The polyculture among vegetables is an activity that to have good results, needs a proper planning. Although it often requires more labor, has several advantages over monoculture, among them is that polycultures are generally are more productive, provide with productivity of various plant constituents and a more balanced human diet, contribute to economic return, economic and yield stability, social benefits and farmer's direct participation in decision-making. The objective of this study was to evaluate agroeconomic indices of polycultures derived from the combination of two cultivars of lettuce with two cultivars of rocket in two cultures strip-intercropped with carrot cultivar ‘Brasilia’ through uni-multivariate approaches in semi-arid Brazil. The experimental design used was of randomized complete blocks with five replications and the treatments arranged in a factorial scheme of 2 × 2. The treatments consisted of the combination of two lettuce cultivars (Babá de Verão and Tainá) with two rocket cultivars (Cultivada and Folha Larga) in two cultures associated with carrot cv. Brasília. In each block were grown plots with two lettuce cultivars and two rocket cultivars, and carrot in sole crop. In each system was determined the lettuce leaf yield, rocket green mass yield and carrot commercial yield. Agrieconomic indices such as operational cost, gross and net income, monetary advantage, rate of return, profit margin, land equivalent ratio and yield efficiency for DEA were used to measure the efficiency of intercropping systems. In the bicropping of lettuce and rocket associated with carrot cv. ‘Brasilia’, suggests the use of lettuce cultivar ‘Tainá’ combined with rocket cultivars ‘Cultivada’ or ‘Folha Larga’. It was observed significant effect of lettuce cultivars in the evaluation of polycultures of lettuce, carrot and rocket, with strong expression for the lettuce cultivar ‘Tainá’. Both uni- and multivariate approaches were effective in the discrimination of the best polycultures.  相似文献

The use of computer-generated (CG) stimuli in face processing research is proliferating due to the ease with which faces can be generated, standardised and manipulated. However there has been surprisingly little research into whether CG faces are processed in the same way as photographs of real faces. The present study assessed how well CG faces tap face identity expertise by investigating whether two indicators of face expertise are reduced for CG faces when compared to face photographs. These indicators were accuracy for identification of own-race faces and the other-race effect (ORE)–the well-established finding that own-race faces are recognised more accurately than other-race faces. In Experiment 1 Caucasian and Asian participants completed a recognition memory task for own- and other-race real and CG faces. Overall accuracy for own-race faces was dramatically reduced for CG compared to real faces and the ORE was significantly and substantially attenuated for CG faces. Experiment 2 investigated perceptual discrimination for own- and other-race real and CG faces with Caucasian and Asian participants. Here again, accuracy for own-race faces was significantly reduced for CG compared to real faces. However the ORE was not affected by format. Together these results signal that CG faces of the type tested here do not fully tap face expertise. Technological advancement may, in the future, produce CG faces that are equivalent to real photographs. Until then caution is advised when interpreting results obtained using CG faces.  相似文献

Criminal investigations often use photographic evidence to identify suspects. Here we combined robust face perception and high-resolution photography to mine face photographs for hidden information. By zooming in on high-resolution face photographs, we were able to recover images of unseen bystanders from reflections in the subjects'' eyes. To establish whether these bystanders could be identified from the reflection images, we presented them as stimuli in a face matching task (Experiment 1). Accuracy in the face matching task was well above chance (50%), despite the unpromising source of the stimuli. Participants who were unfamiliar with the bystanders'' faces (n = 16) performed at 71% accuracy [t(15) = 7.64, p<.0001, d = 1.91], and participants who were familiar with the faces (n = 16) performed at 84% accuracy [t(15) = 11.15, p<.0001, d = 2.79]. In a test of spontaneous recognition (Experiment 2), observers could reliably name a familiar face from an eye reflection image. For crimes in which the victims are photographed (e.g., hostage taking, child sex abuse), reflections in the eyes of the photographic subject could help to identify perpetrators.  相似文献

