Arrested embryonic development involves the downregulation or cessation of active cell division and metabolic activity, and the capability of an animal to arrest embryonic development results in temporal plasticity of the duration of embryonic period. Arrested embryonic development is an important reproductive strategy for egg-laying animals that provide no parental care after oviposition. In this review, we discuss each type of embryonic developmental arrest used by oviparous reptiles. Environmental pressures that might have directed the evolution of arrest are addressed and we present previously undiscussed environmentally dependent physiological processes that may occur in the egg to bring about arrest. Areas for future research are proposed to clarify how ecology affects the phenotype of developing embryos. We hypothesize that oviparous reptilian mothers are capable of providing their embryos with a level of phenotypic adaptation to local environmental conditions by incorporating maternal factors into the internal environment of the egg that result in different levels of developmental sensitivity to environmental conditions after they are laid.  相似文献

The decision of females to nest communally has important consequences for reproductive success. While often associated with reduced energetic expenditure, conspecific aggregations also expose females and offspring to conspecific aggression, exploitation, and infanticide. Intrasexual competition pressures are expected to favor the evolution of conditional strategies, which could be based on simple decision rules (i.e., availability of nesting sites and synchronicity with conspecifics) or on a focal individual's condition or status (i.e., body size). Oviparous reptiles that reproduce seasonally and provide limited to no postnatal care provide ideal systems for disentangling social factors that influence different female reproductive tactics from those present in offspring‐rearing environments. In this study, we investigated whether nesting strategies in a West Indian rock iguana, Cyclura nubila caymanensis, vary conditionally with reproductive timing or body size, and evaluated consequences for nesting success. Nesting surveys were conducted on Little Cayman, Cayman Islands, British West Indies for four consecutive years. Use of high‐density nesting sites was increasingly favored up to seasonal nesting activity peaks, after which nesting was generally restricted to low‐density nesting areas. Although larger females were not more likely than smaller females to nest in high‐density areas, larger females nested earlier and gained access to priority oviposition sites. Smaller females constructed nests later in the season, apparently foregoing investment in extended nest defense. Late‐season nests were also constructed at shallower depths and exhibited shorter incubation periods. While nest depth and incubation length had significant effects on reproductive outcomes, so did local nest densities. Higher densities were associated with significant declines in hatching success, with up to 20% of egg‐filled nests experiencing later intrusion by a conspecific. Despite these risks, nests in high‐density areas were significantly more successful than elsewhere due to the benefits of greater chamber depths and longer incubation times. These results imply that communal nest sites convey honest signals of habitat quality, but that gaining and defending priority oviposition sites requires competitive ability.  相似文献

Trypanosomes are digenetic protozoans that infect domestic and wild animals, as well as humans. They cause important medical and veterinary diseases, making them a major public health concern. There are many species of trypanosomes that infect virtually all vertebrate taxa. They typically cycle between insect or leech vectors and vertebrate hosts, and they undergo biochemical and morphological changes in the process. Trypanosomes have received much attention in the last 4 decades because of the diseases they cause and their remarkable armamentarium of immune evasion mechanisms. The completed genome sequences of trypanosomes have revealed an extensive array of molecules that contribute to various immune evasion mechanisms. The different species interact uniquely with their vertebrate hosts with a wide range of evasion strategies and some of the most fascinating immune evasion mechanisms, including antigenic variation that was first described in the trypanosomes. This review focuses on the variety of strategies that these parasites have evolved to evade or modulate immunity of endothermic and ectothermic vertebrates.  相似文献

This article gives an overview of high-cell-density cultures for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production and their modes of operation for increasing productivity. High cell densities are very important in PHA production mainly because this polymer is an intracellular product accumulated in various microorganisms, so a high cellular content is needed for the polymer production. This review describes relevant results from fed-batch, repeated batch, and continuous modes of operation without and with cell recycle for the production of these polymers by microorganisms. Finally, recombinant microorganisms for PHA production, as well future directions for PHA production, are discussed.  相似文献

