The hypotheses that the plasticity or flexibility of cognitive activity substantially depends on the ability to replace the previous cognitive sets by new sets that are more appropriate to new conditions is substantiated. Working memory overload results in a decrease in set-shifting and, as a consequence, increased erroneous stimuli recognition. The plasticity of set-shifting is changed depending on the context of cognitive activity. On the basis of the data from the analysis of the coherence function and induced synchronization/desynchronization responses of potentials in the θ (4–7 Hz) and low-frequency α (8–10 Hz) bands, the roles of the tonic and phasic forms of activity of the cortico-hippocampal and fronto-thalamic functional systems of cerebral integration in changes of plasticity of cognitive functions are discussed.  相似文献

EEG coherence in theta and alpha bands during set-forming and set-shifting was studied in 5-6-year-old (n=18) and 10-11-year-old (n=25) children. Set was formed to visual stimuli (facial photos with emotionally negative expression). Younger children displayed smaller coherence values, especially in the right hemisphere, than older ones. We also revealed differences in theta and alpha band coherence in cases of a rigid and a plastic set. For example, EEG-coherence values were smaller when cognitive processes were relatively rigid (i.e., in a case of a slower set-shifting). A strong correlation between electrophysiological and behavioral data supports the hypothesis that cortico-hippocampal and fronto-thalamic brain integration systems participate in facial expression recognition and provide cognition flexibility.  相似文献

Influence of additional working memory load on emotional face recognition was studied in healthy adults. Visual set to emotional face expression was experimentally formed, and two types of additional task--visual-spatial or semantic--were embedded in the experiment. Additional task caused less plastic set, i.e., a slower set-shifting. This effect displayed itself in an increase of erroneous facial expression perceptions. The character of these erroneous perceptions (assimilative or contrast or visual illusions) depended on the type of the additional task. Pre-stimulus EEG coherence across experimental trials in theta (4-7), low alpha (8-10 Hz) and beta (14--20) bands was analysed. Data of low-alpha and beta-coherence supported the hypothesis that increased memory load caused less involvement of frontal lobes in selective attention mechanisms that are associated with set-forming. This results in a slower set-shifting. Increased memory load also led to a growth of theta-band coherence in the left hemisphere and its decrease in the right hemisphere. The account of theta-coherence decrease in the right hemisphere between prefrontal and temporal areas for a slower set-shifting is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine brain responses, in particular functional connectivity, to different visual stimuli depicting familiar biological motions. Ten subjects actively observed familiar biological motions embedded in point-light and video displays. Electroencephalograms were recorded from 64 electrodes. Activity was considered in three frequency bands (4-8 Hz, 8-10 Hz, and 10-13 Hz) using a non-linear measure of functional connectivity. In the 4-8 Hz and 8-10 Hz frequency bands, functional connectivity for the SMA was greater during the observation of biological motions presented in a point-light display compared to the observation of motions presented in a video display. The reverse was observed for the 4-8 Hz frequency band for the left temporal area. Explanations related to: (i) the task demands (i.e., attention and mental effort), (ii) the role(s) of theta and alpha oscillations in cognitive processes, and (iii) the function(s) of cortical areas are discussed. It has been suggested that attention was required to process human biological motions under unfamiliar viewing conditions such as point-light display.  相似文献

Changes in face expression recognition and EEG synchronization arising from additional load on working memory were studied in healthy adults. Two types of additional task--semantic and visuospatial--were used to load working memory in an experiment with a visual set, formed to facial stimuli. During perception of new facial stimuli, both these types of additional task caused an increase of erroneous face expression recognitions in the form of assimilative illusions. Alpha-band (8-10 Hz) EEG synchronization analysis revealed that additional memory load causes a decrease of frontal attention system input in set-forming and set-shifting. As for theta-band (4-7 Hz) synchronization, it changed ambiguously at additional memory load--in right fronto-temporal region coherence function decreased; other coherence connections, especially intra-hemispheric and in the left hemisphere, increased. At issue is the crucial role of fronto-thalamic and cortico-hippocampal systems in plasticity of visual sets formed to facial expressions.  相似文献

Oscillatory activity and its nonlinear dynamics are of fundamental importance for information processing in the central nervous system. Here we show that in aperiodic oscillations, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a member of the neurotrophin family, enhances the accuracy of action potentials in terms of spike reliability and temporal precision. Cultured hippocampal neurons displayed irregular oscillations of membrane potential in response to sinusoidal 20-Hz somatic current injection, yielding wobbly orbits in the phase space, i.e., a strange attractor. Brief application of BDNF suppressed this unpredictable dynamics and stabilized membrane potential fluctuations, leading to rhythmical firing. Even in complex oscillations induced by external stimuli of 40 Hz (gamma) on a 5-Hz (theta) carrier, BDNF-treated neurons generated more precisely timed spikes, i.e., phase-locked firing, coupled with theta-phase precession. These phenomena were sensitive to K252a, an inhibitor of tyrosine receptor kinases and appeared attributable to BDNF-evoked Na(+) current. The data are the first indication of pharmacological control of endogenous chaos. BDNF diminishes the ambiguity of spike time jitter and thereby might assure neural encoding, such as spike timing-dependent synaptic plasticity.  相似文献

