Until recently, heart valve failure has been treated adopting open-heart surgical techniques and cardiopulmonary bypass. However, over the last decade, minimally invasive procedures have been developed to avoid high risks associated with conventional open-chest valve replacement techniques. Such a recent and innovative procedure represents an optimal field for conducting investigations through virtual computer-based simulations: in fact, nowadays, computational engineering is widely used to unravel many problems in the biomedical field of cardiovascular mechanics and specifically, minimally invasive procedures. In this study, we investigate a balloon-expandable valve and we propose a novel simulation strategy to reproduce its implantation using computational tools. Focusing on the Edwards SAPIEN valve in particular, we simulate both stent crimping and deployment through balloon inflation. The developed procedure enabled us to obtain the entire prosthetic device virtually implanted in a patient-specific aortic root created by processing medical images; hence, it allows evaluation of postoperative prosthesis performance depending on different factors (e.g. device size and prosthesis placement site). Notably, prosthesis positioning in two different cases (distal and proximal) has been examined in terms of coaptation area, average stress on valve leaflets as well as impact on the aortic root wall. The coaptation area is significantly affected by the positioning strategy ( ? 24%, moving from the proximal to distal) as well as the stress distribution on both the leaflets (+13.5%, from proximal to distal) and the aortic wall ( ? 22%, from proximal to distal). No remarkable variations of the stress state on the stent struts have been obtained in the two investigated cases.  相似文献

Computational mechanics of Nitinol stent grafts   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A finite element analysis of tubular, diamond-shaped stent grafts under representative cyclic loading conditions for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair is presented. Commercial software was employed to study the mechanical behavior and fatigue performance of different materials found in commercially available stent-graft systems. Specifically, the effects of crimping, deployment, and cyclic pressure loading on stent-graft fatigue life, radial force, and wall compliances were simulated and analyzed for two types of realistic but different Nitinol materials (NITI-1 and NITI-2) and grafts (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene-ePTFE and polyethylene therephthalate-PET). The results show that NITI-1 stent has a better crimping performance than NITI-2. Under representative cyclic pressure loading, both NITI-1 and NITI-2 sealing stents are located in the safe zone of the fatigue-life diagram; however, the fatigue resistance of an NITI-1 stent is better than that of an NITI-2 stent. It was found that the two types of sealing stents do not damage a healthy neck artery. In the aneurysm section, the NITI-1&ePTFE, NITI-1&PET, and NITI-2&PET combinations were free of fatigue fracture when subjected to conditions of radial stress between 50 and 150mmHg. In contrast, the safety factor for the NITI-2&ePFTE combination was only 0.67, which is not acceptable for proper AAA stent-graft design. In summary, a Nitinol stent with PET graft may greatly improve fatigue life, while its compliance is much lower than the NITI-ePTFE combination.  相似文献

Abstract. We tested the hypothesis that hooked setae function as anchors in three species of tubiculous polychaetes ( Eudistylia vancouveri, Schizobranchia insignis , and Owenia fusiformis ). All maintained position within their tubes when exposed to high pressures (up to 100–200 kPa) applied from the posterior direction (where it would tend to cause the tips of hooks to embed in the tube wall). When pressure was applied in the opposite direction, where hooks would not tend to embed in the tube wall, the worms were expelled from their tubes at lower pressures (30–100 kPa). The ability of these worms to maintain their position within their tubes was independent of body size. On the basis of these findings we made three predictions. First, worms that use their hooked setae as anchors should have those hooks located on the body in greatest number and size on the segments associated with greatest worm diameter. Second, as worms increase in size, setal armory should increase in a predictable way. The force that can be applied to extract worms from their tubes by suction feeding fish or wave action would increase as the area subject to suction increases (proportional to the cross sectional area of the tube). Therefore, we predict that setal armory should also increase as a squared function. Third, hooks or uncini should show patterns of wear or loss and/or the worms' bodies should show scars or wounds where the setae are most used (e.g., where worm diameter is at its maximum). All of these predictions were supported by the data and indicate that hooked setae function as anchors for tubiculous polychaetes. This is important for understanding the biology of these animals and has implications for using hooked setae as characters in phylogenetic analyses.  相似文献

