The establishment of non-native habitat-forming seaweeds into new areas may trigger important changes in ecosystem functioning, yet their community and ecosystem-level effects remain largely understudied. Here we studied the spatial distribution of two common fish species (Xyrichtys novacula and Bothus podas) which are key components of communities in unconsolidated bottoms of temperate areas regarding the colonization of the newly-introduced tropical seaweed Halimeda incrassata in the Mediterranean Sea. We used a spatially-explicit before-after-control-impact model and a unique data-set formed by 6 years of fine-scale spatial information of fish and seaweed distribution and abundance. We demonstrate a long-term alteration on the spatial distribution of X. novacula characterized by a shift towards non-native H. incrassata beds, while no effect on B. podas. The introduction of the tropical seaweed H. incrassata has led to the re-distribution of X. novacula, potentially by harbouring a greater biodiversity of species at the base of the food-web through adding biogenic structure to an otherwise bare sediment. Our work demonstrates that non-native tropical habitat-forming species have the potential to maintain or even enhance fish abundance in unconsolidated bottoms in temperate areas potentially altering the functioning of native habitats.  相似文献

Horizontal and vertical distribution of algae in Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis beds was studied in the area of Mt. Stolovaya in Amursky Bay, Sea of Japan. Thirty-four species of macroalgae (2 species of Chlorophyta, 26 Rhodophyta, and 6 Ochrophyta) were found in the area of study. Two fields of the unattached alga Ahnfeltia were located opposite Mt. Stolovaya; they differed in area, macrophyte stock, number and biomass of attendant species, hydrochemical and light conditions. A monodominant Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis community formed in the southern field and a bidominant community of Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis + Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis developed in the northern field. It is suggested that the horizontal distribution of common macrophyte species in the Ahnfeltia beds at Mt. Stolovaya is conditioned by the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reaching the surface of the algal bed. Differences in tolerance of Ahnfeltia and attendant species to shadowing and in light conditions across the alga stratum define the vertical distribution of algae within the bed. Chondrus armatus and Ptilota filicina were found mainly in the upper layer of the algal bed. A. tobuchiensis, A. flabelliformis, Chaetomorpha linum, and Coccotylus orientalis extended across the entire thickness of the bed.  相似文献

The green-algal class Klebsormidiophyceae (Streptophyta), which occurs worldwide, comprises the genera Klebsormidium, Interfilum, Entransia, and Hormidiella. Ecophysiological research has so far focused on the first two genera because they are abundant in biological soil crust communities. The present study investigated the photosynthetic performances of Hormidiella attenuata and two strains of Entransia fimbriata under light, temperature, and desiccation stress. Their ultrastructure was compared using transmission electron microscopy. The two Entransia strains showed similar physiological responses. They used light more efficiently than Hormidiella, as indicated by higher oxygen production and relative electron transport rate under low light conditions, lower light saturation and compensation points, and higher maximum oxygen production during light saturation. Their requirement for low light levels explains the restriction of Entransia to dim limnetic habitats. In contrast, Hormidiella, which prefers drier soil habitats, responded to light gradients similarly to other aero-terrestrial green algae. Compared to Entransia, Hormidiella was less affected by short-term desiccation, and rehydration allowed full recovery of the photosynthetic performance. Nevertheless, both strains of Entransia coped with low water availability better than other freshwater algae. Photosynthetic oxygen production in relation to respiratory consumption was higher in low temperatures (Entransia: 5 °C, Hormidiella: 10 °C) and the ratio decreased with increasing temperatures. Hormidiella exhibited conspicuous triangular spaces in the cell wall corners, which were filled either with undulating cell wall material or with various inclusions. These structures are commonly seen in various members of Klebsormidiophyceae. The data revealed significant differences between Hormidiella and Entransia, but appropriate adaptations to their respective habitats.  相似文献