Changes in the recognition of facial expression and spatial synchronization of the cortical electrical activity of the θ- and α-potentials caused by load on working memory were studied in healthy adults by introducing an additional semantic or visuospatial task into the context of experiment with a visual set. An increase in the number of erroneous recognitions of facial stimuli in the form of assimilative illusions was revealed in both types of the additional task. The analysis of the function of coherence of the low-frequency α-potentials indicates (8–10 Hz) a decrease in this situation in the number of connections in the frontal cortical divisions with other cortical zones, which is regarded as a lesser involvement of the frontal system of selective attention in set-forming and set-shifting for an emotionally negative facial expression. Spatial synchronization of the θ-activity (4–7 Hz) with an increase in the load on working memory changes ambiguously in different cortical structures: it decreases in the system of the fronto-temporal connections of the right hemisphere; in the other cortical areas, especially in the left hemisphere, and in the system of interhemispheric connections it substantially increases. The facts confirming the hypothesis that the fronto-thalamic and cortico-hippocampal systems are the two key formations involved in changes in the plasticity of cognitive sets for facial expression are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of heat-induced pain on absolute thresholds, sensation magnitudes and amplitude-difference thresholds were measured at 10 and 100 Hz. Consistent with previous results, heat-induced pain elevated the absolute thresholds by approximately 8.0 dB and lessened the magnitudes of tactile sensations during pain as compared to the non-painful condition. In contrast to these effects, the discriminability of change in the intensity of the vibrotactile stimuli was unaffected by the presence of pain indicating that the effect of pain on tactile sensations is more likely due to sensory rather than cognitive processes (i.e., attention) and that the mechanisms underlying tactile sensitivity as compared to discriminability are different.  相似文献

The default mode network (DMN) is a set of brain regions that consistently shows higher activity at rest compared to tasks requiring sustained focused attention toward externally presented stimuli. The cognitive processes that the DMN possibly underlies remain a matter of debate. It has alternately been proposed that DMN activity reflects unfocused attention toward external stimuli or the occurrence of internally generated thoughts. The present study aimed at clarifying this issue by investigating the neural correlates of the various kinds of conscious experiences that can occur during task performance. Four classes of conscious experiences (i.e., being fully focused on the task, distractions by irrelevant sensations/perceptions, interfering thoughts related to the appraisal of the task, and mind-wandering) that varied along two dimensions ("task-relatedness" and "stimulus-dependency") were sampled using thought-probes while the participants performed a go/no-go task. Analyses performed on the intervals preceding each probe according to the reported subjective experience revealed that both dimensions are relevant to explain activity in several regions of the DMN, namely the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus, and posterior inferior parietal lobe. Notably, an additive effect of the two dimensions was demonstrated for midline DMN regions. On the other hand, lateral temporal regions (also part of the DMN) were specifically related to stimulus-independent reports. These results suggest that midline DMN regions underlie cognitive processes that are active during both internal thoughts and external unfocused attention. They also strengthen the view that the DMN can be fractionated into different subcomponents and reveal the necessity to consider both the stimulus-dependent and the task-related dimensions of conscious experiences when studying the possible functional roles of the DMN.  相似文献

Changes in the alpha-rhythm synchronization were revealed at different stages of cognitive visual set in 5- to 7-year-old children. We found a clear-cut correlation of these changes with set plasticity. In children with a plastic set, the EEG synchronization between the frontal and other brain regions substantially increased in the period of set-shifting (the actualization stage). At the set extinction stage, after set-shifting has already taken place, the EEG-synchronization becomes minimal. On the contrary, in children who formed a rigid set, EEG coherence considerably increases at the set extinction stage. This finding suggests that the rigid set still affects the cognitive activity even after (judging from oral reports) the set shift has been completed. The age-related differences in cognitive set formation clearly correlate with the time course of the EEG synchronization between the frontal and other brain regions. We think that the ability to form a plastic visual set depends on the frontal cortex maturation, which occurs at the age of 6-7 years, and its age-related effect on the brain cognitive functions.  相似文献