The fish ectoparasites Branchiura (Crustacea) display two different ways of attachment to the fish surface as adults: the first maxillae are either hooks (Dolops) or suction discs (Argulus, Chonopeltis, and Dipteropeltis). In larval Argulus foliaceus the first maxillae are hooks. With the first molecular phylogeny of the Branchiura as a background, the present paper discusses the evolutionary scenarios leading to hooks versus suction discs. Specific homologies exist between larval Argulus foliaceus hooks and adult Dolops ranarum hooks. These include the presence of a comparable number of segments/portions and a distal segment terminating in a double structure: a distal two-part hook (in Argulus) or one hook and an associate spine-like structure (in Dolops). In the phylogenetic reconstruction based on three molecular markers (mitochondrial 16S rRNA, nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA), Dolops ranarum is found to be in a sister group position to all other Branchiura, which in this analysis include six Argulus and one Chonopeltis sequences. Based on the molecular phylogeny a likely evolutionary scenario is that the ancestral branchiuran used hooks (on the first maxilla) for attachment, as seen in Dolops, of which the proximal part was subsequently modified into suction discs in Argulus and Chonopeltis (and Dipteropeltis). The sister group relationship of the Branchiura and Pentastomida is confirmed based on the most comprehensive taxon sampling until now. No evidence was found for a branchiuran in-group position of the Pentastomida.  相似文献

In a mechanical component, stress-concentration is one of the factors contributing to reduce fatigue life. This paper presents a design methodology based on shape optimization to improve the fatigue safety factor and increase the radial stiffness of Nitinol self-expandable stent-grafts. A planar lattice free of stress concentrators is proposed for the synthesis of a stent with smooth cell shapes. Design optimization is systematically applied to minimize the curvature and reduce the bending strain of the elements defining the lattice cells. A novel cell geometry with improved fatigue life and radial supportive force is introduced for Nitinol self-expandable stent-grafts used for treating abdominal aortic aneurism. A parametric study comparing the optimized stent-graft to recent stent designs demonstrates that the former exhibits a superior anchoring performance and a reduction of the risk of fatigue failure.  相似文献

A novel stent was designed for the treatment of coronary bifurcation lesion, and it was investigated for its performance by finite element analysis. This study was performed in search of a novel method of treatment of bifurcation lesion with provisional stenting. A bifurcation model was created with the proximal vessel of 3.2 mm diameter, and the distal vessel after the side branch (2.3 mm) was 2.7 mm. A novel stent was designed with connection links that had a profile of a tram. Laser cutting and shape setting of the stent was performed, and thereafter it was crimped and deployed over a balloon. The contact pressure, stresses on the arterial wall, stresses on the stent, the maximal principal log strain of the main artery and the side-branch were studied. The study was performed in Abaqus, Simulia. The stresses on the main branch and the distal branch were minimally increased after deployment of this novel stent. The side branch was preserved, and the stresses on the side branch were lesser; and at the confluence of bifurcation on either side of the side branch origin the von-Mises stress was marginally increased. The stresses and strain at the bifurcation were significantly lesser than the stresses and strain of the currently existing techniques used in the treatment of bifurcation lesions though the study was primarily focused only on the utility of the new technology. There is a potential for a novel Tram-stent method in the treatment of coronary bifurcation lesions.  相似文献

Recent clinical studies of the percutaneous transvenous mitral annuloplasty (PTMA) devices have shown a short-term reduction of mitral regurgitation after implantation. However, adverse events associated with the devices such as compression and perforation of vessel branches, device migration and fracture were reported. In this study, a finite element analysis was carried out to investigate the biomechanical interaction between the proximal anchor stent of a PTMA device and the coronary sinus (CS) vessel in three steps including: (i) the stent release and contact with the CS wall, (ii) the axial pull t the stent connector and (iii) the pressure inflation of the vessel wall. To investigate the impact of the material properties of tissues and stents on the interactive responses, the CS vessel was modelled with human and porcine material properties, and the proximal stent was modelled with two different Nitinol materials with one being stiffer than the other. The results indicated that the vessel wall stresses and contact forces imposed by the stents were much higher in the human model than the porcine model. However, the mechanical differences induced by the two stent types were relatively small. The softer stent exhibited a better fatigue safety factor when deployed in the human model than in the porcine model. These results underscored the importance of the CS tissue mechanical properties. Vessel wall stress and stent radial force obtained in the human model were higher than those obtained in the porcine model, which also brought up questions as to the validity of using the porcine model to assess device mechanical function. The quantification of these biomechanical interactions can offer scientific insight into the development and optimisation of the PTMA device design.  相似文献