Eggcases of eight rajiform skates (Dipturus nidarosiensis, D. oxyrinchus, Leucoraja melitensis, Raja asterias, R. brachyura, R. clavata, R. miraletus and R. polystigma) present in the central-western Mediterranean are described, based on specimens obtained from fishery surveys. Eggcase features such as dimensions, horns and apron lengths, and presence/absence of lateral keels were crucial to discriminate the eggcases of the various species. Morphological and morphometric data, confirmed by the multivariate analysis, indicated that the eggcase of R. miraletus and L. melitensis were distinct from those of the other species for being unkeeled. Within the species having keeled eggcases, those of the genus Dipturus and R. brachyura were discriminated from the remaining group by having the largest dimensions and aprons. Sandy bottoms (<100–150 m depth) were identified as egg-laying sites (i.e. sites with females bearing eggcases in uteri) for many species belonging to genus Raja Raja asterias, R. brachyura, R. miraletus and R. polystigma). The finding of R. asterias and R. miraletus carrying eggcases yearly on the same sites, seems to confirm the theory that many rajid species demonstrate site fidelity, returning to the same depositional area on an annual basis. Some remarks on reproductive biology of these skates are also provided. The eggcase identification key reported here represents the first for the Mediterranean and may be useful, in the future, to identify egg-laying grounds of skates with a nonlethal method.  相似文献

The amoeba, Mayorella viridis contains several hundred symbiotic green algae in its cytoplasm. Transmission electron microscopy revealed strong resemblance between symbiotic algae from M. viridis the symbiotic Chlorella sp. in the perialgal vacuoles of Paramecium bursaria and other ciliates. Although it is thought that the M. viridis and symbiotic algae could be model organisms for studying endosymbiosis between protists and green algae, few cell biological observations of the endosymbiosis between M. viridis and their symbiotic algae have been published. In this study, we characterized the specificity of endosymbiotic relationships between green algae and their hosts. Initially, we established stable cultures of M. viridis in KCM medium by feeding with Chlorogonium capillatum. Microscopic analyses showed that chloroplasts of symbiotic algae in M. viridis occupy approximately half of the algal cells, whereas those in P. bursaria occupy entire algal cells. The symbiotic algae in P. bursaria contain several small spherical vacuoles. The labeling of actin filaments using Acti-stain? 488 Fluorescent Phalloidin revealed no relationship between host actin filaments and symbiotic algal localization, although the host mitochondria were localized around symbiotic algae. Symbiotic algae from M. viridis could infect algae-free P. bursaria but could not support P. bursaria growth without feeding, whereas the original symbiotic algae of P. bursaria supported its growth without feeding. These data indicated the specificity of endosymbiotic algae relationships in M. viridis and P. bursaria.  相似文献

In the Mediterranean, habitat-forming corals often characterize essential fish habitats. While their distribution is sufficiently known for the western basin, few data are available from the Central-Eastern Mediterranean Sea (CEM). This study fills this gap supplying the largest dataset ever built on the geographical and bathymetric distribution of the most relevant habitat-forming corals (Eunicella cavolini, Eunicella verrucosa, Eunicella singularis, Leptogorgia sarmentosa, Paramuricea clavata, Corallium rubrum and Savalia savaglia) of the CEM. Information collected from different sources such as literature, citizen science, and from the World Wide Web (WWW) was combined. Videos published on the WWW provided additional information on the presence of fishing lines and signs of damage, as well as on the distribution of purple and yellow-purple colonies of Paramuricea clavata. The study highlighted the impressive amount of information that the WWW can offer to scientists, termed here as Web Ecological Knowledge (WEK). The WEK is constantly fuelled by internauts, representing a free, refreshable, long-term exploitable reservoir of information. A quick and easy method to retrieve data from the WWW was illustrated. In addition, the distribution of corals was overlapped to marine protected areas and to the distribution of environmental conditions suitable for coralligenous habitats, fragile biogenic Mediterranean structures hosting complex assemblages in need of strict protection. The collected data allowed identifying priority areas with high species diversity and sites that are impacted by fishing activities. Supplied data can correctly address conservation and restoration policies in the CEM, adding an important contribution to ecosystem-based marine spatial planning.  相似文献

