The new ichnogenus Parataenidium is erected for backfilled tubular trace fossils that can appear superficially similar to Taenidium, but are divided horizontally into two distinct levels. Two ichnospecies are recognised: Parataenidium mullaghmorensis isp. nov. and Parataenidium moniliformis (Tate 1859). The latter ichnospecies is transferred from Eione Tate 1859, which is a junior homonym of Eione Rafinesque 1814, and therefore unavailable for Tate's ichnotaxon. The ichnogenus is an important component of late Paleozoic shallow‐water siliciclastic sediments, and can be considered as a “guide”; indicator for the Carboniferous.  相似文献

Abstract

Peculiar meniscate burrows with three sediment cords occur in early to middle Miocene tidal-flat deposits of southwestern Japan. Two of the cords are situated at the bottom and the other is at its center. Detailed observations of the burrow structures and comparative neoichnological studies of modern spatangoid burrows in a tidal flat revealed that the former two were true drainage tubes and the latter was fecal in origin. The trace fossil was thus assigned to the ichnogenus Scolicia. Based on these findings, a new ichnospecies Scolicia shirahamensis isp. nov. has been described here. The central sediment cord is seemingly identical to the drainage tube of the ichnogenus Bichordites, another ichnogenus that has been commonly ascribed to a fossil spatangoid burrow, similar to Scolicia. Careless ichnogeneric identification of a spatangoid burrow, based only on the central sediment cord, therefore, may produce an incorrect identification.  相似文献

We describe intergradations between the arthropod repichnial trace fossils Diplichnites gouldi (Gevers et al., 1971), Dendroidichnites Demathieu et al., 1992, and Monomorphichnus Crimes, 1970 with two distinct cubichnial traces, Gluckstadtella cooperi Savage, 1971 and Huilmuichnus santracruzensis new ichnogenus and ichnospecies. These compound ichnofossils are part of high ichnodiversity arthropod-dominated trace fossil associations from the Late Carboniferous Agua Escondida Formation of the San Rafael Basin (Argentina). The complex ichnotaxonomy of Diplichnites and the ichnospecies D. gouldi are discussed and some possible working solutions are proposed. The most likely producer of the compound trace fossils are the Pygocephalomorpha, a group of Late Paleozoic crustaceans that are recorded in nearby basins from Uruguay and Brazil. The compound trace fossils are used to infer a number of complex behaviors of pygocephalomorphs in a subaqueous setting, including caridoid (tail flip) or more primitive escape reactions, landing followed by resting and transient resting during normal walking. In addition, different gaits can be inferred from well-preserved D. gouldi, which can be correlated with contrasting trackway morphology.  相似文献

We report the oldest fossil evidence of osteophagia by terrestrial invertebrates on both the Asian and African continents. Bones attributable to the Middle Jurassic dinosaur Chuanjiesaurus (Dinosauria: Sauropoda) were found with post-mortem insect modification in the Chuanjie Formation, Yunnan Province, China. The morphology of the borings closely matches the ichnogenus Cubiculum. Based on the lack of bioglyphs observed in Cubiculum ornatus, a new ichnospecies is proposed here. The new trace fossil, Cubiculum inornatus isp. nov., is interpreted to have been constructed for pupation by an unknown taxon of insect. Additionally, we report even older borings from Early Jurassic dinosaur bones of the Elliott Formation in the Karoo Basin, which represent the second oldest occurrence of insect traces in bone from continental settings. Both trace fossils sites have palaeogeographic implications for the origins and dispersal of osteophagia amongst terrestrial invertebrates during the Mesozoic. These discoveries push back the antiquity of pupation in animal bones by more than 100 million years to the Middle Jurassic, indicating that this behaviour, and osteophagy more generally, originated early in the Mesozoic, roughly comparable with the origination of insect pupation in woody substrates (Late Triassic).  相似文献

