Information about the large-scale zooplankton distribution in the Nansen Basin, that part of the Arctic Ocean most directly influenced by the inflow of Atlantic Water, is still scarce. During the Polarstern expedition ARK IV/3 in July/August 1987 zooplankton from the upper 500 m was sampled along two transects across the western Nansen Basin. Spatial variations in faunal composition, abundance, and biomass are described. Special emphasis is given to the distribution patterns and possible drifting routes of species advected into the Arctic Ocean through Fram Strait. Forty-five species and eight taxa not determined to species level were identified. Copepods clearly dominate in terms of species number, abundance, and biomass. Ostracods and chaetognaths comprise the most important groups of the non-copepod zooplankton. Maximum species numbers were recorded over the abyssal plain around 83°N. Total abundance and biomass decreased by more than 80% towards the northern part of the basin. Cluster analysis revealed two major faunal assemblages, broadly overlapping over the central Nansen Basin, and three principal types of spatial distribution. The well-defined zonation observed in the large-scale zooplankton distribution closely resembles the major hydrographic and topographic features. The opposite movement of the Polar Surface Water and the Atlantic Water in the southern Nansen Basin might cause pronounced deviations between the drifting routes of species with different water mass preferences advected through Fram Strait.  相似文献

Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) occur throughout the circumpolar north; however, their distributions at localized scales are not well understood. The seasonal habitat associations and diet preferences across life-history stages of this keystone species are also poorly known, thereby impeding effective regulatory efforts in support of conservation objectives. The distribution of Arctic Cod in the Canadian Beaufort Sea was assessed using bottom trawling in shelf and slope habitats between 20 and 1000 m depths. Highest catch biomasses occurred at 350 and 500 m depth slope stations, coinciding with >0 °C temperatures in the Pacific–Atlantic thermohalocline and Atlantic water mass. Calanus glacialis, Calanus hyperboreus, Themisto libellula, and Themisto abyssorum were identified as key prey species in the diet of Arctic Cod, comprising approximately 86 % of total biomass in guts. Hierarchical cluster analysis with a SIMPROF test identified five statistically significant (p < 0.05) diet groups among gut samples. Arctic Cod shifted from a primarily Calanus diet at shelf stations (<200 m depth) to a Themisto diet in slope habitats (>200 m depth) coinciding with an associated increase in fish standard length with depth. Smaller Arctic Cod fed primarily on Calanus copepods and larger Arctic Cod fed primarily on the larger Themisto species. The habitat and diet associations presented here will inform knowledge of structural and functional relationships in Arctic marine ecosystems, aid in mitigation and conservation efforts, and will enhance our ability to predict the effects of climate change on the local spatial and depth associations of this pivotal marine fish.  相似文献

The surface distribution of netphytoplankton (>20 m) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean was investigated along two transects during early and late austral summer 1990/91. Sampling was under-taken at intervals of 60 of latitude between 34° and 70°S for the analysis of nutrients and for the identification and enumeration of netphytoplankton. Peaks in total diatom abundances were recorded at the Antarctic Polar Front (APF), in the vicinity of the South Sand wich Islands, in the marginal ice zone and in the neritic waters of the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. Cluster analysis indicates the existence of two major zones between Southern Africa and Antarctica. Diatom abundance increased south of the Antarctic Polar From along both transects, which can be partially explained by gradients of silicate concentration. Small chain-forming species (e.g. Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Nitzschia lineata) dominated the diatom assemblages in early summer, while larger species, such as Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina and Corethron criophilum, dominated late summer diatom assemblages. The predominance of typically ice-associated forms in early summer suggests that the release of epontic cells during ice melt provides the initial inoculum for the netphytoplankton biomass. These small diatoms are subsequently replaced by larger species.  相似文献

The Svalbard Islands are influenced by warm Atlantic water in the south and west, and cold Arctic water in the east. Ice cover, and hence the location of the highly productive marginal ice zone, varies both intra and interannually. Part of the primary production accumulates on the bottom and is utilized by the benthos. In this study, the annual growth of the cockle Clinocardium ciliatum (Fabricius, 1780) from three sites in Svalbard waters is reported. Moffen, the site in the north (80° 01 N, 13° 48 E) is located in the northernmost areas influenced by Atlantic water. The Storfjorden site (77° 10 N, 20° 09 E) is situated in cold Arctic water masses, and the Bear Island site (74° 50 N, 18° 54 E) is in the Polar front area where Atlantic and Arctic water masses meet. Annual growth of cockles was analysed retrospectively by measuring external growth increments, which gave annual growth records from the 1970s to 1996. Shell height for age for different year classes was highest at the Storfjorden site, and lowest at Bear Island. Periods of high growth occurred at Storfjorden and Bear Island during the 1980s while the beginning of 1990s was characterized by low growth. At Moffen, growth was more variable between single years. Several factors are influencing the growth of C. ciliatum in the Svalbard area and growth cannot be coupled to only one environmental factor like ice cover.  相似文献

