Opportunistic sightings of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and a leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx at Gough Island (40°20′S, 09°54′W) in the South Atlantic Ocean represent the northernmost island records for vagrant Antarctic fur seals, and only the second for a vagrant leopard seal at Gough Island. Some ten different individual Antarctic fur seals were sighted on a single day, up to seven on a single beach. An overall total of 18 individuals were recorded over a 7-week period in October/November 2005, before the onset of the breeding (pupping) season of the resident population of Subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis. Most were immature, male and mostly in good condition (n = 11, 61%); one mature male and six putative females were also present. All had departed after 23 November, although only a fraction of the available beaches was searched. 相似文献

Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella mainly breed at islands south of the Antarctic Polar Front, but stragglers occasionally occur farther north, with records from Gough Island (40°S, 10°W) in the central South Atlantic Ocean in October/November 2005 and September/October 2009. We report the first record from Tristan da Cunha (37°S, 12°W) in September 2013, and another individual that was observed at Gough Island. Both individuals were lean, lethargic subadult males that were present before the onset of the breeding (pupping) season of the resident populations of subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis. 相似文献

The Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella, in the eastern South Pacific Ocean, first reported on Hoste Island, Cape Horn in 1973, and then on the Juan Fernandez Archipelago
in 1982 and 1983, was recorded again in October and December 2009 on the southern coast of Chile. Three different individuals
were seen simultaneously on a single day at Punta Dungenes, Magellan Strait, and a fourth individual was sighted at the northeastern
coast of Almirantazgo Sound, Tierra del Fuego. These records represent the first sightings of live Arctocephalus gazella in southern Chile. Although it is difficult to establish both their origin and rationale for dispersion outside of their
distribution range, the substantial breeding population recovery in South Georgia and food shortages during the breeding and

The number of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella hauled out at Signy Island in the South Orkneys was monitored annually between 1977 and 2008. Over the study period seal
abundance showed a tenfold increase, from a minimum of 1,643 seals in 1978 to a maximum of 21,303 in 1994. The majority of
individuals observed were young adult males, likely to be migrants from South Georgia, with small numbers of female seals
and only 65 pups recorded during the survey period. Variability in counts showed a similar pattern to Laurie Island, also
in the South Orkneys archipelago, suggesting a similar annual immigration of seals to these two islands. The date of first
seal arrival was correlated with the date of fast-ice breakout at Factory Cove, Signy Island, and years in which break out
was exceptionally late (>21 December) corresponded with years of reduced seal abundance. While the presence of fast-ice during
the early breeding season may currently inhibit the establishment of a major breeding population of fur seals at Signy Island,
it is important that routine monitoring should continue, particularly in the light of current patterns of climate warming

A vagrant adult male Subantarctic fur seal Arctocephalus tropicalis was observed among Antarctic fur seals A. gazella at Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, Antarctica, which is located to ~4,190 and ~5,939 km from the nearest breeding colonies of Subantarctic fur seals. Although the colony of origin of this animal and the reason for its movement outside its distribution range are unknown, this sighting shows the high dispersal capacity of this species and provides an insight into possible changes in its distribution. Although this vagrant was not observed with females Antarctic fur seal, news sightings in the future could result in viable hybrid, and introgressive hybridization could represent a threat for Cape Shirreff population recovery, if still the population way to go to recover to presailing levels. 相似文献

The study of scats of adult male Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella (AFS) revealed occasional frequent capture of penguins. Although AFS adult males have been occasionally reported to kill
king penguins Aptenodytes patagonicus at the shore, here we report the first observations of at-sea predation by AFS on adult king penguins in the Crozet archipelago,
southern Indian Ocean. During our 20 days survey, we observed 17 penguins attacked and either severely injured or killed and
consumed. Only AFS adult males were seen catching king penguins successfully. Some adult females and sub-adults also attempted
to catch penguins, either at sea or in land, and so did subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis individuals. Our results confirm the ability of fur seals to catch and predate large seabirds, even at sea. 相似文献

The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at the Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula, by the analysis of 31 and 149 scats collected from January to March 1998 and 2000, respectively. Overall, fish and krill, followed by penguins and squids, were the most frequent prey and constituted the bulk of the diet. The importance of the remaining taxa represented in the samples (octopods, gastropods, bivalves, isopods, polychaetes and poriferans) was negligible. Among fish, channichthyids constituted the bulk of the diet, with Chionodraco rastrospinosus and Chaenodraco wilsoni, followed by the nototheniid, Pleuragramma antarcticum, being the main prey. The myctophid, Electrona antarctica, was the most frequent and numerous fish prey. The results are discussed and compared with those reported for the South Shetland Islands, the closest area for which similar information is available. 相似文献