New ichnological, sedimentological and palaeobotanical information from a Miocene palaeosol succession from Patagonia bearing abundant fossil brood balls of dung beetles (Coprinisphaera) allow inferring novel aspects of the evolutionary history, biology and feeding habits of Scarabaeinae, along with the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic conditions in which they nested. Coprinisphaera tonnii and Coprinisphaera akatanka, both attributed to necrophagous dung beetles, represent 40.2% of the specimens. Considering their scarce or null record in older Cenozoic units from South America, these high values reveal that the first burst of necrophagous Scarabaeinae took place during the Miocene. Some Coprinisphaera preserve characters that indicate the developmental stage of the ball occupant and the adult emergence success. Both ichnospecies show the egg chamber isolated from the provision chamber, which was associated with a higher preference of cleptoparasites for necrophagous balls. The comparison among the abundance of traces of nest intruders in Coprinisphaera attributed both to necrophagous and to coprophagous beetles from different units of South America indicates that the presence of such intruders would be independent of the nature of the organic matter contained within the balls. Phytolith analyses performed in Coprinisphaera and extant necrophagous and coprophagous balls indicate that the comparison between the relative abundance of phytoliths in the wall of the brood ball, their infilling and the bearing palaeosol is a useful tool for inferring the feeding behaviour of the trace makers and support the attribution of Coprinisphaera tonnii and Coprinisphaera akatanka to necrophagous Scarabaeinae. Sedimentary and palaeosol analyses indicate that the beetles would have nested in well-drained soils showing mollic-like features, in grass-dominated habitats, under a seasonal sub-humid, temperate–warm climate.  相似文献

More than 4000 insect trace fossils collected in recent years from Pliocene deposits at Laetoli in northern Tanzania provide new insights on early hominin palaeoenvironments. These trace fossils include: Fictovichnus gobiensis, Coprinisphaera murguiai, C. kheprii, Coprinisphaera ispp., Quirogaichnus isp., Teisseirei linguatus isp. nov., Celliforma ritchiei isp. nov., C. spirifer, C. germanica, C. cfr. curvata, Celliforma ispp., Rosellichnus isp., Vondrichnus planoglobus, Laetolichnus kwekai igen. et isp. nov. and Krausichnidae indet. They reveal that at least one species of moth, three dung beetles and five other coleopterans, nine taxa of solitary bees, and an indeterminate number of taxa of termites inhabited the Lower Laetolil environments. The Upper Laetolil environments, which have yielded a rich diversity of vertebrate fossils, including the early hominin Australopithecus afarensis and its putative footprints, supported several taxa of termites, one dung beetle, five other coleopterans, and eleven taxa of bees. The Upper Ndolanya environments, which have yielded the hominin Paranthropus aethiopicus, record four taxa of dung beetles, four other coleopterans, and two taxa of bees. The record of larval mortality and lack of intruder activity, revealed by the absence of emergence and intruder traces, may be associated with the anoxic/hypoxic conditions caused by the instantaneous burial of soils under thick volcanic ashes. The record of the Celliforma Ichnofacies in the Upper Laetolil environments indicates the dominance of shrubland to woodland with limited grass cover. This is supported also by the absence of Coprinisphaera, which suggests a scarcity of fresh grasses and a low abundance of large mammal grazers.  相似文献

Lacertoid footprints are the largest component of the Upper Permian Arenaria di Val Gardena Formation ichnofauna that contains hundreds of specimens mostly referred to the ichnogenus Rhynchosauroides Maidwell 1911. In this paper, we analyzed unpublished material and re-examined the Rhynchosauroides footprints of that ichnofauna, in particular the figured specimens. Analysis of Rhynchosauroides and its type ichnospecies R. rectipes Maidwell 1911 was first necessary. This preliminary investigation highlighted several problems, including ichnospecies named on the basis of poorly preserved material and in some cases significantly different from the type ichnospecies.

The study allowed for recognition of three ichnotaxa referred to Rhynchosauroides: Rhynchosauroides pallinii Conti et al., 1977, Rhynchosauroides isp.1 and Rhynchosauroides isp.2 and Ganasauripus ladinus igen. et isp. nov. Other material previously referred to Rhynchosauroides is herein regarded as unclassifiable, in the light of present ichnological knowledge and procedures.  相似文献

