AbstractA demographic and osteological analysis of skeletons from the Larson Village Site (39WW2), Walworth County, South Dakota, is presented. The site was an Arikara village dating to about A.D. 1750-1785. Within the village, the scattered and commingled bones of 71 individuals were discovered. Sixty-one of the skeletons were on earthlodge floors, an extremely unusual occurrence in the Plains. The objective of this analysis was to determine whether the cause responsible for these unburied remains was Intertribal warfare: the evidence is strong that it was. 相似文献

In 1997, coal extraction at the John Henry Mine in western King County, Washington, USA, exposed bedding planes in Eocene sandstone that contained numerous bird and mammal tracks. By the time scientists arrived at the site several months later, the track-bearing surfaces had mostly been obliterated by landslides. Several track specimens were collected but not curated, described, or studied. In 2011, the specimens were found in a storage room at the University of Washington Burke Museum of History and Culture, triggering an investigation that yielded many photographs of the fossil site taken at the time of the 1997 discovery. Perissodactyl mammal tracks are named herein as Oplidcatylapes eocenica ichnogenus and ichnospecies nov. Photographs also show a trackway containing eight footprints that have prominent claw impressions. These tracks are inferred to have been made by a creodont, but because of the absence of specimens or track casts to serve as holotypes, ichnotaxonomic names have not been assigned. 相似文献

环志是研究迁徙鸟类的重要途径。云南省哀牢山北段大中山是鸟类迁徙的重要通道,但缺乏具体的研究数据。1997年、2010年和2011年秋季夜间迁徙鸟类环志研究的结果表明,哀牢山北段大中山捕获到的夜间鸟类有108种2330只,分属10目24科。其中,以雀形目鸟类为主,占总捕获数量的78.3%,捕获优势种为树鹨(占捕获数量的16.95%)、红喉姬鹟(13.39%)、红尾伯劳(9.83%)、红喉歌鸲(8.71%)和栗鹀(4.80%);水禽占捕获鸟类总种数的16.7%,与云南其他地点的研究结果相似。由于水禽是传播禽流感的主要载体,候鸟聚集地存在传播禽流感的风险,春季也有候鸟翻越哀牢山,因此有必要开展春季鸟类环志工作。 相似文献

Tree rings of eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) were examined from cores extracted from two log cabins located at the Wynnewood State Historic Site in Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee. One cabin was reportedly built by the first explorer in the area, Isaac Bledsoe, sometime between 1772 and his death in 1793. The second cabin was known as Spencer's Cabin after the first settler of the region, Thomas Sharp Spencer, who lived in the immediate vicinity from 1776 to 1779. The goal of this research was to determine the probable construction year(s) for both cabins and determine whether Bledsoe and Spencer did indeed build these structures. Forty-one cores were extracted from Bledsoe's Cabin, and 30 were used for crossdating and building a floating chronology using COFECHA. The Bledsoe's Cabin chronology was then statistically and graphically crossdated using the eastern red cedar reference tree-ring chronology (ITRDB #TN031) from Norris Dam, Tennessee. We found a statistically significant correlation (r = 0.42, t = 4.18, n = 85, p < 0.0001) between the Bledsoe's Cabin chronology and the reference chronology, anchoring the chronology between 1720 and 1804, with nearly all cores indicating tree harvesting between February and April 1805. Twenty-two cores were extracted from Spencer's Cabin, and 17 were used to build a floating chronology for the cabin. Again, we found a statistically significant correlation (r = 0.44, t = 4.85, n = 100, p < 0.00001) with the reference chronology, which anchored the Spencer's Cabin chronology between 1726 and 1825. All trees appear to have been harvested between February and August in 1826. Therefore, neither structure was built by its historical namesake. No known historical documents suggest who the potential builders were, although the property was owned between ca. 1797 and 1829 by General James Winchester. He and his family, however, never resided on the Wynnewood property because Winchester had built a large multi-room structure in nearby Gallatin, Tennessee, by 1802. 相似文献

