The effects of Sika deer (Cervus nippon) browsing on the regeneration of pioneer species were studied in relation to canopy gaps in a warm temperate evergreen oak forest in Kasugayama, Nara City. Four study sites, three in canopy gaps and one under a closed canopy, were selected and each divided into fenced and unfenced plots. Under the closed canopy, seedlings of all the pioneer species died irrespective of browsing pressure. However, in the canopy gap sites, seedlings of the pioneer species could establish and grow well. The seedling survival ratio in the fenced plots in the canopy gaps was >60% 1 year after germination. However, in the unfenced plots, only <20% of the seedlings survived 1 year, with all dying within 3 years after germination. Thus, the regeneration of pioneer trees in this forest was strongly inhibited by deer browsing. Successful regeneration of a pioneer,Zanthoxylum ailanthoides, occurred for several years even after two major wind disturbances during the past 90 years. Browsing of tree saplings by deer hampers forest regeneration in mixed forests across Europe and North America. It is well known that tree species are differentially affected by deer browsing, but little is known about how different facets of diversity, such as species richness, identity, and composition, affect browsing intensity at different spatial scales. Using forest inventory data from the Hainich National Park, a mixed deciduous forest in central Germany, we applied a hierarchical approach to model the browsing probability of patches (regional scale) as well as the species‐specific proportion of saplings browsed within patches (patch scale). We found that, at the regional scale, the probability that a patch was browsed increased with certain species composition, namely with low abundance of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and high abundance of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), whereas at the patch scale, the proportion of saplings browsed per species was mainly determined by the species’ identity, providing a “preference ranking” of the 11 tree species under study. Interestingly, at the regional scale, species‐rich patches were more likely to be browsed; however, at the patch scale, species‐rich patches showed a lower proportion of saplings per species browsed. Presumably, diverse patches attract deer, but satisfy nutritional needs faster, such that fewer saplings need to be browsed. Some forest stand parameters, such as more open canopies, increased the browsing intensity at either scale. By showing the effects that various facets of diversity, as well as environmental parameters, exerted on browsing intensity at the regional as well as patch scale, our study advances the understanding of mammalian herbivore–plant interactions across scales. Our results also indicate which regeneration patches and species are (least) prone to browsing and show the importance of different facets of diversity for the prediction and management of browsing intensity and regeneration dynamics.  相似文献

种子是天然更新的基础,幼苗和幼树的生长是天然更新过程中最敏感的阶段。苔藓植物作为许多生态系统的主要地被物,在维管植物天然更新过程中发挥着不容忽视的作用。在许多植被类型中,都有发育良好的苔藓群落,大量的研究证明它们的存在影响到维管植物的萌发、建成和生长,并且可能进一步影响到物种的共生,有一些种类甚至可能指示树种的更新。本文就苔藓植物对物种更新早期阶段的作用和影响进行了综述。包括苔藓植物的生理特性造成的微气候变化;苔藓群落对种子传播、萌发及幼苗建成的影响。并讨论了苔藓植物与更新物种的种间关系及其对幼苗生长的化感作用。  相似文献

Using an exclosure experiment in managed woodland in eastern England, we examined species and guild responses to vegetation growth and its modification by deer herbivory, contrasting winter and the breeding season over 4 years. Species and guild responses, in terms of seasonal presence recorded by multiple point counts, were examined using generalized linear mixed models. Several guilds or migrant species responded positively to deer exclusion and none responded negatively. The shrub‐layer foraging guild was recorded less frequently in older and browsed vegetation, in both winter and spring. Exclusion of deer also increased the occurrence of ground‐foraging species in both seasons, although these species showed no strong response to vegetation age. The canopy‐foraging guild was unaffected by deer exclusion or vegetation age in either season. There was seasonal variation in the responses of some individual resident species, including a significantly lower occurrence of Eurasian Wren Troglodytes troglodytes and European Robin Erithacus rubecula in browsed vegetation in winter, but no effect of browsing on those species in spring. Ordinations of bird assemblage compositions also revealed seasonal differences in response to gradients of vegetation structure generated by canopy‐closure and exclusion of deer. Positive impacts of deer exclusion in winter are probably linked to reduced thermal cover and predator protection afforded by browsed vegetation, whereas species that responded positively in spring were also dependent on a dense understorey for nesting. The effects on birds of vegetation development and its modification by herbivores extend beyond breeding assemblages, with different mechanisms implicated and different species affected in winter.  相似文献

探讨枯枝落叶层对树种天然更新的障碍机制,对于实现天然次生林的科学管理以及采取适当营林措施促进目的树种天然更新具有重要的理论和实践意义.从枯枝落叶层的物理阻断影响 (物理因子)、枯枝落叶层的化感作用(化学因子)、动物侵害和微生物致病(生物因子)等方面,论述了枯枝落叶层对天然更新方面的障碍作用,揭示枯枝落叶层物理阻断对天然更新影响规律,以及主要林型的化感作用与天然更新关系的作用机制.建议今后应加强对不同林型枯枝落叶层的结构、枯枝落叶层下光量子流密度的变化规律以及红光与远红光比值的变化规律等方面研究.  相似文献