1. We explored the quantitative contribution of two alternative recolonisation strategies by a combination of experimental and field data from the Little Tallahatchie floodplain (Mississippi, U.S.A.). In this area, several floods of short duration occur in winter and spring. During floods, lentic and lotic waterbodies of different size are connected for a limited period. 2. Shortly before the onset of the flood season we collected sediment samples from six temporary ponds. The emergence of seven cyclopoid species was recorded from the experimentally flooded sediments and was quantified over a 4‐week period. Water samples were taken in the same ponds after flooding, from which eight further species were recorded and quantified. 3. The contribution of flood‐dispersed individuals was variable among flooded ponds (between 38 and 94%), but numbers of flood‐dispersed colonists did not differ significantly from those of hatching individuals in flooded ponds. Our results demonstrate the equal importance of both hydrological connections and hatching from dormant stages as pathways for recolonisation by copepods if ponds are hydrologically connected. 4. The significance of recolonisation by hatching individuals in disconnected waterbodies was apparent in an isolated temporary pond that was exclusively recolonised by cyclopoid copepods emerging from the sediment.  相似文献

This is a review of some of the literature on the use of chromosome techniques with fish. There is a need for developing methods which leave the animal alive. Such a test is the leukocyte culture method used in human medicine. Once a reliable test has been developed the results should show more consistent karyotypes and better morphology thus providing information of use in cytotaxonomy, fish-breeding and in studying the effects of sub-lethal levels of water pollutants on fish.  相似文献

羊传染性脓疱皮炎(Contagious ecthyma)俗称羊口疮(Orf)是由羊口疮病毒(Orf virus,ORFV)引起的一种人畜共患传染病。ORFV是痘病毒科副痘病毒属的代表性成员之一,具有鲜明而独特的种属特征。在进化过程中,病毒捕获一系列免疫调节/致病性相关基因,通过各种表达产物协同性地限制宿主的免疫清除效应,以庇护种群的增殖和病毒粒子成熟。本文综述了ORFV的分子特征,着重分析了病毒主动干预宿主免疫应答、设计免疫逃逸的分子机制。明确病毒的免疫调节/致病性元件及其效应途径,有利于加深对ORFV生物学特性的理解,同时有利于针对Orf建立有效的防制。  相似文献

Since cladocerans from the genus Daphnia are known to have evolved several inducible defenses (morphological and life history shifts) against the notostracan predator Triops, we investigated whether hatching was also altered in response to Triops. We tested whether dormant eggs of Daphnia magna are able to detect Triops cancriformis kairomones in the water as a signal of predation pressure and alter their hatching response accordingly to avoid predation. We predicted that, in the presence of Triops kairomones, hatching fractions might be reduced (postponing hatching to a next growing season) and/or that hatching might peak earlier (increasing chances to reproduce before Triops becomes predatory). We also tested whether this response depended on the origin of the population. Ephippia from three D. magna populations, originating from one permanent lake and two temporary pond systems, were exposed to Triops kairomone and control treatments. We observed significant population differences in hatching patterns, both in terms of the fraction of eggs that hatch as well as the timing of hatching, with evidence for within-season bet-hedging through delayed hatching in the populations inhabiting temporary habitats. However, no indication was found that the populations also adjust their hatching pattern to the presence of Triops kairomones.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies in Greenland Eskimos led to the hypothesis that marine oils rich in n-3 fatty acids (also referred to as omega (omega)-3 fatty acids) are hypolipidemic and ultimately antiatherogenic. Metabolically controlled trials in which large amounts of fish oil were fed to normal volunteers and hyperlipidemic patients showed that these fatty acids (FAs) are effective at lowering plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Although more recent trials using smaller, more practical doses of fish oil supplements have confirmed the hypotriglyceridemic effect, they have shown little effect on total cholesterol levels; hypertriglyceridemic patients have even experienced increases in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels of 10-20% while taking n-3 FA supplements. Discrepancies among fish oil studies regarding the effects of n-3 FAs on LDL-C levels may be understood by noting that, in the majority of studies reporting reductions in LDL-C levels, saturated fat intake was lowered when switching from the control diet to the fish oil diet. When fish oil is fed and saturated fat intake is constant, LDL-C levels either do not change or may increase. Levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol have been found to increase slightly (about 5-10%) with fish oil intake. Plasma apolipoprotein levels change in concert with their associated lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Although the decrease in triglyceride levels appears to result from an inhibition in hepatic triglyceride synthesis, the mechanisms leading to the increases in LDL and HDL have not been determined. Finally, fatty fish or linolenic acid may serve as alternative sources of long-chain n-3 FAs, but further studies will be needed to document their hypolipidemic and/or antiatherogenic effects.  相似文献