There is limited information concerning the effect of salinity on phytosiderophores exudation from wheat roots. The aim of this hydroponic experiment was to investigate the effect of salinity on phytosiderophore release by roots of three bread wheat genotypes differing in Zn efficiency (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Rushan, Kavir, and Cross) under Zn deficiency conditions. Wheat seedlings were transferred to Zn-free nutrient solutions and exposed to three salinity levels (0, 60, and 120 mM NaCl). The results indicated that Cross and Rushan genotypes exuded more phytosiderophore than did the Kavir genotype. Our findings suggest that the adaptive capacity of Zn-efficient ‘Cross’ and ‘Rushan’ wheat genotypes to Zn deficiency is due partly to the higher amounts of phytosiderophore release. Only 15 days of Zn deficiency stress was sufficient to distinguish between Zn-efficient (Rushan and Cross) and Zn-inefficient (Kavir) genotypes, with the former genotypes exuding more phytosiderophore than the latter. Higher phytosiderophore exudation under Zn deficiency conditions was accompanied by greater Fe transport from root to shoot. The maximum amount of phytosiderophore was exuded at the third week in ‘Cross’ and at the fourth week in ‘Kavir’ and ‘Rushan’. For all three wheat genotypes, salinity stress resulted in higher amounts of phytosiderophore exuded by the roots. In general, for ‘Kavir’, the largest amount of phytosiderophore was exuded from the roots at the highest salinity level (120 mM NaCl), while for ‘Cross’ and ‘Rushan’, no significant difference was found in phytosiderophore exudation between the 60 and 120 mM NaCl treatments. More investigation is needed to fully understand the physiology of elevated phytosiderophore release by Zn-deficient wheat plants under salinity conditions.  相似文献

Predator-induced defences have been demonstrated in numerous marine molluscs, but never in giant clams (Bivalvia: Tridacnidae). Water-borne cues from the predatory crab Myomenippe hardwickii were tested for their ability to induce changes in the shell morphology, strength and growth of juvenile fluted giant clams, Tridacna squamosa. Specimens were maintained in effluent from tanks holding ‘fed crabs’, ‘starved crabs’ and ‘no crabs’. To ensure changes were due to predator cues only, food for the crabs was provided ex situ and measures were taken to minimise the prey signal. After 182 days, MANOVA identified differences in various shell parameters relating to shape and strength. CDA showed a clear change in overall morphology, with strong separation among the three treatments. Effluent from ‘fed crabs’ had a greater influence than effluent from ‘starved crabs’, possibly because the starved crabs were perceived as weaker, and thus less risk. Significantly more clams died in ‘fed crabs’ treatments (25%) and ‘starved crabs’ treatments (30%) compared to the ‘no crabs’ control (0%). This degree of mortality has not been observed in similar experiments elsewhere and represents a new challenge to interpret. We suggest that the cause is unlikely to be related to the plastic responses, but rather a result of some form of crab-associated contaminant.  相似文献

Enhanced ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation and water deficit affect plant growth and development. We determined the effects of UVB and drought stress on growth parameters and chemical attributes of two ecotypes (alpine and prairie) of Stellaria longipes under controlled-environment conditions. Clonal ramets of these ecotypes were grown under three UVB levels (0, 5, and 10 kJ m−2 d−1) and exposed to two watering regimes (well watered and drought stressed) for 21 days. Compared to the alpine, the prairie ecotype was taller, had higher number of nodes, and greater leaf area and specific leaf weight (leaf dry weight: leaf area), which resulted in increased dry matter in this ecotype. Overall, ‘prairie’ was higher in total chlorophyll (Chl), but lower in Chla:b ratio, flavonoids, and ethylene, than ‘alpine’. In both ecotypes, UVB and drought stress reduced growth and dry matter, whereas UVB increased carotenoids and flavonoids. Drought stress decreased ethylene evolution. These characteristics were also determined in plants growing in the field. In the field-growing plants, ‘prairie’ had higher growth and dry matter, but lower Chla:b ratio and flavonoids, than ‘alpine’. The two ecotypes responded differentially to UVB and watering regime, as ‘prairie’ appeared to be more sensitive to UVB and drought stress than ‘alpine’.  相似文献