Recent studies employing speech stimuli to investigate ‘cocktail-party’ listening have focused on entrainment of cortical activity to modulations at syllabic (5 Hz) and phonemic (20 Hz) rates. The data suggest that cortical modulation filters (CMFs) are dependent on the sound-frequency channel in which modulations are conveyed, potentially underpinning a strategy for separating speech from background noise. Here, we characterize modulation filters in human listeners using a novel behavioral method. Within an ‘inverted’ adaptive forced-choice increment detection task, listening level was varied whilst contrast was held constant for ramped increments with effective modulation rates between 0.5 and 33 Hz. Our data suggest that modulation filters are tonotopically organized (i.e., vary along the primary, frequency-organized, dimension). This suggests that the human auditory system is optimized to track rapid (phonemic) modulations at high sound-frequencies and slow (prosodic/syllabic) modulations at low frequencies.  相似文献

The attentional set-shifting deficit that has been observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) has long been considered neuropsychological evidence of the involvement of meso-prefrontal and prefrontal-striatal circuits in cognitive flexibility. However, recent studies have suggested that non-dopaminergic, posterior cortical pathologies may also contribute to this deficit. Although several neuroimaging studies have addressed this issue, the results of these studies were confounded by the use of tasks that required other cognitive processes in addition to set-shifting, such as rule learning and working memory. In this study, we attempted to identify the neural correlates of the attentional set-shifting deficit in PD using a compound letter task and 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography during rest. Shift cost, which is a measure of attentional set-shifting ability, was significantly correlated with hypometabolism in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, including the putative human frontal eye field. Our results provide direct evidence that dysfunction in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex makes a primary contribution to the attentional set-shifting deficit that has been observed in PD patients.  相似文献

The capacity to integrate multiple sources of information is a prerequisite for complex cognitive ability, such as finding a target uniquely identifiable by the conjunction of two or more features. Recent studies identified greater frontal-parietal synchrony during conjunctive than non-conjunctive (feature) search. Whether this difference also reflects greater information integration, rather than just differences in cognitive strategy (e.g., top-down versus bottom-up control of attention), or task difficulty is uncertain. Here, we examine the first possibility by parametrically varying the number of integrated sources from one to three and measuring phase-locking values (PLV) of frontal-parietal EEG electrode signals, as indicators of synchrony. Linear regressions, under hierarchical false-discovery rate control, indicated significant positive slopes for number of sources on PLV in the 30-38 Hz, 175-250 ms post-stimulus frequency-time band for pairs in the sagittal plane (i.e., F3-P3, Fz-Pz, F4-P4), after equating conditions for behavioural performance (to exclude effects due to task difficulty). No such effects were observed for pairs in the transverse plane (i.e., F3-F4, C3-C4, P3-P4). These results provide support for the idea that anterior-posterior phase-locking in the lower gamma-band mediates integration of visual information. They also provide a potential window into cognitive development, seen as developing the capacity to integrate more sources of information.  相似文献

We studied fatigue of rat diaphragm in response to repetitive brief and prolonged electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerve, at 0.2, 1-100 Hz. Low and high frequency of stimulation produced twitch and tetanic contractions in the rat diaphragm. A mean maximum twitch tension of 1.4 +/- 0.1 g was produced at 1 Hz, and a mean maximum tetanic tension of 5.6 +/- 0.3 g was obtained at 100 Hz (means +/- S.E., n = 8). Twitch and tetanic fatigue was produced at all frequencies of stimulations, but with different time scale, or duration, and with different number of stimuli delivered to the muscle. At low rates of stimulation, e.g. 10 Hz, fewer stimuli were needed to fatigue the muscle (3000 in 5 min), whereas at high rates of stimulation, e.g. 50 Hz, more stimuli were needed to fatigue the muscle (6600 in 2.2 min). The amplitude of the tetanic tensions elicited at 10 and 50 Hz, at the end of 5 or 2 min fatiguing stimulation, was 39 +/- 2.7% and 80 +/- 3.1% of their respective control tensions (2.8 +/- 0 2 g and 5.3 +/- 0.5 g, n = 8, P 0.001). It was concluded that fatigue in the rat diaphragm depended on the frequency and duration of stimulation as well as on the number of stimuli delivered to the muscle. Various mechanisms of muscle fatigue are described in the discussion to explain the observations made in the present investigation.  相似文献

Our ability to process visual information is fundamentally limited. This leads to competition between sensory information that is relevant for top-down goals and sensory information that is perceptually salient, but task-irrelevant. The aim of the present study was to identify, from EEG recordings, pre-stimulus and pre-saccadic neural activity that could predict whether top-down or bottom-up processes would win the competition for attention on a trial-by-trial basis. We employed a visual search paradigm in which a lateralized low contrast target appeared alone, or with a low (i.e., non-salient) or high contrast (i.e., salient) distractor. Trials with a salient distractor were of primary interest due to the strong competition between top-down knowledge and bottom-up attentional capture. Our results demonstrated that 1) in the 1-sec pre-stimulus interval, frontal alpha (8-12 Hz) activity was higher on trials where the salient distractor captured attention and the first saccade (bottom-up win); and 2) there was a transient pre-saccadic increase in posterior-parietal alpha (7-8 Hz) activity on trials where the first saccade went to the target (top-down win). We propose that the high frontal alpha reflects a disengagement of attentional control whereas the transient posterior alpha time-locked to the saccade indicates sensory inhibition of the salient distractor and suppression of bottom-up oculomotor capture.  相似文献