The ichnogenus Palmiraichnus was erected by Roselli in 1987 to include his formerly described ich‐nospecies castellanosi, and a new one, minor, herein considered a junior synonym of the former. Shape, lining and closure clearly show that these traces are fossil bee cells. Celliforma, the other ichnogenus for non‐clustered fossil bee cells, includes two ichnospecies, bedfordi (=septata) (n. syn.) and pinturensis, which share with Palmiraichnus castellanosi the presence of antechambers and hardened cell walls. This combination of features is characteristic of certain groups of short‐tongued bees and justifies the inclusion of these ichnospecies in Palmiraichnus. Microscopic structures of cell walls and closures are adopted here for ichnotaxonomic purposes and for comparing fossil with extant cells revealing that they are useful ichnotaxobases with respect to the problematic fossil bee cell ichnotaxonomy. The micro‐structure of the cell walls and closures of the three ichnospecies of Palmiraichnus are compared. The presence of antechambers and particularly of the thickened cell rears suggest a relationship between Palmiraichnus castellanosi and Uruguay, an ichno‐taxon also attributable to bees. However, in Uruguay ichnospecies. cells are grouped in well‐defined clusters, whereas in Palmiraichnus castellanosi, cells occur isolated in paleosols, and no intermediate morphologies are known between the two ichnogenera. P. castellanosi, the focus of our study, is also compared with oxaeid cells revealing similarities in size and wall microstructure and differences in microstructure of closures and cell rears.  相似文献

A unique ichnofossil assemblage from Pennsylvanian-age sandstones near Eaton Rapids, Michigan, USA, comprises straight-to-curved traces preserved in convex hyporelief, with the transverse ridges and median grove associated with the ichnogenus Arthrophycus. The Michigan traces show some branching or pseudo-branching (also known from other Arthrophycus specimens) and are among the smallest structures (millimeters in diameter) attributed to this ichnogenus. The orientation of the Michigan Arthrophycus burrows is distinct from other ichnospecies of this taxon in the pronounced co-planar alignment of the burrows, as opposed to the multiplanar, interweaving, “bundled” nature typical of the ichnogenus. On this basis we assign the Michigan specimens to a new ichnospecies of Arthrophycus. The “paralleling behavior” of the new taxon may reflect a strategy of the tracemaker to avoid previous burrows and reflect differences in resource availability or current energy. This new taxon supports previous records of the occurrence of this ichnogenus in Upper Carboniferous strata.  相似文献

The clastic Horlick Formation contains an ichnofauna of 28 ichnotaxa dominated by burrowers. These are a mixture of simple vertical forms (Skolithos linearis, S. magnus, Bergaueria cf. langi, Rosselia socialis, Monocraterion isp.), U or arc-like forms (Diplocraterion parallelum, Arenicolites types A and B, Catenarichnus antarcticus, C. isp., aff. Lanicoidichna isp.), and complex, vertical spiral structures (Asterosoma isp., Spirophyton isp.). Horizontal burrows include Ancorichnus cf. capronus, Palaeophycus tubularis, and Psammichnites devonicus isp. nov. Surface traces comprise Haplotichnus isp., Cruziana problematica, C. rhenana, Rusophycus aff. carbonarius, R. isp., Protovirgularia rugosa, Lockeia ornata and cubichnia indet., while trackways include Diplichnites gouldi, D. isp., Maculichna? isp. and large imprints. The Horlick Formation (maximum 56 m) records an early Devonian transgression onto a deeply weathered land area that lay in the direction of Marie Byrd Land, spreading from the South Africa sector of Gondwana. Analysis of the trace fossils confirms their formation in near-shore to intertidal environments, with some ichnotaxa living close to the marine/fluvial boundary (e.g., Spirophyton, aff. Lanicoidichna, Cruziana problematica, Rusophycus aff. carbonarius, Maculichna?). The ichnofauna probably comprised a variety of marine suspension and deposit-feeding worms, shallow burrowing molluscs (bivalves and possibly bellerophontids) and several different types of arthropods, including trilobites.  相似文献

The ichnospeciesBolonia lata Meunier, 1886 is a straight, bilobate trace fossil with a somewhat heart-shaped outline in cross-section. It has previously been reported from various localities mainly from the Jurassic by different authors under various names such asGyrochorte, Scolicia, orProtovirgularia. Because none of these previous determinations fully agrees with the trace fossils’ morphology, the ‘forgotten name’ is reintroduced, and due to a lack of type material a neotype from the type area of Boulonnais, France is proposed. The ichnogenus is currently represented only by one ichnospecies,B. lata Meunier, 1886. Diagnostic criteria ofBolonia and morphologically related trace fossils such asScolicia, Gyrochorte, Bichordites, “Taphrhelminthopsis nelsoni”, andProtovirgularia are discussed, the synonymy ofB. lata is provided and finally a discussion on the possible producer ofBolonia is given.   相似文献