Aluminium (Al) toxicity decreases plant growth. Secale cereale L. is among the most Al-tolerant crop species. In order to study the response to Al-long term exposure, two rye genotypes with different Al sensitivity (‘D. Zlote’ and ‘Riodeva’) were exposed to 1.11 and 1.85 mM Al and the antioxidant responses were followed for 2 and 3 weeks in roots and leaves. Al toxicity signals, such as a severe decrease in root growth, occurred sooner in ‘Riodeva.’ The antioxidant response was dependent on the genotype, the organ, Al concentration and the exposure period. Al-exposed roots of ‘D. Zlote’ showed earlier enhancements of APX, SOD and G-POX activities than those of ‘Riodeva.’ ‘D. Zlote’ roots showed stimulation of the AsA–GSH cycle after the second week (when root growth inhibition was less severe), while later (when severe root growth inhibition was observed), oxidation of AsA and GSH pools was observed. In leaves of both genotypes, CAT, SOD and G-POX activities increased with Al exposure. In these leaves, the effect of AsA–GSH was time dependent, with maximum oxidation at the second week, followed by recovery. We confirmed that the oxidation state of AsA and GSH pools is involved in the detoxification of Al-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, our data demonstrate that the production of ROS does not correlate with the Al-induced root growth decrease. Finally, the differences observed over time indicate that long term exposure may provide additional information on rye sensitivity to Al, and contribute to a better understanding of this species’ mechanisms of Al tolerance.  相似文献

The use of television and computer screens for presenting stimuli to animals is increasing as it is non-invasive and can provide precise control over stimuli. Past studies have used cathode ray tube (CRT) screens; however, there is some evidence that these give different results to non-flickering thin film transistor (TFT) screens. Hens’ critical flicker fusion frequency ranges between 80 and 90 Hz - above standard CRT screens. Thus, stimuli presented on CRT screens may appear distorted to hens. This study aimed to investigate whether changing the flicker rate of CRT screens altered hens’ discrimination. Hens were trained (in a conditional discrimination) to discriminate between two stimuli on a TFT (flickerless) screen, and tested with the stimuli on a CRT screen at four flicker rates (60, 75, 85, and 100 Hz). The hens’ accuracy generally decreased as the refresh rate of the CRT screen decreased. These results imply that the change in flicker rate changed the appearance of the stimuli enough to affect the hens’ discrimination and stimulus control is disrupted when the stimuli appear to flicker.  相似文献

There is interest in growing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) for forage, but little is known about the nutritive value and forage quality of modern cultivars. The objective of this study was to compare the chemical composition and in sacco degradation kinetics of three cultivars of peanuts (cv. ‘C99-R’, ‘Georgia-01R’, and ‘York’) at either stage 2 or 8 maturities when fresh and field-cured. Herbage yield was at least 3000 kg DM/ha for all cultivars at both maturities. Crude protein (CP) was greater (P < 0.0001) at R2 stage than at R8 stage; whereas, neutral detergent fiber (aNDF), acid detergent fiber, and Lignin (sa) were greater (P < 0.01) at R8 than R2 maturity stages. Water soluble carbohydrate and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen was not different (P > 0.07) among cultivars, maturity stage, or harvest forms. In vitro true digestibility was greatest (P < 0.02) for C99-R and least for York. Undegradable intake protein concentration was greatest (P < 0.04) in York and least for C99-R. Maturity had a greater effect on the degradation kinetics than harvest form or cultivar. The dry matter (DM) and CP in the soluble wash fraction (A) and insoluble but degradable fraction (B) and the effective ruminal degradability were greater among all cultivars and both harvest forms of the R2 maturity stage than the R8. The undegradable DM, aNDF, and CP in the undegradable fraction were greatest (P < 0.002) for all three cultivars at R8 maturity. The rate of degradation of DM and CP in the B fraction was faster (P < 0.001) at R2 stage than at R8 stage; whereas, rate of aNDF degradation was not different (P > 0.09) among treatments. Lag of DM, aNDF, or CP degradation was not different (P > 0.1) among treatments. The cultivars C99-R and Georgia-01R are recommended for further feeding trials.  相似文献

