Adult female populations of Haemagogus leucocelaenus (Dyar and Shannon), the sylvan vector of yellow fever, were monitored weekly during 1981–82 by human collectors on the ground at Point Gourde in Chaguaramas Forest, 16 km west of Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Hg.leucocelaenus showed only diurnal landing activity, from 06.00 to 18.00 hours (sunrise to sunset, universal time), with a single peak of activity between 10.00 and 14.00 hours.
Densities of Hg.leucocelaenus during the wet season (May–November) were about double the level recorded during the dry season (December–April).
Monthly parous rates averaged 53.9% (range 25–90%) and some females were up to five-pars. Retained eggs (range 2–6, mean 4/female) were found in the ovaries of 0.34% of landing females, all of which had stage 1 ovarian follicles for the next gonotrophic cycle. Therefore blood-feeding is not inhibited by egg retention. Hg. leucocelaenus vector potential is reappraised in the light of these findings.  相似文献

Abstract. The mosquito Haemagogus equinus is a known vector of yellow fever (YF) in central America. Seasonal abundance, daily biting activity and the age composition of adult Hg. equinus female populations were monitored weekly during 1981–82 by human collectors on the ground at Point Gourde Forest, Chaguaramas, 16 km west of Port of Spain, Trinidad. 2. Landing collections of Hg.equinus showed diurnal activity from 06.00 to 20.00 hours (suntime), with a single peak between 08.00 and 14.00 hours. 3. Overall, 5.6% of Hg.equinus were collected during the dry season (December-April) and 94.4% during the wet season (May-November). 4. Mean density of Hg.equinus in relation to man ranged from 0.35/man-day in February to 133/man-day in July, with averages of 2.8 in the wet season, 36.9 in the dry season and 22/man-day for the whole year. 5. Monthly parous rates averaged 62.1% (range 0-88%); 2.8% of females were 2-pars, another 2.8% were 3-pars, but no older females of Hg.equinus were found (sample size 467). 6. These age-grading data indicate that Hg.equinus females have relatively short life expectancy and hence low vector potential, which may help to explain why YF virus has seldom been isolated from this vector species.  相似文献

In 2000, an outbreak of sylvatic yellow fever possibly occurred in gallery forests of the Grande river in the Paraná basin in the northwestern region of S?o Paulo state. The aim of this study was to obtain information on the bionomics of Haemagogus and other mosquitoes inside tree holes in that area. Eighteen open tree holes were sampled for immature specimens. Adults were collected twice a month in the forest in Santa Albertina county from July 2000 to June 2001. The seasonal frequency of fourth instars was obtained by the Williams geometric mean (Mw), while the adult frequency was estimated either by hourly arithmetic or the Williams' means. Cole's index was applied to evaluate larval inter-specific associations. Among the ten mosquito species identified, the most abundant was Aedes terrens Walker followed by Sabethes tridentatus Cerqueira and Haemagogus janthinomys Dyar. Larval and adult abundance of these species was higher in summer than in winter. Although larval abundance of Hg. janthinomys peaked in the rainy season, correlation with rainfall was not significant. Six groups of larval associations were distinguished, one of which the most positively stable. The Hg. janthinomys and Ae. terrens association was significant, and Limatus durhamii Theobald was the species with most negative associations.  相似文献

Between July 1980 and February 1984, six jaguars (two males, four females) were fitted with radio-collars and monitored for a cumulative total of 105 months, in the Pantanal region of southwestern Brazil. Mean home range size (minimum convex polygon) for five of them (one male, four females) was 142- 1 km2. Mean home range size during the dry season was 54·3 km2, whereas in the wet season it was significantly smaller, 12·8 km2. Mean home range overlap of the four females was 42%. Use of gallery forest and forest patches exceeded the availability of these habitat types in the animals' home ranges, whereas open forest and grassland were used less than expected on the basis of their availability. Mean distance moved between locations on consecutive days was 2·4 km (0.2-10·4 km). The mean one-day movement of the male jaguar was significantly (P<0·001) larger than that of the females. Mean distance travelled by all animals during one-day intervals in the dry season was significantly greater (P<0·001) than that travelled in other months. Jaguars were more active during daytime than night-time (P<0·001). Overall level of activity for the wet season did not differ from that of the dry season. With their larger body size, jaguars in the Pantanal may require more food than jaguars in other areas of the species' range. This, in addition to differences in prey availability and the annual availability of dry land, appear to influence the difference in home range size between jaguar populations.  相似文献