The diverse ichnological assemblage from the outcrops near Howick (Northumberland, United Kingdom) is exceptionally well-preserved. Among these Carboniferous ichnotaxa is a new ichnospecies of Dactyloidites. Specimens were collected and processed using high-resolution serial grinding and photography to produce an accurate and precise three-dimensional model of these new burrows in full colour. The model produced in association with petrographic thin sections and field observations is used as the basis for comparison between Dactyloidites jordii nov. isp. and other ichnospecies of Dactyloidites. The current taxonomic status of the ichnogenus is examined and reviewed. D. jordii nov. isp. is a broadly bisymmetrical, stellate to palmate burrow composed of numerous long, narrow rays that exhibit three orders of branching arranged into tiered galleries radiating from a central shaft. The trace maker is suggested to be a vermiform organism with an adaptive burrowing strategy that facilitates alteration of its burrow construction to accommodate suboptimal sediment conditions. The adaptive nature of trace-making organisms and the inherent anisotropy of many burrowed media highlight the need for ichnologists to provide a type series rather than a single holotype, in order to capture the inherent range of common burrow morphologies.  相似文献

We describe an arthropod body impression associated with arthropod trackways of the ichnogenus Stiaria from the Lower Permian (upper Wolfcampian) Robledo Mountains Formation (Hueco Group) in the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument of southern New Mexico. The probable producer of these traces was a scorpion, and we name the likely scorpionid resting trace Alacranichnus braddyi, new ichnogenus and ichnospecies. There are no prior reports of scorpionid body impressions from terrestrial settings in the fossil record.  相似文献

A new ichnospecies of the ichnogenus Funalichnus Pokorný is described from the Middle Bhuban Unit, Bhuban Formation, Surma Group (Lower - Middle Miocene) of Aizawl, Mizoram, India. Funalichnus bhubani isp. Nov. Is a large burrow displaying cylindrical segments that are oriented nearly perpendicular to the bedding plane. The new ichnospecies can be identified on the basis of general form, size, unlined passive filling and twisted rod-like structure. The association of Funalichnus bhubani isp. Nov. With Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, Ophiomorpha Psilonichnus Skolithos and Thalassinoides points to its bathymetric restriction. The deep extension of the burrow in clastic sediments provides a favourable condition for preservation in the shoreface environment and occurrence in fine- to medium-grained clastic sediments may be a preservational preference.  相似文献

A new ichnospecies of Cardioichnus, Cardioichnus biloba isp. nov., is described and documented from shallow marine strata of Cretaceous (Late Albian) age in southern New Mexico, USA. It is a heart-shaped resting trace which, unlike all other ichnospecies of Cardioichnus, is epichnial and increases in width to a bilobate trace, often with a raised anterior terminus. Only the posterior end of this trace is associated with Bichordites burrows, and the anterior end is bilobate and undisturbed. This represents a resting position which differs from other known species of this cubichnium, which are hypichnial and subquadrate in symmetry. The tracemaker is a spatangoid echinoid, most likely Heteraster d'Orbigny, 1853.  相似文献

Abstract

The Yacoraite Formation (Maastrichtian–Danian; Balbuena Subgroup; Salta Group), from Northwestern Argentina, represents a shallow epeiric unit which is the result of transgressions in the Andean basin of South America. Herein, we study the avian footprints from the Maimará locality, Jujuy province, and Quebrada del Tapón ichnosite, Salta province. The avian footprints from the Maimará locality is less diverse, made up: cf. Alaripeda isp., Avipeda isp., cf. Gruipeda filiportatis, and cf. Gruipeda isp. The avian track record from the Quebrada del Tapón ichnosite is composed of: cf. Alaripeda isp., Ardeipeda cf. egretta., Gruipeda filiportatis (=Yacoraitichnus avis) and others Gruipeda or compared to this ichnogenus, cf. Uhangrichnus isp., and several indetermined avian footprints. Both ichnological assemblages have tracks assigned to shorebirds or Charadriiformes. The facies distribution of trace fossils reinforces the overall model of a shorebird tracks dominance in moderate to low energy settings. This distribution can be divided into three sub-environments: (1) a moderate to high energy shoreline under wave action, (2) a supratidal body of ephemeral ponds, far away from direct wave influence and (3) a landward position, beyond the ephemeral ponds system. We have included all the ichnoassemblages within the shorebird ichnosubfacies as a subset of the Scoyenia Ichnofacies.  相似文献
