Platygaster diplosisae and Aprostocetus procerae attack both the African rice gall midge (AfRGM), Orseolia oryzivora, and Orseolia bonzii, a closely related gall midge that feeds on Paspalum scrobiculatum. Recent research has shown that managing this weed at the edge of rice fields offers African farmers, low-cost non-chemical control of AfRGM.  相似文献

Diglyphus isaea (Walker) and Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are common idiobiont parasitoids of leafminers attacking vegetable crops. They exhibit differing levels of synovigeny, and host feeding enhances their fecundity and longevity. The reproductive systems of these two parasitoids are typical of hymenopteran eulophids, consisting of two ovaries, each usually comprising three polytrophic meroistic ovarioles. Diglyphus isaea possesses two obvious oviduct accessory glands, which are absent in N. formosa. Both parasitoids underwent oosorption when starved, while feeding on host larvae promoted oogenesis and egg maturation. In both, oogenesis and vitellogenesis commenced on the first day of the pupal stage rather than after eclosion. Formation of ovarioles in D. isaea commenced 1 day earlier than in N. formosa. Mature eggs were rarely observed in ovaries of newly emerged D. isaea, but usually a few were present in N. formosa. When hosts (second–third instar Liriomyza sativae larvae) were provided, the number of mature eggs in D. isaea ovaries initially increased and then stabilized, while in N. formosa, the number first increased and then decreased. Diglyphus isaea had fewer but larger eggs than N. formosa did. Thus, synovigenic divergence begins at the pupal stage and may result in different life-history traits of adults.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The female reproductive system and protein deposition in the ovaries during development have never been examined in the bamboo borer Omphisa fuscidentalis Hampson. The aim of this study was thus to study the morphology of the female reproductive system of each stage of development. The female reproductive system of the borer consists of a pair of ovary, oviduct and accessory glands. Each ovary is composed of four polytrophic ovarioles that connect to lateral oviducts, fused with a common oviduct. The size of the ovary in diapausing larvae for 9 months was determined. The length and width of the ovaries were the smallest in September larvae (0.343 ± 0.03 and 0.071 ± 0.01 mm, respectively). The ovaries were the largest during ovarian development in May (0.752 ± 0.08 mm long and 0.084 ± 0.01 wide). Additionally, ovarian size was significantly larger in adults than in pupae. The ovarian protein concentration of larvae in May was 0.59 ± 0.06 mg/ml and increased to 16.61 ± 7.5 and 37.42 ± 5.5 mg/ml in pupae (June) and adults (July), respectively. The results showed ovarian development in all life stages of this holometabolous insect, which has a longer life cycle than other lepidopterans.

Capnodis tenebrionis causes damage in many species of Rosaceae. The present study investigates on the morphology of the female reproductive system of C. tenebrionis. The female reproductive system of C. tenebrionis has a pair of ovaries, lateral oviducts, a common oviduct, spermatheca, and bursa copulatrix. Each ovary in C. tenebrionis consists of approximately 24 telotrophic meroistic type ovarioles. The ovarioles of C. tenebrionis have four regions (terminal filament, tropharium, vitellarium, and pedicel). Tropharium have trophocytes, young oocytes, and prefollicular cells. Vitellarium consists of previtellogenic, vitellogenic, and choriogenic oocytes. Previtellogenic oocyte is surrounded by cylindrical epithelial cells. Its ooplasm is homogeneous and basophilic. In vitellogenic oocyte, there are intercellular spaces between monolayered follicle cells. Its ooplasm has yolk granules and lipid droplets. Choriogenic oocyte are surrounded by chorion and single-layered cylindrical cells. There are yolk granules and lipid droplets in its ooplasm which is asidophilic. In C. tenebrionis female, spermatheca and bursa copulatrix wall is surrounded by thin cuticular intima, monolayer epithelial, glandular cells, and muscle layer. Spermatheca lumen contains a large number of spermatozoa. Bursa copulatrix lumen is filled with secretory material. This study may be useful in terms of the morphology of mature female reproductive organs of Buprestidae and other coleopteran species.  相似文献

Summary By following the lineage of the primordial germ cell and the mesoderm cells during the ontogeny of the gall midge,Heteropeza pygmaea, it has been determined that the nurse chamber of the polytrophic ovarioles of this insect is derived from the descendants of these cells. Such a dual origin for the nurse chamber of an insect ovary is the first of its kind to be reported.  相似文献