Galium aparine is a herbaceous climbing plant that attaches to host plants mainly via its leaves, which are covered by hooked trichomes. Although such hooks are found on both leaf surfaces, the leaves of G. aparine are mainly positioned upon the leaves of supporting plants and rarely beneath. In order to understand the mechanism underlying this observation, we have studied structural and mechanical properties of single leaf hooks, frictional properties of leaf surfaces, turgor pressure in different leaf tissues and bending properties of the leaves in different directions. Abaxial and adaxial leaf hooks differ significantly in orientation, distribution, structure and mechanical properties. In accordance with these differences, friction properties of leaves depend on the direction of the applied force and differ significantly between both leaf surfaces. This results in a ratchet mechanism. Abaxial leaf hooks provide strong attachment upon the leaves of adjacent plants, whereas adaxial hooks cause a gliding-off from the underside of the leaves of host plants. Thus, the leaves of G. aparine can function as attachment organs, and simultaneously orient themselves advantageously for their photosynthetic function. Further adaptations in turgor pressure or concerning an anisotropy of the flexural stiffness of the leaves have not been found.  相似文献

The presented study details a combined experimental and computational method to assess and compare the mechanical behavior of the main body of 4 different stent graft designs. The mechanical response to a flat plate compression and radial crimping of the devices is derived and related to geometrical and material features of different stent designs. The finite element modeling procedure is used to complement the experimental results and conduct a solution sensitivity study. Finite element evaluations of the mechanical behavior match well with experimental findings and are used as a quantitative basis to discuss design characteristics of the different devices.  相似文献

Background

New Caledonian crows use a range of foraging tools, and are the only non-human species known to craft hooks. Based on a small number of observations, their manufacture of hooked stick tools has previously been described as a complex, multi-stage process. Tool behaviour is shaped by genetic predispositions, individual and social learning, and/or ecological influences, but disentangling the relative contributions of these factors remains a major research challenge. The properties of raw materials are an obvious, but largely overlooked, source of variation in tool-manufacture behaviour. We conducted experiments with wild-caught New Caledonian crows, to assess variation in their hooked stick tool making, and to investigate how raw-material properties affect the manufacture process.

Results

In Experiment 1, we showed that New Caledonian crows’ manufacture of hooked stick tools can be much more variable than previously thought (85 tools by 18 subjects), and can involve two newly-discovered behaviours: ‘pulling’ for detaching stems and bending of the tool shaft. Crows’ tool manufactures varied significantly: in the number of different action types employed; in the time spent processing the hook and bending the tool shaft; and in the structure of processing sequences. In Experiment 2, we examined the interaction of crows with raw materials of different properties, using a novel paradigm that enabled us to determine subjects’ rank-ordered preferences (42 tools by 7 subjects). Plant properties influenced: the order in which crows selected stems; whether a hooked tool was manufactured; the time required to release a basic tool; and, possibly, the release technique, the number of behavioural actions, and aspects of processing behaviour. Results from Experiment 2 suggested that at least part of the natural behavioural variation observed in Experiment 1 is due to the effect of raw-material properties.

Conclusions

Our discovery of novel manufacture behaviours indicates a plausible scenario for the evolutionary origins, and gradual refinement, of New Caledonian crows’ hooked stick tool making. Furthermore, our experimental demonstration of a link between raw-material properties and aspects of tool manufacture provides an alternative hypothesis for explaining regional differences in tool behaviours observed in New Caledonian crows, and some primate species.