To study the influence of gap structure and bamboo species on the regrowth of montane Atlantic forest, colonization by plants was characterized in 30 treefall gaps (30.3–500.5 m2). The study was conducted at Santa Virgínia (45°30 W, 23°17 S), a 4970-ha reserve of Atlantic montane forest in southeastern Brazil. Area covered by bamboos ranged from 0% to 100% of gap area. Average height of surrounding canopies ranged from 12 to 30 m. As gap are covered by bamboo and average height of surrounding canopies increased, both density and richness of pioneer woody species decreased. Density and richness of shade-tolerant species were negatively influenced by gap area. Low-light-demanding species of Miconia, Leandra and Rapanea accounted for the majority of both pioneer species and individuals sampled, whereas high-light demanding pioneers of Cecropia, Alchornea and Tibouchina were poorly represented. We suggest that in the Atlantic montane forest bamboo species compete for gaps, excluding other light-demanding pioneers. This results in an overall reduction of pioneer species richness in the Atlantic forest.  相似文献

New Zealand Demersal Fish Assemblages   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Demersal fish assemblages in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone were identified using presence–absence data from 19215 bottom trawl tows made over a 37-year period. The dataset spanned latitudes 34–54°S and depths of 4–1500m. A total of 123 taxa occurred in more than 1% of the tows (121 fish and 2 squid). Multivariate ordination and classification (correspondence analysis and Ward's cluster analysis) identified four primary species assemblages that were associated with the inner continental shelf, mid–outer continental shelf and shelf edge, upper continental slope and mid continental slope. The most frequently occurring species (> 40% of tows) in each assemblage were (in descending order): inshore – Chelidonichthys kumu, Pagrus auratus and Zeus faber; shelf – Nototodarus spp., Squalus acanthias and Thyrsites atun; upper slope – Macruronus novaezelandiae, Lepidorhynchus denticulatus, Genypterus blacodes and Hydrolagus sp.; mid slope – Hoplostethus atlanticus, Etmopterus baxteri, Halargyreus johnsonii, Coryphaenoides subserrulatus, Deania calcea, Coryphaenoides serrulatus, Pseudocyttus maculatus, Mora moro, Diastobranchus capensis and Centroscymnus crepidater. Further species associations were also identified within each primary assemblage. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that most of the explainable variation in species composition was associated with depth and latitude; longitude and season explained little extra variance. The usefulness of our results is limited by the use of presence–absence rather than abundance data, and by the uneven spatial distribution of trawl tows. However, the present study provides a large-scale framework within which to interpret the results of studies using abundance data over smaller spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

Both Atlantic eel species (Anguilla anguilla andA. rostrata) were collected in the Sargasso Sea during the 1979 cruise of the F. R. V. Anton Dohrn and R. V. Friedrich Heincke. A total of 3,097 0-group larvae were caught during 80 hauls using the Isaacs Kidd Midwater Trawl (55 hauls) and the 9-fold opening and closing net MOCNESS (25 hauls). 11 hauls of the MOCNESS indicated that the larvae showed a preference for the 150–175 m water depth during daytime and for the 50–75 m depth during night. The northern distribution limit seems to coincide with the 18°C-water at the sea surface. The Antilla current characterised by higher temperatures and salinities could have been the southern distribution limit. The north-easternmost occurrence ofA. anguilla was noted at 50°W; the eastern distribution limit of this species could be farther east. The westernmost station at 69°W was positive for both species.A. anguilla, therefore, is very likely to occur beyond this area. The easternmost occurrence ofA. rostrata was noted at 52°W though sporadic and with increasing abundance towards the west. At the western end of the network of stations the highest concentration of larvae from both species was recorded. Oceanographic investigations reveal that the distribution of the smaller larvae (size-groups <7 mm and <10 mm) almost coincides with the assumed spawning area.  相似文献