林隙对小兴安岭阔叶红松林树种更新及物种多样性的影响   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
研究了小兴安岭阔叶红松林不同林隙梯度(林隙中心、林隙近中心、林隙边缘)中主要树种的数量特征,以及林隙大小对树种更新的影响.结果表明:不同梯度林隙内灌木树种的密度均明显高于非林隙,同种灌木密度的比值在1.08~18.15之间;随林隙面积增加,乔木幼苗更新密度逐渐增大,幼树Ⅰ(高度H≥1 m,胸径DBH≤2 cm)和幼树Ⅱ(H≥1 m,2 cm<DBH≤5 cm)的更新密度呈多峰曲线.林隙灌木总体更新密度主要随幼苗和幼树Ⅰ数量而变化.林隙内不同位置幼苗的平均树高、平均基径、种密度和个体密度有所差异.从林隙中心到非林隙,更新层乔木幼苗重要值的大小顺序为:林隙中心>林隙近中心>林隙边缘>非林隙;物种均匀度呈高-低-高的变化,物种多样性的变化为早期林隙>中期林隙>晚期林隙.  相似文献

针对大兴安岭北坡林区森林植被在不同火烧强度、火烧时间的火烧迹地上的恢复状况进行了调查研究。结果表明,轻度火烧区的植被自然更新恢复良好;中度火烧区的森林植被依靠人工促进更新要比自然更新更早达到预期目标;重度火烧区的森林植被如果完全依靠自然更新,恢复到预期目标会非常缓慢,而通过人工更新则可跨越几个演替阶段,较快接近本地的顶极群落。  相似文献

Plant parasitism and herbivory are common phenomena in natural grasslands, where they may significantly affect competition between plant species. However, only few studies have simultaneously examined these two processes. We investigated whether the root hemiparasite Odontites litoralis ssp. litoralis affects the outcome of competition between two clonal graminoids, the endangered Puccinellia phryganodes and the common species Agrostis stolonifera, and whether simulated grazing affects the interaction among these three species. This study system simulates the community of early successional stages of the Bothnian Bay salt marsh meadows, which are intensively grazed by greylag geese (Anser anser). We conducted a factorial greenhouse experiment to study the effects of interspecific competition (one or two host species present), hemiparasitic infection (hemiparasite present or not), and simulated grazing (host clipped or not) on Puccinellia and Agrostis. Puccinellia was clearly an inferior competitor to Agrostis, whereas the two species did not differ as hosts for the hemiparasite. Infection by the hemiparasite reduced the aboveground biomass of Puccinellia and Agrostis by 59% and 45%, respectively. Competition with Agrostis decreased the biomass of parasitised Puccinellia by 36% and that of non-parasitised Puccinellia by 56%. Parasitism thus seemed to benefit Puccinellia indirectly by decreasing the relative competitive advantage of Agrostis. Moreover, parasitism increased the relative contribution of Puccinellia to the total aboveground host plant biomass. Simulated grazing decreased the aboveground biomass of Agrostis significantly more than that of Puccinellia and thus increased the competitive ability of Puccinellia. Simulated grazing of the two host species did not affect the performance of Odontites. These results suggest that both hemiparasitic plants and herbivory may play a significant role in the maintenance of plant species diversity by promoting competitively inferior species.  相似文献

种子植物的自然更新过程是20世纪70年代以来生态学领域研究的热点问题之一。对影响种子植物更新过程因子的研究主要涉及3个阶段,即种子生产、种子运动(主要为种子扩散的过程)和种子萌发、幼苗建成以及幼树生长到成树。一些完整的理论和实验模型被提出。反过来模型的研究促进了野外研究的进一步发展。关于种子植物更新的定性模型和定量模型陆续被提出,定量研究种子植物的更新过程将成为主要的发展方向。本文综述了近年来关于种子植物更新过程的3个较为完整的定性模型,即Chambers等的种子命运模型、Clark等的补充限制模型和Nathan等的时空模型,以及2个定量模型,即Vander和Boehning等的种子扩散模型。  相似文献

植物自然更新是一个复杂的生态学过程,它对种群的增殖、扩散、延续和群落稳定及演替具有重要的作用,是植被动态研究的热点。目前国内外在这方面的多数研究主要从更新过程中的某一或几个阶段入手,分析各生态因子对更新的影响,或从林窗、火烧、动物等干扰对自然更新影响的角度揭示植被自然更新的机制。本文从植物自然更新方式、干扰对更新的影响及群落的更新等方面进行了总结,并提出了今后该领域的研究建议。  相似文献