Maternal attendance behaviour was studied in Antarctic (Arctocephalus gazella) and subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) which breed sympatrically at subantarctic Macquarie Island. Data on attendance were obtained using telemetric methods. Both
species undertook two types of foraging trips: overnight foraging trips which were of less than 1 day duration and occurred
exclusively overnight, and extended foraging trips which lasted longer than 1 day. The mean duration of overnight foraging
trips was 0.43 and 0.39 days, while the duration of extended foraging trips was 3.6 and 3.8 days in A. gazella and A. tropicalis, respectively. The duration of overnight and extended foraging trips did not differ significantly between species. Two types
of shore attendance bouts that differed in duration were also observed in these species. Short attendance bouts lasted less
than 0.9 days, while long attendance bouts lasted longer than 0.9 days. Short attendance bouts lasted 0.4 and 0.5 days, while
long attendance bouts lasted 1.6 and 1.7 days in A. gazella and A. tropicalis, respectively, and did not differ significantly between species. The most significant differences between the attendance
behaviour of both species was in the percentage of foraging time allocated to overnight foraging trips (15% and 25% in A. gazella and A. tropicalis, respectively), and the percentage of time spent ashore (30% and 38% in A. gazella and A. tropicalis, respectively). The nearness of pelagic waters to Macquarie Island is considered to be the main reason that lactating females
are able to undertake overnight foraging trips. These trips may be used by females as a means of optimising the costs of fasting
and nursing ashore. Females may be able to save energy by only nursing pups when milk transfer efficiencies are high, and
reduce the time and energy costs of fasting ashore when milk transfer efficiency is low. Of the female A. gazella that still carried transmitters at the end of lactation, 83% continued regular attendance for between 21 and 150 days post-lactation
(when data collection ceased). Overwintering of A. gazella females at breeding sites has not been previously reported in other populations.

Summary Relationships between size, body condition, age and feeding-attendance patterns during pup rearing of female Antacrtic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and their effects on the timing of birth and weaning, pup weight, growth and condition were studied at South Georgia in 1981–1982. Twenty-seven (6 male, 21 female) mother-pup pairs were followed from birth to weaning. The analysis of maternal effects was limited to female pups because of the small sample size of male weaners. High weaning weight was associated with those female pups whose mothers spent more time ashore attending their offspring. Weaning weight showed no relationship with perinatal duration, number of feeding trips to sea, days at sea or date of weaning. A further 63 mother-pup pairs were analysed for the effects of maternal body condition (weight/length), age and timing of birth on offspring body weight and condition. Pup weight and condition were weakly correlated with maternal age in female pups. Male pups born earlier in the season were heavier and in better condition. Maternal and offspring body weight and condition were unrelated. For the Antarctic fur seal population at South Georgia where the food supply was apparently not limiting in summer, maternal condition and foraging time were subordinate to maternal care on land (as expressed by attendance duration) in determining offspring weight at weaning. 相似文献

Population censuses of the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) and the sub-Antarctic fur seal (A. tropicalis) were conducted during the 1994/1995 breeding season at Marion Island. Pup numbers, determined from direct counts and a mark-recapture
experiment, were used to estimate population sizes. Pup numbers of A. tropicalis showed a mean annual change of 2.0% over the previous 6 years, culminating in an estimated total population of 49, 523 for
1994/1995. The population appears to be entering the maturity phase of population growth and may therefore have recovered
from the effects of uncontrolled sealing that ended in the early twentieth century. Numbers at the major colonies on Marion
Island showed little change since 1989 and these sites may have reached carrying capacity. The extension of breeding to other
parts of the island continues. Over the same period, A. gazella pup numbers showed a mean annual change of 17% and the total population numbered 1,205 in 1994/1995. This species has possibly
entered the rapid recolonisation phase of population growth. A few hybrid seals were found.

Maternal expenditure in lactating Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalusgazella) was studied at Heard Island in the 1987 to 1988 summer/autumn.The mean birth mass, growth rate, and mass at 60 days of sonswere significantly greater than those of daughters. Maternalforaging trips lasted on average 5.9 days, and attendance boutslasted 1.5 days. Over the course of this study, foraging tripduration increased from 5.0 to 7.0 days, and attendance durationdeclined from 2.0 to 1.5 days. Pups lost 3.2% of their bodymass/day while their mothers foraged at sea, but gained massrapidly during periods of maternal attendance. Sons gained significantlymore body mass (1.9 kg) compared with daughters (1.3 kg) duringmaternal attendance, suggesting that sons consume more milk.Sex differences in mass gain were unrelated to pup age or bodymass. During 2-day maternal attendance bouts, sons gained mostof their mass (71%) during the first day, and daughters increasedmass at almost the same rate each day. The increase in massby sons during maternal attendance was significantly positivelyrelated to both the duration of their mothers' preceding andsubsequent foraging trips. In contrast, mass gained by daughterswas positively related to the duration of their mothers' attendance.Mass at 60 days age was negatively related to birth date insons, and positively related to birth mass in daughters. Thesedata indicate that (1) greater maternal resources are expendedon sons than on daughters, (2) sons receive greater maternalresources because they are male, and not because of their greaterbirth mass and body size, (3) different factors appear to beimportant in determining high postnatal growth in sons and daughters,and (4) demand for resources by sons can influence maternalbehavior and ultimately the level of resources received. 相似文献