The Arctogadus glacialis is endemic to the Arctic Ocean and its apparently disjunct circumpolar distribution range from the Siberian coast through the Chukchi Sea and the Canadian Arctic to the shelf off NE Greenland. Records of A. glacialis are scarce in the European Arctic and here we present all available and reliable records of the species in the area. Altogether, 296 specimens of A. glacialis are reported from 53 positions in the European Arctic during the period 1976–2008. The specimens were registered off Iceland and the Jan Mayen Island, northwest and northeast of Svalbard, northeast in the Barents Sea, and south and east off Franz Josef Land. The additional records show that A. glacialis display a circumpolar and more continuous distribution than described before. In the European Arctic, A. glacialis has been caught at 155–741 m depth with the highest abundance at 300–400 m. We therefore suggest that A. glacialis is more associated to the continental shelves surrounding the Arctic Ocean than previously thought. The length–weight relation of A. glacialis is similar across the European Arctic.  相似文献

During the austral summer of 1989/1990, surface samples were obtained of size-fractionated biomass, and the productivity of phytoplankton, its cell abundance, the composition of the dominant species, the concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC) and the related environmental surface parameters were measured in a large-scale survey primarily of the Atlantic and Indian Sectors. The results showed that the southern atlantic sector is the most fertile; chlorophylla (Chla) concentration averaged over 2 μg l−1, average cell abundance was about 41.0 × 103 cell l−1, and average POC concentration was also the highest (>100 μg l−1), but was lower in the Drake Passage and the southern Indian sector. The results for size-fractionated Chla showed that netplankton (>20 μm) in the South Atlantic Ocean, having abundant nutrients, accounted for the highest proportion (average 65%) of biomass. In the infertile South Indian Ocean, picoplankton (<2 μm) accounted for the highest proportion, averaging 47%. The results for size-fractionated productivity showed that the contribution of picoplankton to total productivity was the largest in the South Atlantic Ocean and Drake Passage, those of nanoplankton (2–20 μm) and netplankton being about equal. The relatively high photosynthesis assimilation number of picoplankton demonstrates their importance in the marine ecosystems of Antarctic water. In comparison with the Antarctic water, the subantarctic and subtropical waters are infertile.  相似文献

For many taxa, diversity, often measured as species richness, decreases with latitude. In this report patterns of diversity (species richness, species diversity, and evenness) in groundfish assemblages were investigated in relation to depth (200–1200 m) and latitude (33–47°N) on the continental slope of the U.S. Pacific coast. The data originated from the 1999–2002 upper continental slope groundfish surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service. When the data were pooled across depths, species density and evenness were found to decline with latitude. All three diversity measures declined with depth, with the lowest overall diversity in the 600- to 900-m depth range where longspine thornyhead Sebastolobus altivelis constituted close to 70% of the catch. When latitudinal gradients were examined within four depth zones (200–300 m, 400–500 m, 600–900 m, and 1000–1200 m) more complex patterns emerged. At depth species richness and evenness were inversely correlated with latitude as longspine thornyhead dominated catches to the north. However, in shallower areas of the slope, species richness and evenness were positively correlated with latitude. Latitudinal patterns of diversity in the deeper zones and when pooled across depths were positively correlated with temperature and broadly consistent with the Ambient Energy hypothesis discussed by Willig et al. [Annu Rev Ecol System 34:273–309 (2003)].  相似文献