Venous valve incompetence has been implicated in diseases ranging from chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) to intracranial venous hypertension. However, while the mechanical properties of venous valve leaflet tissues are central to CVI biomechanics and mechanobiology, neither stress–strain curves nor tangent moduli have been reported. Here, equibiaxial tensile mechanical tests were conducted to assess the tangent modulus, strength and anisotropy of venous valve leaflet tissues from bovine jugular veins. Valvular tissues were stretched to 60% strain in both the circumferential and radial directions, and leaflet tissue stress–strain curves were generated for proximal and distal valves (i.e., valves closest and furthest from the right heart, respectively). Toward linking mechanical properties to leaflet microstructure and composition, Masson’s trichrome and Verhoeff–Van Gieson staining and collagen assays were conducted. Results showed: (1) Proximal bovine jugular vein venous valves tended to be bicuspid (i.e., have two leaflets), while distal valves tended to be tricuspid; (2) leaflet tissues from proximal valves exhibited approximately threefold higher peak tangent moduli in the circumferential direction than in the orthogonal radial direction (i.e., proximal valve leaflet tissues were anisotropic; \(p<0.01\)); (3) individual leaflets excised from the same valve apparatus appeared to exhibit different mechanical properties (i.e., intra-valve variability); and (4) leaflets from distal valves exhibited a trend of higher soluble collagen concentrations than proximal ones (i.e., inter-valve variability). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study reporting biaxial mechanical properties of venous valve leaflet tissues. These results provide a baseline for studying venous valve incompetence at the tissue level and a quantitative basis for prosthetic venous valve design.  相似文献

There is a growing interest in virtual tools to assist clinicians in evaluating different procedures and devices for endovascular treatment. In the present study we use finite element analysis to investigate the influence of stent design and vessel geometry for stent assisted coiling of intracranial aneurysms. Nine virtual stenting procedures were performed: three nitinol stent designs ((i) an open cell stent resembling the Neuroform, (ii) a generic stiff and (iii) a more flexible closed cell design), were deployed in three patient-specific cerebral aneurysmatic vessels. We investigated the percentage of strut area covering the aneurysm neck, the straightening induced on the cerebrovasculature by the stent placement (quantified by the reduction in tortuosity), and stent apposition to the wall (quantified as the percentage of struts within 0.2mm of the vessel). The results suggest that the open cell design better covers the aneurysm neck (11.0±1.1%) compared to both the stiff (7.8±1.6%) and flexible (8.7±1.6%) closed cell stents, and induces less straightening of the vessel (-5.1±1.6% vs. -42.9±9.8% and -26.9±11.9% ). The open cell design has, however, less struts apposing well to the vessel wall (56.0±6.4%) compared to the flexible (73.4±4.6%) and stiff (70.4±5.1%) closed cell design. With the presented study, we hope to contribute to and improve aneurysm treatment, using a novel patient specific environment as a possible pre-operative tool to evaluate mechanical stent behavior in different vascular geometries.  相似文献

Rat sperm that are demembranated with Triton X-100 and reactivated with Mg-ATP show a strong mechanical response to the presence of free calcium ion. At pCa < 4, the midpiece region of the flagellum develops a strong and sustained curvature that gives the cell the overall appearance of a fishhook [Lindemann and Goltz, 1988: Cell Motil. Cytoskeleton 10:420-431]. In the present study, the force and torque that maintain the calcium-induced hook have been examined quantitatively. In addition, full-length and shortened flagella were manipulated to evaluate the plasticity of the hooks and determined the critical length necessary for maintaining the curvature. The hooks were found to be highly resilient, returning to their original configuration (>95%) after being straightened and released. The results from manipulating the shortened flagella suggest that the force holding the hook in the curved configuration is generated in the basal 60 microm of the flagellum. The force required to straighten the calcium-induced hooks was measured with force-calibrated glass microprobes, and the bending torque was calculated from the measured force. The force and torque required to straighten the flagellum were found to be proportional to the change in curvature of the hooked region of the flagellum, suggesting an elastic-like behavior. The average torque to open the hooks to a straight position was 2.6 (+/-1.4) x 10(-7) dyne x cm (2.6 x 10(-14) N x m) and the apparent stiffness was 4.3 (+/-1.3) x 10(-10) dyne x cm(2) (4.3 x 10(-19) N x m(2)). The stiffness of the hook was determined to be approximately one quarter the rigor stiffness of a rat sperm flagellum measured under comparable conditions.  相似文献