Attempts were made to study the effect of thidiazuron (TDZ) on adventitious shoot induction and plant development in Paulownia tomentosa explants derived from mature trees. Media with different concentrations of TDZ in combination with an auxin were used to induce adventitious shoot-buds in two explant types: basal leaf halves with the petiole attached (leaf explant) and intact petioles. Optimal shoot regeneration was obtained in leaf explants cultured on induction medium containing TDZ (22.7 or 27.3 μM) in combination with 2.9 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) for 2 weeks, and subsequent culture in TDZ-free shoot development medium including 0.44 μM BA for a further 4-week period. The addition of IAA to the TDZ induction medium enhanced the shoot-forming capacity of explants. The caulogenic response varied significantly with the position of the explant along the shoot axis. The highest regeneration potential (85–87%) and shoot number (up to 17.6 shoots/explant) were obtained in leaf explants harvested from the most apical node exhibiting unfolded leaves (node 1). An analogous trend was also observed in intact petiole explants, although shoot regeneration ability was considerably lower, with values ranging from 15% for petioles isolated from node 1 to 5% for those of nodes 2 and 3. Shoot formation capacity was influenced by the genotype, with regeneration frequencies ranging from 50% to 70%. It was possible to root elongated shoots (20 mm) in basal medium without growth regulators; however, rooting frequency was significantly increased up to 90% by a 7-day treatment with 0.5 μM indole-3-butyric acid, regardless of the previous culture period in shoot development medium (4 or 8 weeks). Shoot quality of rooted plantlets was improved not only by IBA treatment but also by using material derived from the 4-week culture period. Regenerated plantlets were successfully acclimatized in the greenhouse 8 weeks after transplanting.  相似文献

The ability of saplings to tolerate browsing (i.e. the ability to persist with reduced biomass and to compensate for biomass loss) is influenced by the level of stress and their growth strategies. Ultimately, insight into species‐specific responses of saplings to browsing, shade and competition from neighbours will help explain diversity, structure and function of grazed ecosystems such as the endangered wood‐pasture systems. We measured the survival, whole‐sapling biomass and compensatory growth responses of two coniferous (Picea abies and Abies alba) and two deciduous (Acer pseudoplatanus and Fagus sylvatica) tree species to simulated summer browsing (one single clipping event), shade (installation of a shade cloth) and neighbour removal (mowing surrounding vegetation to ground level) treatments and the interactions between them after two‐growing seasons. For all species, there were interacting effects on growth of browsing and environmental condition (shade and neighbours). Simulated browsing resulted in relatively smaller growth losses when plants were growing slowly due to competitive conditions related to herbaceous neighbours. Although none of the clipped saplings could fully compensate for their biomass losses, the saplings were closer to compensation under high competitive conditions than under low competitive conditions. Survival of the clipped saplings remained relatively high and was only significantly reduced for Picea and Acer. Picea was least tolerant of competition and was the only species for which growth was not negatively affected by strong irradiance of a mountain pasture. Surprisingly, the tolerance of saplings to herbivory as browsing tolerance was enhanced under conditions that negatively affected sapling performance (i.e. survival and growth). Apparently, the relative impact of browsing at the early sapling stage is linked to tree life history characteristics such as competition and shade tolerance and will be lower in situations with intense competitive interactions and/or strong irradiance.  相似文献

We induced somatic embryogenesis from the cotyledon segments ofOlea europaea (L) cvs. ‘Chetoui’, ‘Chemleli’, and ‘Arbequina’. Calli were established from all three cultvars on OMc media supplemented with IBA and 2i-R The greatest success was obtained with media that contained zero or low concentrations of growth regulators. High levels of hormones (i.e.,>0.5 mgL-1 IBA and 2i-P) inhibited embryogenesis. Embryos at different maturation stages were observed with continuously proliferating secondary embryogenesis. Abnormally shaped embryos and teratoma were also noted. Four weeks was the optimal incubation period for inducing embryogenesis on the auxin-containing medium. In addition, 30 to 40 gL-1 sucrose was more effective than glucose in stimulating the growth and maturation of somatic embryos. Embryogeic efficiency was also higher when multivariate combinations of nitrogen sources (inorganic and organic nitrogen forms) were used. The plantlets that were derived from our germinating somatic embryos were similar to those obtained from axillary buds.  相似文献

