicated that ZC-I methanogens could use the four methanogenic substrates. The growth rates at 30°C and 15°C were not pronounced different, implying ZC-I to be the cold-adaptive methanogens. The broad substrate spectrum identified the ZC-I methanogens to be a member of Methanosarcinaceae , and could represent a novel sub-branch specifically inhabited in cold ecosystems. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) images also visualized ZC-I methanogens the sarcina-like aggregate of the spherical cells. The prevalence and flexibility in substrate utilization and growth temperature suggested ZC-I methanogens to be an important player in the methanogenesis of Zoige wetland.  相似文献

Fish assemblages on two inshore rocky subtidal sites on the west coast of Scotland, were studied using diver visual surveys on a monthly basis between September 1995 and December 1999. A total of 17 689 fishes and 26 species were recorded from the two sites, Saulmore Point (056°27'N; 005°24'W) near Oban and Davy's Rock (055°46'N; 004°53'W) on the Isle of Great Cumbrae. The gobiid Thorogobius eppiphiatus , dominated the Saulmore Point site; six fish species accounted for >93% of total abundance at that site. At Davy's Rock four species contributed at least 93% of total fish abundance, and the dominant species was the labrid Ctenolabrus rupestris . Total abundance of the dominant species displayed a clear seasonal trend, and this was significantly related to recorded daily average seawater temperature. A maximum abundance of 4.9 fishes m−2 was recorded in November 1998 at Davy's Rock and 2.5 fishes m−2 at Saulmore Point in October 1998. Multivariate analysis indicated a degree of variation in assemblage structure between winter and summer at both sites. A number of species showed some degree of interannual variation, in particular the gobiid Gobiusculus flavescens whose abundance increased by over 300 times over a 5 month period in 1998. Correlation analysis showed that variation in annual winter seawater temperature could act as an indicator of interannual variation in abundance of some of the dominant species utilizing rocky subtidal habitats.  相似文献

Muskrats Ondatra zibethicus were studied at Old Crow flats Yukon Territory (68°05'N, 140°05W) and Tiny Marsh, Ontario (44°35'N, 79°52'W) during the summers of 1985 and 1986 Life–history traits of these two populations were compared Litter size was not significantly different between the two sites However average annual productivity was significantly greater at Tiny Marsh where individuals produced more litters per season Growth rates of juvenile and adult muskrats were significantly greater at Tiny Marsh, as was juvenile and adult weight However overwinter survival of juvenile muskrats was significantly greater at Old Crow than at Tiny Marsh We suggest that the shorter growing season and proximate energetic limitations on growth and reproduction favour a conservative reproductive strategy by the northern muskrat population For the southern muskrat population a long growing season and high quality food resources allow for a more productive reproductive strategy  相似文献

The behaviour of the lesser sandeel, Ammodytes marinus (Raitt), has been investigated at light intensities of 1, 10, 100 and 1000 lux, using a photographic method of recording activity. The level of swimming activity was high at 1000 and 100 lux, declining to a very low level at 1 lux. It was concluded that this was due to the limiting effect of light on feeding. The threshold light intensity for swimming activity in the tank was estimated as being approximately 20 lux but it was considered that in the area of the sandeel fishing grounds the threshold might be higher than this, in the region of 100 lux. The number of hours light per day above 20 and 100 lux at a depth of 15 m in the area of the Outer Dowsing sandbank (53°30'N, 01°00'E) was estimated for the various months of the year. It was shown that during the winter the light intensity does not normally reach 100 lux and only exceeds 20 lux for a few hours each day. It is suggested that this could limit swimming activity and accessibility at this time of year. Measurements were made of the penetration of light into sand and it was concluded that fish which are buried might be able to detect light, possibly via the pineal gland.  相似文献

Investigated were the changes in fatty acid composition, oxidation and enzymatic deterioration of lipids in frozen (−30°C) fish fillets from the Persian Gulf. The narrow barred Spanish mackerel ( Scomberomorus commersoni ) and white cheek shark ( Carcharhinus dussumieri ) were tested with storage times of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months at −18°C. Statistical results showed that the major fatty acids among the saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids of each fish species were palmitic (C16:0) and oleic (C18:1n-9) acids, respectively. Both linoleic acid (C18:2n-6) and arachidonic acid (AA) (C20:4n-6) were predominant in total n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in both mackerel and shark. The EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; C20:5 n-3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid; C22:6 n-3) acids were the major fatty acids among total n-3 acids in both fishes. During frozen storage, the PUFA (40.1 and 23.94%), n-3 (48 and 42.83%), ω 3/ ω 6 (41.36 and 50%), PUFA/SFA (56 and 42.23%) and EPA + DHA/C16 (55.55 and 46.66%) contents decreased in S. commersoni and C. dussumieri , respectively. Also peroxide, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and free fatty acid (FFA) values significantly increased (P < 0.01) with the time of storage.  相似文献

