A total of 1127 crustacean specimens was sampled from five stations in the deep-sea depressions of the Sea of Marmara (>1000?m deep). Calocaris macandreae Bell, 1853 was by far the dominant species at all stations. Polycheles typhlops C. Heller, 1862 and Sergestes robustus Smith, 1882 were found in low numbers.  相似文献

Quantitative surveys of sessile benthos and fish populations associated with reef habitats across a 15–50 m depth gradient were performed by direct diver observations using rebreathers at Isla Desecheo, Puerto Rico. Statistically significant differences between depths were found for total live coral, total coral species, total benthic algae, total sponges and abiotic cover. Live coral cover was higher at the mid-shelf (20 m) and shelf-edge (25 m) stations, whereas benthic algae and sponges were the dominant sessile-benthic assemblage at mesophotic stations below 25 m. Marked shifts in the community structure of corals and benthic algae were observed across the depth gradient. A total of 119 diurnal, non-cryptic fish species were observed across the depth gradient, including 80 species distributed among 7,841 individuals counted within belt-transects. Fish species richness was positively correlated with live coral cover. However, the relationship between total fish abundance and live coral was weak. Abundance of several numerically dominant fish species varied independently from live coral cover and appeared to be more influenced by depth and/or habitat type. Statistically significant differences in the rank order of abundance of fish species at euphotic vs mesophotic stations were detected. A small assemblage of reef fishes that included the cherubfish, Centropyge argi, sunshine chromis, Chromis insolata, greenblotch parrotfish, Sparisoma atomarium, yellowcheek wrasse, Halichoeres cyanocephalus, sargassum triggerfish, Xanthichthys ringens, and the longsnout butterflyfish, Chaetodon aculeatus was most abundant or only present from stations deeper than 30 m, and thus appear to be indicator species of mesophotic habitats.  相似文献

Little is known about the biology and feeding ecology of Arctogadus glacialis (Peters, 1874), an endemic gadid fish species occurring circumpolarly in both ice-free and ice-covered Arctic seas. In this study we analysed specimens sampled from bottom trawl and Agassiz trawl catches conducted at eight stations in water depths from 115 to 490 m in the Northeast Water Polynya off Greenland in August 1990. Size composition and sex ratios were assessed for 585 fish with standard lengths ranging from 7.8 to 34.5 cm. Median fish sizes at the stations ranged between 8.6 and 18.8 cm. Quantitative stomach content analyses of a subsample of 175 specimens revealed that in the Northeast Water A. glacialis fed almost exclusively on pelagic prey. Truly benthic organisms were not found in the stomachs, and sympagic species were rarely recorded. Overall, calanoid copepods were the major prey in terms of numbers. However, stomach contents varied considerably between fish size groups. In terms of prey biomass, copepods dominated the diet of small fish (<12 cm), primarily occurring at shallow stations (115–250 m), whereas amphipods and mysids were relatively more important for larger fish (>16 cm), which dominated the catches at deep stations (360–480 m). We describe the feeding habits of 70 blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and 39 salmon sharks (Lamna ditropis) caught at 0–7 m depth at night by research drift gillnets in the transition region of the western North Pacific during April–May of 1999 and 2000. Blue sharks of 50–175 cm total length fed on a large variety of prey species, consisting of 24 species of cephalopods and 16 species of fishes. Salmon sharks of 69–157 cm total length fed on a few prey species, consisting of 10 species of cephalopods and one species of fish. Important prey for the blue sharks were large, non-active, gelatinous, meso- to bathypelagic cephalopods (e.g., Chiroteuthis calyx, Haliphron atlanticus, Histioteuthis dofleini and Belonella borealis) and small myctophid fishes. Important prey for the salmon sharks were mid-sized, active, muscular, epi- to mesopelagic squids (e.g. Gonatopsis borealis, Onychoteuthis borealijaponica and Berryteuthis anonychus). Our results suggest that blue sharks feed on cephalopods mainly during the daytime when they descend to deep water. Salmon sharks may feed opportunistically with no apparent diurnal feeding period. Blue sharks and salmon sharks have sympatric distribution in the transition region in spring; they have different feeding habits and strategies that reduce competition for food resources.  相似文献

