Data on the qualitative and quantitative composition of resting stages of planktonic microalgae in recent marine sediments of Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) over the period 2000–2007 are presented. A total of sixty one morphological forms of resting stages represented by dinoflagellate and raphidophyte cysts and diatom spores and resting cells were recorded in the sediment samples. This study revealed cysts of the potentially toxic species Alexandrium tamarense, A. cf. minutum, Alexandrium sp., Gymnodinium catenatum (PSP toxin producers), and Protoceratium reticulatum (yessotoxin producer); resting cells of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (potential producer of domoic acid); and cysts of bloom-forming species Cochlodinium cf. polykrikoides and Heterosigma cf. akashiwo.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial patterns of polychaete and oligochaete populations inhabiting intertidal sediments of the Quequén Grande estuary (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) were analysed monthly during a yearly period. Local sediments are poorly selected, very fine sands, with a high percentage of mud. Two sites, located at both banks of the estuary were studied: (1) Site N, with a comparatively steep slope and percentage of mud increasing with sediment depth; (2) Site Q, with a gentle slope and percentage of mud increasing towards the sediment surface. The assemblage of annelids was characterised by a very low specific richness, being composed just by 4 species: the polychaetes Laeonereis acuta, Boccardiella ligerica and Capitella sp., and the tubificid oligochaete Ilyodrilus cf. frantzi. Density of the nereid L. acuta reached a peak in late summer and a minimum in spring. The population of Capitella sp. also showed maximum densities in summer, but collapsed during early fall, disappearing completely from the study area. Densities of I. cf. frantzi were highly variable in time and space. Three of the 4 species showed maximum densities at site Q, where mud content was highest at the sediment surface. At this sampling site, most of the L. acuta population occurred within the upper 8 cm of the substrate. On the contrary, at site N, where mud and organic matter content increased with depth, this species was more abundant at subsurface layers (8–16 cm) than at the sediment surface.  相似文献

Marine mollusc shells enclose a wealth of information on coastal organisms and their environment. Their life history traits as well as (palaeo‐) environmental conditions, including temperature, food availability, salinity and pollution, can be traced through the analysis of their shell (micro‐) structure and biogeochemical composition. Adding to this list, the DNA entrapped in shell carbonate biominerals potentially offers a novel and complementary proxy both for reconstructing palaeoenvironments and tracking mollusc evolutionary trajectories. Here, we assess this potential by applying DNA extraction, high‐throughput shotgun DNA sequencing and metagenomic analyses to marine mollusc shells spanning the last ~7,000 years. We report successful DNA extraction from shells, including a variety of ancient specimens, and find that DNA recovery is highly dependent on their biomineral structure, carbonate layer preservation and disease state. We demonstrate positive taxonomic identification of mollusc species using a combination of mitochondrial DNA genomes, barcodes, genome‐scale data and metagenomic approaches. We also find shell biominerals to contain a diversity of microbial DNA from the marine environment. Finally, we reconstruct genomic sequences of organisms closely related to the Vibrio tapetis bacteria from Manila clam shells previously diagnosed with Brown Ring Disease. Our results reveal marine mollusc shells as novel genetic archives of the past, which opens new perspectives in ancient DNA research, with the potential to reconstruct the evolutionary history of molluscs, microbial communities and pathogens in the face of environmental changes. Other future applications include conservation of endangered mollusc species and aquaculture management.  相似文献