The arrival of Antarctic fur seals at a breeding beach on Bird Island, South Georgia, was studied over five consecutive breeding seasons, 1983 to 1987. Experienced bulls arrived first and established breeding territories on the beaches in anticipation of the arrival of the cows. Male arrival, which is less synchronous within years than female arrival, was significantly later in 1987 than in any other year. Female arrival, estimated by pup birth date where necessary, was highly synchronous; it usually started when 80% or more of potential territory sites were occupied by males. Cows arrived significantly later in 1984 and 1987 than in 1983, 1985 or 1986. The late arrival of both males and females in 1987 is attributed to unusually severe climatic conditions during the preceding winter. The late arrival and reduced fecundity of females in 1984 is attributed to markedly reduced food availability during the austral winter and summer of 1983. Males were not affected in 1984 because they could move away from the area of reduced food availability earlier than females and because they have a more varied diet. Factors influencing the winter distribution, the timing and pattern of arrival and the breeding of male and female Antarctic fur seals are discussed. 相似文献

The present study was undertaken during the summers of 1974/75 and 1975/76. Beaches were classified according to their topography and structure, and colony types were classified according to age and sex composition during the breeding season peak haul-out. Breeding success was measured by the total number of pups born. All available beaches were occupied during the breeding season, breeders predominating on the windward west coast and nonbreeders on the leeward east coast. Principal factors influencing the distribution of breeding fur seals were the topography and physical nature of the beaches, ambient temperatures and solar radiation, sea condition, and exposure to wind and sea spray. The resultant distribution pattern is ascribed to a behavioural thermoregulatory response in A. tropicalis so as to reduce exogenous heat-loading during the summer breeding season. 相似文献

1. Variation in transferrin types were investigated in sympatric populations of two fur seal species which are undergoing limited hybridization at Marion Island. 2. Vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of serum was performed to demonstrate the transferrin types. 3. The two species appear fixed for alternative alleles: A. tropicalis being homozygous for the fast allele, and A. gazella (with one exception) being homozygous for the slow allele, indicating low gene flow between these two species. The single hybrid tested was homozygous for the slow allele. 4. The use of electrophoretically determined transferrin variation holds promise for the investigation of these and other sympatric fur seal populations. 相似文献

Non-offspring maternal care should be common in phocids, but their occurrence would be uncommon among otariids due to the high costs of raising offspring, particularly lactation, and an efficient recognition system that allow for accurate recognition during the frequent mother–pup re-associations. However, non-offspring maternal care has been documented in some otariid species. While the phenomenon in general is not novel among the colonially breeding seals, the exclusive care to a single pup by two lactating females for an extended time is a behavior scarcely documented in natural population. In an extension of this allonursing care, we document the first case of the kidnapping of a pup with subsequent shared nursing in Antarctic fur seal including data on the effect of this interaction on the pup’s growth. While all other lactating females nursed exclusively their own pups, the shared nursing was advantageous for the pup because he grew noticeably larger (in weight and axillary girth) than other of his cohort, particularly after 50 days. This advantage would have been influenced by the asynchrony of the foraging cycle of the biological and foster mother, which resulted in a higher attendance on shore than any other male pups. Although several explanations have been hypothesized for allolactation in mammals, our observations suggest a misguided parental care, associated with recognition errors by the foster mother whose pup was stillborn. 相似文献

The fish component in the diet of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands from mid January to April 1988. Fish otoliths occurred in 78.8% of faecal droppings. Most of the otoliths extracted from scats belonged to Myctophid fish (93.4%), mainly Electrona antarctica and Gymnoscopelus nicholsi. These two fish species thus constituted the bulk of the diet. A greater percentage of the otoliths from G. nicholsi (31.1%) in this study were considered suitable for measurement in comparison with 10.3% from scats at Heard Island in 1990 and 11.4% at Macquarie Island in 1988/89. This lesser degree of erosion would suggest that foraging areas of fur seals during this study were closer to land than during previous studies. During the period studied, the commercial fishery around the South Orkneys was not based on Myctophid fish so there was no direct competition for fish between the fur seals and fisheries. 相似文献

This study examined the diet of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, from an active breeding colony at Cape Shirreff (62°28S, 60°48W), Livingston Island, South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica. It analysed faecal samples from five consecutive years (1997–2001) and length distribution of krill taken by trawl nets in the vicinity of Livingston Island. Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was the most frequent prey item, followed by several myctophid species (Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Electrona antarctica and Electrona carlsbergi), squid and penguin remains. From 1998 to 2001, a modal progression in krill size was evident, suggesting that A. gazella was depending on a strong krill cohort, at least over the study period. Analysis of size distribution and size selectivity of krill preyed upon by fur seals suggests a preference for larger krill (>34 mm), despite the broader size range of preys items available. 相似文献