Rapid endothelialization of cardiovascular stents is needed to reduce stent thrombosis and to avoid anti-platelet therapy which can reduce bleeding risk. The feasibility of using magnetic forces to capture and retain endothelial outgrowth cells (EOC) labeled with super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) has been shown previously. But this technique requires the development of a mechanically functional stent from a magnetic and biocompatible material followed by in-vitro and in-vivo testing to prove rapid endothelialization. We developed a weakly ferromagnetic stent from 2205 duplex stainless steel using computer aided design (CAD) and its design was further refined using finite element analysis (FEA). The final design of the stent exhibited a principal strain below the fracture limit of the material during mechanical crimping and expansion. One hundred stents were manufactured and a subset of them was used for mechanical testing, retained magnetic field measurements, in-vitro cell capture studies, and in-vivo implantation studies. Ten stents were tested for deployment to verify if they sustained crimping and expansion cycle without failure. Another 10 stents were magnetized using a strong neodymium magnet and their retained magnetic field was measured. The stents showed that the retained magnetism was sufficient to capture SPION-labeled EOC in our in-vitro studies. SPION-labeled EOC capture and retention was verified in large animal models by implanting 1 magnetized stent and 1 non-magnetized control stent in each of 4 pigs. The stented arteries were explanted after 7 days and analyzed histologically. The weakly magnetic stents developed in this study were capable of attracting and retaining SPION-labeled endothelial cells which can promote rapid healing.  相似文献

Use of live bait for angling of muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, is popular in Wisconsin. A traditional method utilizes a large hook through the bait fish’s snout, which requires the muskellunge to swallow the bait prior to hook set. Adult muskellunge (>76 cm; 30 in) were held in lined hatchery ponds and caught while fishing with live bait on 10/0 size single hooks. The leader was cut and the muskellunge was released when hooked in the stomach. Survival was monitored for up to 1 year. No immediate ( <24 h) mortality occurred. However, 22% of hooked muskellunge died within 50 days and 83% died within 1 year. Necropsies revealed extensive trauma to the stomach and other organs from hooks, along with systemic bacterial infections. Highest mortality on both hooked and control fish occurred over winter through spring. This peak mortality may be associated with natural stressors that occur during the spring spawning period. Mortality rates observed in this study are considered unacceptable for trophy management of muskellunge. Although use of live bait for muskellunge is traditional in Wisconsin, terminal tackle such as quick-strike rigs that hook fish in the mouth or buccal cavity should enhance the chances a released muskellunge will survive.  相似文献

Background

Recent clinical studies have shown that recanalization rates are lower in stent-assisted coil embolization than in coiling alone in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms.

Objective

This study aimed to assess and compare the hemodynamic effect of stent struts and straightening of vessels by stent placement on reducing flow velocity in sidewall aneurysms, with the goal of reducing recanalization rates.

Methods

We evaluated 16 sidewall aneurysms treated with Enterprise stents. We performed computational fluid dynamics simulations using patient-specific geometries before and after treatment, with or without stent struts.

Results

Stent placement straightened vessels by a mean (±standard deviation) of 12.9°±13.1° 6 months after treatment. Placement of stent struts in the initial vessel geometries reduced flow velocity in aneurysms by 23.1%±6.3%. Straightening of vessels without stent struts reduced flow velocity by 9.6%±12.6%. Stent struts had significantly stronger effects on reducing flow velocity than straightening (P = 0.004, Wilcoxon test). Deviation of the effects was larger by straightening than by stent struts (P = 0.01, F-test). The combination of stent struts and straightening reduced flow velocity by 32.6%±12.2%. There was a trend that larger inflow angles produced a larger reduction in flow velocity by straightening of vessels (P = 0.16).