A two-alternative forced-choice discrimination task was used to assess whether baboons (N=7) spontaneously process qualitative (i.e., first-order) or quantitative (i.e., second-order) variations in the configural arrangement of facial features. Experiment 1 used as test stimuli second-order pictorial faces of humans or baboons in which the mouth and the eyes were rotated upside down relative to the normal face. Baboons readily discriminated two different normal faces but did not discriminate a normal face from its second-order modified version. Experiment 2 used human or baboon faces for which the first-order configural properties had been distorted by reversing the location of the eyes and mouth within the face. Discrimination was prompt with these stimuli. Experiment 3 replicated some of the conditions and the results of experiment 1, thus ruling out possible effects of learning. It is concluded that baboons are more adept at spontaneously processing first- than second-order configural facial properties, similar to what is known in the human developmental literature.  相似文献

Estradiol withdrawal after pregnancy is hypothesized to precipitate depressive symptoms in vulnerable women. A hormone-simulated pregnancy was induced in female rats and the effects of a ‘postpartum’ drop in estradiol on hippocampal cell proliferation were examined. All groups were ovariectomized or given sham surgery prior to treatment. Rats were randomly assigned to ‘postpartum’, ‘postpartum’ + EB (estradiol benzoate), ‘postpartum’ + DPN (diarylpropionitrile; an ERβ agonist), ‘postpartum’ + IMI (imipramine; a tricyclic antidepressant), sham, ovariectomized (OVX), sham + IMI or OVX + IMI groups. All ‘postpartum’ groups received hormone injections (estradiol and progesterone) over 23 days to simulate pregnancy, while IMI groups also received daily imipramine injections. After day 23, ‘postpartum’ rats were withdrawn from the hormone-simulated pregnancy (mimicking the postpartum drop in gonadal hormones), while other ‘postpartum’ treatment groups received daily injections of DPN, EB or IMI. On day 3 ‘postpartum’ all rats were injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU; a DNA synthesis marker) and perfused 24 h later to assess cell proliferation and cell death in the dentate gyrus. ‘Postpartum’ hormone withdrawal decreased hippocampal cell proliferation in the ‘postpartum’ and ‘postpartum’ + EB groups only. Chronic imipramine significantly increased hippocampal cell proliferation in sham + IMI, but not OVX + IMI rats suggesting that imipramine's effects to increase hippocampal cell proliferation in female rats is related to reproductive status. Cell death (pyknotic cells) was decreased only in the ‘postpartum’ group. Together, these results suggest an important, though complex, role for gonadal hormones in the cellular changes accompanying this model of postpartum depression.  相似文献