Using light and scanning electron microscopy, the internal male and female reproductive anatomy of the praying mantid Ciulfina klassi is identified and described. This is the first detailed study to investigate the internal reproductive morphology of any Mantodea. The female structures identified were (1) paired ovaries with primitive panoistic type ovarioles, (2) a single blind-ended spermatheca with secretory gland cells and surrounding layer of striated muscle, and (3) female accessory glands associated with the production of the ootheca (the egg casing). The male structures identified were (1) paired multi-tubular testes, in which different stages of spermatogenesis were observed, (2) tubular vasa deferentia, (3) seminal vesicles, (4) male accessory glands and (5) a single muscular ejaculatory duct. Knowledge of basic reproductive morphology can be used to infer function and so provide key information for future research into reproductive behavior and physiology in the Mantodea.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the genital tracts in amphigonic females of Aphidoidea is described for the first time, using Euceraphis betulae Koch (Aphididae: Calaphidinae) as a representative. The female reproductive apparatus consists of two ovaries, each one with three/four meroistic telotrophic ovarioles; two sac‐like accessory glands lie laterally to a sac‐like seminal receptacle, opening into the dorso‐medial part of the common oviduct by means of a spermathecal duct. A marked secretory activity takes place in the epithelial cells of all the investigated tracts as shown by ultrastructural observation of many organelles involved in this process. No evident golgian area was observed in the cytoplasm of these cells. Extensive smooth endoplasmic reticulum, whose probable role is here discussed, was observed in epithelial cells of the wall of the accessory gland. Spermathecal duct and seminal receptacle had peculiar features that could be related to different secretory activities carried out by these two parts of the spermatheca.  相似文献

In a psychodid, Tinearia alternata, the initial differentiation of the polytrophic ovary occurs during the early larval stages. Early in development, each ovary anlage is a solid organ subdivided into three distinct zones: the cortex houses germ cells and somatic interstitial tissue, while two other somatic regions will give rise to the oviduct calyx and anterior part of the lateral oviduct. Germ cell cluster formation precedes the development of ovarioles. Each ovariole houses only one functional egg chamber. All ovarioles within paired ovaries are developmentally synchronized. In the larval ovaries, the newly formed egg chambers and then the ovarioles are intermingeled with and surrounded by the somatic interstitial tissue of the ovary cortex. The interstitial cells give rise to all the somatic elements of the ovarioles. In the pupal ovaries, the remaining interstitial tissue degenerates; thus, the ovarioles protrude into the body cavity. The ovaries in psychodids develop relatively large and swollen oviduct calyxes that are equivalent to receptaculum seminis (spermatheca). The morphological differentiation of germ cells within the egg chambers starts during late larval/early pupal stages. Nurse cell nuclei contain prominent nucleoli and polytene chromosomes. Oocyte growth results from accumulation of yolk and then, in the final stages of oogenesis, from an inflow of cytoplasm from the nurse cells. J. The female reproductive system of the humpbacked fly Megaselia scalaris Loew (Diptera : Phoridae) was examined in whole mount preparations and serial sections. The system includes 2 ovaries, paired lateral oviducts, a common oviduct, and a genital chamber, opening externally through a gonopore, anteriad and ventrad to the anus. The ducts of the 2 accessory glands open independently into the dorsal region of the genital chamber. The terminal duct of a 2-armed spermatheca joins the right posterior and ventral wall of the genital chamber, immediately inside the gonopore. Passing dorally, the spermathecal duct lies immediately ventral to the duct of the right accessory gland. A short distance posteriad, it divides into two branches, each supplying an arm of the spermatheca. The genital chamber extends both anteriorly and posteriorly from its junction with the common oviduct, creating anterior and posterior compartments. In the right lateral wall of the genital chamber, a distinctive loop-shaped thickening (plate) resembles a darkened thread when it is observed through the integument. Features likely to have taxonomic utility include the posterior and ventral location of the terminal portion of the spermathecal duct; and the asymmetrically arranged, loop-shaped plate.  相似文献