The risk of acquiring malaria transmitted by Anopheles baimaii Sallum & Peyton, 2005, formerly known as An. dirus species D (Sallum et al., 2005) (Diptera: Culicidae), at different hours of the night in a forest-fringed village of Assam, North-east India was assessed through all-night mosquito landing catches during 1995-2000. An estimated overall mean biting rate of 36.1 bites/person/night (95% CI = 26.2-45.8), a sporozoite rate of 1.9% (95% CI = 1.1-2.9%) and a parous rate of 58.7% (95% CI = 55.3-62.0%) were recorded. Parous and sporozoite-positive females tended to be caught mainly before midnight. The effective entomological inoculation rate was the highest (0.249 positive bites/person/night) from 21.00 to 24.00 hours, suggesting that the second quartile of the night is the most risky period for malaria transmission by An. baimaii. Considering that approximately 21% of mean inoculations take place before 21.00 hours, it appears that there is a need for appropriate protective measures during the pre-bed time period to supplement the impact of insecticide-treated nets against An. baimaii in north-east India.  相似文献

Field investigations on the sandfly Phlebotomus orientalis (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vector of Leishmania donovani causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Sudan, were undertaken in two villages (Bellow and Elgamel) and Dinder National Park, to determine the protective value of bednets (polyester, 100 denier) impregnated with lambda-cyhalothrin 10 mg a.i./m2 pyrethroid insecticide. After exposure to treated netting for 30 s, P. orientalis females all died within 1 h. When field-tested in Acacia woodland, treated bednets provided complete protection from bites of the vector. Numbers of P. orientalis females landing on human collectors without bednets or using untreated bednets averaged 32.0 +/- 8.3 or 6.9 +/- 2.7 per man-night, respectively, whereas collectors using treated bednets experienced no sandfly bites during the same period (18.00-06.00 hours, 12 nights in June 1995). Socio-behavioural observations on the bed-time of people living in both study villages indicated that the use of impregnated bednets against P. orientalis would give more potential protection for women and children than for male adults. Overall the proportions of people and their durations of exposure to the risk of sandfly bites (i.e. after sunset until they went to bed) were 40% unprotected for< 1h, 50% for 1-2h and >10% for > or = 2h. Because visceral leishmaniasis in Sudan occurs mainly in children, the use of impregnated bednets (outdoors as well as indoors), and going to bed early could provide a high degree of personal protection against this zoonotic infection.  相似文献

Abstract. For two sibling species of mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex of malaria vectors, the effects of body size (wing length) and bloodmeal size (haematin excretion) on fecundity of wild females were investigated in The Gambia, West Africa. Freshly blood-fed individuals from sympatric populations of An.arabiensis and An.gambiae sensu stricto were sampled by collection at 07.00–09.00 hours from within bednets during July/August 1993, at the beginning of the rainy season. The possible confounding effect of infection with Plasmodium parasites was removed by eliminating infected mosquitoes from the study samples. An.arabiensis females comprised 75% of the An.gambiae sensu law population and were significantly larger (greater mean wing length) than those of An.gambiae s.s. mosquitoes. Mean egg production per female (for the subsequent gonotrophic cycle, excluding pre-gravids) for the two species was not significantly different, though the relationship between wing length and egg production showed An.gambiae s.s. to be more fecund than the An.arabiensis of the same size. Pre-gravid An.gambiae s.s. had consumed significandy smaller bloodmeals than gravid females but the mean wing length of these two gonotrophic categories was not significantly different. In contrast, An.arabiensis pre-gravids were smaller and had consumed smaller bloodmeals than the gravids.  相似文献