Synaptic response to single (2 Hz) and regular (30–50 Hz) stimuli applied to the pontine inhibitory site were recorded in decerebrate cats. A change to regular stimulation was usually accompanied by a rise in the firing index of synaptic discharges and raised amplitude of inhibitory and (to a lesser extent) excitatory postsynaptic potentials. Suppression of background spike activity was observed in some neurons. It was deduced that frequency potentiation makes a considerable contribution to the functional effect of stimulating the inhibitory site, i.e., terminating evoked locomotion.Institute for Information Transmission Studies, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Power spectra of cortical potentials of baseline activity during interstimuli intervals (4 s; Fourier transform in the frequency band of 1-60 Hz) and short-term (0.8 s) induced responses to facial stimuli (wavelet transform in the 15-60 Hz band) were assessed in the study of the visual cognitive set to facial expression. Significant differences between groups of subjects with different set rigidity were observed only at the set-testing stage. Estimation of the short-term (0.8 s) induced responses of the wavelet spectra in the group with plastic set revealed an increase in the power (in comparison with the power of background activity) of the gamma2 band (41-60 Hz) in the left hemisphere of the temporal, central and occipital areas, whereas in the group with rigid set these power spectra decreased. At the same time the power in the gamma1 band (21-40 Hz) was significantly lower (at the same level with the rigid form), indicating a discrete nature and functional selectivity in the gamma frequency band.  相似文献

This study quantified the effect of interrupting the descending input to the sympathetic preganglionic neurons on the dynamic behavior of arterial blood pressure (BP) in the unanesthetized rat. BP was recorded for approximately 4-h intervals in six rats in the neurally intact state and in the same animals after complete spinal cord transection (SCT) between T(4) and T(5). In the intact state, power within the frequency range of 0.35-0.45 Hz was 1.53 +/- 0.38 mmHg(2)/Hz (mean +/- SD by fast Fourier transform). One week after SCT, power within this range decreased significantly (P < 0.05) to 0.43 +/- 0.62 mmHg(2)/Hz. To test for self-similarity before and after SCT, we analyzed data using a wavelet (i.e., functionally, a digital bandpass filter) tuned to be maximally sensitive to fluctuations with periods of approximately 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 s. In the control state, all fluctuations with periods of >/=4 s conformed to a "self-similar" (i.e., fractal) distribution. In marked contrast, the oscillations with a period of approximately 2 s (i.e., approximately 0.4 Hz) were significantly set apart from those at lower frequencies. One day and seven days after the complete SCT, however, the BP fluctuations at approximately 0.4 Hz now also conformed to the same self-similar behavior characteristic of the lower frequencies. We conclude that 1) an intact sympathetic nervous system endows that portion of the power spectrum centered around approximately 0.4 Hz with properties (e.g., a periodicity) that differ significantly from the self-similar behavior that characterizes the lower frequencies and 2) even within the relatively high frequency range at 0.4 Hz self-similarity is the "default" condition after sympathetic influences have been eliminated.  相似文献

Emotion (i.e., spontaneous motivation and subsequent implementation of a behavior) and cognition (i.e., problem solving by information processing) are essential to how we, as humans, respond to changes in our environment. Recent studies in cognitive science suggest that emotion and cognition are subserved by different, although heavily integrated, neural systems. Understanding the time-varying relationship of emotion and cognition is a challenging goal with important implications for neuroscience. We formulate here the dynamical model of emotion-cognition interaction that is based on the following principles: (1) the temporal evolution of cognitive and emotion modes are captured by the incoming stimuli and competition within and among themselves (competition principle); (2) metastable states exist in the unified emotion-cognition phase space; and (3) the brain processes information with robust and reproducible transients through the sequence of metastable states. Such a model can take advantage of the often ignored temporal structure of the emotion-cognition interaction to provide a robust and generalizable method for understanding the relationship between brain activation and complex human behavior. The mathematical image of the robust and reproducible transient dynamics is a Stable Heteroclinic Sequence (SHS), and the Stable Heteroclinic Channels (SHCs). These have been hypothesized to be possible mechanisms that lead to the sequential transient behavior observed in networks. We investigate the modularity of SHCs, i.e., given a SHS and a SHC that is supported in one part of a network, we study conditions under which the SHC pertaining to the cognition will continue to function in the presence of interfering activity with other parts of the network, i.e., emotion.  相似文献