Synopsis Twenty-two fish aggregation devices were deployed in 14 m of water off South Carolina. Species composition and abundance were determined by diver visual census on eight occasions from May through November, 1985. A total of 21 families and 36 species of fishes was observed at 121 stations. Pelagic fishes dominated the fauna with a 99.3% relative abundance, and Decapterus punctatus accounted for 97.6% of the individuals. Caranx crysos, Diplectrum formosum, Decapterus punctatus, Centropristis striata and Monacanthus hispidus were the most frequent species. Total fish abundance, number of species and abundance of four of the six most common species were significantly affected by season. Hurricane activity may have caused a significant drop in pelagic fish abundance at the FADs in July. No significant correlations among species abundances were found after removal of season and FAD type effects. Spatial zonation and seasonal occurrence patterns suggest some competition among pelagic fishes. Several factors that regulate FAD faunal abundance and composition are hypothesized, including: juvenile fish availability, availability of shelter, availability of adequate food resources, interspecific and intraspecific competition, severe sea conditions, and sporadic intrusions of large predatory fishes. It is hypothesized that the abundances of benthic and pelagic FAD fishes are correlated and that there is a direct or indirect energetic link between shallow water pelagic and benthic fish assemblages near FADs.  相似文献

The ciliate taxa from epilimnion, hypolimnion, and littoral of Lake Kinneret were studied from November to December 1987 during stratification. Two collections of planktonic and benthic ciliates were taken at each of six sampling stations. Benthic ciliates from the littoral zone were collected at seven stations along the lake shore. Densities were determined for each ciliate species and for total protozoans at each station and sampling date. Thirty-six species of ciliates, representing 31 Genera, 18 Orders and 7 Classes, were identified. Planktonic protozoans characteristic of the epilimnion included Coleps hirtus and Vorticella mayeri. The more abundant taxa of benthic ciliates in the profundal of the lake included Saprodinium dentatum, Plagiopyla nasuta and Dexiotricha plagia. The predominant ciliate in the littoral was Pleuronema coronatum. Principal component analysis, performed on the correlation matrix of both sampling stations and species, revealed that epilimnion, hypolimnion, and littoral belt were colonized by different ciliate communities.  相似文献