Field metabolic rates and daily movement distances were measured in 26 individual kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis) over a 29-mo period in the southern Mojave Desert of California. Kit foxes traveled long distances (up to 32 km d(-1)), with males usually traveling farther than females. Daily movement distances were affected by season, since males traveled the greatest distances in spring and females traveled farthest in summer. Individual foxes tracked multiple times demonstrated repeatability of daily movement distance between nights, between summer and winter, and between consecutive winters. The field cost of activity per unit distance was estimated as 15.6 kJ km(-1) from the partial regression coefficient of a multiple linear regression model, a value not significantly different from the incremental cost of locomotion derived from laboratory measurements. The field cost of activity was not affected by season, despite the expectation of higher costs of activity in the winter with increased thermoregulatory expenditure. The large daily movement distances resulted in significant activity energy expenditure (11%-33% of field metabolic rate), with a mean of 21% of field metabolic rate expended in activity during nonreproductive seasons.  相似文献

We present the results from a radiotelemetric study on space use and activity in a natural population of the wood lemming Myopus schisticolor. Male home ranges were larger than females, and the ratio female home range to male home range was smaller than expected compared to other small rodents. Males moved distances 4-12 times longer than females. We argue that this difference in mobility gives a higher probability of capturing males than females in snap trap studies. If there is a sex biased trappability, this might explain the increasing female biased sex ratio during the snow free season (1:1 in spring, 3:1 [female:male| in autumn), as a higher mortality of males during the reproductive season.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in ovulatory activity, assessed by the measurement of plasma progesterone and plasma prolactin concentrations were monitored in 10 Spanish ibex females captured in the National Wildlife Reserve of Sierra Nevada (South Spain, 37 degrees N). Five of the 10 female ibex showed ovulatory activity with a mean (+/- s.e.m.) duration of the oestrous cycle of 19.4 +/- 1 days (range: 17-23 days). On average, the five cyclic females weighed 28 +/- 0.9 kg. Progesterone cycles occurred only in animals older than 4 years of age. Ovulatory activity extended from December to January. The duration of the breeding season was 43.2 +/- 7.7 days. Ibex females younger than 4 years of age had a body weight lower (P < 0.01 ) than that of adults and none of them displayed ovulations. Plasma concentrations of prolactin levels were significantly affected by season (P < 0.05), following a trend that was roughly parallel to daylength. The highest values occurred in the spring (119.7 +/- 21.4 ng x mL(-1)) and the summer (139.3 +/- 19.8 ng x mL(-1)), the lowest values in the autumn (26 +/- 7.4 ng x mL(-1)) and in the winter (19.7 +/- 3.2 ng x mL(-1)). Our results showed a very restricted breeding season, despite the fact that the Spanish ibex originates from and lives in a temperate latitude, revealing a remarkably good adaptation to the harsh climatic and nutritional conditions of their mountainous habitat.  相似文献

The propensity of the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) to ingest sugars from various plants, and subsequent survival rates, were assessed with laboratory-reared males and females offered eight species of plants commonly cultivated and/or growing wild in western Kenya. In cages (no-choice bioassay), mosquitoes given the opportunity to feed on castorbean (Ricinus communis L.) had the longest survival times (mean and median survival time of 6.99 +/- 0.23 and 5.67 +/- 0.17 days, respectively), comparable to mosquitoes given 6% glucose (mean and median survival time of 8.70 +/- 0.23 and 6.67 +/- 0.33 days, respectively). Survival rates of An. gambiae were low on the other plants, comparable to mosquitoes given only water. Three plants: sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.), wild sage (Lantana camara L.) and castorbean provided levels of sugar ingestion by both sexes of An. gambiae detectable using the cold anthrone method, showing a positive correlation between median survival and sugar consumption (Spearman rank correlation coefficient = 0.905, P < 0.0001). Equal numbers of males and females were released in an enclosed semi-field screenhouse system containing a range of local plants, but no host for blood, and allowed to feed ad libitum: 6.7 +/- 0.5% (11/64) of those recaptured were found to contain detectable fructose (all females). Common plants are clearly a viable source of nutrition for adult female An. gambiae, as well as males, and may constitute and important resource for this important malaria vector.  相似文献