This study examines the effect of female presence on the amount of ‘strippable’ sperm, and the relationship between male sexual activity and the amount of ‘ready’ sperm in the male guppy Poecilia reticulata. The amount of strippable sperm was greater in males paired for one week with females than in isolated males. We separated these ‘paired’ males from females by a clear partition and thus exposed males to visual and possibly olfactory stimuli. In the second experiment, control males spent more time attending females and performed more sexual acts during a 15-min test period than males previously stripped of spermatophores. These results indicate that females play an important role in stimulating sperm availability in males and that the amount of ready sperm influences male sexual behaviour. Colour pattern variation is a striking and widespread phenomenon. Differential predation risk between individuals is often invoked to explain colour variation, but empirical support for this hypothesis is equivocal. We investigated differential conspicuousness and predation risk in two species of Australian rock dragons, Ctenophorus decresii andC. vadnappa . To humans, the coloration of males of these species varies between ‘bright’ and ‘dull’. Visual modelling based on objective colour measurements and the spectral sensitivities of avian visual pigments showed that dragon colour variants are differentially conspicuous to the visual system of avian predators when viewed against the natural background. We conducted field experiments to test for differential predation risk, using plaster models of ‘bright’ and ‘dull’ males. ‘Bright’ models were attacked significantly more often than ‘dull’ models suggesting that differential conspicuousness translates to differential predation risk in the wild. We also examined the influence of natural geographical range on predation risk. Results from 22 localities suggest that predation rates vary according to whether predators are familiar with the prey species. This study is among the first to demonstrate both differential conspicuousness and differential predation risk in the wild using an experimental protocol. Syntheses and room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structure determinations are recorded for a number of adducts of 1:1 stoichiometry of silver(I) oxyanion salts (perchlorate, nitrate, trifluoroacetate (‘tfa’) (increasing basicity)) with 2,2′-bis(pyridine) ligands (2,2′-bipyridyl, ‘bpy’; 2,2′-biquinolyl, ‘bq’; 2,2′-dipyridylketone, ‘dpk’; 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline, ‘dmp’). The adducts take two forms: (a) neutral mononuclear molecules, in which the 2,2′-bis(pyridine) ligand behaves as a chelate, with the silver coordination number dependent on the denticity of the anion; these are Agtfa:bpy (1:1) and AgClO4:bq (1:1) (and various (ionic) acetonitrile or pyridine solvates AgClO4:bq/dmp:MeCN/py (1:1:1), in which the solvent molecules are coordinated); and (b) one-dimensional polymers. The latter are diverse: in AgClO4:bpy, dpk (1:1), the anion is discrete, the polymer made up of an array of two-coordinate silver atoms linked by bpy ligands twisted about their central connecting element. In AgNO3:bpy, bq (1:1), the bpy ligands are chelating with the oxyanions bridging, cf. previously reported AgNO3:dpk (1:1), in which the nitrate chelates the metal, with the dpk bridging, chelating N,O to one silver, while the other nitrogen bridges to the next. With Agtfa, a novel binuclear adduct has been isolated in conjunction with the hydrated ligand, Agtfa:dpk:(dpk · H2O) (1:1:2). The far-IR spectra of several of these complexes show bands that can be assigned to the ν(AgN) modes, the positions of these bands correlating well with the relative Ag-N bond lengths.Syntheses and single-crystal X-ray structural characterizations are also reported for various adducts of silver(I) perchlorate, nitrate and trifluoromethanesulfonate with bpy, bq, ‘phen’ (= 1,10-phenanthroline), and ‘dmp’, of stoichiometry AgX:L (1:2). In each case the complex is ionic [AgL2]X; the silver atom is four-coordinate, but diverse and remarkable variations in stereochemistries associated with changes in the interligand N-Ag-N angles, presumably influenced by the different packing arrangements, are observed.  相似文献

Genotype and water deficit effects on leaf 2-DE protein profiles of two Populus deltoides × Populus nigra, cv. ‘Agathe_F’ and ‘Cima’, were analysed over a short-term period of 18 days in glasshouse using 4-month-old rooted cuttings and over a long-lasting period of 86 days in open field using 4-year-old rooted cuttings. Leaf proteomes were analyzed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and proteins were identified after database searching from MS peptide spectra.A reliable genotype effect was observed in the leaf proteome over experiment locations, water regimes and sampling dates. Quantitative differences between genotypes were found. Most of them corresponded to proteins matching isoforms or post-translational modification variants. However, ‘Cima’ displayed the highest abundance of antioxidant enzymes.In response to water deficit, about 10% of the reproducible spots significantly varied regardless of the experiment location, among which about 25% also displayed genotype-dependent variations. As a whole, while ‘Cima’ differed from ‘Agathe_F’ by increased abundance of enzymes involved in photorespiration and in oxidative stress, ‘Agathe_F’ was mainly differentiated by increased abundance of enzymes involved in photosynthesis.  相似文献

Rare plant species can be divided into naturally, ‘old rare’ species and anthropogenically, ‘new rare’ species. Many recent studies explored genetic diversity of ‘new rare’ species. Less is, however, known about genetic diversity of ‘old rare’ species. We examined isozyme genetic variability of 20 populations of an ‘old rare’ plant species, Ligularia sibirica (Asteraceae) in the Czech and Slovak Republic. It is a long-lived perennial herb with mixed-mating breeding system, widely distributed from East Asia to European Russia, with few isolated relict populations in the remaining part of Europe.The results showed high genetic diversity within populations (80.8%) and a low level of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.179). Genetic distance between populations correlated significantly with geographic distance. There was also a significant positive correlation between genetic diversity and population size. This is probably caused by destruction of habitats in last centuries and subsequent decrease of population size. Patterns of genetic diversity suggest that the recent distribution is a result of stepwise postglacial migration of the species and subsequent natural fragmentation.We conclude that L. sibirica populations preserve high levels of genetic diversity and are not yet threatened by genetic factors. However, this may change if changes in habitat conditions continue.  相似文献