In August 2004 and 2005, an extensive study of the fish community was carried out in the largest water supply reservoir in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, the canyon‐shaped ?elivka Reservoir, using a fleet of Nordic multimesh gillnets. Fishes were sampled at eight locations along the longitudinal profile of the reservoir and at five benthic depth layers covering depths from the surface down to 18 m (benthic gillnet 1·5 m high), and at three pelagic depth layers down to the depth of 5 m above the bottom (pelagic gillnets 4·5 m high). Catches of both juvenile (age 0+ year) and adult (fishes >1 year) fishes were highest in the upper layers of the water column (i.e. in the epilimnion down to 5 m, and down to 10 m in the benthic habitats). Along the tributary–dam axis in the pelagic habitats, both juvenile and adult fishes preferred the upper part of the reservoir, where the maximum number of species and also the greatest abundance of zooplankton were found. In the benthic habitats, fishes selected location according to factors other than trophic status. More juvenile fishes were recorded in the benthic habitats than in the pelagic habitats. Depth had the largest explanatory power for predicting fish community composition, followed by the affiliation with benthic and pelagic habitats, and location on the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. The fish community was represented mainly by cyprinids and consisted of two distinct groups of species, with bleak Alburnus alburnus, rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus and asp Aspius aspius dominating the offshore group while perch Perca fluviatilis and ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus were affiliated with the inshore group of the adult fish community. Roach Rutilus rutilus, bream Abramis brama and pikeperch Sander lucioperca occurred in important proportions in both the inshore and the offshore zones. All species, with the exceptions of adult perch (1+ year and older), 0+ year perch and 0+ year roach, preferred the most eutrophic tributary part of the reservoir. 1. The taxonomic composition, abundance and biomass of heterotrophic protists (ciliates, heterotrophic flagellates (HF), rhizopods and actinopods) in the sediment and water column of shallow inlets of the Southern Baltic was studied under a variety of environmental conditions during 1996–1997. A shallow, highly eutrophic station and a deeper, less eutrophic station were compared.
2. Community biomass ranged from 0.12 to 0.34 μg C cm?3 in the water column and from 1.5 to 105 μg C cm?3 in the sediment. Heterotrophic protists dominated zooplankton biomass at both stations (73% and 84% mean contribution), while they were of minor importance within the zoobenthos. Expressed per unit area, benthic biomass contributed a significant part (44% and 49%) to the total heterotrophic protistan community at both stations.
3. Although the methodology for counting ciliates and HF was focussed on a high taxonomic resolution, the results reveal some general trends in the distribution of heterotrophic protists: protozooplankton biomass was dominated by flagellates (80% mean biomass contribution) at the shallow station and by ciliates (73% mean biomass contribution) at the deep station. In the benthos at both stations, ciliates were the dominant protozoans, followed by the hitherto little‐studied rhizopods (25% and 35% mean biomass contribution) and flagellates.
4. The degree of benthic–pelagic coupling differed between taxonomic groups. Benthic and pelagic communities of ciliates showed little taxonomic overlap. In contrast, many heterotrophic flagellate species were found both in the benthos and in the pelagic. These benthic–pelagic species contributed significantly to the biomass of HF in the water column. The planktonic rhizopod community consisted of a subset of those species found in the benthos.
5. The abundance of benthic and pelagic protists was positively correlated at the shallow station, but taxonomic data indicate that the direct exchange between benthic and pelagic communities was only partly responsible.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens were assessed for the Patagonian Shelf in the Falkland Islands region. Catch records from the commercial fishery and a research cruise were recorded from 1988 to 1996. Sampling included benthic, pelagic and semi-pelagic trawls and jigging. Moroteuthis ingens was recorded from 1,414 stations out of a total of 9,060 stations with 79.9% of all positive stations being from benthic trawls. Catch size ranged up to approximately 3,000 kg. The length frequency analysis and maturity indices suggested a major recruitment onto the shelf in September with a movement off the shelf during winter. There appears to be a lack of mature females on the Patagonian Shelf, indicating that females migrate into deeper offshore water to spawn. Observations of predation on Moroteuthis ingens on the Patagonian Shelf, along with a literature review, revealed that at least 4 mammal, 17 bird and 13 fish species prey on this squid.  Concentrations of cadmium, copper and zinc were measured in 34 octopuses over a large range of size and weight, caught in the Kerguelen shelf waters. Compared with levels normally encountered in European cephalopods, Cd concentrations in both species were very high: 30.7–47.1 and 27.3–54.4 μg/g dry weight in Graneledone sp. and Benthoctopus thielei, respectively; Cu concentrations were generally low while Zn concentrations exhibited similar levels. Distribution of Cd in tissues showed that the high levels of Cd in Kerguelen octopuses resulted from very high levels of the metal in the digestive gland (369 and 215 μg/g dry wt in Graneledone sp. and Benthoctopus thielei, respectively). The digestive gland accumulated about 90% of the total Cd in the whole animal. Due to the very high concentrations of Cd in the Kerguelen octopuses, we hypothesize that these species play an important role in the process of Cd transfer throughout the food chain to top vertebrate predators in this area. The distribution and relative biomass of cephalopods from pelagic waters off eastern Australia was examined between 1997 and 2004 from stomach contents of swordfish, yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish taken in the domestic longline fishery. A total of 38 taxa from 19 families were identified. Comparison of the species composition of the three predators indicated pronounced differences in cephalopod species composition. In swordfish, species of the family Ommastrephidae, particularly Ommastrephes bartramii (Lesueur 1821) and Nototodarus gouldi (McCoy 1888) dominated, whereas a more diverse mix of species was identified from yellowfin-sampled cephalopods. Todaropsis eblanae (Ball 1841) was the main cephalopod sampled from the surface-dwelling dolphinfish. For swordfish-sampled cephalopods, significant relationships were found between biomass and season, fluorescence and year. In yellowfin tuna, cephalopod biomass was significantly correlated with season, area and sea surface temperature. Significant factors differed between predator-sampler, possibly reflecting the limits of the predator, but could also give insights into individual cephalopod species distributions. However, the increase in cephalopod biomass over summer in both swordfish and yellowfin tuna suggested cephalopod biomass was higher over summer in the region.  相似文献