An account is given of the range of pH and Eh in marine and freshwater aquatic sites on one atoll (Aldabra, Indian Ocean). There is a very wide range in values of pH and Eh for both marine and freshwater environments, the range for pH in general being wider in freshwater ones and Eh in marine ones. Photosynthetic microbial communities on lagoon sediments may be arranged in an approximate order of their association with sediments of particular Eh values. These are, from high to low: Scytonema sp., pennate diatoms, Schizothrix sp., Microcoleus chthonoplastes, Hyella balani, purple phototrophic bacteria.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial diversity from two geographical areas of Baja California Sur, Mexico, were studied: Bahia Concepcion, and Ensenada de Aripez. The sites included hypersaline ecosystems, sea bottom, hydrothermal springs, and a shrimp farm. In this report we describe four new morphotypes, two are marine epilithic from Bahia Concepcion, Dermocarpa sp. and Hyella sp. The third, Geitlerinema sp., occurs in thermal springs and in shrimp ponds, and the fourth, Tychonema sp., is from a shrimp pond. The partial sequences of the 16S rRNA genes and the phylogenetic relationship of four cyanobacterial strains (Synechococcus cf. elongatus, Leptolyngbya cf. thermalis, Leptolyngbya sp., and Geitlerinema sp.) are also presented. Polyphasic studies that include the combination of light microscopy, cultures and the comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences provide the most powerful approach currently available to establish the diversity of these oxygenic photosynthetic microorganisms in culture and in nature. Ordovician trimerellacean brachiopod shell beds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The large, thick-shelled, inarticulate brachiopod Eodinobolus forms many conspicuous deposits of shells in the Upper Ordovician limestones of central western New South Wales. Both in situ and reworked shell beds arc preserved at recurrent intervals through the successions, in similar facies of both transgressivc and regressive phases of deposition. In situ shell beds arc best developed in transgressivc sequences, with up to four generations of shells exhibited in the individual in situ beds. These monotypic and very low diversity shell beds are interpreted as having formed in marginal marine, quiet water conditions: (1) on the fringes of an offshore island (in part the Molong High of the Tasman Orogen), with the island still providing a fairly continuous supply of terrigenous material: and, (2) after submergence of the island, on the resulting terrigenous-free, major offshore Bahamas-like platform. This may imply that the shell beds developed in different salinity regimes. Possibly Eodinobolus was capable of tolerating a wider than normal range of salinity, from slightly brackish through normal marine, even to marginally hypersaline. However, in both settings, Eodinobolus, in its role as the dominant member of the respective pioneer community, colonized similar substrates in the low energy mud zone. This appears to suggest depositional environments most directly analogous to those of Palaeozoic virgianid pentamerides, and perhaps also comparable with some modern marginal marine oyster and mussel-bed occurrences. ?Ordovician, Brachiopoda, Eodinobolus, palaeoecology, facies, shell beds. A fungal strain BAP14 isolated from marine sediments of coast in Xiamen city, was found to have the ability to degrade benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and identified as Aspergillus sp. based on 18S rRNA gene sequence. Aspergillus sp. BAP14 was able to remove about 30 and 60% of BaP with initial concentration of 10 mg l−1 in 3 and 12 days of incubation, respectively. Addition of saccharides and low molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons appeared to have effect on the degradation ability, in particularly the addition of lactose and naphthalene. Furthermore, we demonstrated that lipidic particles could be observed in the presence of benzo[a]pyrene based on the morphologic performance of Aspergillus sp. BAP14 through scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively.  相似文献

Anthropogenic inputs of CO2 are changing ocean chemistry and will likely affect calcifying marine organisms, particularly aragonite producers such as pteropods. This work seeks to set a benchmark analysis of pteropod shell properties and variability using nanoindentation and electron microscopy to measure the structural and mechanical properties of Subantarctic pteropod shells (Limacina helicina antarctica) collected in 1998 and 2007. The 1998 shells were collected by a sediment trap deployed at 2000 m, 47°S, 142°E, and the 2007 shells were collected using nets from mixed-layer waters in the region (44°–54°S, 140°–155°E). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the shells are composed of a polycrystalline structure, and no obvious porosity was visible. The hardness and modulus of the shells were measured using shell cross-section nanoindentation, across various regions of the shell from the inner to outer whorl. No change in mechanical properties was found with respect to the region of the shell cross-section probed. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean modulus or hardness of the shells between the 1998 and 2007 data sets. No major changes in the mechanical properties of these pteropod shells were detected between the 1998 and 2007 data sets, and we discuss the possible biases in the sampling techniques in complicating our analysis. However, quantifying the mechanical properties and microstructure of calcified may still provide insights into the responses of calcification to environmental changes, such as ocean acidification.  相似文献

The genus Xenophora comprises species of marine gastropods (Cretaceous-Recent) able to add fragments of various origins to their shell surface. Agglutination potentials vary, from species lacking attachments to species completely covered by agglutinated materials, as in the Mediterranean species Xenophora crispa. Here, we analyse Recent and fossil specimens of Xenophora crispa from the Mediterranean area using SEM and XRD, to better understand their biomineralization patterns and the mechanisms leading to the agglutination of shells, bioclasts and lithoclasts, and their evolution in time. We also provide new data on poorly studied gastropod shell microstructures. We conclude that: (1) most of the Xenophora crispa shell consists of an aragonitic crossed lamellar fabric, but fibrous to spherulitic prismatic fabrics, seemingly of calcite, have been found in the columella and peripheral edge (the thickest parts of the shell); (2) attachment of objects is mediated by a prismatic microstructure, indicating that this may be the most functional fabric in attachment areas in molluscs; and (3) the functional purpose of the agglutination in Xenophora crispa may be related to a snowshoe strategy to successfully colonize muddy substrates, coupled with tactile and olfactory camouflage. Indeed, this species secretes in the columella and peripheral edge a less dense and a more organic rich calcitic fabric, possibly to lighten the shell thickest parts in order not to sink in soft sediments and to facilitate the shell raising from the substrate to create a protected feeding area. This behaviour seems to have been maintained by X. crispa over 2 My time span.  相似文献