The female reproductive system of Sphaerodema rusticum consists of a pair of ovaries, two lateral oviducts, a median common oviduct, and a median spermatheca. Accessory glands are absent. Each ovary has five free ovarioles branching from the oviduct. Each ovariole consists of a terminal filament, germarium, vitellarium, brown mass, and an exceptionally long pedicel. The terminal filament consists of a central core, interstitial cells, and an outer sheath. In the germarium, which consists of trophic and prefollicular regions, the trophic region or nurse cell chamber is divided into four histologically differentiated zones, distinguished as zones I–IV. Nutritive cords, originating from the posterior end of the trophic core in zone IV extend centrally and join the developing oocytes in the prefollicular chamber and the vitellarium. The compact prefollicular tissue at the base of the trophic core gives rise to prefollicular cells which, after encircling the young oocytes, become modified into follicular epithelial cells, the interfollicular plug, and epithelial plug. The young oocytes descend into the vitellarium and gradually develop into mature oocytes. A compound corpus luteum is observed simultaneously in all the ovarioles of both ovaries after ovulation. Below the epithelial plug there is an accumulation of material, the “brown mass,” which develops cyclically in correlation with the ovulation cycle. Each pedicel stores five mature chorionated eggs ready for oviposition. The epithelium of the anterior region of the pedicel secretes a PAS-positive material. General morphology and histology of the subdivisions of the ovarioles are described.  相似文献

Hymenopteran insects have meroistic polytrophic ovaries characterised by trophocytes associated with oocytes inside the follicles. In pro-ovigenic species, all oocytes mature before emergence and no trace of oogenesis is visible in adult females. Pro-ovigeny is a rare condition among Hymenoptera, but common in pollinating fig wasps. In the present investigation, we studied adult and pupa females of three fig wasp species with different trophic strategies. We demonstrated that females of Pegoscapus aerumnosus and Idarnes spp. have an unusual ovarian organisation (i.e. each ovariole has only one mature egg and no oocyte) that has led to misleading interpretation of fig wasp reproductive anatomy. The ovaries of these studied species have several ovarioles, recognisable by the presence of nuclei of tunica propria cells surrounding them. Each adult wasp ovariole had one mature egg. None of the pupae had mature eggs, but all of them had follicles with oocytes in different developmental stages. The studied fig wasps are pro-ovigenic, irrespective of their trophic strategy, since there were no signs of ovigeny in adult females. We discuss ecological and phylogenetic factors that could play a role in fig wasps reproductive strategies.  相似文献

We studied the ovary structure and initial stages of oogenesis in 15 representatives of several dermapteran taxa, including the epizoic Arixeniina. In all examined species, the ovaries are meroistic–polytrophic. The ovaries of the basal taxa (‘Pygidicranidae’, ‘Diplatyidae’, and Labiduridae) are composed of elongated ovarioles, attached to short lateral oviducts. In these groups, ovarioles contain several (more than 30) ovarian follicles in a linear arrangement. In the Eudermaptera, the ovaries are composed of 1–6 (Spongiphoridae) or 20–40 (Forficulidae, Chelisochidae) short ovarioles (containing 2 ovarian follicles only) that open to strongly elongated lateral oviducts. In all investigated dermapterans, the ovarian follicles are composed of two germline cells only: an oocyte and a polyploid nurse cell that are covered by a simple follicular epithelium. Our studies indicate that despite a rather unique morphology of the ovarian follicles in the examined species, the processes leading to the formation of the oocyte and nurse cell units are significantly different in basal versus derived taxa. The ovaries of Arixenia esau are composed of 3 short ovarioles attached to a strongly dilated lateral oviduct, ‘the uterus’, containing developing embryos. Histological analysis suggests that the origin of the oocyte and nurse cell units in this species follows the pattern described in eudermapterans. The interpretation of our results in an evolutionary context supports the monophyly of the Dermaptera and Eudermaptera, and the inclusion of the Arixeniina and Hemimerina in the latter taxon.  相似文献

To understand influence of two species of parasitoids on host population dynamics, adult population dynamics of pine needle gall midge (PNGM), Thecodiplosis japonensis and two species of parasitoids, Inostemma matsutama and Inostemma seoulis were observed using emergence traps from 1986 to 2005. Density of PNGM decreased after outbreaks in 1986 and 1987 and showed density-dependent regulation. Relationships between density of PNGM and its parasitoids were linear except the period of outbreak regardless of parasitoids species. Relationships between host density and parasitism of I. matsutama and I. seoulis were density-independent and inverse density-dependent, respectively. I. seoulis was the dominant parasitoid against PNGM. Interspecific competition between two parasitoids was not strong and temporal niche segregation between two parasitoids was a possible mechanism for coexistence of two parasitoids. The parasitoid complex responded to changes in host density more sensitively than single parasitoid species. These results suggested that two parasitoid can stabilize PNGM population density without strong negative effects on each species of parasitoids.  相似文献