Mesozooplankton collected during five summer expeditions to the Arctic Ocean between 1987 and 1991 was analysed for regional patterns in biomass and species distribution, distinguishing between an epipelagic (0–100 m) and a deeper (0–500 m) layer. A total of 58 stations was sampled mainly in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov Basins of the central Arctic Ocean and in areas of the Greenland Sea, West Spitsbergen Current and Barents Sea. Results from the different expeditions were combined to create a transect extending from the Fram Strait across the Eurasian Basin into the Makarov Basin. Mesozooplankton dry mass in the upper 500 m decreased from 8.4 g m−2 in the West Spitsbergen Current to less than 2 g m−2 in the high-Arctic deep-sea basins. In the central Arctic Ocean, biomass was concentrated in the upper 100 m and was dominated by the large copepods Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis. In contrast, the mesozooplankton in the West Spitsbergen Current was more evenly distributed throughout the upper 500 m, with C. finmarchicus as the prevailing species. The distribution of abundant mesopelagic species reflected the hydrographic regime: the calanoid copepod Gaetanus tenuispinus and the hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum were most abundant in the Atlantic inflow, while Scaphocalanus magnus was a typical component of the high-Arctic fauna. The relatively high mesozooplankton biomass and the occurrence of boreal-Atlantic species in the central Arctic Ocean are indicators for the import of organic material from allochthonous sources, especially from the northern North Atlantic. Hence, in spite of its enclosure by land masses, the Arctic Ocean is characterized by an exchange of water masses and organisms with the North Atlantic, and advection processes strongly influence the distribution of plankton species in this high-latitude ecosystem. Of the 20 pandalid shrimps species and subspecies reported for the Eastern Central Atlantic (26–36° N), 16 were found in one or more Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands) (14–40° N), and 11 of them were recorded to date in the Canary Island waters (27° 30–29° 30 N): Bitias stocki Fransen, 1990; Heterocarpus ensifer ensifer A. Milne-Edwards, 1881; Heterocarpus grimaldii A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1900; Heterocarpus laevigatus Bate, 1888; Plesionika edwardsii (Brandt, 1851); Plesionika ensis (A. Milne-Edwards, 1881); Plesionika holthuisi Crosnier & Forest, 1968; Plesionika martia martia (A. Milne-Edwards, 1883); Plesionika narval (J.C. Fabricius, 1787); Plesionika williamsi Forest, 1964; and Stylopandalus richardi Coutière, 1905. In the present work, Plesionika antigai Zariquiey Álvarez, 1955 is recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands. As a result of many fishing surveys around the Canary Islands at 27–1550 m depth between 1985 and 1998, information on bathymetric distribution, habitat, size and biology of the 12 Canarian pandalid species is given. The geomorphologic, geographic and oceanographic characteristics of the Canary Islands marine ecosystems could explain the great diversity in the biogeographic patterns of the pandalid species inhabiting this area. The distribution patterns found were: Macaronesian (1 spec.), Atlanto-Mediterranean (1 spec.), Eastern Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm (2 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), pantropical (5 spec.), and cosmopolitan (1 spec.).  相似文献

Summary The localization of unspecific esterase, alkaline phosphatase, adenosine triphosphatase, 5-nucleotidase, and -D-glucuronidase in the testes of cat and dog was demonstrated by histochemical means. We observed a strong esterase activity in the Sertoli cells of the cat and high amounts of alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase in the membrana propria of all seminiferous tubules. In both species the principal site of -D-glucuronidase was in the Leydig cells. Our findings obtained being discussed.

Adjustments in the geometry of the separation zone of an inclined parallel plate sedimenter, previously developed, permitted an extensive increase in the volumetric clarification rate of broth containing yeast (S. cerevisiae). The prototype, having an internal capacity of 1340 ml, was fed with fermentation broth containing 18.8% v/v cells, while 16.4 ml/min of clarified broth containing 0.3% v/v cells was removed in the overflow. The underflow, containing 23.8% v/v cells, was recycled to the fermenter at a rate of 60.6 ml/min. These results demonstrated the viability of using exclusively gravitational sedimentation for cellular recycling in continuous alcoholic fermentation. Without a doubt, this system represents the simplest technological alternative among those thus far proposed for continuous alcoholic fermentation. The low cost of installation, maintenance and operation permitted projection of its application for any scale of production.List of Symbols A Cross sectional area of the sedimentation zone - b Distance between two parallel plates, height of the triangle or diameter of the circle (for rectangular, triangular or circular cross sections of the sedimentation zone, respectively) - b Mean distance travelled by the cells during sedimentation within the sedimentation zone with each cross sectional geometry - B f Biomass content of the fermentation broth - B o Biomass content of the overflow - B u Biomass content of the underflow - Eff. Summary Vertical distributions of various species and stages of zooplankton at different times of the day were determined by stratified sampling with the BIONESS in northeastern Baffin Bay during early August. The water column was divided into an upper subarctic zone (>0° C, salinity < 32), a lower subarctic zone (< 0° C, salinity 32 to 34) and a deep zone of Atlantic water (>0° C, salinity 34). The upper subarctic zone was dominated by two species of pteropod molluscs; the lower subarctic water was dominated by the copepods, Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis and C. hyperboreus whose copepodite stages showed depth distributions that were different from one another, with the copepodite stage 5 and adult females generally shallower than the younger stages. All stages of all Calanus species were in the zone of primary production (10 to 50 m) while the copepods Pseudocalanus, Metridia and Oithona were generally found below this zone. Only C. finmarchicus and C. glacialis showed evidence of diurnal migration, migrating to the surface waters when the sun was at its lowest position on the horizon (i.e. at 0100 h).  相似文献