Regenerable maize calli of two inbred lines were exposed to 0 to 100 Gy of gamma rays or treated with 0 to 30 mM of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) to determine their effect on growth and plant regeneration capability. Both growth and plant regeneration capacity decreased with increasing levels of either gamma radiation or ENU; however, plant regeneration capacity was more sensitive to either agent than growth. The 50% inhibition dose (I50) for callus growth (fresh-weight gain) was approximately 100 Gy of gamma radiation and 30 mM ENU. The I50 for plant regeneration capacity of treated callus was approximately 25 Gy of gamma radiation and 2.5 mM ENU. The decrease in plant regeneration capacity correlated with a change in tissue composition of the treated callus from a hard, yellow and opaque tissue to a soft, grayish-yellow and translucent tissue. This change was quantified by measuring the reduction of MnO4 - to MnO2 (PR assay) by the callus. These results suggest that the effect of gamma radiation or ENU on plant regeneration capacity must be taken into consideration if these potentially mutagenic agents are to be used on maize callus cultures, for the purpose of producing useful mutations at a whole plant level. 喀斯特生境与生物多样性的关系及其对人为干扰的响应是喀斯特地区生态恢复的重要内容。该文以云南石林为例对此进行研究。根据喀斯特溶痕与土壤、植物生长发育关系把石林的溶痕生境划分为溶蚀廊道、溶槽、裂隙溶沟、溶坑和溶蚀石堆等5种。依据石林的现有植被与演替特征, 选择了原生林、次生林、灌丛、灌草丛和石漠化草丛5种群落进行调查。在每一个样地中设置10个10 m × 10 m的样方, 采用记名计数样方法分片调查溶痕生境中的木本植物, 并区分更新层的萌生苗与实生苗; 采用Shannon-Wiener指数、Pielou指数、Simpson指数、Margalef指数进行生物多样性计算。调查结果显示: (1)溶痕生境的长度、宽度变化较大。溶痕生境结构比例随群落演替而变化, 其原因可能在于所处演替阶段和干扰程度的差异; (2) 在各种溶痕生境中, 随着群落的退化, 实生更新物种数与实生株数大致表现为递减, 在严重退化阶段部分溶痕生境中没有实生苗的分布, 而萌生更新的物种数则以灌丛为峰值向两极减少, 个体数变化较大。计算结果显示: 在各类溶痕生境(溶蚀石堆除外)中, 实生苗的多样性、丰富度、均匀度大致呈现随群落的退化而降低, 优势度增加; 萌生苗多样性、均匀度、丰富度除溶蚀廊道递减的趋势明显外, 其他类型变化较大。不同演替阶段植物更新策略不同。在喀斯特森林生态系统中, 随着群落的退化, 植物更新逐步趋向于营养繁殖, 其部分原因在于特殊的溶痕生境(除溶蚀廊道)能保存一些植物残体, 而这些残体在反复的干扰下不断萌出茎干(采用营养繁殖)以实现物种的持续生态位, 萌生茎干的成熟为生物多样性维持与生态恢复提供繁殖体来源。  相似文献

Aging is characterized by reduced tissue regenerative capacity attributed to a diminished responsiveness of tissue‐specific stem cells. With increasing age, resident precursor cells in muscle tissues show a markedly impaired propensity to proliferate in response to damage. However, exposure to factors present in the serum of young mice restores the regenerative capacity of aged precursor cells. As pregnancy represents a unique biological model of a partially shared blood system between young and old organisms, we hypothesized that pregnancy in aged mice would have a rejuvenating effect on the mother. To test this hypothesis, we assessed muscle regeneration in response to injury in young and aged pregnant and nonpregnant mice. Muscle regeneration in the aged pregnant mice was improved relative to that in age‐matched nonpregnant mice. The beneficial effect of pregnancy was transient, lasting up to 2 months after delivery, and appeared to be attributable to activation of satellite cells via the Notch signaling pathway, thus supporting the possibility that pregnancy induces activation of aged dormant muscle progenitor cells.  相似文献

The measurement of total soil organic matter (SOM) is not sensitive enough to detect short and medium term changes, and thus meaningful fractions of SOM should be measured. The carbon management index (CMI) was shown to be a useful technique for describing soil fertility. Soil samples were collected from natural evergreen broadleaved forest and its artificial regeneration forests of Sassafras tzumu, Cryptomeria fortunei and Metasequoia glyptostroboides in southern Sichuan Province, China, to determine soil carbon fractions, available nutrients, enzyme activity and CMI. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between soil carbon fractions, CMI and fertility. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon, water-soluble carbon, microbial biomass carbon, labile carbon, non-labile carbon, hydrolysis-N, available-P and available-K, the activity of invertase, phosphatase and catalase, and CMI were ranked with different seasons and followed the order: natural evergreen broadleaved forest > Sassafras tzumu plantation > Metasequoia glyptostroboides plantation > Cryptomeria fortunei plantation. The soil carbon fractions and CMI were significantly positively (P < 0.05) correlated with available nutrients and enzyme activity. The results indicate that soil carbon fractions and CMI could be used to evaluate the soil fertility for natural evergreen broadleaved forest and its artificial regeneration forests.  相似文献