Camels are said to be seasonal breeders, but the extent to which season interferes with food supply to affect ovarian function is not fully documented. Hence, the three aims of this study were: (1) to define the breeding season of camels maintained in semi-arid conditions in southern Morocco; (2) to relate the proportion of females with active ovaries (i.e., with follicles > 5 mm), with ovulatory (11-17 mm) or cystic (> 18 mm) follicles to age and body conditions score; (3) to study the consequences of the interactions between age and body conditions score on the proportion of females ovulating and conceiving; and (4) to compare follicular maturation, using in vitro steroidogenesis by intact follicles as a marker during the transition into the breeding season (October) and peak breeding season (March). There was a clear breeding season in the two flocks studied, since over 80-90% of the matings occurred during the period from mid-November to mid-April. Collection of ovaries at slaughter (n = 238) demonstrated a significant seasonal effect on the proportion of females with active ovaries (increasing from 73.5% in October-December to 89% in January-May), but no changes in the proportion of females with ovulatory follicles. Lean females (BCS < 2.5) had a delayed initiation of ovarian function in October-December. In addition, the proportion of females with cystic follicles was also affected by season (peaking during April-May). Neither age nor body condition modulated the frequency of cysts. Finally, the proportion of females conceiving increased steadily as season progressed (peaking at 57% in April-May). Body condition score did not affect this proportion, but young females (< or = 5 years old) had a low ability to conceive. Morphological features of large follicles were unaffected by season. Ovulatory follicles contained around 10(7) granulosa and theca cells. In vitro testosterone output by intact follicles was unrelated to follicle size and season. In vitro oestradiol output increased with increasing follicle size and was larger in follicles obtained during peak breeding season than at its initiation. This may indicate that early breeding season follicles display a low aromatase activity in their granulosa cells. Whether the low oestradiol output of early breeding season follicles is resulting in the low fertility observed at this period remains to be determined.  相似文献

The Gulf of Paria receives heavy metal input from urban runoff, industrial and agricultural activity, sewage and domestic wastes: both from the west coast and from inland areas of Trinidad. Non-residual concentrations of nine metals, as well as total mercury concentrations, were used to determine spatial distributions of heavy metals in sediments in the Gulf of Paria. Surficial sediment samples were collected at 37 stations, which included the mouths of 11 major rivers that flow into the Gulf of Paria. Stations were sampled twice during the wet season (July 1998 and November/ December 1998) and twice during the dry season (March 1999 and April 1999). Sediments were analyzed for aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and mercury (Hg). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and grain size analyses were also performed on the sediments. Principal component analysis showed that sediments from river mouths subject to greatest land use and anthropogenic input, were distinct from other sediments in the Gulf of Paria. This was due to higher Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg concentrations (3.53-73.30 microg g(-1), 45.8-313.9 microg g(-1), 8.43-39.71 microg g(-1) and 0.03-0.10 microg g(-1), respectively). Sediments further from the coast were also distinct due to their higher Al, Fe, Cr and Mn concentrations (1.37-3.16 mg g(-1), 9.51-18.91 mg g(-1) , 17.22-28.41 microg g(-1) and 323.6-1,564.2 microg g(-1), respectively). Cd and Pb were higher in the wet season while Ni was higher in the dry season. Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg were correlated with each other and with TOC. Correlation was also observed between Al, Fe, Cr, Mn and Ni. Al, Fe, Cr and Mn were correlated with percentage clay in sediments. The results suggest that Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg are preferentially removed by organic matter, which settles at the river-mouths, while Al, Fe, Cr, Mn, and Ni become associated with clay minerals and are transported away from the coast.  相似文献