Accumulation rates of individual species (SpecAR) and relative abundances (percentages) of benthic foraminifera of an AMS 14C-dated high resolution sediment core from the Norwegian Seas (water depth: 2707 m) provide a record of the faunal fluctuations from the last glacial maximum across the Weichselian deglaciation to the Holocene. During glacial times, the total foraminifera accumulation remains at a very low level (< 100 specimens cm−2 kyr−1) and is dominated by two endofaunal species: Oridorsalis umbonatus (Reuss) and Siphotextularia rolshauseni (Phleger and Parker) and reworked specimens of the genus Elphidium. The following deglaciation period exhibits an increase of the AR of the total fauna at 14 kyr B.P. The species distribution is marked by the last appearance of S. rolshauseni and the first postglacial appearance of suspension feeding Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi (Schwager) 13 kyr B.P. The absolute maximum of benthic foraminiferal AR (2750 spec cm−2 kyr−1 occurred near 9 kyr B.P. at the end of the deglaciation. This maximum also marks the re-appearance of the agglutinating species Cribrostomoides subglobosus (Sars). The post-glacial interval is characterized by a twofold reduction of the total accumulation of benthic foraminifera. The species distribution shows two new species: Ammobaculites agglutinans (d'Orbigny, at 6 kyr B.P.) and Epistominella exigua (Brady, at 3.5 kyr B.P.). The total AR indicates benthic activity during glacial times was at a low level. It was significantly higher during the Holocene with an abrupt increase of benthic foraminiferal abundance from 10 to 9 kyr B.P. The Stepwise re-invasion into the postglacial deep-sea environment maybe related to specific habitat preference.  相似文献

Comprehensive data are presented on the total lipid contents of five species of notothenioid fish collected during summer 1991 in the Weddell Sea and the Lazarev Sea south of 69°S. The species were selected based on their different modes of life, benthic, benthopelagic and pelagic, to examine how the life style — among other factors — affects the proximate composition of these high-Antarctic fishes. Lipid contents of whole specimens showed an extremely wide range from 3.1 to 67.5% of dry weight (%DW), with corresponding carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios between 3.4 and 11.3. Lowest lipid contents were found in the benthic species Bathydraco marri and Dolloidraco longedorsalis with means of 11.0 and 11.9 %DW. The benthopelagic Trematomus lepidorhinus had an intermediate mean lipid content of 20.8 %DW, and the pelagic species Pleuragramma antarcticum and Aethotaxis mitopteryx were richest in lipid with means of 47.0 %DW and 60.8 %DW. There was a pronounced ontogenetic lipid accumulation with increasing size discernible in the lipid-rich species, especially in P. antarcticum. No clear relationship was found between lipid content and sex or maturity in A. mitopteryx and T. lepidorhinus, only the males of B. marri had higher lipid contents than the females. Lipid contents and water contents were inversely correlated. In conclusion, the mode of life of these species was clearly reflected by their lipid contents and lipids seem to have an important function, particularly as buoyancy aids in the pelagic species, which like all notothenioids lack a swim-bladder.  相似文献

Macrofauna has been sampled at 30 stations, at water depths of 1018–4478 m, along a transect extending between Northern Svalbard and the Makarov Basin, as a basis for understanding aspects of the benthic ecology of the Arctic Ocean. Species numbers, abundances and biomasses were extremely low, and generally varied between 0 to 11/0.02 m2, 0 to 850 individuals/m2, and 0 to 82.65 g/m2, respectively. A total of 42 species was found. The Amphipod Jassa marmorata was the most common species. Both numbers and biomasses of suspension-feeding species increased towards the Lomonosov Ridge, probably due to lateral transport of organic material by deep currents along the ridge.  相似文献