Although reef corals are dependent of the dinoflagellate Symbiodinium, the large majority of corals spawn gametes that do not contain their vital symbiont. This suggests the existence of a pool of Symbiodinium in the environment, of which surprisingly little is known. Reefs around Curaçao (Caribbean) were sampled for free-living Symbiodinium at three time periods (summer 2009, summer 2010, and winter 2010) to characterize different habitats (water column, coral rubble, sediment, the macroalgae Halimeda spp., Dictyota spp., and Lobophora variegata, and the seagrass Thalassia testudinum) that could serve as environmental sources of symbionts for corals. We detected the common clades of Symbiodinium that engage in symbiosis with Caribbean coral hosts A, B, and C using Symbiodinium-specific primers of the hypervariable region of the chloroplast 23S ribosomal DNA gene. We also discovered clade G and, for the first time in the Caribbean, the presence of free-living Symbiodinium clades F and H. Additionally, this study expands the habitat range of free-living Symbiodinium as environmental Symbiodinium was detected in T. testudinum seagrass beds. The patterns of association between free-living Symbiodinium types and habitats were shown to be complex. An interesting, strong association was seen between some clade A sequence types and sediment, suggesting that sediment could be a niche where clade A radiated from a free-living ancestor. Other interesting relationships were seen between sequence types of Symbiodinium clade C with Halimeda spp. and clades B and F with T. testudinium. These relationships highlight the importance of some macroalgae and seagrasses in hosting free-living Symbiodinium. Finally, studies spanning beyond a 1-yr cycle are needed to further expand on our results in order to better understand the variation of Symbiodinium in the environment through time. All together, results presented here showed that the great diversity of free-living Symbiodinium has a dynamic distribution across habitats and time.  相似文献

Macrocystis integrifolia and Lessonia trabeculata form vast kelp beds providing a three-dimensional habitat for a diverse invertebrate and fish fauna off northern Chile. Habitat modifications caused by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are likely to alter the inhabiting communities. The aim of this study was to reveal relationships between distinct habitat structures of a M. integrifolia kelp bed, a dense L. trabeculata kelp bed and L. trabeculata patches colonizing a barren ground, and the associated dominant macrobenthic key species. Seasonally 15 sampling units (10 m2 each) of any of the three habitats were monitored by SCUBA divers, which counted sporophytes and macroinvertebrates living between the latter. Furthermore, samples of plants were analysed in the laboratory to measure the morphological variables: total plant length, maximal holdfast diameter, stipe number, number of dichotomies per stipe, frond width and total drained wet mass. Multivariate analysis showed that the L. trabeculata kelp bed is denser, with a higher number of dichotomies per stipe, whereas sporophytes of M. integrifolia are longer with more stipes and wider fronds. Sporophytes of L. trabeculata patchily present on barren ground are shorter and have more stipes compared with those in the dense L. trabeculata kelp bed. Thus, the habitats provide different three-dimensional structures. The associated macrobenthic communities show a variable degree of overlapping; however, key faunal assemblages were distinguished for each habitat. Our study provides evidence that habitat diversity drives species diversity, the more homogeneous, monospecifically composed kelp bed habitats show comparatively low diversity, mainly caused by the dominance of the ascidian P. chilensis and T. tridentata in the M. integrifolia bed, and the mussel A. ater only present in the L. trabeculata bed. Species richness and diversity is highest in the heterogeneous habitat where L. trabeculata patches interrupt the barren ground. Our study revealed morphological differences between M. integrifolia and L. trabeculata kelp beds reflected in stipe number, plant length, dichotomies per stipe, and wet mass, which influence the composition of the associated characteristic fauna and its functional relations i.e. T. niger and T. tridentata.  相似文献