We investigated the ability of bacterial communities to colonize and dissolve two biogenic carbonates (Foraminifera and oyster shells). Bacterial carbonate dissolution in the upper water column is postulated to be driven by metabolic activity of bacteria directly colonising carbonate surfaces and the subsequent development of acidic microenvironments. We employed a combination of microsensor measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and image analysis and molecular documentation of colonising bacteria to monitor microbial processes and document changes in shell surface topography. Bacterial communities rapidly colonised shell surfaces, forming dense biofilms with extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) deposits. Despite this, we found no evidence of bacterially mediated carbonate dissolution. Dissolution was not indicated by Ca2+ microprofiles, nor was changes in shell surface structure related to the presence of colonizing bacteria. Given the short time (days) settling carbonate material is actually in the twilight zone (500–1000 m), it is highly unlikely that microbial metabolic activity on directly colonised shells plays a significant role in dissolving settling carbonates in the shallow ocean.  相似文献

Tributyltin (TBT) has been widely used as antifouling in marine environments, producing imposex in gastropod females (i.e. neoformation of a vas deferens and/or a penis) and shell malformations in bivalves. However, effects of TBT and other pollutants from high marine traffic zones on the shell of gastropods have been little explored. Shell shape in volutids Odontocymbiola magellanica from a harbor polluted site (P) has been compared with that of animals from a non-polluted location (NP) using 3D geometric morphometrics. Also, the microstructure and density of shells from both populations were analyzed. Prior studies made in the same area (Golfo Nuevo, Patagonia, Argentina) based on traditional multivariate morphometrics showed some differences in size but was unable to detect differences in shell shape among O. magellanica from P and NP areas. Departing from 3D geometric morphometrics, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and computed tomography (CT) techniques, we have registered the presence of patent differences on shell shape and structure in animals from polluted (P) and non-polluted (NP) areas. In 100% of shells from the NP area we register three calcium carbonate layers (prismatic, cross lamellar and amorphous) and higher densities, while in 50% of the shells collected at the P area the external layer (amorphous) was lacking. Furthermore, a body weight loss of around 30% and a shell weight loss of 20% were registered in animals from the P area. Our combined results suggest that the coordinated use of 3D geometrics morphometrics, CT scan and SEM could be of great utility in order to detect the effect of environmental variables on Neogastropods shell shape and structure.  相似文献

Symbiont‐bearing and non‐symbiotic marine bivalves were used as model organisms to establish biosignatures for the detection of distinctive symbioses in ancient bivalves. For this purpose, the isotopic composition of lipids (δ13C) and bulk organic shell matrix (δ13C, δ34S, δ15N) from shells of several thiotrophic, phototrophic, or non‐symbiotic bivalves were compared (phototrophic: Fragum fragum, Fragum unedo, Tridacna maxima; thiotrophic: Codakia tigerina, Fimbria fimbriata, Anodontia sp.; non‐symbiotic: Tapes dorsatus, Vasticardium vertebratum, Scutarcopagia sp.). ?13C values of bulk organic shell matrices, most likely representing mainly original shell protein/chitin biomass, were depleted in thio‐ and phototrophic bivalves compared to non‐symbiotic bivalves. As the bulk organic shell matrix also showed a major depletion of δ15N (down to –2.2 ‰) for thiotrophic bivalves, combined δ13C and δ15N values are useful to differentiate between thio‐, phototrophic, and non‐symbiotic lifestyles. However, the use of these isotopic signatures for the study of ancient bivalves is limited by the preservation of the bulk organic shell matrix in fossils. Substantial alteration was clearly shown by detailed microscopic analyses of fossil (late Pleistocene) T. maxima and Trachycardium lacunosum shell, demonstrating a severe loss of quantity and quality of bulk organic shell matrix with time. Likewise, the composition and δ13C‐values of lipids from empty shells indicated that a large part of these compounds derived from prokaryotic decomposers. The use of lipids from ancient shells for the reconstruction of the bivalve's life style therefore appears to be restricted.  相似文献