The invasion of red blood cells (RBCs) is an essential event in the life cycle of all malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites; however, there are major gaps in our knowledge of this process. Here, we use video microscopy to address the kinetics of RBC invasion in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Under in vitro conditions merozoites generally recognise new target RBCs within 1 min of their release from their host RBC. Parasite entry ensues and is complete on average 27.6 s after primary contact. This period can be divided into two distinct phases. The first is an ∼11 s ‘pre-invasion’ phase that involves an often dramatic RBC deformation and recovery process. The second is the classical ‘invasion’ phase where the merozoite becomes internalised within the RBC in a ∼17 s period. After invasion, a third ‘echinocytosis’ phase commences when about 36 s after every successful invasion a dramatic dehydration-type morphology was adopted by the infected RBC. During this phase, the echinocytotic effect reached a peak over the next 23.4 s, after which the infected RBC recovered over a 5-11 min period. By then the merozoite had assumed an amoeboid-like state and was apparently free in the cytoplasm. A comparison of our data with that of an earlier study of the distantly related primate parasite Plasmodium knowlesi indicated remarkable similarities, suggesting that the kinetics of invasion are conserved across the Plasmodium genus. This study provides a morphological and kinetic framework onto which the invasion-associated physiological and molecular events can be overlaid.  相似文献

Current methods of TB diagnosis are time consuming and less suited for developing countries. The LAMP (loop mediated isothermal amplification) is a rapid method more suitable for diagnosis in resource limited settings and has been proposed as a viable test requiring further evaluation for use as a laboratory method as well. We evaluated two LAMP assays, using culture lysates of clinical sputum samples (from Southern India) and compared it to a proprietary multiplex PCR reverse-hybridization line probe assay (‘GenoType MTBC’ from HAIN Lifescience GmbH, Germany). The LAMP procedure was modified to suit the local conditions. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis specific LAMP assay (‘MTB LAMP’) showed sensitivity and specificity, of 44.7% and 94.4% respectively in a 60 min format, 85.7% and 93.9% respectively in a 90 min format and 91.7%, and 90.9% respectively in a 120 min format. The Mycobacteria universal LAMP assay (‘Muniv LAMP’) showed a sensitivity of 99.1%. The LAMP was shown to be a rapid and accessible assay for the laboratory identification of M. tuberculosis isolates. Initial denaturation of template was shown to be essential for amplification in unpurified/dilute samples and longer incubation was shown to increase the sensitivity. The need for modification of protocols to yield better efficacy in this scenario needs to be addressed in subsequent studies.  相似文献

Do predator-prey ‘waiting games’ where prey hide from potential predators have inherently unstable evolutionary outcomes, making it impossible to generate quantitative predictions about hiding times? Fiddler crabs, Uca lactea perplexa, respond to potential predators by retreating into their burrows. Time inside the burrow during unprovoked retreats during normal activity provides a ‘null model’ to test whether sex, tidal cycle and body size affect hiding time from potential predators. Using experimentally created predator-like stimuli we found that males hid for significantly longer than females, and larger crabs of both sexes also hid for longer. This differs from burrow use during unprovoked retreats, suggesting hiding time varies depending on the potential risk of predation on re-emergence. If risk prior to hiding predicts risk on emergence, the closer the proximity of a predator-like stimulus when first encountered the longer crabs should hide. We confirmed this experimentally (stimuli at 0.5 versus 2.5 m). Finally, we tested whether males hide for longer when a predator-like stimulus approaches them directly rather than tangentially. None of three pairwise comparisons was statistically significant, but crabs hid less as the angle of approach became more tangential. These results suggest prey can use stimuli prior to hiding to predict predation risk on re-emergence, but studies on predators are required to test this claim. Finally, theoretical models must explain why hiding time has a lognormal distribution and low variance such that a predator can predict when most prey will re-emerge.