The ranges of background concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Cd in Fucus algae from the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the White Sea were determined. The lower background threshold of element concentration was calculated as Me15–2MAD15, the upper background threshold was determined as Me+2MAD. The upper background threshold of the metal contents in Fucus algae can be used as the maximum permissible regional concentration in assessing pollution levels of marine habitats. Comparison of the Me15–2MAD15 values showed that Fucus algae of the White Sea had increased Mn and decreased Cd concentrations compared to those in Pacific algae. The concentrations of Zn were higher in Fucus algae of the Sea of Japan than in macrophytes from the White Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. The background concentration range of Fe in Fucus algae of the Sea of Japan was much narrower compared to that in their counterparts from the White Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. The background metal concentrations in Fucus algae are specific to a sea region; their variations are connected not only with the trace element contents in abiotic components of the environment, but also with the functioning of coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

The warm-Atlantic crabs Pachygrapsus maurus (Lucas, 1846) and P. transversus (Gibbes, 1850) are two congeneric species showing a tendentially disjoined distribution in the Mediterranean Sea, with cores in the Algero-Provencal and Levantine basins, and sporadic records elsewhere. In the north-central Mediterranean, first records of these taxa date back centuries ago, but subsequently they were no longer reported for almost a century. We hereby report their additional spread in central Mediterranean and discuss the recent proliferation of sightings in the area. The recently ascertained occurrence of both species in the Strait of Messina confirms that some less stenotherm taxa of tropical/subtropical origin may colonize some sheltered habitats despite cooling of surface water due to the local upwelling. By contrast, the different settlement success observed so far in the north-central Tyrrhenian Sea showed that P. maurus might be able to further spread and colonize the entire area, whereas P. transversus might be hampered by interspecific competition with the autochthonous P. marmoratus further than climatic constraints.  相似文献

Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) occur throughout the circumpolar north; however, their distributions at localized scales are not well understood. The seasonal habitat associations and diet preferences across life-history stages of this keystone species are also poorly known, thereby impeding effective regulatory efforts in support of conservation objectives. The distribution of Arctic Cod in the Canadian Beaufort Sea was assessed using bottom trawling in shelf and slope habitats between 20 and 1000 m depths. Highest catch biomasses occurred at 350 and 500 m depth slope stations, coinciding with >0 °C temperatures in the Pacific–Atlantic thermohalocline and Atlantic water mass. Calanus glacialis, Calanus hyperboreus, Themisto libellula, and Themisto abyssorum were identified as key prey species in the diet of Arctic Cod, comprising approximately 86 % of total biomass in guts. Hierarchical cluster analysis with a SIMPROF test identified five statistically significant (p < 0.05) diet groups among gut samples. Arctic Cod shifted from a primarily Calanus diet at shelf stations (<200 m depth) to a Themisto diet in slope habitats (>200 m depth) coinciding with an associated increase in fish standard length with depth. Smaller Arctic Cod fed primarily on Calanus copepods and larger Arctic Cod fed primarily on the larger Themisto species. The habitat and diet associations presented here will inform knowledge of structural and functional relationships in Arctic marine ecosystems, aid in mitigation and conservation efforts, and will enhance our ability to predict the effects of climate change on the local spatial and depth associations of this pivotal marine fish.  相似文献