Palaeontological and palaeoichnological studies were made along the southeastern coast of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Continental Late Pleistocene and continental, transitional and marine Holocene stratigraphic units were identified. The former are represented by fossil mammal bones and ichnites dated from 16,000 to 12,000 y. B.P. Continental Early Holocene beds dated circa 8,100 years B.P. contain fish, rodent and bird remains. Middle Holocene sediments 6,930 to 6,570 years B.P. are recorded by deposits bioturbated by estuarine crabs. During the Late Holocene, between 5,000 and 4,800 B.P., a marine transgression is recorded by a very rich mollusc fauna. The palaeoenvironmental variety recorded along a few tens of kilometers of the coast is a distinctive feature of this part of the Argentine coastal region. At Monte Hermoso beach, in the eastern part of the studied zone, archaeological materials were dated 7,300 years B.P., and human footprints dated 7,125 years B.P. were also recorded. In January 2005 some isolated human footprints were found at Pehuen-Co palaeoichnological site, which are older than those found at Monte Hermoso beach and of the same age as the oldest human archaeological findings in Patagonia, that is about 12,000 yeas B.P. 相似文献

AbstractWhile gathering economic and environmental data from the Mitchell site in 1971, one house and part of anotherwere excavated. The more completely excavated structure had burned, and provided evidence for a number of architectural features. This house was a rectangular structure with walls of wattle and daub construction and a roof composed of poles overlain by willows and grass. Both houses were constructed in pits, cut into a deeply buried, black “fossil” soil which appears to represent the prairie soil at the time the site was initially occupied. The surface of this fossil soil was buriedabout three feet below the modern surface by a mantle of mixed soil and midden debris. Profiles from the burned house indicate that the thick mantle of mixed soil and midden was the result of banking the walls of the house with quantities of soil and habitation debris. 相似文献

2006年4~5月采用"点样带法"(point transects)对四川老君山自然保护区的鸟类物种组成和种群数量进行了调查,共记录到85种鸟类,分属7目22科。其中,国家级保护鸟类5种,我国特有种13种,优势种4种。把调查区域划分为3种生境:原始林、次生林和人工林,并对各生境鸟类群落的鸟类数量级、鸟类群落的物种多样性、鸟类群落间的相似性进行了比较分析,其结果表明:1)国家级保护鸟类在原始林中最多,次生林中最少;我国特有种则是次生林中最多,人工林中最少。2)鸟类群落Shannon-Wiener物种多样性指数原始林最高,人工林最低。3)原始林和次生林之间的B ray-Curtis相似性指数最高,原始林和人工林之间相似性指数最低。 相似文献

AbstractThe Spawn Mound, 39LK201, overlooking Brant Lake in eastern South Dakota, appears to be a Plains Woodland burial mound later used by historic Dakota for secondary interments. The 1966 excavations revealed two burial pits believed to be contemporaneous with the erection of the mound, which were assigned to the Plains Woodland component, and a third pit at the center of the mound which has been assigned to the historic Dakota. Each of the Woodland burial pits contained at least three individuals buried in the flexed position. The intrusive pit contained the remains of at least two individuals, apparently “bundle” burials. These intrusive burials were accompanied by European trade items.On the basis of the limited ceramic material from the mound, including one rim sherd of the Ellis Cord Impressed type, as well as various lithic materials recovered in the mound fill, the Plains Woodland component has been tentatively assigned to the Loseke Focus. A culture-independent molecular phylogenetic analysis was carried out to study the prokaryotic diversity in two soil samples
collected from the subsurface (1.34 km depth) of the former Homestake gold mine, Lead, South Dakota, USA at two sites, the
Ross shaft and number 6 Winze. Microbial community analyses were performed by cloning and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes retrieved
directly from soil samples. Geochemical characterization of soils revealed high amount of toxic metals such as As, Cd, Co,
Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and U at both the sites. Phylogenetic analyses showed that soil samples were predominantly composed of
phylotypes related to phylum Proteobacteria. Other phyla detected in libraries were Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Chlorobi, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, Planctomycetes,
Verrucomicrobia, and candidate divisions OP10 and TM7. The majority (>95%) of the phylotypes retrieved in the libraries were most closely
related to environmental sequences from yet-uncultured bacteria representing a hitherto unidentified diversity. The archaeal
communities at both the sites exhibited lower diversity and were most closely affiliated to uncultivated species within the
Crenarchaeota. Results showed the existence of diverse microbial populations in deep subsurface environment of the Homestake gold mine.
Statistical analyses demonstrated that each site harbored phylogenetically distinct microbial populations that were more diverse