Colonization of artificial substrata was monitored on sheltered rocky shores at Husvik, South Georgia (54° 11'S; 36° 40'W) and Cumbrae, Scotland (55° 46'N; 4° 55'W) from mid summer to early autumn. South Georgia is a remote island (1,330 km from other land); Cumbrae is only 2 km from nearby coasts. Both islands were heavily glaciated for a period up to about 10,000 ybp, so the intertidal fauna is of geologically recent origin. The South Georgian fauna is depauperate and consists mainly of direct developers; that of Cumbrae is rich and largely larviparous. Colonization rates at Cumbrae were one to four orders of magnitude greater than at Husvik. It is suggested that the fauna of South Georgian shores stems from colonization by rafting from remote sources, while Cumbrae has been supplied predominantly by short-range pelagic larval dispersal. The measured differences in colonization rates reflect the substantial local advantage of larval dispersal over direct development in established communities.  相似文献

The natural ether-lipids 1-O-alkylglycerols (alkyl-Gro) from shark liver oil improve boar sperm motility and fertility in vitro. We examined the effects of oral shark liver oil on motility and velocity parameters of sperm together with modifications of lipid composition. Eleven boars were used as control and 11 were fed with 40 g/day for 28 days and sperm was collected on Days 0, 14 and 28 in control and treated groups. After 28 days treatment, sperm motility was improved by 2.9% as well as velocity parameters (curvilinear velocity +10.75%, progressive velocity +18.8% and average path velocity +13.5%) and sperm lipid composition was modified as follows: alkyl-Gro with saturated chains were increased (C16:0 +40.1%, C18:0 +87.2%) while alkyl-Gro with unsaturated chains remained absent, as in the control group, despite the prominence of C18:1 and C16:1 in shark liver oil. The treatment also resulted in an overall increase in the proportion of n - 3 and n - 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in sperm lipids with a prominent increase of docosahexaenoic acid over time (18.9 +/- 1.34% at Day 0 to 25.7 +/- 1.11% at Day 28) and compared to control (25.7 +/- 1.11% for treated versus 16.1 +6/- 0.81 % for control at Day 28, respectively). These data demonstrate the influence of lipid intake on boar sperm composition and functions and suggest that oral intake of shark liver oil might improve reproduction.  相似文献

Environmental temperature is a critical factor in the lives of almost all organisms. Plants experience periods of thermal stress related to seasonal patterns of temperature and periodic water deficits. Within the range of non-lethal temperatures, there are a number of thermal effects on metabolism that are a result of the thermal dependence of enzymes. The thermal dependence of enzyme kinetic parameters was used to predict that the efficacy of the herbicide pyrithiobac on Palmer amaranth would be reduced at temperatures outside a 20–34°C thermal application range. This prediction is validated in a controlled environment study described in this paper. Palmer amaranth was grown for 16 days in growth chambers with 34/18°C day/night temperature regime. Pyrithiobac was applied to plants at 18, 27 or 40°C. After 1 h at the application temperatures the plants were returned to the 34/18°C regime for 14 days and post-application biomass accumulation (efficacy) was determined. Dry weight accumulation, as a percentage of untreated controls, was 25, 2.5 and 70% for 18, 27 and 40°C application temperatures. Pyrithiobac efficacy was highest for the application within the thermal application range and significantly reduced at temperatures above and below. The validation of the earlier prediction suggests that temperature-related kinetic limitations on herbicide efficacy may also occur in plants with bioengineered herbicide resistance based on herbicide metabolism. The theoretical aspects of such thermal limitations on herbicide resistance mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Mesoplodon perrini , a new species of beaked whale is described on the basis of five animals stranded on the coast of California (between 32°55'N, 117°15'W and 36°37'N, 121°55'W) from May 1975 to September 1997. Four of these animals were initially identified as Hector's beaked whales M. hectori based on cranial morphology (Mead 1981). A fifth specimen was initially identified as a neonate Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris based on external features. These specimens were first recognized as representatives of an undescribed species through phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region and cytochrome b sequence data. Although similar morphologically, the genetic data do not support a close evolutionary relationship between M. perrini and M. hectori . Instead, these data suggest a possible sister species relationship with the lesser beaked whale M. peruvianus . Sightings of two small beaked whales off California in the 1970s which were tentatively identified as M. hectori are also likely to be M. perrini . We suggest that M. hectori is confined to the Southern Hemisphere, while M. perrini is known to date only from the North Pacific.  相似文献