The rigid skeletal frameworks of two heliospongid genera from the Bethany Falls Limestone (Pennsylvanian) of Missouri provided suitable sites of attachment for other marine invertebrates in a quiet water environment. A cluster of three horn corals attached apically to one Heliospongia while it was upright. Other horn corals are in lateral contact with ?Coelocladiella fragments and may have attached to fallen specimens. The distribution of acrothoracic barnacle borings and membraniporiform bryozoans on ?Coelocladiella fragments suggest that the sponges were in an upright position when the epizoans lived. Calcareous worm tubes and shell scars of Derbyia are also associated with ?Coelocladiella. The sponges themselves became established on a soft carbonate mud bottom by growing on productacean shells and possibly fallen blades of calcareous algae. Irregularities in their form indicate that conditions were crowded on limited sites of attachment. The organisms in the assemblage are ecologically coherent and in situ. Ecological requirements of associated organisms and sponge morphologies indicate: (1) the energy of the environment was low to moderate, (2) the rate of deposition was slow and (3) the substrate was a soft carbonate mud.  相似文献

An exceptionally well-preserved collection of Tertiary opisthobranch molluscs from the Aquitaine Basin, France, includes species of the order Notaspidea [ Umbraculum sanctipaulensis sp. nov., Tylodina perversa (Gmelin), Spiricella unguiculus Rang and Des Moulins, Berthella aquitaniensis sp. nov., Berthella ateles sp. nov.], of the order Anaspidea [ Akera cf. bullata Mu¨ller, Floribella corrugata (Cossmann), Floribella cossmanni sp. nov., Floribella rozieri sp. nov., Limondinia ornata gen. et sp. nov.] and of the order Sacoglossa [ Volvatella faviae sp. nov.]. Berthella aquitaniensis B. ateles V. faviae are the first fossil records of the families Volvatellidae and Pleurobranchidae. Floribella plicifera (Cossmann) and F. corrugata , originally assigned to the genus Philine , belong to the genus Floribella and constitute the oldest records of this genus. The fossil evidence indicates that in Umbraculum laudunensis and U. sanctipaulensis the shell probably covered most of the animal, whereas in the Recent U. umbraculum the shell only covers the central portion of the body. Tylodina perversa could be an old species that appeared during the early Miocene, more than 21 Ma. The Recent shells of Akera bullata are indistinguishable from fossils as old as the mid Eocene, but it may be biologically unrealistic to consider them to be the same species. The European species of Floribella evolved from the bullomorph shells of the early Eocene forms to the elongate shells of the early Miocene. The genus Volvatella is another example of marine tropical disjoint distributions and an excellent ecological indicator.  相似文献

A new aberrant species of the planorbid genus Gyraulus, Gyraulus luguhuensis n. sp., is described from Lake Lugu (Lugu-hu, in Chinese), Southwest China. The generic assignment with Gyraulus is based on features of the genital anatomy that are characteristic for members of that genus, in particular the presence of a chitinized penial stylet. Gyraulus luguhuensis n. sp. differs from most other congeners by its large, thick shell with an elevated spire. Similarly, aberrant shells are known from congeners in other Ancient Lakes worldwide indicating a potentially convergent evolution of shell characteristics in exclusively lacustrine species. Gyraulus luguhuensis differs from other lacustrine Gyraulus species with similarly large shells in having a sub-terminal penis pore and an unkeeled shell.  相似文献

Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) is a recently discovered new microbial process performed by the Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera with an unusual intra-aerobic pathway, but there is no report about n-damo bacteria in marine environments. M. oxyfera-like sequences were successfully retrieved for the first time from both surface and subsurface ocean sediments of the South China Sea (SCS) using both 16S rRNA and pmoA genes as biomarkers and PCR amplification in this study. The majority of M. oxyfera-like 16S rRNA gene-based PCR amplified sequences from the SCS sediments formed a new group distinctively different from those detected in freshwater habitats and the information is consistent phylogenetically with those obtained from the pmoA gene. This study showed the existence of n-damo in ocean sediments and suggests that marine sediments harbor n-damo phylotypes different from those in the freshwater. This finding here expands our understanding on the distribution of n-damo bacteria to marine ecosystem and implies their potential contribution to the marine C and N cycling.  相似文献