This study examined the onset of estrus, nutritional conditions during the mating season, and female reproductive parameters in a troop of unprovisioned Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata). The mean interbirth interval (IBI) was 25.1 mo, suggesting a 2-yr birth cycle. The mean IBI following the death of an infant before the mating season was only 19.8 mo, whereas the mean IBI was 27.8 mo when the infant survived. Estrus occurred during the time of the greatest food quality, in the autumn (i.e., mating season). A female whose infant did not survive the mating season tended to come into estrus more readily than one with a surviving infant. Only one of the 19 females whose infants survived came into estrus, whereas 43 of the 58 (74.1%) females whose infants did not survive came into estrus. Fruit conditions during the mating season each year were evaluated by the seed crop of the two species (Fagus crenata and Zelkova serrata) that constituted the main food source for the macaques; fruiting levels were classified as "high-fruit" or "low-fruit." Females came into estrus more often during high-fruit mating seasons than during low-fruit mating seasons: 36 (97.3%) of 37 females came into estrus during high-fruit mating seasons, whereas eight (20%) of 40 females came into estrus during low-fruit mating seasons. Although females came into estrus under both high- and low-fruit conditions during the mating season, estrus seldom occurred when females had a surviving infant, and it appears that the absence of a surviving infant is an almost essential variable for the onset of estrus. When females with a surviving infant were excluded from the analysis because they were unlikely to come into estrus, all 35 remaining females (100%) came into estrus during high-fruit mating seasons, whereas only eight (34.8%) of 23 females came into estrus during low-fruit mating seasons. Therefore, the onset of estrus is strongly affected not only by the survival of infants through the mating season, but also by fruiting conditions, especially the availability of high-quality food.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in Zimbabwe of the responses of tsetse to cattle treated with deltamethrin applied to the parts of the body where most tsetse were shown to land. Large proportions of Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) landed on the belly ( approximately 25%) and legs ( approximately 70%), particularly the front legs ( approximately 50%). Substantial proportions of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood landed on the legs ( approximately 50%) and belly (25%), with the remainder landing on the torso, particularly the flanks ( approximately 15%). Studies were made of the knockdown rate of wild, female G. pallidipes exposed to cattle treated with a 1% pour-on or 0.005% suspension concentrate of deltamethrin applied to the (a) whole body, (b) belly and legs, (c) legs, (d) front legs, (e) middle and lower front legs, or (f) lower front legs. The restricted treatments used 20%, 10%, 5%, 2% or 1% of the active ingredient applied in the whole-body treatments. There was a marked seasonal effect on the performance of all treatments. With the whole-body treatment, the persistence period (knockdown > 50%) ranged from approximately 10 days during the hot, wet season (mean daily temperature > 30 degrees C) to approximately 20 days during the cool, dry season (< 22 degrees C). Restricting the application of insecticide reduced the seasonal persistence periods to approximately 10-15 days if only the legs and belly were treated, approximately 5-15 days if only the legs were treated and < 5 days for the more restricted treatments. The restricted application did not affect the landing distribution of tsetse or the duration of landing bouts (mean = 30 s). The results suggest that more cost-effective control of tsetse could be achieved by applying insecticide to the belly and legs of cattle at 2-week intervals, rather than using the current practice of treating the whole body of each animal at monthly intervals. This would cut the cost of insecticide by 40%, improve efficacy by 27% and reduce the threats to non-target organisms and the enzootic stability of tick-borne diseases.  相似文献

The home range behaviour and habitat selection by Red deer ( Cervus elaphus L. ) in a mixed-age Sitka spruce plantation was studied from1979–82 using radio-telemetry. Females used areas with rides, young replanted and pre-thicket crops, older stands where there were checked trees, more in proportion to availability than old closed-canopy stands, open-hill ground and high-elevation newly-established forest. They used open areas more at night, dusk and dawn, and the more secluded thickets during the day. Compared to females, young males were found more in older stands, high-altitude young plantation and on open-hill ground.
Home range size (406–1008 ha for females and1062–3059 ha for males) was smaller for animals with a high proportion of favourable habitats in their range, although larger range size did not incorporate a higher total area of favourable habitat. Individual ranges overlapped.
Females used the same range from season to season and from year to year. Intensity of range usage is discussed. Males dispersed a mean distance of 15 km from their area of capture during their first or second year of age. One young male used different areas each season after dispersal. Females centred their activity in the same river catchment from season to season, but male activity centres changed from one catchment to another.
Comparison is made with the results of studies of habitat selection in the same forest using dung-accumulation techniques, and with the ranging behaviour of Red deer on open-hill ground.  相似文献

Monthly collections of hibernating little brown bats contained (1) nulliparous females with small uteri and no antral follicles, (2) nulliparous females with swollen uteri and mature follicles, and (3) parous females, which, despite obvious differences in reproductive status, had equivalent plasma progesterone values. During the principal study season, mean monthly progesterone concentrations (measured by radioimmunoassay) showed recurrent increases with an apparent periodicity of about 60 days, but limited data obtained in the subsequent season did not. However, comparison of activity patterns in the two seasons with monthly progesterone concentrations suggests that ovarian activity during hibernation is affected by variations in metabolic level. We saw no evidence that nulliparous bats with small uteri developed antral follicles during hibernation. Despite their apparent immaturity, however, they had cornified vaginae and most were demonstrably inseminated. These indications of oestrus and the lack of differences between their plasma progesterone concentrations and those of patently mature females suggest that they were physiologically post-pubertal but failed to complete folliculogenesis before entering hibernation.  相似文献