Gravel-sand river terraces were nearly eliminated from central European landscape by river channelization. Monotypic stands of common reed (Phragmites australis) growing on such terraces are often stressed by drought, which makes them vulnerable to Lipara spp. (Diptera: Chloropidae) gallmakers. Although Lipara are considered ecosystem engineers, only fragmentary information is available on the biology of their parasitoids and inquilines. We analyzed the assemblages of arthropods (Arachnida, Collembola, Dermaptera, Psocoptera, Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Raphidioptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera) that emerged from 17,791 Lipara-induced galls collected in winter from 30 reed beds in the Czech Republic, 15 of which were situated at (post)industrial sites (gravel-sandpits, tailing ponds, limestone quarries, colliery dumps, and reclaimed lignite open-cast mines) and 15 were in near-natural habitats (medieval fishponds, and river and stream floodplains). The Chao-1 estimator indicated 229.3 ± 18.1 species in reed galls at (post)industrial and 218.1 ± 23.6 species at near-natural sites, with the Sørensen index reaching only 0.58. We identified 18 red-listed species and four new species for the Czech Republic (Gasteruption phragmiticola, Echthrodelphax fairchildii, Haplogonatopus oratorius and Enclisis sp.), representing mostly obligate (64 %) or facultative (9 %) reed specialists. We propose that Lipara gall-associated assemblages undergo a long-term cyclic ecological succession. During first 10 years after reed bed formation, only Lipara spp. and several other species occur. During next decades, the reed beds host species-rich assemblages with numerous pioneer species (Singa nitidula, Polemochartus melas) that critically depend on presence of prior disturbances. Middle-aged reed beds (near medieval fishponds) are prevalently enriched in common species only (Oulema duftschmidi, Dimorphopterus spinolae). Habitats with the longest historical continuity (river floodplains) host again species-rich assemblages with several rare species that probably require long-term habitat continuity (Homalura tarsata, Hylaeus moricei). Landscape dynamics is thus critical for the persistence of a full spectrum of reed gall inquilines, with (post)industrials serving as the only refugia for pioneer species ousted from their key nesting habitats at once cyclically disturbed gravel-sand river terraces.  相似文献

The gastropod Hexaplex trunculus is widely distributed in a relatively large range of habitats, but has no dispersal stage. We investigated its genetic structure across its distribution range, from Mediterranean Sea to adjacent Atlantic coasts, by sequencing mitochondrial DNA portions of the NADH dehydrogenase gene ND2 (420 pb) and the internal transcribed spacer ITS2 (450 pb). Our results suggested a significant genetic variability of ND2 (π = 0.009 and Hd = 0.629) and low variability of the ITS2 sequences. A strong phylogeographic break, separated the Aegean populations from those of Western/Eastern Mediterranean and the Atlantic ones, was founded. The tow lineages may have been separated by vicariance events due to the Peloponnese break that separates the Aegean populations from other populations and was maintained until now by the quasi-circular anticyclonic front associated to the straits of Cretan Arc of the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Tunisian coasts appear particularly diverse since the two divergent lineages co-occured. These results may have management consequences since H. trunculus is a high commercial value harvested species.  相似文献

Water chestnut (genus Trapa) is an annual floating-leaved macrophyte that produces dense beds known to drastically modify freshwater ecosystems. Although Trapa displays a distinct phenology that should alter the innate seasonal dynamics of ecosystems, the seasonality of these effects has rarely been investigated. Therefore, we examined seasonal changes in physicochemical conditions and assemblages of zoobenthos and zooplankton, and whether these changes were correlated with the rise and decline of dense beds of Trapa japonica in Lake Mikata, a temperate shallow lake in central Japan. Our results suggested that the formation of dense Trapa beds during summer resulted in hypoxia, which significantly decreased the abundance of Chironomidae and Oligochaeta in the benthic community, as well as that of Calanoida among zooplankton. When dense Trapa beds formed, we also detected growth of other taxa that were resistant to hypoxia, including Cladocera, Cyclopoida, Ostracoda, and Nematoda. Chlorophyll a concentration declined across the lake during summer, when dense Trapa beds formed. The decline in Trapa beds from autumn to spring resulted in increased dissolved oxygen concentration, chlorophyll a concentration, and invertebrate abundance (Chironomidae, Oligochaeta and Calanoida), as well as a decrease in taxa utilizing the dense Trapa beds. Our results suggest that the phenology of dense Trapa beds can drastically change the seasonal dynamics of physicochemical conditions and the lower components of the food web in a shallow lake ecosystem.  相似文献