Abstract: Chondrichthyans are newly reported from the autochthonous Wordian Khuff Formation (middle Permian), cropping out in well‐exposed, low‐palaeolatitude sections in the interior Haushi‐Huqf area of Oman. The shark remains comprise isolated teeth, dermal denticles and fin spines and have been recovered by processing limestone in buffered acetic acid from bulk rock samples. The fauna consists of mainly ctenacanthiform and hybodontiform taxa, identified as Glikmanius cf. myachkovensis, Glikmanius culmenis sp. nov., Omanoselache hendersoni gen. et sp. nov., Omanoselache angiolinii gen. et sp. nov., cf. Omanoselache sp., Reesodus underwoodi gen et sp. nov., Teresodus amplexus gen. et sp. nov., Gunnellodus bellistriatus, Khuffia lenis gen. et sp. nov., Khuffia prolixa gen. et sp. nov. and Euselachii sp. indet. Additional specimens include rare teeth of the lonchidiid cf. ‘Palaeozoic Genus 1’ sp., of the neoselachian Cooleyella cf. fordi and a further indeterminate neoselachian, of an indeterminate petalodont and of the holocephalan Deltodus aff. mercurei and Solenodus cf. crenulatus. Fin spines add a further two taxa, Nemacanthus sp. and Amelacanthus cf. sulcatus, which have neoselachian affinities and therefore an unclear relationship to the recovered teeth. The occurrence of Nemacanthus within this Wordian fauna represents the oldest record of this taxon and its only known occurrence in the Palaeozoic. Of the remaining genera, Glikmanius has previously been recorded from the Wordian, whereas for all the others, this study represents their youngest known stratigraphic occurrence and first occurrence in Guadalupian (middle Permian) strata. This adds significantly to our knowledge of the global diversity of chondrichthyans preceding the end‐Guadalupian biotic crisis. Palaeogeographically, for all taxa, this study represents the first record from the western fringe of the marine Neotethyan basin, and only Cooleyella was previously known from the southern (Gondwanan) part of the Pangaean continental margin.  相似文献

Functioning of microbial communities in surface sediments of the Haakon Mosby underwater mud volcano (lat. 72°N) and in gas seepage fields of the Vestnesa Ridge was investigated using Mir-1 and Mir-2 deep-sea submersibles during the 40th voyage of the research vessel Academician Mstislav Keldysh. Large areas of sedimentary deposits of the Haakon Mosby mud volcano (HMMV) and pockmarks of the Vestnesa Ridge (VR) are covered with bacterial mats 0.1 to 0.5 cm thick. The microbial community making up bacterial mats of the HMMV was dominated by large filamentous bacteria with filaments measuring up to 100 m in length and 2 to 8 m in width. The occurrence of rosettes allowed the observed filamentous bacteria to be referred to the morphologically similar genera Leucothrix or Thiothrix. Three morphological types of filamentous bacteria were identified in bacterial mats covering VR pockmarks. Filaments of type one are morphologically similar with representatives of the genera Thioploca or Desmanthos. Type two filaments had numerous inclusions of sulfur and resembled representatives of the genus Thiothrix. The third morphological type was constituted by single filaments made up of tightly connected disk-like cells and can be assigned to the genus Beggiatoa. The rates of methane oxidation (up to 1570 l C/(dm3 day)) and sulfate reduction (up to 17 mg S/(dm3day)) measured in the surface sediments of HMMV and VR were close to the maximum rates of these processes observed in heavily polluted regions of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. High rates of microbiological processes correlated with the high number of bacteria. The rate of methane production in sediments studied was notably lower and ranged from 0.1 to 3.5 CH4/(dm3 day). Large areas of the HMMV caldera were populated by pogonophoras, represented by the two species Sclerolinum sp. and Oligobrachia sp. The mass development of Sclerolinum sp. in the HMMV caldera was by the activity of aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria localized inside the cells of these animals. Bacterial cells were also found in the trophosome tissue of Oligobrachia sp., but in cells of these bacteria, we did not observe the membrane structures typical of methanotrophs. The localization pattern of pogonophoras on the surface of reduced sediments suggests that the predominant bacteria in Oligobrachia tissues are sulfur-oxidizing endosymbionts.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The conoidean family Drilliidae Olsson, 1964 is a species-rich lineage of marine gastropods, showing a high degree of diversification in comparison to other families of Conoidea. Despite intensive molecular phylogenetic studies during the last decade that have led to notable rearrangements of conoidean systematics, the genus- and species-level taxonomy of Drilliidae has not thus far been affected and remains entirely based on shell features. In the current study we revisit species delimitation in a morphological cluster of species from the Indo-Pacific referred to as the Clavus canalicularis complex, using an integrative taxonomy approach. The species in the complex possess robust thick-walled shells typically over 15?mm in height with sculpture of prominent rounded nodules located at the whorl’s shoulder, sometimes sharp and squamiform, or producing long spines. We find that in addition to five known species, the complex comprises four new species. These are described as Clavus brianmayi n. sp. (New Caledonia), Clavus davidgilmouri n. sp. (the Philippines), Clavus andreolbrichi n. sp. (Vanuatu and New Ireland) and Clavus kirkhammetti n. sp. (Madagascar). Clavus exasperatus (Reeve, 1843), which was previously considered widely distributed in Indo-Pacific, is shown to be confined to the western Indian Ocean.  相似文献