Abstract: Despite outnumbering their temperate counterparts, tropical snake species have been poorly studied. Yet, the few tropical species that have been studied show a variety of behavioural traits beyond those described in temperate species. Here we reveal both age and sexual differences in the movements of tropical green pythons (Morelia viridis: Pythonidae). We radio‐tracked 27 individuals (17 females and 10 males) for up to 18 months, locating individuals during both the day and night. The home range size for adult females (mean ± SE of 6.21 ± 1.85 ha) was correlated with snout–vent length. Neither adult males nor juveniles had a stable home range. Adult females had stable home ranges that overlapped considerably with those of other females and yellow individuals. Multiple radio‐tracked adult males passed through the territory of radio‐tracked adult females during the study. Females of all sizes were more likely to change position each day than males. There were no differences between the sexes or size categories in the distances moved in most months, although the variation in movement distances was higher in the dry season than during the wet season. In the wet season (January–March) movement distances increased and these were size‐ and sex‐related. This increased activity may be associated with mate searching. Males of M. viridis may maximize their rate of encountering mature females by roaming rather than maintaining a home range. Juvenile green pythons moved distances equal to adult snakes in most months despite their comparatively small size.  相似文献

We assessed temporal variation in mercury (Hg) concentrations of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from Agattu Island, Aleutian Archipelago, Alaska. Total Hg concentrations in whole-bodied stickleback were measured at two-week intervals from two sites in each of two lakes from June 1 to August 10, 2011 during the time period when lakes were ice-free. Across all sites and sampling events, stickleback Hg concentrations ranged from 0.37–1.07 µg/g dry weight (dw), with a mean (± SE) of 0.55±0.01 µg/g dw. Mean fish Hg concentrations declined by 9% during the study period, from 0.57±0.01 µg/g dw in early June to 0.52±0.01 µg/g dw in mid-August. Mean fish Hg concentrations were 6% higher in Loon Lake (0.56±0.01 µg/g dw) than in Lake 696 (0.53±0.01 µg/g dw), and 4% higher in males (0.56±0.01 µg/g dw) than in females (0.54±0.01 µg/g dw). Loon Lake was distinguished from Lake 696 by the presence of piscivorous waterbirds during the breeding season. Mercury concentrations in stickleback from Agattu Island were higher than would be expected for an area without known point sources of Hg pollution, and high enough to be of concern to the health of piscivorous wildlife.  相似文献

Studies on larval population densities and adult emergence rates of the Brugian filariasis vectors Mansonia bonneae Edwards and Ma. dives Schiner were conducted in freshwater swamp forest bordering the Sadong River, Serian District, Sarawak, East Malaysia, during 1984-85. Three species of aquatic host-plants in the Family Araceae were identified as supporting immature stages of the Ma. bonneae/dives complex. Proportions of positive plants were 4.7%, 6.5% and 3.4% with 6.4 +/- 2.6, 7.3 +/- 2.8 and 10.1 +/- 1.1 larvae per positive plant, respectively, for the plant species Homalomena cordata Schott, H. rostrata Griffiths and Hydrostemma motleyi (Hook. f.) Mabberley. These data indicate no significant preferences between the three types of host-plant. Detailed monitoring of the host-plant H. cordata revealed no significant monthly fluctuations in larval density per plant nor the proportion of positive plants. 11.6% of larvae were Ma. dives and 88.4% were Ma. bonneae. Mean daily yields of Ma. bonneae/dives adults per square metre of H. cordata vegetated water surface were 0.45 males plus 0.57 females during the wet season (December-February) compared with 0.2 males plus 0.31 females during the dry season (June-August). Thus output of adults per plant was approximately halved, and suitable breeding areas were further reduced, during the dry season. By extrapolation from these rates, a crude mean estimate for productivity of Ma. bonneae/dives females is 1.6 million per hectare per annum in swamp forest habitats vegetated with any of the host-plants studied.  相似文献