Conclusion

In sidewall aneurysms, stent struts have stronger effects (approximately 2 times) on reduction in flow velocity than straightening of vessels. Hemodynamic effects by straightening vary in each case and can be predicted by inflow angles of pre-operative vessel geometry. These results may be useful to design a treatment strategy for reducing recanalization rates.  相似文献

Bovine pericardium, stabilized with glutaraldehyde, is used widely in the construction of heart valve substitutes, but the design and construction of valve substitutes from this material are empirically based. Collagenous tissue can support tension, but experimental evidence indicates that flexure-induced compressive stresses can lead to fatigue failure. This study uses experimental results obtained from cyclic uniaxial load tests to predict the type and magnitude of operational stresses which occur in pericardial heterograft leaflets. Both Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio varied with uniaxial loading in pericardium, chemically modified free of tension. Leaflet stresses were analysed by using effective incremental representations of these parameters. In leaflets with unrestricted rotation at the point of attachment to the stent, the mid-plane tensions always exceeded the bending stresses, and no zones of leaflet compression were predicted. In contrast, with totally restricted leaflet rotation induced by clamping (possibly between a male and female frame) the bending stresses were greater than the mid-plane tensions at the hinge line and significant compressive stresses were predicted at this site. If elastic boundary conditions were introduced at the stent (possibly by wrapping the stent in pericardium) then the compressive stresses were reduced as the degree of elasticity was increased. Glutaraldehyde fixation of the pericardium under load produced a stiffer material; higher compressive stresses at the stent and significant increases in total stress were predicted for this tissue. The application of elevated pressure loading also increased the compressive and total stresses in the leaflet. Finally, it was shown that bicuspid leaflets were likely to experience higher stresses than tricuspid leaflets. This simple stress analysis should help valve designers of pericardial heterografts to identify those conditions which lead to tissue compression, high total stress, and ultimately material fatigue.  相似文献

We describe a late complication in a 75-year-old man 50 years after repair of a coarctation of the aorta (CoA). Two years after an aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair and radiofrequency MAZE the patient presented with dyspnoea and right-sided heart failure, based on a large pseudoaneurysm of the descending aorta, compressing the main bronchus and possibly temporarily the pulmonary arterial system. After sealing the aneurysm with an endovascular stent the patient recovered uneventfully. Recommendations are made for follow-up in patients after repair of CoA. Understanding the distribution of bycaught sea turtles could inform conservation strategies and priorities. This research analyses the distribution of turtles caught as longline fisheries bycatch on the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean. This research collected 18,142 bycatch observations and 47.1 million hooks from large-scale Taiwanese longline vessels in the Atlantic Ocean from June 2002 to December 2013. The coverage rates were ranged from 0.48% to 17.54% by year. Seven hundred and sixty-seven turtles were caught, and the major species were leatherback (59.8%), olive ridley (27.1%) and loggerhead turtles (8.7%). Most olive ridley (81.7%) and loggerhead (82.1%) turtles were hooked, while the leatherbacks were both hooked (44.0%) and entangled (31.8%). Depending on the species, 21.4% to 57.7% were dead when brought onboard. Most of the turtles were caught in tropical areas, especially in the Gulf of Guinea (15°N-10°S, 30°W-10°E), but loggerheads were caught in the south Atlantic Ocean (25°S-35°S, 40°W-10°E and 30°S-40°S, 55°W-45°W). The bycatch rate was the highest at 0.030 per 1000 hooks for leatherbacks in the tropical area. The bycatch rates of olive ridley ranged from 0 to 0.010 per thousand hooks. The loggerhead bycatch rates were higher in the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean and ranged from 0.0128 to 0.0239 per thousand hooks. Due to the characteristics of the Taiwanese deep-set longline fleet, bycatch rates were lower than those of coastal longline fisheries, but mortality rates were higher because of the long hours of operation. Gear and bait modification should be considered to reduce sea turtle bycatch and increase survival rates while reducing the use of shallow hooks would also be helpful.  相似文献