Many species have extreme within-sex morphological and behavioral polymorphisms, most commonly different male phenotypes that practice different reproductive strategies. Although much is known about the role of hormones in sexual differentiation, little is known about what role hormones might play in within-sex differentiation. The relative plasticity hypothesis is derived from the classical organization-activation model of hormone action. It distinguishes between two types of polymorphic systems: a fixed system in which individual males assume one phenotype for their adult lives and a plastic system in which individual males can change phenotypes at least once. By analogy to sexual differentiation, the relative plasticity hypothesis generally predicts that organizational influences of hormones will be more important in fixed systems and activational influences of hormones will be more important in plastic systems. A review of our knowledge of the role of hormones in differentiation of within-sex polymorphisms indicates that the relative plasticity hypothesis accounts for otherwise diverse and contradictory results. This further supports the hypothesis that the organizational-activational model of hormone action derived from sexual differentiation generalizes to within-sex polymorphisms. However, studies of the effects of hormone manipulations on within-sex differentiation are rare but are desperately needed to further our understanding of this problem. Further studies of discontinuous behavioral variation characteristic of polymorphic species may further our understanding of the physiological basis of within-sex behavior variation in all species.  相似文献

Avian hatching failure is a widespread phenomenon, affecting around 10% of all eggs that are laid and not lost to predation, damage, or desertion. Our understanding of hatching failure is limited in terms of both its underpinning mechanisms and its occurrence across different populations. It is widely acknowledged that rates of hatching failure are higher in threatened species and in populations maintained in captivity compared to wild, non-threatened species, but these differences have rarely been quantified and any broader patterns remain unexplored. To examine the associations between threat status, management interventions, and hatching failure across populations we conducted a phylogenetically controlled multilevel meta-analysis across 231 studies and 241 species of birds. Our data set included both threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) and non-threatened (Near Threatened and Least Concern) species across wild and captive populations, as well as ‘wild managed’ (‘free-living’) populations. We found the mean overall rate of hatching failure across all populations to be 16.79%, with the hatching failure rate of wild, non-threatened species being 12.40%. We found that populations of threatened species experienced significantly higher mean hatching failure than populations of non-threatened species. Different levels of management were also associated with different rates of hatching failure, with wild populations experiencing the lowest rate of hatching failure, followed by wild managed populations, and populations in captivity experiencing the highest rate. Similarly, populations that were subject to the specific management interventions of artificial incubation, supplementary feeding, and artificial nest provision displayed significantly higher rates of hatching failure than populations without these interventions. The driver of this correlation between hatching failure and management remains unclear, but could be an indirect result of threatened species being more likely to have lower hatching success and also being more likely to be subject to management, indicating that conservation efforts are fittingly being focused towards the species potentially most at risk from extinction. This is the most comprehensive comparative analysis of avian hatching failure that has been conducted to date, and the first to quantify explicitly how threat status and management are associated with the rate of hatching failure in a population. We discuss the implications of our results, focusing on their potential applications to conservation. Although we identified several factors clearly associated with variation in hatching failure, a significant amount of heterogeneity was not explained by our meta-analytical model, indicating that other factors influencing hatching failure were not included here. We discuss what these factors might be and suggest avenues for further research. Finally, we discuss the inconsistency in how hatching failure is defined and reported within the literature, and propose a standardised definition to be used in future studies which will enable better comparison across populations and ensure that the most accurate information is used to support management decisions.  相似文献

This paper reviews our very limited knowledge about resting-egg hatching and early population development in planktonic rotifers. Hatching of stem females from resting eggs may occur soon after resting eggs are produced, but perhaps usually it is delayed by a minimum obligate diapause, by a requirement for seasonal temperature changes, or by sinking to sediment environments that prevent hatching. In deep-water sediments, hatching probably is inhibited by low oxygen, darkness, or low temperature, so that eggs likely hatch following resuspension during water-column turnover. Populations should develop primarily by female parthenogenesis and have relatively low clonal diversity. By contrast, in shallow-water sediments, eggs are more likely to experience conditions conducive to hatching and to be resuspended into the water column. Populations may develop by massive emergence of stem females as well as by female parthenogenesis and thus have a very high clonal diversity. Stem females of some species are particularly fit for colonization of new habitat. First, compared to females hatched from parthenogenetic eggs, they can have a greater lipid reserve that enhances survival and reproduction. Second, amictic stem females can contain a transmissible factor that inhibits sexual reproduction and diapause for several to many successive generations, thus promoting rapid reproduction via female parthenogenesis.  相似文献