The annual oviductal cycle of the Cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus, is described using electron microscopy. This is only the second such study on a snake and the first on a viperid species. Specimens were collected in reproductive and nonreproductive condition throughout the year and five ultrastructurally unique regions were recognized: the anterior infundibulum, posterior infundibulum, glandular uterus, nonglandular uterus, and vagina. Except for the anterior infundibulum and vagina, which exhibit no seasonal variation in ultrastructure, the oviduct becomes highly secretory at the start of vitellogenesis. This includes the entire luminal border of the uterus, the tubular glands of the glandular uterus, and the luminal border and sperm storage tubules of the posterior infundibulum. The secretory materials produced in the oviduct vary among regions of the oviduct, and also can vary among time periods in the same region of the oviduct. Variation is especially evident in the sperm storage tubules. Secretory activity in the sperm storage tubules ceases after ovulation, but the tubular glands of the glandular uterus remain secretory until parturition, at which time secretory activity in the varying sections of the oviduct decreases dramatically. After parturition, the oviduct remains in a dormant state until the next reproductive season. The seasonal variation in oviducal morphology mirrors the temperate primitive reproductive cycle known for some pitvipers. Uterine glands of A. piscivorous are more similar in secretory activity to those of an oviparous lizard than a viviparous colubrid snake, suggesting variation in uterine gland morphology between snakes of different families. The knopper gallwasp Andricus quercuscalicis Burgsdorf 1783 (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) has invaded western and northern Europe from southern and eastern Europe over the last 400 years. A. quercuscalicis has two alternating generations, which differ in phenology, structure, and host oak species. This study describes geographic variation in the community in the tiny catkin galls of the sexual generation on Turkey oak, Quercus cerris, and compares the patterns obtained with those in the community attacking the alternate agamic generation. As predicted from considerations of parasitoid recruitment to the communities of invading phytophagous insects (Cornell and Hawkins 1993), in its native range the sexual generation shows (1) higher parasitoid community species richness, (2) higher total mortality due to parasitoid attack and (3) a higher ratio of specialist to generalist parasitoid species than is evident in the invaded range. Counter to predictions, there is no indication that parasitoid community richness in the invaded range has increased with time since the arrival of the new host. Higher host mortality in the native range is due principally to a single specialist, Aulogymnus obscuripes Mayr 1877 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), and is not distributed evenly among parasitoid species which attack the gall-former only in this area. This contrasts with the community in Britain, where three principal generalist parasitoids cause approximately equal mortalities. The agamic gall contains a taxonomically and structurally diverse guild of parasitoid and inquiline species, associated with the changing resource provided by a large, long-lived, complex gall. In contrast, the sexual community includes a taxonomically and structurally narrow guild, associated with a resource which is structurally simple, small in size and short-lived. No parasitoid species attacks the gall-former in both generations. Surprisingly, in spite of these differences in the nature of the gall resource in the two generations, over their entire range (native and invaded) the parasitoid guilds of the two are equally species rich.  相似文献

Anatomy and ultrastructure of the female and male reproductive system inAcarus siro L. were investigated by light and electron microscopy. The female system consists of paired ovaries of nutrimentary type in which oogonia and oocytes are connected by bridges with a large central cell. The oviducts empty into the uterus, which passes into preoviporal duct lined bycuticle, and opening as a longitudinal slit (oviporus). An elongated accessory gland composed of one type of secretory cell is located along each oviduct. The copulatory opening occurs at the posterior margin of the body and leads, via the inseminatory canal, to the receptaculum seminis, consisting of the basal and saccular part. Both inseminatory canal and basal part of receptaculum seminis are lined by cuticle, whereas the wall of the sac is formed by cells covered only by long, numerous microvilli. The basal part of the receptaculum seminis joins the ovaries via two lumenless transitory cones. The male reproductive system contains paired testes, in which spermatogonia tightly surround the central cell. The proximal part of the paired vasa deferentia serves as a sperm reservoir, while the distal one has a glandular character. An unpaired, cuticle-lined ejaculatory duct opens into the apex of the aedeagus. The single accessory gland is located asymmetrically at the level of, or slightly posterior to, coxae IV.The structure of the genital papillae, which are topographically related to the genital opening in both sexes, is also briefly described.  相似文献