The metazoan parasite fauna of 50 specimens of Boreogadus saida (Lepechin) (Gadidae) from eastern Greenland is very similar to those of previous studies of the parasite fauna of B. saida from Greenland, eastern Canada, Alaska and the Russian Arctic. The digeneans Hemiurus levinseni, Derogenes varicus and Lecithaster gibbosus and cestode larvae were found at most stations. Single specimens of the nematode larvae Anisakis simplex were found at four stations. A comparison of the distribution of the larvae of Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. is difficult due to a possible confusion of the two genera. Most of the metazoan parasites of B. saida are generalist species found in several fish families. Boreogadus saida acquires most of its endoparasites by eating pelagic crustaceans, mainly copepods and amphipods. It plays an important role in the arctic ecosystem and its parasites are transferred to predatory fish, birds and mammals through the food web.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative benthic samples were collected monthly between December 1986 and December 1987 from several stations at various depths and basins in the karstic Lake Banyoles (Catalonia, Spain), to study the spatial distribution and seasonality of ostracodes. A total of eight ostracode species were found in the lake. Of these, Candona neglecta Sars, Isocypris beauchampi Paris and Cypria ophtalmica Jurine were the most common ostracodes at all depth stations. Darwinula stevensoni Brady & Robertson, Ilyocypris species (I. bradyi Sars and I. gibba (Ramdohr)), Cyprideis torosa (Jones) and Cyclocypris ovum Jurine, on the other hand, were confined to sublittoral and littoral areas of the lake.Substrate and organic matter content appeared to be relevant factors determining the distribution of ostracode species at the different stations. The highest abundance of ostracodes were in the sublittoral (Basin IV–7 m and Basin I-5 m) where the substrate was coarse and sediment had a high organic matter content (>35% LOI). Low oxygen levels in the hypolimnetic waters (i.e. < 1 mg l–1) may explain the absence of ostracodes at deeper zones in stations where the anoxic period lasts more than four months. On the other hand, low temperatures seem to favour the development of C. neglecta and D. stevensoni, while with higher temperatures I. beauchampi, C. torosa and C. ovum increased their abundances. However, no clear pattern can be observed, so ostracode species in Lake Banyoles, apparently, have non-seasonal life histories.  相似文献

The Peruvian sea represents one of the most productive ocean ecosystems and possesses one of the largest elasmobranch fisheries in the Pacific Ocean. Ecosystem-based management of these fisheries will require information on the trophic ecology of elasmobranchs. This study aimed to understand the diet, trophic interactions and the role of nine commercial elasmobranch species in northern Peru through the analysis of stomach contents. A total of 865 non-empty stomachs were analysed. Off northern Peru, elasmobranchs function as upper-trophic-level species consuming 78 prey items, predominantly teleosts and cephalopods. Two distinctive trophic assemblages were identified: (a) sharks (smooth hammerhead shark Sphyrna zygaena, thresher shark Alopias spp. and blue shark Prionace glauca) that feed mainly on cephalopods in the pelagic ecosystem; and (b) sharks and batoids (Chilean eagle ray Myliobatis chilensis, humpback smooth-hound Mustelus whitneyi, spotted houndshark Triakis maculata, Pacific guitarfish Pseudobatos planiceps, copper shark Carcharhinus brachyurus and school shark Galeorhinus galeus) that feed mainly on teleosts and invertebrates in the benthonic and pelagic coastal ecosystem. This study reveals for the first time the diet of T. maculata and the importance of elasmobranchs as predators of abundant and commercial species (i.e., jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas and Peruvian anchovy Engraulis ringens). The results of this study can assist in the design of an ecosystem-based management for the northern Peruvian sea and the conservation of these highly exploited, threatened or poorly understood group of predators in one of the most productive marine ecosystems.  相似文献