Fourteen blue-green and green algae survived for widely different time periods ranging between 22–102 d in control culture medium. Irrespective of their long or short survival period in control cultures, their pro- or eukaryotic nature, their different morphological types or natural habitats, they all survived for a short time period ranging between 3–8 d in sewage water, 5–10 d in fertilizer factory effluent, ¼-2 d in brassica oil, ½-2 d in phenol, 1–3 d in toluene, and 1–4 d in benzene (showing the relative toxicity of different chemicals to different algae, and the antialgal nature of brassica oil). Dilution decreased the toxicity of these agents very little, indicating that they all were very toxic to algae. None of the agent induced the formation of any reproductive or dormant cells. Sewage water, fertilizer factory effluent, brassica oil and/or benzene favored the formation of necridia cells in Phormidium bohneri, P. foveolarum, Microcoleus chthonoplastes, Lyngbya birgei, and L. major filaments. Scenedesmus quadricauda shed off all spines earlier, Hormidium flaccidum fragmented less or not at all, Scytonema millei formed no false branch and heterocyst, Aphanothece pallida and Gloeocapsa atrata cells did not divide, Cosmarium granatum cells did not form any zygospore and Oedogonium sp. not any oogonia-like cells under all or most of treatments with 25–100 % sewage water, 1–100 % fertilizer factory effluent, 1–100 % brassica oil, 25–100 % phenol, toluene and benzene.  相似文献

Kelp forests dominate temperate and polar rocky coastlines and represent critical marine habitats because they support elevated rates of primary and secondary production and high biodiversity. A major threat to the stability of these ecosystems is the proliferation of non-native species, such as the Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida (‘Wakame’), which has recently colonised natural habitats in the UK. We quantified the abundance and biomass of U. pinnatifida on a natural rocky reef habitat over 10 months to make comparisons with three native canopy-forming brown algae (Laminaria ochroleuca, Saccharina latissima, and Saccorhiza polyschides). We also examined the biogenic habitat structure provided by, and epibiotic assemblages associated with, U. pinnatifida in comparison to native macroalgae. Surveys conducted within the Plymouth Sound Special Area of Conservation indicated that U. pinnatifida is now a dominant and conspicuous member of kelp-dominated communities on natural substrata. Crucially, U. pinnatifida supported a structurally dissimilar and less diverse epibiotic assemblage than the native perennial kelp species. However, U. pinnatifida-associated assemblages were similar to those associated with Saccorhiza polyschides, which has a similar life history and growth strategy. Our results suggest that a shift towards U. pinnatifida dominated reefs could result in impoverished epibiotic assemblages and lower local biodiversity, although this could be offset, to some extent, by the climate-driven proliferation of L. ochroleuca at the poleward range edge, which provides complex biogenic habitat and harbours relatively high biodiversity. Clearly, greater understanding of the long-term dynamics and competitive interactions between these habitat-forming species is needed to accurately predict future biodiversity patterns.  相似文献

The n-3 and n-6 series of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are important for numerous metabolic functions that reduce the risk of inflammation, cancer, and heart diseases. These fatty acids (FAs) have been detected in high concentrations in some species of algae. The amount of the n-3 and n-6 PUFAs is closely associated with abiotic factors, such as solar radiation intensity, salinity, and temperature variation. However, abiotic influence on PUFA levels, along with the physiological function of these molecules in algae, remains inconclusive. In the present study, the quantities of the n-3 and n-6 in Antarctic red algae species Iridaea cordata, Palmaria decipiens, Plocamium cartilagineum, and Pyropia endiviifolia were determined. The lipids were extracted from the macroalgae according to the method followed by Bligh and Dyer (1959) and converted to methyl esters for further analysis using gas chromatography. The main n-6 PUFA identified and quantified in this study of Antarctic red algae were linoleic acid (18:2n-6), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (20:3n-6), and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6). The eicosapentaenoic acid was detected at high concentrations in all species, with approximately 62.8% of total FA in P. endiviifolia, 75.4% in P. decipiens, 50.4% in I. cordata, and 20.1% in P. cartilagineum. The results corroborate those of the literature and show that PUFAs increased in red algae environments, with increased production of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs.  相似文献