Summary The genus Themisto is represented in Atlantic Ocean waters by four different species: T. compressa, T. abyssorum, and T. libellula in the northern hemisphere and T. gaudichaudii in the southern hemisphere. Examination of morphological and electrophoretic characters has revealed that T. gaudichaudii, which was previously thought to have a bipolar distribution, in fact consist of separate species in Arctic and Antarctic waters, respectively. The Antarctic species remains as T. gauchichaudii Guérin 1828 and the oldest available name for the Arctic species is T. compressa Goes 1865. The results of the study also indicate that morphological variation within T. gaudichaudii (e.g. the compressa and bispinosa forms) is more likely to be the result of environmental influences rather than genetic differences. Electrophoretic analyses of genetic variation indicate that T. gaudichaudii from waters adjacent to both South Georgia Island and the South Shetland Islands belong to the same interbreeding population. Similar observations of homogeneity in other Antarctic pelagic animals suggest that the Antarctic circumpolar current systems promote effective genetic exchange and reduce the possibility of formation of distinct local breeding populations.  相似文献

The diversity of culturable bacteria associated with sea ice from four permanently cold fjords of Spitzbergen, Arctic Ocean, was investigated. A total of 116 psychrophilic and psychrotolerant strains were isolated under aerobic conditions at 4°C. The isolates were grouped using amplified rDNA restriction analysis fingerprinting and identified by partial sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. The bacterial isolates fell in five phylogenetic groups: subclasses and of Proteobacteria, the BacillusClostridium group, the order Actinomycetales, and the Cytophaga–Flexibacter–Bacteroides (CFB) phylum. Over 70% of the isolates were affiliated with the Proteobacteria subclass. Based on phylogenetic analysis (<98% sequence similarity), over 40% of Arctic isolates represent potentially novel species or genera. Most of the isolates were psychrotolerant and grew optimally between 20 and 25°C. Only a few strains were psychrophilic, with an optimal growth at 10–15°C. The majority of the bacterial strains were able to secrete a broad range of cold-active hydrolytic enzymes into the medium at a cultivation temperature of 4°C. The isolates that are able to degrade proteins (skim milk, casein), lipids (olive oil), and polysaccharides (starch, pectin) account for, respectively, 56, 31, and 21% of sea-ice and seawater strains. The temperature dependences for enzyme production during growth and enzymatic activity were determined for two selected enzymes, -amylase and -galactosidase. Interestingly, high levels of enzyme productions were measured at growth temperatures between 4 and 10°C, and almost no production was detected at higher temperatures (20–30°C). Catalytic activity was detected even below the freezing point of water (at –5°C), demonstrating the unique properties of these enzymes.  相似文献

Summary Basal oxygen consumption, ventilatory frequency, and heart rate were recorded at four different times during the unusually protracted 15–16-month spawning run of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey Geotria australis. At 15°C, the mean basal oxygen consumption of G. australis caught immediately after they had left the sea and embarked on the spawning run (45 l · g-1 · h-1) was less than in young adults about to commence their marine feeding phase (64 l · g-1 · h-1), but greater than in large ammocoetes (26.5 l · g-1 · h-1). Basal oxygen consumption fell progressively during the spawning-run of to 33 l · g-1 · h-1 after 5 months and 25 l · g-1 · h-1 after 10 months, before rising to 35 l · g-1 · h-1 after 15 months when the animals were approaching sexual maturity. The downwards trend in basal oxygen consumption contrasts with that recorded during the spawning run of Lampetra fluviatilis. Furthermore, these values for spawning-run of G. australis are far lower than those measured at any time during the upstream migration of L. fluviatilis or during the parasitic phase of landlocked Petromyzon marinus. A low and declining metabolic rate during much of the spawning run of G. australis would facilitate the conservation of energy reserves during this very long non-feeding period. Trends shown by ventilatory frequency and heart rate essentially parallel those of basal oxygen consumption. The Q10s for basal oxygen consumption, ventilatory frequency and heart rate over the temperature range 5–25°C were 1.6, 1.6, and 1.7, respectively. The trends shown by basal oxygen consumption during metamorphosis and the upstream migration did not parallel those exhibited by circulating thyroid hormones.  相似文献

An account of the chaetognath and ostracod species obtained from zooplankton samples collected along a transect in the Western Indian Ocean between 9° N–20° S and 57° 18–68° 43E in January–February 1981 is given. Species richness was maximum north of 10° S. The latitudinal variation of thirteen species of chaetognaths indicated that many of the typical Indo-Pacific species are restricted to the tropical zone with limited penetration into the subtropical region. All the sixteen species of planktonic ostracods were cosmopolitan. Based on the available information on the distribution of chaetognaths and ostracods, the species assemblages in the Indian Ocean are discussed.  相似文献