One hundred and twenty-five linguliformean brachiopods of late Marjuman (Cambrian) age with shell perforations, presumably caused by predation, were recovered from shallow-water limestones at two localities of the Deadwood Formation in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. Three-quarters of the perforated valves belonged to taxa in the order Acrotretida, while one-quarter of the specimens belonged to those of the order Lingulida. This is the first report of predation of fossil lingulids. In both orders there was a marked selection for valve type. Ninety-five per cent of all perforations of acrotretids were in the ventral valve, while 87% of all perforations of lingulids were in the dorsal valve. The highest rate of predation of collected acrotretids, at any stratigraphic horizon, was 22%, while the rate of predation of collected lingulids, at any given stratigraphic horizon, was as high as 9%. Half of the perforated valves had round holes with a sharp, non-beveled exterior edge, and half had irregularly shaped holes with chipped interior edges. The former type is attributed to either boring or a swift, piercing percussive strike, while the latter is attributed to a smashing percussive strike with a blunt appendage. A third type of perforation consisting of minute, roughly circular holes is thought to be too small to be the work of predators, and is assumed to be the result of an encrusting organism or parasite. The different types of perforation seen in the brachiopod valves indicate that there was more than one type of predator attacking them, including possibly one of the earliest durophages. Various hypothetical predators are suggested as potential candidates for causing the shell perforations. The criteria for their selection as possible linguliformean predators include possessing the ability to produce one of the two types of shell perforation, and being small enough to warrant preying on small (< 2 mm) brachiopods. 相似文献

The present study investigated the cultivable mesophilic (37°C) and thermophilic (60°C) cellulose-degrading bacterial diversity
in a weathered soil-like sample collected from the deep subsurface (1.5 km depth) of the Homestake gold mine in Lead, South
Dakota, USA. Chemical characterization of the sample by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy revealed a high amount of toxic heavy
metals such as Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Zn. Molecular community structures were determined by phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA
gene sequences retrieved from enrichment cultures growing in presence of microcrystalline cellulose as the sole source of
carbon. All phylotypes retrieved from enrichment cultures were affiliated to Firmicutes. Cellulose-degrading mesophilic and thermophilic pure cultures belonging to the genera Brevibacillus, Paenibacillus, Bacillus, and Geobacillus were isolated from enrichment cultures, and selected cultures were studied for enzyme activities. For a mesophilic isolate
(DUSELG12), the optimum pH and temperature for carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) were 5.5 and 55°C, while for a thermophilic
isolate (DUSELR7) they were 5.0 and 75°C, respectively. Furthermore, DUSELG12 retained about 40% CMCase activity after incubation
at 60°C for 8 h. Most remarkably, thermophilic isolate, DUSELR7 retained 26% CMCase activity at 60°C up to a period of 300 h.
Overall, the present work revealed the presence of different cellulose-degrading bacterial lineages in the unique deep subsurface
environment of the mine. The results also have strong implications for biological conversion of cellulosic agricultural and
forestry wastes to commodity chemicals including sugars. 相似文献

A long continuous trackway of a shorebird (cf. Charadriipeda) and a suite of possible Pantodonta (?Corophydon) or Dinocerata tracks are reported from the Eocene Karaj Formation. Fossil footprints are still rare in Iran, described only from two Jurassic and three Tertiary sites. We provide nanoscale evidence of the role of sheath exopolymers in the silicification of the sheathed cyanobacteria Calothrix. Electron microscope observations of silicified Calothrix cells revealed that silica accretes directly onto EPS sheath fibrils to produce an open web of silica particles that could remain permeable to nutrients and waste products. We also found that silicified Calothrix cells from different microhabitats contained morphologically distinct silica particles. Differences in silicification texture suggest that environmental variables may influence silicification at the nanoscale. We develop a framework based on aggregation kinetics to address silicification processes in Calothrix and other sheathed cyanobacteria. 相似文献