This study characterizes the composition and spatial distribution patterns of the benthic macrofauna in the intertidal mudflats of the Tagus estuary, western Portugal. A total of 68 species, more than 226,000 specimens with a total wet weight biomass of approximately 1170 g were identified in 380 sites. The species Streblospio shrubsolii, Cyathura carinata, Tharyx sp., Hydrobia ulvae and Tubificids were the most common and abundant. Scrobicularia plana strongly dominated the biomass. The invertebrate macrofauna of the Tagus estuary shows similarities to what is known from other temperate mudflats. The diversity of species, their overall abundance and the ratio of Molluscs plus Crustaceans to Polychaete species corroborate the distinctiveness between temperate and tropical mudflats and sandflats. The spatial distribution of the fauna reflects the sediment characteristics but the relationship between the environmental and the biological data is not as strong as obtained for sublittoral areas. This relationship diminishes from the sublittoral shelf to sublittoral estuarine areas, showing minimum values in this study, suggesting that such a relationship is less straightforward as natural disturbance increases. Nevertheless, a mixture of grain-size, elevation (inundation time) and particular habitats (relic oyster beds) form the best explanatory factors for the spatial distribution patterns of the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Tagus estuary.  相似文献

1. In eutrophic lakes, large amounts of the cyanobacterium Microcystis may overwinter in the sediment and re‐inoculate the water column in spring. 2. We monitored changes in pelagic and benthic populations of Microcystis in Lake Volkerak, The Netherlands. In addition, sedimentation rates and the rate of recruitment from the sediment were measured using traps. These data were used to model the coupling between the benthic and pelagic populations and to calculate the contribution of overwintering benthic and pelagic populations to the magnitude of the pelagic summer bloom. 3. Changes in the benthic Microcystis population showed a time lag of 3–14 weeks compared with the pelagic population. This time lag increased with lake depth. The largest amount of benthic Microcystis was found in the deepest parts of the lake. These observations suggest horizontal transport of sedimented Microcystis from shallow to deep parts of the lake. 4. Recruitment from and sedimentation to the sediment occurred throughout the year, with highest recruitment and sedimentation rates during summer. Model simulations indicate that the absence of benthic recruitment would reduce the summer bloom by 50%. 5. In spring, the total pelagic population was three to six times smaller than the total benthic population. Yet, model simulations predict that the absence of this small overwintering pelagic population would reduce the summer bloom by more than 64%. 6. Reduction of the overwintering pelagic populations, for instance by flushing, may be a useful management strategy to suppress or at least delay summer blooms of Microcystis.  相似文献

Although, pelagic Ostracoda are locally abundant component of the mesozooplankton in the waters around Svalbard, the group remains poorly characterised both taxonomically and ecologically. Herein, the spatial and vertical variations in abundances and species composition of the pelagic Ostracoda assemblages are examined and related to the water masses. The study is based on a series of zooplankton samples collected with a multinet plankton sampler (MPS; HydroBios, Kiel), consisting of five nets fitted with a 180-μm mesh net. Samples were collected from deep stations (i.e., with bottom depths >300 m) around Svalbard and included localities influenced by the West Spitsbergen Current and the East Spitsbergen Current and to the north of Svalbard, between years 2001 and 2006. Throughout all the samples studied Discoconchoecia elegans was the numerically dominant species. The other species found were Boroecia maxima, Boroecia borealis, Obtusoecia obtusata, and a rare novel Boroecia species. Analyses of the pelagic Ostracoda assemblages showed that their variability was predominantly influenced by four factors: water temperature, geographical position, bottom depth and season. The highest densities of D. elegans were correlated with salinities >35 PSU whereas B. maxima distribution was dependent on latitude. Highest concentrations of B. borealis were determined by longitude. Abundances of O. obtusata were positively correlated with warmer water temperatures. Thus this work suggests that halocyprids have the potential to be good indicators of environmental changes associated with shifts in climate at high latitudes in the North Atlantic.  相似文献