The distribution of the allochthonous crab Percnon gibbesi and its relationships with other benthic invertebrate species was assessed inside the marine reserve of Cabo de Palos—Islas Hormigas (Mediterranean sea, Spain) and neighbouring non-protected sites. Although a significant spatial variability was detected at finer spatial scale, there was no influence of protection measures or insularity on the abundance of P. gibbesi. The presence of small holes, encrusting algae and low slope favour the colonization success of this crustacean, and the spatial distribution of these habitat features could explain the observed pattern. The abundance of P. gibbesi was similar to that of native crab species; however, a non-significant negative relationship between the abundance of P. gibbesi and native crabs (Pachygrapsus marmoratus and Eriphia verrucosa), urchins (Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus) and a snail (Phorcus turbinatus) was observed. This work highlights the importance of monitoring alien crab population densities taking structural habitat and other potentially influential factors into account and the likely effect of this alien species on the native ones.  相似文献

Ammonoids from the basal beds of the Nerpalakh Formation (Lower Frasnian) of Belkovsky Island (New Siberian Archipelago) are systematically studied. Taxonomically, the assemblage studied (Manticoceras insulare sp. nov., Tornoceras typum (Sandberger, 1851), and T. contractum Glenister, 1958) is similar to the Early Frasnian ammonoid assemblage of South Timan, from which its is distinguished by the absence of the genera Timanites and Komioceras. The same beds contain conodonts of the Palmatolepis transitans Zone (= MN 4 Zone of the Montagne Noire standard succession), which allow the correlation of the beds studied with the Timanites keyserlingi and Komioceras stuckenbergi ammonoid zones of South Timan. The Early Frasnian ammonoids could supposedly have entered the region of the New Siberian Archipelago from the southwest at the time of a major transgression, which facilitated the distribution of the genera Manticoceras and Tornoceras. The fossil fallow deer Dama dama geiselana Pfeiffer from Neumark-Nord (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) is upgraded to species level and discussed within the current taxonomy of recent and fossil fallow deer. Typical antler and skeletal characteristics are discussed in comparison with the recent Dama dama, Dama mesopotamica and the fossil species Dama clactoniana, Dama nestii and Dama rhenana. The phylogenetic relationship of fallow deer can be traced back to the Late Pliocene and distinguished morphologically from Cervus elaphus, Cervus nippon and Axis axis. Late and Middle Pleistocene finds from Germany are presented and discussed in the context of the finds from the Mediterranean region and Great Britain. The differences in antler morphology and bone dimensions in West German and North-East German fallow deer from the Late Pleistocene support the hypothesis of different immigration channels, on the one hand from the eastern Mediterranean along the Danube and on the other from the west along the Rhone and Rhine. In the Middle Pleistocene, Dama mesopotamica is considered as the typical fallow deer in the eastern Mediterranean, while in the west, Dama clactoniana is widespread. The hypothesis of immigration from the eastern Mediterranean is supported by the fossil record in Germany with the fallow deer from Edesheim. Conversely, Dama geiselana probably influenced East Mediterranean populations. Special tooth characteristics of Dama geiselana occur with lower frequency in Dama mesopotamica. In the Bronze Age, the fallow deer from Kastanas (Macedonia) shares antler characteristics, the high frequency of specific features of the scapula, and the astragalus with Dama geiselana. A relict population of Dama geiselana probably reached the Eastern Mediterranean at the beginning of the last cold stage.  相似文献
